Re: [gentoo-user] Auto-mount USB device
Hi Iain, Yes, it worked, no icons on gnome desktop. $ ls -al /media/disk $ ls -al /media/disk-l showed 2 partitions of the USB enclosure. # gnome-volume-propertie ... Mount removable drives when hot-plugged Mount removable media when inserted Browse removable media when inserted all checked OK, we're getting somewhere!! Something strange happened here. After serveral boots the trick did not work any more. Login as user # `gnome-volume-manager ` (gnome-volume-manager:6102): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed. * end * However # ls /media disk still showing one mount point of the partitions (the HD on USB enclosure has 2 partitions, both on ext3). Another disk-1 disappeared. But it has not mounted. I have to run; # mount /dev/sdb1 /media/disk I haven't figured out the cause. I made several tests with the same result. I used to have this issue (drives would mount, but not show up on the desktop). I fixed it by upgrading. Have you considered gnome 2.14? I'm running gnome-light of version 2.14.2. I'm prepared to install the full gnome. But I haven't figured out whether just run; # emerge -av gnome OR # emerge --unmerge gnome-light emerge gnome I have installed some packages on gnome-light Did you try the gconf key: gconftool-2 --type bool --set /system/storage/display_internal_hard_drives true No. How did your versions of software compare with those listed in comment #68 in http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107784 ? I read this thread before on sorting out the problem of the mobo (ASUS A8N-VM) on this Gentoo box. The mouse pointer always hangs if without adding noapic on the line on grub.conf booting the kernel I also came across another thread; http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=57791page=6 At this juncture I can't ascertain whether my problems encountered coming from the software or the mobo. Hi Iain, I actually meant brand chipset if you know it :) But nevermind, your Oh Sorry misunderstood your question Brand - Nil Chipset JM20337 0615 LGEZ1 86 11097027 There are dozens of these devices in the market. I just selected an economic one. AFAIK this seems to be OK. There were problems with various versions of udev, gvm, but you seem to have avoided those... Read here for some more info if you're feeling adventurous: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107784 Noted with tks. OK just for curiosity. I found automount worked on this USB enclose when installed on FC5_64 on this PC (on another HD) and also on FC5_32 on another PC, both with icons displayed on gnome desktop. Of course! well spotted Andrew! you need to start gvm - run `gnome-volume-manager ` from a terminal, then logout and back in again, and see if it works. Yes, it worked, no icons on gnome desktop. $ ls -al /media/disk $ ls -al /media/disk-l showed 2 partitions of the USB enclosure. After that, you could try the preferences for gvm, (in preferences removable drives and media) and make sure automounting and such is checked. Re: [gentoo-user] About dig command and others
Hi Boyd, Is there another method to check/verify my suspicion. TIA Based on the original post, it sounds to me like your ISP is (intentionally or not) blocking that site. There's very little (probably nothing) you could do to prove they are doing it intentionally. Actually I'm not interested on the site being blocked which is/was censored to a blank page. It was because of an article against the owner of my ISP. This owner owns 2 ISPs. All their subcribers can't browse the blocked site. This happening went to public on newspapers. Some subscribers made complaint to the authority concerned. What you've already done (tried via other ISPs and a proxy service) already proves the site is blocked I can browse the site via proxydom.com without problem. On my search installing foxyproxy, the addon, on Firefox can browse the site. I'm running SeaMonkey on this Gentoo box. I'm now learning how to make foxyproxy to work on SeaMonkey. My sole interest is to learn accumulating my IT knowhow. How to prove this malpractice is done by my ISP. (although, I suppose it could be the site blocking your ISP and not vice-versa). The owner of the site also made complaint to the telecommunication authority here. Others noted with tks. B.R. SL -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Re: [gentoo-user] recompiing kernel quesiton
Hi Pawel Kraszewski, Tks for your advice. First of all - you may try the installation CD of Gentoo - boot it and give 'halt -p' at command prompt. If it switches off, that means error in your config. If it doesn't, this might be the hardware fault. I made following 2 tests 1) Booted Gentoo install-amd64-minimal-2006-1 Ran # shutdown -h now (also tried poweroff) System halted but not poweroff 2) Booted Knoppix 5 Ran # shutdown -h now System halted and poweroff immediately. Hi Neil, Tks for your advice. That depends on the type of discs you want to make. I prefer plain old kisofs + growisofs for data DVDs and tovid for video DVDs. Mainly for data burning. Hi Rumen, Check gnome-extra/nautilus-cd-burner don't know if it's included in gnome-light though. gnome-light is a very basic desktop with a few packages installed. Application Accessories - Terminal Internet - SeaMonkey System Tools - Avahi Zeorconf Browser/File Browser/New Login/New Login in a Nested Window I have to install my needed packages to run it. At the beginning I installed gnome-light for test only. Later I found it a light-weight desktop even more basic than Xfce. Dislike the full gnome with some packages installed which I never use. Hi Neil, Tks for your advice. dvd+rw-tools. It does for DVDs what cdrecord does for CDs. Despite the name, it is for DVD-R(W) as well as DVD+RW It is the tool for burning both DVD+/-R(W), but not working well on DVD+R(W) If you emerge k3b with the dvdr USE flag, it will pull in all of these as dependencies. I use it frequently on FC5_64. It is for KDE but also works on Gnome. Before I ran command lines for burning CD/CD-R(W) until I found k3b Whether edit /etc/make.conf USE=...dvdr then run; # emerge --sync emerge -avuDN world # emerge k3b If I'm wrong pls correct me. Hi Neil, # ls -l /dev/vg /dev/mapper ls: /dev/vg: no such file or directory /dev/mapper: total 0 crw-rw 1 root root control # ls -l /dev | grep vg no printout # vgchange -a y -bash: vgchange: command not found That's because you haven't installed lvm2, emerge it. During installing Gentoo, vgchange -a y must be run to activate vg then all Logical volumes will be activated simultaneously. Otherwise /dev/vg could not be found and the above devices/directories can't be mounted as well. vgchange is present on the live CD, but not on your system. Gentoo started w/o error/complaint after emerge lvm2 I found out the cause why after chroot some commands not found. Because after chroot /dev/vg/usr, /dev/vg/home, etc. were not mounted disregarding having be mounted at the begining before chroot. I further discovered the cause of the later because I did not repeat the step to edit /etc/lvm/lvm.conf as written on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/lvm2.xml;. Athough at the beginning before chroot vg and lv can be activated with all devices mounted which gave me a wrong concept considering this step being not necessary on exit/re-enter chroot. But after chroot all devices were umounted. Installing X Window server went through w/o problem by following the doc:- http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml; Further problem came on installing Gnome. I'll start another topic later. Folks, lot of tks for your advice. B.R. SL -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] xorg.conf problem
Hi folks, I can't find an xorg.conf.example file I just finished installing X window server. # X -config /root/xorg.conf.new created a working xorg.conf for me. I don't need xorg.conf.example. Then; # cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf That is all. Some minor adjustment has to be made, in particular, the mouse, InputDevice section. I followed the document; http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml of course, not 100% copying its content. I have to make some minor change for my case. B.R. Re: [gentoo-user] xorg.conf problem
Hi Dale, I recall having to work a bit to get it to see my mouse too. X will not start without the little rat being found. Mine is: OptionDevice /dev/input/mouse0 The above line works for me too. OR /dev/input/mice also works here. On the document mentioned by me previously, Code Listing 4.2 and 4.4 did not work for me. Actually the file xorg.conf.new generated was almost 100% working here, except the mouse, which needed ajustment as mentoned. B.R. SL -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] Problem on installing Gnome (gnome-light)
Hi folks, I followed The GNOME Configuration HOWTO http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml installing Gnome. Steps writen there went though w/o problem until upto; Code Listing 2.7: Adding hald and avahi-dnsconfd to the default runlevel On running; # /etc/init.d/hald start I failed to find hald but hald.sh instead. Pressed reset to restart Gentoo. On booting there was no error/complaint displayed. Gentoo started with login prompted up properly. Login # startx X window started. Please advise; 1) Do I need to reinstall Gnome? (remark: installed gnome-light) If YES how to remove Gnome, the unfinished package? 2) How to overcome the problem mentioned? I must run the command line in question on 2nd installation of Gnome. Furthermore I forgot mentioning on running; # rc-update del famd default (Code Listing 2.6: Switching to gamin) fam can't be found. TIA B.R. SL -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Hi Neil, Tks for your advice. # modprobe de-mod FATAL: Module dm-mod not found. You may have it compiled i the kernel rather than as a module. It makes little sense to use a module when you need it all the time. I'll try to recompile the kernel on Gentoo itself. But I don't know whether it works because some devices/partitions not mounted. Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Again - problem on installing Gentoo (Gentoo started)
Hi Dirk, Your previous mail stated that you did not emerge lvm2. However, /dev/vg/usr IS a logical volume so it will never work until you install the lvm2 software. He has EVMS installed, he doesn't need lvm2 tools. My problem is LV not being activated on booting so all devices such /dev/vg/usr, home, opt, etc. can't not been mounted. At time of installation ; # vgchange -a y must be run to activate LV. I'm now looking around where (/rc.d/ ?) I have to add this command. I tried creating /tmp/newroot, /tmp/newroot/mnt, etc.in anticipating mounting LV. But found it did not work. Actually Gentoo started but the above devices unable to mount making some files can't be found. Other problem are of minor matters. In the past I have been playing around on FC5 and Ubuntu 6.06 partitioning HD with LVM on command lines but never work. I was compelled using GUI to get it done. Then it worked without problem. I don't know its reason. B.R. SL -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Hi Dirk, At time of installation I ran; # modprobe dm-mod No printout Afterwards I found it for Loading the LVM2 module. I ran LVM not LVM2 so I did not care it further. There is no LVM2 module. Sorry, it's on the book: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/lvm2.xml Code Listing 2.1: Loading the LVM2 module # modprobe dm-mod Are you using both lvm2 tools _and_ EVMS? Then it is clear that the latter will fail. I haven't installed LVM2 intentionally. Neither I selected LVM2 module in kernel Device Drivers, IIRC, nor I ran etc-update. Re: [gentoo-user] Re: Again - problem on installing Gentoo (Gentoo started)
Hi Jeff, Sorry if this sounds harsh but if it works from the GUI but not from the commandline then the problem exists between keyboard and chair: you're not typing in the commands properly. Hi Bryan, Tks for your advice. Why not just use rsync? setup cron to just sync the two directories (/home/blah with /mnt/disk/blah) over and over? Such an arrangement will only sync /home/user on /mnt/usb_enclosure/user at fixed time, periodically, not instaneously whenever there is a change on /home/user Or just set your hom directory to /mnt/disk/user ? I intend using the USB device for dual purpose. 1) as mirror of /home/user. So when there is a problem there is a second copy of data on the USB enclosure. 2) using it as mobile storge device which can be plugged in on any Linux PC when I work on the latter. B.R. Re: [gentoo-user] File replication
Hi Neil, Do you really need such frequent syncing? Bear in mind the limited write lifespan of flash memory, if you have a file in your home directory that is frequently updated, you could wear out the memory in a short time. what's wrong with using a script that syncs your hard disk with the flash drive before unmounting it? Mounted inside the USB enclosure is a HD. I'll use old HD for this purpose. Frequently I work on at least 2 PCs running different Linux OS. With such a device, USB enclosure, it'll ease my work on consolidating the working data on 2 PCs. Otherwise I have to use a pendrive for tranporting working data between 2 PCs. OR compressing them as tarball and send the latter as attachment to an email. Tks B.R. SL -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] File replication
Hi Etaoin, Tks for your advice. If you have networking, why not set up a network share of some kind (nfs, smb, or even ssh via shfs) and mount it (under the same path) from each computer you work on? This avoid having to replicate data and, with decent network speed, is nearly as fast as disk I/O. The PCs, a workstation only, are not connected to network. Neither I'll run 2/3 PCs simultaneously. Previously I did it in this way making use of an addtional network card connecting 2 PCs. Later I ceased using this method because another PC was standing idly. Re: [gentoo-user] File replication
Hi Neil, but I still don't see why you need real-time mirroring. A script to sync the drive before unmounting would give you an accurate mirror. A cron script to check if the drive is mounted and sync it every hour would cut down on the amount of data to sync when unmounting. If running sync periodically on poweroff the PC there will be some files not yet updated. I think there may be an existing tool for this purpose.
