-- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- I believe that Mary is far more powerful than Jude. She is a saint AND the mother of God, while Jude is just an ordinary saint. However, I submit there is one problem in that she only listens to Catholics which would be a problem to some on this mailing list. I would therefore scratch her name out as a universal remedy. A more logical solution would be to go directly to god and thus bypass all these middlemen and women. Have you ever prayed to one of your favorite saints for a luxury German car such as a Mercedes AMG S55 convertible with a mechanized retractable roof, ultra soft Connelly leather and with the latest active air suspension but only ended up getting a Volkswagen? True, both VWs and Mercedes are German cars, but I somehow get the feeling that I have been shortchanged by my favorite middlemen saints. Alas, I have used up my quota of car wishes and learnt my mistake a little too late. Since God is supposed to be the source of all things, the response to one's prayers to him should be much faster and definately far more accurate. Of course, even better advice would be to work hard and smart and to invest one's money wisely. These days however, it feels as if one has a better chance of being heard by a spook in heaven than by making it big in the stock market. [Goanet] NEWS: Government inquiry trashes Mother Teresa's 'miracle'
-- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- Government inquiry trashes Mother Teresa's 'miracle' By Krittivas Mukherjee, Indo-Asian News Service Kolkata, Oct 19 (IANS) An inquiry by West Bengal's Communist government into claims of a medical miracle by Mother Teresa has concluded that the revered nun did not possess any divine powers as claimed by the Vatican. The Vatican, which is studying Mother Teresa's case for sainthood, has accepted as a miracle the report that a tribal girl had been cured of her abdominal tumour by wearing a medallion with the missionary's picture. Under Catholic canonisation laws, an instance of a miraculous act is necessary to ordain a holy soul as a saint. But a probe by the Left Front government in West Bengal, the state that Mother Teresa made her home, said Monica Besra, the tribal girl from the state's South Dinajpur district, had been cured with medication and not by any miracle. "Monica Besra's tumour was cured purely because of medication and there is no reason to believe that her recovery was an instance of a miracle," additional district magistrate Goutam Ghosh told IANS over phone from Raigunj. The state government ordered the probe after doctors who treated Besra complained against the talk of a miracle and alleged that they were being lured by Catholic missionaries to pass off the case as a miracle. Government officials spoke to doctors, villagers and Besra's husband Sekhu Murmu before preparing the report. Murmu has also rubbished the talk of a miracle behind his wife's cure. "She was admitted to hospital, took medicines and had several medical tests done on her. So she was cured with medicine," he told reporters. All the publicity his wife is receiving has also peeved Murmu. Ranjan Murshed, chief of the Balurghat Hospital where a tribal girl was treated in 1998, said Besra was suffering from tubercular meningitis and had developed an ovarian tumour. Several tests and an ultrasonography had been conducted on her and the tumour had been detected. "She was cured after a prolonged anti-tubercular treatment," Murshed said. The government inquiry report also claimed that the Missionaries of Charity (MoC), the order founded by Mother Teresa, had taken away all the medical reports, prescription and other documents from Besra. The controversy has been further complicated with Salesian priest Fr. A.C. Jose, considered an authority on canonisation laws of the Church, calling for a review of the whole process of the miracle as there were doubts about the Besra case. "The miracle should be examined again to protect the reputation of the Church," he said, adding that this was possible, since the Pope had not yet signed the decree of Mother Teresa' beatification. The Vatican has been expediting the case for Mother Teresa's sainthood at an extraordinary speed because of the Albanian-born nun's immense popularity. The Church made certain exceptions like allowing the sainthood process to start only about a year after her death. Usually, a sainthood candidate has to go through a mandatory five-year wait period after his/her death. Mother Teresa is the 14th person to be considered for sainthood from India. Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 26, 1910. She came to Calcutta, now Kolkata, on January 6, 1929. She founded her mission in 1949, a year after which it received the Church's approval. Mother Teresa received the Nobel peace prize in 1979. She died here on September 5, 1997 and kings, queens and heads of states attended her funeral. --Indo-Asian News Service To view GoaNet's archives http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net For (un)subscribing or for help, contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Don't want so many e-mails? [Goanet] Times of India: Aires Rodrigues challenges another top appointment.
-- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- Headline: Appointment to top post questioned. Source: Times Of India. Sunday 20 Oct. 2002 at http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/articleshow?artid=25692734 Text: PANAJI: The appointment of Rajesh Singh to the post of Director, Information and Publicity, by the Goa government has run into rough weather. In a legal notice to Chief Secretary Baleshwar Rai, advocate Aires Rodrigues has drawn the government's attention to recruitment rules for the appointment to the post, which confers on him administrative, financial and statutory powers, by Government Order dated September 30, 2002. According to Rodrigues, Rajesh Singh does not qualify for the post and cannot even assume charge of the post. He alleged that Singh was a BJP advisor during the recent Assembly elections and was appointed as the Press Liaison Officer to the Chief Minister on contract basis. "From this junior post, Singh has been elevated to this high post against all norms. Therefore, this appointment is totally illegal and in contravention of the recruitment rules and against public interest," Rodrigues alleged. Rodrigues has called upon the Chief Secretary to revoke the appointment order of Singh as in-charge Director of Information and Publicity by October 22, 2002, or he would be constrained to move the High Court. [Goanet] Soccer wonderkids
-- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- I am no sports fan now that I am an old man and every bone in me is bent:-) But folks I am not 70 and I hope, God willing I reach that age and many more years. I have watched the International Soccer Games for quite a few years and have been thrilled by some wunder-kinds like Eusebio, Pele, Maradona and the recent crop of big time earners. Yesterday, I watched a game by girls under 19 years . Some were even 15 and practically all were students. I was shocked at the standard of these kids and before a crowd of 49,000 spectators, in Edmonton, it was a joy to see these young girls play ball (no pun intended) that would astonish my fellow Goans. Is there a time when Indian football games draw such large crowds? The most interesting novelty was an American girl who threw the ball from the sidelines from a distance with her hands straight up holding the ball. She ran, somersaulted and in one leap, just at the edge, threw the ball to a distance that was incredible. She used the ball to touch the ground when she somersaulted. This method is not too accurate at times. I suppose that apart from agility, one needs a lot of practise. Sepp Blatter the President of FIFA was in attendance. The game ended in sudden-death time a few minutes in the second 15 mins. play. A Canadian girl (Sinclair) won the golden ball for a superb performance. The Americans won the game. The finale was very touching with plenty of joy on one side and tears on the other. I was surprised at the performance of the Canadian goalkeeper who put on a superb performance leaping into the air like a gazelle for the ball. Her sister and father (an engineer) came from the Far East specially to see her play. Towards the end she clashed with a team-mate and hurt her shoulder which could have been why she could not keep the ball out. A very scintillating game. [Goanet] Vasco Advocates to go on hunger strike on Monday.
-- What's On In Goa: * Oct 16-27: Vipasana meditation, Alto Porvorim * Oct 24: Antonio Pereira Puraskar (Award) ceremony, Porvorim -- --- Documented by Goa Desc Documentation Service & circulated by Goa Civic & Consumer Action Network (GOA CAN)<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> --- -- VASCO ADVOCATES TO GO ON HUNGER STRIKE - Vasco Advocates Association have decided to go on a chain hunger strike from 21October to press for the dismissal of interim judge, S. O.Laad for lowering the dignity and image of the judiciary. The announcement was made by E O Mendes at a press conference held at Vasco Court building yesterday. Lawyers will assemble at the entrance of court at 10 am on Monday where the agitation will be launched. Mendes said advocates who had to attend cases would cover their mouths as a sign of protest. The decision was taken at a general body meeting of the association held on 16 October. Mendes said Judge Laad was transferred from Mapusa court to Vasco as there was an inquiry regarding his conduct there. He said the Judge is given to shouting at advocates in open court and ill treating court staff. Recently, a clerk fainted after being upbraided by the judge. At a meeting held in March the association condemned the behaviour of the judge and urged him to mend his ways, Mendes said. He alleged that litigants were also being harassed with the sole motive of forcing them to take up the services of a particular lawyer who is close to the judge. Mendes said the association has also resolved to take appropriate action against the lawyer in question. -- GOMANTAK TIMES 19/10/2002 Page III -- === GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 252660 mailto:goadesc@;goatelecom.com website: www.goadesc.org -- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy === To view GoaNet's archives http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net For (un)subscribing or for help, contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Don't want so many e-mails?
