RE: [Goanet] The debate on non-reservations

2006-05-04 Thread Nasci Caldeira

Dear Vasant,

I agree with you; but u should also know that the prevalence of the caste
system among Christians in Goa, and perhaps in Mangalore too, is not that
much enforced or put in practice. Since a lot of the Christians in Goa and
Mangalore inherited their High or low caste, from their Hindu ancestry, they
cannot shed their caste so easily as they are all living and breathing among
their Hindu brothers and sisters. So I would think that whilst retaining
their high caste because they are born thus; they do not practice the harsh
practices of the Hindu high caste. There are exceptions; but then again
these have inherited and not created the system. Again thats no excuse.

The caste system is not only religious but has become cultural over the
centuries; So what is required is for all to join in the Cultural
Revolution, that I would like to happen. Yes , their enlightenment is not
complete if they still practice the caste in practice. Remember, the old
'inquisitions' were all about this!

Enlightenment is about my not believing and worshipping animals and reptiles
and other weird deities, and or looking down at fellow humans, sorely based
on their birth! Understand Vasant??

Threfore all of India's varied societies must learn to integrate culturally
and in every way possible; whilst at the same time keeping their religious
practices strictly private!. Bye now. More on this later.

ROOTING FOR GOA: THE FRUITS ARE BEGINNING TO SHOW

By Miguel Braganza
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Goa has been known as 'Aparant, a region without
boundaries. The golden sunsets, the golden ripe mangoes,
cashews and jackfruits and, perhaps, the gold bedecked
women attending the weddings during the long summer
season, moved some poet to call Goa a golden land or
Sunaparant. Like El Dorado, Goa draws people to itself.
More than that, it draws its sons and daughter back to
 their native soil.

One such son-of-the-soil to return to Goa is Pandurang G.
Kakodkar or, simply, PGK. A former Chairman of the State Bank
of India (SBI) and the Goa Public Service Commission (GPSC)
and a current member of the Board of many prestigious
companies like MCX and Sesa Goa, PGK has returned to his
native land with a one point agenda: to draw funds for
planting and nurturing a million trees in Goa.

His first step was to get his former employer, the SBI, to
fund tree planting along the Miramar by-pass. People refuse
to accept that the huge trees along this road are just six
years old, but that is the truth.

PGK ensures that the trees are pruned and watered during
summer. He also has manure applied to these road side trees.
The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), the SBI and,
recently, the Botanical Society of Goa have joined hands with
PGK to make things grow. He is always there in the forefront.

It is not for nothing that the Maharashtra Chamber of
Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA) awarded him with
the Dr. G.D. Deshmukh award recently. PGK, as the
vice-chairman of the Western Ghats Kokum Foundation, is
actively involved in the greening of the Goa University
campus and road side tree planting from the Raj Bhavan to Goa
Medical College funded by MCX, Sesa Goa and SBI for now.

Agriculture and Dr. Hemant Yeshwant Karapurkar have been
synonymous for almost half a century in Goa. HYK has been the
Director of Agriculture, Project Director of Rural
Development Agency, founder chairman of Goa State
Horticulture Corporation and chairman of GPSC when the likes
of Sanjit Rodrigues, Sandip Jacques, V. M. Prabhudesai and
Elvis Gomes were selected into Goa Civil Service.

He has been an active member of the Botanical Society of Goa
and continues to guide it as its immediate past president. It
was during his stint as the president of BSG the the fruit
festival of the Sunaparant, the Konkan Fruit Fest, was
conceived and given birth in association with the then Panjim
Municipal Council under the dynamic and soft-spoken Ashok
Mogu Naik. HYK has also served as the founder chairman of the
Goa Biodiversity Board and has been a member of the working
group on campus greening at Goa University.

Fr. Inacio Almeida, sfx, of the Society of Pilar comes
from a family of farmers from Curtorim. In addition to
his religious work, Fr. Almeida is an avid farmer and
 social scientist.

He has won the Krishi Samrat award for highest sugarcane
productivity per hectare in Goa while working on the
Society's Dudh Sagar Farm in Collem.

If EM technology has become a household name in Goa, lay the
blame on Fr. Almeida. Today, he is promoting EM and Jatropha
bio-diesel through his Pilar Nature Farm so that Goa can
truly be a cleaner and greener place, naturally!

Fr. Almeida grows off-season vegetables under polyhouses,
flowers, vanilla, areca nut, fertilizer and pesticide-free
rice and is forever in search of newer and safer
technologies.

In his own words, "We eat pesticide-laden vegetables from
Belgaum and rush to Belgaum hospitals for treatment." If one
wants to eat healthy and live healthy, Fr. Almeida is a good
person to turn to. All others can pray to St. Jude, the
patron of the hopeless cases.

Dr. Ajit Shirodkar was not born in Estado da India
Portuguesa simply because the Portuguese did not capture
neighbouring Vengurla. Based at Bambolim, this holder of
a doctorate in Pharmacology from Purdue University, is
 every bit a Goan.

His one point agenda is to develop and adopt technologies
that will restore Goa as the hub of the Konkan. Gopakkapatna
was the port of trade with India for those who crossed the
Arabian Sea to trade Indian spices for Arab horses. It can
now be the hub for trade in mangoes and other fruits of the
Konkan.

Dr.Shirodkar's primary target as the chairman of the Western
Ghats Kokum Foundation (WGKF), of course, is Garcinia indica.

His father was involved in the development and marketing of
Amrit Kokum, the sweet, purplish pink summer drink made of
Bhindam or Kokum. The 'Goa butter' or 'bindnell' is a
vegetable fat that is solid at 40 degrees Celsius. It finds
application in medicine, cuisine, confectionery and in
cosmetics in an increasing health conscious world.

The discovery by a biochemist, Dr. John Lowenstein, of the
cholesterol balancing and fat suppressing qualities of
Hydroxy Citric Acid (HCA) found naturally in Garcinia fruits

[Goanet] Nuclear Threat for Goans in Gulf.

2006-05-04 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes

Iran's Nuclear Threat even for Goans working in the Gulf.

The following I wrote in the local Arab Times appeared in its edition dated
1.5.06. For the benefit of many of the Goan readers spread all around the
world, I am reproducing it in this forum.

"This is in reply to the latest development in this region regarding Iran’s
decision to go nuclear and to destroy Israel. One thing one must admit that
no power currently on this planet is capable to destroy Israel when USA is
in totality supporting Israel. The late assassinated president Anwar Sadat
of Egypt was absolutely right when he said during his 1973 war with Israel
that “I cannot fight this war because it is not Israel that I am fighting
with but the USA”. Hence, the peace moves leading to Camp David agreement
and Egypt gaining territorial concession without firing a bullet. This was
the victory for Egypt thru peaceful method. What one can attain with
peaceful means one cannot attain thru war. Iran with the help of nuclear
weapons if it succeeds in producing in the near future will create more
headaches to its Gulf neighbours than to Israel. If Iran attacks Israel,
the Jewish State will not sit idle, neither its allies nor its protectors in
the West will keep silence. It will be a war for Israel for its own survival
and for its survival Israel will go to any extent. Can Iran afford to pay
the price for such a war? Ayotolla Khomeni after returning to Iran vowed to
export his revolution to neighbouring countries but finally got embroiled in
the war with Iraq and lost the track of his vow. Iran will have to think
hundred times before attacking Israel and thinking of liquidating it from
this planet as per the statement of the current Irani president. Israel is
come to stay in this region and its grip over its territory is very firm
even though I strongly denounce its treatment to Palestinians who are the
real sons and daughters of that soil. Israel in this area is an evil but
for West surely it is a necessary evil and for this reason west is blindly
supporting Israel’s existence.

During the last 8 year war between Iraq and Iran according to reports
available that time Iran targetted some areas of Kuwait in the name of Iraq
and if tomorrow Iran acquires atomic bombs I am sure the security of Gulf
countries will be in peril. As it is Iran is nicely seating over the three
islands of UAE and does not even care to sit on the negotiating table to
settle this dispute peacefully. The arrogance and might of Iran is more
powerful in front of its immediate neighbours. Iran does not care for
civilized norms for this reason it kept American diplomats as hostages for
so long period during the presidency of Jimmy Carter. Iran does not
understand international language nor does Iran know to live under the
umbrella of International strictures. Saddam Hussein while in power tried to
live in isolation against the will of international community but finally he
failed. Likewise all other brute leaders and their nations will fail before
the might of international community. Nobody should dare to challenge the
will of the international community otherwise their fete will be like that
of Saddam’s Iraq. Wars are not fought with slogans only. God helps to those
who help themselves and not to those who try and liquidate others.

My immediate fear is this. I have already suffered a trauma of invasion of
Kuwait and along with me millions in Kuwait. If Iran shows its stubbornness
and intransigence attitude to international community I am sure USA may take
punitive action unilaterally against Iran. By taking punitive actions
against Iran, USA first of all will protect the existence of Israel and
secondly USA by doing so will curtail the risks of having terrorists attacks
propped up by Iranian support to terrorists against its own security. If
USA backed by its Western allies attacks Iran to destroy its nuclear
facilities of producing atomic weapons, I am sure its aftermath effect will
have severe repercussion in the neighbouring countries including Kuwait from
where I am earning my sustenance. Will some better sense prevail on Iran
and will Iran abide by settling this issue peacefully? According to my
observation, it is more secure for Arab and Gulf countries in particular to
have an atomic bomb with Israel than with Iran because Israel is unlikely to
use nuclear weapons against Gulf countries. In fact, because of the
protection of Gulf and for the sake of the liberation of Kuwait, without
retaliating and aggravating the impact of the war, Israel suffered the
bombardment of Scud Missiles from Saddam’s Iraq.

"We Goans" are affected by these intrusion of outsiders in our Goa and
showing off their 'dadagiri' as can be seen in Manuel Caldera's case. I
concur with Bernard's comments, Mario instead of supporting 'we Goans'
your posts are against Goans.

10.30 A.M. on Friday 05 May, 2006 Between 11.30 A.M. and 3.00 P.M., entries
will be accepted for competition in processed fruit products from juices and
wines to cakes and pastries. The entries will be judged at 4.00 P.M. the same
day by F & B experts with experience in the trade.

On Saturday, 06 May, there will be a fun fruit eating competition for mangoes,
papayas, watermelon and banana in quick succession between 4.00 P.M. and 5.30
P.M.. The pace setter is Mr. Suresh Naik of Vasco, a winner of the competition
since he joined the fun. His last record is 2 kg. watermelon pulp[seeds and
all] in 5 minutes at 'Green Mormugao' on 05 March, 2006. He just cannot win
all the four fruit categories this time!

Last year, many persons were disappointed that they could not taste, or even
get a whiff of, the Kokum wine prepared under the guidance of a researcher at
Goa University. Most people complained but some decided to change the
situation. Dr. John Rodrigues of Chichinim, who was formerly doing "Product
Development" for Hoechst [Hext] medicines now has four variants of Kokum wine
in both ,Sec[dry] and demi-Sec [semi-dry], types. You can smell it, taste it
and buy it to drink at home. Carlos Figueiredo of Aldona also has made kokum
fruit wine for home consumption. May their tribe increase.

In 2003, Lumina Lobo was the sole entrepreneur making sweet cashew wine
[doce/douce]. Today she has competition from John Rodrigues and Luis of
Saligao who also have cashew wine. She has added a demi-Sec to her list. So
have the others. She has added Jamun wine to her list. so have the others. In
the years to come we are likely to have a lot of sweet summer wine! Demi-Sec
and Sec wines will follow because men will be men. Making wine with the end of
summer fruits has a distinct advantage over spoiling the fruit.

Shivani Arolkar of Kudal is going to be back with mangoes and more...juices
and RTD[Ready To Drink] fruit juices for the hot summer afternoons. Bread and
More joins the band with tarts, chats and pastries made of fruit. Juices,
mocktails and possibly cocktails will follow. D'Souza Biotech's Frugurt
[fruity yogourt]was a hit last summer at the KFF. It is back at the fest. So
are the fresh fruit ice-creams from Sonam's Frosty. Sonam, samja karo.

You have sampled the wares of Canancona, Panjim and Pilar Self-Help Groups
[SHGs] since 2003. This year the first Federation of 55 SHGs under the name of
Disha Rural Women's SHG Association of Anjuna is going to burst on the scene.
On 25 April, Disha SHG Association had a mini-fair cum training session in
waste management at Anjuna. The member SHGs had a turnover of about half a
lakh rupees in the 4 hour event. Activities range from catering [through Rural
Polytechnic scheme] to to beauticians to fashion designing. And you thought
that SHGs only make pappads, laddoos and chakri?

Dr.Ajit Shirodkar will be promoting scientific mango cultivation on his own
and Kokum cultivation through the Western Ghats Kokum Foundation. He is a Euro
GAPs [Good Agricultural Practices] certified Mango grower with an orchard and
ripening chamber at Devgad, the home of the best Alphonso and Kesar mangoes.

[Goanet] Rooting for Goa : Fruits in the Konkan

2006-05-04 Thread Goanet News Service
ROOTING FOR GOA

By Miguel Braganza

The fruits are beginning to show

Goa has been known as 'Aparant' a region without boundaries. The golden
sunsets, the golden ripe mangoes, cashews and jack fruits and, perhaps, the
gold bedecked women attending the weddings during the long summer season,
moved some poet to call Goa a golden land or Sunaparant. Like El Dorado, Goa
draws people to itself. More than that, it draws its sons and daughter back to
their native soil.

One such son-of-the-soil to return to Goa is Pandurang G. Kakodkar or, simply,
PGK. A former Chairman of the State Bank of India [SBI] and the Goa Public
Service Commission [GPSC]and a current member of the Board of many prestigious
companies like MCX and Sesa Goa, PGK has returned to his native land with a
one point agenda: to draw funds for planting and nurturing a million trees in
Goa. His first step was to get his former employer, the SBI, to fund tree
planting along the Miramar by-pass. People refuse to accept that the huge
trees along this road are just six years old but that is the truth. PGK
ensures that the trees are pruned and watered during summer. He also has
manure applied to these road side trees. The Corporation of the City of Panaji
[CCP], the SBI and, recently, the Botanical Society of Goa have joined hands
with PGK to make things grow. He is always there in the forefront. It is not
for nothing that the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture
[MACCIA] awarded him with the Dr. G.D. Deshmukh award recently. PGK, as the
Vice-Chairman of the Western Ghats Kokum Foundation, is actively involved in
the greening of the Goa University campus and road side tree planting from the
Raj Bhavan to Goa Medical College funded by MCX, Sesa Goa and SBI for now.

Agriculture and Dr. Heman Yeshwant Karapurkar have been synonymous for almost
half a century in Goa. HYK has been the Director of Agriculture, Project
Director of Rural Development Agency, founder Chairman of Goa State
Horticulture Corporation and Chairman of GPSC when the likes of Sanjit
Rodrigues, Sandip Jacques, V. M. Prabhudesai and Elvis Gomes were selected
into Goa Civil Service. He has been an active member of the Botanical Society
of Goa and continues to guide it as its Immediate Past President. It was
during his stint as the President of BSG the the fruit festival of the
Sunaparant, the Konkan Fruit Fest, was conceived and given birth in
association with the then Panjim Municipal Council under the dynamic and soft
spoken Ashok Mogu Naik. HYK has also served as the founder Chairman of the Goa
Biodiversity Board and has been a member of the Working Group on campus
greening at Goa University.

Fr. Inacio Almeida, sfx, of the Society of Pilar comes from a family of
farmers from Curtorim. In addition to his religious work, Fr. Almeida is an
avid farmer and social scientist. He has won the Krishi Samrat award for
highest sugarcane productivity per hectare in Goa while working on the
Society's Dudh Sagar Farm in Collem. If EM technology has become a household
name in Goa, lay the blame on Fr. Almeida. Today, he is promoting EM and
Jatropha bio-diesel through his Pilar Nature Farm so that Goa can truly be a
cleaner and greener place, naturally! Fr. Almeida grows off-season vegetables
under polyhouses, flowers, vanilla, areca nut, fertilizer and pesticide-free
rice and is forever in search of newer and safer technologies. In his own
words, "We eat pesticide laden vegetables from Belgaum and rush to Belgaum
hospitals for treatment." If one wants to eat healthy and live healthy, Fr.
Almeida is a good person to turn to. All others can pray to St. Jude, the
patron of the hopeless cases.

Dr. Ajit Shirodkar was not born in Estado da India Portuguesa simply because
the Portuguese did not capture neighbouring Vengurla. Based at Bambolim, this
holder of a doctorate in Pharmacology from Purdue University, is every bit a
Goan. His one point agenda is to develop and adopt technologies that will
restore Goa as the hub of the Konkan. Gopakkapatna was the port of trade with
India for those who crossed the Arabian Sea to trade Indian spices for Arab
horses. It can now be the hub for trade in mangoes and other fruits of the
Konkan. Dr.Shirodkar's primary target as the Chairman of the Western Ghats
Kokum Foundation [WGKF], of course, is Garcinia indica. His father was
involved in the development and marketing of Amrit Kokum, the sweet, purplish
pink summer drink made of Bhindam of Kokum. The 'Goa butter' or 'bindnell' is
a vegetable fat that is solid at 40 degrees Celsius. It finds application in
medicine, cuisine, confectionary and in cosmetics in an increasing health
conscious world. The discovery by a biochemist, Dr. John Lowenstein, of the
cholesterol balancing and fat suppressing qualities of Hydroxy Citric Acid
[HCA] found naturally in Garcinia fruits have only confirmed what the people
of Aparant knew when they added sol

Hungry shoppers are being offered the chance to eat a gourmet

The McDonald sandwich - named after its creator Scott McDonald, the

Its cost is down to the Wagyu beef that makes up most of the filling,
packed in a 24-hour fermented sour dough bread.

There have been at least five advance orders placed for the 21oz (595g) meal.

If you are a food lover, this represents great value for money

Mario has made the above assertion (with a smiley) more than once on this
list. On a serious vein, however, the truth is that:

(1) There is no village with that name in Portugal, but a city which has
about 4,000 inhabitants and is the headquarters of a "concelho" (= "taluka")
and of a "comarca" (= judicial district) having 22 "freguesias" ("firgozo"
in Konkani) and 17,000 inhabitants;

(2) The name of the city is spelt "Gouveia"and not "Goveia" as is Mario's
surname;

(3) The said Portuguese city exists at least since the 12th century. It has
textile, milk products and ceramic industries, and is situated at an
altitude of 550-600 metres.

Elisabeth,
You need to be careful not to confuse classic liberal
democrats, who stood for free market capitalism, with
modern political liberals who follow a socialist
philosophy. For example, President John F. Kennedy, a
Democrat who believed in a strong national defense and
lower taxes, would be a total misfit in the modern
Democrat party, dominated by his ultra-socialist
brother, Ted Kennedy.
>
Thus Friedrich von Hayek was not a flaming liberal in
the modern political context. Here is how Fred's
favorite encyclopedia describes him:
>
"Friedrich August von Hayek (May 8, 1899 in Vienna –
March 23, 1992 in Freiburg) was an Austrian economist
and political philosopher, noted for his defense of
liberal democracy and free-market capitalism against
socialist and collectivist thought in the mid-20th
century"

I had no intentions of kicking Ayn anywhere - only to
emphasize the free market economists and philosophers
that I favor the most. She definitely belongs to my
end of the philosophical spectrum, but because she
used fiction as her medium, and was personally a
hedonist and libertine, she is easily vilified and
deliberately misunderstood by the other end, as Fred
illustrated.

I think you are confusing affirmative action with
"jobs being reserved". Affirmative action requires a
conscientious effort by the employer to diversify its
work-group. To this end, the employer may have a plan
drawn out as to how it will achieve this goal.
Generally the "4/5 rule" applies to ensure that
discrimination of minorities has not taken place and
that each minority has been represented in the final
selection, given the total applicant pool.

[Goanet] storyteller in Goa (Jantar Mantar)

2006-05-04 Thread DJ Fadereu

Dear Goanet Subscribers,

My meatspace name is Rohit Gupta, and I am a storyteller. Yes, I
know that needs some explanation and here it is. I was writer
in my previous avatar. Over the last two years I did research
in Indian history alongside the history of technology, and that of clocks.
During this long ordeal, I discovered Jantar Mantar, a lost book written by
Jyotishacharya Ganganath Triyambak, circa 1900.

In 9 parts, it describes the life of this astrologer in the early twentieth
century, and more significantly - it is a prophecy of the 20th century,
using parallels between society and abstract machines.
This sounded very academic to most people, yes -
so I started performing this poem live with music, dressed as the Rajasthani
astrologer, explaining things where needed. Please note that Triyambak's
predictions are recited to the audience long after the events he
predicted have happened, by the person who
discovered this lost book - DJ Fadereu.

I'm leaving Bombay because the police have imposed a bizzarro
license on live artistic performances, which is too expensive
for my modest means. I travel and tell this story, and whatever
money I make from my audience - I use it to travel and write.

So I thought of Goa, a place I love and long to see again,
but this time not as a tourist, but as a friend of the local community.
I have a lot to learn about Goa, its people and history. (Pssst...
If the name "Dr. Garcia da Orta" means anything to you,
please let me know. I am also planning to drink
as much feni as I can and do "research". Heh!)

Plans: I will be taking up a cheap room somewhere near Calangute to begin
with (less than 200 a day), and try my luck at the shacks and cafes
for evening performances. If you can reccommend some nice places,
restaurants where I can perform, or if you own one yourself,
I would love to meet up with you during my visit and tell my story.
I will be shuttling between Bombay and Goa until I finish my schedule
of acts here in corporate offices. My contacts, and a detailed website
about the show is listed below.

I look forward to hearing from you.

warm regards,

If I am not mistaken, the correct message engraved there is as follows:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

  À MEMORIA
das infelizes 81 vitimas do naufragio
da lancha "Goa"
 ocorrido a 3-12-1901
   dedica este singelo padrao
a colonia goeza de Aden
pedindo a todos
os que por aqui passarem
que orem pelo seu eterno descanso

   3-12-1904
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The cross was erected on December 3, 1904 in memory of the incident
(accident) which had occurred three years earlier. The shipwreck happened on
the feast day of St. Francis Xavier, but it is not clear whether the launch
carrying those people (Goans settled in Aden) was on its way from Betim,
from Verem or/and from Panjim to Old Goa or was returning from Old Goa to
any or all of these three ferry points but was caught in rough weather and
capsized. The translation of the message is:
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

   TO THE MEMORY
of the 81 unhappy victims of the shipwreck
of the launch "Goa"
 which occurred on 3-12-1901
this simple monument is dedicated
by the Goan colony of Aden
requesting all those who pass here
to pray for their eternal rest

 3-12-1904
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I think that before the final date there is also the inscription «P.N. e
A.M.» which stands for «Pai Nosso e Ave Maria» and means «O.F. and H.M.» =
«Our Father and Hail Mary».

Cardinal Dias Deplores Anti-Christian Films, Launches Prayer Crusade

...
The novel pretends to be presenting facts of history but twists
historical characters and facts to help the author make blasphemous
comments against Christianity and its leaders.
...

Isn't this heaping fiction upon fiction? I won't be holding my breath that
the volleys of prayers directed skyward are going to make an iota of
difference. Calling it a 'Prayer Crusade' only dredges up other unsavoury
memories.

Re: [Goanet] Crocodile burgurs, Vinicola wine & the Indian economy

2006-05-04 Thread Elisabeth Carvalho
Dear Cornel,
Seems like you enjoyed your trip. I think the wine is
bottled in plastic rather than glass probably because
plastic is cheaper.

You should have tried the croc. I've never had but
have had alligator here in the US. It's sort of like
chicken and with a little tartar sauce can be quite
nice.

I also agree with you that the prospect of India
joining superpower status within the next few decades
is a myth. Even with foreign investment and the
multiplier effect in full force, it cannot generate
enough ripples to bring 60% of the population out of
poverty within a short span of time. Simultaneously
unlike China, no concerted efforts are being made to
curb population by either party.

Even Goldman Sachs in their follow up to BRICs, make
note of the fact that despite huge strides being made
in the aggregate economy, personal incomes will be
only a fraction of those enjoyed in the west.
Increases in GDP of countries with such large
population means little to the PCI.

Also, the CPI in India, continuously puts a wrench in
the corporate wheels of India by objecting to
dismantling of PSUs, increases in foreign investment
in vital sectors and its general dislike of anything
be it investment or ideas imported from the West. We
have to overhaul the political system itself by
reducing the impact of regional politics if we want to
cohesively impact national economics.

And that's my morning dose of pontificating!

Sorry, this is not by Air Ship but by Dubai-Cochin Ship services to start soon.

The launch of ship service was originally set for February but fresh

The ship will carry 700-800 passengers.
It will take 4 to 4.5 days to reach Cochin.
Twice a week and then soon once a week sailing.
It is to be operated along the lines of a Cruise and baggage allowance of about
150kgs,
Appealing Fare, facilities like Cinema, night club, Computers etc etc

RE: [Goanet] Re a crocodile burger

2006-05-04 Thread Nasci Caldeira

Cornel,
Cairns is in Queensland, and is a hot spot there, being a gateway to the
great Australian Barrier Reef. I do not know of Croc meat; but some places
have service with Kangaroo meat if some one wants it. The Yarra is
Melbourne's ;muddy'// river; not so bad'; developed all over, in the city
area with beaut parks, restaurants alfresco style, and shopping malls with
boutique shops, etc. A wide and long promenade along the river, with bicycle
tracks is one of the highlights, of the Yarra. You probably seen the sheer
beauty of the area, if you watched the Commonwealth Games recently.

Beef is one or Australia's finer meat produce; and is exported in large
quantities specially to Japan and SE Asia. Mouth watering! I go for Beef and
Veal, most times; hate lamb, as it also smells a bit compared to Goat meat.

But there is also, so called 'Kobe Beef' produced in Japan in limited
quantities, is very good! This Kobe Beef is produced by feeding Cattle with
imported special Hay from the USA and other nourishments like beer and Saki
etc. There is a chain of restaurants in Japan which cater exclusively to
Kobe Beef. Only those who visit Japan know about it. Otherwise people think
that Japan has no beef of its own.

As for Vinicola in plastic bottles, I am surprised too! As recently, in
Margao at Christmas time I was presented with Vinicola in a glass (Ketchup
size) bottle, by a Goan Lady from London on holiday.

First time I ate 'horse meat' was in Hamburg, Germany; when a German friend
intoduced the same to me as 'Wurst' the popular German sausage. I believe
they learnt to eat horse during the War Days, when meat was scarce; Only
certain parts of horse are eaten; I like the taste though; could not make
out the difference.

See Ya!

[Goanet] goanet progesses as new voices are heard

2006-05-04 Thread Eugene Correia
It's nice to hear new voices on goanet. Maybe a year
or more I lamented the absence of female voices which
were once loud and clear. Oldtimers will remember
them, so I need not name them.
Elizabeth is a good replacement to those who have now
become inactive. She gives back as much as she takes.
And that too in rapid-fire action.
Though Mario has been around for sometime now, I still
consider him a new voice. He surely replaces some of
the old ones.
I wish I could keep pace with the debates over
religion, reservations, NRI voting rights, etc. that
have marked goanet over the past few months.
Since I get a digest version, I think I lag behind. I
am thinking of gearing up to meet the "new" challenges
of the "new" voices by diving into the debate, even
if I have too with my legs first in.
The debate are tense and engaging, and I wish some of
them involved deeply in their point-and-counter-point
arguments leave personal remarks aside.

RE: [Goanet] A Cross on Panji River bank: Some one please help withthis Portuguese-English Translation

2006-05-04 Thread Paulo Colaco Dias
Hi Joe, here is my contribution to the best of my knowledge.

" `A MEMORIA DAS INFELIZES 81 VICTIMAS DO SINISTRO DA LANCHA "GOA" OCCORRIDO
A 3-12-1901. DEDICA ESTE SINGELO PADRAO A COLONIA GOEZA DE ADEN PEDINDO A
TODOS OS QUE POR AQUI PASSAREM".

Please note the following:

1. "Lancha" can be translated as a motor boat.
2. "Singelo" means simple, sincere, modest.
3. "Padrao" means monument - in this case, the ideal translation is an
imprint on stone (very common on Portuguese colonies) which can be also
translated in this case to a tribute, homage, a mark of respect, etc.
4. "Colonia Goeza de Aden" means the Goan Community from Aden, i.e., Goans
who had migrated to Aden.
5. It does not look like the sentence is terminated. Can it be that the rest
of the imprint got deteriorated or maybe has fallen down and you can no
longer see? It would make much more sense if it terminated with "que rezem
pelas suas almas.", which means "to pray for their souls".

So, my translation is as follows:

***
In remembrance of the unfortunate 81 victims of the accident with the motor
boat "GOA" occurred on the 3-12-1901. The Goan Community of Aden dedicates
this modest tribute requesting all who pass here

(to pray for their souls). -> this bit is not actually there but possible
has fallen down or got deteriorated.

***

Hope this was helpful,
Best wishes

Paulo Colaco Dias

Re the often said view of India making huge economic progress to super-power

Maestro Josinho from Velim rightly deserves the Goa State Award for his
contribution in the field of Music.
Beside playing for several tiatrs and several top directors he has been
composing music for albums and if I'm not mistaken he has rendered music to
over 200 Konkani albums including two of my programmes "Mhaka Jieonk Dhi"
 and recently " Mhozo Hero".

The name of Maestro Josinho should surely appear in the Limca book of
Records if not in the Guiness Book of World Records.

A humble musician has traveled to many countries including the Gulf
countries several times. He began his music carrier as a violinist in a
circus band and gradually rise to be a music director and composer.

A short answer to your powerfully worded pertinent questions below, might be
that the Catholic Church, like most other churches, is a business first and
foremost. The centrality of its business lies in exploiting human
frailities, fears and uncertainties, well laced with some dubious
spirituality. Through this process, it has become internationally, one of
the richest successful businesses ever known with a massive clientele.

Notwithstanding the view above, I absolutely insist in respecting and not
deriding sincere believers in the teachings of the Catholic Church. Sadly
however, the Church has many sordid appendages to its history. This
includes, in Goa, its close historic association with the hegemonic evil of
caste practice. Priesthood in earlier times was significantly caste-based as
historical records, in my possession, clearly illustrate. Further, social
and political control within the Church, from the 'upper' caste echelons
has continued to reflect this policy to this day. If this is not true,
hopefully, the Archbishop of Goa (or his entourage) will rush to refute this
proposition by drawing from his personal knowledge and experience.

Subject: [Goanet] Re: Cardinal Dias Deplores Anti-Christian Films

I really love it when the Catholic Church talks about distortion of facts
by "evil" people and how we should all pray for them.

What about 2000 years of distortion by the Church?
Let's talk about an "evil" Pope who made MaryMagdalene to be a prostitute
when we now know that if the ministry of Jesus existed, she probably was a
rich patron who played a dominant role.
What about Gospels that existed alongside the four that we know off, like
the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Judas which never saw the light of
day because they didn't fit in with their theology.
What about scrolls found at Nag Hamadi written by Gnostics, a sect of
Christianity probably persecuted and driven to extinction by mainstream
Christians of the time.
What about centuries of manipulation of theology by Popes and Bishops and
Cardinals that conveniently created Virgin births and Holy Spirits to
explain away loopholes in the gospels?
And when all else fails let's not forget "blind faith" for none shall be
so bold as to put their doubting fingers into the palms of Christ and
question the Catholic Church on issues, on theology or on history.
Ofcourse, as Cardinal Dias states, "more things are wrought by prayer than
the world can dream off", like tsunamis and earthquakes and genocides and
famines.Let's not forget that "God has a plan for every
natural disaster victim" because ofcourse there was something wrong with
the original plan of him spending the rest of his life with his loved
ones.
The Catholic Church can easily put Mafia Dons to shame when it comes to
spiritual extortion and Stalin had nothing on totalitarian regimes and
towing the party line when compared to the Catholic Church.

Enough! At least Dan Brown's novel is labeled fiction.
What has the Church been pedaling all these years?

Acclaimed short film about a Sikh American family
after 9/11
premieres on PBS' Independent Lens starting Tuesday,
May 9, 2006.

http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/americanmade/index.html

American Made (http://americanmadethemovie.com) is a
story about a
Sikh American family in the aftermath of 9/11.

When the Singh family's car breaks down in the desert,
Ranjit tells
his father that no one will stop to help because "he
looks like a
terrorist."

What follows is the heart-rending struggle between a
father and son
and a larger exploration of faith, tradition,
acceptance, and what
it means to be 'American' today.

Told with humanity and humor, American Made has won
seventeen awards
from film festivals around the world.

It will likely be the first fictional film about Sikh
Americans post-
9/11 on national television.

Director Sharat Raju's next project is a full-length
documentary
film Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath
(http://dwf-
film.com) to be released in Fall 2006.

Wouldn't a crocodile steak be better on the banks of the Yarra? I only
discovered the availability of crocodile when asked if I wanted it in my
burger in Cairns. I was as surprised as when offered horse in Belgium once.
I did eat the horse but not the croc!

PS The plastic bottles for wine in Goa took my edge off Vinicola recently.
Why plastic?

Now in a lighter vein; Elisabeth! I have become a
bit envious of your date
with Mario! In contrast I am offering you a
'Chateaubriand Steak' (for two)
prepared personally 'medium rare' , with a bottle of
the finest 'Sparkling
Red Burgandy' on ice, to go with it! Life is GOOD on
the banks of the river
Yarra! And all I want is: Hah, Hah! Hummm Hummm!
jolly good company! Will
you?
See Ya!
