Australian English Translation Team contacts

Hi everyone.

I joined the Australian English Team a couple of months back and have tried,
unsuccessfully, to contact Peter Lawler the co-ordinator. Each time I get an
unknown recipient returned email basically saying the
six-by-nine.com.auemail used by Peter does not exist.

Is there anyone apart from me and Peter on this team. I would like to start
looking around and working through translation and don't want to step on any
toes.

suggested by Johannes Schmid in this

that the team coordinator is changed from Peter Lawler to myself if Peter
continues to be "out of reach". Please note that I have added the 2 email

Is it possible to copy en-GB translations to en-AU to make the starting point for en-AU easier?

Good morning everyone.

I was wondering if it is possible to directly copy the en-GB translations
over to en-AU (because en-AU is much closer to en-GB than it is to en-US or
any other en-dialect). This would make the starting point for en-AU easier
as after this only small changes would need to be made. I have tried to
contact Bastien from en-GB (via his personal email address listed on his
website), about the python script, a few times but as yet have had no
response from him so I am thinking this is a viable alternative method to
accelerating the en-AU translation.

Any help is greatly appreciated :-)

Hi Philip

I know what the script is supposed to do but I can't get it to do anything,
that is why I tried contacting Bastien to see if he could give me some
guidance on it. I'm happy to help update the script if/when I find anything
but I need it to work for me before I can go any further with it. The script
would be my preferred method but if it wont work for me I'll resort to
copying over if need be.

If you, or anyone else from en-GB, feels like giving me a step by step on
using the script I (and all other Aussies who will get Gnome in Australian
English) will be eternally thankful :-))

P.S. I've also just got a new laptop which I haven't tried in on yet because
I have just finished removing Windows 7 and installing Debian
Sid/Experimental so the issue may have been my old laptop was just to old
and tired to do anything strenuous.

Mario, Sorry I have only just seen your reply. Will look into this method
tomorrow if I fail to get the script to work. Thanks for your input.

Philip, I have got the script again (I notice you have added your previous
post to the script) and I still cannot get it to work, I am getting a
message "en_GB.pl: command not found". I am going to re-install perl and see
if that helps things.  At least this time I am getting an error message.

Hi Johannes.

Thanks for your tip. I have reinstalled Perl and it is now working for me by
cd-ing into my Gnome folder and running "perl en_GB.pl input.pot >
output.pot". I think I will leave it like that as I can then run it on any
machine from a flash drive.

Right; it's clearly far better for you guys to commit directly, and
have some regular cross synchronisation.

I uses GNOME in esperanto. I don't know sincerely how many people are
translating it but I think that an easier participation and an easier way to
talk about translation models means a quick translation of all applications.
GNOME in esperanto (but not only) is much less translated than softwares in
Launchpad. So I think that it could be more efficient a translation with
server-side software like Launchpad, Pootle or other

I can offer as the maintainer of one of the proposed GNOME
Applications that is hosted on Launchpad (deja-dup) to be a guinea pig
for that leg of the work.

You mentioned that this approach would be no additional work for
translators in GNOME.  I can add that it would also be no additional
work for Launchpad maintainers because they already work with
translation branches that they merge before a release.  So from that
perspective, I like this idea too.

GIMP 2.8 release approaching

Hi translators,

the GIMP 2.8 release is approaching. We are still working on open
bugs and maybe some strings will change or be added, but there
will not be any more larger string changes. Now is the time to
start updating your language's PO files in GIMP master if your
haven't already started. We will announce the strict string freeze
here too.

Please note that the gimp source tree has multiple message catalogs.
They are located in the po, po-libgimp, po-plug-ins, po-python,
po-script-fu, po-tags and po-tips directories.

Please let us know if you find any errors in the english strings
and we will fix them.

Thanks a lot everybody for providing that many translations for GIMP! :)

You are right, generating a new template results in 62 strings.

There seems to be a bug in intltool-update --pot that only
extracts strings which immediately follow a '(', so

(_"foo"  ends up in the template

but

_"foo"  doesn't.

At least that's the pattern I found when looking at the pot file
and the scheme source files.

To the folks on gnome-i18n@gnome.org: did you ever hear of this
issue? Can you investigate it? I'm sure there are more i18n experts
on gnome-i18n@gnome.org than on gimp-developer-list ;)

Well, that (_"foo") is broken, it's an illegal function call, so that
can't be what we should put there :(

Ah that's true, apologies for that and thanks for the heads-up. I've
reverted the change on gnome-3-8.

I would like to request a freeze break so we can keep the fix for 3.10.
The issue is that the scores dialog in Mahjongg displays separate scores
for different map layouts with a combo box to select the layout, but the
label for the combo box is "Size".  It should be "Layout".  Does not
affect documentation.

I already erroneously committed this change.  I've left it be for now
since it's unfortunately already part of a larger Italian update.

Ido is a constructed language (much like Esperanto) but originated
from a reform attempt of Esperanto.

I added it to gnome-apps, but not yet to meta-gnome-apps-tested, which I
think is where it needs to go to show up in the official releases.

String change in Epiphany

Hi,

I fixed a couple places in Epiphany where we were using HTTP URLs for
DuckDuckGo instead of HTTPS URLs. These URLs are marked for translation
so that you can add a region key if you choose, so you should update
your translations to match the new URL (just add the s in https).

Timer labels in GNOME Games

Hi translators,

Is anyone translating the timer labels in GNOME Games? I'm asking about
the labels on the clocks in Chess, Tetravex, Mines, Hitori, and
Mahjongg. These horrible things:

/* Translators: sorry. This is the clock label when the game
has exceeded
 * one hour in length. The first %02d is hours, the middle %
02d is minutes,
 * and the last is seconds. In between are ratio characters
and LTR order
 * marks, so that nothing gets reversed in RTL languages.
You probably do not

clock_label.set_text (_("%02d\xE2\x88\xB6\xE2\x80\x8E%02d
\xE2\x88\xB6\xE2\x80\x8E%02d").printf (hours, minutes, seconds));

I've spelled out each hex character explicitly in the source code, but I
didn't realize that doesn't happen in the po files. You just see this:

msgid "%02d∶‎%02d∶‎%02d"

If the string of hex was not really conducive to translation accuracy,
the invisible LTR mark seems like a landmine to anyone not copying the
string unchanged. And worse, vim chokes on the LTR mark and displays the
string like this instead:

msgid "%02d∶<200e>%02d∶<200e>%02d"

That bogus string wound up in at least the French translation for
several games (through no fault of the translator), breaking the timer
label.

The upshot is that your translation might be broken too. I figure the
easiest way around this is to just not mark the string for translation,
so that's what I'd like to do. If anyone needs these to remain
translatable, please speak up!

P.S. The purpose of the LTR mark is to prevent the ratio character from
causing the numbers to flip around in RTL locales. It has no effect in
LTR locales.

Hi all,

by all means go ahead and add the GIMP master stats. That "policy" to
not have master stats is from a time when we were redoing the entire
UI, and things changed massively. These days, most strings don't change
(of course we make no guarantee about strings in master, but most of
them are unchanged for years).

Just treat GIMP as all other projects, no special handling needed any
longer, except our 5 translation domains ;)

Once the proposed translation has the "reviewed" or "ready for commit" 
status, you'll see a new dropdown action "submit to repository" which 
will do the commit for you.

Ok, the Vertimus workflow says the "Inform of submission is always 
available for committers". It is listed in my submission box and I used 
it today. I then received emails, as the coordinator, telling me the 
file is ready for committing. because that is what I have written in the 
comment box Considering that is now done how do I commit the 
translation. I am doing my own reviewing, as I am translating, because 
the team isn't all that active and I just want to get this done so 
future translations aren't a heavy workload (doing 3 separate releases etc.)

I'd just like to reinforce some of what Arash has said. I find Gnome's 
translation tool difficult and even though I am the coordinator of en_AU 
I have never been able to commit anything I have done. This leaves 
people frustrated and they go onto other projects. MATE and XFCE, along 
with thousands of other FLOSS projects (such as Pidgin, Kodi, etc etc 
etc) use Transifex. I don't see a need for anyone to reinvent the wheel 
(like Mozilla is doing) when a simple and easy to use tool is available 
already.

comparison to other translations tools, I think a lot of effort is wasted
on learning and working with repositories, reviewing, making the

see if gnome infrastructure can also use Pontoon.

I can also offer my help on developing a new tool for Gnome, but I'm a

dropdown for Action only has the options Reserve for Translation, Write 
a comment, Inform of Submission, and Archive the Actions. So my next 
question is how do I review my files when there is no option presented 
to me to do it?

needed. Probably you just didn't figure out how to do it. Basically, 
you're looking for the "Submit to repository" option, which will send 
the PO file to the repositories and will archive the translation status.

Start by choosing "Reserve for Translation" and click "Submit".
