Hi,

-1 (binding) to graduation, the PMC needs to understand the importance of and
follow our randing policy; something seems to have been missed here.

As part of the website, it needs to follow the ASF branding guidelines; there
are no expectations.

Please see https://incubator.apache.org/guides/distribution.html. It should not
be common practice.

The PMC needs to manage its brand and ASF’s trademarks, registered or
otherwise; it seems they have not been doing so.

2023-12-26 Thread Sheng Wu
About the https://opendal.apache.org/docs/python/opendal.html, it is
already on the apache.org site. It is obvious that it belongs to the
ASF.

About other distribution platforms, using short names, rather than
apache or asf prefixes is a common practice. Keeping the readme clear
and stating it is an Apache project, is a good practice. And AFAIK,
pypi, crates, docs should be updated accordingly and have to rely on
the next release.

For other projects, which are not controlled by the committers, it
takes time to add Apache. None of the found ones seem to hurt ASF
branding.

Re: [LICENSE QUESTION] Use jmh as a benchmark tool

Hi,

As listed in that document, a GPL license with a classpath exception is
category X, so everything that applies to other category X licenses applies to
that license. System dependencies that users or developers typically have
installed that don't impact the license of the compiled package are generally
OK, so most versions of Java are OK.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Celeborn(Incubating) 0.3.2-incubating-rc1

2023-12-26 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

Sorry, but it is -1 (binding) for now. Clearing up some of the issues below may
mean that I change my vote.

I checked
- incubating in artifact name
- signatures and hashes are correct
- LICENSE mentions 1 3rd party file from Guava; however, the NOTICE lists both
Apache Spark and Apache Flink, so I think other files may have been copied into
the code base, and LICENSE is missing information or the NOTICE is incorrect.
- There is some overlap with some files with [1]; this is concerning as these
files are under a GPL license. Would you happen to know who has copied from
whom here? If ASF files have been re-licensed under the GPL license, what is
the PMC doing about this? What is the relationship, if any, between this
company and the PMC?
- This file [2] seems to have been copied from Kyuubi?
- No unexpected binary files
- All files have correct source headers
- I didn't compile from the source

Kind Regards,
Justin

Justin>GPL files with classpath exceptions are not allowed [1]

Justin, could you please elaborate?
The link in [1] you mention reads "Special exceptions to the GNU GPL (e.g.
GNU Classpath)"

If "GPL with classpath exception" is not allowed, then **all** ASF
Java-based projects violate the policy as all the projects use
java.lang.String
which is licensed under GPL+Classpath exception.
I'm puzzled how one could release Java-based project without depending on
java.lang.something.

Hi,

+1 (binding)

I checked all source releases.

- incubating in names
- all release include LICENSE, NOTICE and DISCLAIMER
- The NOTICE file for huge graph-computer could be improved, as it contains
unnecessary information. "Copyright 2012 and onwards JanusGraph Authors” is
clearly not correct.
- The NOTICE file for the main source release duplicate information, i.e. "This
product includes software developed at The Apache Software Foundation
(http://www.apache.org/).” and also includes text that is not required.
- No unexpected binary files
- All files have correct headers, except this file might have an incorrect
header. [1]
- was unable to compile but probably my setup

Thanks for your feedback!

I interpret the response as we don't distribute JMH files in source or
binary form, and it's optionally included in test scope. So we can
depend on its classes like we depend on "java.lang.String".

Again, no GPL files are distributed with Fury in source or binary form.

Best,
tison.

OK, that's really interesting. I hope you will add "Gluten-Trino

Is it technically/architecturally feasible to develop a "Gluten-Hive"

Re: [LICENSE QUESTION] Use jmh as a benchmark tool

2023-12-26 Thread Vladimir Sitnikov
Most JMH source files (e.g. see [1]) have the same license as
java.lang.String.
Do you exclude files that use `java.lang.String` from the release? I doubt
so.
The same goes for the benchmarks.

>Or, we can exclude the benchmark code from the release like [4] but
>still hold it in the VCS.

There's no point in excluding benchmarks from the release.
There might be value in publishing the benchmark jars along with the release

However, it is illegal to use jmh files (or any other files) that are
licensed under "GPL without classpath exception".
In other words: if the file has classpath exception, you can use it (e.g.
depend on it, extend class, implement interface), if the classpath
exception is not there you can't.

This is definitely an interesting project and I noticed this project from
a very early stage.
I saw many discussions above on if Gluten should be a subproject of Spark
or not, and I can see the value to keep it independent just like Shaofeng's
previous points. However, the project name or slogan - "Gluten: Plugin to
Double SparkSQL's Performance" could be updated a bit later to get rid of
the confusion to serve SparkSQL only.
+1 on the project going to apache. I am interested in helping as mentor if
needed.

2023-12-26 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

+1 (binding)

In the source release, I checked:
- incubating in artifacts name
- signatures and hashes are correct
- LICENSE and NOTICE are fine
- DISCLAIMER exists
- all files have ASF headers
- no unexpected binary files
- my system isn't setup to compile it

In the REDME.md it suggests that people run the latest non-released version;
please don't do this. [1]

Kind Regards,
Justin

2023-12-26 Thread Sheng Wu
I think once it stays in the test scope, it should be good.
The release policy is about compiling sources to get the binary, which
means the final version could work without GPLx is the most important
part.

[LICENSE QUESTION] Use jmh as a benchmark tool

2023-12-26 Thread tison
Hi,

The new podling Fury depends on jmh[1] which is licensed under GPLv2
with "CLASSPATH" EXCEPTION.

IIRC Flink ever factored out its benchmark code into a separate repo
[2] to comply with ASF's license policy [3].

But since Fury doesn't modify jmh's code, just refers to some
"org.openjdk.jmh." classes, I wonder if it's the same that a Java
source file refers to JDK's classes under GPLv2 with "CLASSPATH"
EXCEPTION.

Or, we can exclude the benchmark code from the release like [4] but
still hold it in the VCS.

Best,
tison.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache HugeGraph (Incubating) 1.2.0 rc1

2023-12-26 Thread Willem Jiang
Hi Yu,

"Do release files have the word incubating in their name?" is for the
release kits, not the maven artifacts. I think we can polish the
checklist for it.
The examples that you showed are all the maven artifacts version,
which is not required for the incubator release kit check.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your comment. The Trino plugin is under PoC, not ready for
