I have 2.6.19, and in Edit » Preferences » Register Defaults I have ticked "Only display leaf account names." Having chosen my bottom-level account names carefully, I don't have to go through, for example, "Liabilities:Credit Cards:AP CapitalOne" but instead just type "AP C" and the account is filled in. David, This is my thoughts also, using the basic 'checking account' selection during account wizard creation keeps the parent accounts so no problem. Thanks both for super swift replies. *"Now that I think about it, you probably need to keep the top level accounts as they determine the attributes that child accounts use to maintain adherence to the accounting rules." * David Carlson-4 wrote > I cannot say for certain as I am still using release 3.8, but I believe > that release 4.4 has had a major improvement to the account selector in > that it no longer requires strict entry of parent accounts in order to > select child accounts. Re: [GNC] Creating new file and accounts
I cannot say for certain as I am still using release 3.8, but I believe that release 4.4 has had a major improvement to the account selector in that it no longer requires strict entry of parent accounts in order to select child accounts. Thus, if your primary concern is the number of keystrokes for entry, there would be little or no advantage to dropping parent accounts from your tree. You might save a little ink if you did print something out. Which brings up the second major improvement, the reports are most of the way through a major overhaul, so you might find that you can stop using external spreadsheets for some or all of your reports. Now that I think about it, you probably need to keep the top level accounts as they determine the attributes that child accounts use to maintain adherence to the accounting rules. Re: [GNC] Creating new file and accounts
James, good news - your reasoning is no longer valid. If you check the release notes for version 4.0 you will see this sensational new feature was released: "New type-ahead search added to sequential search when selecting an account in the register: Instead of typing the first few characters of a top level account, the separator, the first few characters of the next level account and so on you may instead type a few characters of any part of a full account name and the drop-list will be filtered to contain only matching accounts. Once you have a small enough list you can use the arrow keys to select the account that you want." https://www.gnucash.org/news.phtml So don't delay, upgrade today, and give your tired typing fingers a well earned rest! Regards Geoff = P.S. THANK YOU to the crew that delivered this feature, it has made a huge difference to data entry usability. Firstly, is it necessary to create accounts under each heading such as 'expense' 'credit card', 'bank account' and so on? My thoughts are yes if you intend to run balance sheet or cash flow reports, in my situation I export accounts individually into HTML then excel or similar My reasoning is to reduce the number of keystrokes or scrolling when entering data, for example typing in a petrol receipt currently requires expense:car:petrol to be selected in drop down, it would be far easier to hit the shortcut key for petrol if petrol were a main and not sub account (if that makes any sense?) To summarise, my main objective using GNC is very basic double entry book keeping to ensure cash ends up where it's sent and duplicate entries are not made, for any report I use excel.
