Goans push for high profile role

An expatriate club over 50 years old is set to revive its once active role in
charitable causes and cultural activities when it moves to new premise by
early next year.

The Young Goans Club (YGC) has been desperate to restore its once thriving
membership after it was forced to vacate from its Hoora location on an order
by the then Labour and Social Affairs Ministry last March.

The club received many complaints from neighbours, who strongly objected to
the selling of alcohol at the bar inside.

Club officials say they have found a location near Gudaibiya and will not be
serving alcohol at the new premises. It is now negotiating with landowners to
finalise the final location of the club.

We have narrowed down the likely sites to three venues and are negotiating
to find a fixed premises, said acting president Cassius Pereira.

The new site location will be close to Gudaibiya, where the majority of the
members stay.

We currently don't have an ideal place to convene all our events, but we
look forward to having a new premises that will allow us to go about our
planned social events and charity activities, he told the GDN.

Our aim is to be involved in more social activities so that we as a small
community can reach out to a larger community.

Mr Pereira said the club would operate according to rules that govern their
activities, well without serving alcohol at the new premises.

We don't need it anymore, and we will go ahead with our planned activities
without it, he said. Alcohol doesn't play a big role.

Mr Pereira said the main focus of club officials is to rally the support of
the members.

Right now we only need to set up an office to re-establish the reputation
that we've had for over 50 years, he said.

Our plan is to launch a new campaign of social, sports, and cultural
activities, which the club has been known for in the past.

Mr Pereira called on members to come forward and support the revival of what
he described as one of the oldest and most popular expatriate clubs in
Bahrain's history.

Many members are relaxed about the issue and we need them to become more
active and involved in club issues, he said.

We are very optimistic about the new site, but one of the reasons we have
been slow in the revival process is the lack of response from members.

We have 150 members and we hope the setting up of the new premises will
encourage the dormant members to come forward and renew their memberships and
take more part in our activities.

Mr Pereira said there were approximately 450 dormant members.

We're also looking forward to being active participants in the National Day
celebrations and supporting the Social Development Ministry in their various
programmes.

The club will mark its 52nd anniversary today with a mass at 7.45pm at the
Sacred Heart Church, in Manama.

For further information, contact Mr Pereira on 39660475.

STACY D'Mello, a Goan girl who grew up in Doha, was crowned the May Ball Queen
at a function organised by the Goan Welfare Association (GWA) at the
Diplomatic Club.

Stacy, who works for Qatar Airways, walked away with loads of gifts. These
included a gold necklace from Prakkat Jewellery, a Doha-Mumbai-Doha air ticket
from Regency Travel Tours, seven nights' free stay either at Bali or Goa
from the Royal Goan Beach Club, a Westar watch and dinner for two at the Four
Seasons Hotel, Doha.

The first runner-up was Nishita Irani and second runner-up Amanda D'Costa.

Thirty-two contestants vied for the crown. Although most were Goans some
participants were some from Mumbai and Pune (India), Nepal, Kuwait and the
Philippines. Some of the guests came from Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.

Stacy D'Mello's poise and composure helped her walk away with the crown.

The judges were Qatar Airways official Archie D'Mello, 1991 Miss India second
runner-up Sakala Debras, and Hindi films and TV serials director Glen Barretto.

The Lynx band entertained the crowd.

Earlier, the event was officially opened by GWA president Simon D'Silva after
a march-past. He welcomed chief guest Luizinho Faleiro, Goa's Minister for
Industries and Education, his wife Rachel and daughter Rania, Bollywood
celebrities Rajeev Khandelwal, Preeti Jhangiani, and Glen Barretto, Indian
Ambassador Dr George Joseph, and Carmo Santos, president of the Goan Welfare
Society in Kuwait.

Updesh Swar compered the show. Swar was flown to Qatar specially for the
function.

Lynx mixed its repertoire of English songs with Punjabi pop, Konkani and
Hindi numbers. Rachel Faleiro released a CD of music compiled by the band.

Simon D'Silva presented mementos to the main guests.

DJ Mario had the audience grooving with a good choice of songs.

Advert in Herald:

The family of late Carmo Dias, Alleamvaddo, Chinchinim, would like to express
their deepest appreciation to Mr Churchill Alemao, Honourable Member of
Parliament, for spending lot of his valuable time, his efforts and great
struggle with the higher authorities in getting the mortal remains of Carmo
Dias to Goa instead of cremating in the Cayman Islands.
We will always remain extremely grateful to Mr Churchill Alemao.

Related News item:
The South Goa Congress MP, Mr Churchill Alemao today disclosed that he had
been informed by the Indian High Commission in Jamaica that the body of the
late Carmo Dias from Chinchinim who died under unexplained circumstances at
Grand Cayman Island had been airlifted by Delta Air Logistics and the same
would be reaching Goa on May 6.
Mr Alemao informed that the shipment had been booked right up to Goa and would
arrive by IC-865 from Mumbai. The MP stated that after taking up the issue
with the Prime Ministers Office and the Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi,
he had recommended the secretary, external affairs ministry in New Delhi to
ensure through the Indian High Commission in Jamaica that the body of the late
Carmo Dias should not be buried in Cayman Islands, but instead be sent to Goa,
as per the wishes of his mother, Ms Ana Francisca Dias and other family
members.
The MP also wrote to MP of Goan origin, House of Commons, Mr Keith Vaz for
help. The late Carmo Dias was working as a security guard at National Archive
in Cayman Island was attacked while on duty by two unknown persons on January
6 and was later admitted to a city hospital in a serious condition.
He succumbed to injuries on March 8. Prior to Mr Alemaos intervention, the
Cayman Island government had issued a deadline of April 25, stating that if
the family would bear half the cost of transporting the body, then there would
be no other alternative but to bury at Cayman Islands itself within 48 hours
by notification from the Government of Cayman Island.
According to Mr Alemao it was only after several telephonic calls that he made
to the Prime Ministers Office and to the secretary of external affairs
ministry, the calls made by the Indian High Commissioner, Mr Agarwal and Mr
Bimal Saigal had a high level meeting with the Cayman Island government not to
burry the body at the Cayman Island and instead send it to Goa.
Mr Alemao also promised that he will fight for due compensation from the late
Carmo Dias employer, Mr Andyx Cott to family of the deceased.

[Goanet] 'DOING BUSINESS IN INDIA' SEMINAR AT HANNOVER

2006-04-29 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Doing business with India is a win-win proposition – this was the message
conveyed by Indian participants at a largely attended panel discussion
on Attractiveness of India as an Investment Destination as part of a day-
long Seminar on Doing Business in India, which was organized by the
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and KPMG in
Hannover today. Investing in India is being simplified for the benefit of
foreign investors, Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State for Commerce
Industry, said while urging the German industry to come and be a part of the
Indian growth process. Other leading participants in the discussion included
Dr. Ajay Dua, Secretary (Industrial Policy Promotion), Ministry of Commerce
Industry; Mr. Saroj K Poddar, President, FICCI; Mr. V.R.S. Natrajan,
Chairman Managing Director, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd.; Dr. Laszio Straub,
Vice President , Corporate Development, Knorr-Bremse; and Dr. Sibylle Bartels-
Hetzler, Member of the Board, KPMG, Germany. The Minister also released a
FICCI-KPMG publication titled Investing in India, which brings out the
emergence of India as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and
the various steps taken to encourage foreign investment into India including
the process of lowering FDI caps in different sector which was being
judiciously done.

Dr. Dua reiterated that the total factor productivity in Indian industry was
much higher than in other emerging economies and had become a major reason for
India's emergence as an FDI destination. Not only does India enjoy advantages
in terms of availability and remuneration for labour but also there are
considerably opportunities in India to substitute labour intensive processes
for capital intensive activities. Also the vast domestic market for most
consumer and durable goods and its rapid growth due to higher disposable
incomes in hands of young population have made India an ideal domestic growth
led market economy. By whichever criterion middle class is identified, the
purchasing power in hands of Indian urban class as well as rural rich is
growing and their appetite for consumer and white goods is growing, Dr. Dua
said.

He also highlighted India's large production of agricultural goods like
cotton, tea, pulses and milk besides huge reserves of iron ore, bauxite and
coal. The high-savings rate of 29% in India was flagged as an added factor for
undertaking new investments in India by Dr. Dua. Reinforcing the message, Mr.
Poddar said 70% of foreign companies investing in India were making profits
and urged German companies to consider India in your investment goals and
look at India with interest and enthusiasm.

The liberalization of rules and regulations in India, according to Dr. Dua,
had unleashed a spirit of enterprise and promoted trade, both domestic and
foreign. This combined with the diligence and discipline of India's labour
force had contributed to the significant economic growth witnessed in India in
recent years, he pointed out, adding that this growth would further accelerate
once the physical infrastructure of power, roads and ports got improved.

The two other panel discussions held today as part of Doing Business with
India event were panel discussions on: Regulatory Aspects of Starting
Business in India and Entry Strategies for SMEs to India.

BJP leader Pramod Mahajan shot at, critical

April 22, 2006 09:37 IST
Last Updated: April 22, 2006 18:54 IST

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Pramod Mahajan was in a highly critical
condition after an attempt on his life in Mumbai this morning by his younger
brother who shot him several times in the lower chest and abdomen.
  Who is Pravin Mahajan?
After a four-hour emergency surgery to deal with critical injuries in his
liver, lower chest, abdomen and pancreas, the doctors said that the BJP
general secretary's condition was 'quite critical' and that he had been put on
ventilator.
Four bullets that caused extensive damage and massive bleeding in Mahajan's
liver and other organs were not removed during the surgery at the Hinduja
hospital by a team of doctors. He was given 25 bottles of blood to make up for
the blood loss.
Major bleeding stopped after the surgery but he is still oozing blood from
the extensive liver injury, according to Dr Anupam Verma, dean of the
hospital.
The shooting incident took place at Mahajan's 14th floor apartment in Worli
around 8 am after heated arguments between him and his younger brother Pravin,
according to the police who said that the assailant went to a police station
later, surrendered with the revolver and was arrested.
What motivated the attack remained unclear with police as well as the third
Mahajan brother Prakash discounting earlier reports that property dispute was
the cause.
Pravin's lawyer Nand Kumar Rajurkar claimed that he was mentally ill. I am
not aware whether Pravin shot at his brother but certainly I know that Pravin
is mentally ill and needs psychiatric treatment, he told reporters.
Pramod's maternal uncle Vibhakar Mirajkar said it was not property dispute
but an inferiority complex that may have led Pravin to fire at his brother.
As far as I know there was no property except for a small plot of land,
which Pramod had purchased in Ambajogai in Marathwada region several years
ago, Mirajkar told PTI.
Mirajkar, a lecturer with a local college, said Pravin was not friendly with
the other two brothers and kept away from family functions and get togethers.
Pravin always remained aloof from the main family, Mirajkar said.
Pramod helped Pravin in several ways and we are at a loss to understand
what led him to take such a step, Mirajkar said.
Pravin has been charged with attempt to murder and was interrogated for
about 6 hours before being sent to J J Hospital for analyzing his mental state.
56-year-old Mahajan's wife and some other family members witnessed the
shocking incident after which his brother-in-law Gopinath Munde and a doctor,
both staying in the same apartment complex, rushed him to the hospital.
As the news of Mahajan being shot at spread, a large number of BJP
supporters rushed to the hospital and police had a tough time controlling the
crowd.
Top BJP leaders, including L K Advani, Rajnath Singh and M Venkaiah Naidu
also rushed to Mumbai. After visiting Mahajan in the Intensive Care Unit,
Advani said, In this situation, only prayers can help.
Hundreds of BJP workers made a beeline to donate blood at the hospital on
hearing that their leader was in need of B+ blood.
Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was in constant touch with
Mahajan's family.
Shiv Sena leaders Manohar Joshi, Uddhav Thackarey, film personalities Hema
Malini and Madhur Bhandarkar, Maharashtra Ministers Chagan Bhujbal and Dilip-
Walse Patil visited the hospital to enquire about Mahajan's condition.

Goan band Lynx to play at Doha May Queen Ball

Published: Wednesday, 12 April, 2006, 11:38 AM Doha Time

Staff Reporter

THE Goan Welfare Association (GWA), Qatar, is to organise the sixth annual May
Queen Ball on May 11, 2006 at the Diplomatic Club from 8pm. Indian band Lynx
will perform at the dinner-dance programme.
The highlight of the event will be crowning of the May Queen by Bollywood
stars who will attend the function.

Lynx has been around for more than a decade and has played in Dubai. After the
Doha show, the band will perform in England on May 13.

Lynx came on the music scene in Goa when bands played only country and pop.
The band’s music is immensely enjoyable, the organisers said.
Goan host Updesh Swar will compere the show.

The quality of the Doha May Queen ball has improved tremendously over the
years with the support of sponsors and participants, said association
president Simon D’Silva. This time too, it will be a memorable event with
15,000 watts of sound and lively lights producing magical effects, said
D’Silva.

Last year programme had been a huge success though the show was postponed at
the last minute due to some technical glitch. The association organises major
events in keeping with the traditional Goan hospitality, cultural heritage and
music, the president said.

[Goanet] I want to become Prime Minister, says Advani

I want to become Prime Minister, says Advani

Wednesday, 05 April , 2006, 17:17

New Delhi: Senior BJP leader L K Advani, who recently expressed keenness on a
change in his party's image, said factors like infighting and corruption do
hurt the party.

The Leader of the Opposition also said he would like to be Prime Minister.
When asked if he was worried about BJP, Advani, who quit as party president in
the wake of the row he had triggered with the RSS over his comments on
Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in 2005, said, The general phrase used
is 'Congressisation' of the BJP. Infighting, factionalism, corruption... All
these things... They do hurt.

To a question whether he wanted to be the Prime Minister, the former deputy
Prime Minister said, I don't see anything wrong in wanting to be... liking to
be (Prime Minister).

That's for the party and everyone to decide... Very often even the parties do
not decide these matters... These happen themselves, he remarked adding the
choice for the top job depended on varying factors.

During the interview, the former deputy Prime Minister also regretted what he
called gradual political degeneration in the country after 1947.
Let me say that prior to 1947, when we got freedom, gradually things started
degenerating and gradually it came to a point that politics did not remain
what it is in other democracies, Advani said.

He, however, said he did not feel out of place in what he perceives as a
changed political environment. It's not difficult... I have seen so many
people who have contributed so much without getting anything in return,
Advani said, when asked whether he found uncomfortable in the present
political environment.

[Goanet] Anil Kakodkar to visit Vienna to talk N-safeguards

2006-04-04 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Kakodkar to visit Vienna to talk N-safeguards

Sunday, 02 April , 2006

Mumbai: Top nuclear scientist and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission
Anil Kakodkar will visit Vienna this week for talks with the IAEA on a
safeguards accord proposed under the Indo-US nuclear deal to pave the way for
resumption of nuclear fuel for Indian reactors.

Kakodkar will also discuss with IAEA representatives an Additional Protocol as
agreed in the Indo-US nuclear deal reached during the visit of President
George W Bush last month. Read: Left meets Right on nuclear agreement

The plan to separate India's civilian and military nuclear facilities provides
for an India-specific safeguards agreement to be negotiated with the IAEA.

New Delhi has sought such an agreement since India is neither a member of the
NPT nuclear powers comprising the P-5 countries nor it comes under the
category of non-Nuclear Weapon States.

This is a process the AEC Chairman will be undertaking at Vienna prior to
tripartite arrangement with the US.

This process would involve the understanding as well as putting forth India's
stance on the nuances of the 'India specific' safeguards.

This process is very essential as a preparation to deal with the Nuclear
Suppliers' Group from whom India is expected to buy its future nuclear plants
to increase the electricity base capacity which will be put under IAEA
safeguards, a top DAE official said.

Safeguards of IAEA are to prevent diversion of nuclear material for weapon's
programme. They are complemented by controls on the export of sensitive
technology from countries such as UK and the USA through NSG.

[Goanet] Indian govt concerned about NRI’s welfare, says minister

2006-03-21 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
THE Government of India is deeply concerned about the welfare of the 4mn
Indians working abroad and the country’s foreign policies are framed taking
into account this factor, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs E
Ahmed yesterday said.

Addressing a community reception at the Indian Cultural Centre last night, the
minister announced that the government would accord top priority to solve the
problems being faced by its people working overseas.
Introduction of open houses to bring the missions to the people has been
highly appreciated by all.

Tomorrow, I will take up a number of issues with the Indian ambassadors to
the countries in the region at a meeting scheduled in Doha, he said.
Among them are shortage of staff at various Indian embassies in the Gulf,
major problems faced by the Indian expatriate community and ways and means to
strengthen bilateral relations.

Referring to Qatar, the minister observed that it was a home away from home
for him and he enjoyed the hospitality of the people in Qatar. India-Qatar
ties have grown to the level of strategic relations.

About the recently concluded India-US nuclear agreement, the minister
reiterated that it was in the best interest of India. Every Indian should be
proud of his country. We never succumb to external pressure.

Regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, the minister said Iran has every right to
conduct nuclear research for peaceful purposes and according to international
commitments.

India’s unwavering support to the cause of the Palestinian people is another
example of India’s neutral stand, he said. India believes that the invasion
of Iraq by the US was a mistake.

India has become a global leader in many areas. In this context, it deserves
a permanent place in the UN Security Council, the visiting minister said.
A memorandum, highlighting issues such as attestation of documents,
introduction of smart cards, setting up of Pravasi Centre, increasing the
staff strength in the embassy, separate Pravasi Day for the Gulf region,
reservation for NRI students in educational institutions and land for the
Indian Cultural Centre was presented to the minister.

Replying to it, Ahmed assured the gathering that all possible efforts would be
made to meet the genuine demands.

Indian Ambassador Dr George Joseph, ICC president KC Varghese, KMCC president
S A M Basheer and Norka Roots director C K Menon also spoke. Indian ambassador
to Bahrain Rama Krishna Shetty also attended.

P A M.Sherif presented a memento to the minister.

ICC general secretary Saleem Ponnambath welcomed the gathering and vice-
president Tarun Basu proposed a vote of thanks. – AV

Dear Mr. Floriano Lobo, Esq.

I fully concur with Dr. Jose Colaco. Infact when this posting arrived, I was
penning a few lines in response, but now that was exactly what Dr. Jose Colaco
has already stated and in my mind.

We do not wish some elements to paint Mr. Rene Barreto, Esq. in bad light just
for supporting a just cause or organizing a meet. Of course what is important
is that all factors are to be considered, and a secular approach is to be
made. Dividing the community on party/religion/creed factor is to be deplored.

Also there must be a stop to any further GROUPINGS/FORUM being formed as what
is already in place should be continued or re-constitute the same for the
betterment of all NRI Goans!

If time permits, please dwell on what is exactly happening with the NRI

[Goanet] Catholic Priest found murdered in Goa

2006-03-18 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
-- Forwarded message --
From: Anthony Vaz anthonygoemkar at yahoo.co.in
Date: Mar 18, 2006 2:22 PM

People of Macasana, a village in South Goa, who went to the church for the
daily morning mass on Saturday were in for a shock. As the congregation was
waiting for the parish priest to enter the church for the 6.30 am mass, they
found that neither the priest nor the sacristan were down from their
residence.

A panicky crowd gather outside the residence of the priest, Fr. Eusebio Ferrao
and some ventured to the first floor parapet of the priest residence. On
breaking a window pane they saw the priest lying on the floor. The sacristan
cum cook of the priest was locked in an adjacent room.

As per the information available, it seems that two youth from UP who were
apparently known to the priest had visited the priest late on Friday night.
They had come by the last bus at around 9.00 p.m. and the priest was
apparently aware that they will be visiting him. They had dinner together and
had gone to sleep. Some time during the middle of night they went into the
priest's cabin and smothered him with a pillow and vanished from the premises
after locking the priest's residence door from outside.

Fr. Ferrao was a well known Konkanni writer and used to write regularly on
Gulab Magazine and Vaurreadeancho Ixtt Weekly. In the latest issue of
Vaurreadeancho Ixtt he had written an article on the Sanvordem Communal riots.

Just a few days after the desecration of a cross at Comba in Margao this is
another event which has shocked the Catholic community in Goa.

Police Investigations are going on.

ADEUS KORCHEA VELLAR

You are gone Dad, but not away from our memories. We still remember you as Our
Steel Strong Dad, because that’s what you always called yourself. Yes, you
were strong in your faith, in your walk with Christ, in whatever you did and
also in yourself.

‘Allen Costa’ as you were popularly known to the people of Goa, you never let
them down and always gave them your best. During your days at ex-Emissora de
Goa (now All India Radio), you regaled and enthralled your listeners with your
rich toned voice.

Your popularity with the listeners grew even more on the Konkani request show
Manajogtim Geetam. Programs like Kandllam Onvllam, Moujecho Khell, and
Goenchea Mollbar on FM became synonymous with the name ‘Allen Costa’. Your
melodious songs of yesteryears, ‘Mandovichea Deger’, Vengoi Mujea
Buzak’, ‘Kallangutchea Praer’ and especially ‘Adeus Korchea Vellar’ are still
on everyone’s lips even today. Yes Dad, this song ‘Adeus Korchea Vellar’
sounds good only when you sing it. Even when you would hum this tune while in
the hospital, you never faltered and hummed this tune to perfect.

With pride we say we loved it when people called you Jim Reeves of Goa. Your
good sense of humour took you a long way as compere at weddings and other
social functions and even through your brief illness at the hospital. You had
the knack of stealing everyone’s hearts.

You went away too soon Dad. We never knew any sickness as partial Dementia. We
were confident Senility was catching on, and we took your forgetfulness in our
stride. But destiny had a different script for you. You hit the bed and never
got out of it. All the doctors and nurses tried their best to get you back on
your feet, prayers and dedications flowed from churches, family members,
friends, fans, but in vain! You were destined to be with Jesus and that’s
where you are now rejoicing, without any pain or sorrow. We saw you struggle
to talk, but only silent tears trickling down your eyes spoke what we couldn’t
understand. There was no exchange of farewell, just a silent retreat. Now
while you are no more your voice continues to stay alive with us. We miss you
Dad ! So also the people of Goa !

KGTS does it yet again with OSTAD TIATRIST

Versatile Jose Rod honoured

The unique concept of felicitating the yesteryears stars of Konkani stage for
their contribution to the Tiatrist Fraternity is what Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi
Sonvstha (KGTS) stands for. With the last two mega musical super hit shows in
Kuwait, they did it again with the grand success of OSTAD TIATRIST - a
tribute to Konkani Tiatr and Tiatrist, which was a sellout. Staged at the
Hawalli A/C auditorium on 24th February 2006, this much awaited annual event
saw the cream of the Konkani lovers among the audience. At the commencement,
one minute silence was observed in respect of the late Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al
Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah. Paying their respect to this great leader of Kuwait,
the audience with the organizers observed a minute silence. KGTS started the
show by playing Kuwait's National Anthem. This was followed by a chit-chat
with a flow of yesteryears Tiatrists' songs as well as depiction. Legendary
star Late Anthony Mendes shot to fame with his solo song Taxi Driver decades
ago, and this time his sons, the Mendes Brothers, Felix-Xavier-Derrick
performed it as a Trio. Remembering their father's contribution, Felix Mendes
appreciated and thanked the KGTS members for inviting them to perform for
their grand musical show. Felix also extended their well wishes and pledged
support to new upcoming stars. Apart from the the Kuwait-based stars who
performed, a galaxy of artistes from Bombay and Goa were flown specially for
the 3rd Grand Musical show in Kuwait. Joe Rose, Comedian Augustino Temudo and
Comedian Domnic Coelho, S.Lemos, Francis de Tuem and Trio Kings of Goa:
Joaquim-Junior Rod-Anthony dazzled the audience in their spell binding musical
journey of the golden era of Tiatr. The comedy skits interspeared between the
songs. Songs from Francis de Tuem on Goa's mining industry was well applauded
by the audience so was the Trio Kings songs on the political scenario in Goa.
Trio kings are hardcore composers with political and social topics. They are
very famous for their bold lyrics and widely expose the flaws of the Goa
government through their songs. Their trios Dr. Verenkar, M.Boyer
and Parrikar were well applauded. Comedian Domnic and Comedian Agostinho's
performance kept the audience laughing till the very end.

The appearances of the majority of the KGTS members including Manuel de Santa
Cruz, Tony Carr, Clara, Domingos Araujo, Zorro, among others, in different
song sequences and scenarios was well choreographed with appropriate light
effects and music by a team of youngsters led by well-known musicians Maestro
Succorro de Melo.

The main attraction of the show was the leaflets (popularly known as
Handbills) of yesteryears Tiatrs that were on display on the left side of the
stage, and the right side of the stage was occupied by the musicians. This
unique collection dating back to 1950's was provided by Brazinho Soares of
Santa Cruz (Goa) to KGTS. The stage set-up suited for the musical show, the
decor as well as light effects added charm. The opening song by KGTS President
Francis de Verna, KGTS members Junifer Rodrigues, Donald Colaco and Cajetan de
Sanvordem highlighted the significance of the title of the musical Ostad
Tiatrist.

Heartthrob of Konkani stage Jose Rod in his song AMIG paid rich tributes
to Bab Peter. Jose Rod was felicitated at the hands of Xavier Mendes for his
tremendous contribution. With tears of joy, a surprised Jose Rod thanked all
his fellow KGTS colleagues and fellow Tiatr lovers for honour bestowed. The
compere announced that this was a well guarded secret by the KGTS until the
event unfolded. Mario de Majorda was at his best with his hilarious laughing
pills along with Comedian Nelson. Palkacho Divo a tribute song to one of the
senior artistes - Anthony (of Trio Kings fame) by the newly formed trio Katty
de Navelim-Simon Gonsalves-Joseph Rodrigues was well composed sung. At this
junction, Anthony was escorted on the stage and he congratulated the composer
and singers. Such was his liking of the song that Anthony will have it added
in his Konkani VCD which will be shortly released in fond rememberance of his
Trio singers – Late Conception and Late Nelson.

KGTS which was formed in 2003 and has organized Musical Show in Kuwait for the
last 3 years including this year, the proceeds collected is given to Goan
Dramatists on Konkani Stage who are often old and forgotten. This is one
generous way of telling the senior and retired Dramatists that KGTS together
with Konkani Tiatr lovers in Kuwait cares for them and that their contribution
is not forgotten by the new generation. Gracy Morais Cheddum, Joe
Rose Bubli Bubli, Goenchim Antique Ghoram and Jaisi Jaisi, Anthony
Carr Goa, Zorro Kazar Zatam, Donald Colaco Upkar, S.Lemos Rakhno
Bhurgo and Kiddo ani Mathi, Junior Rod Kid Boxer, Francis de Tuem Young

[Goanet] Goans in Gulf demands Paul Moraes resignation and disbanding of ABKP

2006-02-12 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Konkani meet wants one scipt, Devnagri
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji Feb 10: The president of the silver jubilee literary conference of
Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Parishad, Paul Moraes, addressing the inaugural
session of the three-day event, today said that one script namely Devnagri
should be supported, especially among the new generation if Konkani language
is to be developed in the global scenario.

The Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane, who was the chief guest on the
occasion said that his government is ready to support holding of World Konkani
Conference in Goa.

“The state has a unique culture of creative geniuses and Konkani language has
been instrumental in maintaining this culture,” he observed.
Earlier, the Governor, Mr S C Jamir inaugurated the literary conference, at
the open auditorium of Kala Academy, in the presence of a number of former
presidents of the Parishad.

Mr Jamir, describing Konkani language as the entity which gave Goa its
distinct identity, said that there should be reciprocal understanding between
people by way of languages.

The local languages must develop linkages with the world community, at large,
the Governor said, pointing out that languages are vehicles of communication
and find expression of feelings. Learning languages helps in fostering
emotional integration between people, he noted.

Moraes, delivering his presidential address said that literature in Konkani
has been generated through various scripts and the process would continue,
which is a fact. “However,” he said, “many scripts are unable to standardise
the language and hence our predecessors as well as leaders who shouldered the
Konkani movement chose Devnagari script as the standard script.”

Speaking further, Moraes said that everyone following other scripts in Konkani
could slowly shift to Devnagri, over a period of time. The future generation
should very well be conversant with the Devnagri script, he opined.

Moraes also stressed on the need to make Konkani education compulsory in Goan
schools and impress upon the governments in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala
to introduce Konkani in their schools. “There is a need to launch another
movement for achieving this goal,” he pointed out.

Moraes said that Goan bodies like Goa University, Goa Konkani Akademi and Kala
Academy must involve Konkani institutions from outside the state in their
projects like Konkani encyclopedias, dictionaries, research and translation
work.

“In our midst there are few narrow-minded people who have build walls of
regionalism, caste, religion, dialect and community, which in turn create
hindrances before the parishad to achieve its goals,” he stated.
“The government should provide the Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Parishad with an
office in the state and an annual grant,” Moraes said.

The former co-operation minister of Karnataka, Mr R V Deshpande, who was the
guest of honour, said that Konkani is a secular language and Konkani people
are secular in nature. He further said that a World Konkani Centre should be
constructed, at Mangalore.

The outgoing president of the parishad, Basti Vaman Shenoy also spoke on the
occasion.

The president of the reception committee of the conference, Mr Shantaram Naik,
in his welcome address said that Konkani is a great binder and unites people,
while the president of the national organising committee, Dr Tanaji Halarnkar
urged for promotion of Konkani language by crossing the barriers of religion,
caste, region and script.

A number of former presidents of the parishad namely Ravindra Kelekar,
Purushottam Mallya, Uday Bhembre, Chandrakant Keni and Pundalik Naik, among
others were felicitated on the occasion.

A number of new books in Konkani of various scripts were also released during
the inaugural session.

2006-02-12 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Excellent review, indeed, Mr. Silviano Barbosa.
Your penultimate para (quoted herebelow) says it all.

The CD has been a total sell out here in Kuwait, the
Gulf and Goa. And that too without much ado over the
release.

The good thing is that everyone who purchased Sanny de
Quepem's CD has received the original presentation
including the immaculately designed cover.

Nevertheless it is very interesting to note that some
Konkani promoting self-confessed guys who would churn
out lengthy essays in self praises and gloriying their
own cronnies are too stunned for words to get a
line in praise for Sanny de Quepem!

Well done, Keep up the good work, Sanny.

After Silviano Barbosa's Classic Goa, this CD is one
to be cherished, and sure it a collector's item.

Review by Silviano Barbosa
February 11, 2006, Toronto, Canada

I played this CD again and again and I was overwhelmed
listening to it.
Today, we have literally thousands of CDs lining the
video stores in Goa. But most of them lack the class
and taste that a serious connoisseur of Konkani music
will want in his/her audio collection. I am happy to
say I consider Sanny de Quepems first CD Saibinnicho
Tisro Segred as a prime candidate to be in the top
list of my best of best collection of Konkani albums.

The last song, a romantic manddo with beautiful words,
Flight Kuwait to Goa by soft voiced Melita Vaz with
a backing by Sanny is a clear favourite
(I played this again and again) and brings a sweet
conclusion to this hit album.

I love this album!

[Goanet] Mopa Airport: Full Transparency Essential

2006-02-07 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
 of decision making.

The basic concerns of the people are economic. How is
the government going to ensure that the livelihood of
people directly and indirectly dependent upon the
Dabolim airport is protected and at the same time
guaranteed economic and employment opportunities are
created in Pernem taluka in particular without paying
high social costs?

The consultants must have left this sensitive question
to the government because they would not like to join
the political debate. Under WTO commitments powerful
international role players are likely to monopolise
the airport related services anywhere in India, with
or without Indian equity participation. But really
what sort of people benefit from any new international
airport at various stages -- from construction to
commissioning?
What’s the experience of Cochin international airport
in Kerala? Are there any positive lessons to be learnt
from this novel venture? How the proposed Mopa
international airport is going to be different in
equity structure, design, operations and management
than the Cochin international airport?

Then there is the question of technological
revolution. It would be naive to suppose that
passengers landing at airports in future would be
using only the road transport to commute to their
local destinations. Cheap light air taxis/ helicopter
services would be available and these would be
aggressively introduced by the powerful multinational
operators. Would the state government then oppose such
operations?
Local people would be worried about their entitlement,
their benefit from a new airport. If they discover
later that they’ve been cheated then it would lead to
massive social unrest. Politicians seldom disclose all
their cards. Their real interests are often hidden.
Goa may be divided over Mopa but people can be united
over the demand of full transparency.

First let the legislative assembly get all the
techno-economic details. Then let the government
submit the copies of the ICAO report to all the
village panchayats in Pernem taluka and send
representatives to the gram sabhas to explain ICAO
findings. Public participation in planning
mega-projects is more important than consultants’
expensive reports. We need full transparency over each
stage of proposed Mopa international airport.

[Goanet] Fr Chico birth anniversary celebration

2006-01-29 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
, the terms of the house-
arrest were relaxed to where he was able to walk within the confines of his
village. Subsequently, he was allowed to once again travel freely within the
territory of Goa.

It is unclear if the judicial curfew was ever lifted, or if Fr. Chico ever set
foot outside Goa. An avid traveler in his prior days, he appeared to
graciously resign himself to a life of judicial exile. As a priest, his
allegiance to the Divine was of an uncommon grain and stature. As a man, he
was genuinely attracted to all people as human beings. Despite been
consecrated a Monsignor, he continued to don the cassock of a habitual priest.
It was his way of affirming his disinclination for any position in the
patriarchal hierarchy of the Church. In general, he had an unbiased enthusiasm
for life and an untiring work ethic. As for his smiles, they were a trademark
of his effulgent demeanor. They were vibrant with sincerity, and ungrudgingly
impartial.

Bloom where you have been planted!, urged the late music maestro, Fr.
Lourdino Barreto, to his students. A stalwart in his own controversial right,
he was also a close friend and admirer of Fr. Chico. And bloom they did,
without being uprooted from their deep convictions. On October 30, 1990, Fr.
Chico was laid to rest in the soil he was planted in seven decades before. The
following year, he was posthumously conferred the Vincent Xavier Verodiano
Award. It was to be the only civic recognition ascribed to his name.

If life is an intended conflict between the material and the spiritual, Fr.
Chico proffered no treatise or comment. At least, he left no known written
account of his crusade, and his grave mentions nothing beyond his name and the
statistics of his life-span. Yet through it all, he held his head in a
dignified rather than arrogant manner, exhibiting no scars of bitterness or
intonations of having privately argued with God. Had his act of defiance
occurred a decade later, he would in all likelihood have been hailed
a ‘conscientious objector', and spared from being hauled away and treated as a
traitor. Instead, he became a prisoner of his conscience, and remained one to
the end of his tenancy.

In summary, there's no mathematical distinction between what's justly right
and what's unjustly right. It's all simply a matter of subjective rationale,
reinforced by prevailing laws. Hopefully someday, time will reorient itself
and manifest the extent to which Fr. Chico's fight for human rights in a
remote part of the world, in the mid-sixties, might have influenced other
human rights activists elsewhere. Like a seed that was sowed and drifted into
oblivion, and found its prodigious sprout some place else . . . !

Jaya Bachchan inaugurates cultural extravaganza Mandovi Milan in Goa

Panaji | January 07, 2006

Renowed Hindi film actress and president of Yuvak Biradari Jaya Bachchan today
inaugurated a cultural extravaganza called 'Mandovi Milan' on the banks of
River Mandovi here.

The three-day event is jointly organised by Goa government's Department of Art
and Culture and Yuvak Biradari (Bharat), Mumbai.

Its objective is 'Bharat Banav-Vasundhara Bachhao' (Make India, Save the
Earth).

Ms Bachchan inaugurated the event by lighting a traditional lamp at Kala
Academy in the presence of State Minister for Arts and Culture Digamber Kamat,
who is also the chairman of organising committee, and Kranti Shah, the chief
convenor of the event.

Speaking on the occassion, she said this type of event was needed in the
country to carry forward the message through art and culture.

Wherever Yuvak Biradari organised such event, there was tremendous support for
such a programme, she added.

Ms Bachchan said students being the future of the country, her organisation
will support and help them.

After the inaugural function, a colourful extravaganza was presented by 200
artistes from seven states.

Another interesting component of Mandovi Milan is the Hindi Hasya Kavi
Sammelan, which will be held tomorrow at Kala Academy, Panaji, Ponda and
Margao.

On the concluding day, a procession will start from Church Square and end at
Miramar, which will be presided over by Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane.

Ram Nivas Mirdha, Chairman of Sangeet Natak Academy, Delhi will be the chief
guest, while Nafisa Ali Sodhi, chairperson of Children's Film Society of India
will be the guest of honour.

On the same day, students trained in five different Indian languages will pour
the water collected from seven rivers in the country into the Mandovi river,
which further meets the Arabian Sea as a part of the Mandovi Milan programme.

SANTA ENLIVENS CRCC X'MAS FIESTA

Kuwait City: Dashing through the crowd on a 'Starry Affair' night, Santa Claus
made his way to the Fakhruddin Palace for the 13th Annual X'mas Fiesta.

Organized by the Cultural Recreational Club of Chinchinim (CRCC) on Dec 15,
Santa Claus, his four reindeer and his bag of goodies were not the only thing
that got the crowd euphoric but the CRCC Ballroom Dance competition, the
Stepping Stones, the Soul Shakers and amazing lighting by the Lighting Wizards
got them mesmerized.

Try tapping your feet to the steps of the Foxtrot, Waltz and Cha-Cha-Cha seems
too difficult? Well it was not so difficult for Ronny Fiona, Nathan Joyce
and Derek Julia who, winners of the competition who danced their way into
the night to gab some of those exciting gift packages.

No dancing skills yet a little romance, energy and impression in your dancing
takes you a long way at the CRCC dance competitions. Victor Glenda, Tony
Mavis and Liston Conchita were selected as the most romantic, energetic and
impressive couples respectively.

Not too young to be portrayed and not too old to be forgotten, Bob Marley,
Goan nightingale Lorna, and Pope John Paul II were just some of the
personalities 'brought alive' by children aged 1-5 and 6-12 a the Fancy Dress
Competition themed Personality Come Alive.

Lloyd D'souza and his allure did nothing but haul crowds into the groove of
the night with his drollness teamed with Ramona Soares.

CRCC focuses on Education for the needy in Goa, felicitating in addition every
year an Academic Award to children of the CRCC members. This year CRCC
felicitated Frederico DeMello and Dylan A.D'Souza for completing grade X and
XII respectively.

Our thanks go out to Edwin Fortes and his team for the starry décor at the
hall. In addition, CRCC pay special thanks to www.goa-world.com for their
contribution towards the event. Members of the CRCC thanks everyone for
participating and getting the event to a higher level, thanks to our CRCC
Ballroom Dance competition judges: Candy, Duarte and Aggie (Members of
Kuwait's popular music band - Stepping Stones) and Fancy Dress Personality
Come Alive judges - Melanie, Sarina and Noel.

 Americans, 2005 proved that it's
not smart to mess with crazy mama.

He's a real nowhere man.
This was the year when a majority of Americans
realized that they could not trust George Bush.
Unfortunately, he was elected to a four-year term and
will be with us for three more years - unless
impeached. While there were encouraging signs at the
end of the year, Democrats have yet to mount an
effective opposition. As a result, America is leaving
2005 a deeply divided nation without a clear sense of
direction. Adrift on a sea riled by an increasingly

OPERATION-ALEMAO
Congressmen behind sting operation: Alemao
PANAJI, DEC 23, 2005 (PTI)
Outlookindia.com

Congress MP from South Goa, Churchill Alemao, who was caught on camera in a
sting operation into MPLAD project allocation scheme, today alleged his
partymen in the state, who feared he may get inducted into the Union cabinet,
were behind the operation.

My own partymen from Goa are involved in this operation but I have nothing to
worry as I am getting full support from the Central leadership, Alemao, the
former Chief Minister of the state, told reporters in south Goa.
Alemao said the fears that he could be inducted as a Minister in the Union
cabinet during next cabinet expansion, prompted his partymen in Goa to plan
the operation.

Wait and watch, I will prove as to who all are involved in this operation to
defame me, said Alemao, addng he has full faith in the Central leadership.
I am accountable to the Central leadership only and they know that I am
innocent, Alemao said.

Refusing to name any state party leader, Alemao said he would not lodge a
complaint with the Central leadership but wait for the right time to act
against the local leaders.

He said he has a tape to prove that the brains behind operation were agents
working on behalf of the news channel to make money.

Alemao also alleged two persons, who had come to his house during the
operation, tried to blackmail him asking for Rs 2 lakh.

When they realised that they cannot bribe me, they tried to blackmail me for
Rs 2 lakh through two of my friends stating that they have the video
recordings of me asking for money, Alemao added.

[Goanet] New Feature Film Xapai to be directed by Sai Paranjpye (in Konkani/English/Hindi)

2005-12-18 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Grandpa tale

Screen On Off

The First Indian International Women's Film Festival, taking place at 89
Cinemas and Priya cinema, is seeing a steady stream of film-makers and
actresses breezing through town. After the inauguration by Sonali Kulkarni on
December 12, film-maker Sai Paranjpye is here to attend a retrospective on her.

The package includes Sparsh, Disha, Papiha, Saaz and Bhago Bhoot. The former
chairman of Children's Film Society of India is now planning to start her next
feature, Xapai (meaning grandfather in colloquial Konkani), sometime in March.
Sai will write and direct the English-Hindi-Konkani film set in Goa.

It's about a Goan Christian family with a very strong Portuguese hangover.
There's this old man living in a beautiful crumbling building, with his maid,
cook and driver. He is approaching 90 and so his children gather around him.
There's a lot of family intrigue… It's a black comedy and Habib Tanvir will
play the lead, says Sai, also planning to release Chakachak — a children's
film on environment issues made in 2004 — in Calcutta, in the DVD
format. Chakachak is certainly not my best film, but it got me the best press
ever, says she.

Disha is my favourite film and it's very sad that the prints are not being
preserved properly. I don't even know if a proper print of Saaz or Sparsh
exists or not, rues the film-maker who started out as a radio announcer
before switching to theatre and cinema.

Other Indian women film-makers featured in the ongoing festival are Aparna
Sen, Mira Nair, Deepa Mehta, Gurinder Chadha, Pamela Rooks and Meghna Gulzar.
The world cinema section showcases works from Hungary, France, Iran, USA,
Poland, Italy, Russia and Norway, with Germany in the international focus. The
seven-day festival has been organised by Kolkata Film and Media Studies.

[Goanet] Indian engineers to be certified for global market

2005-12-17 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Indian engineers to be certified for global market

In a move that would provide a boost to employment of country's engineers
worldwide, India is all set to become a member of the International Engineers
Mobility Forum that sets benchmarks for engineers in over 11 countries.

The forum, which gave a provisional membership to India in 2003, is expected
to make it a permanent member during its meet in 2007.

Announcing this on Wednesday, President of the Institute of Engineers (India)
VJ Vasoya said that the move was imperative in the post-WTO environment since
Indian engineers were in huge demand across the globe.

The membership would essentially provide professional parity to Indian
engineers vis-a-vis their peers in most developed countries. The certification
would soon become mandatory for any engineer wanting to pursue work in the
member countries, he said.

Countries like USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and New Zealand were
currently members of the global forum and India, Singapore and Bangladesh its
provisional members.

After India gets a permanent membership, engineers with seven years of field
experience and certified continuous professional development can take a test
conducted by a national Board of Certification for Engineers to qualify for
the certification.

Approximately five lakh engineers pass out from Indian colleges every year
and over a lakh go out in pursuit of work outside the country. This
certification would arm them with the requisite professional competence
desired in the global market, president elect of the institution Dr SC Naik
said.

[Goanet] Lionel Richie arrives for Mallya's birthday bash

Lionel Richie arrives for Mallya's birthday bash

Panaji: Internationally acclaimed singer Lionel Richie flew in to Goa on the
private jet of United Breweries group chairman Vijay Mallya Friday night.

Immediately after his arrival at Dabolim airport, the singer was driven to a
hotel in the northern coastal belt of Goa.

Richie is in Goa to attend Mallya's 50th birthday party to be held at a
picturesque beach location here Sunday.

Although United Breweries officials coordinating the event refrained from
saying whether Richie would perform at the party, indications are that the
Grammy and Oscar-winning artiste will.

Richie is accompanied by a team of musicians and technicians.

The high profile event, to be attended by Bollywood stars, business tycoons
and politicians, will be held under tight security.

A senior police official said such an event automatically warranted security
arrangements of the highest order, particularly in view of an alert on a
possible Bali-type terrorist attack.

The venue for the party - Mallya's Kingfisher Villa - is located on Candolim
beach and leads into the Arabian Sea. The marine cell of Goa Police will
patrol nearby waters, the official said.

Mumbai architect Charles Correa designs MIT neuroscience centre

IANS
Monday, December 05, 2005

http://dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1000767

NEW YORK: Mumbai-based architect Charles Correa has designed what is the
world's largest complex dedicated to neuroscience research at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Boston, USA.
The new facility, inaugurated last weekend, has state-of-the-art facilities
and is built around a soaring five-storey atrium, include wet and dry labs for
molecular, cognitive and systems neuroscience, the imaging center with fMRIs,
classrooms, offices, seminar rooms and a large auditorium.

The new 4.11 lakh square-foot complex is the latest building to open as part
of MIT's extensive new building programme. It will house three primary
occupants: the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, the McGovern
Institute for Brain Research and the Picower Institute for Learning and
Memory, as well as the Athinoula A Martinos Imaging Center. The complex is
designed to bring scientists from disparate backgrounds together, and to
encourage chance encounters and conversations that may lead to new ideas.

Proximity and buildings matter a great deal in science said Mriganka Sur,
the Indian American head of the Department of Brain and Cognitive
Sciences. We expect it will expand the imagination of our students and
researchers by allowing them easy access to other ways and levels and scales
of thinking. We believe Charles Correa's design, with its soaring spaces and
light, will allow imaginations to soar as well.
Every place has its own soil, its own culture, said Correa at the
inauguration. And the culture of MIT is that of science; that is to say, the
gravitas of science. This is the crucial territory that I knew this project
must reclaim.

Correa is a major figure in contemporary architecture. He studied architecture
at the University of Michigan and at MIT. In private practice in Mumbai since
1958, his work covers a wide range, from the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at the
Sabarmati Ashram, to the Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, and the state assembly
for Madhya Pradesh.

Stop airport study tour, Churchill tells Rane

BY HERALD REPORTER www.oheraldo.in

MARGAO, DEC 3, 2005 — Calling upon Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane to stop the
tour of the Mopa Steering Committee members to study airports abroad, MP
Churchill Alemao on Saturday warned Congress leaders that the party would
cease to exist on the political map of Goa if Dabolim is closed down as an
international airport.

Addressing a press conference held to announce the names of office-bearers of
the Save Dabolim Airport committee, Alemao demanded that the chief minister
should immediately cancel the tour of the three MLAs and bureaucrats or face
the consequences. These people cannot go on a pleasure jaunt to study
airports when people are opposed to any new airport in Goa. Or, else the
government should brace up to face the consequences, he warned.

Alemao also asked Rane to clarify his stand whether he supports the need to
retain Dabolim as Goa's lone international airport.

Referring to GPCC President Ravi Naik's statement about maintaining party
discipline, Alemao said let Ravi join the anti-Mopa movement if he talks
about discipline. Ravi should know that the Congress would cease to exist in
Goa if Dabolim fails to exist.

Launching a tirade on Pernem MLA, Jitendra Deshprabu, Alemao accused
Deshprabhu of trying to kill two birds with one bullet. With Mopa, he wants
to sell his land and displace the tenants as well, he charged.

Referring to Deshprabhu's statement that Goa opted for Mopa to scuttle the
airport from coming up at Sindhudurg, Alemao said let Maharashtra set up an
airport at Ratnagiri. Why should we think of 50 years like Sardinha when Goa
will never be merged with Maharashtra even in the next 500 years.

Asking the government to scrap the Mopa project by dropping the land
acquisition proceedings immediately, Alemao threatened to launch an
unprecedented agitation unheard in the history of Goa to save Dabolim.

Committee spokesman Radharao Gracias said the people of Goa do not accept the
guarantee from Luizinho and other MLAs that Dabolim would remain. There's no
guarantee that many of these leaders would get re-elected. The only guarantee
that people want is that Dabolim would remain as Goa's lone international
airport, he asserted.

Gracias wondered why Goa should oppose an airport at Sindhudurg, saying that
Pernem and even Goa would be served better by that airport.

Gracias said it's time for Churchill to realise that his own Congress party is
not with him on the issue and think of some long-term strategy. Vijay
Sardessai said even BJP leader Manohar Parrikar is trying to fool the public
on the issue.

The Save Dabolim committee comprises of Churchill Alemao (Convenor), MLA
Matanhy Saldanha (vice-convenor), Radhrao Gracias as spokesman, Farrel Gracias
as coordinator. The members are Vijay Sardessai, Nelly Rodrigues, John Philip
Pereira, Ulhas Buyao, Albert Leitao, Mike Mehta, Adv V S Gaitonde, Adv Ramnath
Kharangate, GOTTA President Kennedy Goes, Varca Sarpanch Jose Afonso, Dr
Ernesto Rodrigues and Akbar Mulla.

Journalists stage walkout at IFFI press meet

Panaji, Nov. 24 (PTI): Hours before the curtain rises
on the 36th International Film Festival of India, a
press conference called to discuss media arrangements
for the inaugural ceremony ended on a sore note with
several television and photojournalists staging a
walkout.

Tempers ran high after organisers announced that
television crew would not be allowed to carry cameras
inside the high security INOX multiplex where the
inaugural ceremony is scheduled to be held later
today.
Refusing to heed Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF)
Director Afzal Amanullah's pleas to maintain order,
irate scribes decided to boycott the press conference
and staged a walkout.

According to an IB Ministry official, only the
official television sponsor would be showing the live
telecast of the ceremony whereas other channels would
have access to live and deferred live footage from
outside the venue.
However, broadcast journalists were not pleased with
the organisers' decision.
We have been covering the film festival for years.
Even when it was previously held in Delhi, we were
allowed to carry the cameras inside, a miffed TV
journalist said.
They expect us to go and keep our equipment somewhere
and not even take responsibility for it. We are not
pirates. This is really unfair, he added.

The media walkout at the press meet is not expected to
affect the inaugural ceremony as the journalists have
said they would be not be boycotting the function.
The inaugural ceremony today would be preceded by a
carnival, which would include floats, cultural
pageantry and other festivities.
Yesteryears actor Dev Anand, will be the Chief Guest
whereas South Indian cinestar Chiranjeevi, will be the
Guest of Honour at the function.
Union Minister of Culture and Urban Development Jaipal
Reddy, would be present at the opening ceremony with
film actresses Bipasha Basu and Tara, sharing the
honour of being the 'Thali Girl' for the function.
The ten-day film festival would kick off with the
screening of Brazilian film 'Olga'.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT TO BE DEDICATED TO EASTERN MISSIONS

VATICAN CITY, NOV 24, 2005 (VIS) - The Vatican's
traditional Christmas concert will be held in the Paul
VI Hall at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, December 3. This
year it will be dedicated to missions in the east.

According to a communique made public today, the
concert aims to raise public awareness concerning the
question of the Church's missionary vocation and to
gather funds to support missions in east Asia. One
reason for this choice of theme, the communique says,
is because 2006 has been proclaimed as the 'Xavierian
Year' (in honor of the patron of missions St. Francis
Xavier, on the fifth centenary of his birth), of which
the concert will officially mark the opening.

The concert will include various pieces from a new
musical on the life of the saint: Xavier - dreaming
of China. It was to that country that the Jesuit
saint was travelling on his last missionary journey;
however, he fell ill on the island of Sancian, 100
kilometers off the Chinese coast, and died there on
December 3, 1552.

Artists from all over the world will participate in
the concert to symbolize the encounter between a
diversity of countries, cultures, religions, life
experiences, ideals, and musical genres and styles,
the communique concludes, and in order to highlight
once again the universality of the Church.

Soccer referees to use field radios

The world will witness for the first time, use of
radio micro phones by a referee in a competitive
football match, thanks to the Indian Football
Association.

Speaking to the media about the 111th IFA Shield 2005,
Subrata Dutta, secretary of IFA, said this would be
the first time, such an experiment would be done.
With the help of the radio microphone, the referee's
conversation would be available to the TV viewers, but
at the discretion of the programme director, he
explained.
Speaking to Business Standard, Dutta explained that
corporates were now backing football in India.
The matches that we have been conducting has seen
increasing participation from corporate in terms of
sponsorship. The 111th IFA Shield has also recorded
corporate sponsorship to the tune of Rs 1 crore, apart
from Rs 1.5 crore from ESPN-Star Sports, the official
channel partner of the tournament, Dutta added.

The sponsors list included names like Allahabad Bank,
Chirag, Playwin, Sangbad Pratidin, SWC, HHI, Hindustan
Times and Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, he added.

India is expected to witness a surge in football fever
as the World Cup kicks off in Germany next year and
domestic football fans join the craze.

Indian football is set become market savvy and
glamourised with Zee Sports acquiring the ten-year
rights to telecast matches from the All India Football
Federation (AIFF).

The ball has already started rolling on the funds
awashed greens with the Federation Cup organised by
the AIFF at the Nehru Stadium, Margao, Goa from
October 19.
The cup this time would provide for air travel for all
the players with the extra money provided by Zee
Sports and would also have state of the art medical
facilities with the precedence of the unfortunate
incident of the death of Dempo's Brazilian striker
Christiano Junior, which would henceforth be closely
monitored said Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, president, AIFF.

A logo for the Federation Cup was unveiled to signal
this new journey of resurgence of Indian football with
the prize money of the cup increased to Rs 26 lakh
with Rs 12 lakh for the winner and Rs 7 lakh for the
runner-up.
A third position has also been introduced from this
year with a prize money of Rs 2 lakh and a best
striker endowment in memory of Junior worth Rs 2 lakh.

The fund inflow has also resulted in first round
winners getting Rs 30,000 and those winning the
quarter final fixtures onwards an increased fee of Rs
60,000, Dasmunsi continued.

Zee Sports will leverage its regional channels to
promote the domestic level matches and according to
the contract clause post the AIFF's delivery of a
couple of tournaments every year, the channel has
promised a certain sum of money which would be
utilised in improvement and training of players,
facilities and various football clubs and
associations, said Mody.
The channel plans to telecast about 100 matches a
year.
The marketing activities will include a special
website providing details on matches, players and
statistics, chat rooms, video clips, online games,
wallpaper and ringtones besides mainline advertising.
For the first time domestic matches will get coverage
on daily news programmes like Sports Cafe on Zee
Sports with a pan Indian presence. Next on the
telecast and promotion radar by the channel are
Santosh Trophy, National Football League and Super
Cup.

And Reaven said Nevermore

Recently GW spoke to founding managing editor of The
Times, Kuwait, Reaven D'Souza.

He has over 17 years of journalism experience and ia a
relentless advocate for human rights in Kuwait and has
worked in different capacities in Kuwait Times daily
before leaving and setting up his own fortnightly
newsmagazine, The Times, Kuwait.

Recently, he has donned an active role of a reformist
in developing the local media by empowering
journalists and is secretary-general of Kuwait Asian
Journalists Association (KAJA), an organisation set
up to defend the rights of journalists in the country.

How freely are the opinions and viewpoints discussed
in the local dailies?

I would say that a huge divide between Arabic and
English publications exists in terms of opinions and
viewpoints.
There is a distinct feeling that English publications
rarely if ever influence opinions of those who are
concerned. However, that is not to say issues from
labour and maid exploitation to social issues and
sometimes political opinion are not frequently
expressed in an open and frank way. There is still
much left to be desired. To-date English publications
have refrained from crossing the line, that is by
exercising self censorship publications aim to strike
the right balance between the reader who wants to know
and the government who it does not want to upset.

Do the local dailies offer any substantial fare for
the Asian expatriate palate?

Absolutely not, as none of the local dailies subscribe
to any Asian based news service coverage and Asian
issues are restricted to feeds from Western agencies
and occasional coverage from local Asian journalists.

What is lacking in the Kuwaiti media, and what can be
done to address the issue?

One of the biggest obstacles facing Kuwaiti media is
the lack of training of journalists including
publishers and editors. This has really prevented them
from experimenting and developing ideas that might
help generate advertising revenue as well as increase
circulation.

While there is a reasonable amount of freedom of the
Press there is a disproportionate amount of qualified
and trained staff to take advantage of that. Several
factors are responsible. One factor is sustainability
of local dailies as they are subsidised and enjoy
certain amount of financial protection. At the expense
of investing in professionalism dailies choose to
maintain status quo.

What's the future for newspapers will they always be
around?

They'll be around for a long time. I think, though,
that eventually they'll be quite different. For
instance, media will stand on a platform of
technology. More people will rely on the Internet to
get stocks, sports statistics, national news, etc, so
newspapers will be able to streamline their coverage
in these areas.

If you had one piece of advice to offer to young
journalists, what would it be?

Being properly trained is perhaps the first
pre-requisite. Attending workshops, understanding
ethics, striving to establish international standards
can only help journalists advance and make a
difference to society.

Finally, as a journalist, say what you have to say,
because no one else can, and that's what you have to
contribute. That's your value. And, that's my two
cents!

[Goanet] Chartered flight arrivals in Goa rising

Chartered flight arrivals in Goa rising

Goa tourism industry, backbone of the state’s economy,
is expecting a big jump in chartered flight arrivals
this season. Dabolim airport has been prepared for
more such landings.

The airport will be allowing night operations from
this season including late night and early morning
operations. “As against the earlier policy of allowing
restricted weekend (Friday to Sunday) slots for
chartered flights, the airport will allow early
morning and late night slots round the week,” highly
placed sources in the Airport Authority of India (AAI)
told Business Standard.

The season has already begun with the arrival of Spain
Air flights in the first week of August and the next
one to arrive will be Britannia flight by month end.
Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has
estimated that the number of chartered flights will
cross 800 this season.

“Particularly with flights from Russian increasing,
the charter season this year too will be extended
beyond the first week of May,” said Elvis Gomes, MD,
GTDC.

Apart from traditional European charters, Goa this
year is expecting a lot of flights from the Gulf
countries, Russia and other countries. From 419
chartered flights in 2000-01, it shot up to 690 in
2004-05.

The arrival of chartered tourists has also shown a
significant increase with the number of tourists per
flight going up considerably in the last couple of
years. From 1.16 lakh in 2000-01, the number of
chartered tourist arrival touched 1.58 lakh last
season, according to the official statistics.

The state also witnessed a major growth in overall
arrivals last year with a record 24.50 lakh tourists
coming here. While the domestic tourist arrival went
up to 20.85 lakh (a rise of 20 per cent) in 2004-05
from 17.25 lakh in 2003-04, the foreign tourist
segment witnessed a 15.5 per cent growth during the
corresponding period with the arrivals going up from
3.14 lakh to 3.63 lakh.

Hotels in the premium segment last year reported over
10 per cent average rise in ARR (average room rate),
an indicator of revenue boom in the hospitality
sector.

Apart from the brief setback on account of heavy rains
in Mumbai resulting in a lot of flight cancellations,
the hospitality industry has done extremely well
during the off season and is very optimistic about the
season ahead.

Ralph de Souza, Tourist Committee chairman of the Goa
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, “During the
traditional off-season (monsoon season), hoteliers in
Goa on an average report an occupancy rate of well
over 55 per cent with business coming from corporates,
business conferences and conventions in five-star
resorts.”

It has been estimated that the occupancy rate of
hotels and resorts would be 100 per cent during the
peak tourist season. “It is unbelievable to know that
hotels have been booked till February end. It’s 100
per cent bookings from November onwards,” Gomes
informed.

The tourism industry has welcomed tourism minister
Wilfred de Souza’s plans to focus on hinterland
tourism, eco-tourism, pilgrim tourism and adventure
tourism to attract more ‘paying tourists’.

The project proposes to promote and showcase Goa’s
cultural heritage. The importance of promoting
hinterland and village tourism is to generate yet
another avenue for attracting tourists to this
paradise. Mayuresh Pawar / Business Standard.

HIS LORDSHIP BISHOP FRANCIS MICALLEF, OCD retires
after 24 years of humble service in the Lord's
vineyard.
The Catholics in Kuwait thank God for the gift of
Bishop Francis Micallef and for his 24 years of
service to the Church in Kuwait as Bishop. In the past
recent weeks, the faithful had the opportunity to
express their love and gratitude to His Lordship and
to pray with him and for him as he prepares to depart
Kuwait for good.

A native of Malta, Bishop Francis was ordained a
Priest of the Discalced Carmelite Order on May 9,
1954. He served in various capacities as the
Conventual, Prior (Superior) of the Monastery in
Malta, as Master of Novices and finally as the
Provincial Superior of the Maltese Discalced Carmelite
Province. In 1973, he was elected one of the Four
Definitors General of the Order. From 1979-81, he was
Rector at the Carmelite International College
(TERESIANUM) in Rome. Being a man of tremendous talent
and wisdom, he was given the responsibility to look
after the Carmelite missions world over.

He was ordained as Bishop for Kuwait by Pope John Paul
II on January 6, 1982. He came here shortly thereafter
and was formally installed as Kuwait's third Vicar

FAREWELL MESSAGE OF BISHOP FRANCIS MICALLEF
==

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am leaving Kuwait for good after almost 24 years
of pastoral service as Bishop. I thank God for the
many graces and blessings He showered on me
personally, on the Vicariate Clergy, Religious
Sisters and Priests, on the Catholic faithful and on
the State of Kuwait.

I want to thank in a special way my clergy who have so
generously ministered and continue to minister to the
spiritual and social needs of our Catholic
faithful. During these 24 years of my presence in
Kuwait I have witnessed the development and
progress of Kuwait in all sectors of Kuwait, the
growth of the Ecclesial Community a n d the many
initiatives started and sustained b y the
different language, cultural a n d ritual
congregations of our faithful.

When I was installed as the new Vicar Apostolic
of Kuwait on January 1982, in my interview with the
Press, I have said that Kuwait was to be my second
home. I remained true to what I had promised then.
Yes, I feel that Kuwait had become my second home.
This explains why I will miss very much the people
I had been placed and honoured to serve in the Lord.
But that is part of the life of a Bishop. I am
looking forward to joining one of the Religious
Communities of Carmelite Friars in Malta being myself
a
Carmelite.

Needless to mention, I will carry with me in my
heart and in my mind the cherished fond memories of
the people, and of the events I have served and have
witnessed during my years in Kuwait.

I remain united in prayers especially with all of
you who also endeared me so much and who have been
such an incentive to dedicate myself generously to
work in this portion of the Lord's
vineyard till the eleventh hour. May He be honored
and glorified forever!

I entrust you to the motherly care, love and
protection of our Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of
Arabia. God bless you all.

I miss you!!!

 Your Bishop Emeritus,
 Francis Micallef OCD

Daaiz to celebrate Daaiz Day on 11th Nov

Kuwait, 24 October 2005: Daaiz will celebrate Daaiz
Day on the 11th of November 2005 at Carmel School
Auditorium in Kuwait at 6:00pm, on which the releasing

by Daaiz members.

Daaiz is a group of Konkani's progressive writers,
poets and critiques working voluntarily for the
betterment of Konkani literature in particular.
Literature has no boundary, limits, and languages when
it comes to reaching the reader. Language is just a
media of communicating it to the readers. Daaiz has
been conducting various activities in Kuwait that
supports Konkani language, literature and journalism.

Kavithapaatt is one of the concepts in which various
Konkani poems are being studied and articles by
various poets are being presented. If we really care
for good literature, then we have to be ready for any
criticism. Learning should be the must for every
writer/poet. Only a review on the writing of every
poet/writer will make him a matured poet/writer. The
first monthly literary workshop in the Gulf was
conducted on the 15th November 2002 by Valley Quadras
at his residence, Late Cha.Fra.D'Costa's poetry was
chosen for the debate. After this session the
literature of various other writers/poets such as Late
Luis Mascarenhas, Sijyes Taccode, Melvyn Rodrigues,
Late. George Pinto, J.B.Moraes and others have been
conducted.

Kavithapaatt is mainly focusing on Konkani poetry of
various poets, and various forms of poetry. For every
month, poetry will be chosen for the study and a
complete study will be done on the chosen poem and
will be presented during the Kavithapaatt. Daaiz.com
has published these articles in Kavithapaatt Vol-1
edited by Valley Quadras and published by Ashawadi
Publications. Well-known poets/writers Melvyn
Rodrigues, Henry M Pernal, Hemacharya have written the
forewords.

Daaiz Divo Special Issue 2005 is focusing on special
cause - a charity. The objective of this special issue
is to support a human cause through literature. For
the first time in the history that a special issue is
getting published in which all the Konkani people have
worked together for a cause. Well-known poets/writers
Hemacharya, Melvyn Rodrigues, Andrew L. D'Cunha from
UAE, Clarence Pinto from Muscat, Cyril Sequeira from
Qatar, and Austine Prabhu from America, Gilbert
Sequeira, Valley Quadras and Daaiz writers from Kuwait
have worked for this special issue in the editorial
board. Well known social workers and Konkani
supporters of various associations such as Ida D'Silva
Paladka (Vice-President of KCWA), Nitin Castelino
(Former President of SWAK), Anil Menezes (President of
SWAK), Jossy Pinto, Pascal Pinto (Former President of
KCWA), Vincent Noronha (Social Worker), Clara
Fernandes, Jane Ida Pinto, Sigfred D'Souza, Joel D'Sa
Bahrain and others have worked in the advertisement
committee. This special issue has been intended to
support for Seon Ashram at Belthangady.

As part of this event, 'Goonda' a play written by
Melwin J Vas Kelarai (based on 'Goonda' - the short
story of Valley Quadras) at Carmel School Auditorium
will be played by Melwin J Vas, Antony Menezes, Veena
Menezes, Reena Quadras, Cyril Peris, Nitin Lobo,
Valerian D'Souza, Alexander Fernandes and Pascal
Pinto.

All konkani supporters and well-wishers are welcome to
this special event.

Fashion is a form of “Free Speech” Emotion”.

It not only embraces clothing, but also accessories,

and how and when we wear it, provides others with
shorthand to subtly read the surface of a social
situation and way we feel.

[Goanet] Vatican releases Pope Benedict's first book, 'God's Revolution'

2005-10-12 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Vatican releases Pope Benedict's first book,
'God's Revolution'
 - By Carol Glatz

10/11/2005

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The Vatican joined with other
publishers in an 18-nation release of Pope Benedict
XVI's first book as pope -- a collection of his
speeches from August events in Cologne, Germany.

In his newest book, titled God's Revolution, the
pope outlines the project for his pontificate,
according to a press release by the Italian
publishers, San Paolo.

The Italian edition hit bookstores in Italy Oct. 11,
while the English edition published by Ignatius Press
was expected to be ready for release in the United
States and Canada by the end of October.

The 129-page volume deals with the questions of
Christian faith and the destiny of humanity, of the
state of Israel, Islam, the legacy and the future of
the church and society, said the press release.

But instead of any new pronouncements, the book is a
collection of talks the pope gave during the Aug.
18-21 events in Cologne, including World Youth Day and
meetings with representatives of Germany's Jewish and
Muslim communities. The texts include the pope's
complete remarks, not just his original written
addresses.

The Vatican saw there was a need to release the full
content of the pope's spoken presentations in book
form so that they would be available to the wider
public.

The papal vicar of Rome, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, said
that while the media gave extensive coverage of the
youth gathering this summer, the contents of the
pope's speeches inevitably received rather minor
circulation.

It's impossible for the mass media to cover
everything, he said at a press conference Oct. 11. He
added there is little room for media outlets to delve
into the content of the pope's speeches.

Father Claudio Rossini, head of the Vatican's
publishing house, Libreria Editrice, said turning the
12 speeches the pope made in Cologne into a book helps
distribute the texts beyond the usual channels of
the Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, and the
Vatican's television, CTV.

The pope's discourses are rich in teaching and
instruction that need to be read, reread and reread
again patiently, Father Rossini told Catholic News
Service.

Father Rossini said the Vatican wanted to see how the
market responds to this before deciding if it would
publish other key addresses in book form.

Cardinal Ruini, who wrote the book's introduction,
said the collection of speeches represents a guidebook
and source of light for Christian living.

The book's teachings show that the pope is a great
teacher of the faith and at the same time a shepherd
who knows the path that will lead us into intimacy
with God, he said.

[Goanet] On celibacy

2005-10-04 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Fundamentalists will tell you that celibacy has no
basis in the Bible whatsoever, saying that Christians
are called to Be fruitful and multiply (Genesis
1:28). This mandate speaks to humanity in general,
however, and overlooks numerous passages in the Bible
that support the celibate life. In 1 Corinthians, for
example, Paul actually seems to prefer the celibate
life: Are you free from a wife? Do not seek
marriage... Those who marry will have worldly
troubles, and I would spare you that... The unmarried
man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to
please the Lord; but the married man is anxious about
worldly affairs, how to please his wife, and his
interests are divided (7:27-34). This is not to say
that all men should be celibate, however; Paul
explains that celibacy is a calling for some and not
for others by saying, Each has his own special gift
from God, one of one kind and one of another (7:7).

Jesus Himself speaks of celibacy in Matthew 19:11-12:
Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom
it is granted. Some are incapable of marriage because
they were born so; some, because they were made so by
others; some, because they have renounced marriage for
the sake of the kingdom of God. Whoever can accept
this ought to accept it. Again, the emphasis is on
the special nature of celibacy, one for which not all
men are suited, but one that nevertheless gives glory
to the kingdom of God.
Perhaps the best evidence for the scriptural support
of celibacy is that Jesus Himself practiced it!

Celibacy is historical.
Most people assume that the celibate priesthood is a
convention introduced by the Church fairly late in
history. On the contrary, there is evidence that even
the earliest Church fathers, such as St. Augustine,
St. Cyril, and St. Jerome, fully supported the
celibate priesthood. The Spanish Council of Elvira
(between 295 and 302) and the First Council of Aries
(314), a kind of general council of the West, both
enacted legislation forbidding all bishops, priests,
and deacons to have conjugal relations with their
wives on penalty of exclusion from the clergy. Even
the wording of these documents suggests that the
councils were not introducing a new rule but rather
maintaining a previously established tradition. In
385, Pope Siricius issued the first papal decree on
the subject, saying that clerical continence was a
tradition reaching as far back as apostolic times.

Quoted from an article by Deal W. Hudson who is
publisher and editor of CRISIS Magazine, a Catholic
monthly published in Washington, DC. His articles and
comments have been published in The Wall Street
Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Washington

Times-Dispatch, The Village Voice, Roll Call, National
Journal, The Economist, and by the Associated Press.

[Goanet] Roddo Naka For Bahrain Goans

2005-09-26 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
*Roddo Naka For Bahrain Goans*

One of the prime form of entertainment for Goans in Goa and around the globe
is the konkani tiatr. The past years saw many Goan theatre groups touring
the gulf and Bahrain was included in the itinerary. However, after the show
of Pio Fernandes featuring the nightingale of Konkani stage Lorna in
November 2000, there has been a complete silence of the Konkani tiatrists
and tiatr organisers in Bahrain. The reason - not the unusual Goan politics
had led to innumerable hardships for the organisers of this show and
thereafter quietude engulfed the Konkani stage in Bahrain.

Its after a gap of five years the Goans in Bahrain will now have an
opportunity to watch a drama by a full professional troupe flown in from
Goa. La Ferns - the only Goan restaurant in Bahrain in association with The
Folk Theatre has announced a drama on 18 November'2005. Having performed to
houseful audiences in Goa, Mumbai and Pune, the top theatre personality and
comedian of the kKnkani stage Prince Jacob is set to present 'Roddo Naka' at
the Bishop Trinanzi Auditorium, Manama at 6.30 p.m.

The comedy by Prince Jacob and his brother Humbert makes the theatre lovers
flock to his performances. In his play Roddo Naka, the director has
touched upon the social issues mixed with comedy and scintilating songs.
Further details of this show in Bahrain can be had from La Ferns Restaurant.

Meanwhile, Prince Jacob's longest running play Padri (315 shows) that has
been made into a film is scheduled for release in October 2005. The film
under the direction of Rajesh Fernandes is produced by Raymond Quadros. The
Mangalorean maestro Wilfy Rebimbus has scripted the lyrics for the film
featuring Goan and Mangalorean artistes.

[Goanet] Nuvem-Kuwait Parishioners felicitated the well-known musician Norman Cardozo

Nuvem-Kuwait Parishioners felicitated the well-known
musician Norman Cardozo

Exclusive Interview
Nuvem-Kuwait Parishioners (NKP) felicitated the
well-known musician Norman Cardozo from Murda Grande,
Nuvem - Salcete Goa for his outstanding achievements
in music on Monday, 19th September 2005.

Before landing in Kuwait to play in Comedian Philip’s
musical show ‘Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol’, he has played in
London for Lorna. Prince Jacob and other Goan
artistes and mesmerized the audience with his solo
performance.

Lino Gabriel Fernandes, NKP Secretary honoured the
proud son of the soil with a memento and on behalf of
Nuvem Parishioner in Kuwait, Master Manfred Fernandes,
son of Agusto (NKP treasurer) felicitated the musician
with a Gold Pendant.

While the reception was on a prominent writer
…telephonic interview with Norman Cardoz.

Lino B. Dourado: I had a great opportunity to see you
live on stage in Kuwait at Hawally A/C Auditorium for
Comedian Philip’s musical show ‘Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol’
on 16th Sept. 2005. After a long break Tiatr lovers in
Kuwait enjoyed your combination with Kuwait based
musicians. What do you think about this?

Norman Cardoz: Every show I’ve played with has a
different way of performing and in order to be a
sensitive accompanist, I have to orient myself to that
person’s frame of mind and suit my music to their
music. I would like to thank Shahu, Adrian and their
music troupe for their best support. That is the
reason ‘Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol’ was an instant hit show.

Lino B. Dourado: Before coming to Kuwait I understand
that you provided music for some Konkani shows and
tiatrs in Europe. Also what difference to you find
between the audience back home and in foreign
countries?

Norman Cardoz: In Goa I play almost every alternate
day in tiatr, wedding reception, beat shows, etc. I
meet Goan audience very often. No doubt I received
respect and appreciation all over Goa. After the end
of the shows normally the people are in a hurry to go
home and we musicians are busy packing our
instruments. Whereas in foreign countries like Canada,
UK, Portugal, Kuwait and etc., a gullible audience
encircle you to get a handshake and sign a few
autographs from the artistes. It stunned me that these
lovely people stood for hours to get autographs. Life
is inspiration. You feel honoured. You feel like you
have achived your aim.

Lino B. Dourado: You are well-known in Goan music
world as a best solo artist. How long have you been
playing now in tiatr fraternity?

Norman Cardoz: To establish a strong identity for
myself, first of all I have to do my homework well. I
want to be as good as I can be and to do as much hard
work as possible. This is a constant challenge. In the
beginning I used to play the guitar in tiatr. In 2001
I started on keyboard. I wanted to be my own so I
started ‘one man band.’ Ultimately, I received
appreciation from different corners and in 2002
versatile actor, singer, director-producer Jose Rod
invited me to play in his new drama ‘Devan Dilem
Denvcharan Velem’ in Kuwait. That was my first one man
performance in a foreign country.

Lino B. Dourado: So this is your second time in
Kuwait?

Norman Cardoz: Yes.

Lino B. Dourado: Have you won any awards? When and
which.

Norman Cardoz: As a best musician I have won the
prestigious 2002 ‘Gulab Award’ for Mario Meneze’s
drama “Mhoji Maim Mhoji Dusman”. This award I shared
with most senior music director Diniz.

Lino B. Dourado: What have you to say regarding the
Parishioners of Nuvem in Kuwait?

Norman Cardoz: While receiving the Nuvem-Kuwait
Parishioners’ memento from the hands of Secretary Lino
Gabriel Fernandes, I was overwhelmed and tears rolled
down because of the kind love and honour that was
bestowed upon me by the villagers. It feels so good to
get recognition for my work. I am greatful not only to
those who are present for the reception but all those
ganv-bhav who remember me in a one way or the other.
I will never forget this moment. I thank the
organizers for a wonderful evening.

Lino B. Dourado: What is your message to Goans in
Kuwait?

Norman Cardoz: Together work for the betterment of
the Goan community. Encourage the youngsters in music
and theatrical arts. I hope to see more Goans into
such creativeness and music. Thank you Lino Bab.

A very good quality performance, 100% satisfaction
- Comedian Philip's musical show Tum Vhoir Aum
Sokol

Hello Gaspar,

It was great meeting you at the show. I have to admit
that we witnessed a very good quality performance in
Kuwait.

There could have been better ones which I may have not
attended under the shadow of some poor quality of
Tiatr’s I attended.

Thanks to a friend of mine and a well wisher, I had
the privilege of seating in the “AA” row and watching
the show from the first row.

The comedy was Hilarious, well performed and
absolutely flawless.

Musicians at the back did a fantastic job and indeed a
bundle of music talents.

PHILIP as a character was marvelous. He performed 100%
to what he promised and gave people their monies'
worth.

If he ever makes any shows in future, I sure will not
miss it.

I am looking forward to his COMEDY Film with T-Bush.
Kindly extend my personal good wishes and
congratulations to him. Great performer he is. I am
not leaving it short to compliment the others who
performed but overall they all put a fantastic show to
entertain the crowd.

The show was well organized and synchronized so there
was no waste of time (very important). The costumes
and showmanship was Great.

Kindly extend my personal good wishes and
congratulations to him Phillip and his team.

A MESSAGE from the Souvenir published to mark the
occasion and distributed free of charge to the
audience:

Friends!
With a heart overflowing with joy, I welcome you for
my second Konkani musical show Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol
after the successful presentation of my first Konkani
musical show Hem Kazar Koslem? in Kuwait, and other
GCC countries, in the summer of 2001.

My deep love for the Konkani stage right from my
childhood years have obligated me to remain devoted to
the undeniable fact, that the Konkani stage, over the
years, served as a catalyst to flourish our beloved
mother tongue Konkani, irrespective of caste and
creed. And, this phenomenon is precisely what
magnetizes me more and more towards the Konkani stage,
thus enabling me today to unfurl my second musical
show Tum Vhoir Aum Sokol.

Ever since the concept of today's musical show was
envisioned, I have burnt midnight oils in order to
assemble an amazing jumbo star cast all the way from
the UK, Goa and Kuwait. I sincerely regret my
inability to thank individually but, I express my
gratitude to all the visiting artistes and the
musicians. I also wish to thank all the local
artistes, technicians et el, for encouraging me to
present this glittering musical show.

Last but not the least, I open my heart and mind in
salulations to all lovers of the Konkani language and,
specially to all of you who are present this
evening. It is only with your unstinted support and
cooperation can our beloved mother tongue Konkani
shine in all the four corners of the world where a
lover of Konkani will set his foot upon. With this in
mind, enjoy the show. Long Live Konkani! Long live
Konkani Stage! Long Live Goa! Long Live India!

NO JOSE ROD'S SHOW

Jose Rods is not presenting a Konkani musical show titled Goencho Avaz which
was said to be organized by shining Stars of Goa, nor has he sent any
announcement for the What's On Column. The earlier announcement, by some
(mischief-mongers) said that 'Goencho Avaz' by Jose Rods, presented by shining
Stars of Goa will be held on Sept. 8, at 8:30 pm at Gulf English School,
Rumaithiya, any inconvience is regretted.

The mischief-mongers are to take note that Konkani/Tiatr lovers do not treat
the funny announcements sent for publication in the newspapers
as THE TRUTH. Such fake and malicious attempts are only the work of the
scorpions (vinchus)! We all know that few of a 'virus' formenting rot
and crab mentality have such a tendency to shine the shoes of
others, without being invited to do so. Possibly it's in their Konkan
heritage!

Proud Konkani lovers will focus high above the sky and support the Goan
tiatrists faternity to promote the rich cultural tradition of Goan
entertainment, namely the tiatr/one-act plays, and musicals. We have lots
of the 'bearded and confused' Konkani/Tiatr Lovers among the community who
act otherwise.

Targetting the well respected and talented Konkani stage stars has been their
vermonous forte. The net forums abound with such Goan fools and creapy
characters! We look forward to the day when such scorpions (specially the
Vinchu No. 1) wake up, shave clean from such filth and STOP such third
class 'acts' and 'nuisance'. Isn't this alien to Goan culture? If it isn't,
then it might sound good at the home village tinto for these negative-minded
people to defame others.

[Goanet] Manuel de Santa Cruz

2005-08-28 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
in politics, he was elected to represent
Santo Agostinho-Ubo Dando Ward 5 of Santa Cruz Village
Panchayat.

It was in March 1982, he looked for better pastures
and landed in Kuwait. He was elected, as Member of the
newly formed Goan Welfare Society (GWS)-Kuwait in 1989
and has been a committee member for several years
until recently. He worked for a major Trading Company
as a “Commercial Assistant” and while he was on
vacation the invasion of Kuwait took place. At this
point, he provided his full support towards the
movement in support of Kuwait condemning the invasion.
He rendered valuable support and assisted in whatever
way he could.

Upon his return to Kuwait in 1992, he continued his
passion for the Konkani stage and it was for Kuwait
Konkni Kendr (KKK’s) Songit Sanz (Musical Evening)
where he was bestowed the pen-name Manuel de Santa
Cruz. He acted for Kala Mogui Kuwait's one act
Konkani play Mafi Magtam (December 2002) written and
directed by Dominic Araujo in which he did a memorable
role as Mama (Paternal Uncle). Yet another
performance worth mentioning was for United Club of
Utorda's 2nd One Act Play Competition, also directed
by Dominic Araujo and written by Maria Esteves titled
Ho Niah Koslo?. Since then on and off he has acted
in Konkani tiatrs and musical shows.

Manuel was also elected as a Managing Committee Member
of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) and has
sung in the first KGTS Musical Show Tiatr Ani
Tiatrist.

While on vacation in Goa in December 1999, with the
assistance of Joaquim Jose Fernandes and fellow
villagers of Santo Agostinho Vaddo, he scripted and
directed his tiatr “Vegglozar” which was part of the
program presented by Santo Agostinho Vaddo during the
Christmas Season. I have assisted several amateur as
well as professional tiatrists to edit and script
their tiatrs, he recalls.

Manuel has two daughters and a son. I have a lovely
grand-daughter and a son-in-law, he smiles. He is well
supported by his wife, Espy, throughout his long
career.

Manuel has been well appreciated by the Konkani tiatr
lovers in Kuwait for his meticulous acting - the most
recent one being Rosary Ferns' Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem
Sukh (August 2005). A special mention is made here
that he supports the organizers and even donates
towards their efforts - his valuable time as well as
monetarily. He was also featured in Marcus Vaz' tiatr
Almachea Disa (Sept. 2004).

A tiatr is not only drama, or only music or only
comedy; it is a fine mixture of all the above
ingredients - drama, music, comedy and improvisation.
Appropriate blended music provided by a brass band is
a noteworthy element of this popular art form. I am
happy to see more of the brass band and blowing
instruments for a tiatr or a Konkani Musical. Tiatr
has today evolved as a powerful medium for mass
communication, Manuel remarks. We should continue to
demand more support from the Goa Government as well as
from the Central Government. Why shouldn't the State
Language of Goa and the Konkani Romi Script be
supported at par with the Devnagri script?

He is hailed by none other than the Konkani writer and
collector of Konkani books and archives, Brazinho
Soares (Kalapurkar) as A versatile actor and a good
tiatr writer and director in his article published in
Goa's only Konkani monthly publication GULAB under
the caption Manuel Fernandes - Boro tiatr-borovpi,
Voznadik bhumika korpi.

I will continue with my passion for acting and will
also, God willing, produce and direct tiatrs, when I
return back to Goa, Manuel says it with pride. Some
professional tiatrists have recently offered to have
him in their troupes, he laughs mischeviously. Here's
wishing you all the best!

1998. After a gap of three months, opportunity again
knocked on his door, and he landed in Kuwait and
joined a Japanese Automobile firm, and continues to
reside since. It was in 2000, he once again took to
the Konkani stage for Laurent Pereira's drama and
since have
composed and sang his own songs and also assisted his
colleagues (be it prompting, direction or revising
scripts).

Sanny remembers his earliest performance in Vepari
Veniceacho (Merchant of Venice) - a Konkani play
translated by Miss Amelia Gomes and directed by Peter
Dias where he played a comedy role. He acted in every
drama that took place in Quepem or in the surrounding
villages for Konkani tiatrs. It was at this junction
he started his career with the professional directors
like Jess Fernandes, along with Hortencio Pereira,
Salvador, Natty de Navelim, Nora, Cajetan de
Sanvordem, and C. D'Silva. This was the turning point
for Sanny when he was auditioned for singing at the
All India Radio (AIR), Panjim when he was recording
for Jess Fernandes Konkani radio recorded plays. For
a brief stint in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1975, Sanny sang
at Banghwadi when he was introduced by his cousin (who
played bass) to Paul Romy who staged a musical show.

Before flying to Saudi Arabia, Sanny acted in his home
village for Felix Pereira's tiatr Rogtak Rogot
Visronam and finally at Colva (1977) for Doganch
Puru written and directed by Nelson
(Nelson-Anthony-Conception fame). For the annual Kala
Academy tiatr competitions, he was rewarded for his
dedication towards singing Konkani songs and have
acted twice for Ceasar D'Mello. Even while on
vacation he participated in the Konkani singing
competitions in 1986 and won the award as the Best
Singer for the eight time.

A man of few words, he humbly states I do not
consider myself as an actor, but can convincingly do
small roles. I am good at singing and composing
solos. On and off, he is seen on the Konkani stage
in Kuwait as part of a duo or a trio songs
combination. At last week's Konkani drama of Rosary
Ferns' Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem Sukh his song saluting
the work of Aya (Maid) received a thunderous
applause, as well as for his acting as a mentally
challenged boy. His song Kazar in Rosary Ferns'
Raag Konkani Album has been well received. Sanny
recalls that apart from tiatr he sang for a Hindi
orchestra (songs and medleys), as well as crooned for
a dance band Young Challengers for some time. He is
thankful to Mr. Mrs. Albano Pinto for introducing
him to writer-director Laurent Pereira, for whom he
expresses his gratitude for giving him a big boost.

Sanny can recollect with sharp precision events he had
witnessed in his younger days including the happenings
during the pre and post liberation years in his
village during his schooling days. When time permits
from his hectic office routine, Sanny writes for the
Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter under the caption
Cross+Roads, as well as other articles on Goanet and
The Goan Forum. His well composed songs on social
themes including Immigation to England, Mog are
well remembered by the audience. His desire is to
release a Konkani album of his collection of songs
shortly. Here's wishing Sanny all the very best.

[Goanet]TSKK Konkani Romi Lipi (Script) Booklet released

2005-08-18 Thread http://www.goa-world.com
TSKK Romi Lipi released
NT News Service

Mapusa Aug 17: TSKK Romi Lipi, a 52-page booklet which
deals with the modified Roman orthography of Thomas
Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) to write Konkani in
Roman script, was released by the veteran Konkani
singer, Mr Ullas Buyanv at a function organised by
Dalgado Konknni Akademi at Grace Church Hall, Margao
on August 15.

According to the press release, the book is written by
Dr Pratap Naik, S J and it is published by TSKK,
Alto-Porvorim. While releasing the book Mr Buyanv said
though he is a Konkani speaker and supporter of
Konkani, for his religious purpose he uses Sanskrit
and Marathi. If the entire Hindu community uses
Marathi for their religious purpose, the Goan catholic
community has the right to continue and foster their
religious tradition using Konkani in Roman script.
Further he said that even though the British never
ruled Goa, present day Goans have accepted English and
discarded Portuguese. Stating that this was sad, Mr
Buyanv said Goans should once again take interest to
study Portuguese to understand old documents and
records related to land and property.

The President of the Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA), Mr
Tomazinho Cardozo, said that every Goan should take
pride to speak Konkani and to read Konkani in any
script. He stressed the point that without Konkani Goa
will lose its identity, and Goans will become
strangers in their own land. The TSKK Director, Pratap
Naik, compared Devanagari and Roman scripts to two
wheels of a cart. With these two wheels the cart will
move smoothly. Both the wheels are equally important
and necessary for Konkani to exist, to flourish and to
progress.

TSKK took the initiative to modify the existing Roman
orthography to suit the Konkani speech sounds, the
requirements of e-mail and other computer
applications. TSKK has evolved an orthography for
Konkani which is scientific and at the same time user
friendly. TSKK orthography makes use of a linear
typing system without diacritics, making use of only
the standard computer keyboard. It has used 24
alphabets of the Roman alphabet and added only two
phonetic symbols available on the keyboard. Except
three major and one minor speech sound all other
speech sounds of Konkani are correctly represented in
TSKK orthography. At present among all the
orthographies used to write Konkani, TSKK Orthography
is the closest to the pronunciation. It has 96%
accuracy.

This booklet contains a few Konkani texts in TSKK
Roman Orthography, Devanagari and Kannada scripts.
TSKK hopes that these texts will help Konkanis, and
others to read and write Konkani in Roman script. The
booklet is available at TSKK office, Zito Almeida,
Margao, St. Paul’s Bookshop, Panaji, Varsha Bookstall,
Panaji and at Bom Jesus Bookstall, Old Goa, the press
release adds.

[Goanet]Congratulations Simon Gonsalves

2005-08-17 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Congratulations Simon Gonsalves

The goa-world.com team (Kuwait) joins Konkani tiatr lovers and congratulates
the very talented Simon Gonsalves for the excellent presentation of
captivating sceneries and artistic impressions (using state-of-the-art tools)
for the Konkani tiatr Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem Sukh held last Friday in
Kuwait. In fact Simon's creativeness were the highlights of the evening and a
great blessings in disguise which saved the day. Simon Gonsalves had earlier
shown his talents in his own Gods Gift Everly Production's “TUZO GAUM MHOJEM
NAUM in Kuwait in November 2004. Blessed with oodles of talent, creative
ability, versatility and a wide range of related performance skills Simon
Gonsalves has carved a niche for himself.

After the success of “TUJEA KALLZAK VINCHAR” staged in 2002 in Kuwait, for
Simon Gonsalves there is no looking back. While the rich script boasts about
family values, culture, traditions, the cast mix of versatile artistes, also
proves his penchant for selection of artistes and musicians. The scenes and
the stage settings were the added attraction at this competition. Simon
Gonsalves is also well known for backstage acumen, he has won much
appreciation and awards for the splendid stage settings for his one act
plays “DEVACHO GUTT DEV ZANNAM (Best Director - 1st Prize Winner - 2003)
and “MOGACHI ZHOR” (2nd Prize Winner and Best Script Writer Award Winner -
2004) at the annual one-act Konkani play competitions organized by United Club
of Utorda-Kuwait.

One of the talented young actors popular today who can play good guy, bad guy,
and any character role with equal aplomb, Simon Gonsalves, continues to regale
the audiences with a chameleon like ability to lose himself in the roles that
he plays. Popularly known with a penchant for playing bad guys, and any
character dangerously benchmarked on edge psychotics, and he enacts it so
well ! He has also directed three tiatrs back home. He has also won the best
actor and best stage setting prizes for his brother's Felix Gonsalves'
tiatr RESPET DIAT for KHK's one-act play competition not too long ago.
Simon Gonsalves has created an unique record also by presenting one CD of his
third album DEVACHIM DENIM (Ronny Socorro Productions) to each and everyone
present for his tiatr TUZO GAUM MHOJEM NAUM in November 2004 in Kuwait. This
Konkani tiatr will also be released all over Goa in the first half of 2006.
His earlier Konkani Albums FOKONNAM and MHOJO BHAU were well received and
had enchanting Konkani songs penned and sung by him.

[Goanet]Dr. WILFRED D'SOUZA without PORTFOLIOS ?

2005-06-15 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=72649

Outside support: NCP move leaves D'Souza stunned

RAJU NAYAK

Posted online: Wednesday, June 15, 2005

PANAJI, JUNE 14, 2005: The NCP high command has decided not to participate in
the Congress-led government in Goa and will instead support it from outside.

The decision has upset its state chief Dr Wilfred D'Souza who is
Deputy Chief Minister in the Pratapsinh Rane cabinet and also holds the plum
Tourism and Environment portfolios.

D'Souza, who will have to give up his plum portfolios, feigned
ignorance about the NCP move.We don't know the decision of the high command,
his aide said.

The Deputy Chief Minister last week threatened to withdraw NCP
support to the Rane government after his party colleague Mickey Pacheco failed
to win a ministerial berth.

Aware that the Rane government survives on a slim majority,
D'Souza began to sound out the BJP on forming an alternative government.

This prompted the NCP to rush two observers from Delhi to pacify
D'Souza and declare that the party would not pull out of the government. But
D'Souza may yet spring a surprise now that he is without a portfolio.

The NCP decision to provide only outside support comes when Rane
had reportedly assured Pacheco he would be made sports minister after awarding
only two portfolios among his 10-member team. Rane discussed Pacheco's
induction with legislature party members and his cabinet colleagues before
conveying the decision to the high command. Today's NCP decision took even the
Goa Congress leadership by surprise.

SIDELIGHTS

*The former chief minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar and his one-time trusted
lieutenant, Mr Digambar Kamat, sitting side by side in the second row for
invitees and chatting with each other was perhaps the scene that attracted
maximum photographers and cameramen to capture the unique sight, besides the
attention of those who attended the ceremony.

*The shamiana erected for the swearing-in ceremony was packed to its capacity,
with around 200 to 300 people standing outside it.

*Around 10 buses carrying Mr Rane supporters from his constituency, Poryem,
arrived at the Raj Bhavan shouting slogans in support of their leader.

*Mr Pratapsing Rane, who arrived 10 minutes late for the swearing-in ceremony
was attired in a black Jodhpuri suit, same as his cabinet colleague, Dr
Wilfred de Sousa. The third minister to be sworn-in, Mr Ramakrishna Dhavlikar
however chose to wear a kurta-payjama.

*Mr Rane took the oath of office and oath of secrecy in English, Dr de Sousa
opted for Konkani, while Mr Dhavlikar went for Marathi, thus maintaining a
linguistic balance in the swearing-in ceremony.

*Just before the swearing-in ceremony, the chief secretary, Ms Kiran Dhingra
read out the proclamation from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, revoking the near three-
month Presidential rule in the state and setting Goa assembly free from its
suspended animation state.

*The Raj Bhavan premises witnessed a drizzle as the swearing-in ceremony
progressed, with the bright sunlight continuing over the venue.

*The former ministers in the previous Congress governments, Dr Wilfred
Mesquita, Mr Domnick Fernandes, Mr Isidore Fernandes, and Mr Jose Philip
D’Sousa were also present at the swearing-in ceremony.

*Those conspicuous by their absence were the leaders of the Maharashtrawadi
Gomantak Party - a party which is a faction of the Congress-led United
Legislature Party - including the MGP president, Mr Pandurang Raut.
