[Goanet] HERALD: Tuesday Tunes

2002-04-24 Thread Frederick Menezes

www.oherald.com dated April 23, 2002

TUESDAY TUNES

Officials are in, MLAs are out?

IF IT WERE an ex-MLA and a bureaucrat, who were lined-up for an audience
with the chief minister at the latter's official residence, who among the
two would it have been to be granted the meeting first?

In normal circumstances, of course the politician. But not any more... at
least not since the Goa Legislative Assembly was dissolved.

It so happened that a top-rung bureaucrat bumped into an ex-MLA of the BJP
in the gallery outside the CM's chamber at 'Mahalaxmi'. Both, had to meet
the CM. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, this is what the
resigned-looking ex-MLA had to say to the bureaucrat: You should see him
(CM) first. You people have the priority now.

The statement had the bureaucrat looking embarrassed, and searching for
words, but before she could utter any, the CM's office boy walked up to her
with a message from the boss to see him!

Give-and-take of leaks

SOME HUMBLE BUREAUCRATS may feel uncomfortable with their new found
superiority over their political counterparts, like the one referred to
above. Wonder if her sub-ordinates, would feel the same way once a recent
circular that promises officials of the 'joint-secretary' rank for cabins
fitted with air-conditioners, is implemented.

With the politicians suddenly vacating cabins at the secretariat, the
government has discovered that air-conditioned offices are now in excess.
This, apparently, is why the government has suddenly felt that
joint-secretaries too deserve cabins with ACs.A Superintendent of Police,
recently, 'leaked' information about such a government circular. The leak,
obviously, was inspired by a jealousy-driven desire that it would result in
adverse publicity. Nice try, Mr SP!

Saffron clue?

THERE ARE SEVERAL legends about the origination of Goa, rather 'Gomant' as
it is referred to in the Mahabharata. One such legend speaks of an arrow
shot from a peak of the Sahayadri by Parasurama - the sixth incarnation of
Vishnu. This arrow, endowed with special powers, pushed the sea backwards,
making Goa emerge.

The site www.republicday.org, has reproduced this legend which also speaks
of present day Benaulim as the Bann-halli spot, meaning, where the arrow
fell.

Wonder, whether it is this legend that inspired the present day, former
legislator of Benaulim, to rediscover the pre-historic origins of his
constituency. How else then, can one explain cutting of Congress lines and
into the saffron political turf?

Goan for Presidency!?

WHO IS IN the race for the Indian presidency?

We've heard of Dr Karan Singh, Dr P C Alexander and even Dr Farooq Abdullah.

But should we mention of Dr Leo Rebello..Leo who? would be the instant
response. Read this un-verified posting on the net, that is reproduced
hereunder, and, who Dr Leo is, will be discovered we hope.

Whereas, Dr Karan Singh and Dr P C Alexander (the two other contenders)
have passed their prime, Dr Leo Rebello - who will be 52 in April - if
elected will be the youngest President of India. He represents three
minorities : Christians (by birth), Parsis (by marriage) and Humanitarians
(by choice).

He is highly qualified, well-traveled in some 51 countries, has written 25
books, has 30 years of solid all round social work experience. His
contribution to Humanism in Health is widely known. He has once again been
nominated for a Nobel and recipient of many international awards.

He also has clean habits, is a vegetarian and teetotaler and linguist, who
speaks fluent Hindi, English, Marathi, Gujarathi and Konkani.

Dr Leo Rebello is a statesman and not a politician and his heart beats for
India. He is not self-serving and he will not compromise. All over the world
there are young leaders. Only in India old men are elected even though the
Constitution of India provides 35 as the minimum age for that august post of
President of India.

In Modi mode

SO NATIONAL LEADERS would once again make a bee-line for this tiny state, in
order to campaign for their respective political parties. CM Manohar
Parrikar in fact announced, that Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Arun Jaitley
would be the star speakers for the party in Goa. Just a small thought, had
Mr Modi been invited too?

Playing it safe!

IT'S STRANGE HOW thorough Goan politicians can be when it comes to the Code
of Conduct or elections, rather.

Last week, sports journos who drove upto the bungalow of Minister for
Forests Prakash Phadte, at Altinho to attend a press conference called to
announce the first-ever West Zone Tennis Ball cricket championship, were in
for a surprise when officials humbly said the venue was shifted to a
prominent city hotel.Sample this now in vogue off-the-record explanation
provided by a high-profile official. The minister did not want the press
conference to send wrong signals with the Code of Conduct in place. Both
the official and Mr Phadte probably had a point. The press conference was
due to be followed by the

It is important not to go overboard with the mythical effectiveness

because of their cultural value - their value as a heartwarming
component of our rich tradition, and for sheer amusement. But as for
their usefulness in the treatment of genuine medical conditions,
their chances of therapeutic success might charitably be slightly
better than of music curing an AIDS patient. And many of these
remedies can pose a significant threat to one's life.

For example, another addition to stomping breech boy and other home
remedies is a deceptively innocuous and silly little Goan folk
remedy, whose name I consider to be a triumph of our homegrown Goan
imagination. This remedy is fittingly called mithacho goo (Hey, this
did pass Herman's filter!). It's use, as far as I know, is limited to
little girls with infected newly pierced noses. The whole idea behind
this remedy is to separate the dirt from common salt, and apply it to
the purulent bleb on the pierced nose of a hapless child. In every
instance that I have seen it used, the poor victim ended up with a
nose twice as infected and horribly swollen, crying to be rescued by
the dreaded antibiotics.

How about that little ayurvedic branch that is still

There is some benefit from our home remedies. No doubt

Hi Boogie,

Firstly, I don't think Goa is bilingual. And if it was, I am sure Portuguese
would not be the other language, would it ?
But then, maybe we just have to wait until Eddie writes back claiming Rua
or Avenida are commonly used by Konkani speakers and therefore are now
Konkani words.

Secondly, I think the most appropriated thing to do in a bilingual city
would be to put both names one after the other like:

Queen Elizabeth Drive
Promenade Queen Elizabeth

But I guess someone would then argue why is English first and French after
and so on. So, I guess Canadians have chosen the easiest solution ... It is
funny though ...

Paulo.

Paulo,
In a bilingual city like Ottawa, the street names are generally
marked in both official languages. Usually the English descriptor
(Street, Avenue) is after the name, while the French one is before
the name. For example:
Hunt Club Road is displayed as Chemin Hunt Club Road
Wellington Street displayed as Rue Wellington Street
Queen Elizabeth Drive as Promenade Queen Elizabeth Drive

Could the Panjim Municipality have the same idea?

Hi Eddie,
.

I say there is lack of detail in the sense that nobody actually cares
about
looking for the correct spelling or meaning.
That is why we sometimes read in Goa: Rua Abade Faria Road or
Hospicio
Hospital, etc.

Nobody actually cares anymore if it makes sense or not.
This is what I mean when I refer to the current lack of detail in Goa.

It is good for a laugh ! Sadly.

Formerly, at the entrance of the city of Mapusa (coming either from Panjim
or from Parra) there was an avenue called Avenida Manuel Antonio de Sousa.
After the takeover of Goa by India the bust of M.A. de Sousa was replaced by
that of Mahatma Gandhi and the Mahatma's name was given to the avenue. The
nameplates (one at each end of the avenue) was bilingual, but in three
lines, thus:

Avenida
Mahatma Gandhi
Avenue

so that one could say it either way: Avenida Mahatma Gandhi or Mahatma
Gandhi Avenue. I think this three-line nameplate (maybe even in three
different colours) might be an idea worth being considered by the municipal
councils of Goan cities and towns.

As regards what Paulo wrote earlier, worse than Rua Abade Faria Road is
the nameplate near the Holy Spirit Church of Margao: Largo Padre Jose Vaz
Road. Note the discrepancy between Largo and Road.

I too smell a trap in your last e-mail :-)).

1. If you read the first e-mail from Gilbert, he starts this thread by
mentioning that malcurad or malcurada are corruptions of the original
Portuguese malcorada name. So, obviously you will not find malcurad in a
Portuguese dictionary. The task you ask me is also impossible and you know
it very well beforehand.

2. As our Fred Noronha says and very well, malcorada in Portuguese means
poor colour - mal corada. And that is exactly what the developer/creator of
Malcorada Mangoes had in mind when he/she named that tree

[Goanet] Ancestral Home Remedies

2002-04-24 Thread Aloysius D'Souza

Hi Goans Everywhere

Her are a few more ancestral home remedies:

1. Kokam or Binda -- a small pharmacoepia --
The skin dried and salted -- (bindi che sola) -- good
anti-allergen
The fat from the seeds -- bindel -- very good to soften skin --
if you could get enough cosmetic manufacturers would love to
use it as the base for lipstick
The pulp of the ripe fruit -- made into a syrup -- Amrut
okam -- good to bring down blood pressure
2. Pumpkin seeds (yellow variety) -- dried and pounded with gur and copra
and formed into ladus -- very good to get rid of worms of all
types -- Goans who eat pork roast (from Goan pigs) with the centre portion
a lovely pink colour could get tape worms, which work themselves
into the brain eventually
3. Nashni or Ragi -- specially the dark red variety we get in Goa --
very rich in iron and easily digested -- ideal for
building up strength after an illness -- with gur as TISAN -- or
with salt as AIMIL -- you could add grated fresh coconut,
raisins, etc to make it interesting for kids -- sprouted nashni, dried and
powdered, is even more nutritional
4. Caju feni -- with hot water, lime and sugar -- ideal for colds and
coughs
5. Aloe Vera -- that spiked lily-like plant found in most Goan
ompounds -- good for blind boils, whitlows and the jelly like
stuff inside I am told also for spreading over burns
6. Leaves of the four o-clock flower -- good for putting on a blind
boil with castor oil -- brings the boil to a head
drawing out all the pus
7. Fibrous, juicy internal stem of the banana plant -- the juice extracted
from this dissolves stones in kidneys, bladder, etc -- should be
tazken for at least fifteen days -- a small glass each morning
8. Drumsticks, leaves and flowers are supposed to be good for a hundred
and one ailments -- dried drumsticks are very
good for filtering out toxic contents of water
9. Hot water with salt and haldi powder -- even better than only hot salt
water -- for clearing up blocked nasal passages and relieving
a sore throat
10. Warm salt water (water should have been previously boiled and
ooled -- not raw Bombay municipal water) -- poured through one
nostril and allowed toflow out of the other -- clears out all the
accumulated pollution and also clears nasal passages blocked
with cold mucus -- good specifically for people having sinusitis
11. Dishti che panna (I do not know the English equivalent) but could show
the plant to you if my cousins have not destroyed it at our
Nachinola house -- ground with vinegar and FENI and applied to any
sprained or swollen joint -- reduces the swelling almost
instantaneously
12.If you are visiting and forgot to carry a toot-brush -- take a
mango leaf -- pull out the centre stem -- roll eachhalf and rub
you teeth with this roll
13.If you want to sham -- try putting a raw onion in your arm-pit and
sit in the sun for a while -- I have not tried this but at SMHS,
Mount |Abu this was said to be effective -- you get a high fever
14. Marlon was lucky -- he sucked cod liver oil capsules -- I had to
take cod liver oil straight from the bottle -- but it did give me
resistance to colds and coughs at SMHS, Mount Abu -- now doctors
prescribe fish oil for reducing
cholesterol -- I have a permanently high cholesterol lever
(triglycerides of the level of 700 and above)

If I remember any more I shall add them to this list -- but all you Goans
everywhere please think and put down your own memories -- maybe someone
will accumulate all of them -- and we can make a fortune selling these
remedies when the world's scientists reach the acme of the antibiotic and
the germs continue to build resistance to these antibiotics -- we started
with penicillin, then tetrcyclines, then chloramphenicol, them omnicycline,
now nopflox, each more powerful than the last -- eventually we have
reached a stage where we are taking a huge mallet to kill an ant and end up
bashing our own toes

Cheers

SCHOOL SOCCER – KUWAIT.

JABRIYA MEETS ENGLISH SCHOOL FAHAHEEL IN FINAL.

In the first semifinal at Sour Ground on Friday 19th of this month at 8.30
A.M. Jabriya Indian School defeated Indian Central School by 3-0. From the
beginning itself Jabriya started playing very aggressively in which their
forwards especially Kevin on the right flank with bustling moves created lot
of openings for his colleagues but due to poor marksmanship by the center
forwards they failed to forge ahead. However, in the 15th minute of first
half, receiving a pass from his colleague on the right flank, Kevin dribbled
past two defenders and nicely fed his colleague Mahmoud Nasir in the box and
Nasir without wasting a single moment hit a powerful shot into the far left
corner of the net. Earlier Munif missed a nice sitter when his right footer
went over the bar. In the second half ICS mounted heavy pressure on the
citadel of Jabriya but with firm custodian under their bar and reliable
defenders Jabriya thwarted all the clever moves initiated by ICS. In the
20th minute of this half Jabriya again mounted pressure on ICS and succeeded
in increasing the tally to 2-0 thru Munif with a fine goal scored from left
flank. The third and final goal was scored five minutes before the final
whistle by Nasir again. This match was refereed by Eric Almeida who was
assisted on the lines by Pillay and Alvaro. Before the start of the match
the chief co-coordinator of the tournament Mr. Fidelis Fernandes introduced
well known Indian philanthropist and great sports lover Mr. Mathews the
Chairman of the JIS along with Inacio Faleiro ex president of KIFF and Mr.
Amaldo the president of Curtorcares United to both the teams.

The second match between Indian Community School - Kheitan and Gulf Indian
School was just a drab affair in which ICS easily won the encounter by
scoring 4 goals without reply. With this victory ICS qualified to compete
for the third place play-off before the final at the same venue. The
scorers for this match were Naveen Kumar, Nighaut Kumar, Agai Jacob and
Amaldo Fernandes. This match was refereed by Joe and he was assisted on the
lines by Tony and Viegas. Before the start of this match again Fidelis
Fernandes introduced Mr. Cajetan Pereira The President of United Friends
Circle and Mr. Thomas The Principal of New Indian School to both the
participating teams.

The final of this match will be played on Friday at 4.00 p.m. between The
English School Fahaheel and Jabriya Indian School. Before the final at 3.00
p.m. Carmel School will play against Indian Community School for the third
spot.

As an added attraction on the same day and at the same venue before the
beginning of both the matches and also during the intervals some athletics
items will be conducted namely 100 metres dash, Shot Put and Tug of War
which is going to be between GOA XI led by Justinho and REST OF INDIA XI led
by Lawry Pinto. The prize distribution for the winners and runners-up and
also for Basket-Ball tournament will be done immediately after the grand
finale thru the hands of some of the distinguished guests and dignitaries
including Mr. Sodhi the Councelor-Indian Embassy and Mr. Adeeb Shuaibher who
will be attending this sports festival at Sour Ground. These activities are
organized to mark the Silver Jubilee of the establishment of United Goans
Centre.

curado comes from the verb curar which means to cure - maybe Theo or Paulo

We can certainly provide a list of home remedies without disseminating
gratuitous misinformation about genuinely effective modern treatments.
It is important to know that most antibiotics are every bit as natural
as any of the household herbal remedies. They were and are still
obtained from various types of molds (fungi).

All of the above-mentioned antibiotics are still widely used, and save
countless lives everyday. Scientists develop new antibiotics for
several reasons, all of which have the common purpose of maximizing
benefit to the patient while reducing harm. A newer more powerful
(whatever that means) antibiotic is not more harmful. In most cases it
reduces the number of doses and the length of treatment, and thereby
increases patient compliance, which in turn decreases the chances of
developing resistant bacterial strains.

The discovery of antibiotics and their rational use in modern
treatment is a pivotal event in the history of our civilization. That
single event has contributed to the increase in our life expectancy
more than any other event. Home remedies and other kinds of quackery
have existed since the Stone Age. All they have done realistically is

compelling) anecdotes. They have contributed diddly-squat to human
health on a global scale.

Valente's main claim to fame was that he once served

No doubt Valente was waiting for designers to get the

Sunila et al - doesn't malcurado mean poorly cured?? Cor is colour,
curado comes from the verb curar which means to cure - maybe Theo or Paulo

PARRIKAR: ENGINEERING ANOTHER GOA...

WILL HE make it? Metallurgical engineer Manohar Parrikar, who ascended the
chief ministership of Goa after defections were engineered from the other
parties, offers a detailed pre-election interview. Does he have something to
boast about for his 16-18 months in office? Can his claims of doing much for
the state translate into votes? Did he compromise on the values he wore on
his sleeve as an Opposition leader? Did he do-in his colleagues by
dissolving the Goa assembly abruptly? What factors does he see as being
responsible for his rise in Goan politics?

Or, is he something of a Machiavelli? Is he guilty of dumping his
political allies of the past? What about Parrikar's moves to build bridges
with (and wield control over) Opposition legislators? Why couldn't the state
nab the culprits involved in arson against a mosque at Succcour and
attepting to set alight a church-door? Will Gujarat cast its long shadow on
the ballot-box in Goa... one way or another? Is Parrikar in the running for
chief ministership, should the BJP win? What is Parrikar's vision for Goa?

What is Parrikar's style off leadership? And, for that matter, on
defections -- having benefitted from them himself.

Haven't plans to downsize the state's giant bureaucracy been overshadowed by
the Parrikar regime's employing of another large army of bureaucrats,
particularly in departments like the police, the functioning of which
doesn't inspire much confidence? What does the caretaker CM feel about the
turn of events in Delhi, where the BJP seems to be underoing trying times,
to put things mildly?

I would tend to agree with Santosh on this. Being a latecomer to this
discussion, let me digress the topic a bit by offering some insight into
how these home remedies differ from region to region.

Being of North Indian extraction and settled in Goa, I have discovered
quite a few differences in outlook when it comes to these home remedies.
North Indians typically have the chapati or roti as their staple diet,
while South Indians and Bengalis have rice as their staple diet.

Whenever anyone is sick with fever or an upset stomach, the first things
North Indians are told to avoid is rice. When it comes to South Indians
and Bengalis, they take the opposite position and avoid consuming any
chapatis.

Food poisoning as a result of eating fish never exists in Goa, Kerala or
Bengal, but for North Indians, food poisoning is *always* the result of
eating fish, never mind even if the fish was eaten weeks ago.

I have noticed that many North Indians avoid eating rice at night, and
claim that it causes indigestion. Never seen any South Indian ever
complain of that, and they eat it 24/7.

For skin diseases such as rash, there is a tradition among the people of
South India to use the water of boiled rice to cure it. North Indians tend
to use the water of boiled Masoor Dal with a little turmeric as a cure.

Once I had an extended stay in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. There I discovered that
the secret to a healthy life is to have a glass of fresh camel's milk
daily. For those who have not been near camel's milk - well, it stinks! In
conversations with Sindhis from Pakistan, they also tend to hold that same
belief. Ask any person from the UP/Delhi/Haryana area what the secret to a
healthy life is, and their answer is a glass of fresh goat's milk. Then there
is the French secret of healthy life - a glass of wine everyday. I don't
think many in the Muslim world share that belief.

Then there is the Muslim misbelief that strength comes only through eating
meat, and that also, the redder it is, the stronger you get. Of course I
am sure that Hindus would have appropriate generalizations as well when it
comes to meat. Another misbelief prevalent in North India is that by
eating rice you get lazy and fat. A common remark I have heard justifying
this belief - dekha nahin tumne key bangali log kitney kaamchor hotey
hain? For the North Indians, eating chapati/naan/parathas makes you
hardworking and strong.

To end, let me relate the best of 'em all. North Indians and Pakistanis
have discovered the secret why Bangladesh has such a high growth rate
in terms of population. Well, believe it or not, but it is in the fish.
Apparently, because you eat fish, you tend to have more children. Go
figure!

[Goanet] 2002 Goa election

2002-04-24 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes

2002 GOAN ELECTION.

Finally the date for the election of Goa Legislative Assembly has been fixed
as 30th of next month. As usual all the former “Chor ani Bamtte” MLAs will
try to contest the coming election either on the same parties or
independents or new parties. Whom the voters will elect and on what basis?
In his masterpiece “If I Am Asassinated” written from the death cell by the
former premier of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto wrote “My sons will not be my
sons if they don’t shed the blood of those who dare to shed mine. Who are my
sons? Shanawaz and Murtaza (both real sons of Bhutto) and all the sons of
Pakistan are my sons”. Till his death Gen. Zia who was responsible for
hanging Bhutto had to face problems from the sons of Pakistan till his death
in a plane crash. Based on the statement of Bhutto let me say from Kuwait in
a small room where I stay “My Goan voters will not be Goans voters if they
don’t destroy in the coming election all the defectors and ‘Chor Bamtte’
MLAs who dare to destroy Goa by defecting from the elected party symbol to
other parties that bribe them with huge money power and loot Goa. Who are
the Goan voters? They are the real and genuine Goans who have great love for
the good of Goa”. If today Goa is seized by the worst communal party BJP
then the major culprit is Sardinha who allowed Parrikar and his BJP key to
open the door for worst communal party to rule Goa. Goa had unique
distinction to be a model of communal harmony and as such communal party
like BJP should not have place in Goan politics. Sardinha should be
punished severely in the coming election and who will punish him? If
Curtorcar voters are really Curtorcares then they will show their wisdom.
It is Curtorcares who were deceived and cheated by Sardinha. Congress party
should be forced to deny ticket to Sardinha to contest the coming election
on its ticket. Sardinha will go down in the history of Goa as worst than
Judas, it is a shame to have such a MLA in any constituency. Likewise all
the defectors should be denied tickets and if they still persist and succeed
in getting tickets from the same parties then people power should be used
and it should be used very forcefully. It is a turn now of “Demos” to use
their “Kratia” in a right way. It is not enough just to talk saying Goa is
going to dogs but to avoid it further going to dogs people must rise to the
occasion and throw out all the defectors and Chors and Goondas. The
constituents must not allow to foist on them the candidates not of their
choice. The constituents must join together to stop the political parties
to foist their choices on their heads. It is time now for the constituents
to stop the party bosses in Panjim and Delhi to impose their choices on
people against the wishes of the people. Constituents must stop acting like
“ghantta boils” and fight for their rights to select right candidates.

Every time our MLAs fool us. Once they get elected they take full liberty
of the confidence voters given them and thus they make ill use of it. One
of the reasons for them to take power in their hands is there is no
alertness on the part of the voters. When they defect the voters take it
lying down, neither their parties come out openly to condemn and raise
public awarness. I remember when first time in Goa 5 UGP MLAs defected to
MGP, Jack Sequeira organized public meetings in all the 5 constituencies to
condemn them and make the local constituents aware of the wrong they did for
their confidence. Valent Sequeira from Calangute constituency was one of
the defectors, he had a small gotie type of beard. While delivering his
public speech attended by huge crowd at Calangute soccer ground, Dr.
Sequeira asked “where are the all the prominent people including the doctor
who were telling me to give ticket to Valente Sequeira? Why they don’t now
go after Valente Sequeira and shake him by his beard?”. Then he uttered
these words to the utter astonishment of the crowd “Khuim assa re to
bokddeachea khaddacho tumcho Valent Sequeira? Cholat re ani dhorat re
tachea khaddak ani haddat re taka hangasor”. Fearing the worst, Valente
Sequeira was hiding at Candolim in a secret location away from his house.
But such a pressure is not coming now on our defectors because people and
our voters are also become corrupt for accepting corruption. The so called
social workers are also become dormant because they are also wanting to
contest the elections because they feel only from the Legislative Assembly
they can change the society. It is not true. By not contesting the election
Mahatma Gandhi and Jayaprakash Narayan brought revolution in India. It is a
turn now of real social workers and real lovers of Goa to do something to
awaken the public conscience so that good and reliable people are elected.
The Church must also come on fore. Because of Church silence for so long we
Catholics in

in getting tickets from the same parties then people power should be used
and it should be used very forcefully.
It is time now

[Goanet] Aloysius, nasal lavage, Marlon, cod liver oil and Uncle Tom

2002-04-24 Thread Aloysius D'Souza

Hi Jose,

This is a sort of yogi trick -- the yogi centre next toCatholic Gym Bombay
sells you something like a feeding cup but smaller --you stick the spout in
one nostril bend over your wash basin and tilt your head sideways -- do
not swallow -- the water comes out through the other nostril and on the
way does enter the sinus chambers and tends towashthem clear also -- hence
the need to use water that is previously boiled and then cooled

 Dear Aloysius,

There were a couple of points in your ANCESTRAL REMEDIES post which
 caught my attention:

 1.
[water should have been previously boiled and cooled -- not raw
Bombay municipal water) -- poured through one nostril and allowed
to flow out of the other -- clears out all the accumulated
pollution and also clears nasal passages ]

poured through one nostril and allowed to flow out of the other ?

That is interesting? I wonder how this feat is accomplished.

 2.

[ Marlon was lucky -- he sucked cod liver oil capsules -- I had to
take cod liver oil straight from the bottle -- but it did give me
resistance to colds and coughs at SMHS,]

This is something which the British did very well in East Africa and
in The Caribbean. sell these folks the idea that Cod Liver Oil esp
the Seven Seas brand somehow provided resistance against colds and
 coughs.

I wonder how Cod Liver does that in individuals who are otherwise
adequately nourished. I could understand in the malnourished kids
who have deficiency of everything including Vit A D ( which cod
 liver oil has ).

In East Africa, India, Caribbean and wherever there is sunlight,
milk breadand adequate nutrition, additional Vit A D can
 only do one thingHypervitaminosis.

If there is anything which identified East African Goans for us, it
 was these two items:

 1. Seven Seas Cod Liver Oil
 2. The inbuilt notion that Uncle Tom was a butt-kisser( forgive
the French ) of the Colonials.

In both cases, I wish they would only read.

 3.
[now doctors prescribe fish oil for reducing cholesterol ]

Am not so sure that the capsule/bottled form is effective

 so much for now
