Re: Announcement: this mailing list will be retired by the end of Oct 2022

2022-10-26 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

I’ve received several questions during the past days which possibly makes
sense to summarize in a single topic [1] which I can then reference.
Hopefully this specific post will help anyone looking for the same set of
answers as well. If any additional common question arises I’ll make sure to
add it to this same topic in Discourse.

Thanks and please let us know if you have any questions around Discourse or
your onboarding process!

Announcement: this mailing list will be retired by the end of Oct 2022

2022-10-20 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

As we have been communicating during the past few months GNOME's Mailman
platform is being decommissioned (python2 deprecation, major burden in
managing lists spam). The deadline is currently set to the end of October
2022. Mailing list subscribers are invited to migrate to GNOME's Discourse
instance [1]. Neil made sure [2] to create a set of tags you can re-use to
initiate a new topic in the new platform, if a tag is missing please reach
out to me directly.

Jehan (from the GIMP Team) kindly provided some instructions you can follow
[3] in order to safely migrate your reading workflow to Discourse. The new
platform supports several login methods including your GNOME Account and
other major OpenID providers.

After the deadline of the end of October Mailman archives will remain alive
in read only mode for posterity. If the mailing list was used behind an
alias, please let me know so we can re-do the same setup but on Discourse
instead.

Thanks,

P.S All the l10n lists are still pending code changes in damned-lies, the
deadline to decommission those lists may slip by a week or two depending
how soon those changes will be made available in DL codebase

That was related as it was preventing the post receive hook to run
properly. It was fixed this morning, if any of you could send in a commit
and confirm it'd be lovely.

Re: Evolution stats in DL are not updated

2020-05-01 Thread Andrea Veri
Claude,

Your statements are pretty unfair I have to be honest. The current issue is
that glusterfs doesn't seem to perform well when trying to cope with big
repositories such as gtk or gimp. The solution there is mainly moving this
data out of it into the brand new Ceph cluster we deployed and blogged
about [1] recently.

Openshift is a platform that we introduced for the community and used /
loved by multiple contributors as of today. It introduced, as every new
technology, a learning curve that has to be filled before the actual
features can become of good use. Saying I want to go back to a plain VM is
the old please give me back a bare metal because I want all the
performances for myself when the world transitioned off to virtual machines
ages ago. It doesn't scale, adds maintenance burdens, and it's definitely
unnecessary.

The GNOME Infrastructure Team has made sure l10n runs beautifully with the
new platform with a service degradation that only happened during the
datacenter migration we recently performed and fixed right afterwards. On
top of that we made sure the entire VM to container migration was performed
in its *entirety* by us, we offered our help to let you understand how the
platform works to get you up to speed with little to no interest from your
side. We keep mentioning on IRC and other mediums we're around to offer our
knowledge in order to fullfil your needs when it comes to maintaining this
service properly.

That said, we'll look into moving that volume into Ceph late next week.

Hi,

we'll be performing a migration of GNOME's Translations service from a
standalone virtual machine into Openshift (OSCP). The service will be
offline until we perform the migration to avoid new data to be
inserted on the old site while we finalize the setup of the OSCP
project.

The following services will be affected:

l10n.gnome.org

As usual please keep an eye at [1].

Thanks!

Re: Migrate to gitlab.gnome.org?

2018-05-18 Thread Andrea Veri
Looks to me you're invoking ssh via sudo (to root) which attempts to load
your SSH keys from root's home directory instead of yours and that fails.
Can you please try using your username instead and invoke ssh from there?
Additionally if you have multiple SSH keys you might want to tweak your
.ssh/config file accordingly.

GNOME will fully transition to GitLab in June, until then some of the
projects are still living within git.gnome.org while certain others
have migrated to GitLab already. Please make sure the project you are
trying to clone is listed at [1], if it's not there it means it hasn't

If anyone else is experiencing this issue please let us know by mailing

The background:

some mailing lists did have their listinfo.html [1] page modified with a

applied globally on the default template file to be reflected everywhere.

Subject: Getting invalid captcha on subscribe in mail list
To: gnome-infrastruct...@gnome.org

Hi there,

I'm currently the admin of 'gnome-pt_br-list' mail list [1]. Users
reported to me that they can't subscribe to the aforementioned mail
list, receiving invalid captcha message.

I notice that the reCaptcha form, introduced in may 2014 I presume
[2], is being displayed in a lot of mail-lists, but a lot of
translation teams' mail list (maybe all?) doesn't have captcha.
Probably a problem for them as well.

Can someone please take a look at this issue?

Thanks in advance!

www.gnome.org's translations

2014-03-28 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

after a deeper investigation it appears the WPPO plugin that we were
using to provide translations on the www.gnome.org's website is not
behaving / working correctly.

That said we've temporarily disabled the plugin on the website to not
show up broken or half-done translations. I'd suggest to stop
submitting translations for the www.gnome.org website until we sort
out what's going on (the fact the original maintainer of the plugin
is no longer active makes everything more difficult) on that side.

We'll keep you updated as soon as things will eventually move forward
on this side.

Thanks for your understanding,

When I removed English from language list of Chromium, it appears in
 Portuguese.
Basically, if English is listed in my language list (which was as *lowest*
priority, after Portuguese and Portuguese (Brazil) ), GNOME websites appear
in English, while IMHO it should behave just as a fallback.

I'm very surprised after a few tests I just ran:

1. every single language works fine when configured as the first
preference on your browser. You can test this by selecting 'af',
which stands on the latest spots on the LanguagePriority list. You
will see [1] showing up half translated. (I suppose some of the
translations are still missing for that specific locale)
2. pt_BR is the only affected locale that does not show up properly
even when selected as the very first locale on your browser.
3. curl shows success but chrome and firefox are not working as
   expected:

curl -iI -H 'Accept-Language: pt_BR,en_GB;q=0.7,en;q=0.6' https://help.gnome.org

httpd.conf has:

AddLanguage pt-br .pt_BR
AddLanguage pt_BR .pt_BR

I tried adding:

AddLanguage pt_br .pt_BR

but it didn't help. Rafael can you test the above as well?
specifically check that:

1. the only broken language not showing up is pt_BR
2. selecting other languages != from pt_BR works, for example
try with 'af' or 'sq' which are the latest entries on
LanguagePriority as you can see from this excerpt:

LanguagePriority en ca cs da de el eo es et fr he hr hu it ja ko ltz nl nn no
pl pt pt_br pt_BR ru sv tr zh-CN zh-TW uk eu af sq be@latn

3. test the above with curl
4. test the above with both chrome and firefox

Thanks!

Changes on translators account requests

2014-03-22 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

as many of you might be aware of the damned-lies service
(l10n.gnome.org) is currently capable of submitting translations
directly to git.gnome.org from its web interface. [1] (the ability is
given to the 'Committer' group members of a specific language team)

I would like to thank Claude for his hard work on this and also point
out how great this new feature is: submitting translations has never
been easier, no more Git knowledge is needed, no need for an additional
account on GNOME's LDAP, translating GNOME is now a straightforward
action even for newcomers.

Given having a Git account is no longer a requisite for becoming a
translator, the GNOME Accounts Team will not accept translator account
requests anymore from today.

The form [2] has been updated to reflect this and I'll be also
adjusting the relevant wiki page removing the references to translator accounts.

That said, we won't touch any existing account that was created before
today, the only limitation these accounts will get is the global
2-years-inactivity-will-result-in-your-account-being-removed-from-the-gnomecvs-group

rule we'll be launching the next week. (another announce will follow
for this, keep an eye on the infrastructure-announce list)

As a side note, if you are currently owning a GNOME git account and
you don't plan to use it anymore for submitting translations please
get in touch with the GNOME Accounts Team at accounts AT gnome DOT org for
having it disabled. This way you will be helping the GNOME Sysadmin
Team increasing server's security :-)

Thanks a lot for your attention and have an awesome weekend!

2013-12-16 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

the migration went just fine and we just had a very little downtime (maybe
less than 1-2 minutes while switching the IPs from the old machines to the
new ones), please let the Sysadmin Team [1] know if any breakage pops up in
the upcoming hours especially on l10n.gnome.org's side. (i.e missing
dependencies, wrong permissions etc.)

I would like to send a special thank you to LaMont Jones, the Canonical
Sysadmin that helped the GNOME Sysadmin Team finding and racking the new
machines in place, his passion and valuable work have made this possible. I
would also like to thank Canonical for kindly sponsoring some of the
servers that make hosting the GNOME Project possible.

Re: Planned MAINTENANCE on l10n.gnome.org: Tuesday, 16th July, 08:00 - 13:00 UTC

2013-07-18 Thread Andrea Veri
I was reported some issues earlier today and as far as I can tell all of
them seems to be fixed by now. You may encounter some error messages saying
that itstool is missing on the server, please let me know about them so I
can generate the relevant stats manually.

Thanks for your patience,

Andrea

The service should be back in production. Sorry for the delay on the
maintenance but the backups took longer than we expected to restore on the
new machine. Please report any issue you may find on l10.gnome.org :-)

 cheers,

 Andrea

The re-install will take a bit longer than we originally thought given
the huge amount of files we had to backup before moving.

Keep an eye at https://status.gnome.org which is updated as soon as
 things move forward.

 Hi,

we'll be performing a fresh reinstall of the machine that is currently
hosting l10n.gnome.org. The sysadmin will be in place at around 8 AM
and will perform the reinstall till 11 AM. After that we'll keep two more
hours of downtime for setting up all the services that were previously
 hosted there.

 The services affected:

 1. l10n.gnome.org
 2. ns-slave.gnome.org (our secondary DNS server)

As usual keep an eye at https://status.gnome.org for further updates.

 Hi Andrea,

Still there are problems with diff pages. You can see an example here:

 https://l10n.gnome.org/vertimus/gnome-web-www/master/dynamic/es

The diff page between the original PO file and the sent by the translator
is not working. Also, the statistics of the sent file say 0/0/0.

 Could you please review it?

Hey,

unfortunately there's not much I can do about that, some of the files
weren't uploaded correctly (the server does not have them on the upload
directory) thus they aren't showing up as expected. I would suggest to
upload the files again in the case something like you described appears on
your lang's page. Everything will then work as expected and the diff will
be properly generated.

Re: What's wrong with this git?

2013-07-07 Thread Andrea Veri
Don't worry about that at all, one of the hooks is currently failing to
connect cause one machine being down, as soon as the machine will be up
again, it'll be fixed on its own. And no it won't affect pushes or any
other git activity.

2013/7/7 Andika Triwidada and...@gmail.com

Lately, everytime I push translation update, I got something like this:
 $ git push
 Counting objects: 7, done.
Delta compression using up to 2 threads.
 Compressing objects: 100% (4/4), done.
 Writing objects: 100% (4/4), 17.36 KiB | 0 bytes/s, done.
 Total 4 (delta 3), reused 0 (delta 0)
remote: Can't connect to server: No route to host -
 To ssh://git.gnome.org/git/glade
6d6bfce..15f08f0 HEAD - master

But I didn't see any further problem. Data pushed succesfully. Should
I worry to see that message?

 Regards,
 Andika

 Hi,

the SSSD daemons (the one responsible for getting all the relevant
details from LDAP and setting up user/groups accordingly on all the GNOME
machines) were restarted due to some changes on their configuration files.

SSSD has an internal cache and right after the restart some user/groups
entries were purged and the real problem popped up. For some reason the
client isn't able to query the groups field on our LDAP server correctly,
 and that's blocking git pushes.

I'll keep debugging what's going on and keep you informed as soon as
 everything is back to normality.

 Thanks for your patience,

Is there any residual problem? My updates to git hasn't reflected/sync'ed
 into Damned Lies.

 For instance,
 https://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/commit/?h=glib-2-36id=599030ac0508433407b5bedf447748dca0c9f02f

Damned lies expected downtime

2012-07-04 Thread Andrea Veri
Hi,

as you may know one of our services got hacked recently [1], thus I'm
taking some time to upgrade all the Ubuntu hosts to the latest LTS
release. Damned lies will have a few minutes of downtime today so that
I can perform the upgrade.

Thanks for your patience.
