[Goanet]Who you think this person might be??? Part II

2005-05-05 Thread JoeGoaUk

Well, two answers I got privately...Gay & Priest

I am sure, others, were all aware what I was trying to say..

Given the said brief description (see below) of a male, one can very well jump
into
conclusion that the person described most likely a gay (chances 99%).

How about Jesus, the said description fits Him too, so is He Gay?

We dont usually write bad (negative side) of a person specially if he/she is
religeous. Who complains about Priest now a day? Even if we do who will take it
seriosly? Immagine, the situation about 2000 years ago.

We are all children of God. Prostitutes, homosexual/Gay, HIV patients, criminals
etc.

Lets not preach/sermon on Gay, there might be a gay person in the church, after
the
sermon he may choose to commit suicide thinking God does not want him too (as
it is
believed God speaks thru His Messengers-Priests). In many cases, they dont
choose to
be a GAY and they would do any thing to come out from this so called social
evil.
I have spoken two Persons one from Goa n other from UK. Let us all respect all
section of the society.

lets love one and other and that the only way to go to Heaven (even without
going to
church/temple/Mosque etc)

[Goanet]MP3s, VCDs, etc

2005-05-05 Thread Frederick Noronha (FN)
Just came across a pamphlet from Rock and Raaga at Rizvi Towers, Near
Pharmacy College (at Panjim) whichsays it offers original MP3s at Rs 35
onwards, VCDs from Rs 45 onwards, etc...

Would anyone be willing to share their views on what are
good outlets for music and VCDs in Goa? Margao has a
good one too. Which outlets do musicians find to be
good ones to sell their work through? Which would be the
best outlet for Goa-related music?
Thanks SebGoa for your listing of Konkani VCDs. That was an eye-opening to
many of us, who were unaware that there were so many cultural products
coming out -- and apparently being supported by the market -- in Goa.
Perhaps you need a website listing and showcasing all these VCDs, with
brief reviews that would tempt those interested to go in for the VCDs, and
thus encourage those who are taking on this initiative.

Often, the lack of information kind dents into the work of those trying to
promote cultural 'products' of various kinds in a small place like Goa. FN

PS: After I composed the above mail and slept over it, I realised that the
'tempting prices' for MP3s are highly limited offers. Incidentally Goan
CDs tend to be higher priced than global products -- is it because of the
limited size of the market?

To a large extent I agree with Gilbert. If you can't stand the heat, stay

But I wonder if that viewpoint is shared by the Church? Maybe some priest

On my last visit to Goa - March 2005 , I met a Young Goan
by the name of -Yogesh Shet - a former President of Vasco
Jaycees -Vasco .

At one of our meetings , we discussed the need for Goans of
Vasco to see History - as we ...the citizens of Vasco see/ saw it.
We thought that rather than ask the * Historians * to TELL
us , we would encourage the writers(Historians ) of tomorrow ,
the school children to do so.

After much thought ...we came up with the idea of organising
an essay competition for the schools in Vasco , the theme being
* history of Vasco da Gama * through the eyes of the School
children. This idea was fully supported by the Jaycees of
Vasco.

We are sure the success of this unique project - will encourage
other Jaycees and or other NGO s ...in the other parts of Goa
.. to do same . Such competitions will encourage ... the
Young Goans of TOMORROW to take a greater interest in whats
happening in Goa today ...

I would like to appeal to the Citizens of Vasco and Goans wherever
they may be to please support this , what ... I believe is an
unique
essay * competition * . Please SHOW your appreciation by writing
to the organisors ( cc. us ) .. encouraging them.

I understand that the entries submitted for this competition - will be
be compiled at some stage and published after being edited .

I am confident we will get the support from the many Goan forums /
organisations from all over the Goanworld. Some of the Goans involved
in this project in Vasco - not to mentio their names - as did not want
the publicity !

I am also looking forward to the support from the members of the
Goan International writers workshop , I feel sure that they will extend
their support to this worthy project...

Please note that the closing date has been extended to 16th of

[Goanet]Can Luizinho Faleiro "guarantee" the sacrificed 'fellows" will not topple his "beloved" Party?

2005-05-05 Thread ALMEIDAG\(ji\) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Preference to MLAs who quit: Luizinho
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji May 4: The president of Goa Pradesh Congress
Committee, Mr Luizinho Faleiro, has reiterated that
those who “sacrificed” their seats in the legislative
assembly to topple the Bharatiya Janata Party
government should be nominated to contest the June 2
by-elections in five assembly constituencies in the
state.

Addressing a press conference here this morning, Mr
Faleiro told reporters on his return here from New
Delhi that he has conveyed to the party high command
the resolution of the GPCC urging that all those who
sacrificed their seat be given Congress tickets to
contest the by-elections.

Mr Faleiro said that though the GPCC has decided to
contest all the five seats it was for the party high
command top decide whether one of the seats be given
to one of the alliance partners. The final decision on
seat sharing, if any, will be taken by the party high
command, he added.

“For us the understanding with our partners of the
short-lived United Legislative Party comprising
Nationalist Congress Party, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak
Party and United Goans Democratic party, besides us
still stands,” he said.

Mr Faleiro said that whether he remains the president
of the party or not he would strive his best for the
success of the party candidates in all the five
constituencies in the by-elections.

The GPCC leader further said that post of party
president was not a mere position for him but a
mission and that he had undertaken it when it was
offered to him. He said his mission was to topple the
BJP government which was destroying the secular image
of Goa even as it was unleashing a terror regime and
“strangulating” democracy.

“I am happy that during my tenure as the party
president we dismantled the autocratic and fascist
regime of the BJP which was terrorising its political
opponents and those who dared its dictatorial rule,”
he said.

He appealed to the people, particularly the voters in
the five constituencies where elections are due on
June 2, to support the Congress and to vote for its
candidates.

Not justified? How about asking the Iraqi Shia and Kurds, who number over 80%
of the Iraqi population?

Hi Goanet

We have read various views from goanetters on the War on Iraq many saying that
the war was not justified.

Have the Goanetters taken the view of the Goans living in Middle East?. The
neighbours normally know more than the outsiders or relatives. Sometimes, in
decision making, the heart has reasons that the reason does not know.

*** RESPONSE ***
Attacks on Christian churches in Iraq are symptomatic of the general
insecurity that Christians (about three percent of the population, around
800,000 people) face in the post war occupied country. The interim
constitution states "Islam is the official religion of the State and is to be
considered a source of legislation" and while recognizing religious
freedom "respects the Islamic identity of the majority of the Iraqi people."
For some, Islamic identity means the imposition of Muslim morality.

The irony here, of course, is that Saddam's Iraq was a secular state, (I mean
really secular, not just namesake), ruled by the Baath Party. The Iraqi
regime, although suspicious of and sometimes brutal towards the Shiite
majority, protected Shiite and Sunni mosques, Assyrian and Chaldean Christian
churches, and even the sparsely attended Baghdad synagogue, while forbidding
proselytization in general. Saddam appointed Tariq Aziz, a Christian, to top
posts; Christians had by far the most religious freedom until Saddam’s fall,
throughout the middle east and similar to Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. (It was
believed Saddam’s food taster was a Christian).

It is hard to imagine if American imposed democratic set-up under occupation
in Iraq will be successful by power sharing by three major ethnic communities,
belonging to three different sects of Islam. Pres. Bush accomplished second
term, but for the remainder of his second term, he will be inclined to be more
attentive to important personal goals before his term comes to an end. It is
to be seen if the foreign policy that he initiated, would be continued.
Already some countries are becoming bolder, have even test-fired missiles.

Suspicion of this nature is justified only if one
speaks from a position of understanding and knowledge.
In the present case, it has to be at least an
elementary understanding of the mathematics and
physics of general relativity and quantum mechanics,
as well as of observational astronomical data such as
the 2.9 degrees Kelvin cosmic microwave background,
COBE satellite data, Hubble space telescope data, etc.

The specific scientific papers which first derived the
physical nature of the Big Bang as something that
represented the origin of space-time and
matter/energy, which I mentioned in my earlier post,
were written by Stephen Hawking, Roger Penrose and
George Ellis in 1968 and 1970. These references are as
follows:

1. Steven W. Hawking, George F.R. Ellis, "The Cosmic
Black-Body Radiation and the Existence of
Singularities in our Universe," Astrophysical Journal,
152, (1968) pp. 25-36.

2. Steven W. Hawking, Roger Penrose, "The
Singularities of Gravitational Collapse and
Cosmology," Proceedings of the Royal Society of
London, series A, 314 (1970) pp. 529-548.

These papers are not a collection of arbitrary
pronouncements based on blind faith or revelation.
They involve detailed mathematical reasoning built on
evidence-based physical theories of general relativity
and quantum mechanics, and on established mathematical
principles. The derivations contained in these papers
have been checked and rechecked by countless
physicists and mathematicians over the past 35 years,
and have been deemed to constitute a plausible
description of the physical nature of the Big Bang.
However, until this description is supported by
objective physical evidence, it would remain a working
hypothesis. The latter is never the case with faith -
a fact that should be quite obvious to anybody who has
some commitment to possessing a scientific outlook
today.

Cheers,

Santosh

[Goanet]Re: Before and after the Big Bang

2005-05-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Let me preface this post with apologies to all who I may have offended with
my last contributions to this list. It was not my intention to antagonise
you but bring you a different point of view. I will continue to provide my
unabashed opinion on topics I deem fit (without fear of divine retribution)
which have some relevance to Goa and it’s people. What follows should be
general knowledge but I'll throw it out just in case. Any of this can be
verified online.

Scientists have ascertained that all the particulate matter in the universe
exploded from a dense aggregate the size of a baseball billions of years
ago. However, they have not been able to deduce how many Big Bangs there
were before this one which spawned intelligent life on Earth. The universe
is still expanding and at some point in the future (again billions of
years) it will reach a point at which it will start collapsing on itself
again. Humanity as we know it will be just a passing phase in the bigger
picture. Our life spans are briefer that a flashbulb going off! Are we
going to make a difference?

Our preoccupation with unfathomable events seems to dictate the necessity
for a supreme creator. I have heard all the arguments against the fact
that life as we know it today could have started by a random mixing of
amino acids that were able to replicate themselves in an inorganic soup.
However, that is precisely what happened.

The conditions happened to be just right on this third rock from the sun to
allow organic molecules to come together in a reproducible fashion within
the film of surface moisture coating this planet. Comprehending the
geological timeframe involved for this to happen is key to understanding
the mystery of the evolution of life. Initially, strands of amino acids
aggregated probably around deep sea thermal vents in the ocean. They were
then surrounded by a membrane, accumulating organelles and coalescing into
self sustaining unicellular organisms around 3.5 billion years ago. These
self replicating life forms gave rise to every living entity and eventually
multicellular organisms, of which homo sapiens are an integral part. Proof
of this is in DNA evidence linking all life on earth.

Homo sapiens have been around for approx 1.5 million years, early hominids
splitting away from our closest relatives, chimpanzees & bonobo monkeys 5.5
million years ago. These early humans used ONLY stone tools in their
hunting-gathering lifestyle, making their way out of Africa about 150,000
years ago. But around 40,000 years ago, in a 'Great Leap Forward' mankind
suddenly developed more complicated tools, art and habitats. This is
evident from Cro-Magnon settlements in Europe. Modern agriculture and
civilization started with the domestication of wild plants and animals
20-15,000 years ago in the fertile crescent (Mesopotamia) which started us
on this road to civilization. This is the area of the world that has
produced all 3 of the monotheistic religions currently vying for top spot.

Mankind has fanned out over the continents, using the resources available
and decimating the environment in the process. However, within the last
150 years, this consumption of underground resources, primarily fossil
fuels, is changing our atmosphere at an alarming rate. We have the
technology to harness alternate energy sources but our greed is fueling
environmental changes at such a rate that even divine intervention is not
going to be able to help. We’re all on this fragile spaceship together and
the sooner we learn to get along with each other AND THE PLANET, the more
optimistic the future of our progeny.

(about three percent of the population, around
800,000 people) face in the post war occupied country.
The interim constitution states "Islam is the official
religion of the State and is to be considered a source
of legislation" and while recognizing religious
freedom "respects the Islamic identity of the majority
of the Iraqi people." For some, Islamic identity
means the imposition of Muslim morality.

Mario asks:
Aren't the attacks on Christians coming from the Sunni
Baathist insurgents and their "foreign" cohorts who
are desperately trying to derail the nascent democracy
in Iraq? As you say, the new interim Iraqi
constitution is based on an Islamic identity but
recognizes religious freedom. Did you expect anything
different from a country that is 97% Muslim? Are you
inclined to give them a chance, or are you suggesting
we go back to the wonderful secular days of Saddam's
regime when you could get your tongue cut out, or your
wife or daughter raped in front of you at the
slightest provocation?

Maurice writes:
> The irony here, of course, is that Saddam's Iraq was
a secular state, (I mean really secular, not just
namesake), ruled by the Baath Party. The Iraqi
regime, although suspicious of and sometimes brutal
towards the Shiite majority, protected Shiite and
Sunni mosques, Assyrian and Chaldean Christian
churches, and even the sparsely attended Baghdad
synagogue, while forbidding proselytization in
general. Saddam appointed Tariq Aziz, a Christian, to
top posts; Christians had by far the most religious
freedom until Saddam’s fall,
throughout the middle east and similar to Syria,
Jordan and Lebanon. (It was believed Saddam’s food
taster was a Christian).

Mario replies:
Yes, it is ironic that Saddam was secular, and had a
Christian Foreign Minister, yet was willing to
sacrifice another Christian to a potential poisoner.
You seem impressed. Yet, I'm sure you have heard of
the continuing discovery of mass graves filled with
the bones of his political adversaries. And I'm sure
you are following the investigations on the
oil-for-food scandal, where Saddam was looting his own
people, depriving them of food and medicines and
building palaces. In Italy the fascists still pine
for the wonderful days when Mussolini made the trains
run on time.

Maurice writes:
> It is hard to imagine if American imposed democratic
set-up under occupation in Iraq will be successful by
power sharing by three major ethnic communities,
belonging to three different sects of Islam. Pres.
Bush accomplished second term, but for the remainder
of his second term, he will be inclined to be more
attentive to important personal goals before his
term comes to an end. It is to be seen if the foreign
policy that he initiated, would be continued.
Already some countries are becoming bolder, have
even test-fired missiles.

Mario replies:
You say it's "hard to imagine" but it seems you don't
want to imagine a successful democratic Iraqi
government. The American-led coalition deposed Saddam
and made it possible for the Iraqis to experience
freedom and democracy for the first time, and they are
developing their own system without any input from
America other than in security issues. You seem
resentful of this development and pessimistic of its
outcome. Did you feel the same way after WW-II when
there was chaos in Germany and Japan? It took from 4
to 7 years to pacify and democratize those two
countries. Or do you feel that Muslims are different
and cannot handle power sharing among their
communities.

Regarding the countries who are becoming bolder, by
which I suppose you are referring to N. Korea, I
wonder if you have noticed that there are countries in
far more danger from this renegade country than
America, like China, S. Korea, and Japan. Each of
these are quite capable of crushing N. Korea, and
Condi Rice just clarified that the US is quite
prepared to "deter" N. Korea if necessary. In the
meantime 6-party talks will continue.

Perhaps you have overlooked the countries who have
become less "bold", like Libya, and more recently
Syria, for example, which has withdrawn from Lebanon,
and growing sentiment in Egypt and even Saudi Arabia
towards the benefits of elections, which may be the
slippery slope to more freedom for the people.

As the experience of Iraq showed once again, the US
never intervenes until after the UN has failed to
settle a conflict, after passing several resolutions
sanctioning the country in default, and imposing a
final ultimatum. In Iraq's case that was UN
resolution 1441. So be patient. We have a long way
to go with these "bold" countries.

Finally, Maurice, if you prefer the stability of a
brutal dictatorship to the chaos of freedom and
democracy, I think you are in for a lot of heartburn
because the world is moving away from you.

Your view above reminded me of Bertrand Russell's view below:

"Man is the product of causes which had no prevision of the end they were
achieving, that his
origin, his growth, his hopes and fears, his loves and beliefs, are but the
accidental
collocations of atoms, that no fire, no heroism, no intensity of thought, and
feeling, can
preserve an individual life beyond the grave, that all the noonday brightness
of human genius is
destined to extinction in the vast death of the solar system, and the whole
temple of man's
achievement must inevitably be buried beneath a universe in ruins."

Churchill Brothers hold JCT
May 04, 2005 22:50 IST
Churchill Brothers' hopes avoiding relegation suffered a severe blow
despite them coming from behind to hold JCT to a 1-1 draw in the National
Football League match played at Nehru stadium in Goa on Wednesday.

JCT took the lead in the 20th minute through Harvinder Singh but Churchill
fought back and restored parity in the 34th minute through Marcos Pereira.

The draw took Churchill's tally to 22 points from 21 matches and they now
need to win their last matches against Mohun Bagan to avoid relegation.

JCT, who are in sixth place, increased their tally to 28 points from 21
matches.

[Goanet]Martins' brace keeps Dempo on course

2005-05-05 Thread Eustaquio Santimano
Martins' brace keeps Dempo on course
May 05, 2005 20:51 IST
Man-of-the-Match Ranty Martins' double strike guided Federation Cup
champions Dempo to a 2-0 victory over Vasco and closer to the National
Football League title at the Nehru stadium in Margao, Goa, on Thursday.

Vasco started on a promising note and had the first look at their rival's
goal after Anthony Pereira's scorching drive from inside the box hit the
bar, off Kamal Thapa's long pass.

They were again unlucky in not finding the target as Satish Minz's
powerful drive again hit the cross bar.

Dempo, who took some time to settle down, surged ahead in the 25th minute.
On receiving a pass from Riston Rodrigues, Martins directed the ball
towards the target but his shot deflected off a rival defender and rolled
in before another defender, Kamal Thapa, tried to put it out.

Minutes later, Martins scored again when he headed home a cross by Johnny
D'Cruz, a move initiated by Riston Rodrigues.

With this goal, Martins took his individual tally to 17 goals.
The second half was mostly confined to midfield and Martins had a chance
to score a hat-trick but goalkeeper Virender Singh came to Vasco's rescue
as he parried Ranty's shot to safety.

Vasco retaliated and came close to scoring but Sushant Mathews' shot was
put out by 'keeper Satish Kumar.

With this win, Dempo, who are second in the points table, a point behind
leaders Sporting Clube de Goa, took their tally to 44 points from 20
matches and still have two matches to play.

Dempo's crucial match against East Bengal at Kolkata on May 16 will
virtually decide their fate before they play their last match against
Tollygunge.

However, with today's defeat, Vasco confirmed relegation to the second
division along with Tollygunge and SBT.

Vasco are currently placed 10th with 17 points from 21 matches.

[Goanet]Dudu magic keeps Sporting atop

Dudu magic keeps Sporting atop
May 04, 2005 21:14 IST
Two second-half goals enabled Sporting Club de Goa beat lowly-placed State
Bank of Travancore 2-0 and stay on course for the National Football League
title, in Kozhikode on Wednesday.

It was once again the 'Dudu magic' that handed the initiative to the
visitors, now leading the overall points table with 45 points.

Also read: Mahindra United stun East Bengal
In the 52nd minute, captain Dudu Omagbemi neatly guided a corner kick from
Wilton Gomes into the goal to put the Goans ahead.

Eight minutes later Bibiano Fernandes increased the lead after turning in
a header off a Dudu pass as SBT's custodian, Jean Christian, totally
misjudged the move near the goal area.

With this defeat, the bankmen now stand relegated from the league, with
only 15 points and an inconsequential match left against Fransa, the date
for which will be decided later.

The goalless first half, however, belonged to the Kerala team, who played
quite well as usual in the initial stages but failed to score.

Omagbemi, the cynosure of all eyes, came up with many brilliant passes
before finally settling to score the opener himself. The leading scorer in
the League with 21 goals, he was later adjudged the man-of-the-match.

Though SBT tried hard to reduce the margin in the dying moments of the
game by also bringing the in-form Sylvester Ignatius as substitute, they
remained so disorganised that they could not penetrate the formidable
rival defence.

In the interest of providing accurate information in a

highest concern to me, I would like to point out a few
inaccuracies in the otherwise admirable account that
you have offered.

>
>Scientists have ascertained that all the particulate

The starting point of the Big Bang is thought to be
essentially a point with no dimensions, what has been
termed as a space-time singularity, not an aggregate
of the size of a baseball.

>
>The universe is still expanding and at some point in
>the future (again billions of years) it will reach a

Actually, the present understanding based on available
evidence is that the universe will expand forever and
become increasingly sparse, dark and cold. The Big
Crunch scenario is a hypothesis that does not
currently have any observational support.

I would merely say that this is the most plausible
scenario right now, without expressing any degree of
certainty about it. The reason I am saying this is not
merely because of the cautious attitude inherent in
the scientific approach, but also because there indeed
are a set of mind-blowing scientific alternatives to
the above idea. I would be happy to share them with
you privately, if you or anybody else is interested in
knowing what they are.

>
>Homo sapiens have been around for approx 1.5 million

Actually, Homo sapiens emerged only about 200,000
years ago. What you are referring to are our hominid
ancestors. They belonged to other genera such as
Australopithecus afarensis, or other species such as
Homo habilis and Homo erectus. Our oldest hominid
ancestor walked on this earth about 7 million years
ago.

[Goanet]PWD water used in contaminated ice-candy

Contaminated ice-candy affects six
---
Around six persons including five children attending 'Balwadis'
have been admitted to hospital for jaundice after consuming a
local ice-fruit commonly known as 'pepsy'. Residents of
Ameywada-Khandola are facing a tense situation after the
outbreak of jaundice was first detected by doctors at a PHC
at Betki, where the children were admitted after complaining
of stomach pain over the past few days.
Accordingly, samples of the ice-fruit were sent for an analysis
and it was revealed that the ice-fruit contained 'Coliform'
a harmful substance known for causing jaundice. The matter
was reported to the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA)
and on April 30 FDA officials raided two establishments
manufacturing ice-fruits, Vishal Ice Fruit and Bombay Ice Fruit
and stopped their production process. Incidentally, both these
establishments did not possess licences from the FDA.
Locals have alleged that the ice-fruit manufacturers were using
water received from the PWD reservoir situated at Ameywada-
Khandola, which is in a terrible condition. This tank was last
cleaned in 2003 and being on the ground level it faces a threat
of rain water seepage. Water pipelines to the tank are also in
close proximity of toilets and garbage sites. Some of these
pipelines have also developed leaks.
Sources at the PHC in Betki informed that five children and
an adult are being treated for jaundice, with a few even admitted
to Goa Medical College Hospital, Bambolim, as their condition
was critical.
Meanwhile, locals claim that the number of jaundice cases in
Ameywada-Khandola maybe even higher as many are being
treated either in private hospitals or with local ayurvedic treatment.
The locals have requested the authorities to take serious note
of this outbreak and take action accordingly, after past
experiences of outbreak of the disease in the major cities. .

[Goanet]Advice for Priests

2005-05-05 Thread gilbertlaw
Hi Fr. Ivo,

What I have described below is exactly what I and most American doctors do. We
have worked too hard for our careers, our family and our livelihood to let it
do down the drain. Then we cannot blame the misstep on a greedy patient and her
attorney. Our pension plan is on the line. :=)) We have also seen some
doctors loosing their medical license and livelihood for 'crossing the line'.

Forget your love, kindness and respect rhetoric. You can do all of that by
keeping your distance. Love and be concerned about your-self and your Church
first. Your other post today strongly suggest that you "just have not got it"
how serious the US Catholic Church (i.e. us) is both morally and fiscally
becasue of a handful of negligent / careless / criminal priests. Perhaps as a
Goan you do not appreciate what it means for a diocese to declare BANKRUPTCY.
Regards. GL

"Fr. Ivo Da C. Souza"
Gilbert,

I think this is an advice for yourself too!... What is important is to have a
heart prepared to respect the persons. Some precautions are to be taken, but
are your hints feasible? Let all of us ponder and find what is suitable for us.
We are adults...

Ivo da C.Souza

[Goanet]U.K. Elections and the Papers.

2005-05-05 Thread Gabe Menezes
http://news.ft.com/cms/s/8ebd2836-bd3f-11d9-87aa-0e2511c8.html

Polling day - the media verdict
By Fiona Symon
Published: May 5 2005 09:57 | Last updated: May 5 2005 09:57

The two popular newspapers that support Tony Blair's re-election left
no room for doubt among their readers on Thursday with comic
book-style front page images.

The Daily Mirror depicted Michael Howard as a vampire impaled by a
stake with today's date written on it in blood and the slogan: 'Vote
Labour: there's too much at stake'.
And The Sun, seeming to forget its unfortunate history of offending
Liverpool fans, showed Tony Blair and Gordon Brown in red football
shirts on the threshold of Number 10 Downing Street, accompanied by
the slogan: "Come on you reds".
The Daily Mail, which has backed the Conservative party, meanwhile,
chose to ignore polling day on its front page, leading with two
unrelated stories. The Daily Express, which has also declared in
favour of the Tories, depicted Mr Blair as Pinocchio accompanied by:
"Why we don't want to wake up to another five years with Mr Tony
Blair".
Most papers agreed that Tony Blair appeared to be heading for a
historic third term as prime minister, but unlike the popular press,
were unable to muster much enthusiasm for any of the contenders.
The Financial Times, which has endorsed the government, said that if
Blair wins a third term as predicted in the polls, he owes a massive
debt of gratitude to the chancellor, Gordon Brown, who has
consistently scored higher with the public on trust and credibility
than Mr Blair.
But the partnership "re-forged in the heat of the election campaign"
faces daunting challenges. Difficult policy decisions postponed until
after the election could reopen divisions and the chancellor could
face problems with public finances unless tax revenues rebound, the
paper said.
The Times, which has also endorsed Labour, declared in an editorial
that it had been an uninspiring campaign, but that this was no excuse
for abstaining from the vote. Although polls were predicting another
substantial majority for the Labour party in the House of Commons,
there was some evidence of a move away from the government in the
final days of the campaign, adding: "Mr Blair will be more than a
little anxious."
The Guardian, while lamenting that the election had been organised
overwhelmingly for the benefit of swing voters in marginal
constituencies, nevertheless said the picture was not unrelentingly
gloomy. "It may have been a joyless campaign, but the national debate
has been intense," it said.
In a Guardian feature article, Simon Schama, the US-based academic,
celebrated "the spectacle of all three parties campaigning on their
own particular plans for fine tuning the welfare state", which he said
was "enough to fill the neutered American opposition with envious
despair."
"As for the Monster Raving Loony party, in the US, they would be in a
secure holding facility, not munching ham sandwiches 10 feet away from
the Leader," said Mr Schama.
But the conspicuous absence of the one campaign helper without whose
assistance no American candidate can possibly hope to prevail, namely
God, was "most wondrous of all".

[Goanet]GOAN ATHLETE IN KUWAIT.

2005-05-05 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes
GOAN ATHLETE IN KUWAIT.
Amongst Goans in Kuwait involved in soccer activities at Sour Grounds,
everyone will know a Goan called Hipolito Fernandes, a member UFC soccer
club and hailing from Mobor Cavelosim in Goa. He is a long timer in Kuwait,
a soft hearted person and ever willing to to social work. He is popularly
known as Dotor at Sour Grounds since he is always very vigilant to provide
first - aid to any injured player. Many times people see him at Sour Ground
with his Medical First Aid Kit and he is volunteering to assist any injured
player. He is a great lover of sports in general and soccer in particular.
His well known athlete daughter Melissa Q. Fernandes is currently in Kuwait
visiting her father. During the soccer final match last Friday between
Bombay Boys and Navelim at Sour Ground for G.O.A. Cup, where Melissa
attended the final, I had an opportunity to meet her and know more of her.
Of course I was glad to know of her calibre at this young age in sports in
Goa.

Melisa currently creates solid impact of her prowess in the sporting arena
in Goa. An student of Chowgule College in Margao, this 17 years old girl got
lot of laurels to her credit. Currently she is one of the best Basket-ball
players in Goa. Last year she was declared best promising player of Goa
under 17 by Club National & Goa Basketball Association and also declared
this year in February as best player of Goa under 17 by Goa Basketball
Association. Earlier as an student of Fatima Convent Margao, she captained
the school Basket-Ball team and won State level championship in 2003 and
2004 and both the times declared as highest scorer .

In Jan 2003 she represented Goa in the 53rd Senior Basket-ball Championship
at Hyderabad; in October 2003 in 20th Youth Senior Basket-ball Championship
at Himachal Pradesh and in November 2003 in Mother Veronica Inter-School
Basket-ball Tournament at New Delhi. In 2004 she captained Goa Senior
Basket-ball team that played in Andra Pradesh.

Melisa is also a very good athlete, her forte lies in running long and
middle distance races. At Salcette Taluka level two years back she won
first places in 400 metres and 800 mtres races, 2nd place in 1500 metres
and 3rd place in high jump while last year she at South Goa level won 2nd
place in 800 metres, 3rd place in 400 metres and 2nd place in 1500 metres.

In appreciation of her achievement in the sporting field at this tender age,
Lions Club of Cavelosim felicitated her in 2003 and in 2004 Santa Cruz Club
of Cavelossim awarded her a Certificate of Life Time Achievement in the
Field of Sports.

In Kuwait Goans are doing lot of sporting activities. Why not a single club
individually or jointly do something for this young Goan girl who is showing
lot of enthusiasm in the field of Sports? By recognising her sporting
talents we can rightly give an added booster for her to do more and bring
the name of Goa and Goans up not only in Goa and India but also at
international level? She will be here in Kuwait for a brief period and
shortly she will be back in Goa to pursue her further studies.

On behalf of myself and all my like minded friends and colleagues I wish
Melisa all the best and hope she will acquire highest distinction in the
field of sports and she will fly the colours of Goa higher and higher.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

[Goanet]Darwin on trial!

 By Carey Gillam
TOPEKA, Kan. (Reuters) - A six-day courtroom-style debate opened on
Thursday in Kansas over what children should be taught in schools
about the origin of life -- was it natural evolution or did God create
the world?
The hearings, complete with opposing attorneys and a long list of
witnesses, were arranged amid efforts by some Christian groups in
Kansas and nationally to reverse the domination of evolutionary theory
in the nation's schools.
William Harris, a medical researcher and co-founder of a Kansas group
called the Intelligent Design Network, posed the core question about
life's beginnings before mapping out why he and other Christians want
changes in school curriculum.
School science classes are teaching children that life evolved
naturally and randomly, Harris said, arguing that this was in conflict
with Biblical teachings that God created life.
"They are offering an answer that may be in conflict with religious
views," Harris said in opening the debate. "Part of our overall goal
is to remove the bias against religion that is currently in schools.
This is a scientific controversy that has powerful religious
implications."
Conservative groups are trying to convince state education officials
to change guidelines for how evolution theory is taught in science
classes at a time when Kansas education authorities are producing new
science teaching guidelines.
The hearings -- organized by a committee of the Kansas Board of
Education -- were taking place 80 years after the so-called "Monkey
Trial" of John Scopes, a Tennessee biology teacher who was found
guilty of illegally teaching evolution.
There is renewed debate over evolution in more than a dozen U.S.
states and a resurgence across the nation in the influence of
religious conservatives, who played an important part in the
reelection of Republican President Bush last year.
TEACHERS AND PREACHERS
The Kansas hearing drew a large crowd that included students, teachers
and preachers. National and local scientific leaders for the most part
boycotted the event.
Pedro Irigonegaray, a lawyer defending evolution in the debate, said
he planned to call no witnesses, though he did cross-examine
witnesses, sometimes combatively.
Harris acknowledged under questioning that there were many people who
saw no incompatibility between religious beliefs that God created life
and evolutionary teachings about how life evolved through natural
processes.
Outside the hearing room, outraged scientists challenged the validity
of the hearings. "This is a showcase trial," said Jack Krebs, vice
president for Kansas Citizens for Science. "They have hijacked science
and education."
Ken Schmitz, a University of Missouri/Kansas City chemistry professor
attending the hearing said he worried that the attack on evolution
could confuse students and endanger their ability to excel in science.
"They are not going to understand this," said Schmitz.
Changes to the curriculum proposed by the conservatives would not
require inclusion of Biblical beliefs in science classes, also called
"creationism" - the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1987 that creationism
could not be taught in public schools alongside evolution.
But they would involve questioning the principles of evolution as
explanations for the origins of life, the universe and the genetic
code. As well, teachers would be encouraged to discuss with students
"alternative explanations."
Kansas has been struggling with the issue for years, capturing
worldwide attention in 1999 when the state school board voted to
downplay Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in science classes.
Subsequent elections altered the membership of the board and led to
renewed backing for evolution instruction in 2001. But elections last
year gave conservatives a 6-4 majority and the board is now producing
new science teaching guidelines

[Goanet]RE: Gilbert's sound Advice for Priests

2005-05-05 Thread jose colaco
Dear Gilbert,
Well said.
I note that jest and ridicule that has been heaped upon your sound
suggestion.

I temporarily step out of my self imposed No-Debate moratorium to support
you on this point. Never mind the ridiculous hair-splitting, 2 feet, 20 feet
whatever I hope folks understand the reasoning of your advice.

The basic advice is sound. It is one which all physicians (hopefully) use in
the practise of medicine.

If we do not, we have NO protection against BOGUS accusations.
I refer you back to my position on the Ribandar case which Lawyer Aires
Rodrigues still refuses to call as ALLEGED. ( all but once - if my memory
serves right)

I had suggested then, and I suggest again. Confessions should NOT be heard
in private. They should be heard in the presence of a witness (through a
sound-proof glass barrier). So that NO ONE again accuses a priest wrongly of
TOUCHING someone else. esp 8 months after the alleged incident!

I wish to reiterate my knowledge that PRIESTS and PHYSICIANS (like others in
position) are special targets of certain women and of Lawyers with
additional agendae!

Physicians have learnt the hard way - Time for priests to learn a bit about
life in the 21st century.

There is of course, NO protection against real abuse; and there will always
be real abusers everywhere. They should be dealt with.

Forget your love, kindness and respect rhetoric. You can do all of that by
keeping your distance. Love and be concerned about your-self and your Church

Subject: HUMILITY PRAYER

Dear Lord please,

Deliver me from the compulsive habit of thinking I must always have something
to say on every subject on every occasion. Release me from the craving of
trying to straighten out everyone's business.

Restrain my mouth from the recital of boring, endless and pointless details
and give me wings to get to the point. And though I dare not ask for grace
enough to enjoy the tales of others, help me endure them with patience and
tolerance.

Give me reasonable doubt and less cock sureness when my memory and viewpoint
seem to clash with those of an opposite opinion.

Teach me the glorious lesson that sometimes I may be wrong.

Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected places and talent in
unexpected people. Give me the grace to tell them so.

Help me to be reasonably good, honest, cheerful, but not a saint (because we
all know some of them are too hard to live with).

Teach me to be thoughtful but not moody, helpful but not bossy, observing but
not critical. And with my vast store of self-proclaimed wisdom, it seems a
shame not to use all up, but please remember, Lord, I want a few friends left
at the end.

So teach me to be ever grateful and let me never forget your grace and the
help of others.

Amen.

UP Close and Personal : ABBEY

- By Nisha Braganza, The Times Staff Reporter

The Indian Carnival 2005, held at the Shaab Leisure Park organized by the Hot
Steppers on the 15th of April, was where Abbey performed for the second time
in Kuwait. The event witnessed huge audiences, captivated by the mesmerizing
voice of this talented performer. Abbey said, he has always had a good time in
Kuwait doing shows, his earlier performance being at the India Day held at the
Entertainment City, Doha, around 3 years back. “Kuwait is a place I would love
to visit more often, I have a lot of friends here and it’s a great to be here”.

Hailing from Goa, Singer Abbey Fizardo, grew up hearing his mother sing
Konkani folk and dramas. “She’s much bigger to me in the industry”. He said
his mother deserves all credit for laying the foundation of his career in
music. Having Directors and other screen people coming home and often visiting
the studio, took away his fear of the microphone. She has been the one who
really encouraged and supported him throughout. His dad, Abbey said, is very
far from singing, he works with the Oman Army as a civil engineer. Abbey lived
most of his life in Mumbai, where he had neighbors from Punjab, Gujarat,
Bengal. Being exposed to diverse cultures, he had an opportunity to learn a
lot of Indian languages and is today literally the first Goan who has
blossomed into a fluent Indian pop star.

However, Abbey’s struggle up the ladder was not easy. He started off as a
singer in Pubs and restaurants with his guitar and mouth organ and used to
earn his pocket money during his college days. Studied music ? – “Not really.
I just picked up the guitar and somebody started teaching it to me informally.
>From then, I just kept learning on my own. I just kept listening, reading and
learning”. Abbey is a fine example of what they say, ‘starting from
scratch’. “I used to go to companies with my demos, they didn’t react, didn’t
even open the doors for me”. After a two year’s struggle, he took up sound
engineering and on completion, worked as an assistant for about a year. By the
end of two years he was a full-fledged recordist. His big break happened when
working with Sukhwinder Singh, who heard Abbey’s demo, approached a company
and signed him up. Thereafter, was released one of the best videos of
yesteryears “ Aye Sanam”, where Director , Sanjay Gupta broke visual ground
with the video and made a sensation out of singer, Abbey.

His second album, Fidaa, he said , didn’t work too well because there was a
sponsor involved and they wanted their logos on the video. But he was back
again, with his third album Yaron Ka Yaar, on which he worked with Sukhwinder
Singh and Jassi. Abbey likes to sing everything, Reggae, Rock , Pop, such that
no two songs sound the same. A rare combination that Abbey does is sings
ghazals with the guitar. After smelling stardom and thousands of fans, seldom
do we find stars so relaxed and down to earth, infact this is how he says
it “underground” !!

The fact that he has worked as a recordist helps him a lot now, said
Abbey.“There are so many technicalities in making a simple song. Now I can
record my own song. From singing till mastering my own cassette, I can do it
on my own. I know what sound I want.”.

Besides his passion for music, Abbey is crazy about wildlife. He owns a
farmhouse and spends long hours with his pet goats, ducks, rabbits, fowls,
dogs and even snakes! Boating and exploring the waters is another hobby that
fascinates him. Somewhere down the line, he plans to do something for a human
cause, probably open an orphanage or a home for the aged. He’s also working on
a plan to open a casual dining restaurant in Kuwait, likely to be named “
Abbey’s”.

The aspect that makes Abbey stand out from the other singers is his on stage
performance and the ability to grip the audience in his sway. He doesn’t enjoy
doing shows where he cannot let loose as in a concert.” You can’t expect
people to come and stand there for hours and watch you jump around. I would
rather stand there and make them jump around”. He has been in the music
industry for around seven years, and criticism, he said , doesn’t bother him.
Abbey has performed at many shows in India and the Gulf. He mentioned that in
India, an artist lives on his shows; album sales are often eaten away because
of high piracy. Even a top artist can sell at the most two lakh cassettes,
rarely more.

Now a married man, Abbey has decided t

substance known for causing jaundice. The matter was reported to the Food

establishments manufacturing ice-fruits, Vishal Ice Fruit and Bombay Ice

and stopped their production process. Incidentally, both these

Locals have alleged that the ice-fruit manufacturers were using water
received from the PWD reservoir situated at Ameywada-Khandola, which is in a
terrible condition. This tank was last cleaned in 2003 and being on the
ground level it faces a threat of rain water seepage. Water pipelines to the

pipelines have also developed leaks.>

Dear GoaCan,
Thank You for the good work you are doing. The dissemination of this
information, hard as it is to digest, is important.

Over the past several decades, Goa has become increasingly filthy. Those
among us who cried hoarse about the level of filth which was permitted, were
greeted by comments like : Welcome to India, You are caught up in a pre-1961
time warp, You must come and live here - Then only you can talk, We live
here and we don't see what you see etc.

Well.welcome to reality.
So then, how did this happen? My answer is because Goans allowed it to
happen.

Way back when I was a student at GMC, I wrote an article on the GoMeCo
wallpaper about the filthy state of our wards, and of cats and dogs spending
time (at night) in the children's ward. I remember being hauled up to the
Dean ID Bajaj's office and requested - "please remove that photograph. what
will happen if the newspapers find out"?

Ah well the sad reality is that the Press in Goa (never mind that
saffron appointee Rajesh Singh) never really behaved as a news organisation.

It was always about Money and How to make more money. And the Goa Journos
behaved (and still do minus a few) with that ethic (if one can use that
word in this context).

So.except for a few brave souls, there was (and still is) precious
little Investigative Journalism. And a lot of "hammer Catholics, Jesuits and
the Portuguese".

After allit is easy.
BTW: Have you noticed HOW much is being written now that there is NO
political party in power? Please remember to compare today with next month
when the BJP return to power.

The second reason for this fiasco is the Alibaba syndrome. Right from the
days of Bandodkar, successive PWD ministers have made Poixe over Poixe.

And you know how many Poixe have been swiped?
Are you surprised at the state of Water in Goa?
Xhutes..this must really be what Paradise is all about.
Next in line are members of the Health Profession. Chaps ! what exactly are
you doing about this situation? I know . but besides making
Poixewhat else are you doing? You visit these eateries, notice how
filthy they are and do NOTHING about it?

You have NOTHING to say to your colleagues in the Public Health department?
What's wrong with you guys?

(BTW: I am waiting for this so called GoMeCo guys. Socials, Parties, Get
togethers and 5 Star First World Tertiary medicine is finewhat about
Primary Health Care, CleanWater and Cleanliness. If that is on your agenda,
I am with you. If Not. I'll say cheers)

Finally, there are the Goan voters.
They believed those "brilliant" Freedom Fighters (real and fake) and now
they are continuing to believe these alleged Journos and their masters i.e.
the Press Owners and the Alibabas.

Ah well

The presence of these bacteria in drinking water is generally a result of a

As long as the "mathematical description" remains

"Several weeks ago I submitted to the Editor

might well disturb atheists of the more positive kind.
The point more relevant here was that it can be
entirely rational for believers and negative atheists

We negative atheists are bound to see the Big Bang
cosmology as requiring a physical explanation; and
that one which, in the nature of the case, may
nevertheless be forever inaccessible to human beings.
But believers may, equally reasonably, welcome the Big
Bang cosmology as tending to confirm their prior
belief that "in the beginning" the Universe was
created by God."

[Goanet]UGDP's Benaulim nominee is Monte Cruz

UGDP’s Benaulim nominee is Monte Cruz

NT News Service www.navhindtimes.com

Margao May 4, 2005: The United Goans Democratic Party today announced that the
former sports minister and UGDP president, Mr Monte Cruz would be the party
candidate for the by-elections from the Benaulim constituency.

Making this announcement at a hurriedly convened press conference, the party
general secretary, Mr Anacleto Viegas with other party leaders in tow
said, “The party has as of now only decided on the candidate for the Benaulim
seat, based of the feedback received from the electorate of the constituency.”

The party president and candidate from Benaulim, Mr Monte Cruz stated that he
was confident of victory and informed that workers of the Congress party were
also rallying behind him to ensure his victory. “My good work will count,” he
added.

To a query whether he was being supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Mr
Cruz remarked, “the BJP candidate for the last elections, Ms Laxmi Gonsalves
is canvassing for the NCP. This clearly indicates a hidden pact between the
two parties.”

The former minister who as a Congress MLA is credited to have built the Nehru
Stadium at Fatorda in record six-month time told reporters that the Congress
had meted out injustice to him in spite of his good record and the development
carried out by him as MLA and minister.

“The party ticket was given to Mr Churchill Alemao, in spite of me defeating
him,” Mr Cruz revealed. The vice-president of the party, Mr Radharao Gracias
disclosed that the UGDP’s main priority would be to defeat the BJP. “We will
not help the BJP in coming back to power,” he said.

When asked about the UGDP putting up a candidate against erstwhile United
Legislature Party member — the NCP, Mr Gracias explained that it was the
party’s aim to defeat the BJP during government formation.

“When the BJP government led by Mr Manohar Parrikar was ousted, the NCP’s role
was doubted. It was not a part of the ouster programme,” he revealed adding
that the NCP came into the picture only when Mr Pratapsingh Rane became the
chief minister.

As for Ms Jeniffer Monserrate, the wife of former town and country planning
minister, Mr Atanasio Monseratte, who is vice-president of the party, it was
told that she never took charge of the post at all. Those who attended the
press conference included Ms Auda Viegas, general secretary, Mr Prashant Naik
and Mr Shravan Dubashi.

The Cortalim MLA, Mr Mathany Saldanha, who was invited, did not turn up. The
UGDP president has been a two-time MLA from Benaulim in the early eighties and
defeated the present South Goa MP, Mr Churchill Alemao in 1980.

In the last assembly elections, Mr Monte Cruz was defeated by Mr Damu Naik of
the BJP, who polled 5,695 votes. In the three-cornered fight, that also had Mr
Luis Alex Cardoso fighting on the Congress ticket, Mr Cruz polled around 3,900
votes. Having started his career from the grassroot level, Mr Cruz has also
been the past president of the All-Goa Toddy Tappers Association.

This one is worth reading.

EDITORIAL
A Few Good Words of Bad News
Los Angeles Times Headlines

The admission by the nation's top general that the
demands of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are hurting
U.S. military readiness indicates that common sense
continues to have its place. The blunt honesty of the
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Richard B.
Myers, is a bracing change from repeated claims by
Pentagon civilians and President Bush that everything
is fine.

Myers reported to Congress this week that the armed
forces would have more trouble this year than last in
quickly winning a new major combat operation and would
suffer higher casualties. That's a realistic
reflection of the cost of tying up 140,000 troops,
more than 10% of U.S. active-duty forces, in Iraq even
as recruiting lags substantially. It also contrasts
with Bush's statement at his press conference last
week that when he asks Myers about strains on
readiness the general says he "doesn't feel we're
limited" and the military has "plenty of capacity."

The troops are having problems. The proposed Pentagon
budget for the next fiscal year is $420 billion. Add
in supplemental spending for Iraq and Afghanistan and
it's about half a trillion dollars. Such enormous
amounts of money have not bought security for the road
from the Baghdad airport to downtown or information on
the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden or his acolyte in
Iraq, Abu Musab Zarqawi.

As for recruitment and reenlistment, a Denver
television station reported last week that Army
recruiters told a 17-year-old student (pretending to
be a high school dropout with a drug problem) to lie
about his background so he could enlist. All of it was
right there on video. An Army officer said two
recruiters were suspended and the allegations were
being investigated, but recruiters elsewhere have told
of being pressured to break the rules to bring in
enlistees.

Myers' annual report concluded that the U.S. military
would win any combat operation, but one official said,
"We would have to win uglier." That's shorthand for
more destruction and civilian casualties.

Myers' conclusion does not indicate a greater threat
to this country, but it points to a more protracted
and expensive campaign if hostilities break out
elsewhere. For all the emphasis in recent years on
unmanned aircraft and high-tech weapons, the problems
of Afghanistan and Iraq should remind U.S.
administrations of the bottom line for armies: feet on
the ground. Precision-guided missiles are all but
useless against improvised explosive devices at the
side of the road and are of no use at all in building
democratic institutions.

Joe,
Unfortunately majority of Goans prefer to elect jumping frogs. These
jumping frogs get elected over and over again. And then the "Natak"
begins all over again. And who is to be blamed for this is the selfish
Goans who at this time are in majority who elect these very people.
There are lots of questions we ask.
Why can't Congress put up honest Catholic candidates?
Why there are no Clean Catholic Leaders elected? In the past,
especially during the 60's, we had Catholic leaders who were not
corrupt.
What has happened now and why?
Why are the present generation of Catholic politicians corrupt?
Why can't Catholic church oppose corruption? Are the priest corrupt too?
Why can good honest people get elected? Is it because selfish corrupt
people are in majority?
Cry O' my beloved Goa, why do you need to suffer?

Mog asundi,
Carlos
