[Goanet] NEED TO PROFILE CHURCHILL
Churchill's claims over Dabolim airport As a candidate for the South Goa Parliamentary Constituency, Churchill had promised to ensure that the present domestic airport at Dabolim continues to function and thus ensure that the lifeline of the people of the coastal belt, who thrive on the tourism trade is not affected. By putting up a spirited defence in Parliament, Churchill has managed to achieve this and ensure that Charters are allowed to land on Fridays, which was never allowed in the past. The resultant unprecedented increase in charter tourism is a proof of this move.[FN, May 2005 Willie, a casteist? What BULL! Churchill Alemao (who is a Chardo, but with a far greater sub-altern image in part explained by a poor education due to a difficult childhood) is seen as having the old-school Catholic [FN, June 2005] It might be useful to have a full fledged profile on Churchill Alemao (as we have had on other leading Goans). Alternatively, if someone can shed some light on Churchill's recent somersault whereby he has dramatically ditched his position (as recently as August 2005 in Parliament) of Mopa is OK if Dabolim continues in favour of putting his party affiliation rebelliously on the line if Mopa is not stopped! P.S. Apropos the credit for letting charter flights land on Fridays, who gets the blame for introduction of civilian flight restrictions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1900-2130? I dont think this was there earlier.

Hello ; This mail is cent percent right and Mr. Helekar has given a perfect example of Malyalees who no matter where they are, speak Malayalam. whenever I get a chance to speak in Konkani no matter to whom and how broken my grammar is , I speak it because it is my birthright and honestly I am not ashamed to speak my language. What is wrong with us Goans? We are missing the basic threads of communication with other Goans outside Goa... Atleast Mr. Helekar brought it to our Notice. [Goanet] IS INDIA SPLITABLE?
IS INDIA SPLITABLE? Why not? Surely yes, if the trend of communalism, corruption, looting and indiscipline by the politicians, influential persons and goondas do not stop. Why India only? For that matter any other country is splitable however mighty and lengthy it may be; however powerful and deadly it may be. Who ever thought that the mighty Atomic and Hydrogen power, super power, Soviet Russia would split in early 1990 after about 70 years rule of communist dictatorship there? Who ever thought Titos Yugoslavia would beak-up? These are the things which can happen suddenly and at any moment and the reason for this only the people living in these countries know better even though outside force can also play an important role in the break-up of any country including India however much I may deslike it. It is not my wish to see India splitted but that India as it exists now under one entity gives rise to different opinions. The present India is not what it was; it is brought under one entity by using different method even against the wishes of Indians. The founders of present India were always aware of the wishes of the people of India that they are splitable and they dont want to be under somebody, they want to be their own bodies without outside influence to protect their own culture, language, traditions, history and everything that they inherit from their ancestry. This inherent trend of Indians was very well analysed by the founding fathers of India and precisely because of this the founding fathers of India made Centre a very strong body whose powers at any moment can clip the wings of any Indian region. In India introducing Central rule anywhere in India can easily cut the trend of cessation move. This is the reason the genuine federalism does not exist in India, instead quasi federalism exists. India externally looks federal but in reality it is a sort of unitary. Indian leaders are shouting at the top of their voices the attainment of progress in this field and in that field but actually in India people are not that happy as it is projected. The benefits of the reforms and new legislations rarely reach to the downtrodden. Millions of young people with excellent educational background aspiring for jobs in India are turned frustrated for non-fulfillment of their dreams. India is currently ruled by goondas because parallel Government machineries are running in all the states, these machineries are illegal organizations headed by local Dadas who are capable of doing anything anytime and any where by using foul means. These illegal machineries are more powerful than Government machineries. These are mafia type of organizations controlling India, even Government officials and Ministers are afraid of them. The law and order situation is bankrupt in India. Money and goonda power can overpower any law, law-abiding citizens are made fools and lawbreakers are rewarded and awarded. Bribery is become routine and accepted norm to get your job done. Voters are bribed to elect their representatives and without bribe nothing is moving. To get an ordinary job you have to sell out lakhs of rupees as bribes and to get your children admitted into professional institutions you have to bribe in much much more. Money is become God and if you have no sufficient money you are kept backward. In all these only the poor person is sufferer. The number of these sufferers is day by day increasing and multiplying to the point when it reaches to saturation level then there will be revolution in India. In this revolution the neglected will fight against the privileged creating all round chaos in India where survival of the fittest will be the only solution. In this scenario we will have the situation like that of Russian Revolution and similarities of French revolution will also be seen where very many Marie Antoinettes will have to sacrifice their heads. Do we want this? No, I dont want this to happen. I want India to be blessed and safe not only for the current Indians but also for the future generations. To happen this the current policies and happenings in India where you find communalism, corruption, indiscipline and disorder, should change and this change should be for the good of common Indian. Otherwise India will face splitable situation, which I dont want to happen. People are frustrated in India and they are purposedly kept in this state by their leaders. These people will surely revolt leading to violent revolution. Currently communalism is the biggest threat for the unity of India. Earlier India was splitted only because of communalism and if the present trend of communalism unleashed by RSS-Shiv Sena-BJP and other such parties do not come to an end then the base for the further split of India will have more weight. Minorities are living in fear in India. Kushwant Singh said after Operation Blue Star that

Re: [Goanet] What non-Americans think?
--- Gilbert Lawrence [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Victor, I could not read the attachment that may have attached to your posting. However if you will bear with me, I would like to respond to what the headline of your post suggest. Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster exacerbated by human miscalculations. It realy does not matter what others think of Americans. It matters what we Americans think of ourselves and what we do about it. Mario responds: You have made excellent points, Gilbert, and the response after the initial chaos has been typical of America and Americans. The political response from the rest of the world has also been typical, from some, immediate offers of assistance, from others, gloating over what they see as another opportunity to attack the US and President Bush. As you must have seen in the world media, as well as the left-wing media in the US, many are using the response as a political weapon against President Bush, by deliberately pretending this is a top-down dictatorship, without any knowledge or understanding of the federal system of government, and who exactly was responsible, by law, at every level. For example, only Fox News has reported that it took TWO personal phone calls from the President to Governor Blanco before she reluctantly agreed to declare the state of emergency on the Sunday before Katrina struck. How many people know that the President cannot, by law, intervene in a state short of an act of insurrection by the local Governor? I saw the head of the American Red Cross say in an interview that they, as well as FEMA and the Salvation Army, were prevented from going to the Superdome and the Convention Center the day after the levees broke, by State of Louisiana authorities. Why? Because they wanted to discourage people from staying at these places. In the meantime, the Mayor was yelling his head off for help, after he had forgotten his own mandatory evacuation order for the 25% of people who did not evacuate Nawlins, and hundreds of school and city buses, that could have been used, sat idle. The race baiters got into the act because many of the victims in Nawlins were black. The fact is that with a 70% black population and 75% pre-hurricane evacuation rate, many more blacks had evacuated than those who stayed, for various reasons, which covered the spectrum from apathy to outright carelessness to illness age and disability. This last group were the real victims of the failures of leadership. How many people know from only seeing what happened in downtown Nawlins on their TV screens that there was a 50 mile by 1/2 mile swath of total destruction along the MS coast and part of the AL coast, with little loss of life because most of the people had evacuated, and almost all the property owners there were white? How many Americans, forget the ignorant Europeans, know that there is an Orleans Levee Board whose sole responsibility was the safety of the levees that have protected Nawlins for over 300 years. Filled with political hacks appointed by the Mayor and Governor, this Board had the power to raise funds through tax exempt bonds to upgrade the levees. Instead they had invested in casinos and commercial development projects. Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana (LA) has been one of the most strident national politicians trying to blame the President. She needs to be careful. Unless one is familiar with LA politics, one would not know from her comments that she and her family have dominated Nawlins politics for decades like the Kennedys have in MA. Her father used to Mayor for years, her brother is the Lt. Governor right now. Yet she has not introduced a single bill in congress to address the problems of the levees in her state, and neither has her family taken a leadership role in this brewing issue of the inadequate levees in the state itself. Not many people know that President Bush was asked by the Governor of MS, Haley Barbour, NOT to come down to the disaster area until AFTER the emergency search and rescue operations had been substantially accomplished, because he and his entourage would just divert attention from saving lives. But you are absolutely right. The only good that ever comes out of a screw-up is that it should never be repeated again. Let us hope the political opportunists will be suppressed by cooler heads and Nawlins will rise again, safer and more charismatic than before.

Re: [Goanet] FLOREAN VAZ - The first martyr of Konkani language!
I was in college in Goa when this teenager was shot and killed by the Central Reserve Police Force, right by his house on the Borda (Margao) - Curtorim road. I clearly remember, visiting his family and attending his funeral, just two or three days before Christmas in 1986. This was a time, when Goa was going through a tumultous phase, to get recognition for Konkanni as its official state language. While its a nice thing to have an official language and possibly, enforce its use in government correspondence and other cultural matters, I do not remain convinced that its beneficial to teach every subject in the first four grades in Konkanni. Imagine the shock this can create, when kids going into fifth grade, suddenly have to switch to English !!! I believe kids in Goa ought to learn Konkanni as just one of the languages. The rest of the subjects should be taught in English - just like the way, I went through schooling, when I was a kid and raised in Goa. The Konkanni medium schooling has created such a mess, that almost all well-to-do Goans, now send their kids to private schools, where they teach English medium right from get go. Ofcourse, Konkanni is also taught, but as one of the languages. This has created a situation where those parents who cannot afford to send their kids to private schools, are left to learn - ek ... dhon ... theen ... humprey Augutin ... Jim F. [Goanet] CHOVOTH -- felicitation of POWER MINISTER DIGAMBER KAMAT
Politicians -- in Goa have reached disgraceful levels. Not content with seeing themselves on the print and visual media they have now started using religious functions as well. What has irked the well meaning people of Margao is the felicitation of Mr Digamber Kamat INC MLA of Margao (who won by a measely margin of 1340 odd votes (the website goagovt.nic.in - link of Goa Legislative Assembly gives a wrong figure) despite being a four term MLA against a 27 year old novice ) at the hands of Chief Minister Mr Pratapsing Raoji Rane ---at a Sarvajanik (Community) Ganeshostav Mandal - Colmorod Margao on 11th September, 2005 This is a total misuse of a religious and cultural celebrations intended to promote charitable social and community affairs -- surely not a political celebration. What was also surprising is that the Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council the first citizen of this city Ms Dorris Texeira graced the ocassion with another Councillor in tow Mr Savio Coutinho. Mr Kamat had developed a penchant for giving a religious touch to all that he does. Earlier he earned the sobriquet NAAL KAMAT while hobnobbing with the BJP breaking a coconut inaugurating road asphalting works, installing high mast lamps etc; Now he prefers to carry this practice even in the Indian National Congress; and perhaps set a precedent. Not only this, he has come out a pocket size booklet with the name of GOA PRADESH CONGRESS and the image of Lord Ganesha printed on the front cover with his message and photograph inside carrying arti sangraha Are you listening Mr Ravi Sitaram Naik MLA Ponda and President Goa Pradesh Congress Committee? There is no doubt that Digambers popularity is dwindling ever since the suffocating theory propped by him to betray and defect from the BJP. Unfortunately his dream to be the Chief Minister or Deputy Chief Minister has been dashed to the ground. Knowing that he has to turn the apple cart before May 2007 or in the event a midterm poll is announced after the IFFI he is trying to hold woo the electorate of Margao with brain storming or washing sessions with lunch dinner all found at the drop of a hat and this Ganesh Chathurti was one such ocassion. Surprisingly Mr Rane did not realise that this was setting a bad precedent. Anyway it is clear that Mr Kamat days are on the wane, and no matter what he does he will slowly but surely fade into oblivion It is time politicians stand forewarned not to mix RELIGION WITH POLITICS GODFREY J I GONSALVES Borda Margao Goa [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Yahoo! [Goanet] By pass surgery can bypass with simple method
Mogall Goemcars, Below mail has been doing the rounds recently. I am not in medical profession n hence not able to say if its true...However after calling up this Doctor, he confirmed that its Calation Therapy and its a miraculous theory. I m sure my goemcar doctors will have something to say... Regards Edward Verdes ++ Subject: by pass surgery can bypass with simple method Friends, This is a new theory which has come to my knowledge very recently and I thought that I should also share with you all. A few days back my Father in law was admitted in a nursing home due to severe chest pain. He had an attack in 1997 and was undergoing normal treatment. Due to the sudden pain just 15 days back we once again got him admitted in a private nursing home at Kandivli. The doctors later suggested for Angiography. We conducted the Angiography at Hinduja Hospital and knew from the reports that he has multiple blockages . The doctor told that he cannot undergo Angioplasty due to several blockages but suggested By -Pass Surgery. The same day evening we bought him home since the doctor suggested that his heart is very weak and we can perform the by-pass only after 15 - 20 days. In the mean time we were discussing this issue with our relatives and friends, we got this new information from one of our family friends. There is a new therapy in the market which is known as:- Chelation Therapy. Or Calation Therapy. According to this therapy any patient who has to undergo by-pass need not undergo the same. The patient is given approx. 18 bottles of blood wherein some medicines are injected alongwith it. The blood cleans the system and removes all the blockages from the heart. The no. of bottles may increase depending upon the age factor and health of the patient. The cost of the blood per bottle would be approx. Rs. 2,500/-. The treatment takes approx.1 month of time. There are only 4 doctors in India and one of them is Dr.Dhananjay Shah at Malad (Mumbai) another at Karnataka. He has a list of patients who had to undergo by-pass from Lilavati,Hinduja and other major hospitals but after undergoing the above treatment they are absolutely fine and leading a normal life. I give below the Doctors details for your info:-Dr.Dhananjay Shah. (Disp): 2889 2089 Mob: 9819439657 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[Goanet] Goa: Trouble brewing within Cong over constitution of GPCC
Trouble brewing within Cong over constitution of GPCC BY HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, SEPT 11 — Ravi Naik may have asserted his authority as the president of the party in constituting the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) but trouble seems to be brewing. The South Goa MP Churchill Alemao on Sunday reacted angrily to the constitution of PCC and Pradesh Election Committee announced by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) yesterday in New Delhi. “I am very unhappy over the manner in which the constitution (of PCC) has been done”, Alemao said firing the first salvo. “I am an elected leader of a parliamentary constituency consisting of 21 assembly constituencies but I have not been consulted on the constitution of PCC”, Alemao charged taking up cudgels against Ravi Naik. The other reason for his outburst is also the inclusion of some Congressmen in the PCC. “How can Altinho Gomes be given high positions in the party?”, he asked. Gomes was named one of the six general secretaries of the party yesterday. Interestingly, Gomes was appointed a general secretary nearly two months ago and his name was retained as per the announcement made by the High Command. According to one report, Altinho Gomes’ name also figures in the Pradesh Election Committee. Alemao also expressed his resentment over the appointment of Rupa Bhakta as the new treasurer of the party. When pointed out that the appointments have been made after clearance by the High Command, Alemao said it is “name sake”. “How do they know all the members included in the PCC”, he shot back indirectly implying that the constitution has been made by the Party President Ravi Naik himself. The PCC office bearers are nearly 20 in number while the executive is of 27 members. Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu who finds no place in the PCC is also learnt to be quite hurt. No MLA except Ravi Naik figures in the PCC. Hitherto, Deshprabhu was vice-persident and so was Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes. Ravi Naik, on the other hand, has said that the constitution has been done in consultation with the High Command and due care was taken to give representation to all sections of the society.
[Goanet] Goa planning to achieve cent per cent literacy: Faleiro
Goa planning to achieve cent per cent literacy: Faleiro Panaji: Goa Education Minister Luizinho Faleiro today said the government was planning to introduce mobile schools at primary and middle level in order to achieve cent per cent literacy in the State. Mr Faleiro told mediapersons here that the government was keen on improving the quality and competence of graduates in technical education. He also expressed concern over the fact that 600 polytechnic students had to stay at home for not being allowed to attend classes consequent to their failure and accumulation of backlog in diploma courses. The Board of Technical Education had earlier introduced Rule 5(E), forbidding students, who had accumulated more than 10 backlog courses, from registering to attend the classes. The rule was formulated in 2004 and approved by the Board for implementation in 2005. However, since the students of the current batch were not informed about the rule at the time of their registration in 2003-04, they would be exempted from it, the Minister said. A high-level five member committee was also set up to look into the upgradation of diploma level education, so as to ensure quality and industrial relevance of the courses and employment capability of the graduates, Mr Faleiro said. The committee would also look into the existing courses, requirements of new courses and involvement of industry in monitoring diploma-level education and would give a report to the government within 45 days, he added
[Goanet] Press Statement re: Dabolim/Mopa Airport controversy for kind favour of publication.
September 12, 2005 To:The Administrator,GOANET.Via e-mail. Sir, Sub: Press Statement re: Dabolim/Mopa Airport controversy for kind favour of publication. Attached please find the Statement issued by the Party in connection with the ongoing controversy of Dabolim the proposed new International Airport at Mopa in Pernem Taluka and request you to publish the same in your esteemed D-LISTThanking you, Yours Sincerely, Sd/-(Dr. N.S. Dumo)President *** In the context of the ongoing controversy on retaining Dabolim Airport as the Civilian Airport and the non desirability of theproposed new International Airport at MOPA, the Goa Su-Raj Party wants the people of Goa to understand that it has always maintained the view that Dabolim Airport should service Goa as its sole Civilian Airport and that the Indian Naval Operations conducted from Dabolim Airport should be shifted lock stock and barrel to the Sea Bird Base in neighbouring Karwar. In fact, sometime back, the Goa Su-Raj Party was appalled to read in the local newspapers that the Goa Legislative Assembly, during the tenure of Manohar Parrikar led Government, had passed a resolution almost without discussion on a motion moved by Mr. Jitendra Deshprabhu, MLA from Pernem, to create a new civilian airport at Mopa. That the motion enjoyed the support of all the Congress MLAs in the Assembly apart from the BJP Legislators, is therefore not in doubt. The Goa Su-Raj Party maintains that the Dabolim Airport which was a civilian airport during the erstwhile Portuguese regime was taken over by the Indian Defence Forces during Operation Vijay in 1961, but instead of reverting the same tocivilian authority, the Indian Naval Forces continued occupying the same in a manner reminiscent ofconquering forces and not liberating ones. The Goa Su-Raj Party also draws the attention of the people of Goa that when Mr. Mathany Saldanha wrote a well substantiated article, which appeared in one of the local English dailies, much prior to his election as the MLA from Cortalim, concerning the illegal occupation by the Indian Navy of the Dabolim Airport. The Indian Navy, which hitherto had not reacted to talk on Mopa, immediately backed the idea of such a civilian airport to seek to draw off heat from the demand for the return of the Dabolim Airport to Civilian Authority. Goa Su-Raj Party, whilst congratulating Mr. Churchill Alemao, MP, on his belated stand on the Dabolim Airport, wishes to remind the general public of Goa that if the demand for the return of the Dabolim Airport to the Civilian status is to succeed, they will have to force their respective MLAs, for whom they have voted, to take a positive stand towards this issue and to force the Government of Goa to desist from creating another airport which will service areas of Maharashtra and cause the downfall of the Tourism Industry in Goa, for, once Mopa International Airport has been constructed, the Indian Navy will do everything in its power to relentlessly curb and/or bring difficulties in the way of the civilian flights landing at Dabolim. The Goa Su-Raj Party has made its intentions very clear on the Dabolim and Mopa Airports in its recently released Road Map for Goa and hereby gives a call to all like minded people of Goa, irrespective of their Party inclinationsaffiliations, to come together on one platform for the return of Dabolim Airport to the Civilian status and for scrapping the projected International Airport at Mopa in Pernem Taluka.

THE CRYING NEED FOR REFRACTIVE SURGERY TO TREAT MEDIA BLINDSPOTS. News report of 11/9/05: Intra-state flights planned in Maharashtra. This is about a joint venture proposal for starting air services connecting small places in the state. Those mentioned include Latur, Kolhapur, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Gondia and Nanded. Sindhudurg is not mentioned but is unlikely to be missed given the persistent chorus from Goa to shift the proposed Mopa airport to it. Maharashtra is pretty much alive to its aviation needs and given the positive efforts of its top politicians including civil aviation minister Praful Patel, it is gratutitous for Goa to invite Maharashtra to take Mopa. The idea should be to design Mopa to maximise the benefit to Goa while minimising its cost. The rest is irrelevant.

[Goanet] RE: Goanet Reader: Goa's media: too many blind spots
At our starkly modest but yet independent unofficial press club -- Cafe Prakash in the heart of Panjim, where journos meet up each evening, thank goodness we don't have to depend on officialdom for this too -- there was some angst while introspection over where we err. One middle-aged journo quoted a senior as saying Goa's journalism is mostly pressnote-centric and press conference-based.True. We are all to blame for what's going wrong. What about readers who don't challenge or question media's abuse of the faith placed in them? Was curious as to how many members of this koffee klatch were high on goanet and how many used it professionally rather than as a mere time-pass. Are there ANY local papers (without necessarily mentioning names) who take at least SOME cues from what they come across on goanet? If so then our toils may be worthwhile. Its barely visible in the paper I get.

The admirable part is, he is the only musician involved in the recording. It is a first of its kind in the field of Konkanni instrumental music. The playing and recording of the instruments is superb and perfect. To have a rich appreciation of its music, one has to only hear the cassette. The old Konkanni hits like Shirley, Ye Ye Kathrina, Mother Theresa etc are orchestrated with a lively beat and rhythm. The cassette includes many Konkanni composers. Adrian has plans to release another cassette CD to accommodate other Konkanni composers who have not been included in his first Konkanni Instrumental Album.
