I'll take a wager of one pint (beer or ice cream) that this does not
in fact get fixed the right way by the next GUADEC. Sorry, but
experience shows that half-assed fixes stay in the codebase forever
because fixing it the right way becomes a much lower priority once the
half-assed fix is in place...

hard code freeze break request for eog

2008-09-19 Thread Claudio Saavedra
Hi,

There's a bug in the Eye of GNOME since the gio migration that won't
allow a user to set an image as the background wallpaper[1]. Even worse,
a user setting the wallpaper will get an ugly plain color as
background...

We have a patch to fix that[2], but unfortunately we didn't manage to
review this in time before code freeze. Even worse, there are two
strings that need to be added in order to fully fix this:

- Only local images can be used as wallpapers
- To be able to set this image as your wallpaper, please save it
locally in your computer

These strings will only be shown when a user tries to set as wallpaper
an image that is not locally in the computer, but the patch is required
also for local images.

The Eye of GNOME team, therefore, requests to break all possible
freezes, and in return, we compromise to:

1. Translate these strings to es, de, and pt_BR ourselves.
2. Get a really kicking ass image viewer for the next releases,
3. Buy Vincent some icecream in next guadec

Why not just copy it for them automatically? Isn't there a standard

Copying would indeed be the best solution, but it would require proper
user feedback during the process. This would make the patch more complex
and is something I would prefer to do in the next cycle.

Still, it would be nice to get some feedback regarding a default
background directory. This could make things easier. :-)

Freeze break request: string change in gnome-control-center

2008-08-19 Thread Federico Mena Quintero
Hi,

We have this little bug:

Here, the Display capplet says Mirror Screens in a checkbox, but it
says Cloned Output in the widget to control the monitor positions.
Vincent suggested that we make the second string more consistent with
the first one, and then we can reduce the nerdy terminology as well.

I want to commit the attached patch, which simply changes Cloned

reusing the translations we already have for Mirror Screens, and it
works well in English (or semi-well; Mirrored Screens may be better in

I'm not sure how well it works in other languages. At least es.po has a
suboptimal translation, as Espejar pantallas has a made-up word.
(Pantallas espejo or even Pantallas en espejo would be better.)

Thoughts? :)

I want to commit the attached patch, which simply changes Cloned
Output for the same Mirror Screens. This would have the effect of
reusing the translations we already have for Mirror Screens, and it
works well in English (or semi-well; Mirrored Screens may be better in
 the canvas).

I think Mirrored is much worse than Cloned.
Mirroring usually involved flipping left and right, which is not happening here.

Totem string freeze break request

2008-02-29 Thread Philip Withnall
Hi,

After talking to Bastien about the (now reverted) accidental freeze
break in revision 5187, we've decided to ask for a proper freeze break
for it.

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=454642

We're requesting addition of one string (Time seek bar) to add an
accessibility label to the seek bar --- an important part of Totem.

The same label used to be in Totem before we switched to GtkBuilder, but
was lost when converting the glade files; there's the possibility that
some of the .po files still have commented-out translations of the
string, if that helps. (From a quick grep, maybe 20 have it present but
commented out.)

The patch itself has been tested, and carries minimal risk. This would
stop Totem's usability regressing due to the GtkBuilder conversion, and
as such we think it's an important change.

The patch is attached.

Philip

String freeze break request for glib 2.14

2007-11-24 Thread Marco Barisione
Hi,

When the the compilation of a regular expression fails we just set the
GError message to the *untranslated* string returned by PCRE (the
library we use for regular expression handling). See bug #482313[1] and
patch #99501[2].

The patch adds 44 new translatable error messages. If some languages
will miss the translations of the new strings, nothing would change from
the current situation, so it should be safe to commit the patch.

String/UI freeze break request to fix BGO# 401546

2007-02-25 Thread Veerapuram Varadhan
Hi,

As part of 2.9.x development, we added support for choosing various
Send Options provided by both Novell Groupwise and Microsoft
Exchange.

While committing the feature, the fix attached to
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=401546 didn't make it in,
which is duly found and reported by Andre Klapper. As, the attached fix
adds a new string and removes the *added* UI button from the toolbar - I
am hereby request for a string and UI freeze break to commit the fix.

Let me know, if you need any further information w.r.t the fix.

Thanks,

V. Varadhan

Evolution string freeze break request

2006-08-26 Thread Daniel Gryniewicz
Hi, all.

As part of working on the fix for bug #349966 (1), Srinivasa Ragavan and
I have decided that a new gconf key needs to be added. This would break
string freeze, so I'm requesting here, before anything gets committed.

Here's the background. As part of the change that switched evolution
from using gnome_file_entry to using gtk_file_chooser, a bug was
introduced where, under some circumstances, a URI could be saved in the
gconf key /apps/evolution/mail/save_dir, which was later passed to a
non-URI accepting function. The discussion around the fix for this
resulted in my producing a patch to convert all users of that key
(except one) to using only URI based file access, allowing remote access
over, say, sftp:// URIs. Srinivasa and I agree that this is a very
desirable feature to have in 2.16, especially since the mixture of local
paths and URIs has caused problems in the past.

However, there's one piece of code in evolution that still uses
gnome_file_entry for it's dialogs, which won't take URIs. This is the
code to add a specific alarm audio file to an alarm in the calendar.
This code was also using the /apps/evolution/mail/save_dir key, which we
consider to be a bug. Adding an alarm file shouldn't change the
directory used to save attachments. In addition, changing this to use
gtk_file_chooser was deemed to large a change for this late in the
release cycle. It will occur in evo 2.9.

The solution to this is to add a new key for the alarm audio file
dialogs to use. This key will be /apps/evolution/calendar/audio_dir.
The schema (2) added for this breaks string freeze.

If this freeze break is granted, I'd like to add another request to it:
the key /apps/evolution/mail/save_dir, which has existed for many
versions, currently has no schema. I would like to add a schema (3) for
it, which would also break string freeze.

Approval 1 of 2 and I don't think i18n people will complain (but it

The problem for the i18n people are string additions, not removals. If
what you are seeking is i18n-team approval, I don't think you need it. I
think, though, you might need release-team approval.

String removals don't count as string freeze break, as explainde on:

It has my approval, provided that there will be a new release with the
fix, and that you let translators know when you apply the fix, and
give them plenty with time to update translations before the new

2005-12-29 Thread Shaun McCance
The string bibliography is misspelled as biblioraphy in
gnome-doc-utils, which is pretty embarrassing. Can we fix
this on the gnome-2-12 branch? Is there any sort of tool
that will automatically transfer translations over? Like,

fix-po speler speller *.po

That would rock. Somebody should write it. :)
