AND BEYOND Berkley, California-based Dr Filomena Giese (pronounced Gee-see) is an expat Goan whose name one keeps hearing of in cyberspace. During her recent visit to Goa, FREDERICK NORONHA took the opportunity of a hurried meeting at the Kala Academy canteen to whip out this IBM ThinkPad and record some views and perspectives of this interesting person, who lives about half-an-hour from San Francisco. Excerpts. FN: To begin, Filomena, tell us something about yourself. My parents were married in Singapore. My mother, when she was expecting me, came back to Goa. It was the war time. That's how I was born in Goa. After six years, we went back to Singapore. I was brought up in Singapore, went for my college to Australia -- Melbourne University, where I did a PhD in multicultural education. Of course, I never used that really. I've been teaching English as a second language, and thought I would get on in a career. Unfortunately, I had a brain operation in 1991, and then had to slow down. Q: That's interesting. You've been almost all of your life across the globe, outside of Goa. Why then do you feel so strongly about Goa? We were brought up in a home where (the Goan identity) was very important for my parents. We spoke Konkani and Portuguese at home, though I went to an English school. I understand Konkani, and can say a few words. It makes people smile, because I have an ... (foreign accent). My mother was a great cook. My father was a stickler at home. We were brought up with a sense of being Goan, in a sea of Chinese and Malay. After college, I met and married an American, and have been living in California since 1967. But we went to Goan functions, had Goan friends. It was always like social engagements. Somewhere along the line, I kept saying we should be doing something to help Goa become a better place, and to help Goans here. They have needs, we are well off, and that's true of almost all whoever is in the diaspora. We don't have to struggle. Finally, I met George Pinto who was also looking for something. We set up about making Goa Sudharop (a not-for-profit organisation that supports projects in Goa, www.goasudharop.org). FN: If you were asked to make a shortlist of issues, which would you -- with your perspective from the outside -- see as the three most important facing this region today? Let me thing Okay, I've just been to North India (Rajasthan, Delhi, and Rishikesh) for possibly the first and last time in my life. That's a good perspective for me; I feel we're not alone with some of the issues (that we face in Goa). There's the environmental issues; everywhere there's the issue with garbage. Then, there's the problem of historical buildings. It's not only in Goa. Even India as a whole is over the top in historical buildings. But everywhere there's a need to preserve the past. Besides that, I think, another issue is of adapting to new conditions, facing up to competition from other ethnic groups that come to any place -- whether that's in Jaipur, or Panjim or Rishikesh. There is the pressing need to help people who have been here for many generations to get the job skills, entrepreneurial skills and life skills so that they can compete. FN: Looking back at Goa Sudharop, which you've played an active part in, what would you see as the organisation's main achievements so far? We've managed to raise consciousness among Goans in California and the US or in some other places, through the website. (We've put it on the agenda) that it is a good and healthy thing if we stay connected to our homeland, and that we can really do something. There has been a shift in the thinking of overseas Goans. We have connected with people who have been doing great work in Goa, doing work in the field of education, or saving the environment. This year hopefully we plan to have some projects for Goan seniors. FN: So do you see a bigger potential for the overseas Goan communities to get more deeply with their roots? We've just touched the surface. If there are good projects here that Goans can get interested in, they (their overseas counterparts) will support, they will donate, and they will help. Maybe we can connect people with skills and other talent. There is obvious potential, but I can't predict where it is going to go. FN: But Goans in the US or North America aren't quite like the expat community from Goans
[Goanet] Mopa airport may never take off

It has decided to upgrade the existing airport at Dabolim instead and work here will start next week. Minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel has asked the Airport Authority of India and other concerned agencies to start work. Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred de Souza, who had a meeting with Patel in Delhi, says that as soon as the navy hands over the nine acres of land, the expansion of the airport will begin. He quoted an AAI report which said that in 1995-96, 8,824 aircraft landed at Dabolim, of which 7422 were domestic flights. The projection for 2013-14 was 4,308 international flights and 17,980 domestic flights, he said. The up gradation plans will help extend the infrastructure for adding 10 wide-bodied aircraft, de Souza told DNA. The AAI will also build a new terminal on the northern side and will have four aero bridges. De Souza said that contrary to reports, the navy has not asked for any reciprocal land in exchange for the nine acres it is giving for the expansion in Dabolim. The second nail in Mopa's coffin came last week when the government failed to approve the award for the first notification for the acquisition of 54 lakh square metres of land for the Mopa project. Earlier two other processes for the acquisition of 18 lakh square metres (additional land for the project) and 14 lakh square metres (for approach roads) also had lapsed as no notification was issued by the government as required under the Land Acquisition Act. Congress MLA representing Pernem, Jitendra Deshprabhu, who has been backing the Mopa project and had even organised a rasta and rail roko agitation last month in support of it, refuses to concede that his government has distanced itself from a project which had become a political hot potato after South Goa MP Churchill Alemao had rallied the south against Mopa. He told DNA, In half an hour the land acquisition process can be revived. Too much should not be read into the lapsing. But the Dabolim Airport Action Committee knows that it has won with the imminent expansion of the existing airport and is now going for the kill.=20 Committee spokesman Radharao Gracias told DNA, I welcome the expansion. We demand that the Goa government immediately take a cabinet decision to drop Mopa once and for all. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=3D1029341CatID=3D2 ~(^^)~ Avelino _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] DABOLIM'S DUBIOUS DATA?

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- Dabolim Airport: Centre Agrees for direct Flights. -Dabolim Airport to be expanded very soon (Work starting from next week). -Indian Navy has agreed to provide nine acres of land for enhancing parking bays and constructing parallel taxiways there. -Dabolim Airport will have a new terminal on the northern side (may soon be known as North and South Terminal as in London Gatwick etc) and will have four aerobridges and would be able to handle more aircraft simultaneously. -Dabolim received 690 charter flights last year and this year already touched 720. -Year 1995-96, a total of 8,824 flights received (Intl.+Domestic), the projected figures for the year 2013-14 is 22,288. -A housing colony close to the airport is also proposed to be shifted with the sate Government providing alternative site. -Present 4-5 aircraft parking bays would be expanded to house at least 10 planes- four A-320's and six ATRs. -Navy proposed that civilian air-traffic could freely operated between 6pm to 6am as they did not use airspace during that period. -Dabolim is the only way of entry by air to Goa and it will be upgraded into a first class airport- says Willy. -High paying tourists have asked for direct flights. The Minister has also agreed that not only charter but also scheduled flights be permitted at Dabolim. -Willy also informed that an additional Sharjah-Goa flight will soon be introduced. - Few Airlines have expressed interest to start flights to Goa. Among them are the Condor Airlines-Frankfurt-Goa, British Midland for a Manchester-Goa flight, Air Arabia, Virgin, Emirates etc --- 1. I thought the present terminal was on the North side. Then how can a 'new terminal' be built there? Google-earth watchers pls help clarify. 2. All this time we were being fed data about 'passengers' at Dabolim. Now we are being told about 'aircraft movements'. To convert to passengers we need to know the figure for the average plane load. This depends on the size of the average plane. 3. Furthermore it is really strange that the data given go back to 1995-96 and are projected to 2013-14. But there is no reference to current figures for comparison! What are the growth rates in the past and in the future? 4. The aircraft movement data I have are those provided by the Navy. They relate to the period 1996-97 to 2003-date (Jan/Feb 2003?). The Navy's figure of 6862 for 1996-97 represents a sharp drop from the 8824 for 1995-96 given above. Why is that? Are different entities cooking up different data or did the Navy put some sort of a squeeze on civilian flights in 1996-97? If so, why? 5. In the above report, the emphasis seems to be on foreign tourists. Hence, international flights and charter flights should be on the upswing. Then why is the additional aircraft parking space being built to cater to domestic fleets including A320s and ATRs! What about space for wide-bodied jets? 6. What is being done to expand night flights as urged by the Navy? This will require manning of counters by AAI and airlines, changing of hotel check in times by HASG, availability of taxis by the taxi unions, and most importantly, starting of night flights by airlines. Who is coordinating all these moves? Or will night flights be a convenient cop out for the Navy to claim underutilisation of Dabolim and continue training flights during prime daylight hours? 6. Which housing colony is proposed to be shifted? Is it private or Navy? Just a few doubts about the above data. Cheers. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. With reports of terrorist activities in the tourist hub, the district magistrate has issued orders that no landlord or owner of a property shall let or sub-let any accommodation to any person 'unless and until' he or she has furnished personal details to the local police inspector. According to the order, there have been reports that most of the landlords, owners of the commercial and residential buildings rent or sell their property without getting the personal details of the buyer verified by the police. This casual approach helps criminals, terrorist and anti-social elements. It further states that any person contravening the said order can be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. The order has come in force from April 26 and will remain in force for a period of 60 days. DIG of Goa Police Ujjwal Mishra said the process of collecting information of tenants was still on and tenant verification, which has to be done on tenant forms has started. People who deal in real estate will have to inform in writing about the particulars of their clients to the police station in whose jurisdiction the premise falls, he added. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Politicians should realise that their mere position and social status does not give them a right to interfere with the administration of justice by wilful disobedience of court directives. In the current Pratapsingh Rane's cabinet we have a minister or two who are a law to themselves. This does not augment well for Goa and needs to be checked. The bureaucrats also have to act with caution and demonstrate their courage by upholding the rule of law. They have an obligation to the tax-payer and should not keep dancing to the whimsical tunes and fancies of their political bosses. Worse still is when they are ready to bend when in fact they're not even supposed to bow. [Goanet] Power bikes burn Goa's road -- Jet, set, go

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- Power bikes burn Goa's road -- Jet, set, go By Amanda Alphonso Imagine yourself 'flying' down a road at a speed that causes heads to turn, wondering what just bolted past them. Well, that has always been every youngster's dream, a dream that is surely, and not so slowly, turning into a reality. Says Swapnil Nachinolkar of Nachinolkar Motors, Panjim, Zooming around on a high speed, powerful bikes have always been the trend. This yearning of every youth has now been finding form with the advent of a number of impressive looking bikes guaranteed to catch your eye. Some of the bikes hitting Goan markets this summer include the Kinetic Blaze, a 165cc Italian designed bike, the TVS Aapache 150 cc, and the Honda Shine and Suzuki Heat, both 125 cc. These new additions add to the list of already existing bikes like the Bajaj Pulsar, Avenger, Discover, the Honda Unicorn, the TVS Victor and the Hero Honda Karizma. Paresh Naik of Vistar Wheels, Panaji, who claims, About 70% of our customers are youth within the age group of 18 to 25 years, endorses the fact that these bikes have found favour with a vast majority of the youth. This passion for power and speed among the younger generation is aptly expressed by Elvis Fernandes, a student, who points out, bikes below 125 cc are definitely out and owning a bike above 150 cc has virtually become the order of the day. While the necessity of a bike cannot be argued about, questions are often raised about the need for speed, brought on by the possession of such bikes. Most youth, however, are collective in their opinion that going at mind- blowing speeds gives them a feeling of euphoria. High speed bikes give the rider a thrill as well as the ability to race with other bikes on the road, voices Reuben D'Mello, a teenager. Indeed, the ardent desire to compete with fellow bikers at 'breakneck' speed has witnessed the rise of a number of bike gangs all across the State. What is alarming is that these races take place in the midst of other vehicular traffic with competitors wearing absolutely no protective gear, not even a helmet, thus putting their own lives and the lives of other travellers at stake. The problem rests in the fact that riders are liable to lose control at high speed or due to an unforeseen obstruction and accidents, often fatal, are inevitable. Statistics from the traffic cell at Altinho-Panjim, show that 1063 bike accidents occurred in Goa in 2005. What is disturbing is that 777 accidents involved riders between 18 to 24 years. So what then are the measures that can be taken to ensure that other youth do not meet with the same bitter fate? Well, it appears that opinions differ widely between all sections of society. Our bikes are top notch, emphatically states Paresh Singbal of the Vasco Bajaj Service Centre. The responsibility lies with the rider who should inculcate good riding skills and show some restraint with regard to speed. Gavin believes that youth is the age to have fun and the threat of over speeding can only be curbed by the smooth operation of traffic signals and greater vigilance on the part of the police. Dy Superintendent of Traffic Police, L S Mamledar states that it is the parents and friends of such youth who must shoulder the responsibility of controlling the recklessness of these brash youngstets. It seems to be a chronic case of all said and little done, for a whopping 49.54% of that occurred in 2005 were the outcome of riders exceeding the speed limit. The bottom line is that while one cannot deny that the 'guardians of the road', who work with blinders on, turn a blind eye to rash driving, equally responsible are the parents who, either to compensate for their absence, or to be one up on the Jonses', give in to these 'high powered' demands of their wards. The crux of the matter therefore, is that while the blame game continues the lives of these young riders and, more often than not, those of innocent, law abiding citizens are being lost everyday. Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- The Yahoogroups-based Britto Boy's Network buoyed pleasant memories to the surface. Reminiscing and going through write-ups by fellow pupils merged the past into the present, creating a seamless time entity. The out-of-the-ordinary relationship with our alma mater is truly inspirational; it has the unique ability to cross frontiers and to travel through time. There is a feeling of a mysterious force luring us closer and closer to our alma mater; like sea of devotees flooding a holy shrine. What's more, the umbilical cord which binds us to our alma mater is compassionate, motivating, and supportive. Its giant reach and captivating might, like tentacles of a giant octopus, is embracing all its alumni joyfully and creating a tide of unprecedented deja vu. Alma mater's mesmerizing power to reach thousands of miles, to all generations of its former students is absolutely thrilling. The build-up of nostalgia and the sense of belonging are hysterically overwhelming. SCHOOL UNIFORM, OVERSIZED BAG As I look at my son in school uniform and over-sized school bag, the memories of yesteryears in St Britto's come flooding through. Every time I take his lessons or look at his school books, I remember my school days and my school teachers. Unconsciously I share all my experiences and my teachers' finer moments with him. I wish for my sons to experience the unique sense of belonging, the way I do, to an institute which molded its past pupils, for generations, into fine men. I brush aside past memories and come back to the present. I am, in a way, connected to school chores. Once again I find myself in the midst of school books, school uniforms, early morning routine of getting my kid ready for school, attending PTA (parent-teacher association) meetings and the like. Now it's the other way around and I am not happy about it; I am the parent and the part I am playing in relation to school activities is not exactly what I wanted, it's not what I had in mind. The envy I feel for children going about their school business is heartbreaking; school days were the most memorable and carefree days of my life, and if possible, I wish to turn the clock back to 70's and once again be part of the school. I have to visit Joshua's school to collect his report card today. I am upbeat about the school visit; it helps to bring fond memories of my school days to the fore. I call out to Joshua and ask him to be quick. We flag down Bus 102 proceeding towards Fahaheel. Joshua and I board the bus and pay 150 fils for the fare. Joshua takes the window seat as usual and I take the only seat left, next to him. We had left our home in Fintas at 5 PM to collect Joshua's school report card. The final report today will decide Joshua's fate; in no certain terms will dictate if he is fit to be in the fourth standard or not. Joshua reminded me about my promise and told me not to go against it; the promise to travel by bus during the school vacation. I usually drive as it is more convenient. SHOUTING, COAXING, OCCASIONAL THRASHING Grudgingly, I conceded to Joshua's request to travel by bus to collect the report card as he had committed himself to study hard. A bit of shouting, coaxing and occasional thrashing was required to keep him in line. Joshua simply loves to travel by bus. The summer heat does not bother him at all. He prefers the bus to a car; he can enjoy the ride for a much longer time and have fun in the sun. He makes the best of it every time he gets a chance to go out. We get off in Mangaf, cross the overhead pedestrian bridge to get on the other side of the freeway. The school is near the highway, barely few minutes of walking. We enter the school compound and after walking through a long corridor and 30 flights of steps we are in Class III C. Joshua's class teacher, Mrs Pereira, greets us. We take our seats and wait for our turn. Two students along with their parents are also waiting for their turn. We are lucky to be third in line. We can overhear the teacher and parents dialog. The usual litany of complains, can-do-better, mischief, playful and such key-words. We proceed towards the front of the class and take

Whatever the case may be, permit me to offer my two cents in this discussion. I would count myself among the 65 millions or so who have read or heard this fictional novel. I have heard it on an audeo CD as I drove around the San Francisco Bay Area in 2005 and found it intriguing! Father Jonathan Morris says Trapdoors always lead down. Water seldom goes up. Like Augustine of Hippo we make attempts to empty the ocean into our own little wells or in the words of Albert Schweitzer Men searching for the historical Jesus look into a deep well, see a reflection of themselves, and call it Lord. None of us has all the knowledge, but we make attempts to tap into that consciousness [trap or tool?] which leads the seeker to experience personally This is Infinite and That is Intimate (Brihadāranyaka Upanishad 5.1.1). My reflections flow from the history of the evolution of consciousness [change unfloding/enfolding - evolution or involution as described by Sri Aurobindu, Theillard de Chardin and others]: A- Jesus of Nazareth, Paul of Tarsus and many others were instrumental in creating a new AWAKENING, which gave rise to Christ with its ethos, culture and civilization. B- The new consciousness as evidenced by the popularity [65 million strong] of the Da Vinci Code, in my opinion, seeks to BALANCE history with the contemporary research, needs and values beyond the accepted/limited Christ of History and Faith - a quest. C- Let us hope that this quest CENTERS on the best within each conscious human being and religious/spiritual culture in the ever shrinking global village, rises beyond insecurity, greed and selfishness and reaches out with greater love to a Civilization with a Heart [Bede Griffiths 1906-1994] towards a Planetary Ecology of Compassion [Gospel of Matthew 25/40], the Golden Rule advocated by most religious and spiritual traditions, D- That once again we may take DELIGHT in and sing with both the heavenly angels and down-to- earth shepherds. This is my wish and prayer Glory to God in Heaven and Peace on Earth to People of Good Will [Lk 2/14]. This is my vision of and mission for the Contemporary Church -Community of Believrs! I agree with a very humble soul, Mahatma Gandhi [1869-1948] who wrote We must be the change we want to see in the world. This change is what I strive for. It is my constant struggle as I seek to Awaken, Balance and Center Delight in the best within every individual and group where the soul glows and grows gracefully with gratitude. Let us be united in supporting one another in this Wonder-filled Adventure of Faith as it unfolds and enfolds in history and eternity! I hope this has helped. Let me know. God bless, Father Ariosto www.SpiritualDirection.org From Foxnews: Fact and Fiction: 'The Da Vinci Code' by Father Jonathan Morris Have you seen the double trapdoor through which Da Vinci critics are falling headfirst? It's hard to miss. Both flaps are adorned with tantalizing signs. The first says, Burn the book, it's the devil. The second laughs mockingly or innocently, Relax, it is just fiction, after all. Trapdoors always lead down. Here's looking up: A little knowledge is dangerous, Mr. Brown, for religion and for life. But a lot of knowledge (and a little humility) makes wise men; men and woman who see God not only in scientific gaps, but in their ability to grasp, if only in part, the grandeur of creation, including themselves. [Goanet] Saligao's consumer and civic network: plenty issues, fewer volunteers

This emerged at the monthly meeting of the volunteer-group, registered as a society in Goa, at the village today. From rainwater drains and 'vaus' (tiny streams) filled with garbage, to a decent Saligao-via-Porvorim-to-Panjim bus service to Panjim, the functioning of local self-government, and the plastic-waste boom... these and a large number of other issues are crying for attention. Our 'vaus' (drains) are filled with rubbish, complained Nicholas Sequeira, while stressing the need for greater village participation to make the collaborative endeavour work. SCCF meets on the second Sunday of each month at Lourdes Convent, the village school. There were plans for launching a collection scheme for villagers' garbage, but this had been placed on the back-burner following feared official objections about government money to citizens' groups. Said Joseph, We first would like to think of the end-point for such a scheme, i.e. where the dumping grounds are going to be. It may be recalled that Saligao hillock and its surroundings, perched atop the village, itself has been the controversial dumping site mainly for garbage from the neighbouring areas, including the Calangute tourism belt. Youth raised concern about the growth in plastics in parts of the village, including around parts of Donvaddo. It was felt that local panch members be called upon to work towards a solution to this issue. Some argued for sports facilities for the village, but others noted that building a mini-stadium in the village monsoonal wetlands -- the 'tollem' area -- would be inadvisable. Former sarpanch Joaquim Monteiro pointed out that the village lacked a suitable land, lying in north-south direction (to avoid the direct glare on the players) for building a permanent football ground. As of now, there are two half-year grounds, where football is played in alternation with the paddy crops which take up the monsoon season. Some members present pointed to the possibility of planning for the same on the Sangolda end of the village, along a barren hilltop. Plans for renovation of the fairly ramshackled Saligao market were also taken up. It was announced that the post office was likely to shift to the local 'shalla' (school), which has been seeing a decline in its student population. But one view was that the comunidade building on the venue should not be interferred with. Lawrence pointed to the different telephone schemes which allow phone subscribers to reduce their monthly billings. There are a number of different schemes, tailormade for heavy-duty phone users and those wanting only incoming calls, with names like Plan150, India Plan 1 Rs, Plan 1490, Plan 990, Plan-490 (no rent), Plan 240, etc. But one needs to be aware of these plans and apply for the same to take advantage. Issues that came up included getting a listing of all timings of buses passing through the village, stopping of dumping of mud in local fields, and usage of the Right to Information law to ferret out information of importance to villagers. See http://egov.goa.nic.in/rtipublic It was also thought important to download electoral rolls of Saligao, now available in cyberspace along with those of other villages and towns in Goa. Non-issuing of receipts by vendors (to dodge on tax payments), the proliferating plastic use in shops and outlets, and the growth of the discarded plastic (PET) bottle menace in the village was also discussed. Issues like the panchayat budget and illegal constructions in the village -- including the building of 'rooms' to rent out to migrant workers without any toilet facilities -- were among the matters raised. Lack of cooperation from some quarters in the panchayat, the dumping of garbage and waste in local drains, and a recent explosion in a local unit of some LPG gas cylinders was also noted. Of course, we know about the commonsense examples you have provided regarding the departure of the British from India but I was hopeful I'd find some written lamentations that Goanetters or others may know about. As regards your point about East African Indians, and departure of the British from there, once again, I would find it helpful if you were able to provide, if at all possible, written lamentations rather than perhaps hearsay. I am not inclined to pursue my question further if there is no firm evidence. ideally in written form. Regards Cornel PS Your Konkani saying re one dies after someone else's death is interesting and I had not heard it before. However, when older couples have lived long together and one dies, the survivor tends not to live too long after the first death. But our learned medical doctors on GX may be able to throw more light on this observation. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: goanet@goanet.org Sent: Saturday, May 13, 2006 7:21 PM Subject: [Goanet] Lament about the Portuguese departure Hi Cornel, There is a Konkani saying, No one dies after someone else's death. This in spite of the vigorous lamentation at the funeral. Goans who cry about the Portuguese departure are Goans who lost out economically and socially with that departure. Hence the tears are for their own plight; rather than love for the Portuguese or Salazar or some exoteric principle. Similarly if one was socially or economically dependent on the British, one lamented about their departure. This applied to the Anglo-Indians and the British who were used to the colonial lifestyle of leisure and luxury. The lamentations also applied to the puppet Indian rajas, ranis and nawabs whose opulent existence (and 21 gun salute) was dependent on the British. And the same applied to those Goans and Indians whose occupation, social life, standing or club memberships was connected to / dependent on the British. This was like the E. African Indians lamenting the British departure from East Africa. Kind Regards, GL --- cornel: I have noted, like others on Goanet that, there are those who lament the departure of the Portuguese following Indian military action in December 1961. I wonder if there are examples of similar Goan/Indian lament when Britain left India. I am just curious to discover if there are some historical parallels/comparisons in the two situations. Perhaps the question also applies to the French exit from India. Cornel _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Goanet mailing list (Goanet@goanet.org) _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- It was quite an eventful past week since it took me out of Goa in a long long time. And the thought of having to make a dash to Bombay for any reason whatsoever has been like wanting to run the other way. The very thought of keeping a clean and scented kerchief ready to hide the nose once landed there to avoid all sorts of smells starting from Sion and the onward journey through the dreaded Dharavi was revolting. Naturally, I am talking of a bus trip to Bombay So this time when I had to make a dash to now Mumbai for a day for a business meet, I fortified myself saying that it was only for a day. But when I landed at Sion via the expensive Volvo, things looked different. In fact things smelled different. Moreover, at 9.00 a.m. there was no choking air pollution. Clean! When I passed through Dharavi, I forgot I had to tie up my face. Still no smell. In fact Dharavi didn't look like Dharavi at all with the normal sight of people doing their job on the roadsides. Later, my brother would tell me that should I visit Dharavi a year from now, I would fail to recognize it as Dharavi. The day, of course, was all surprises. Clean air against all expectations. CNG?. And to find this clean atmosphere in good old Mumbai, I would have thought it was bordering on the impossible. I would find Mapusa, Margao, Ponda, Vasco and even Panjim more polluted, dirty and stinking than anywhere I happened to be in Mumbai, which was South of Santa Cruz. And I positively failed to spot a single piece of plastic or a plastic wrapped 'potli' (parcel) lying quietly along the roadside like we find umpteen of them everywhere in Goa. And unlike our roads in Goa, even in Panjim city, the roads in Mumbai are clean swept and one fails to even notice a street sweeper anywhere in sight after 7 a.m. unlike in Goa, where our municipal cleaners observe bank timings. And the traffic movement was swift and easy with all those fly-overs which makes Bombay not look like good old Bombay or Mumbai at all. And it was a blessed surprise for me to have been moving on the 2.5 kilometer fly-over in the heart of Commercial Mumbai Central area, the longest one I have traveled on, except in Bangkok or in Lagos, Nigeria, etc. And all the time since my entry into Mumbai, I was troubled by just one question. Why not Goa? If Mumbai could be transformed into something like this for me to appreciate it and force me to eat my previous revulsion at the same time, my thoughts immediately moved over to Sanjay Dutt. For I, at that time, could have convinced him to hand over to me his AK-47, if he still had it with him, so I could come to Goa bindass, like Praveen Mahajan, and have a field day spilling the garbage at its prestigious dumping site - The New Legislative Secretariat at Porvorim. Hopefully, Sanjay Dutt will start doing just that, the next time he comes a shooting at the Associacao Academica grounds at Moira just like Shakti Kapoor did it on the lawns of the Marriot in Panjim a fortnight or so ago. And the Amma from Chennai must be feeling sorry all over for having lost her cradle to her old, wily, dark glasses wearing detractor. But most of all she must be feeling sorrier for having spent all that foreign exchange to supply all the TN workers, working in labour camps of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait what have you, with telephone cards to call back home and convince the folks at home that they should vote for Amma dearest. Maybe she should have offered Mercedes Benz's and cute looking brides to these gentlemen to compete with the dark glasses wearing naughty boy who gave not only the telephone cards but also colour TVs, fifteen thousand bucks per marriage and a bagful of rice at Rs. 2/- per kg. The important thing to watch now is the population explosion that will have poor Amma grounded for good in time to come. If Sonia Gandhi had the effrontery to resign from her Lok Sabha seat to hide from the Office of Profit and come up a winner with a margin of over 4 lakh votes, all at the cost of stupid taxpayers like me, then there is nothing left in this country that is worth calling democratic politics. And for sure, Mrs. Das Munshi, who won her seat to keep company to her husband as a high profile Cong Man, must be feeling elated that at least one of her subjects has not only voted for her but has been ready to break his head like a narial (coconut), falling prostate at her feet in public view, and console

The fact remains that some of our Goans still refuse to accept that good things can come from Portugal too. If one Goan publicly writes a good thing about Portugal, 20 other people will criticise him/her regardless of what he/she has written is true or not. I have come across several curriculum vitae from some Goans who have asked me for advice on how to get a job here in the UK. Most of these Goans have recently come from Goa as Portuguese citizens. Usually, you write your citizenship in a cv/resume, right? Well, instead of writing Portuguese Citizen, these Goans often write European Citizen. It is almost like they want to hide their relation to Portugal - their own country of citizenship! They are not aware of how ridiculous this situation is at the eyes of a potential employer. Of course I do not save any words of criticism to these shameful Goans! They are nothing else but opportunists. Hopefully, employers pick up on these things and I know many do. A person who hides his/her own citizenship cannot be trusted. I would immediately bin a cv of a person who writes European Citizen as citizenship. One has to be proud of the citizenship one holds regardless of one's origin. Employers know extremely well which countries are in Europe and which are part of the European Union. If one writes European Citizen instead of writing his country of citizenship, that can only mean he/she is hiding something. And a cv/resume needs to be as clear as possible. What is the reason why anybody should feel shy to make publicly known on this forum that the commemorative postcard to honour Abbe Faria is going to be issued by Portugal (instead of attributing this gesture to the European Union)? There is not going to be a European postcard but a Portuguese postcard. Dom Martin approached the postal administrations of three countries directly associated with the Abbe: of Portugal, of France and of India. The Portuguese Postal Administration was the only one, of the three, to respond favourably, even though Dom's approach was made after the 2006 programme of postal issues had already been approved for execution. The issue of the Abbe Faria commemorative postcard on the 31st of this month has therefore to be taken as being made extra-programme and as a special gesture to honour the great scientist who, during his lifetime, brought glory not only to France where he developed and practiced his theory on hypnotism but also to Portugal, the country of which he was a citizen, and to his native land of Goa. - Dom is, I understand, hopeful that the Indian and French Postal Administrations will give due consideration to his request (supported by a number of signatures) in 2007. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: Being Goan, in a sea of Chinese and Malay... and beyond

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- BEING GOAN, IN A SEA OF CHINESE AND MALAY...

The music, sound and the trio immerse in the melody ensure that year after year, the Music Company is only happy when its music and the jubilant crowd they pull, are proof enough. KURT GIDWANI walks the retro route The three musicians that form Music Company aren't strangers to Goa as a music destination. All of them have been involved with music in one way or another since the 70s. Music Company -- Alex and Nini on guitar and Marino on drums, he also plays bass notes on the keyboard -- as a trio, the Music Company in in its fourth year. The need to come back, form a band and have some fun was because of their incessant desire to fuel their passion. The musical trio is professionally in different professions, and they delight in moonlighting as 'the three boys who love to go retro'. We decided to play music that we love. And the best part is the people love it as well. It was a conscious decision to just play retro and not give in to the commercial aspect of being a band. That's one big reason why we also don't do private shows like weddings, and the like. We have a lot of fun playing our music and that's the way we like it, says Alex. When Music Company plays and sings, it's hard to sit in one place and listen to them. You tend to let your feet do the talking as your heart warms to their tunes. At the shows, the passion for music is so evident and the crowd they pull are really something, especially in the monsoon when all the locals and tourists flock to Cavala where they perform to a packed house. Their set list ranges from Simon and Garfunkle to the Police, Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, etc. Alex, who is an ad man by profession, elaborates, What we enjoy most about performing is playing what we like and the rush when we see people from all works of life enjoying themselves completely. The feedback right through has been phenomenal! The Music Company sound has also drifted across the state's border and they've performed to large crowds in Bangalore and Hyderabad. In fact, Bangalore loved them so much that they've already been there five times... and counting! In the season, Wednesday nights at Cidade de Goa and Friday nights at Cavela, is when they come alive with the ad man (Alex), real estate man (Nini) and the computer pro (Marino). Most locals don't come out that much during the season, because of the days that we end up performing on. But in the monsoon, we have a blast! The Saturday night monsoon specials at Cavala have been a big hit so far and this monsoon we're not going to disappoint anyone as we know how much people like our music, Alex adds. They've often thought of recording something of their own, but, The biggest challenge is coming together to practice. We hardly get a chance to meet but for the two nights when we perform. We know the music that we play. We've even done a track or two extempore, explains Alex. The months of April and May are when Music Company takes a break, to recuperate and prepare for the coming months. This is when the band will have time to work on the new tracks they will belt out as the rain also approves, in the monsoon. They definitely have plans to mesmerise their audience with some more retro fever. Alex, Nini and Marino would like to play for as long as they can, dishing out music to the crowds that throng to the shows. As long as we enjoy playing and people enjoy our music, we'll be there. We have a blast every show that we do. It's just three of us, but we sound great. And we'd like to keep doing that for as long as we can! they conclude. Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- PUC professor off to India on Fulbright scholarship Napa Valley Register By Register Staff Thursday, May 11, 2006 1:13 AM PDT When Dr. Victoria Mukerji applied for the highly competitive Fulbright Scholarship nine months ago, she hardly told a soul because she was so sure she wasn't going to win. Mukerji said she has dreamed of getting a Fulbright scholarship since she was a little girl, and the news that she had been chosen took her by surprise. I'm very, very happy, she said. Mukerji, an associate professor of visual arts at Pacific Union College, has been awarded the scholarship to teach at Goa University in India for six months. Part of her primary assignment at the university will be to help establish a curriculum in media and culture. Mukerji said she is excited about how her film and media background can be put to good use. The International Film Festival of India has just made Goa its permanent home with the goal of becoming the Cannes of Asia. The anthropologist in Mukerji is anxious to observe the effect of this event on the local population. What impact is this high profile, globalized, celebrity attraction going to have on the local culture? And how is the indigenous culture going to effect this event? Mukerji said. Mukerji, whose family is Indian, has spent the majority of her adult life in India. While she was working on her dissertation for her Ph.D. in anthropology from UC Berkeley, she went to India for her research into intellectual identity formation in the post-colonial world. She ended up spending 18 years in India working as an anthropologist, filmmaker and advertising executive. I made a commitment to India, she said. I'm thrilled to be going back. While Mukerji studied many aspects of India, the state of Goa is one geographic and cultural area that remained a bit of a mystery to her. Goa has an unusual colonial history. While most of India was colonized by the British, Goa remained under Portuguese control until 1961. Mukerji produced a documentary about the cathedrals of Goa for the Smithsonian and her experience in Goa left her wanting to know more. The place I'm going to is unique in India, Mukerji said. I know India pretty well having lived there for so long, but this is Christian and Portuguese India, it's very different. Mukerji started teaching at PUC eight years ago and her broad background is put to use in several departments. In addition to teaching for the visual arts department, she also teaches for the communication department, the psychology and social work department, and the honors program. When her documentary film class premiered a film recently, she talked about how proud she is to see her students' accomplishments. I thought the highest emotion, the proudest moment, would come from seeing my film completed, she said. But I was wrong. The proudest moment comes when you see students that you have helped nurture complete their project. http://www.napavalleyregister.com/articles/2006/05/11/news/local/iq_3420 197.txt ~(^^)~ Avelino _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] Goa airport to have new terminal with 4 aero-bridges

Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- Goa airport to have new terminal with 4 aero-bridges deepikaglobal.com Panaji, May 13 (UNI) In a bid to cope with the burgeoning air traffic, particularly from abroad, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in collaboration with the Indian Navy had planned to build a modern new terminal with four aero-bridges to facilitate landing of wide bodied aircrafts as part of strengthening the Goa airport. The Union cabinet is likely to give a green signal on May 15 to this proposal discussed at length at a high-level meeting Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel had with goa Deputy Chief Minister Dr Wilfred De Souza, AII chairman K Ramalingam, Deputy Chief of Naval staff Vice Admiral G S Bedi, secretary Ajay Prasad and joint secretary Sanjay Narain of the Ministry in New Delhi yesterday. Briefing media persons about the outcome of the meeting soon after his return here from Delhi today, Mr. D'Souza said the AAI would soon acquire nine acre land from the Navy and start extending the airport apron to facilitate landing of bigger crafts besides pressing into service the instrument landing facility to operate in nights. The Navy, which has been controlling the Goa airport, has agreed to allow direct landing of all the scheduled flights to Goa instead of Mumbai shortly, even as Air India is considering starting a direct flight from Dubai to Goa and back, Dr D'Souza said. Several of the foreign private airlines including Virgin Airlines from Europe, Lufthansa from Frankfurt and Midland from Manchester and Air Arabia from Sharjah were ready to run their flights directly to Goa avoiding circuitous routes, he said. They were examining the economic viability of such direct operations while the Union Ministry was studying the reciprocity of running flights directly from Goa to respective foreign destinations, he said. All these steps were to strengthen the existing airport in Goa to meet the projected future traffic which was expected to run 4308 international flights and 17,480 domestic flights by the year 2013-14 as against 1402 and 7422 flights respectively in 1995-96. The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) would soon be asked to close its road running across the airport runway and operate its traffic through an alternative route to facilitate expansion of the airport without any hitch. There was no provision at the Sea Bird naval base now at Karwar in neighboring Karnataka for landing of the military aircrafts and hence the question of INS Hansa's shifting from Goa would not arise he said quoting the vice admiral. Asked whether this development meant giving up of the proposal of setting up a modern airport at Mopa in North Goa, Dr D'Souza said it was for the six-member central committee headed by-Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane to decide. He however added South Goa MP Churchil Alemao, who launched a vociferous campaign against Mopa airport that sharply divided even the ruling Congress in the state, was happy over the current development. http://www.deepikaglobal.com/ENG3_sub.asp?catcode=subcatcode=newscode= 139310 ~(^^)~ Avelino _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Confirm your bookings early or miss-out Visit http://www.garcabranca.com for details/booking/confirmation. --- Goans rock Diplomatic Club; Stacy crowned May Queen 5/14/2006 3:3:59 The Peninsula It is a day which all Doha-based Goans count with every passing day as the D day closes in. On Thursday night the much awaited night unfolded itself. The Diplomatic Club in Doha was the venue of the May ball hosted by the Goan Welfare Association. A venue and occasion which found young of all ages making a bee line for the event. The event saw the crowning of the May Queen. The gates to the venue opened at night and the show wound in the early hours of Friday. A crowd close to one thousand swung their bodies to the beats of the music belted out by a band from Goa, Lynx. Back home in tourist areas foreign tourists swing their bodies to the beats of trance music. At the Diplomatic Club here the Goans danced on the narrow, crammed floor space with the gusto, a floor where walking was difficult and dancing required special skills. The crowds took everything in their stride while several of them preferred to watch the action sitting. The security men ensured that decorum and order ran on the floor while also keeping the eager fans at bay. Fans were making a beeline to have the autograph of their favourite actor Rajeev Khandewall and Preeti Jhangani. The two were flown in to add glamour to the show. The chief guest on the occasion was Goa Labour Minister Luizinho Faleiro. He was accompanied by his wife. The actor did not disappoint his fans as he signed autographs, posed with fans for pictures and even sang a song from one of his TV serials. The ball's high point was the crowning of the May Queen and although it took away a trifle over an hour going through the motions with 32 contestants in the race, it was Stacy DMello who won the honour. The queen walked away with several prizes from the organizers, one of which entitled her to an air ticket to Bali in Indonesia or Goa. Majority of the contestants were Goans while the others were from Poona in India, Nepal and Phillipines. Stacy DMello smarted them all with her stage poise and her cool in answering questions thrown at her. Incidentally she had bagged the queen contest a couple of years back at a dance held here and organised by another Goan club. The place abounded with a belle of beauties of Goan origin, some of whom preferred not to be in the spotlight and the catwalk, while others developed cold feet facing the crowd. The crowd had no age barriers, children, old people all made their way to the Diplomatic Club. Children also added special colour to the dance. On the occasion Lynx belted out their music numbers, majority of them in English with a mix of Punjabi pop, Konkani and Hindi to give an all round flavour. The band also released a CD of music compiled by them. The organisers, Goan Welfare association, have promised to donate the proceeds from the event to orphan children back in Goa. For their part, the Goan based here had fun, frolic and shook hands or had a glimpse of their favourite film stars. They also contributed to help their brethren back home by buying the QR100 tickets for the show. How far their help materialises back home is a tricky issue. http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/Display_news.asp?section=Local_Newssub section=Qatar+Newsmonth=May2006file=Local_News200605143359.xml ~(^^)~ Avelino _ Do not post admin requests to the list. The three-day extravaganza of 'Wine and Haute Cuisine Festival' called 'The Grape Escapade' is witnessing hordes of tourists visiting the sprawling Inox Multiplex courtyard in the capital to enjoy good food and music. The event, inaugurated by Governor SC Jamir yesterday, is a unique cultural experience as it brings together international wine-makers and local brewers, patrons, hoteliers and professionals from the entertainment and fashion world under one umbrella, said Goa Tourism Development Corporation Chairperson Fatima D'Sa. Performances by Russian ballerinas and songs presented by Sigmund D'Souza and Lulu Fortess (Trio)'s Goan voices in harmony and O Purple Rain band enthralled the audiences. To set the tone and ambience for the event, the organisers got Goa's Fransisco Martins to erect a European village setting in the background of Inox Multiplex. The festival also featured food courts, which presented culinary delights from across the globe, comprising of international fusion cuisine to wine tasting sessions by winers besides delectable deserts. Six noted winers, two each from Goa and Pune and one each from Nashik and Bangalore, displayed their exotic products for wine tasters while five-star hotels from the island state served their delicacies. Several ministers and bureaucrats including chief secretary JB Singh visited the venue to catch a glimpse of the glittering event which is expected to become an annual event to promote 365-day tourism in a big way in Goa. The objective behind this fiesta of flavours, being organised for the second consecutive year, is to encapsulate the vivacity of the Goan lifestyle highlighting the multi-cultural influences and artistic passions to brand the state as a lifestyle destination, Ms D'Sa said. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1697284,001100020009.htm ~(^^)~ Avelino _ Do not post admin requests to the list.
