[gentoo-user] Re: ebuild for gcc-independent llvm and clang for linux

2013-12-26 Thread Takayuki Yamaguchi
Sorry for earlier mis-send.

I send the article again.

I'm going to build and install llvm and clang packages in my Linux PC as
1. Binaries of llvm and claag installed finally were compiled by clang.
2. The binaries of 1. depend on libc++.so instead of libstdc++.so.
3. libc++.so was installed by portage.
4. The binaries of llvm, clang, and libc++.so are not linked with libgcc.
If linkage with libraries like libgcc is necessary, compiler_rt is linked.

Checking the ebuilds of llvm, I found

sys-libs/libcxx
in DEPEND. But from the comment of revision, append libcxx in
dependency is for freebsd.

I want to ask

I. Building packages described above can be created using ebuilds in
main repository in linux?
II. if I. is not possible, any ebuild of llvm and clang exists anywhere?

If ebuilds that fill II. are not exist, I will to try create such ebuilds.

I ran into this too in the kde-4.4 era (when kmail2 was showing first

Nowadays I use Tbird and all issues just go away.

I don't know to what extend the concept of 'Google for the desktop' at the
hey-days of Web 2.0 made devs think that running a mysql database on a desktop
machine to store meta-tags on everything a user possessed was a 'great idea!'
Perhaps there are users who decide to click on the desktop to search for their
files, emails, contacts and what not to justify taking the desktop development
in this direction. None of the people I know do this, nor do I. Until
Alzheimer's sets in I tend to use my brain to search and find things, where I
have placed them contextually within my cognitive map. So far this works fine
for me - well, most of the time. :p So clearly the bloatware direction taken
by the KDE devs is not suitable for me and my immediate needs and that's one
of the reasons I use Enlightenment.

Irrespective of this, the functionality of semantic desktop search, when I
tried it, drove me insane (e.g. it would launch Skype to dial the telephone
number of on of my address book contacts I searched on, instead of creating a
new mail message).

Now, if I can only wean myself off kmail-1 before it is removed from portage
...

[gentoo-user] Fresco Logic FL1000G USB 3.0 Controller not working

2013-12-26 Thread Konstantinos Agouros
Hi,

I have an ASUS Rock 880 Motherboard with an FL1000G USB 3.0 controller.
xhci_hcd is loaded but it does not work. When I try to connect a USB
3.0 device (I have a harddisk, and my display works as 3.0 hub) I get:

hub 9-0:1.0: Could not disable port 1 after 2000 ms

or similar for the harddisk.

Googling I found for Ubuntu users, that adding pci=nomsi to the
commandline should solve this however I am running in a Xen Dom0 that
might have some influence? I still have no luck getting it to work.

Anybody got a clue?
Kernel is gentoo-sources-3.10.17

[gentoo-user] akonadi, imap mail folders don't appear when created

When I create a subfolder at top level of my imap account with kmail2, it does
not appear in kmail.

Versions involved:
kde-base/kontact-4.10.5
kde-base/kmail-4.10.5
app-office/akonadi-server-1.9.2
kde-base/akonadiconsole-4.10.5

Strangly, I appears after a while on my second system (my laptop), but not on
the desktop where I created it.

Sometimes, also sub-folders are not shown properly when created.

I tried reloading the imap data, stoppingstarting akonadi-servers, even re-
login or reboot did not help. The only thing that really helped was removing
the imap-agent from akonadi and re-installing it. It takes a long time until
all akonadi/kmail/mysql/nepomuk/virtuoso-processes are finished with their job
and you can do something useful with your computer again.

I understand that akonadi is asynchronous in building/sync'ing its tables, so
you should wait until it finishes doing what it needs to do. Alternatively,
use another application not related to KDEPIM which has proven to be a
disaster for many (previous) KDE users.

I also run into those kinds of things with TBird; and there's no
right-click option to resync things. However, it always comes right if
I just leave it alone.

So here's my theory:

TBird is designed to operate async in the background. A amil server can
pump mails into imap folders faster than any client can keep up, so I
believe the TBird devs don't even try. Instead, the just let TBird get
on with syncing one thing at a time until it's all done. And then the
universe returns to normal :-)

I can't explain what we see when TBird works, all I can tell you is that
if I leave it alone, it always just works out fine (where leave it
alone is on the order of about an hour or so for my gmail account that
goes back 8 years, and that exchange-thingy the IT dept at work still
believe has something to do with email...)

How many memory is reasonable for virtuoso to use?
I just had a view via htop, and I was surprised to see virtuoso-t processes
occupying more than 1.5 GB (!), althoug there is a maximum of 128MB defined.

 Memory leak?

 Versions involved:
 dev-db/virtuoso-server-6.1.6
 kde-base/kde-meta-4.10.5

What column in htop shows that number?

top, htop, and all their friends do not display what most people assume
they display. Modern OSes (for more than a decade now) manage memory in
a way that makes it impossible to answer how much memory is this app
using?

If you are looking at the VIRT column, just ignore it, that column is
practically useless for most rational viewings of {h,}top

 I have a set of images of pages of a printed article, which I scanned ;

Do you have imagemagick installed? You may use convert to do so, e.g.
 'convert page1.jpg page2.jpg ... output.pdf'

Thanks : that shortens the process a bit.

Imagemagick + Poppler provide the tools to treat PDFs as if paper dox,
ie unstaple, rotate, restaple etc. HTH others.

[gentoo-user] kernel - locating option

2013-12-26 Thread Joseph

I need to enable one option in the kernel-3.5.7-gentoo CONFIG_FHANDLE
systemd need it.
I know it is in General setup section. Looking location with /

Symbol: FHANDLE [=n]
  Type : boolean
  Prompt: open by fhandle syscalls
  Defined at init/Kconfig:295
Location:
  - General setup
Selects: EXPORTFS [=n]

But I can not seem to location it, which option is it. I'm using make
menuconfig

Is there a better tool to configure/search for these options; this make menconfig is not user friendly.

The current stable gentoo kernel is 3.10.17, so what is it that you are
seeking with this old 3.5.7 version?

Run emerge --sync to get the latest sources and then look under general to
find it. It is under 'General setup' alright:

General setup ---
...
[*] System V IPC
[*] POSIX Message Queues
[*] open by fhandle syscalls --This one!

HTH.

Thank you! Yes, I found it.
Though, it would be nice if I look for an option to enable, from search menu
/ if it finds it I should be able to select it :-/

I think xconfig may be easier for this purpose? I'm not sure, but there are
other ncurses, or GUI-fied kernel configuration applications. Try this to see
if it serves your purpose when logged into an X session:

  make xconfig

Use Ctrl+f to search for particular modules. Don't forget to save your
changes before you build your new kernel!

I tried to search for CONFIG_FHANDLE using xconfig and it can not even find
it; so this application is useless :-/
