2003-08-05 Thread jaap
Hi,I'm trying to get my gentoobox(freshly installed from a stage3 terball)
ready for internet, but still there are isdn-problems.

At startup,and with /etc/init.d/net.ippp0 start,Iget this :

localhost root # /etc/init.d/net.ippp0 start
*Starting ipppd for ippp0...
In file /etc/ppp/options.ippp0: unrecognized command /dev/ippp0
*Failed to start ipppd

What's going on? ipppd want a command from a configuration file? Are there
exemples of working configurations for gentoo?Anyone can help me?

Thanks

I believe that. But may I ask, why you changed from a stable KDE-Version
to the CVS one? I think, it's normal, that versions coming from the CVS
do not always work as they are supposed to do. Since a few days KDE 3.1.3
is in portage (at least ~x86), I use this since then and had yet no
  problems (even with arts).

Because I like to do some small patches, and I can't do it on an outdated
 version.

I just want to add a quick note here. I have actually found stable to be less
stable for me than CVS. Of course I also do daily updates on KDE-CVS and
have only have problems a few times (recompiling in an hour or so usually
fixed that.) I personally like seeing what is new and up and coming and
getting a few surprises than waiting for 6 months for the next version to
come out (if I wanted that then I wouldn't be using Gentoo which gives me
these opportunities to play.)

Well, things in CVS change, perhaps some critical code changed from your
slackware CVS snippet to the one you are using with Gentoo (just a
  guess).

Probably. I'll try to downgrade Arts. Thanks anyway.

Question here... are you using the wonderful ebuilds from Dan Armak ( http://
dev.gentoo.org/~danarmak/kde-cvs.html )? If not I would suggest trying them.
If you are you might want to look at the following use flag:

artswrappersuid

It is a local USE flag for Arts CVS that will set the suid on the artswrapper.
This should help. If that isn't set then there will be a lag generally (even
though this was supposedly fixed without that I can't get good sound.)

Another place to look into would be your kernel. I'm not sure which kernel
you are using, but some are definitely better than others in terms of sound
and also desktop usage. I'm currently using the CK-Sources ( http://bugs.
gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22822 ) as they are the best functioning sources I
have found (without doing it all from a vanilla kernel.)

Just a few suggestions that may help. One last one... ccache... this should
almost be a requirement with CVS ebuilds. Works wonderfully to lower the
amount of time required to recompile the sources.

Hope that helps a little and good luck :)

I've also been considering the following approach...

Make glisrc which reads the config file and installs gentoo.
   No UI.
Then, let other people make the GUIs to generate the config file

because it would allow me to have a firewall install script, a
webserver, script, etc. When I go to install a machine, I just pull
the correct script and come back the next morning.

 fully ACK

 That would be great!

So we would have two options:

 a) Start the install script in _batch_ mode: passing to it the name
of an 'answer file' containing the answers to the questions that
that would be replied to by the user when /not/ in batch but
in dialog mode.

 or

 b) Start the install script in _dialog_ mode: using either the
(n)curses or the gtk or the Qt interface.

IMhO this would be absolutely great! :-)

Scratch everything I said, this sounds perfect.

For KDE there exists a complementary tool kdialog, perhaps this could
be converted into a Qt-only version - so you could use it in the same

[gentoo-user] AAH! No gnucash in german whatever I try... and ..de translation help?

2003-08-05 Thread Henri Schomäcker
Hi folks,

Whatever I tried, I don't get gnucash running with german language.
first I just emerged gnucash just right away.

My locale settings are:
# echo $LANG
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
# echo $LANGUAGE
49
# echo $LC_ALL
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The german .mo file is in /usr/share/locale/

I started it aaand... english.

O.K. I took a look at the ebuild and then also includet
nls hbci and ofx to my make-tags.

Now I should have all requirements to get my gnucash in german, or not?
Ah, again: emerge gnucash ...
Gnucash emerges and also the hbci proggies and libs.
O.K. much better, but does it start in german language? - NO!

Some searching with google.. I found another environment var which I also
tried, but It didn't help also, so I removed it again.

I can't imagine that the guys who wrote this software made localisation
dependent of one _undocumented_ env. var.

I dont know enought about gettext but coud it be that the german gettext .mo
file can't be found? And if yes, how can I solve the problem?

Please help me... I'm stuck...

I woud be very thankful for any answer to any question...

...many thanks in advance,
yours Henri

In this case perhaps using the good old dialog tool might be an
alternative to writing a complete curses UI?

For KDE there exists a complementary tool kdialog, perhaps this could
be converted into a Qt-only version - so you could use it in the same
way as the dialog tool. Then only a gtk-based version would be needed
to make everybody happy. (but I wouldn't be surprised if being told that
a gdialog already exists)

The current GUI is using dialog, but it is very limited. I really want to
see a CUSTOM GUI. While I realize that dialog, gdialog, xdialog, kdialog,
zenity, whiptail, etc, are very quick to program, I really want to get
away from a debian style install. I think that Gentoo's installer should
stick out among installers. Think of it this way, the installer is the
first impression of our distrobution to a new user. We want to make
something that is HOT, not something that is boring. Those are just my
thoughts, what are yours?

RE: [gentoo-user] Wireless Network question

2003-08-05 Thread Travis Roy
Well, it's really just like a wired network. You need a network card for
each computer (I would suggest Linksys, they're cheap in price, but the
quality is good). And then you would need something to connect them all, or
a Wireless Access Point. Think if it as a broadband router. and that's about
it.

 Hello,

I'm looking to set up a wireless network and have a few questions.
For reference, here are the computers i'd like to have on the network:

Computer 1: Laptop (HP Pavilion 5185)
 runs Gentoo Linux

 Computer 2: Homemade system
 runs Gentoo Linux

 Computer 3: Gaming box
 runs winbloze XP

I will need to purchase wireless cards for all of these sytems. The
winbloze box is not a problem, but i'm not really sure about the other 2
boxes. Could anyone recommend any cards that you've found useful or
aren't too hard to set up? I've been looking at info on wireless stuff
in Linux and i'm kinda confused on the whole thing, so this is going to
be a big learning experience for me :) Thanks for your help!

  - Joe :)

Hi all,

I have run into a problem emerging the Athena widgest package (Xaw3d)

I get the following error message just after Xaw3d source is unpacked.

The error seems to refer to some xprint files. Which funnily enough I had
just emerged yesterday. Has anyone else encountered this problem.

Thx

I had uncountable problems getting ALSA to work with my Audigy (1), so

play music and only like sound for watching trailers and listing to

Maybe you could try this to:

 a) pass the time

Did you check ALSA's site to see if your card is infact supported?

[gentoo-user] 2.6.0_beta2 fine except laptop touchpad

2003-08-05 Thread Dhruba Bandopadhyay
Hello,

Having stayed on 2.4.x for all this time I decided to plunge into
2.6.0_beta2 hoping that by now things may have stabilised a little.

I encountered some problems that were resolved either by including more
options in kernel or by re-emerging baselayout and module-init-tools.

However, there's one problem that just refuses to go away. When I start
xdm my laptop touchpad just won't work. I have not modified my
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 at all but am pretty sure all kernel options are
included and more.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated so that I can be on my way
using the new kernel.

Many thanks.
Dhruba Bandopadhyay.

Qt? Shouldn't it be in console languages (ncurses or dialog) given that
this will be used to install gentoo. I'm assuming there won't be X or qt

[gentoo-user] wavelan-cs - pcmcia-cs and dev-sources (2.6)

2003-08-05 Thread Ta^3 Deftkore
Wavelan-CS and Pcmcia-CS provides a set of modules for the kernel 2.4

So, both ebuilds in their DEPEND list only need linux-headers (that are 2.4.19/21).

I understand that there is no compatibily with modules for 2.4 in 2.6 kernel.

The question is, wavelan an pcmcia-cs (and other ebuilds that provides modules for
2.4 kernels) works on a 2.6 kernels?

Dummy question (because i can try and test it) but i will not be in my home for a
couple
of months, and dont have a good connection for download kernel sources. (Right now its
too
slow and i only have 1 compressed-ssh conexion to my home computer)

Sorry about my english. :)

Just for the sake of completeness in the thread and because I am also

be done but using maildrop instead of procmail?

maildrop in delivery mode should be called as maildrop -d destination

 Any ideas?

I've never used maildrop before so I'm not exactly sure but try replacing
'procmail' with 'maildrop -d':

cd path/to/dir/new
for file in *; do
maildrop -d $file
done

I'm not sure if that will work but it's worth a try.

That is exactly the problem. Trying to identify many of the AMD chips
correctly is a major challenge. Witness the warning about K6 chips in
recent releases of portage.

It's not really a matter of even adding more functionality, changing the
flag output is just a product of updating the database.

Hot Diggety! Steven Marcotte was rumored to have written:
By chance do you have ACPI (the power management stuff) enabled in the kernel?
If you do, you might try turning it off and see what happens.

Yeah, agreed. Looks like the LiveCD boot disables it with a acpi=off
parameter passed to the kernel, which is probably why it works then.

Likely use of ACPI broke IRQ routing in some way which probably explains
why the driver didn't process a single packet, is my best guess.
