A tip I've often used on Windows... the "tab" key does file expansion. So, if I'm at C:\ in Windows, I can type "Prog" followed by the tab key, and it will expand to "Program Files", with the quotes needed. (If it brings up the wrong directory, such as "Program Data", continued presses of the tab key will move to the next matching file). I find this MUCH easier to navigate to an executable file on Windows, and it helps to avoid spelling mistakes. Yeah, I'm suspecting the "can't write to file" message is when trying to save the file back to its original location which is under a different user than the one who's desktop is front and center at that moment. But we'll need that error message screenshot to confirm. And then there is the obvious backup file(s) mess to clean up. And as you note, that will likely involve copying files from one user to another and correcting their permissions accordingly. (before any cleanup within GnuCash itself!) I'm not versed on such, but I'm sure someone here is. Specifically there was a reply to my first message about providing a path/filename where you provided C:\users\administrato\documents is where the only one which "fits" i.e. where GNU FEB 12 2019.gnucash is. There are literally hundreds of others to which Adrien has now responded. He correctly suggests that is a major part of your problem, and begins to work on a solution. Where do you *think* your GnuCash file is supposed to be? (full qualified path please) And what do you *think* its file name is supposed to be? In my earlier email I suggested that you tell us the complete path/filename for those files. Windows likes to foreshorten them in some cases, especially if there are external drives involved. I should have said complete unqualified path/filename in case the path names have been shortened to stay under the character count limit or to identify an external drive. You reported that updating your book worked until 26 July, so something must have changed around that day. Do you remember changing anything, like updating GnuCash or Finance::Quote, that might offer a clue? There may be an error in your tracefile (see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Tracefile) that explains why the prices aren't being updated. When trying to retrieve quotes in the GUI are you getting the message box saying that it couldn't retrieve quotes for some stocks followed by a list of stocks that fail? Can you sort your directory of files in a date order. not filename or GC timestamps, but the "date last modified" or something similar? The "most recently saved file" will be the point where GC stopped working for whatever reason, that we still need to get to the bottom of, once you have a useable datafile to hand. I certainly have been updating my records since then. Barry You perhaps might have noticed discussions here about keeping books for multiple entities. That of course means each would have its own file (different filenames, ideally in different directories (file folders). By the same token, it is possible to have multiple files for the same entity, either intentionally* or accidentally. IF, when you open your books under gnucash all you see are old transactions (you know you have been entering transactions with effective dates later than that) you probably have accidentally created more than one file. Having work habits to prevent this sort of thing is not strictly speaking a gnucash problem. If you were say writing a paper using your favorite word processor it would be important that you didn't end up with duplicate files (some of your editing done to one, some to the other) Tell us, what is the NAME of your gnucash books and what directory (file folder) is it in. BTW, forgot to mention, the date of the last transaction in the file that I mentioned that opens, is in 2022!! I certainly have been updating my records since then. I think I said in the OP that the message I have been getting about not having rights was not the first 'save' but I think I may have had finger problems, around then, as I said in the OP. I will try, again, to send the list of files, I thought I had created a jpg. For information, the file that opens today when I start Gnucash is - GNU FEB 12 2019.gnucash.20230730134528 If that is the date and time for the file I had open it coincides with my recollection of the date and time I was working when the message 'could not write to file, etc., arose.
