Ralph As a Grumpy old man one of my pet hates are these contact forms, especially when you are trying to help or if its technical you've already tried most things before you "write in". That said, working in IT service I've seen the garbage that can come in on an internal service desk. So on a public facing one trying to qualify the issue and get people to self help really does focus the resource where it is actually needed. Though if I play the programme on the iPlayer site, no subtitles appear and I don't see a way to turn them on but then playing in the browser is not normally something I do. They're normally available for that series but this one episode lacks them AFAICS and I want to check it's not something I'm doing wrong. ... I've had a couple of private replies to this and it doesn't seem to be GiP related or Kodi as it happens on different hardware and different programmes as well so I'm happy to close this one. Mock the Week subtitles
I've set the GiP preferences to always download subtitles. They all work quite well apart from Mock the Week. The subtitles are consistently 12 seconds out. If you are using the --force to override because you have already downloaded the program once, you could try editing the download_history file and remove the entry, then you wouldn't need to use the --force when you run the command. This morning I wanted the subtitles only for Thailand: Earth's Tropical Paradise and so set up a pvr-queue request. This is it :- get_iplayer --pvr-queue --pid=b087vgd6 --subtitles-only --force It seems that the --force instruction overrides the --subtitles-only command. Reinstalling has made no difference. Are you creating .ts video files with GIP, or are they in some other format? My gip options are as follows: Options from Files radiomode = best subsmono = 1 subtitles = 1 tvmode = dvfsd,dvfxsd Options Used encodingconsolein = cp850 encodingconsoleout = cp850 encodinglocale = cp1252 encodinglocalefs = cp1252 As of around 2 weeks or so, I no longer get any subtitles. Today I selected a recently braodcast programme and downloaded it: Chasing the Moon: Series 1 - A Place Beyond the Sky (Part Two), BBC Four, m0006vrv During the download, two 0-length files appeared in my target folder: Chasing_the_Moon_Series_1_-_02._A_Place_Beyond_the_Sky_Part_Two_m0006vrv_original.audio.m4a Chasing_the_Moon_Series_1_-_02._A_Place_Beyond_the_Sky_Part_Two_m0006vrv_original.audio After the audio component download: the .m4a file was 44.3MB the .audio file disappeared 2 new files of zero length appeared: Chasing_the_Moon_Series_1_-_02._A_Place_Beyond_the_Sky_Part_Two_m0006vrv_original.video.m4v Chasing_the_Moon_Series_1_-_02._A_Place_Beyond_the_Sky_Part_Two_m0006vrv_original.video.txt After the video component download: All files previously named have disappeared Chasing_the_Moon_Series_1_-_02._A_Place_Beyond_the_Sky_Part_Two_m0006vrv_original.mp4 now exists (970MB), comprising video and audio In my GIP terminal window the following lines appear: INFO: Downloading tv: INFO: Downloaded: 46.49MB [audio] INFO: Downloaded: 969.23MB ... [video] INFO: Converting to MPEG-TS INFO: Converting to MP4 INFO: Tagging MP4 INFO: Downloading subtitles [original] Terminating on signal SIGINT(2) It looks to me as if the attempt to download subtitles has failed. I've never actually used subtitles, but there's no mention of --subsonly on the page I linked to. I assume it's been superseded by --subtitles-only. Actually the link at https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/subtitles#examples takes you straight to the Example section of that page. I did try doctor who series 10 episode yesterday and did not get it to work. perhaps later today i will try again. i had a rough night and need more sleep. hello I have been looking at past logs trying to figure that out. i am not deaf just like to use subtitles so my program viewing is private. Problems downloading subtitles
I am aware that the BBC have broken get_iplayer with the removal of the XML files. I am able to download files via the --pid= argument, however that only downloads the actual program. I have not yet found any way to get it to download the associated subtitles file, and I'm deaf and rely heavily on subtitles. I download the subtitles when available. I end up with 2 files programme.mp4 programme.srt which works with mplayer, etc.. I then use ffmpeg to combine the two into one MP4 file. Something like: ffmpeg -n -i programme.mp4 -f srt -i programme.srt \ -c:s mov_text -metadata:s:s:0 \ language=eng -c:v copy -c:a copy new.mp4 However is there an get_iplayer option to do this automatically? PVR and Subtitles
I am extremely happy with get I player .. well done to those who created and maintain it :-) Is there a way for delaying a specific programme for say like 3 days after it aired? For example Graham Norton uses live subtitles and the BBC corrects typos and stuff few hours/days later and uploads to BBC iplayer site. I wait for 3 days and type in get-iplayer --pvr subtitles synchronises beautifully How ever I forget to wait and have to search for pid and then down load subs only. You can remove the "|| $opt->{info}" conditions in the commit you
referenced if you want that. --info should short-circuit --get as well,
but it wasn't worth the bother. If you want to keep metadata from a
download, use --metadata.

Hello, I noticed that if a program is not in the TV cache, the subtitles won't download. My usual command for getting subtitles is: get_iplayer --modes=subtitles --subtitles-only --pid Using the --verbose switch however, I see that subs are actually available. Is there a workaround for this? Getting the video is fine whether or not a program is in the cache. For those who won't read the 2.84 release notes: I've scrapped the additional subtitle formats except for "compact", which I'm keeping as an option for anyone with hardware players that don't wrap subtitles. The "break" and "basic" formats were arguably worse than the default format, so not worth keeping. Everyone to whom I showed the changes preferred the current format, which no one had ever complained about anyway, afaik. It seemed pointless to have so many variations that no one was clamouring for. If the BBC should somehow see sense and revert to the old format, the door is open to bring back colours. As it is, the new format precludes even marking changes of speaker within subtitles, so best to keep things simple for and get out a release to restore subtitle capability for new programmes. What can I say? I got carried away. Bottom line: If your player won't wrap subtitles or the default display is too wide for your taste, use --subsfmt=compact. I've rebased my subtitles branch against 2.84 release. I'll leave it on GitHub for a couple of weeks if anyone wants to grab the code for their own use. But it will be very difficult to choose between subtitle options before you can see the results, and it strikes me that this would be much better if it was somehow available as a post-processing option that could be applied to existing TTML files from a previous download (as if from a --subsraw option). At present my options file has both `raw` and `subsraw` anyway, so I can modify the video/audio/subtitle content as I wish after the download. But while choosing a video mode (and corresponding implicit audio mode) is simple, a subtitle transformation depends more on what is available that what is desired. As a relevant aside, and in the spirit of Perl, it would be nice to be able to request a --thumbsize index of -1, i.e. the largest. The biggest thumbnail file I have is 150KB, which is tiny compared to the very smallest fifteen-minute audio-only radio file at just over 1MB. My options file currently has a `thumbsize` of 640, but it is highly unlikely that the maximum-available thumbnail size will remain at 640 pixels wide. I hadn't got to subtitles yet in gigi. Would an option that would insert --subtitles switch in get_iplayer call be useful? If so: If you use subtitles, do you _always_ want subtitles is available, or only occasionally. If the former, I simple checkbox option on a menu or option somewhere in preferences will do the trick. It would be heaven-perfect if GiP made sure that every subtitle does not exceed two lines, but I do realise this is too much to ask... So, a sterling patch it is then! The(re) may be other format variations lurking in iPlayer that I would never come across. If you check subtitles during playback and find big chunks of dialogue missing, first check the raw subtitles files before blaming get_iplayer. I have found several programmes with missing dialogue. In my limited experience with subtitles over the past 2 years, I would put the Beeb's subs under 2 categories: 1. The ones that at the early days of iPlayer were labeled as "prepared"; these are made by a third party dedicated service, are usually very accurate and in-sync with audio and always end with "Subtitles By Red Bee Media Ltd" 2. The ones that at the early days of iPlayer were labeled as "live"; these are machine-generated transcripts of the live (audio) TV feed. More often than not, they are of low quality, usually off-sync with the spoken audio and with missing dialogue - or may contain repeated subtitle lines - in general are beyond an easy repair and I avoid them altogether. Contrary to their "live" label, they are not limited to live shows - typical examples are Friday's pre-recorded Jools Holland's show (when subs do come with it) and most content on the BBC News Channel (namely "Click" and other shows there that I am exposed to via BBC World News Channel). The old subtitle To follow up from an off-list query: Demarcation of speaker changes won't be perfect, and I don't think it will work at all with the new subtitle format, meaning it won't work for any new programmes. I'm assuming that programmes already subtitled in the old format won't be re-subtitled in the new format, so I've kept the speaker change detection in get_iplayer, to use where possible. At the very least it's no worse than subtitles on the iPlayer site. Also: I found a few cases where extra blank lines were being written to the SRT file. Subtitles with AudioDescribed
I'm trying to download audiodescribed versions, plus the subtitle files. This is the command line entry to create the PVR setting: get_iplayer --pvr-add="demo1" --search="merlin" --version=audiodescribed --subtitles --get When I run the PVR, the subtitles setting is ignored. I get the video, but no SRT file. Presumably the BBC only associates the subtitles with the default version? A workaround would to have *two* download sessions, one for the audiodescribed video files and one for the SRT files of the default video version. But when I try to create a PVR setting file there's no entry in the PVR file. This GiP command... get_iplayer --pvr-add="demo2" --search="merlin" --subtitles-only --get ...produces this PVR file: search0 merlin A workaround of the workaround is to have a DOS BAT file for the subtitles like this: --get_iplayer --search="merlin" --subtitles-only --get ... and it works, but it seems a rather clunky method. Plus it also gets the subtitles for any searched-for programmes which exist as non-audiodescribed as well as described ones. So, 1) Can GiP be made to interpret instructions so that when it finds a --subtitles tag *and* a --version=audiodescribed tag, it gets the subtitles from any *other* version which has them? 2) Can the --subtitles-only tag be made available as a PVR setting? If you only use invariant substitution parameters (, , etc.) in your file name format, get_iplayer won't create duplicates or overwrite previous downloads, as long as you're writing to the same directory. When I run this: get_iplayer --type tv --subtitles-only --terse --search .* --file-prefix=" - - " ...GiP doesn't just list what subtitles are available, it downloads the srt files. And if I run it again, it downloads them again. If I run it on different days, I get identical srt files with different datestamps in the filenames. If I do that with only --file-prefix=" - ", it overwrites the previous downloads without asking. Is there a way to prevent all of these happening? Or am I missing something incredibly obvious? I created another folder and called it get_iplayer recordings and had no problem playing mp4 files. So now that problem is solved which created another... well not quite as I find the names of files horrible. Rather than make get_iplayer produce avi's, I'd suggest that you explore why xbmc doesn't play mp4s for you first, given that it does elsewhere. I have been happy with get-iplayer for ages now and only use it to download when I have stupid subtitle delay. As I am deaf and rely on subtitles , take a look on BBC iplayer website and watch BBC Click when playing click on small S next to volume and wait a few minutes . You normally find previous programme subtitle usually the weather before BBC Click and at one point it there was a delay of 5 minutes. Go on try it and see how frustrating it is! As you know being a license payer its unacceptable and yes I have complained a number of times only to get a response “we will look into it” etc. I am well aware of --suboffset only problem is not knowing how much of a delay until I play it and then re download subtitles with a different delay time. So let me tell you what my set up at home and then hopefully you give me an idea/solution to a problem that I have. I have a xbmc and mythtv set up at home majority of my recordings is done via mythtv, I do up to 4 recording of a same program. For example Top Gear I’d be happy watching it every week and say from 4th episode onwards it start to use live subtitles even though it’s not a live show so there is a subtitle delay . I then watch a repeat it could be a 2nd 3rd or 4th showing and subtitles usually be perfect timing with correct spelling BBC tells us due time constraints not all programmes make it in time for subtitlers so they use live subtitles. As you may aware that live subtitles they use automatic computer speech recognition and they are not perfect. So my guess is subtitlers use automatic computer speech recognition and they correct it with timing and spellings before it gets 2nd 3rd or 4th showing. So as you can see why I have mythtv to re-record if 1st showing uses live subtitles ,BBC click always uses live subtitles even its repeated so many so i never record it. If live subtitles still being used despite number rerecording then this is where get_iplayer subtitles comes to play and I adjust the timing myself. I map my keys to remote control and once I start xbmc and Top Gear starts I adjust the timing while its playing , i can speed up or slow it down at the touch of a button on remote control rather than having to re-download subtitles and guessing the sub offset time. I have just found this feature very usefull, "get_iplayer --pid b011ddzy --force --subtitles-only --subsraw --output=c:\BBC_iPlayer\" as sometimes when the program is broadcast, subtitles are not available until later on. Need more info. What is the PID of the show? What does get_iplayer say when you run `get_iplayer -g --pid b00fvcq0 --subtitles`? Why didn't you attach the output from get_iplayer? If so, I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong. The program I am streaming has subtitles1 (from --info) I am using the --subtitles override, using mplayer. Cursor over mplayer output,'v' toggles visibility on and off but no subtitles.
