The latter assertion is equally true of inhumane capitalist idiots
as well. Often times, stupidity is best recognized in the rear view
mirror. All ideologies based more on faith than evidence are notorious
for underestimating their stupidity. Smart investors often are half an
economic cycle away from being idiots.

Marlon,

few newspapers will publish letters to the editor
without identification of the author. so much for
anonymous posting.

the word 'bum' refers to a lazy person. inappropriate
here, but not synonymous with harlot. within the
context of some people wanting to help rehabilitate
prostitutes. IMO, only people who *seek* help should
be helped. certainly, tax payer money should not be
spent on bums.

commercialization of sex:
singapore has it, yes, but a hundred other nations
don't. besides as in your alcohol prohibition example
of the US of the 20's, what absolute worth can we
assign to singapore's example ?

the greatest flaw in the arguments is that they have
no foundation in fundamental principles.

commercial sex will possibly make marriages redundant.
A marriage is a long term commitment to a woman. it
being very expensive to support children, specially on
the emotional, physical fronts. this cost can be seen
with single parents. strenthening commercial sex will
destabilize society. I would prefer to be very
conservative on such a front. after all it has taken
thousands of years to evolve. never underestimate
human stupidity. well meaning socialist idiots ground
the indian economy to dust before they gave up in
1992. those who exude the virtues of humaness may not
understand the unexpected sideeffects of their ideas.

  if

Agnelo,

It is very likely that Bernado is not using his/her
real name. I can fully understand why this person who
supports legalizing prostitution will not want to
reveal her identity.

Unfortunately, many (most?) goans ascribe a moral
judgement to the profession of prostitution. For
example in your post below, you equated prostitutes to
bums. Hence people and specially women, who defend the
free choice made my prostitutes may also be
stigmatised by society. We all know how fast gossip
spreads in Goa.

We have already had a long drawn out discussion on
this issue before, but I fully support the views of
the poster. Barring solving the underlying economic
and social factors that result in prostitution,
legalizing prostitution is one of the better metions
to ensure that the women (and men) who engage in this
practice get the best protection and maximum economic
rewards for their difficult job.

I have seen the benefits of legalized prostitution in
Singapore. The system is extremely organized and the
workers are well taken care of. Financial and legal
transparency has ensured that there is no criminal
element to this profession, not unlike what happened
after the production of alcohol was legalized in the
1920s in the US.

If people are so eager to ban professions, I suggest
they first start on enforcing pre-existing bans on
things like child labor or indentured labor.

it is just as 'humane' to shut down prostitution or to
manage it with a reward and punishment policy. both
the demand and supply ends need to be controlled.

I think, in this case, Ms Periera is more worried
 about straying
husband/sons/brothers and seems to have forgotten
 some very basic
principles - not just of Christianity but of simple
 humanity.

christian socialism like communism is innately stupid.

The worry of straying husband/sons/brothers is
reality, responses hard wired into the brain of a
woman necessary for her own success. to despise this
behavior is suicidal. moral principles are a fashion
of the times, they change with time.

we should seek answers in science, in biology, in
human behavior. not the bible, nor fashionable dogma.
