Petri is intended to help existing open source project communities decide
within their community if the Apache Way and the ASF is right for their
community. The community can choose to do this publicly or privately. There are
three possible results: become a TLP, incubate, or something else. It is not
designed to replace the Incubator.

We are all volunteers and need to make our own choices.

I think that all of us bring some biases from our experience. Perhaps the
Incubator should discuss the proposal process and score which aspects of the
Apache Way are in good shape vs which are more of a concern.

Some areas;
- Few active developers.
- Single company development.
- Licensing issues in the code base
- Licensing issues with dependencies

All recent podlings have been asked to make sure that their name is suitable
before joining incubation. If we don’t do this Infra may insist that a posting
name search be done before enter incubation, given that can sometime takes
months, I don’t think that’s a workable solution. This has been discussed

FTR, I agree, which is obvious since I am someone who frequently points out the
concern w/ many podlings graduating w/o a clear (IMHO) understanding of the
Apache Way. And I know that the general concern was one reason and rationale
for the Petri proposal as well. Also, FTR, I lately have not been encouraging
potential projects to join the ASF, but this one seems well suited, and is one
reason why I agreed to Champion it.

I just wanted to ensure that this particular podling proposal was not being

I think it's fine for the incoming podling to use a

It is a general concern of mine and I think that the IPMC should discuss these

Regarding “overdue” I was being asked off line and I suggested that person to

Certainly this is a concern of all incoming podlings though, isn't it? Isn't
the goal of Incubator to ensure, as much as possible, that the podling DOES
develop into a community? So why the overdue concern, if overdue is correct,

Both Kevin and Von are members. How much more experience would you like? Should
I ask for additional Mentor volunteers? This sometimes happens organically when
a VOTE is run, but, as Champion, I can make a specific request. What

Hi Jim,

I am not sure about this project and have concerns:

(1) If you look at https://bitnine.net/agensgraph/ you will note that
AgensGraph is a product name.

(2) The community is being called AgensGraph Extension and it is very likely
that the VP, Brand will not approve.

I’m concerned about whether or not this will develop into a community or will
remain essentially a BitNine community.

I’m also concerned about the experience level of the mentors and we have not

My pleasure, I am glad it is clear now :) So the difference between AgensGraph
and AgensGraph Extension when it comes to user experience is that In AgensGraph
user needs to migrate their existing data, if any, and follow some steps in
this regard whereas in Agensgraph Extension all these steps such as migration
are eliminated. In AgensGraph Extension user can use existing data without
migration to enable graph database.

Since AgensGraph is not involved in this podling it is very likely that Apache
AgensGraph Extension would not be approved as a project name.

While it is not a requirement to change the name before Incubation it is highly
recommended that this group find a name that will be approved.

Thank you, the difference is clear to me now. I imagine the incubator will
sort out if the naming is a problem from trademark perspectives.

Again, for my own edification, could you perhaps explain a bit further what
the difference users experience between AgensGraph and AgensGraph
Extensions? Is there some advantage to AgensGraph being an extension to
postgres rather than being embedded as part of the postgres code itself? If
these kinds of questions are answered elsewhere, I'm happy to take a link
and go back to being quiet until the next graph product comes through
Incubator :)

AgensGraph Extension has "Extension" in its name because it is being developed
as an extension of PostgreSQL. AgensGraph is a fork of PostgreSQL.

Feel the same thing.

I see the contributors of these two projects are almost the same so I
assume that the old AgensGraph is also maintained by the same community and
will abandoned?

And an interesting observation is that, the AgensGraph project changed the
license to AGPL in the past and then after several month changed back to AL
2.0.

https://github.com/bitnine-oss/agensgraph/commit/d27242e3e0c8ef6a94e6785d27e25224836a2c53
https://github.com/bitnine-oss/agensgraph/commit/4229bf7a7449029c33f194c45ab2afe3ca0b08dc

Mind explaining a bit about the movement? And will this introduce any legal
problems?

Thanks.

Re: [DISCUSS] Project proposal - Apache AgensGraph

2020-04-08 Thread Stephen Mallette
Just a general question from someone who tries to follow what happens in
the graph community in general - what is the relationship between
"AgensGraph" and "AgensGraph Extensions"?

https://github.com/bitnine-oss/agensgraph
https://github.com/bitnine-oss/agensgraph-ext

I see that the README for AgensGraph Extensions says:

> AgensGraph Extension, which is a successor of AgensGraph, is developed as
an extension of PostgreSQL.

and I see where the proposal states:

> Prior to AgensGraph extension, there was an existing forked project which
is publicly available as an open-source on the following link:
https://github.com/bitnine-oss/agensgraph

> While working on the fork version of this project, we found out that
there are increasing voices asking for an extension of AgensGraph. It was
then when we decided to develop and work on the extension version to
provide more benefits to PostgreSQL users such as easy installation and
compatibility.

so does all of this just mean that AgensGraph is no longer under
development and all new development is for AgensGraph Extensions? Or am I
missing the difference between these two projects somehow and how they
relate to each other?

[DISCUSS] Project proposal - Apache AgensGraph

2020-04-08 Thread Jim Jagielski
We would like to propose AgensGraph as an Apache incubator project.

The AgensGraph Extension provides an extension for PostgreSQL to give the users
the ability to leverage graph database on top of the existing relational
database with minimal effort. The basic principle of the project is to create
single storage that can handle both relational and graph model data so that the
users can use the standard ANSI SQL along with openCypher
(http://www.opencypher.org), the Graph query language.

The proposal can be found here:

o https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INCUBATOR/AgensGraphExtension

We would appreciate your feedback and thoughts on the proposal.

Cheers!
Jim
