Thanks for the reply. I am certain now that I did download '18' as a snap from the software center. Still curious why that version does not appear when I search the software center. I remember having to set permissions before Gimp would work properly. I do use darktable extensively, as it is among my favorite RAW editors. On the Windows side, I use Capture One, also, IMHO, very good. I got rid of PSCC in favor of Gimp on both sides. I have experienced no problem with GIMP in conjunction with darktable, but have not tried to use any extra compiled plug-ins. I am an avid photographer (film and digital), and consider myself a fairly advanced user of photo-editing software, but I am certain there is much more that I could do by learning even more. [Gimp-user] Gimp version
When I check the 'about' menu item, I see that I am running Gimp 2.10.18. When I check Ubuntu's software area, it lists Gimp 2.10.8-2. I assume that is an old version, but wonder why it would be there instead of 2.10.18. . . . and, if I have 2.10.18 on my machine, I'm wondering how it got there, as I only install Gimp from the Ubuntu software area. Maybe this is a question for the Ubuntu forum, but I am checking here in hopes that someone can inform me. Thanks. Curious why you find the software center "awful", but I appreciate the information provided in your post. Will work through it today to see what it delivers for my system. I don't think I did anything special to get GIMP 10.10.10, nor can I comment on whether enabling PPA sources influences what one sees in the software center (I have never personally noticed such). [Gimp-user] Gimp Plugins
Thanks for the response. I am running Ubuntu 19.04 64 bit. GIMP is version 10.10.10. When I navigate to ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins and run 'ls', there are no files that show up. In GIMP, if I follow the Filters dropdown menu to Python or Script-fu, there is little there other than Console/Console-Refresh Scripts-Start Server. I would like to install GimpLensFun, G'Mic (which I understand is a plugin), and explore some of the other offerings. I do not find any GIMP plugins available in the Ubuntu software center, and, as you seem to indicate, my online search returned plugins that I guess are for the Windows version of GIMP. GIMP 10.10 "flogged my eyes" such that I took serious notice of darktable which, in the first 10.10 GIMP that I installed was called as the RAW converter whenever I clicked on a RAW file to open it in GIMP. I am very happy to have become acquainted with darktable, but have not spent much time in GIMP lately. I don't ask you to do all the work for me, just point me in the right direction. When you say that plugins in the ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins folder have to be set to executable, I understand what you mean, but have never set anything to executable, so have no idea what I would be looking for or how to "flip the switch." I apologize for not giving you a better description of my setup in my original post, but would appreciate if, given what I have described here, you could provide a few more clues. Thanks. I maintain my subscription, and I dug in to actually learn how to use LR (which raised my tolerance to actually give DT an honest try), but the open source aspect of GIMP, and now, darktable (which, for me is far superior to LR in actually manipulating images) has always appealed to me. Additionally, Linux has always seemed to just run with less fuss than Windows. Back to that cloning feature, it's very useful, but, otherwise, I find the GIMP implementation of cloning to be the cat's meow. Perspective cloning, IMO, is just so intuitive and useful, straight forward and easy to use. I love it. OK, I shall descend from my soapbox, now. I have always thought Gimp's implementation of the cloning tool (especially its perspective cloning) was better than anything else out there. Working in 2.10 this evening reinforces my opinion. The only thing that I would wish for is PS's anticipatory view such that, when trying to align during cloning (say a row of barbed wire), you see where your destination pixels will fall before you commit to the clone. Absent that very nice feature, I would wish for a way to undo a destination click such that the source remains in place so that you could click several times by trial and error to fine tune position of the source pixels. This is an issue with which my concerns are mild. The clone tool as is does a wonderful job. Ubuntu must have pushed 2.10 out to me in an upgrade, as I had been running a 2.9x version. It was a pleasant surprise to open Gimp and find 2.10 installed. Seems to run nicely on my Ubuntu 18.04 setup. Thanks and congrats to the developers. Like most of us, I have lived with 8 bit for a long time. This photo is from a collection of work-related images, nothing precious. When I updated my Ubuntu to 17.10, I re-installed Gimp, this time version 2.9.7. It came with Darktable as a plug-in to open RAW photos. I find 2.9.7 a delight, and have successfully processed some important (to me) photos using that application. Generally, I have only used Darktable as a plug-in, opening the RAW file and exporting immediately to GIMP. I never paid attention to what bit rate was being used. The only difference in my workflow with regard to the referenced photo was that I used it (and others in that set) to acquaint myself more thoroughly with Darktable. Most of the processing was performed using Darktable, Gimp serving only as a route by which I could export the Darktable file and convert to TIFF. I will follow your advice and post at pixls for more advice. Thanks, again. When editing these photos, my laptop display showed them as normal photo files. However, when I Exorted them as .tiff, the results are inconsistent. [Gimp-user] Paint Brush Color
I use Gimp in my photography. Until now, that's all I have used it for. Today, I came across a text document in pdf format, and it is probably protected in some way such that my pdf reader cannot highlight anything. Since it is important that I highlight this document in order to make use of it, I figured I would open it in Gimp, export as tiff, at which point, I should be able to open the tiff file and paint with a semi-transparent brush to highlight sections of text as necessary. Unfortunately, search though I may, I cannot find in Gimp where one selects or changes the brush color. I've searched online, and most subjects that come up have to do with how to make brushes. I don't need to design a brush. I just want to bring up a palette that will allow me to paint over the drawing with a red brush, or yellow, etc. I even opened one of my color photos thinking that there might be a problem with the tiff that I had created, but I cannot find any dialog box that deals with the brush color attribute. I'm certain the answer is before my eyes, but they are not finding it for me. Advice would be most welcome. Being able to open them in Gimp without converting to 8-bits just feels so much better. One issue that stumps me: re precision, should I use linear or gammp, 15, 32, or 64 bits? [Gimp-user] Problem with ufraw and Sony ARW raw files
I run IDC using the Crossover front end of wine, and have also run IDC directly in wine in the past. It works perfectly in either setup. I have also installed Irfanview which I prefer to use in previewing my ARW images. Often, I use Irfanview to batch convert ARW's to Tiff, then open directly in Gimp. I know I sacrifice some degree of precision in this, but most of the shots I process this way are simple snaps in familiar surroundings and, in my view, do not require the added precision that opening and processing in IDC might offer. IDC operating from Wine is no faster, but no slower in response than it is in Windows. My understanding is that IDC offers to the RAW shooter those processing advantages that the in-body processing can offer the JPEG shooter. Since I never use the JPEG file format except when uploading to the web, in practice, I rarely find an image that significantly benefits from processing through IDC. I have not experienced the problem you describe with UFRAW, so can offer you no assistance there. Sorry to hear that you are having a problem. IDC via Wine would definitely be a workaround worth trying, I believe. Good luck. Caruso OS:Xubuntu 12.10 Gimp: 2.8.2 UFRaw: 0.18 I just purchased a new Sony Alpha 77 camera and am having problems with UFRaw and the conversion of the alpha raw (.arw) files. I can use UFRaw to open my older Minolta .mrw raw files and they look fine. However, all of the .arw files display extremely dark and with almost no color other than a redish sepia tone. This is the result that is also passed into Gimp. Something else that I notice: Any attempt to manually adjust the white balance results in a warning message: Image: ChannelMultipliers: Value 0.000 to small to truncate to 0.100. Selecting Auto WB results in something close to a BW image. These .arw files open properly in the Sony converter (on Windows) and also appear to display properly in the Shotwell viewer. Have other people using Alpha cameras seen this problem and is there a known solution? Thanks. I have Yppa installed, but, for some reason, could not accomplish the task. I am now rolled back successfully to version 2.8.8. Have tried re-installing 2.9, but keep getting the same message. What might I be doing wrong? Thanks again. [Gimp-user] resynthesizer plug-in error

[Gimp-user] small green rectangle in each image
When I open an image (8-bit tiff converted by gimp from 16-bit), there is a small green triangle in the upper left corner. Happens with each image that I open. If I use another viewer to view the 16-bit image, it appears without this rectangle. What could be causing this? I can clone out the rectangle, but something must be causing it. Have uninstalled/re-installed several times with not change in this behavior. Thanks for any advice. [Gimp-user] FYI: Gimp 2.9.1 - Git version - Ubuntu packages for Raring and Saucy are available
Thorsten: I was able to install on my 13.0 Ubuntu, and it worked great for a couple of hours, was quite snappy, too! However, shortly thereafter, Gimp began refusing to open newly created 16 bit tiff files (see my post earlier re: Gimp 2.9.1 Plug-in crashed: file-tiff-load Are you able to offer any clues behind this error message? Why would it have worked for a while, then stop working, and why do those files with which I had success continue to open, but new files not? Curious. Great work though, thanks. Loved it while I had it. Caruso Hi, folks, Success! FYI: If you need to install a Gimp developer snapshot - just call it Gimp 2.9.1 - on Ubuntu Raring and Saucy try this: https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/gimp-experimental/ But consider it's experimental. Use it on your own risk! PS: I could not made packages for Precise and Quantal because of a dependency issue: Gimp 2.9 needs at least Glib 2.36. I will try to build a standalone version for older Ubuntus which will carry it's own packages. [Gimp-user] Gimp 2.9.1 Plug-in crashed: file-tiff-load
Hopefully, it is permissible to post on this problem here. I downloaded/installed the PPA for Gimp 2.9.1. It worked great for the first half dozen 16-bit tiffs. I use a few RAW converters to create these tiff tiles, RawTherapee, UFRAW, and the Sony software supplied with my A700 DSLR, Image Data Converter running through Wine. At any rate, most of the tiffs I create now cause Gimp to crash when opening new files. I get this message: Plug-in crashed: file-tiff-load and Opening '/home/caruso/Desktop/PHOTOS from IDC/DSC06219.tif' failed: Files created previously continue to open as normal. What could be the problem. I was so thrilled to have succeeded in installing 2.9.1 on my system, but now may have to uninstall it and fall back to 2.8.x. I realize that 2.9.1 is experimental and unstable, but would like to know if this is something simple that can be fixed. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. [Gimp-user] Adding Plugin frustration
Just ran the command. What do I do next? Where should I look in Gimp for this plugin if it is installed and working properly? After running the command you show below, how do I take advantage of the plugin registry? Thanks to everyone for the replies. I had all of this down pat several years ago, but my remembery seems void of the know-how these days. Caruso Also, have you tried sudo apt-get install gimp-plugin-registry? This is a meta-package, available in Ubuntu's Graphics (universe) repository. Has lots of good stuff including the resynthesizer, automagically installed ready to use. :o) Steve -- Carusoswi (via www.gimpusers.com/forums) ___ gimp-user-list mailing list gimp-user-list@gnome.org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list
