are. Please, use things that are as new as GNOME 3.
And still my old point -- this is not the problem **you** should try to

I had problems once where I'd only changed the order of two of the three variables in a string, so had only labelled those two in that way. Once you change the order of any of the variables, you need to label them all with a $ and number. My university uses a simple and apparently very effective anti-spam trick:
When an SMTP connection from an unknown/external host comes in, the
connection is accepted, and the remote machine then sends HELO or
EHLO. The local server then does nothing, but simply holds the
connection for thirty seconds before answering. If I understand
correctly, this is well within the required limits of an SMTP
conversation, but a spammer, which has to go thru thousands or
millions of such conversations (and perhaps operates from a pwned
private computer) will usually just send the message without listening
to what the SMTP server answers. Since the SMTP server has not yet
answered the HELO/EHLO, it ignores everything the remote host says.

Click on Gnome 2.18, from where you can download the po files to work on. You can use the existing images, but it really looks great if you can supply localized images. :) I notice that the Release Notes this year are in several files, not in one single file. (This is very fiddly for merging previous translations.) release-notes.xml is the main file, and the other .xml files are "includes", which will be plugged into the main file when it is displayed online. So we need to translate _all_ the .xml files listed in the "C" directory, not only "release-notes.xml". For those of us who prefer to work in .po format, this means converting each file, then converting back. :( So it really would help if we could have the whole doc as _one_ PO file for each language, or POT for new languages, on the docs page, all merged and ready! Note that you can use either gnome-doc-utils/poxml or po4a [1] to convert the DocBook files. If you're collecting sets of converters, the Translate Toolkit [2] rounds them out. For those interested in distributed/online translation, Pootle integrates [3] both po4a and the Translate Toolkit, so can convert your docs for you. ;) I remember some mention, some time back, of a way to get localized screenshots without each team having to install a pre-release. Is this available, and if so, how do we use it? It does help that the text of the release notes is still very similar with 2.14, so we can re-use quite a bit of our previous work. Well, the question is whether any languages need that.
Only translators can answer that question. You won't
have any problems with Mapudungun, since you can just
translate everything to "ka":
msgid ", "
msgstr " ka "
msgid " and "
msgstr " ka "
msgid ", and "
msgstr " ka "
Easy. But if anybody does need something like list
starters or enders, they need to tell me so I can
add some code to handle it.
And, by the way, a big thanks to everybody who's
replied. Internationalized document formatting is
hard, and I can't do it without your help.

However, I think that string statistics have a place in terms of giving a more complete picture of coverage/completeness. Since this is a bit more of a "work page", I think the word counts make most sense here. The following works nice for fuzzy messages. Since the previous original text (#| msgid "...") is available, first make a word-level diff of current and previous original text. Then count how many words are the same for both. If that number is over a relative threshold of total word count for current text, say over 50%, add it to translated word count, and add the remainder to untranslated. If it is below the threshold, add the full word count to untranslated. There are some missing files in po/POTFILES.in, and some files referenced in this file that doesn't yet exist. I'm attatching a patch that fixes this bug.
