Yes, trademarks are different, but if the project already has an existing
registered trademark that could be discussed with VP, Brand. It has happened
that trademark assignment has been negotiated to occur once a podling
graduates, but it is not the normal case.

Write tradema...@apache.org if you want to discuss.

Hi Danny, For Trademark, only after graduation as a TLP, the project donation
is then completed and the trademark belongs to ASF, which cannot be withdrawn
or reversed,  right?

Yes. Even I don't want to see leave, no matter retire or original team leave.
But that is an option.
Please don't feel the ASF or Incubator would lock-in. They act as individuals,
they could choose.

As the license can change between versions of a product (see bootstrap for

All 7 items are resolved. The "Three most important issues to address in the
move towards graduation" section had been misread by all of us, as the list had
accumulated over time, and is now only consisting of resolved items. It's been
fixed in the report.

https://incubator.apache.org/projects/skywalking.html was more accurate, in
that it provides dates over resolved items.

Whimsy uses an extra status file that is not well documented in
content/podlings/skywalking.yml which is completely manual and duplicates in an
easier format than content/projects/skywalking.xml

I’ve been looking at this in light of the whole clutch process. See threads on

The PPMC should be able to discuss that and work that out themselves and come
up with the right answer if they are ready for graduation.

I was just looking at this month board report and noticed these in SkyWalking
report:

"Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:
  1. IP clearance.
  3. First ASF release. (SkyWalking 5.0)
  3. Further ASF culture and processes.
 ...
  7. Clear Brand issues with other ecosystem projects.“

If possible can one of the PPMC members / mentors explain what these issue are
in a little more detail. It’s seems a little unusual for these things to be
listed and presumably unresolved if the project is considering graduation,
especially the IP clearance issue. I can see the whimsey page (probably
incorrectly) states that "No Software Grant and No IP Clearance Filed” [1]

Hi

There is another option to try if the email subscription isn't working.
You can access the whimsy portal (login using your ASF username/password)
https://whimsy.apache.org/committers/subscribe and from here you can
subscribe yourself to the private list if you're on the PPMC.

At least in theory this should work. Feel free to reply if it doesn't.

 Kai Wang,

Please remember to to setup your email name/account so the sender is " Kai
Wang" for all emails to apache ML.

For those of us that can't read chinese it is too difficult to identify your
real name. Adding your english alias after your chinese name honours your
original name and identity (and culture) while also giving the rest of us the
required handle to remember you by.

And if you can remember to keep reminding folk of this as they join the
project, it would be most appreciated and kind.

regards,
Mick

王凯 Kai Wang,

Please remember to to setup your email name/account so the sender is "王凯 Kai
Wang" for all emails to apache ML.

For those of us that can't read chinese it is too difficult to identify your
real name. Adding your english alias after your chinese name honours your
original name and identity (and culture) while also giving the rest of us the
required handle to remember you by.

And if you can remember to keep reminding folk of this as they join the
project, it would be most appreciated and kind.

regards,
Mick

The planned graduation resolution is in this DISCUSS thread above, specifically
here:
https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/bf9512ac5441f602c41fe8fe7e11d9fa6121f04fc8d3f0cd39249b13@%3Cgeneral.incubator.apache.org%3E

That includes the updates addressing feedback from both Justin and Sebb.
Removing those two initial PPMC that have since been quiet has not been done,
I'm waiting on confirmation on whether that is needed/requested.

If this is a criteria then there are two trusted committers from the initial
podling creation that have since then not been active. They should be then
removed. They are Sheng Wang and Yuntao Li.
Those that were added in the last round will not have been involved in any
private threads, and only the vote threads are on private. Every other podling
related discussion has happen on the dev ML.

It is not. Those that have been added recently have had no need to be involved
in any private ML discussions, as there has't been any since. It becomes a bit
absurd if those PPMC last added can never be included in any podling graduation
proposal.

They are from different companies:
 - Cloud Wise
 - terminus.io
 - tetrate.io
 - Daocloud
 - Ke Finance
 - Huawei
 - Tingyun
 - Cianiao
 - Yonghui super market
 - VBill Payment Co.

And I don't see more than two PPMC from the same company.

Hi Eric,
I'm a long time user of NetBeans, my involvement the past decade has been
minimal, but I am very excited about seeing Apache NetBeans.

I was keen to try out the little tool that the Zipkin podling community wrote
to help verify the basics on staged releases:
https://github.com/openzipkin-contrib/apache-release-verification

Unfortunately the tool isn't 100% for use on different projects due to little
things like folder layouts and naming.

But in the process a few things were unclear to me are:
 - what's the git sha to this release?
 - what's the gpg key used to sign?

I had to go hunt and figure them out.
I have no idea if the Incubator wishes/enforces that this information is
provided in the vote email?

Mick

Clutch must be run. A lot depends on it. Particularly reporting, but also
podling status and history.

It might be more useful looking at which columns of data are still useful on
the clutch page and also follow up by converting clutch and project main pages
to the new jBake format.

Here is what is on incubator.apache.org/clutch:

We can drop the Sponsor column - it is always Incubator.

A: startDate
B: elapsedDays - <3 <12 <18 <24 >24 months
Should we adjust the color thresholds? <4 <12 <24 <36 >36 months I
think are more reflective of concerns.

C: reportingMonthly (current report: February2019 )
D: reportingGroup - in which set of months do they report:
group-1=Jan,Apr,Jul,Oct group-2=Feb,May,Aug,Nov group-3=Mar,Jun,Sep,Dec
E: hasReportingGroup - did podling remember to choose a group
Combine C, D, and E into one column?

F: hasStatusEntry in the main "Currently in incubation" table (i.e.
i.a.o/projects generated from content/podlings.xml)
G: statusUpdateDate - the status page was last updated
H: statusAge - days since the SVN status page was last updated - <2 <4 <9 >9
months
I: statusUpdateCounts - number of commits to status file in the previous 2,4,9
months (cumulative)
What we do with these depends on how we address the future of the
status xml and yml.

J: numberCommitters - accounts have been established, total number to date
K: numberCommittersNew - new committers added since establishment (gathered
from each project's Status page "News" section)
J is always a '-' and it looks like few podlings update News in status.
Idea - Update to be J: initial size of committers list and K: (current
size - initial size.)

L: hasSvn - Subversion repository is created
Only two podlings have svn - we need to update to reflect the status of
gitbox OR svn.

M: hasTracker - has an Issue Tracker
N: hasMailListDev - has dev mail list and archives
O: hasMailListCommits - has commits mail list and archives
P: hasWebSite
These are important.

Q: hasDistributionArea - has w.a.o/dist/incubator/... area (not necessarily yet
a release)
R: hasKeys - has a PGP "KEYS" file in their distribution area
S: hasRelease - has a release in their distribution area
These are important too.

OK. Let’s look into Obiwarn and deal with Apple autocorrecting it to Obiwan …

PODLINGNAMESEARCH-165
Establish whether
"Apache Obiwarn" is a Suitable Name

Isn’t the name supposed to be Obiwan and not Obiwarn?

Please look into it. Sorry, color me confused.

The public part of PNS tickets should be factual, so I'd say:
 .
"In the _Star Wars_ universe there exists a character named Obi-Wan Kenobi"
 .
with a link to Wikipedia for good measure.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Pinot (incubating) 0.1.0 RC0

2019-03-04 Thread Seunghyun Lee
@Mohammad

I really appreciate for the vote :) I have some questions in regarding to
your suggestions.

1. We thought of removing binary LICENSE/NOTICE from the source release.
However, there's one side effect that people cannot build a completely
valid binary tarball out of the released source code (because it's missing
binary LICENSE/NOTICE files). Spark and Flink project seemed to have the
similar issue and they went with different approach. Spark removed binary
LICENSE/NOTICE while Flink project includes the binary LICENSE/NOTICE files
for the source code release. We preferred the latter approach (if it's not
violating Apache terms) because it allows users to build the valid binary
release tarball out of the released source code. (reference - spark issue:
https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/22840)

How do you think on this? I discussed with one of our mentors and he was
fine with including binary LICENSE/NOTICE file to a source code release.

2. Can you provide me some example projects that are including
version/commitid/tag for each listed dependencies as a reference? Also, are
you referring to a binary LICENSE file or a source code LICENSE file? If
for binary, I can get the versions for each dependency easily but tracking
commitId + tag for each dependency(100+) will not be a simple task and I'm
not sure if those information is required. Can you comment on this a bit
more in detail? We can definitely address the issue for the next release.

3. I guess that the archives that you mention are probably sample data that
are used for unit/integration tests. If we removed those archives, tests
will probably fail. If possible, can you list some of archives that you
have the concern with? We will evaluate if those archives are necessary to
be include in the source release.

Thank you!

Best,
Seunghyun

Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache SkyWalking (incubating) as a TLP(take2)

2019-03-04 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

It is down to four people missing from the PPMC list. I don’t view this as a
problem. Clearly there are small operational issues. (Mick - SHOULD is used as
specifications and really means MUST. They really MUST because if not that
means that these PMC members can’t see discussion and votes on new committers
and PMC members. They also miss any important security and branding issues that
need PMC action. It’s important, but I think that there are enough PPMC members
available that lack of response is not a concern.

As I understand things from a conversation I had in Shenzhen is that SkyWalking
was always multiple developers not associated with any particular vendors.

May I see a link to the planned Graduation Resolution?

Dave

DISCLAIMER:
Apache MXNet (incubating) is an effort undergoing incubation at The
Apache Software Foundation (ASF), sponsored by the name of Apache
Incubator PMC. Incubation is required of all newly accepted
projects until a further review indicates that the
infrastructure, communications, and decision-making process have
stabilized in a manner consistent with other successful ASF
projects. While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection
of the completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate
that the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.

Hi,

> I think the question is not "Is SkyWalking ready to graduate" but "Is the
> proposed PMC list accurate”.

Well the graduation was put off last time because the project was not correctly
recognising merit, and they have fixed that by voting more folks but but if
they are not active then I’m not sure what has been fixed. It seems this could
be a symptom of the same problem? But I did also say "Perhaps the roster needs
to be adjusted in the proposal for it to be accepted by the IPMC?”

Out of interest do we know who those 4 or 5 people work for (or the rest of the
proposed PMC members)? It’s good to have a PMC consisting of people from
different companies.

Justin

I think the question is not "Is SkyWalking ready to graduate" but "Is the
proposed PMC list accurate".

The PMC members are responsible for governing the TLP and as such need to be
familiar with what is expected of them. Governance activities are conducted on
the PPMC private list. If a PPMC member has not participated in any governance
activities during incubation, it's unclear that they belong on the PMC.

Reviewing the last several months of private@skywalking list, most of the
discussion of new committers has had only four or five participants, who are
clearly involved in governance of the project.

Let’s more fully investigate the clutch process … I think clutch.py is using a
database created by clutch...

AFAIK there is some code in Whimsy to make sure that status in
content/projects/*.xml is kept in sync.

The files under content/projects in xml are the complete detailed status of
every podling that is or has been through the Incubator. Eliminating these
files is therefore problematic. There is useful information in there that goes
away with a TLP LDAP or when LDAP goes away with retirement. Also these xml
files do define the podling status page.

Whimsy also uses yml files under content/podlings/ to document some of the same
information that is in the xml. I think that this better conforms with our
current workflows. I think that the data here should be made to override and
replace the xml files somehow.

The migration of the Incubator website to jBake and Git is definitely
incomplete.

Important pages still under the old style.

https://incubator.apache.org/projects/
https://incubator.apache.org/clutch/
https://incubator.apache.org/ip-clearance/

Missing pages “lost in migration":

https://incubator.apache.org/facilities.html

https://incubator.apache.org/history

I’ve evaluated ^/incubator/public/trunk/content
Moving onto ^/incubator/public/trunk and clutch

your from-address.

Send mail directly to private-subscribe-1151262684=qq@skywalking.apache.org
from any address.

This works for any mail subscription.

I just noticed that the reason the private-list request example you
sent me failed is that you sent it from your foxmail account.
However the foxmail account is not a moderator.

Moderation confirmation replies include a cookie and will work from
any email, but
requests that you initiate have to come from the moderation address,
which in your case is your apache account.

[website] Do we still need the Clutch report?

2019-03-04 Thread Bertrand Delacretaz
Hi,

I was looking at streamlining the incubator.a.o website generation,
currently the build script at [1] calls "python3 clutch.py" to build
the http://incubator.apache.org/clutch/ page.

Is that information still useful considering how our workflows have
evolved over time?

Whimsy provides lots of useful information under
https://whimsy.apache.org/roster/ppmc/ which is generated
automatically from LDAP AFAIK, so more reliable (hopefully not derived
from clutch data, we should verify that) and maybe sufficient.

I also think we should eliminate the XML files under
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/public/trunk/content/projects/
if the relevant data is in LDAP, to eliminate data duplication, or at
least drastically simplify them, but that's another story.

How about moving them under an OBSOLETE folder instead?

That would make things clearer - just make sure the website build at
https://builds.apache.org/view/H-L/view/Incubator/job/Incubator%20Site/
still works after that.

No, it's fine to have a slightly different description in the
graduation resolution.

It's best for the resolution's description to be reasonably broad -
projects evolve, and if that description is too specific it might
become "wrong" over time.

With this in mind I like sebb's proposal:

That is really hard to know.

Dongxue and Kai

Could you try to type the private-subscr...@skywalking.apache.org manually, and
try again? Tomorrow.
Also,
You could try John's option, https://whimsy.apache.org/committers/subscribe .
Just not work to me.

Your emailer is adding some extra text to the To: address which I
think is confusing ezmlm.

Yes, there should be a confirmation mail.
I have so far only seen mod requests for Allen.Wang

Maybe their mailers are also adding spurious characters to the To: address.

2019-03-04 Thread ???? Sheng Wu
Hi John

I just try on that page, don't find skywalking-private in `Subscribe` or
`UnSubscribe` lists.
I am already PPMC, no skywalking, zipkin, shardingsphere private, which I am
already there.
But I could find incubator-private, since I am IPMC.

Do I miss anything?

Re: 答复: Problems subscribing to SkyWalking (Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache SkyWalking (incubating) as a TLP(take2))

2019-03-04 Thread John D. Ament

Your mail program seems to be adding some text to the reply address, e.g.

To: "=?gb18030?B?...etc..?="

(You can see that in the second email you forwarded to me)

I think that is what is causing ezmlm to reject your emails.

Please ensure you copy the reply address exactly as provided in the
email from ezmlm.
Or, in the above case, don't add extra characters to the address; it should be:

To: private-l...@skywalking.apache.org

Hi Sebb

I just send mail in dev@skywalking, just realize you may be not there. This is
my reply.

> I just replied, and it worked fine; they are shown as being on the list.

Have no clue why :(. Tried multiple times, always fail. But for some, success.

> Can you forward some example failure mails directly to me please?

Sent two examples to your personal mail.

> Who gets nothing?

They, Dongxue(1151262...@qq.com) and Kai(oracle...@gmail.com), sent mail to
private-subscr...@skywalking.apache.org.
But nothing comes back to him, I remember, there should be a confirm mail to
subscriber, right?
or moderators like me. I assume you don't get them too.

Not getting any response at all is not an indication of whether the list exist
of not, unfortunately.

Anyway… to the thread's discussion: every PPMC received an invitation (per
Apache template) that requested subscription to both dev and private ML.
Reading the ASF guidelines here:
https://apache.org/foundation/governance/pmcs.html#communication ; I interpret
it as they SHOULD be subscribed rather than MUST, and I'm curious as to whether
how many of the TLPs are actually enforcing this among their pmc, if any. It's
an interesting discussion… but I'm not entirely convinced it's an accurate
shortcoming to whether the podling is ready for graduation or not.

Mick

People may wish to subscribe using a different email from the one to
which their ASF email is forwarded.

Subscription by the PPMC member achieves both the above:
- choice of email address
- validation that the address can get emails

It also means that the person is aware that the private@ list is
something they need to follow.

Digging into this more…

It looks there's also been troubles subscribing from China, or more accurate
receiving the confirm subscription emails from apache to chinese inboxes. (And
it wouldn't surprise me if after creating a new mail accounts and getting
things to work, folk would be forgetting then about private@skywalking )

There's some oddity like Yao Wang who is subscribed to dev ML but is not
getting the confirm email using the same email address for the private ML.

For example:
```
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at apache.org.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.
:
ezmlm-manage: fatal: Illegal or outdated moderator request (#5.7.1)
```

Indeed if I look through my inbox I see some of those missing from the private
ML having matching "CONFIRM subscribe to priv...@skywalking.apache.org" emails.
But they say they did not get those emails.

Folk are also just using the list.apache.org website, which is of no surprise
considering the above errors. We'll continue with this, as the Chinese
communities will need to have this sorted out, but we do believe that all have
attempted to subscribe.

Is there a reason that people with @apache.org addresses have to manually
subscribe to these lists, if it's so mandatory?
I would have thought this is something that should just then be automatic, and
then in this situation it's just the problem of ensuring the @apache.org
address is successfully forwarding emails.

Mick

Whimsy currently shows 6 PPMC members who are not subscribed.
It was 8 when I checked earlier, but two subscriptions were added earlier today.

There are no unrecognised emails on the private@ list; all are
subscribed either with their ASF email or an email that is listed in
their LDAP record. So the list of PPMC members without subscriptions
is accurate in Whimsy.

Yesterday, 8 of the 13 PPMC members were not subscribed to the private
list. (The 4 mentors are subbed)

I checked their names and email address list in the proposal as well not just
apache emails. Whimsey doesn’t report any other unknown addresses subscribed to
that list so I really cannot see how that is possible.

Yeeaah, something that's not catching me off-guard :-)

I noticed this before we started this thread. We went through the roster and
most of those "missing" are subscribed with other (non-apache) addresses. Most
of them are there and have been involved, also discussion on the private ML is
frowned upon except for votes on new committers/ppmc or security issues, so
more activity is present on dev and notifications. There are two that have been
quiet/inactive, but they remain trusted, so I would hesitate to remove them (as

2019-03-04 Thread Myrle Krantz
When I was writing the graduation proposal for Fineract I explicitly asked
each PMC member for permission to put them on the list. One guy never
answered, so I removed him from the list. There's nothing really *wrong*
with having inactive PMC members, but you can at least start your project's
TLP "life" with the ones who are active enough to respond and subscribe.

YMMV, but for the graduation vote, I'd like to at least know which ones are
subscribed for the purposes of getting a slightly more accurate picture of
the project's true corporate diversity.

Best,
Myrle
