[GNC] Commodity is currently used...

In the Securities editor, I am trying to delete a security.

[GNC] Crash after delete sub-account

2024-09-28 Thread Fred Tydeman
After doing an Import of a QIF file, I had a new top level account
(along with Assets, Equity, Expenses, Income, Liabilities, Trading).
It had one sub-account with one transaction in it.
So I had Tax Forn:IRA as the account and sub-account.
I edited the transaction by changing that part of the transaction
to Expenses: us:Tax:Fore:IRA
So, Tax Forn:IRA is now empty.
So much for the background.

In the Accounts tab, I click on the IRA sub-account of Tax Fore.
I then click on Delete at the top of the screen.
Now, Tax Fore still has a right pointing arrow indicating that it
has sub-accounts (yet I just deleted the sub-account).
If I click on that right pointing arrow, Gnucash crashes.

[GNC] Import QIF into placeholder

2024-09-28 Thread Fred Tydeman
Doing a File: Import: Import QIF
of stock brokerage transactions,
some of them end up in a placeholder account.
This mainly happens for cash transactions.
They end up in the parent account, which is the brokerage account;
which is a placeholder account.
It would be better if the import process warned about this error.

After the import is done, I manually correct those transactions.

[GNC] Advanced Portfolio report - missing stocks

2024-08-31 Thread Fred Tydeman
I am a USA based person/book.

Part of my COA looks like:
asset Assets
asset Fidelity
asset Intl
cash CAD Canada dollar stocks
stockEIF:CA
cash GBP Great Britain pound stocks
stockRIO:GB

Those two foreign stocks do NOT show up in the Advanced Portfolio report.
I believe it is because their parent is a Cash type account.

I noticed in other books, the Cash account at a brokerage does not
show up in the Advanced Portfolio report.

It finished after 6.5 hours! Why so long now? As before, it took about 5

With this book, it did not crash (the crash I got before was with another

It appears to have updated the book with the prices of the good securities.

After several hours, I got (in the Price Database window):
Price retrieval failed: Failed to parse result returned by Finance::Quote
Error message:
(1): expected value
Result:
then comes lines and lines of text that exceeds the screen

I have tried to capture that window with
 PrtSc key
 Alt-PrtSc
 Shift PrtSc
but none of them worked. Any suggestions?

I also tried Left mouse and touchpad to try to select text
and that failed.

[GNC] Get Quotes hung

2024-08-11 Thread Fred Tydeman
Fedora Linux 40
Gnucash 5.8

Running Tools: Price Database: Get Quotes hangs or runs "forever"
All my stocks are setup to get prices via Yahoo_Jason
Today I am in Medellin, Colombia, and my internet is very fast.
Clicking on the X in the top right of Price Database window gets
a popup about window not responding, do I want fo force exit.
Saying yes to that ends the Gnucash program.
Restarting Gnucash and doing Actions: Check & Repair All
runs in under a second and leaves the Save icon dim
(so nothing was changed).

Trying this on another file/book that has no stocks, but does have
four currencies gets: Quote reported failure set no error.

[GNC] Price quote fail popup too tall

2024-07-27 Thread Fred Tydeman
Today, when I tried to get stock price quotes, I got a popup
Unable to retrieve quotes for these items:
very long list that is more than one screen

So, there is no way to get to the No/Yes items at the bottom of the popup.
So, I clicked on the X at the top right of the popup to kill it.
I assume that means none of the good quotes were saved.
I also assume no damage was done to any data.

I tried a second time and the popup was shorter, so the No/Yes items
were visible and clickable.

2024-07-13 Thread Fred Tydeman
I was wrong; same month/day, different years.
I saw June 30 in both places, but failed to notice the different years.
Under COP, the USD entries ended July 19, 2023.
Under USD, the COP entries started July 30, 2023 and go to today.
Those are for Finance::Quote entries.
I try to update the Price Database each Saturday.
That is for both currencies and stocks.

Re: [GNC] Zeros in Balance sheet

2024-06-20 Thread Fred Tydeman
One account I checked in detail has no children.
In the report, it shows as VOO
The only account with that name is a trading account.
The corresponding stock investment account is Vang 500 ETF
The account has two buys and two sells in 2023 with a net of zero.
I am doing a Balance Sheet for today.
I believe that most (if not all) of the zero lines are for stocks that have
been sold
and have no children accounts.

If I run a report with default level of 3, but check Flatten list to depth
limit,
then the zero lines in the report go away.

Re: [GNC] Delete a trading account => crash

2024-05-19 Thread Fred Tydeman
By mistake, I had two Asset accounts for the same stock, but with different
spellings.
That is what produced the two similar Trading accounts.

So, I ended up doing in the Cash account that did the buys and sells:
In split view mode: change the stock asset account from one to the other,
press Enter, that got me a popup to adjust the number of shares.
Press Enter and all was fixed.

Doing that was a lot easier than deleting and re-entering the transactions.

When I was done, one stock asset account and one trading account were
both empty, so could be deleted. I also deleted the wrong spelling in the
Security editor.

Running GnuCash 4.14 on Fedora Linux.

Due to a mistake on my part, I have two Trading accounts:
  IVR-PC
  IVRPRC
for the same security.

First, I tried changing Trading:IVRPRC to Trading:IVR-PC in a Sell or Buy
transaction from the cash account. However, when I pressed Enter,
Gnucash undid my change.

Then, I tried deleting Trading:IVRPRC account and moving its transactions
to Trading: IVR-PC.
That crashed Gnucash.

I am now running a Check & Repair all (takes many minutes).

'make' and
'make test' ran
But, 'make install' failed due to permission issues.
Does it need 'su' to do the install?

A guess on my part.

In the Balance sheet:
  Click on Options
 Click on Commodities
Click on Price Source
  Try Closet to Report Date

You might also check if the conversion rate between PHP and USD was
recorded:
Tools
   Price Database
  Currencies
Look in both USD and PHP for the date in question.

Re: [GNC] IRA conversion

2024-04-06 Thread Fred Tydeman
I assume that that Distributions account should be of type Income (not
Asset).

It appears that Income accounts cannot have a stock account type (so cannot
move stock via this method).
Would have to fake it by selling the stock (in 'from' account) to get cash,
move the cash, then buy the stock
(in the 'to' account).

Also, since X dollars come into Distributions and X dollars leave, the net
is zero. So, any report would
show zero income.

I think a better solution is to use four splits:
Cash or stock coming out of Regular IRA Asset account
Cash or stock going into Roth IRA Asset account
Cash going into a Distributions Income account
Cash going into a dummy Expense account

Then, make sure to exclude the dummy Expense account in any reports.

Re: [GNC] Net Assets

The "Net Assets" value at the bottom of the screen does NOT match the
Assets account Present(USD) value.
So, when I saw the word "Net", I assumed Assets-Liability.
But, as you pointed out, that would be Equity.

If I play with Edit:Preferences:Accounting Period
I can keep or remove Grand total (at bottom of screen)
If I change End Date, the Net Assets value does change, but not match.
I have tried: Today, End of this year, End of previous year
If I change Start Date, the Profits value changes, but the Net Assets
remains the same.

Re: [GNC] Net Assets

2024-02-24 Thread Fred Tydeman
With arrow/cursor over "down arrow" on right side of bottom line, Press and
hold down the left mouse button .
While still pressing down the left mouse button, press "down cursor/arrow
button"
(can also press up arrow button to scroll thru the list of assets).
Trying again, it appears one does not need to hold down the Left mouse
button to scroll thru the list.

But, I still do not know where the Grand total value comes from.

[GNC] Net Assets

2024-02-24 Thread Fred Tydeman
I am looking at the Accounts account screen.
At the bottom of the screen, is Net Assets: $xxx and Profits: $yyy
I assume Net Assets is the current value of Assets - Liabilities.
If that is the case, numbers are wrong by a lot.
If that is not the case, what is Net Assets?

[GNC] Popup shows wrong acnt

2024-02-08 Thread Fred Tydeman
OS: Linux
GC 4.14

I have some accounts open, so the bar near the top shows the accounts.
If I hover the mouse over one of those accounts, I get a popup with the
full "path" (acnt:subacnt:subacnt:...).

I then click on the leftmost Accounts, pick one of those other accounts
(that are on the bar), click Edit, change the parent account (move to a
different place).

If I then hover the mouse over that account (on the top bar) that just
moved, it still shows the old "path". Seems like a very minor bug (if
others have this issue).

If I close that moved account, and reopen it, when I hover the mouse, it
now shows the correct "path".

[GNC] QIF import ignore account

As part of a QIF import, I have the following transaction:

[GNC] Wrong Total(Period)

2023-12-13 Thread Fred Tydeman
OS: Fedora Linux 36
GnuCash: 4.14

Looking at the expanded Chart of Accounts, Total(Period) shows a non-zero
amount
for a specific Income account. Yet, all of the accounts and sub-accounts
involved
have 0 for Total(Period). There are no transactions for this year for any
of these accounts.
I have also run an Income Statement for just those accounts for this period,
and it shows zero. Accounting period is Start of this year and End of this
year.
The accounts are a mixture of USD and COP.

Assuming the screenshot makes it to the list, the columns are:

Both of the accounts Colombia and Interest have zero transactions in them.

[GNC] Stock quotes hung

2023-09-09 Thread Fred Tydeman
I am running GnuCash 4.14 on Fedora Linux 37

Last weekend, I could get stock quotes.
Yesterday and today, all I get is a spinning circle.
I end up rebooting Linux to get out of a hung session.
All of my stocks are getting prices from yahoo as json.

In looking at the online documentation in 11.3 about gnucash-cli,
I have tried
gnucash-cli --quotes info
and
gnucash-cli --quotes dump
Both get: Unknown quotes command 'info' and 'dump'.

Doing
gnucash-cli --quotes get /lindata/GnuCash/tybor/tybor.gnucash
gets: Found Finance::Quote version 1.58
and a hung session.

Re: [GNC] Addition to basis

2023-08-08 Thread Fred Tydeman
Thank you for the instructions.

I started with my existing transaction with the Imbalance split in one
of the Income accounts.

In the Imbalance split, I changed the Imbalance account to the stock
asset account. Pressed tab twice. Got a popup of Transfer Funds.
Changed the Currency transfer Exchange Rate to 1.0 and clicked on OK.
Clicked on Enter at top of screen. That filled in the Trading account
transactions.

Moved cursor to the stock asset split and clicked on Jump at top of
screen.

Now, in the stock asset account I (mostly) followed your instructions.
Cursor in stock asset split. Type in Memo/description, tab to stock
asset account (already filled in), tab, 0.0 (for shares), tab, 0.0
(for price), tab, tab, Click on Enter at top of screen.

I might be doing something similar.

For a hotel being built, I bought 3 shares on credit in a private company
In the Assets:Investment:Hotel which is an Account Type of Stock
I bought 3 shares with the money for those shares coming from
Liabilities:Loans:Hotelwhich is an Account Type of Liability.

Then, as I get income from other places, that income is used to
pay off the Hotel loan.

So, perhaps, you could replace "Hotel" with "person1", "person2", ...

I have Trading turned on.

The income accounts in question are using COP as their currency.
Transactions in those accounts do not show any splits for Trading.

Income in those accounts is coming from an Asset account that also is in
COP.

So, there is no conversion between COP and USD involved in that transaction.

Both reports are: Start of previous year and End of previous year
Both reports select all the Income accounts.

In playing around, if I change
  Commodities: Price Source:

Weighted average of all transactions in the past,
then the two reports match. But, the Transaction
report is using the same COP/USD conversion

[GNC] Income Statement versus Transaction Report

2023-07-19 Thread Fred Tydeman
In looking at Income Statement versus Transaction Report for just
Income accounts for all of last year, the numbers do not match.

My main currency is USD. However, for this file, all the income
was in COP. Now, during the year the number of COP / USD varied
a lot: from around 3748 to 4846; year end was 4846.

For Report Options, I am picking:
Commodities: Price Source: Last up through report date.

It appears that the Income Statement sums up all the COP
for the year and uses the year end COP/USD value.

While the Transaction Report uses the month end COP/USD value
for the transactions in that month.

I believe that the US tax people want foreign transaction values
converted to USD at the time of the transaction (not use the
year end COP/USD value). So, I think the Transaction Report
has the correct values.

Is there a way to have the Income Statement use values like the
Transaction Report?

If I then click on Enter on top of screen, the Trading split is finally
