[Goanet] Bible and Konknni
languages the translation of Bible is in progress. As on Census of India 1991, in India there are 862 languages. In India the entire Bible is translated into 50 languages. New testament is translated into 81 languages. A portion of the Bible is available in 50 languages. The Bible is the most widely distributed book in the world. Both Hebrew Scripture and the Christian Bible have been translated more times and into more languages - more than 2,403 languages in all - than any other book. It is said that the Bible is the best-selling book of all-time. In some cities, the Bible is considered to be the most frequently stolen book. No book in the world has been translated in so many languages of the world as the Bible. E. Printed Bible When John Gutenberg made the printing machine in Europe, the first book to roll out of this printing press was the Latin Bible in 1450. The first English New Testament was printed in 1525 A.D. The most popular translation of the Bible in English is called the King James Version, which was published in the year 1611 A.D. This Bible is used in many universities around the world for teaching English language. Later on, many other translations in English like RSV, NIV, GNB, and many other versions were published. The translation of the Bible into other languages of the world also continued. The most important and influential of translations of the Bible into German is the Luther Bible. The influence that Martin Luther's translation had on the development of the German language is often compared to influence the King James Version had on English. Bible has inspired and continues to inspire countless poets, writers, artists, musicians to produce literature, art and culture. In the world the highest number of copies printed, sold and read are that of Holy Bible. Compared to Catholics, Protestant Christians have done enormous work to translate, print, sell and distribute Bible. F. Bible Translations in Konknni: In history of Konknni language the credit of translating a portion of the Bible for the first time, goes to seventeenth century Italian Jesuit missionary Ignazio Arcamone (1615-1683) who worked in Salcette, Goa. His Sogllea Vorunsache Vanjel was printed at Rachol Seminary Printing Press in 1667. It had 120 + 335 folios. No copy is available of this book. Since then a number of attempts have been made by various people to translate either New Testament or a portion of the Bible into Konknni in Roman, Kannada and Devanagari scripts. Protestant missionary William Carey at Serampore, West Bengal; Joaquim A. Fernandes, Mumbai; Fr. Rymond Mascarenhas, Mangalore; Fr. Sylvester Menezes, Mangalore; Fr. C.C.A. Pai, S.J., Mangalore; Fr. Vasco do Rego, S.J., Goa; Fr. Moreno de Souza, S.J., Goa; Felicio Cardozo, Goa have translated a portion of the Bible into Konknni. Among Konknni speakers there are hardly any Protestant Christians. If there were, the Bible would have been translated into Konknni in 19th or early 20th century. The credit of translating the entire Bible into Konknni for the first time, goes to William R. da Silva of Mangalore Diocese, Karnataka. He translated the entire Bible into Konknni in Kannada script. Konknni Bible committee at Mangalore published it in 1997. Since this Bible did not have the Imprimatur (official permission of the Church Authorities) it could be used only for private use. Mangalore Diocese published its official translation in 2000. Rev. Dr. William Barboza translated the Old Testament and Rev. Dr. Victor Pinto translated the New Testament. For the first edition 30,000 copies were printed. The copies were made available at Rs. 100/-. Konknni readers in Roman script had to wait till 4 June 2006 for the Konknni Bible to see the light in their script and dialect! It was released on Sunday, 4 June 2006 at Se Cathedral by the Archbishop of Goa at 10.00 a.m. during the Eucharistic celebration of Pentecost Feast. For the first edition 60,000 copies have been printed, of which 40,000 are booked at pre-publication price of Rs. 150/-. The post-publication price is Rs. 300/-. Since most of the Konknni readers in Roman script are from lower middle class and middle class families it would have been ideal and desirable to subsidize the price of the Bible and sell it for Rs. 100/- only. This translation is bound to boost the use of Konknni in Roman script. Pratap Naik, S.J. Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr B.B.Borkar Road Alto Porvorim, Goa - 403 521 Ph. [Goanet] Zudas Konknni play: A cry for forgiveness and justice
News -- Mangalore: Judas Cries out for Forgiveness and Justice, Yet Again Daijiworld News Network - Mangalore (MB) Mangalore, Mar 20: It indeed needs a lot of gumption and grit to stage a play of this kind. The playwright had it all right. The performer who played Judas, Arun Raj Rodrigues, too had it and so did the Mangalore University's Chair in Christianity and Dharma Samanvaya organization who staged the play. A good part of the large crowd that gathered in the amphitheatre of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work in the late evening of Sunday, March 19, 2006 was perhaps greeted and treated by kind of a shock treatment as the play 'Zudas' in Konkani, penned by Dr. Pratap Naik SJ of TSKK, Goa and directed by Denis Monteiro Pai, Kiram-Vamanjoor slowly unfolded. It was a challenge to the thinking minds to ruminate and analyze, to divert from the set theories and dogmas and get into a healthy debate. If the saints-to-be, before their Canonization, could have Devil's Advocates to run them down in every way possible, why couldn't Judas, perhaps, unjustifiably, the most despicable character in the whole universe, have his defenders and defence counsels? It was in this spirit that the audience watched the play avidly and in a pin drop silence. Judas' character is thrown open threadbare to public scrutiny. Several characters from the scriptures are compared and contrasted, to make the viewers think and masticate the thoughts. Was Judas indeed a villain of the piece, or a victim of a smear campaign? At the end of it all, the playwright, the solo artiste and the analytical audience - all come out clean, with a clear mind and judgment. If the play succeeded in keeping the entire audience glued to their seats, the interaction that followed provided even more grist to the thinking minds. It was indeed proof to the fact that the modern society is more open to dialogue and discussion than remaining shackled to perverse theories and thinking. Chair in Christianity head and professor Dr John Fernandes moderated a healthy and thought-provoking discussion on various facets of the theme and dialogues of the play. It was heart-warming to see several scholars, besides Dr Pratap Naik, putting forth their viewpoints in a cordial and accommodating way. It was felt that avenues be explored to stage the play at different venues around town and district to create awareness and tolerance over different shades of opinion. Editor's note: The play had its maiden show in Mangalore almost two years ago. It took more than two years for the play to see its second show. What could have been the reason? Refusal of the people to see beyond the tunnel vision imposed by age-old beliefs? Or is it because any questioning attitude could be looked down upon as kind of heresy? The play was first staged at Kalaangann on March 7, 2004. Daijiworld published a review of the play by Resident Editor Richie Lasrado on March 9. 2004. The review was highly acclaimed by scholars, no less in eminence like former Goa University Vice Chancellor Prof Olivinho Gomes, Mangalore University's Chair of Christianity head and professor Dr John Fernandes and several others. As requested by many of our readers and for the benefit of those who missed reading it the last time, we reproduce the review. Juxtaposition of Judas - Play Reviewed by Richie Lasrado, Daijiworld News Network - Mangalore Name of the play: Zudas Format: Monologue Language: Konkani Playwright: Pratap Naik SJ, Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, Alto-Porvorim, Goa Duration: An hour and 30 minutes Presented by: Mandd group of Mandd Sobhann, Mangalore Date: Sunday, March 7, 2004 at 6-30 pm Director: Denis Monteiro Pai, Kiram-Vamanjoor Background musical score: Joel Pereira, Bijai Role of Judas played by: Arun Raj Rodrigues, Valencia Judas Iscariot. Son of Simon Iscariot, the slaughterer. A much-abhorred, much-detested man in history. An unforgettable Biblical character, perennially representing perfidy. A full-life manifestation of betrayal and treachery. One who sold his soul for thirty silver. An apostle-turned-apostate who, with his much-debated 'kiss of death', betrayed his Master, which act finally led to the latter's death on the Cross. Judas is generous in a way. Even today, he willingly lends his name to any number of people as long as they qualify by betraying the faith invested in them. But is there a lateral view? Could he only be a much-maligned man? A few novels have been written with stories woven around Judas' character. A best-seller relates the story of an explorer in the Holy Land who chances upon Judas' scrolls, which put the entire picture of Jesus' life and times in a totally different complexion. They explorer takes the scrolls to the Vatican. They create a storm there and things are never the same again for the poor explorer. Similarly, William Klassen's research book 'Judas:Betrayer or friend of Jesus?' sifts the evidence

Phone: (0832) 2224285 / 2223528 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] AGCCSJA Dear Madam/Sir, Sub: Govt plans to amend Goa State Education Act THIS IS AN S.O.S. ! AND A TIMELY ALERT ! The Navhind Times and Herald of Friday, 03 March 2006, reported: The state government plans to amend Section 4 of the Goa State Education Act, 1984, for making a provision to grant permission for opening the non-aided primary schools across the State. The government now plans to amend the Act and incorporate a provision so as to grant easy permission to open un-aided primary and secondary schools. Sources in the Secretariat said that the government was thinking on this line as there is heavy demand for opening of the new English primary schools. Besides, many politicians are also interested in establishing English primary schools.. This would mean that with the removal of distance restriction hither to in force, there would be a proliferation of un-aided English medium primary and secondary schools all over Goa, and you may soon find un-aided English medium primary and secondary schools surrounding you. Considering the widespread demand from parents in recent years for English medium schools, shifting away from Konkani medium Schools, it is very likely that your admissions of new students will fall, and some of your students may even shift to the unaided English Schools. The long-term effect would be paucity of students in your Institution. This potential threat in the immediate future can be faced boldly by you if you also immediately, from the current year, open English medium unaided primary sections in your school, engaging expert trained Teachers for English medium teaching ON CONTRACT BASIS, TO OFFER QUALITY ENGLISH INSTRUCTION/EDUCATION, AND CHARGE FEES TO THE PARENTS/STUDENTS. With Institutional advantage you enjoy compared to those Primary and Secondary Schools mushrooming all over the place, you will be able to retain your lead with regard to admissions and retention of your existing students. THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ON AN EMERGENCY BASIS, AND ACTION SHOULD BE INITIATED WITHOUT DELAY FOR THE FUTURE PROTECTION OF YOUR INSTITUTION. In future Government may consider under pressure from Politicians, allowing aid to the English medium schools. You may urge your Provincial to focus on this vital issue during the forthcoming conclave of Provincials convened by the Archbishop of Goa. ACT NOW, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!! [Goanet] TSKK CALL TO BOYCOTT ALL INDIA KONKANI PARISHAD
January 20, 2006 TSKK CALL TO BOYCOTT ALL INDIA KONKANI PARISHAD Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK), Goa, earnestly requests all Konkanis spread throughout the world and those who love and care about the survival of Konkani, to boycott and openly show their protest during the forthcoming Konkani Conference organized by All India Konkani Parishad (AIKP) at Panaji from February 10 to 12, 2006. The reasons for the boycott and protest are serious in nature, and they are as follows: 1. AIKP instead of respecting the varieties of Konkani and thereby forging unity among the various regions, communities, dialects and scripts (namely, Roman and Kannada along with Devanagari) has caused irreparable damage to the unity of Konkanis, by adopting a retrograde policy of ek lipi, ek bhas, ek sahitya, ek samaz (one script, one dialect/language, one literature, one community). 2. Through its above mentioned communal policy, the All India Konkani Parishad is sowing the seed of communal division, hatred and disharmony in Goa and among Konkanis spread throughout the country. 3. Through manipulative politics AIKP has attempted to impose one script (Devanagari script) and one dialect on all others (a) at the Sahitya Akademi level (b) at the Goa Government level (c) at the other State Governments level (especially in Karnataka). 4. In the name of development of Konkani, AIKP promotes exclusively Devanagari script to perpetuate its monopoly and hegemony. 5. AIKP does not accept the basic demand of a large section of the Goan Community. The demand is to include Roman script as the official script of Konkani side by side with Devanagari script in the Goa Official Language Act 1987. Similarly AIKP does not respect and accept the demand of Konkanis to teach Konkani in schools in Kannada script in Karnataka. 6. AIKP has remained an 'Exclusive Club' of a fistful of persons and organizations to get funds from Govt. and the public to organize unproductive conferences. No genuine attempt has been made either to include active registered bodies into the AIKP or promote Konkani language and literature. 7. More than 65 years of its existence, AIKP has never ever tried to expand the Konkani movement into territories where Konkani exists but where Konkani organizations don't. The southern districts of Maharashtra are a clear example. 8. All India Konkani Parishad is not a Registered Society. Hence it has no legal status and right to ask for, or to receive Govt. grants, subsidy and funds. 9. On 23 January 1978 an institution called All India Konkani Sahitya Parishad was registered as a Society in Goa. Its Registration number was 6/78. However, this Society never renewed its registration not even once. To renew the registration of a Society Audited Accounts and Secretary's Report must be submitted annually to the Registrar and Head of Notary Services. Since All India Konkani Sahitya Parishad never renewed its registration, we presume that it never submitted the audited accounts to the Registrar and Head of Notary Services. Hence All India Konkani Parishad ceased to exist. It is truly an unrepresentative body which has no legal existence and whose functioning is opposed to all democratic norms. 10. AIKP has no legal or moral right to represent Konkanis spread throughout the country, because it has been working against the unity of Konkanis 11. A coterie of writers who control AIKP also control and manipulate practically all the matters related to Konkani at the Goa Govt. and Central Govt. departments and institutions. 12. The same old people preside over the proceedings at the conferences organized by AIKP. The same old topics and issues are discussed. The same old resolutions are passed, and thereafter these resolutions are conveniently forgotten. AIKP does not have the vision, the initiative, the personnel or the infrastructure to implement or even to follow up these resolutions. If the AIKP cannot be forgiven for all the above sins arising out of acts of omission, it can never be absolved of its many sins of commission. The time has come for Konkanis to voice their opinion against this oppressive institution AIKP. Unity among people can never be achieved by imposition of one script and one dialect over the others. 'Unity in Diversity' meaning unity by accepting the three major scripts (Roman, Devanagari and Kannada) and the various dialects, is the only formula which can bring Konkanis together, and assure the very survival of Konkani. The least we could do is: 1. Boycott the Konkani Conference scheduled on 10 to 12 February 2006. 2. Take active part in the protest meetings which will be held outside the Conference premises from 10 to 12 February 2006. 3. Bring pressure on the Goa Govt. not to give grants/subsidy, funds for the Konkani conference to be held from 10 to 12 February 2006 at Panaji. 4. Openly expose and protest against AIKP's misdeeds. 5. Make them answerable to the people and the courts of law
[Goanet] 2005 Sahitya Akademi award to Konkani
2005 Sahitya Akademi Award to Konkani: an unethical procedure 2005 award of Sahitya Akademi for outstanding contribution to Konkani literature was declared to Mr. N. Shivdas for his Konkani collection of stories 'Bhangarsal'. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/-. Konkani community and writers are totally surprised that Sahitya Akademi has decided to give this award to Mr. N. Shivdas, who is a member of the Advisory Board of the Sahitya Akademi! To select a book for the award a procedure is followed by the Sahitya Akademi. In this procedure the Advisory Board of each language is involved. Advisory board of Konkani language consists of 10 members and Mr. N. Shivdas is one of the members of Advisory Board for the years 2003-2007. How a member of Advisory Board can be nominated for the award? Is this act justified? Is it based on sound reasoning and ethical code? These questions are hotly discussed these days among Konkanis. The role of the advisory Board to select a book for the award is evident from terms and conditions of Sahitya Akademi for the year 2003 -2007. From this procedure it is evident that the Advisory Board of a language plays the key role to select a book for the annual award. In this background it is utterly unreasonable and unethical on the part of the Sahitya Akademi to give its award to a member of its advisory Board. Hence the Sahitya Akademi should immediately withdraw its 2005 award for Konkani announced to N. Shivadas. Otherwise Sahitya Akademi's prestigious name is at stake. To prevent future manipulation Sahitya Akademi should add one more rule, namely a work of an author who is a member of the Advisory Board of the Akademi is not eligible for the award of the Sahitya Akademi, in its stipulated regulations for its awards. [Goanet] 2005 Sahitya Akademi award to Konkani: A case of unethical procedure
-- | Wishing all Goanetters | | a Prosperous | | and | | Happy New Year - 2006 | |Goanet - http://www.goanet.org | -- 2005 Sahitya Akademi Award to Konkani: unethical procedure 2005 award of Sahitya Akademi for outstanding contribution to Konkani literature was declared to Mr. Once again a few among those who promote Konkani in Devanagari script are exposed as cunning manipulators and swindlers. But in the society they are considered as thinkers, writers, poets, artists and so on. The role of the advisory Board to select a book for the award is evident from the following terms and conditions of Sahitya Akademi for the year 2003 -2007. PREPARATION OF THE GROUND LIST AND OBTAINING RECOMMENDATIONS FROM MEMBERS OF THE LANGUAGE ADVISORY BOARD: 01. The Akademi shall have every year a ground list prepared of eligible books of each recognized language. Preparation of the ground list shall be entrusted to an expert or, at the discretion of the President, to two experts. 02. Each language Advisory Board member shall send a panel of not more than five names and the President of the Akademi shall choose the expert or experts out of this panel. 03. In preparing the ground list, the expert or experts shall strictly conform to the criteria of eligibility laid down in these rules. The ground list so prepared along with the ground list of the previous years shall be send to all the members of the concerned language Advisory Board (including the Convener) with the request to recommend, by such date as may be specified by the Akademi, two titles each. THE PRELIMINARY PANEL AND ITS FUNCTIONS: 01. The Preliminary panel shall consist of ten Referees. These Referees shall be nominated by the President after considering suggestions of the members of the Language Advisory Board concerned. 02. The recommendations received from members of the Language Advisory Board shall be compiled and sent to each referee. THE JURY AND ITS FUNCTION: 1. The recommendations of Referees in the Preliminary Panel shall be considered by three-member Jury. The jury members shall be selected by the President after considering the recommendations in this behalf by the members of the Language Advisory Board concerned. From this procedure it is evident that the Advisory Board of a language plays the key role to select a book for the annual award. In this background it is utterly unreasonable and unethical on the part of the Sahitya Akademi to give its award to a member of its advisory Board. Hence the sahitya akademi should immediately withdraw its 2005 award for Konkani. Pratap Naik, S.J. THOMAS STEPHENS KONKNNI KENDR B. B. Borkar Road, Alto Porvorim Goa - 403 521, INDIA. [Goanet] History of Konkani in Roman script in Goa (1556 -2005)
(Exchange Talkies of India, China and Africa) was released at Dasharata Cinema at Mapuça. It was directed and produced by Mr. Jerry Braganza of Mapuça. THIRD PHASE: 1960: In 1960's Mr. Joaquim A. Fernandes was convinced that for historical reasons and the ease and universality of Roman characters, Konkani should be written in Roman script as it was done by the missionaries. Therefore, he introduced the current orthography to write Konkani in Roman script. His book 'Konknni Nad-Xastr (vo Romi Lipient Konknni Borounchi Rit)' was published in 1972. 1975: 26th February The General Council of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi recognized Konkani as a literary language. No script was mentioned in the resolution. 1981: The Advisory Board ( which had maximum number of Devanagari supporters) of Konkani of Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, recommended to Sahitya Akademi to accept Devanagari script as the official script of Konkani. 1983: Fr. Freddy J. da Costa started Konkani monthly 'Gulab'. After Fr.Freddy's death his brother Fausto da Costa is the editor and publisher. 1987: 4th February Goa Assembly passed the Language bill. Thus Konkani written in Devanagari script became the State language of Goa. 14th March TSKK called a meeting of Konkani writers in Roman script at Jesuit House, Panaji to discuss how to introduce Devanagari script for writing Konkani. During this meeting a few important leaders of Konknni Porjecho Avaz (KPA) and writers expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the Language Act 1987. Since then TSKK began to find out from various people the reason for dissatisfaction. TSKK realized to foster Konkani in Goa Devanagari and Roman script are essential. Therefore TSKK took the lead and contacted Fr. Freddy da Costa and Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo and discussed the course of action and decided to call a meeting of Roman script writers, readers and well-wishers. 1988: 17th July a seminar of Roman script Konkani writers was called at Instituto de Piedade, Panaji. During the seminar Fr. Pratap Naik, S.J. of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) proposed to Roman script writers and readers the idea of establishing Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) to promote Konkani in Roman script and submitted a master plan for Konkani in Roman script and proposed to start. 28th August a seminar was held at Loyola High School. Margão. Here Fr. Pratap Naik once again stressed the need of starting DKA. Participants accepted his suggestion and DKA was established. Fr. Pratap Naik made it clear to the members that he will not accept any office of DKA. Hence an ad hoc managing committee was elected. Fr. Freddy J. da Costa was chosen as the president, Mr. Agnelo Pires as the Vice-President, Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo as secretary. Mr. Thomas C. Fernandes as Jt. Secretary, Mr. Prabhakar Tendulkar as the treasurer. Mr. Zito Almeida and Fr. Eusebio Ferrão as members and Fr. Pratap Naik was nominated as the advisor. Fr. Pratap was enrolled as the first member of DKA. DKA appointed a special committee headed by Fr. Matthew Almeida,s.j. to prepare Konkani orthography in Roman script. It was published by DKA. 1989: 2 July DKA General Council elected new Managing Committee. President:Fr. Antimo Gomes, Vice-President:Fr. Planton Faria, Secretary:Tomazinho Cardozo, Joint Secretary: Mr. Vincy Quadros, Members:Cajetan Vaz, Mrs. Berta Menezes and Mr. Tarkeshwar Naik. 1990-2004: June 1990 to 23 March DKA remained dormant due to various reasons. Meanwhile TSKK persuaded the office bearers either to revive DKA or if it is not possible to close it down. 1992: 20th August through an amendment to the Constitution of India Konkani was included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. 2004: 25th March Fr. Pratap Naik took the initiative to revive the DKA. He discussed this matter with Fr. Freddy da Costa and Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo. Subsequently two times Fr. Freddy, Mr. Tomazinho and Mr. Prabhakar Tendulkar and Fr. Pratap Naik, s.j. met at Gulab office at Panaji to discuss the matter of Roman script and DKA. 12th May Romi writers and readers were invited at T.B.Cunha Hall to discuss the matter related to Roman script. It was officially decided once again to revive DKA. Fr. Freddy was chosen as the convener. Secretary and treasurer remained the same as before. Wilmix Mazarello, Cipriano Lopes, Cosma Fernandes, Dr. Olivinho Gomes, Jose S. Fernandes, Fr. Peter Raposo, Fr. Ave Maria Afonso, Wilfred Menezes, Willy Goes, Andrew and Fr. Pratap Naik, s.j. were nominated as members of the ad hoc managing committee. 17th May Fr. Freddy died. 19th June Mr. Tomazinho was chosen as the convener to lead DKA. 16th July Dr. Wilfred de Souza raised a Private Member's Resolution in the Goa Assembly, which was amended and adopted unanimously and then passed as a resolution by the house. 2005: 8th May 150 years of Dalgado's birth was celebrated at Caritas Hall Panaji. Fr. Vasco do Rego, S.J. was conferred with the first Dalgado Konknni Puroskar of Rs.50,000
[Goanet]RELEASE of TSKK KONKANI ORTHOGRAPHY IN ROMAN SCRIPT
TSKK KONKANI ORTHOGRAPHY IN ROMAN SCRIPT TSKK Romi Lipi a booklet of 52 pages which deals with the modified Roman orthography of Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) to write Konkani in Roman script, was released by the veteran Konkani singer Mr. Ullas Buyanv on 15th August during a public function organized by Dalgado Konknni Akademi at Grace Church Hall, Marg=E3o. Konkanis who read, write and support Konkani in Roman script were present for the function. The book is written by Dr. Pratap Naik, S.J and it is published by TSKK, Alto Porvorim. While releasing the book Mr. Buyanv said, though he is a Konkani speaker and supporter of Konkani, for his religious purpose he uses Sanskrit and Marathi. This is the ground reality with practically the entire Hindu community of Goa. If the entire Hindu community uses Marathi for their religious purpose, the Goan catholic community has the right to continue and foster their religious tradition using Konkani in Roman script. Further he said that the Portuguese ruled Goa for 450 years. The British never ruled Goa. Even then, present day Goans have accepted English and discarded Portuguese. This is the sad part of the story. Goans once again should take interest to study Portuguese to understand old documents and records related to land and property. Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, the President of the Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) explained to the audience the aims and objectives of DKA. He said that every Goan should take pride to speak Konkani and to read Konkani in any script. He stressed the point that without Konkani Goa will lose its identity, and Goans will become strangers in their own land. Pratap Naik, the director of TSKK compared Devanagari and Roman scripts to two wheels of a cart. With these two wheels the cart will move smoothly. Both the wheels are equally important and necessary for Konkani to exist, to flourish and to progress. He further challenged those who oppose Roman script saying that they should give up cashew, pineapple, papaya, potato, desk, table, bench, chair, computer, scooter and hundreds of objects of foreign origin. If these objects of foreign origin are part of Goan way of life then Roman script with its 494 years of history in Goa is the integral part of Goan life. Roman script for Konkani has come to remain in Goa and it will continue to remain. Fr. Cleto Pereira, the parish priest of Grace Church was the guest of honour. Mr. Salvador Fernandes, the secretary of DKA proposed vote of thanks. Mr. Michael Gracias, a budding tiatrist was a compere of the function. The function was followed by a quiz competition on the theme 'Independence of India'. TSKK took the initiative to modify the existing Roman orthography to suit the Konkani speech sounds, the requirements of e-mail and other computer applications. TSKK has evolved an orthography for Konkani which is scientific and at the same time user friendly. TSKK orthography makes use of a linear typing system without diacritics, making use of only the standard computer keyboard. It has used 24 alphabets of the Roman alphabet and added only two phonetic symbols available on the keyboard. Except three major and one minor speech sound all other speech sounds of Konkani are correctly represented in TSKK orthography. At present among all the orthographies used to write Konkani, TSKK Orthography is the closest to the pronunciation. It has 96% accuracy. 100% accuracy could not be attained because TSKK orthography makes use of physically visible computer keyboard and avoids diacritical marks. One has to read what is written just like Sanskrit orthography. Therefore it is ideal and best suited to write Konkani. This booklet contains a few Konkani texts in TSKK Roman Orthography, Devanagari and Kannada scripts. TSKK hopes that these texts will help Konkanis, and others to read and write Konkani in Roman script. The booklet is available at : TSKK office, Zito Almeida, Margao. St. Paul's Bookshop, Panaji, Varsha Bookstall, Panaji Bom Jesus Bookstall, Old Goa.
[Goanet]e-mail ID of institutions of Konkanis
Sir, kindly give publicity to the following request. Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) is a Konkani research, educational and cultural centre named after the 16th century English Jesuit Thomas Stephens (1549-1619). a renowned linguist, Marathi poet and Konkani grammarian and writer. TSKK is recognized by Goa University as postgraduate research centre in Konkani. TSKK is convinced that Konkani is still alive because of multiplicity of scripts. Imposing one script will lead to the death of the language. Through dialogue and mutual understanding alone one script for Konkani evolved. At present in the Konkani field the script controversy has been raised by Devanagari proponents. In this context TSKK wants to share with Konkanis (Konkani speakers/ people of Konkani origin) facts, data, articles related to Konkani and scripts. In this context we request those Konkani institutions or institutions run by Konkanis who are interests to receive such information could contact TSKK through e-mail Pratap Naik, S.J. [Goanet]Karnataka Konkani Academy and script
Abstract: In response to the barrage of anti-propaganda unleashed through the 'Konkani Minorities' Institutions' Association' (headed by Dr. Kasturi Mohan Pai), ' 'Akhil Bharath Konkani Parishad'(led by Shri Basti Vaman Shenoy) and 'Konkani Bhasha prachar Sabha', Cochin (a one-man organization of Shri Purushotham Mallya); the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy wishes to make a detailed statement - for the benefit of the general public. The Academy also wishes to reiterate that, if this group does not succeed in their evil designs, then Konkani will be introduced as a third language option, from 6 th std. onwards, in schools in Karnataka, from the next curriculum itself. If they do, God forbid, Konkani is doomed. Kindly publish the following Press-Note. Thank you, Yours sincerely, Eric Ozario Tel: 0824-2419236 (Res) ___ PRESS NOTE (1) Konkanis live on the west coast of India, mainly in 4 states, namely - Maharastra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerela. Of these, the highest number of Konkanis live in Karnataka, around 25 lakhs, more than double the number living in Goa, and more than half of the entire Konkani population. (2) Konkani has no script of its own, and it is being written in 5 scripts - Kannada, Devnagari, Roman, Arabic and Malayalam. (3) The highest amount of literature is being produced and read in the Kannada lipi. Goa is divided between 2 lipis - Devnagari and Roman, while in Karnataka no literature, worth the mention, in other than the Kannada lipi, exists or is read. Also, the Kannada lipi literature has a rich heritage of more than 125 years in Karnataka, of good quality and considerable quantity. (4) It is not true to say that the Devnagari lipi is the 'natural' lipi for Konkani. Devnagari was not evolved for Konkani. How can a lipi used by so many languages, be the natural lipi of Konkani? (5) It is not true to say that the Kendra Sahitya Academy has recognized only the Devnagari lipi.It is not for the Akademi to recognize any lipi. It only recognizes languages. What is true is that, the Devnagari lobby which has usurped all places (reserved for Konkani)in the General Council, the Executive Board and the Advisory Board of the Akademi, has made it a practice to award Awards only to literature written in Devnagari lipi and now, this practice is being projected as the policy of the Akademi. May it be known that the Kannada and Roman lipi practitioners are preparing ground for a legal battle against this gross injustice. (6) When Konkani was included in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution, no mention of any lipi as its official lipi was made - and rightly so, because the Constitution of India recognizes the right of every lipi and boli to exist and be preserved. The Constitution of India in defining Cultural and Educational Rights, has ensured the liberty of choice of script: 29. Protection of interests of minorities. - (1) Any section of the citizens residing in the territory of India or any part thereof having a distinct language, script or culture of its own shall have the right to conserve the same. (7) We in the Konkani movement always believed in the concept of 'Unity in Diversity'. Unity of Konkanis can not be achieved by imposing any one lipi or boli on all others. Only by accepting regional/local pluralisms is unity possible. The attempt from any quarter to impose the Devnagari lipi on the Konkani people of Karnataka is not acceptable and deserves condemnation. (8) Teaching a child a language is not a technical or a politico/ideological issue, but a practical one. In the selection of the lipi, care must be taken to see that enough literature in the regional/local variety is available to the child in that particular lipi. If one accepts this norm, then in Karnataka it will be a crime to teach Konkani in schools in any lipi other than Kannada. (9) Children in Karnataka learn Kannada as the first or second language, at the primary level and therefore are well-versed with the Kannada lipi by the time the third language is taught. And as Hindi and Sanskrit are the other options, along with Konkani; to teach Konkani in Devnagari lipi, the child would have to be taught the lipi first and then the language. This is not only impractical but also a burden on the child. Hence Devnagari is ruled out on this single count. (10) A bogus argument that is making the rounds is that Kerela has accepted the Devnagari lipi and so should Karnataka. The truth is that Konkani literature, in any lipi, including Devnagari, is conspicuous by its absence in Kerela. The tragedy of the Konkani movement in Kerela is that - only fancy name boards remain, no organizations; only ageing leaders survive, no followers;only Konkanis exist, no Konkani. Karnataka does not, most certainly, wish to follow in Kerela's footsteps. (11) We suspect that the protagonists of Devnagari in Karnataka, have a hidden agenda and their only intention is to sabotage the
[Goanet]Nazi principle in Konkani Parishad
Sir, Kindly give publicity to the following press release. Dr. Pratap Naik, S.J. Director Thomas stephens Konknni Kendr [EMAIL PROTECTED] Condemnation of Parishad's dangerous objectives Mandd Sobhann wishes to register its unequivocal condemnation of the All India Konkani Parishad's declared objective, namely - 'One Language, One Script, One Samaj'. This slogan smacks of the fascist ideology. We in the Konkani movement always believed in and worked for 'unity in pluralism'- pluralism of caste, creed, religion, region, dialect, script etc.. Now if the logic of the Parishad's ideology is extended, it would read - 'one language, one script, one dialect, one religion, one samaj'. Globalisation also advocates and practices the same theory of 'one language, one culture, one world', bulldozing in the bargain, all other cultures and languages other than the one it promotes. As a result, the precious cultural beauty and variety of the world stands destroyed. In the 2 meetings the Parishad has already organised in the implementation of this dangerous ideology, it has laid bare its real motive, namely, of imposing the 'Devnagari' lipi on the people of Karnataka who read and write Konkani only in the 'Kannada' lipi and who have also opted for the Kannada lipi to teach their children Konkani in Karnataka schools. This high-handedness of the Parishad not only rides roughshod on the constitutional right of the Konkani of Karnataka, but also threatens to destroy the much valued unity of the Konkani people. Unity cannot be achieved by destroying local/regional pluralisms, be it of 'lipi' or 'boli' and enforcing one variety on all others. By accepting and respecting pluralism alone, unity is possible. The Parishad does not have a chance to succeed, simply because it does not have legal or moral authority, nor does it have jurisdiction and capacity. Impositions of all kinds, anywhere in the world, have always met with resistance, have been repulsed and defeated. The Parishad's ideology is dangerous. Its motives deplorable. Its actions condemnable. If the Parishad persists with this misadventure, all self-respecting Konkanis will be mobilised to befittingly reply. Mandd Sobhann implores Konkanis to - 'defend pluralism, preserve identity and through mutual respect build unity'. Rony Crasta (Secretary) Mandd Sobhann
[Goanet]TSKK Roman Orthography
THOMAS STEPHENS KONKNNI KENDR B.B. Borkar Road, Alto Porvorim, GOA 403521 * (0832) 2415857, 2415864 E-mail:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Website:www.tskk.org July 11, 2005 Sir, Kindly give publicity to the following press release. TSKK Roman Orthography The written tradition of Konkani begins only in the 16th Century. The credit for this goes to Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries. They used Roman script, and an orthography which was quite adequate to represent the Konkani of their times. Since then the Roman orthography for Konkani has undergone several changes. The currently used Roman orthography was introduced by Prof. Joaquim Antonio Fernandes in Mumbai. It cannot represent a few sounds proper to Konkani. Besides, it has certain basic limitations. Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr (TSKK) took the initiative to modify the Roman orthography to suit the requirements of e-mail and other computer applications. After discussing with various Konkani authors and others for over a year, finally TSKK has evolved an orthography for Konkani which is scientific, logical and at the same time user friendly. At present Konkani is mainly written in Kannada, Devanagari and Roman Scripts. Among these Kannada script has the highest number of periodicals, publishers, writers and readers. Yet, Kannada script is limited to Konkanis of Karnataka. Devanagari script has the least readership and it is limited to users in India. Besides, Konkani in Devanagari script has not yet become popular in Goa itself where it is the official language. The majority community in Goa still prefers to read, write and study Marathi and not Konkani! Ten local and national Marathi dailies are sold in Goa, which itself shows that this community favours Marathi. This proves that the majority of local people have not accepted or supported Konkani written in Devanagari script. Though Devanagari script is phonetic, the Devanagari Orthography used to write Konkani is unscientific, illogical, and at times idiotic to native speakers as well as non-Konkani speakers and learners. It has 32 major defects. All these years a section of Konkani writers had propagated the myth that Konkani cannot be adequately written in Roman script. Now TSKK has proved that this myth is far from the truth. Out of the 32 shortcomings of Devanagari orthography, TSKK Roman Orthography has eliminated 29. It makes use of a linear typing system without diacritics, making use of only the standard computer keyboard. At present TSKK Orthography is the closest to the pronunciation. One has to read what is written just like Sanskrit orthography. Therefore it is ideal and best suited to Konkani. TSKK hopes that within a decade its Roman Orthography will unite Konkanis of the world. This Herculean task will never be achieved by Kannada or Devanagari scripts. If written Konkani survives and blooms in the future, it will be mainly in Roman script. Maharashtra Konkani Association Mumbai in collaboration with TSKK conducted classes at 10 places in Mumbai from 24th June to 3rd July to popularize TSKK Roman Orthography. Classes were held at Vasai, Malad, Malwani, Andheri, Vidyavihar, Ghatkopar, Meera Road, Dombivili, Vakola and at Jari Mari. The participants who had never read Konkani in their life time, were able to read Konkani using TSKK Roman Orthography. TSKK with the active collaboration of Konkani Foundation, Vasai Road will begin to teach TSKK Roman Orthography to Konkanis through DIVO and KUTTAM Konkani weeklies of Mumbai. Both these weeklies are ready to devote one page for Konkani written using TSKK Roman orthography. On 15th August 2005, TSKK will release a booklet of TSKK Roman Orthography for Konkani. By the end of May 2006, TSKK will publish TSKK Konkani Basic course in Roman script using TSKK orthography. TSKK will also host an online Konkani course on its website. The book and the online course will help Konkanis including NRI Konkanis to learn Konkani without wasting their energy, time and money to learn a new script. TSKK will use the Bardeshi dialect of Konkani which is closer to Old Konkani and it is widely used by Catholics and Hindu Bahujan Society, who form the majority in Goa. Besides this, Bardeshi dialect is the most popular dialect in mass media, tiatrs, kantaram and films. Yours truly, Dr. Pratap Naik, S.J. Director
[Goanet]Roman script the soul of Konkani
ROMAN SCRIPT THE SOUL OF KONKANI Nelson Lopes R. Venkatraman, the former President of India, advocated the use of Roman script for all Indian languages. His noble vision was unity of script and National Integration. It would also facilitate the learning of Indian languages. Take the case of a person who wants to learn Tamil, but is unfamiliar with its script. It would be next to impossible for a non Tamilian to learn Tamil. First of all one has to master the script and then the language. A person who is familiar with the universally widely used Roman Script would learn Tamil or for that matter any Indian language if it is taught in Roman script. In this age of Internet and information technology, where the whole world has been reduced to a global village, the Roman script is gaining wide acceptability world-wide. It is a simple linear script and is computer and user friendly. Turkey, Swahili in Africa and the Indo-China region states have all resorted to the use of Roman script for their languages. The Chinese, Japanese, Punjabi, Sindhi and Kashmiri are using Roman script for e- mail correspondence. Therefore it becomes easier for any tourist visiting Malaysia or Vietnam, to read the sign boards and his destinations, though in the local languages but written in Roman Script. Take the case of India where there are hundreds of languages and dialects written in various scripts, wouldn't an Indian traveling from North to South find it easier to travel if all the sign boards were written in the Roman script? The Indian Army uses Hindi, written in the Roman script to instruct its recruits. As the army recruits come from diverse regions speaking different languages, can anybody dare to call the Indian Army or President R. Venkatraman, antinational or divisive? Have both the Indian Army and the former President deviated from the cultural mainstream of India? or become less patriotic? Is our nationalism dependent on the script we use for a particular language? Ever since the Dalgado Konknni Akademi was established to unite and motivate the sidelined Konkani writers, readers and speakers of books written in Roman script and enthusiasts, who sacrificed their life for the cause of Konkani, but denied any benefits. Loud noises are heard from self proclaimed defendants of Konkani, they accuse the efficient bearers of the DKA as divisive elements and antinational. They also label them as activists alienated from the cultural mainstream of India. By the way, where is the unity amongst the Konkani forces? Why are lakhs of rupees spent on Konkani by the Government used by only a few? A coterie of script fundamentalists whose only aim is to share the booty amongst themselves. Though the language bill was passed in the year 1987, Konkani as the official language remains only on paper. The bill has never been implemented and never will. Majority of government schools and private schools run by the majority community continue to promote Marathi and not Konkani. The Antruzi dialect Konkani that is foisted on the unwilling public has not found wide acceptability. Only a small percentage of Goans speak and use Antruzi Konkani dialect which is spoken by Saraswats, whereas the majority abhors the use of Antruzi as they feel it is not their language. The Antruzi Konkani can and will only survive with the government support. If the government financial support is withdrawn, the written Antruzi will die a natural death and it only will remain as a spoken dialect on lips of these small percentage of Goans. At present it is mainly kept alive by government grants. In Goa there is more readership and support for written Marathi than Konkani written in Devanagari script. The most of the religious rituals of the majority community are held in Marathi and not in Antruzi Konkani dialect. This itself proves that the majority community does not support or encourage Antruzi Konkani dialect in religious, cultural and educational fields. Take the case of Roman script Konkani, which uses the Bardesi dialect. Ninety eight percent of Goans understand this form of Konkani. Literature in this variant existed right from the sixteenth century. The Tiatrs that uses this Bardesi Konkani is highly successful and today its turn over is in multi crores. Hundreds of cassettes of Kantaram are released every year. VCD'S of Tiatrs are flooding the market by the hundreds and are bought by the people over the counter. Vavraddeancho Ixtt weekly and monthly magazines are sold by the thousands by paper vendors. Novels written in Roman script sell like hot cakes the moment they are released. Religious hymns, Bible readings, masses and other religious literature and church bulletins are in the Bardesi version Konkani. This shade of Konkani is sought to be suppressed and eliminated by the Devanagari fanatics. They have succeeded to a great extent in

Thanking You, Pratap Naik, S.J. Director, TSKK E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] DALGADO KONKNNI AKADEMI The name Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) was established in 1988. This Akademi is named after Mgr. Sebastião Dalgado, for his various contributions to enrich Konkani Language. Mgr. Sebastião Dalgado was a scholar of Konkani as well as many other languages. Dalgado was born in Assagão, a village in Bardez, Goa on May 8, 1855. Mgr. Dalgado devoted himself to the study of Konkani in scientific and systematic manner. He was the first person in Goa to use Devanagari script for Konkani and to print the first Konkani book in it. He compiled two dictionaries Konkani-Portuguese and Portuguese-Konkani; Konkani was then written as well as spoken in various dialects. Mgr. Dalgado found his own Bardexi dialect the most suitable to standardize Konkani. Mgr. Dalgado's aim was to show that Konkani was a full-fledged independent language. Mgr. Dalgado's contribution to the development of Konkani language is immense. He rightfully deserved a prominent place but in vain. In order to keep the name, the works and sacrifices of Mgr. Dalgado alive for the present and future generations, the Akademi was named after this great son of Goa. The first phase: For the first four years DKA was very active. Fr. Freddy J. da Costa was the President. Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo was the secretary and Mr. Prabhakar Tendulkar the treasurer. During this period, DKA published 'Konkani Orthography in Roman Script' with the intention of bringing about a desirable unity among the writers, so that the writers could understand the principles and rules of writing Konkani in Roman script. A number of programmes were conducted in various parts of Goa to popularise Roman script and Konkani written in it. Subsequently due to various reasons DKA slowed down and remained stand still. The second phase: It was observed that the writers of Konkani in Roman script were totally neglected as they were not getting any financial backing from any quarters to carry on their activities. In fact, after the passing of Goa Official Language Act, the Government and the institutions working for the cause of Konkani in Goa, supported Konkani in Devnagiri script only. Publications of books in Roman script suffered. Institution like Kala Akademi stopped giving awards for Konknani Books in Roman script. In order to support and to give boost to the creativity of Konkani writers in Roman script, some well wishers of Konkani in Roman script came together and decided to revive Dalgado Konknni Akademi. Presently Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo is the President, Mr. Jose Salvador Fernandes and Mr. Prabhakar Tendulkar are the secretary and treasurer respectively. Besides there are other 10 prominent persons as members of the Executive Board. Various sub-committees have been formed to popularise the activities of the Akademi. Literary Committee is headed by Fr. Peter Raposo, Editor of Vavraddeancho Ixtt, while Wilson Mazarello, popular stage artiste, is the chairman of Cultural Committee. Dr. Olivinho Gomes, former Head of Konkani Department of Goa University, is the Chairman of the Committee to frame the Constitution of the Akademi, while Dr.Pratap Naik, Director of Thomas Sthepens Konknni Kendr will head the Awards Committee. The present membership of the Akademi is over 200. Aims and Objectives: The present Executive Board has set a few aims and objectives and activities to strengthen Konkani in Roman script. The first and foremost objective of DKA is to promote Konkani language in Roman script, which is neglected, side tracked and given step motherly treatment. Konkani written in Roman script goes back to 1560. Without its Roman script history, Konkani would not have got the recognition by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi in 1975. It has the rich cultural heritage and it has become integral and unavoidable part of Goan culture, specifically of Christians. The vast majority of Goan Christians read Konkani written in Roman script. Hence it has to be preserved fostered and developed. DKA will make all efforts to provide support, financial and otherwise, for writers of Konkani in Roman script. It will work untiringly to obtain for them their just and lawful demands, dues and rights. DKA will recognize those institutions, which are working for the promotion and development of Konkani Language, literature and culture in Roman script. It will initiate various activities in literary, cultural and social
