If you run an Nvidia card I highly recommend the RenderAccel option as
well. (It enables hardware rendering acceleration which greatly speeds
your translucent X up) Here's the device section from my xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "GeForce4 MX440"
Driver "nvidia"
VideoRam65536
BusID "PCI:3:0:0"

Option "AGPMode" "8"
Option "AGPFastWrite" "true"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
# Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Option "NvAGP" "3"
Option "NoLogo" "1"
EndSection

You will most likely have problems with transparency since it is still a
new extension and is _not_ stable, yet. You may experience lock ups, but
the worst effects for me are mplayer troubles (-vo x11 won't let me go
full screen, boo) and weird drawing of my panel sometimes. (resizing
usually brings out that effect)

But still, it's nice to turn composite on every now and then for some
sweet eye candy. :) ... not just xfwm4, xfce4-panel and xfce4-iconbox
make use of it as well.

Hi Jason,

You fixed it for me, Jason, thanks, I'm grateful. I'd dispaired of a
solution as you know. Isn't this prepend something new? I can't recall
editing /etc/conf.d/net this way the last time I installed.

Biggest problems I have (in KDE3.4) is the huge amount of memory X comsumes
(512MB and 300 odd of swap after a few days is possible), wierd window
resizing errors (windows, and some widgets, aren't redrawn properly), on
occasion *all* windows can become transparent (including the window in
focus), and mplayer not working right (but -vo x11 just fixed that).

On the other hand this also means that links in emails no longer open because,
with this setting, KDE passes the location of a cached file to opera rather
than passing a url. So one way or another something won't work.

Ah, but it still gets run, as it's considered a critical service
(somewhere in /sbin/rc). If you really don't want to run it, remove
it from there too, and edit the scripts that say they 'need clock'.
Then stop the service, clear the drift, and reboot.

I have madwifi working with 2.6.11.5, on multiple cards (even at the
same time). In fact, I had it working with about all kernels except
2.6.10, IIRC. The problem is to find state of the madwifi cvs that
supports your choice of kernel. Obvious solution to that is to take a
new kernel, and use a recent cvs-snapshot.

While your hardware clock is set to GMT your system "thinks" its local. Here
is what you need to do:

First, edit /etc/rc.conf (or better /etc/conf.d/clock because that is the
current way to do it) and set CLOCK to "UTC". Then set your system clock to
your correct local time by using the command "date". Remove /etc/adjtime.
Lastly, adjust your hardware clock by using "hwclock -uw". From now on,
everything should be fine.

Very Cool, especially as this is using mdadm. But this might be a

Well, i've investigated this problem i bit now:
The problem doesn't seem to be the timeout of dhcpd or some strange
hotplug quirks. Normally, when i watched my system booting, i saw
something like '* Bringing eth0 up by DHCPD [OK]' . This line is no
longer there, allthough net.eth0 is in my default runlevel, and when I
start it manually i see this. Besides, net.eth0 doesn't apear in
rc-status [directly after booting]... . I've allready tried removing and
readding eth0 to the default runlevel, well I eaven tried to add it to
the boot runlevel - without sucess, it doesn't show up during boot, and
i've to restart the script manually sometimes to get a working
connection to the internet. Is it possible that it conficts with another
script ?

It just occurred to me that don't really use Gentoo's networking, I have
something a bit more custom for mobility reasons. The biggest problem
with dhcpcd is that it doesn't do anything with the WINS servers options
provided by the dhcp server.

Large windows networks that span subnets can use WINS servers for name
resolution. If they use both WINS and DNS, this is not a problem,
because the DNS server options get setup correctly. But one network I
plug into only has the windows file servers only in WINS, not DNS.

If you use ifplugd (and remove net.eth0 from your startup) things become
relatively simple. The ifplugd program activates the network when a
cable is plugged in, and deactivates it when it is removed.

I have an /etc/ifplugd/ifplugd.eth0 script that runs dhclient to acquire
or release addresses, and a /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks script that
sets up the wins servers for samba. The wins server part of exit-hooks
looks like this:

if test -n "$new_netbios_name_servers" ; then
printf "wins server = $new_netbios_name_servers\n" \
>/etc/samba/wins_servers.conf 2>/dev/null
fi
s=`/etc/init.d/samba status | grep "started$"`
if test -n "$s"; then
/etc/init.d/samba reload
fi

This creates /etc/samba/wins_servers.conf, which my /etc/samba/smb.conf
file includes. I also added "wins" to the hosts line in /etc/nsswitch.conf.

My next task is to recognize the time server option of dhcp and run an
ntpclient to synchronize with the network time.

If you need more help or advice after reading man ifplugd, dhclient, and
dhcp-options, just ask.

_media player_ flamefests?
Never had one of those before, only vi/emacs, ie/ff, windows/linux and
gentoo/other linux.

Do tell; with the exception of the lack of the real codecs (for some
reason it's masked in portage), mplayer plays most of the video and
all of the streaming audio I've thrown at it :).

The above "Screen" section is corrupt. You have an EndSubSection with
no preceeding "SubSection", and a "SubSection" at the end.

You might try "X -configure" then "X -allowMouseOpenFail -config ". This lets the X server autodetect and
autoconfigure everything, and the new xorg.conf should give you a good
starting point for changes. On my system, it doesn't get the correct
pointer path (/dev/input/mice instead of /dev/mouse), so I have to start
the server with -allowMouseOpenFail. One important note...if you don't
already know, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace should kill the X server started this
way...or Ctrl+Alt+F1 to return to the console.

Hope this helps.

[gentoo-user] x-forwarding or vnc or ?

2005-04-03 Thread Grant
Ever since I got started with Linux I thought the whole
x-forwarding/vnc thing was really cool. I finally have a reliable
wireless Gentoo network, and I'd love to set some of that up. I'd
like to be able to do 2 things:

1. Start an X session that is running on that computer but is
controlled on this computer.

2. Share an X session that is running on that computer between it and
this computer. That would mean the two people at the two computers
would see the same thing, and either of them could take control of the
inputs.

What kind of stuff should I set up to handle this? I'd like to be
able to do #1 and #2 within the local network and over the Internet.

Never used this particular feature, but I did try to start my xserver
with "-br", and it seems the Xservers file went away in KDE 3.4. Take a
look in /usr/kde/3.4/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, particularly the setting
for "ReserveServers", this seems to be what you are after.

For me, it is habit. I always use "Reply to all" for personal and work

on Gentoo-user. I filed a bug report on thunderbird for this, but there

To copy over only /usr/portage/sys-apps/baselayout/ is inelegant - it
brings in only the ebuilds for baselayout, which might depend on other
packages in the tree.
The best thing to do is grab a whole Portage snapshot on a network
connected machine - you'll find these at [UK mirror]
.
When you've copied this across to the networkless machine & unpacked it
the right place you can then find out what packages to download by
typing `emerge -pf world`. This should give you a whole list of URLs
which you can wget from the networked machine.

This doesn't seem to be working. I followed the instructions to
emerge -fp about 10 different packages, but I get this output:

When using -f (--fetchonly) and -p (--pretend) together emerge dumps all
possible download urls for each package it knows about. I think this is
documented somewhere. Have you synced the portage tree though? It would
not be wise to freshen up just one subdirectory on /usr/portage tree.
You need to get a recent snapshot and update manually. This link has a
little more on it:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Downloading_distfiles_on_another_machine

It would be something like:
wget http://gentoo.osuosl.org/snapshots/portage-(most recent date).tar.bz2
# ... transfer to your target machine using cd or usb stick ...
# on target machine put it into /var/tmp
# then:
cd /var/tmp
tar fxj portage-(most recent date).tar.bz2
cd portage
# ... run this:
/usr/lib/portage/bin/portageq portdir
# and check that it returns a sane value like /usr/portage and:
rsync -av --progress --stats --delete --delete-after
--exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/packages' --exclude='/local' .
`/usr/lib/portage/bin/portageq portdir`
cd ..
rm -rf portage
rm -f portage-(most recent date).tar.bz2
# ... and now you got a recent portage snapshot to work with ...
emerge -vuDfp world <-- to see what you get out of date

i havent tested this but the code in the middle i got out of
emerge-webrsync so i guess it should work.

[gentoo-user] Video capture using Dazzle Digital Vidio Creator 120

2005-04-03 Thread Mark Knecht
Hi,
Has anyone done this? Can you recommend some apps that will make
video capture and relatively simple movie editing easy for my 12 year
old? He's capturing XBox tricks and makes me boot my Gentoo laptop
back into Win XP so that he can do the capture.

The DVC120 is visible to things like usbview but after that I don't
know where to turn. I tried Kino but it seemed very 1394 specific. I
had bad experiences with Cinelera on another platform and am not
anxious to build that unless it's significantly improved.

I'm running a custom 2.6.9 kernel if it matters.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,

Ok, pump merged ... Will my net.eth0 script now use pump automatically
after unmerging dhcpd or are some further interventions needed ?

Thanks Brett I did find some good stuff. I want to be able to do
something in the style of vnc. It sounds like I should set up
realvnc, tightvnc, or use NX. Do these each have ups and downs I
should figure out before choosing one, or is one generally better than
another?

You should run "emerge -uDtpv world" (note the "t" option) and show us the
output.

You're welcome.
Each has it's pros and cons so I'd suggest looking at them and checking
past posts for some discussions. To be honest, I've just started looking
at this myself but got sidetracked on other issues I have to solve on my
system. I know Mark Knecht has been working on this - one of the threads
he started.

As I understand it vnc is like a remote desktop (and there is an rdesktop
that lets you get to Windows boxes) control in that you can take over a
machine and control it remotely. I've used it on Windows boxes before so
I didn't have to physically go to the box. If you want to run X apps you
need to use X to run apps on another machine that show up on your display,
keyboard, etc. - that's different than vnc.

NX is IMHO the most complete. With it you are able to start a whole
remote gnome/kde session, and have it displayed on your local box
(yes, including the splash screen :)), as well as connect to remote
vnc and rdp servers (like win XP or win 2000/2003 terminal server).

On their page (http://www.nomachine.com) there is a "test
drive" (requires free registration), so you can try it (the sessions
you see run on one of their test servers).

I think realvnc4 is what you want. They used to have a module for the
XFree server, hopefully this works on Xorg, too. With this module enabled
in your xorg.conf you can share your Xorg sessions via vnc. It's up to
you to set up SSH forwarding for that vnc port, but I'd strongly suggest
doing so. Note that i mean to use the "Xorg" X server, not tightvnc/
realvnc (although it's realvnc technology).

With NX and the VNC-X-Servers you'd have to run a vnc/NX viewer fullscreen
on top on a Xorg server. I don't think NX supports concurrent access, but
I don't know for sure. VNC would work, but will be unusually slow on
local side - and no hw acceleration at all.

Try mplayer -ao help to see a list of available
audio-subsystems.

Then try the different audio systems, maybe

mplayer -ao esound pathtovideo.avi

Try different soundsystems until perhaps one of them even
crashes with mplayer.

Then reinstall this package.

I do not know if it will work, but that's what I'd try first.

[gentoo-user] help! xorg doesn't recognise my pci-express card!

2005-04-03 Thread daniel
So i finally went out and got a shiny new computer:

  AMD64 3500+
  MSI K8N Neo4
  ATI Radeon X800XL (PCIe)

...and while Gentoo installed just fine, X won't start. It keeps failing
with:

  (EE) No devices detected

I've tried using the Xorg "radeon" drivers as well as installing ati-drivers
and using "fglrx" with no joy. I *think* it might have something to do with
the output of `cat /proc/pci`:

  ---
  Bus 5, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: PCI device 1002:554d (ATI Technologies Inc)
(rev 0).
  IRQ 7.
  Prefetchable 64 bit memory at 0xb000 [0xbfff].
  Non-prefetchable 64 bit memory at 0xfe20 [0xfe20].
  I/O at 0x9e00 [0x9eff].
  Bus 5, device 0, function 1:
Display controller: PCI device 1002:556d (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 0).
  Non-prefetchable 64 bit memory at 0xfe21 [0xfe21].

I noticed that it doesn't really give the name of the card, so maybe it
doesn't know how to use it? There's no option in the kernel config to enable
PCI-Express in this case -- not sure why, since there is on my other
athlon-tbird machine. Is this because I'm using an athlon64?

Help me please. There's nothing quite like bringing home a new shiny toy like
this and only being able to use windows with it :-(

Well: I've tried oss and alsa because I don't have any other sound

imediatly kills the gnome-volume-control ...

I'm not familiar with Gnome in common or gnome-volume-control
in detail, but maybe GVC is buggy or there have been changes
in ALSA that make GVC incompatible.

You do not need the alsa-driver-package, because the drivers
are now in the kernel. But after the kernel update, did you
also update alsa-lib and optionally - if installed -
alsa-utils? I recommend to do so to avoid incompatibilities.

Your suggestions worked great except I had to use '/usr/portage'
instead of '/usr/lib/portage/bin/portageq portdir' with the rsync
command.

I ended up with what seemed like a nice links.txt file, but 'wget -i
links.txt' from the networked machine returns all 403 and 404 errors.
I thought this might have something to do with the fact that the
floppy I used to transfer the links.txt file was vfat, so

Hmm, I don't think that my problems are caused due changes the alsa
drivers, as i did not change them before they started. But it is
possible that this has something to do with an upgrade of alsa-lib which

I'll try remerging those packages, allthough my problems are just the
same as before the kernel upgrade and the packages themselfs are up to
date - but who knows. I'll post the results of this experiment .

[gentoo-user] OT: reply prefix in evolution

Hi all,

is it possible to configure evoultion to recognize other prefixes then
"Re:" as a reply? I get many emails with other prefixes like "AW:", but
evolution does create a new thread then in threaded-view :(

Any ideas?

I'm no ALSA professional, but AFAIK alsa-lib is the API for
audio applications as well as for mixers (maybe I'm wrong).

So, it may be possible that GVC is incompatible with alsa-lib
now.

Reemerging alsa-lib revelad some interresting details:
 * If you are using an emu10k1 based sound card, and you are upgrading
 * from a version of alsalib <1.0.6, you will need to recompile packages
 * that link against alsa-lib due to some ABI changes between 1.0.5 and
 * 1.0.6 unique to that hardware. See the following URL for more
information:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65347
Maybe I should look after that ...

I've never used DVDshrink. When I first thought about backing up some
of my DVD's, I thought about using DVDshrink. However, with
'lxdvdrip', I don't appear to need DVDshrink. Plus, lxdvdrip is nice
enough to show all the commands it uses to copy the DVD (it's
basically a scripted front-end to a slew of other DVD applications
like transcode, DVDauthor, DVDwizard, growisofs, etc.) so I can run
any of them manually depending on what I want to accomplish (ie: if I
just want to create backups on my computer for later use, just use
DVDauthor or transcode. If I want to burn a copy of something I've
already ripped, just run the mkisofs/growisofs command).

In regards to rip times, depending on whether the DVD is dual or
single, the streaming time can take between 30 - 60 minutes. The
burning takes about 10-15 minutes.

Looking a little closer at the output of 'wget -i links.txt' :

--17:14:20--
http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/sysvinit-2.86.tar.gz%20http:/distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/distfiles/sysvinit-2.86.tar.gz%20ftp:/ftp.cistron.nl/pub/people/miquels/software/sysvinit-2.86.tar.gz%20ftp:/sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/daemons/init/sysvinit-2.86.tar.gz
   => `sysvinit-2.86.tar.gz'
Connecting to distfiles.gentoo.org[216.165.129.135]:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
17:14:20 ERROR 404: Not Found.

In links.txt each of the paths for any given file are concatenated
(correct usage?) with a space character, and wget is trying to fetch
the entire string. Does anyone know how to make wget use this file
properly?

I'm not sure it is a joke. Windows as a whole is awful, but the NT kernel was
designed by Dave Cutler (creator of RSX-11M and VMS) and it has earned a lot
of respect from people who know about these things. It is perhaps the only
genuine innovation MS has ever produced. I'm not saying it's better or worse
than Linux or the BSDs. It may indeed by worse, but it is still a
respectable attempt at a kernel.

When I was running XP I installed Interix. I didn't end up doing much with
it, but it was very useful to be able to kill -9 runaway win 32 processes -
it meant I had to reboot less often. At the time I wondered whether it might
be possible to shut down the win32 subsystem when i didn't need it for
multimedia stuff and work the *nix way, which I found much less
uncomfortable. It wouldn't surprise me too much to hear that someone has
actually succeeded in doing so. And isn't there a project somewhere to run a
linux kernel as an NT subsystem in order to get access to those windoze
drivers? Surely this GeNToo, if it is for real, would be a more elegant way
of going about this.

The problems I have found with Windows are
1. the insecurity, instability and bloat of the win32 subsystem
2. the crappiness and unreliability of NTFS
3. the lack of tools to tinker with the bootloader to correct problems arising
from the crappiness of NTFS and other causes.

Interix does nothing to address #1, but a project like the one described
would. I assume it would also come with #3. That would just leave the
crappiness of NTFS to deal with. So what if the ReactOS people were to
develop a reiser4 driver? Then you could have a dual boot system - Linux and
the other one - sharing a /home partition and using a reliable and efficient
(IMO) file system running the same applications - kmail etc - just in one of
those systems you could launch the win32/wine subsystem (or an improved and
less bloated wine-based susbstitute) when you wanted it to run cubase or some
fancy Adobe sofware, and then shut it down again when you finish. No dealing
with windoze update either. What if you could, say, have windows-native
audio apps exchanging audio and midi data using jack, possibly over a
network? That's something I wouldn't turn my nose up at.

If wine becomes much easier to work with on Linux then this kind of idea won't
interest me so much, but for now I am interested because there are so many
windows apps I miss, even though I don't miss windows itself one bit.

You had problems with alsa 1.0.8? I had problems on every single gentoo box
that installed alsa 1.0.9 sources. Alsa was puking up all of the place.
Really weird problems too... Stuck this in /etc/portage/package.mask

>media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.8-r9
>media-sound/alsa-oss-1.0.8-r9

and re-emerged the evertything that used alsa and I'm back in business!

You should have heard the cry-baby going on :')

Above, I note where things fall apart, trying to find the file...
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.4/libstdc++.la
Looking for libstdc++.la anywhere on my harddrive, gives the following...

> [m1800][root][~]find / -name libstdc++.la

Note "3.3.5", not "3.3.4". Not too surprising, considering...

How do I tell the system (or the ebuild) to look in the "3.3.5"
directory? Anyone else have this problem? While we're at it, should I
be reporting a bug?

Hard-coding version numbers is an *OLD* mistake. I remeber back in
the days of DOS (1986), when people first found out that Bill Gates was
wrong... we did need more than 640K. Intel put out an expanded memory
card. The driver-install routine demanded DOS 3.0 or DOS 3.1. I had
DOS 3.2 on my machine, and the install routine refused to work. I had
to run around the office until I found someone with a DOS 3.1 machine,
and boot floppies. I booted from the floppies, and installed the
expanded memory driver, which worked just fine in DOS 3.2. If you're
wondering, yes, I will be turning 55 in October.

Obviously, you have not done even the bare minimum of trying to help yourself.
This has been discussed so many times on this list, I can't even keep track.
The answer is a one-line shell command.

Let me guess... your last package merged was gcc, an upgrade from version
3.3.4.

Try searching the mailing list archives. Or Google. Or something. But you have
to at least try to help yourself before others will help you.

[gentoo-user] xmms problem playing streaming mp3

2005-04-03 Thread Chris Bare
I don't know when this stopped working, because I don't use the feature that
often, but I'm no longer able to play mp3 streams over the net with xmms. When
I try to play a location absolutely nothing happens. It doesn't say
connecting, I don't see any packets on ethereal.
I know xmms was recently split into more packages, but I looked through the
packages and didn't see anything that I thought I needed to add. I can still
play local mp3s for whatever that's worth.
Anyone have any ideas?

[gentoo-user] how do you avoid petty upgrades?

2005-04-03 Thread Robert Persson
It is my understanding - and please tell me if I'm wrong - that the "r"
suffixes on the ends of ebuild versions represent fixes to the ebuild, rather
than to the package itself. If that is so, would that mean that
category/thing-x.y.z-r2 won't contain anything important (such as security
fixes) that isn't already in version x.y.z-r1?

In that case, is there a way to avoid these petty upgrades when I "emerge -u
world"?

Thanks

Not always.
The -rX builds represent Gentoo-specific updates, ie something like a
new patch, that sorta thing. This can include security fixes, if they
are released as a patch rather than as an actual update to the upstream
package, which would result in a version bump for the ebuild.

As to blocking all *-r bumps, I don't think you can.

Walter the problem is not isolated to flac. Don't search on flac, search on the

Your best bet to find out why there was a revision is to look at the
changelog. It will show why it was revised and then you can decide for
yourself if it is relevant to you or not. Sometimes they are security
patches, sometimes bugfixes only for specific archs, etc., etc..

xmms-1.2.10-r13, I suppose...

There's a bug, aging 2 or 3 weeks now.

My workaround:
added in /etc/portage/package.mask
=media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r13

and downgraded to a working version.

[gentoo-user] register to know certain event?

2005-04-03 Thread éæ å
I hope I am not the only one who have this requirement: I am a normal Gentoo
user, I wish to:

1) if there is a new version of xorg-x11 gets stable on sparc (that is,
keyword masked by 'sparc') I get email notification of that;
2) if there is a new version of gnome (in my case, gnome-2.10) gets stable
on sparce, please let me know.

Currently what I am doing is check portage once a week to see if it happens.
Is there such a service I can register to see all the event related to
certain packages?

Just an idea.

WINS maps NetBIOS names to IP addresses - so unless you're running
NetBeui it doesn't seem useful?

Evolution nor any mail clients uses that as a basis for threading.
(AFAIK). They use these headers embedded in the email messages instead

I don't think so, but you could always write a script to download a
certain ebuild, and compare it to what is in your own portage, and to
tell you if it had any changes.

[gentoo-user] Re-Compile With Non-Default Options

2005-04-03 Thread Michael Haan
I'm not sure what the default gentoo e-builds for mytht include, but I
just dropped the dime on an HDTV and may want to include the firewire
support. My best guess is that means a manual re/compile. Is that
true? How do I do that?

another approach would be to get a script to download the appropriate
packages.gentoo.org page, for example:

http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/?category=x11-base;name=xorg-x11

and parse the output for what you want.

etc-update is for updating config files after emerge, when there are new
config files for the packages you have updated. It is not needed to run
after you changed some files yourself.

Overlooked this one. Anyway, can you post the relevant lines from fstab?

Bye...

but if I *-r bumps do sometimes include security patches then blocking them
arbitrarily would probably not be such a good idea after all.

Thanks Brian, Chris and Nick for your suggestions and for clearing that up for
me.

don't forget a security patch can be as small as changing the default
configuration or startup options.
