[Goanet] VOICE OF GOA
Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service circulated by Goa Civic Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)[EMAIL PROTECTED] * --- VOICE OF GOA --- I wish to salute the people of Cortalim constituency for electing well-known social activist Mathany Saldanha to the Goa assembly in the just concluded elections. In doing so, they have also dumped one of Goa's most corrupt politicians Mauvin Godinho and taught him a good lesson for his indiscriminate looting of public funds and for espousing the cause of non-Goans more than Goans. No doubt his major votes came from them and so it was also not surprising that most of the speakers at his campaign meetings were hired from Kerala and Karnataka. Perhaps he can try his luck in elections in those States now. It is an irony that a man has made so many sacrifices in the last 26-27 years while championing the cause of Goan society, had to wait for so many years to make it to the assembly. Mathany Saldanha is a man who has fought so much for the social causes and against injustice done to Goans that one has lost count of the number of times he was arrested by the government to suppress his powerful voice. Mathany who began his struggle with the issue of ramponkars later went to fight against anti-people policies and other anti-environment programmes of the successive governments. He is a learned man who knows what he speaks, who takes up each issue on its merits and does not discriminate on the bases of caste or religion. He is not in politics for the sake of cheap popularity which most of our half-baked, semi-literate politicians yearn for, but the only thing that matters to him is the well-planned and ecologically sound development of Goa. And who can ever forget Mathany's role in securing the status of official language to Konkani. Here is a man who has a vision for the all round development of Goa and is not into politics for personal gains unlike the general breed of Goan politicians. Mathany Saldanha is like a shining beacon in the filthy world of Goans politics. Thank God, now at least we have an MLA who is not afraid to speak out his mind without the fear of losing his office. Every Goenkar should be proud of him and should support him in all his endeavours. Mathany, we consider you to be the leader of not only Cortalim, but you represent the bold voice of the silent majority of Goans who are desperately waiting for a clean and dedicated politician like you. All Goenkars are strongly behind you. [Goanet] Re: Miracle is an appeal to ignorance
Dear Readers: I want you to understand that I was trying to put the Miracle concept into context, so that misconceptions, posited in Santoshs posts, may be exposed to clarity. In [EMAIL PROTECTED], santoshhelekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: MIRACLE IS AN APPEAL TO IGNORANCE. I am sorry, but I think it is self-evident that miracle is an appeal to ignorance. Mr. Helekar: Like all other things on this subject you indeed have miserably failed to objectively prove how Miracle is an appeal to ignorance. We can all see that we are not getting anywhere with Santoshs rhetoric that Miracle is an appeal to ignorance unless of course he can substantiate through his scientific prowess and conclusively prove that in fact miracle is an appeal to ignorance. I had cited just two examples of a miracle by definition: Red Sea parting as depicted in the movie The Ten Commandments (i.e., not simply a low tide); Jesus raising the dead man Lazarus to life (John, xi). It has been thousands of years now that these miracles occurred and neither can history deny it, nor has science (scientists) refuted these occurrences, through plausible scientific explanations. Inasmuch as I like to believe our intellectual here who states that: Miracle is an appeal to ignorance. Like others on the forum, I would like to request our esteemed scientist, -- to demonstrate to this audience through his own scientific wit (or through his peer-review) that the above are not miracles but merely an appeal to ignorance. And if you think the onus of providing scientific proof is NOT upon you, through your sheer inability to do so, (or for lack of scientific wit in this area,) then please hold your peace. You are NOT doing any service to either science or humanity here but causing upheavals, by your constant mocking of the subject matter. [Goanet] World Cup first quarter
CONGRATULATIONS BRAZIL. Once again history repeated itself when Brazil once again expectedly defeated England in the quarter final today a few hours before. One mistake of a defender means one goal and that was what exactly happened when young Michael Owen was given a golden and easy chance by Brazilian defender to score the first goal of the match. Being opportunist and sure to capitalize on such defensive errors Owen made no mistake. But, besides this goal Owen was just a pale shadow of his otherwise real aggressive self. Captain David Beckam from whom lot was expected also proved to be a failure. The credibility of both these players were wrongly judged earlier on the basis of their strength against the weak opponents. Brazil is Brazil. They are not any other European team which is using hit and run techniques. Soon after conceding an unexpected goal, Brazil proved to everyone why they are called Brazil, the artists of soccer. Artistry in soccer is in their genes and blood, whoever their players may be and that they are artists was proved by Ronaldinho today. His move to score the equalizer by Rivaldo was just a sheer piece of genius normally not seen among players from other countries. Within a split of a moment he dribbled two-three defenders in the box, lifted his one leg in one direction, then moved the ball to other direction with the other leg and flicked it to Rivaldo just to neatly place it into the net with his left foot. Earlier before this equalizer Ronaldo was just unstoppable, his every touch to the ball, his every move was just a terror for English defenders who lost much of their concentration and firmness. With his clever moves Ronaldo really mesmerized the opponents. It was he who attracted the attention of at least two defenders towards him thereby giving more room to his other colleagues for maneuvering. It was very difficult for English team especially their defenders to defend continuously and stop the great Brazilian attacking trio of Rivaldo-Ronaldo-Ronaldinho. Besides this deadly trio the Englishmen were unable to cope up with the heavy pressure put in by the great Roberto Carlos. What a great attacking defender he is having horses stamina. It is just a pleasure to see such a fabulous player in this World Cup. Skipper Cafu of Brazil also played his role very well. England had no proper answer to the attacking skills of Brazil though they were defending their citadel well. But how long defenders can defend the continuous onslaught of their opponents? This time Brazils defence played well filling the loopholes earlier appreared of course with the exception one silly mistake by Lucio. The second half started well with Brazil and within a few minutes young Ronaldinhos excellent goal from 30 meters away from the goal in a direct free kick sealed the fate of England who I feel did not deserve victory. If they had to move ahead by fluke I am sure the interest in World Cup would be lost. At least Brazilian moving up into semi final has created lot of interest in this World Cup. For thirty long minutes England had great opportunity to score and not only equalize but also to score more goals and carry the day due to the advantage of having one man more on the field than that of Brazil. Still they could not take advantage of the deficiency of Brazil who played their hearts inspite of having one man less and to play in such a situation and still win the match is not an easy task. The goal that young twenty-two year old boy Ronaldinho scored was very fantastic, it was not an ordinary task to score such a goal when England had a very good custodian under their bar and that this custodian was totally baffled to see the ball into his net itself shows the artistry and mastery of Ronaldinho to score such a beautiful goal. It was sad to see his exit from the field with a red card when he dangerously fouled his opponent in front of the referee. No doubt it was a genuine infringement deserving castigation but surely not the Red Card. Any way, well done Brazil, you deserve to win and go for semi-final while your opponents England do not deserve a place in the semifinal because they failed to beat you when you were having such a disadvantageous position for 30 minutes. The second quarter final of the day between USA and Germany though ended in favour of Germany yet USA deserves more compliments than the winners because USA displayed a very good brand of soccer, a very attractive compared to their rivals and winners Germany. USA should have forged ahead in the beginning itself but due to poor marksmanship, erratic and gutless finishing they failed to score. Even the much needed equalizer could not be acquired only because USA forwards showed lethargic attitude even near the goal mouth. It is great to see USA players having excellent control of the ball, beautiful passing and correct positioning besides
[Goanet] FEATURE: Fly by Goa... the state's coast is transforming..
FLY BY GOA, THE STATE'S COAST IS TRANSFORMING FROM GREEN TO GREY CONCRETE By Frederick Noronha PANJIM, June 21: Fly by Goa, and you be in for a shock to minutely observe the changes brought about in India's smallest state over just three decades, as an innovative and just-completed video documentation using hi-tech satellite imagery says. What this (pictoral documentation) seeks to do is take a trip along the Goan coast and show what it looked liked in 1971 and how it looks today, says National Institute of Oceanography (Goa) scientist Padmanabh Sathe. Bridges, industrial estates sprawling across hilltops, small towns getting fast congested and destroyed sand-dunes are some of the features that emerge from Sathe's thirty-minute short-video, which is titled 'Fly by Goa: The Changing Shores'. I'm not a film-maker. So the video turned out something different (from what was anticipated), says Sathe modestly. But by juxtaposing satellite imagery -- a field he intimately works with -- on to video-shooting, he manages to make a point of how rapid coastal change is pinching Goa. Starting the journey at the Kali river, in Karnataka just south of Goa, Sathe winds his way northwards. Some parts of the remote taluka of Canacona -- which has been opening up to tourism only in the last decade or so -- look like what they did in the 'seventies. Canacona incidentally is one of the few areas which has forest, mountain and seashore all in close proximity to each other. But the river Talpona's shoreline has changed significantly, having progressed seawards. This indicates the deposition of new sediments. Rajbag's sandy beach is over 50 metres wide, while Palolem was once famous for its sand-dunes and since has got overrun by tourism. Many places have changed drastically. Tourist shanties of all types crowd Palolem beach in Canacona. On the other hand, there's the secluded Agonda beach -- near where a giant project unsuccessfully tried to come up, getting blocked by villagers and others. From Canacona and Quepem's rugged terrain, we shift to the flat and fertile Salcete, starting with the fishing village of Betul. In 1971, the landscape looked benign. Eastern sides of the shore were wooded. Population pockets were largely far away from the sea-shore, says Sathe, talking of the south Goa sea coast. What the Town Planning authorities should be doing, the people had already done. But that has changed in some areas. In Cavelossim village, high profile tourism activity is visible across the entire beach, and the video catches a mechanised shovel scoop out sand-dunes to be taken to waiting trucks. Benaulim too is beginning to get crowded. Colva is crowded with built-up structures, while a parking lot is placed right on the sand, meaning that it is continuously covered by a layer of sand! One small lagoon on Colva beach, launched amidst much fanfare in the 1970s at Colva, is today treated as virtually a dumping site. Fatorda, a small village of the 1970s, is now visibly changed when viewed from the sky, due to its high-profile football stadium. Mormugao taluka has only two important beaches, the environmentally-degraded Baina and Bogmalo beach. Next, the video and satellite pictures take us through San Jacinto island, the recent Konkan Railway route, and the man-made the Cumbarjua Canal. Chorao island, outside Panjim, symbolises an equilibrium between man and nature, argues Sathe. On the other hand, the neighbouring island of Divar is facing erosion, and invading saline river waters. Today, Divar appears to be sinking. The river is shall-owing, says he. Sathe believes the difference between these two areas is the presence of coastal mangrove plants in Chorao. Mangroves, one of the few species that grow in saline water, have a major role in protecting coastal zones. He also explains the formation of a 'sandbar' across the mouth of the River Mandovi, which blocks navigation of larger vessels for part of the year. Sathe believes that the argument from Konkan Railway re-alignment campaigners -- who wanted to shift the route away from the coast and claimed that reclaimed and low-lying 'khazan' lands would get affected -- wasn't quite valid. But cities too have changed due to congestion and chaotic over-building. In 1971, I was a schoolteacher in Mapusa, and know what the town looked like then, says Sathe, referring to the small commercial capital of North Goa which is now an over-built town, thanks to a mix of the building boom and politicians ever-eager to make deals with corruption. Satellite pictures from the 'eye in the sky' clearly reveal how one-time villages like Porvorim have changed with innumerable housing complexes over the last two to three decades. In 1971, the road to Mapusa was marked by wide open spaces on either side, with the absence of concrete houses, says Sathe. He points to satellite images which seen a confusing mix of varied shades of grey to the untrained eye. But Siolim village

But I am going to state as clearly as I can one last time where my beef is. I have no problem with people who believe in miracles based on faith, just as I have no problem with people who believe in God based on faith. After all I am surrounded by them. My problem is only with people who claim that certain miracles are certified by a scientific committee and a legitimate scientific scrutiny or scientific study and analysis. The miracle is essentially an appeal to knowledge. I am sorry, but I think it is self-evident that miracle is an appeal to ignorance. Those who claim that a miracle has taken place have already accepted that God has made it happen. They don't ask any more questions. There is no room for any further inquiry. They have already surrendered their mind, their intellect and their curiosity to the idea that they cannot possibly understand how God made it happen. They cannot fathom God's ways. For them miraculous occurrence as an act of God is the be-all and end-all explanation. Learning cannot begin when inquiry ends. Knowledge cannot be acquired when wisdom has already been received. History has shown us time and again that advancement of human knowledge has occurred every single time that we have stopped believing in a miraculous explanation. If we had continued to believe that thunder and lightning were acts of God, we would still be lighting oil lamps in our homes. [Goanet] NEWS: Clanging, banging and roaring fans cheer Brazil (Delhi)
Clanging, banging and roaring fans cheer Brazil By Hindol Sengupta, Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, June 21 (IANS) Madly shaking their green-yellow streaked faces as they jiggled their bottoms and furiously waved the national flag, Brazilian fans cheered the Samba lions to victory in the Indian capital. Clanging giant brass cymbals, giving non-stop whoops of delight and incessantly blowing paper horns and whistles, about 100 Indians and Brazilians gathered at the country's embassy Friday, to wildly cheer their team as it took on England in the World cup quarterfinals. This is like the final for us. Brazil has won the World Cup, grinned 39-year-old Ricardo Pinto, an attaché at the embassy, at the end of the pulsating match. The embassy, donned with hundreds of green and yellow balloons, exploded as the final whistle blew, taking the South American soccer giants to the semi-finals. Sitting in white, cushioned chairs or black metal stools, before a white wall where a projector flashed the television image, the fans rose to their feet almost every time a Brazilian player touched the ball. Goal, goal, gooal! yelled 57-year-old lawyer Anil Mittal, wiping the perspiration from his bald pate, as he fixed the green-yellow Brazilian flag tied as a bandana over his thick spectacles. I've been a Brazilian fan for 30 years. They are the greatest! Mittal said above roar that began from the time Brazil rolled on to the field in Shizuoka, Japan. A huge hush fell on the audience when England striker Michael Owen found the Brazilian net in the 23rd minute. For a moment, the Indians and Brazilians were stunned to silence, their paper horns hanging limply in their hands, the cheer stuck in their throat. Then Saurav Dutta Gupta, a young government employee from Kolkata, shouted: It's okay, they'll make up. Come on, come on Brazil! Even as he spoke, Brazilian ambassador Vera Barrouin Machado clutched a wood carved statuette of Ganesha - the elephant-headed Hindu god who is said to bring good fortune -- and looked decidedly downcast. In a few minutes though, it was back to normal, the roar returned, as did the clanging, accompanied by a duet with a bunch of plastic bottles being banged on the chairs. The aroma of Brazilian tobacco filled the air as the fans chanted: Go, go, go Brazil, go, go, go! Come on Ronaldo, come on Ronaldinho, come on Rivaldo! And come on Rivaldo did, equalising in the 47th minute just before halftime. The crowd went crazy. They did the samba, hugged each other, danced with each other and generally went into the halftime break convinced they would pick the cup. After the break, as the English team ran into the field, the crowd booed. When the curly locks-swinging Ronaldinho shot curled about the heads of the English defence to score the second goal for Brazil, electricity was whizzing through the room. Moments later, when Ronaldinho got a red card, the fans at the embassy couldn't believe it, as couldn't the star ball-player on screen. These English are bloody fakes, said Jose, the husband of one of the embassy officials. From then on, they cheered every time the Brazilian defence downed Beckham or Owen or any of the English players. When the final whistle blew, the balloons started exploding right, left and centre. This is a famous victory, a great victory, a victory we have been looking forward to for a long time, said Machado. Now the cup is ours. --Indo-Asian News Service =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=- To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet == For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails? J. Almeida writes: Einstein believed that the Universe is an act of God, but that didn't stop him successfully challenging Newton's scientific dogmas. --- I think part of the problem of theists wanting to believe that famous scientists such as Einstein and Hawking believe in their god comes from the common quote: God does not play dice with the Universe. To those who already wish that Einstein believed in god, Einstein's mere mention of God here is all the assurance they need. But to truly understand what he meant when he said that, one has to dig further into Einstein's views toward God and religion. Here are some quotes I found relating to Einstein's views on God religion: I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with fates and actions of human beings. To help the innocent victims of abuse, Barbara Blaine, founded Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). Visit http://www.survivorsnetwork.org. A number of nuns and lay sisters are actively involved with the group to help victims, 50% of SNAP members are women. I spoke with Barbara Blaine today on the phone to congratulate her for her leadership in starting the group and helping the victims (some of whom you might have seen on televsion during the US Bishops meeting in Dallas). Like me, you may be fortunate not be immediately and directly impacted by the scandal but I urge you nevertheless to support this group. Please visit their website at http://www.survivorsnetwork.org Barbara Blaine informed me that anyone who wants to start a chapter for survivors in Goa, India or the Middle East (or anywhere for that matter) can email her for more info at [EMAIL PROTECTED] She feels there may be victims who are afraid to come out and ask for help, especially in places where these matters may be taboo [India?]. Barbara's phone: (312) 409-2720 or (312) 399-4747 (cell phone). Address: SNAP, PO Box 6416, Chicago, Il. 60680, USA E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] At their time of need, do not ignore the victims. This is not a scandal to be swept under the carpet. Regards, George __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] Milagrino's Fake Appeal for a Foul
--- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], Joe Vaz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I want you to understand that I was trying to put the Miracle concept into context, so that misconceptions, posited in Santosh's posts, may be exposed to clarity. My legs are tired. I cannot go on in over time. I am also afraid of sudden death. I have a new substitute. His name is Sunithino. He is better than me at free kicks. He will take care of Joelinho. But this substitute Milagrino (Joe Vaz) from the other side keeps challenging me for a rematch. The big problem I have with him is he repeatedly slumps to the ground without being tripped, and then incites the crowd to appeal for a foul. This time he has also appealed for a red card in my penalty box. This can only mean that he knows all along that his goal is guarded by an invisible goalie who is believed to have made some miraculous saves. But nobody really knows whether this is true or not because nobody saw these games, and nobody has seen the goalie. Like all other things on this subject you indeed have miserably failed to objectively prove how Miracle is an appeal to ignorance. Those who want to verify whether the above statement is credible or not, please refer to my earlier post. I will never be able to objectively prove anything to somebody who is not objective about it in the first place. But there is ample objective historical evidence that the demystification of a miracle claim in every single case has led to freedom from ignorance and advancement of knowledge. When belief in miracles was widespread, people died of small pox and syphilis. Belief in miracles never helped cure any disease. Acceptance of miracle cures did not and does not produce any advancement of medical knowledge. I had cited just two examples of a miracle by definition: Red Sea parting as depicted in the movie The Ten Commandments (i.e., not simply a low tide); Jesus raising the dead man Lazarus to life (John, xi). As I alluded to before, nobody saw these games. Joe Vaz, Have you seen them? Do you have authentic photographs of these events in real life by any chance? I have seen the movie. I hear they used props and things like that in it. But even in the movie enactment, the parting of the Red Sea looks pretty fake to me. Having said that, I know Joe Vaz is trying to win cheap sympathy for his argument from an audience that is overwhelmingly sensitive to the mention of Jesus's name. How can an irreverent lout like me ever score a goal against Jesus? So I will head this ball over my goal line. Let Joe Vaz have his cheap corner. Like others on the forum, I would like to request our esteemed scientist, -- to demonstrate to this audience through his own scientific wit (or through his peer-review) that the above are not miracles but merely an appeal to ignorance. The above miracles are an appeal to ignorance because those who insist in the literal reality of these events are asking people to believe in things that are in violation of scientific principles and everyday experience. They are asking people to believe in things that are not supported by objective evidence. They are trying to legitimize miracle as a valid logical explanation, bypassing even the common sense need for truthful eyewitness testimony and independent corroboration from multiple sources. And if you think the onus of providing scientific proof is NOT upon you, through your sheer inability to do so, (or for lack of scientific wit in this area,) then please hold your peace. Only referee Viviana can command me to hold my peace. Milagrino's appeal for this red card is so obviously fake that if he were on our Xerrachea groundar, I would have complained that he is eating roddi. Eating roddi on our ground calls for stopping the game and going home with the ball, all the while shouting obscenities at each other. You are NOT doing any service to either science or humanity here but causing upheavals, by your constant mocking of the subject matter. Joe Vaz, I humbly and respectfully note and reject your above opinion. Here is mine for you to reject, even with contempt if you like. I consider it my inalienable right and duty to think freely, and express myself fully and forthrightly in any public forum that I participate in. And yes, I do believe I am doing a service to Science and humanity, as much as you believe you are by spreading your gospel. I do believe however that you are doing a service to mankind. [Goanet] Evening Standard (London): 30 months for teenage drug smuggler.
Headline: 30 months for teenage drug smuggler. Source: Evening Standard (London) 21 June 2002, at: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/dynamic/news/top_story.html?in_review_id=61986 9in_review_text_id=589728 A teenage girl given a 30-month sentence for drug smuggling kept a diary detailing her dreams of love and making a fortune as a courier. The Swedish 15-year-old, from Uppsala, near Stockholm, was arrested as she came through Manchester Airport on April 11, having flown in from Bombay. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty at Manchester Youth Court to importation of 646 grammes of the Class A drug diamorphine - heroin - and was sentenced to 30 months in youth custody. She had been persuaded to act as a courier by Henry, a 23-year-old Nigerian, who she described in her diary as her boyfriend, the court heard. It was in this diary that details of her plans to never have to work in her entire life were revealed. Brian Cummings, prosecuting, said the girl wrote about the fees she would earn from the mafia in India and described her feelings for Henry, whom she had just met. While waiting for her connecting flight from Bombay to Manchester via Zurich she wrote: Me and Henry will make big money from that one. I miss him like mad. The couple met in September last year after a plan to open a restaurant in Goa with her mother was thrown into disarray by the September 11 terrorist attacks. Peter Wetherby, defending, said Henry had dubious connections and had taken advantage of his young client. He said: She was clearly besotted with Henry and a young, honest and decent girl fell for the lure of romance, easy money and worldwide travel. She did not have a genuine contemplation of the seriousness of it all. === The tabloids tomorrow are likely to carry far more lurid details. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails?
