I cannot nurture it any more than my mother hoped to nurture music in me. Vasco, (my dear piano teacher) if you're reading this, I forgive you for running away without even getting paid. My dad still has the Dh200, he owes you :)) However, one can nurture and cultivate a desire to be well-read, well-spoken and interested in the issues of the day. This is amenable to nurture. I too am trying to experiment with my daughter. I've already written her acceptance speech for the Booker's prize. So far she is showing great promise. She's learnt the one word that she can punctuate every sentence with later on in life, caca. I hear the origin of caca is the latin word cacare, of the same meaning. I take this as an assuring sign that she also has an aptitude for languages :)) I think the problem parents have, trying to encourage children to pursue writing, is that they perceive so few people can actually make a living out of it. This perception is incorrect. Writing can lead one into a variety of careers from advertising to television to publishing to training. Years ago I told my parents I wanted to be either a journalist or a cabaret dancer. They said both careers would expose far too much. As a result of which both my pursuits have remained strictly amateur, only to be performed from the sanctuary of my bedroom. :) Elisabeth -- --- Frederick \FN\ Noronha [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Gabe, I sincerely believe writing talent (read: confidence in one's abilities) is created. Dear Dr Colaco and Dr Helekar, Although both of you offer interesting points of view, I tend to have a third perspective. Evil, as we traditionally define it, cannot exist if one is either an agnostic or atheist. The concept of evil, is a corollary to the concept of God, hence evil emanates from the devil and goodness from God. To me all evil is just mental dysfunction. It is the belief that one is right and it is dysfunction because at the extreme end of the spectrum it makes the person incompatible with society. In between there are various degrees of this dysfunction. Hence a person can be god-fearing as in Andrea Yates (who feared God so much she drowned 5 of her kids) and evil at the same time, by the traditional definition of what is evil. In another time and century she would have been burnt at the stake for being a witch perhaps. Mercifully our understanding of mental disorders, post-partum depressing and other dysfunction today enables us to appropriately classify this evil. As we learn more about the mysteries of the mind, in time we will be able to identify more accurately, all forms of evil. Dear Jose, My inbox went down over the Viva Goa photos, almost 1,500 hits daily, the e-mail response was staggering. I must quickly weave together the disparate strands uniting Rene, Goa Day the Devanagiri script. Certainly you may be right wrt the re-engineered Konkani Romi script. That does not make wrong my displeasure with the underhand slipping in of the much-detested Devanagiri script into Goan life. It might be tolerated and even now accepted alongside the Romi script, but must never again be allowed to enslave us. For the record I'm not a 'mogi', nor fluent in Devanagiri konkani, just the Devanagiri script. Rene is the face of Goa Day, whose antecedents remain unclear. Despite spirited defenses, there is a difference. Credit must always be acknowledged, lest a maverick take advantage of the vacuum. A co-ordinator and a genuine founder are quite different. Like Solomon's judgement, a genuine founder would have understood the call to arms. Goa Day is a creation, an ephemeral child, of the diaspora. How many Goans in Goa take even a moment's notice of it, let alone celebrate it ? Therein lies your problem - the long simmering resentment of native Goans with the diaspora, and their glib, flighty, fanciful ways. When irate Goans march for their script in the flooded, steamy streets of Goa, the diaspora Goans are celebrating WGD with song and dance, toasting their personal success year after year, tossing off jarring phrases boonies, freeway, summering, turnpike, blah, blah, blah... is it any wonder brilliant writers like Elisabeth end up being mauled by the likes of Cecil Pinto and Sunith V? The diaspora could do heaps for those who fight on back home. Like support the script battle. And if you think it is possible to ignore those of our less fortunate brethren, then may I quote Walter Pitkin in reminding you that we must remain the enemy of the good - because to love the best is to see the whole Goan world in a fresh and startling light. As with the origins of WGD, that being possible to hate half-knowledge, half-hearted ideals, half-skills, sussegado, complacency, sets fire to something inside you. Like many, our Goan world perishes under the misleading of stupid people who disbelieve in perfection. Pitkin again. Calling themselves realists, they are actually victims of the vulgar myth of man's supreme, invincible incompetence. Rank leaders rise up with the day, saving Goa from the govt., the Raj, the ghanttiis, even Goans themselves. Deeming people to be much worse than they are, these so-called leaders become compromisers, shirkers, or false liberals who spout words and choke on deeds. True leaders will unite the diaspora and the native. And never allow ourselves to be sold short, of our cuture or destiny. Verily the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Always, FR. . Dear FR, wrt Rene: Like you too have said, he is a good guy. He does the best he is able to, and I commend him for that. Let's assist him if we can. wrt the Goa Day origins: I am sure the credit lies with the Kuwait Goans who started this event in the early 1990s. I also credit Prof George Pinto (and a fine Goan lady whose name escapes me at this moment) with the date etc of the present GoaDay. However, whoever the parents of the idea, and we should surely acknowledge them, it is Rene Baretto who has played the role of the active 'Father' of Goa Day, and Basilio Magno as the 'Godfather'. wrt Devanagri: Is it possible that we are somehow mixing up Devanagri (the script) with English (the language)? I personally believe that Devanagri is better suited to correctly give letter-form to the spoken form of Konkani. However, as Jorge de Abreu Noronha wrote in some time ago, that difficulty can be overcome in the Romscript, quite easily and without the headache of the reEngineered Romi Konkani script. If Konkani is to grow in more avenues than just the Tiatrs, the movers and shakers must think again. One method is to accept that alienation NEVER... ULO is the only present Konkani publication which has a chance of succeedingwhile Sunaparant and Gulab have every opportunity to post a... The following what I wrote in todays Arab Times, I am reproducing it for the reading pleasure and information of the netters. Some of the Goanetters may find it interesting. AVF. Going down the memory lane, I can still remember very well what has happened on 4th day of the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. On 5th August, Sunday, Saddam Hussein gave an open call to the ordinary Kuwaiti people to come forward and take over the reins of Kuwait in their hands discarding the legitimate rulers of the country. Admiringly and of course surprisingly none of the Kuwaitis - big and small, elite and commoner - came forward to occupy the rulers seat. In one word all the Kuwaitis rejected the offer given to them by the conqueror Saddam Hussein. By rejecting this offer, the Kuwaitis have shown their total allegiance and support to the ruling family headed by Baba Jaber in whom every Kuwaiti reposed his total confidence. This is something rare nowadays to happen in any other country especially in the Third World and Black World where people and tin pot leaders are lustfully waiting eagerly to occupy the highest throne by hook or crook. See the defections in India and coups in Pakistan, Bangladesh and some African countries. My admiration goes to the Kuwaitis to show their firm support to their leadership even during the time of crisis. Not only this, on the very first day of the invasion when the ordinary Kuwaiti Taxi drivers - Red Colour Taxis - when they got the news of the invasion of their country, stopped plying their taxis thereby giving total non-cooperation to the invaders. Not only this, during the later part of the invasion month when Banking sector resumed work, with the exception expatriates none of the Kuwaitis resumed their duties thereby showing further non-cooperation to the invaders. The non-cooperation given by the Kuwaitis to the invaders including the establishment of Resistance Force by the Kuwaitis was the sign of total allegiance to the Ruling Family, to the legitimate leadership of Kuwait under the stewardship of the late Amir H. H. Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah - May His Soul Rest In Peace. As a matter of interest and information about the confidence Kuwaiti people had in late Amir of Kuwait, I narrate one small but touching incident. One maid from my place in Goa was working for a Kuwaiti family. After 3 months of invasion, as all others, she too volunteered to return to Goa. While leaving she wanted her salary which was outstanding. But unfortunately for her, her employers were not in position to pay the same because they were short of cash due to prevailing situation. Hence, her Kuwaiti Madam told her - Mary, you go now to your country but I have no money to pay you because you know how bad our situation is. But, Mary, you dont worry for your salary, once our country is liberated I will surely send your salary to Goa by a Bank Draft. When Mary asked her Madam whether it is possible for the liberation of Kuwait, the confident Kuwaiti Madam replied thus: of course! Kuwait will be liberated and we have full confidence in Baba Jaber that he will work hard for it. This is the confidence of the Kuwaiti people in the ruling family and the leadership of Kuwait. Such confidence in their leaderships is not easily seen elsewhere nor such allegiance to their leaderships is easily noticed elsewhere. This is the uniqueness of Kuwaiti society and if it was not for the invasion of Kuwait I would never notice these great attributes of Kuwaiti citizens, ordinary and elite. A. Now, some may face investigation for a possible breach of the property laws - and the threat of losing their home. Peter Foster reports Sitting in his modest, lagoon-side house in the Indian holiday state of Goa, Rajan Ghate is plotting a revolution. With his laptop and new tele-fax machine installed in a small room, he has equipped himself for a fight that could have serious ramifications for British people wanting to buy property along Goa's palm-fringed coastline. Goa 'It is estimated that about 5,000 foreigners, including as many as 3,000 Britons, have properties in Goa' Mr Ghate is a young politician from the state's ruling Nationalist Congress Party. Among the paperwork on his desk is a leaflet distributed to all his party members. The British came to India as traders and ultimately ended up as the rulers, it declares. They purchased immoveable properties in India and we were compelled to expel them out of India. The hostile tone is clear. More than 40 years after the first western hippies discovered Goa, a small but vociferous group of Goan nationalists are saying it is time to put a stop to the latest foreign invasion. It is estimated that about 5,000 foreigners, including as many as 3,000 Britons, have properties in Goa, drawn there by the climate, easy-going atmosphere and low cost of living. Many are British pensioners attracted by the chance to buy a new-build, two-bedroom apartment in the sun for as little as £25,000. As Acron, one of the state's largest developers, says on its website: A couple can live in Goa, comfortably, on less than £500 a month, including expenses on food, utilities, car and chauffeur, entertainment, council taxes etc. Medical facilities are also affordable and first-rate. However, some Goans say they now feel overrun by the foreigners who, they claim, are driving up property prices and destroying the old, simple face of Goa. I am appealing to all Goan people and political parties not to sell land to foreigners in order to preserve our culture and identity, says Mr Ghate. His anti-foreigner campaign might almost be written off as comical were it not for the fact that it has struck a chord with some of the state's leading politicians. Last month Goa's chief minister, Pratapsing Rane, ordered a retrospective investigation into 445 property deals to see whether they had breached India's strict laws on foreigners buying property. Under the Foreign Exchange Mangement Act (FEMA) of 1999, non-nationals can buy property here so long as they are resident in the country for 182 days in the financial year before they buy. Traditionally - and particularly in Goa - the Act has been interpreted liberally, with some estate agents admitting privately that bending the rules was widespread as they sought to cash in on the state's property boom. There are unscrupulous builders and agents dishing out flyers to foreigners getting off their charter flights, said one agent. Even taxi drivers are in the property business. They tell people they can just put down a deposit and they will fix the paperwork - which often means doing a deal under the table with the registrar's office. However, the screws are rapidly tightening. All sale-deed registrations must now go through Goa's Home Department and be scrutinised by the police machinery to ensure they conform with FEMA. Until recently, prospective buyers could claim residency merely by swearing an affidavit - a practice which activists like Mr Ghate say has been widely abused. More worryingly for past buyers, the state government has said that it has clinching evidence that foreigners have broken the law. Mr Rane promised a local newspaper that any property found to have been bought illegally would vest in the custody of the government - that is, be confiscated. Understandably, such bellicose rhetoric has got many of Goa's foreign homeowners, developers and estate agents worried. The chief point of contention is whether foreigners looking to buy property can fulfil their 182-day residency qualification period while on a tourist visa, which has been common practice over the past seven years. The state government has now said that visitors on a

First of all, the Indian Rupee is ever unlikely to get dearer (over long term), against most major western currencies. The logic being: the Indian government works overtime, to ensure the deliberate weakness of its currency. Therefore, if you just hang on to your Pounds, Euros or Dollars, you'd more likely come out a winner over long term basis - roughly, a ten year period. If the British and Indian economies keep cranking at their respective current pace and if you factor in, the expected Indian government's intervention to keep its currency value lower, you could almost guarantee yourself that your Pound would fetch 100 Rupees or more, for every Pound you sell in about 5 years. This brings me to the other side of the story: I have been drawing a quite chuckle, every time I read foreigner's are buying land and other immovable assets in Goa. In my opinion, these guys have no idea what they are getting into! The expected gain in the value of their assets, would almost get wiped out, by the devaluation of the Rupee. Moreover, its risky to purchase land/apartments in Goa, specially, if they get caught up in legal hassles with the locals. Goan courts are notoriously slow in dispensing off cases, should you get entangled in one. To drive my point home, let me explain this scenario with a personal experience: I purchased an apartment in Candolim in the mid-nineties. For arguments sake, lets says I paid 1 million (10 lakh) Rupees. I exchanged my dollars at that time, for something like 32 Rupees to a USD - or a total value of $31,250. Now fast forward to the year 2006 and compare the outcome: The apartment is now valued at 1.5 million (15 lakhs) Rupees. If I sell it and convert the amount back to US Dollars - what do I get back? A lousy $32,600 (at 46 Rupees to a Dollar). And this does not include other costs such as brokerage fees, stamp duty, capital gains tax (if any), currency conversion costs and all the other hassles, one has to go through. Also, note that the US Dollar, is amongst the currencies that grew the least in value, versus the Indian Rupees over that time. Thank god, the Rupee is only at 46 at the moment; had the Rupee gone down to 55 against the USD, I would have gotten clobbered. If I invested $30,000 ten years ago, into some stupid fund, I'd have doubled my money by now. Considering I work on Wall Street and would admit, I am reasonably good at investing on my own (instead of plowing the money in the funds), I could have made much more! So now, do the defensive Goans, see my point ? Let the foreigner's buy as much properties as they want. They aren't going to make much - actually, they would take on more risk and almost always loose. A smart Britisher would be better off, investing his money at the London Stock Exchange. The protestors held a two hour action armed with placards with slogans highlighting the specific issue of the road widening that has been neglected by the Public Works Department (PWD) for over ten years. Although the land acquisition process had been initiated many years ago the PWD has been dragging its feet for the last three years when they have to compensate the land owners and widen the road. Tembi-Camorlim has become a death trap with hundreds of heavy vehicles which come from the NH 4A in Ponda via Borim go through the village at break neck speed and as the road has not been widened are unable to negotiate the sharp turns and therefore crash into peoples homes. As per the plans of the Goa Govt. the road was to be widened from Raia to Borim via Ambora and Camorlim villages, however there has been no action forthcoming from the PWD. To add insult to injury the PWD had recently hotmixed a stretch of the road near the Ambora bus stop which has become very slippery due to some fault in the materials used in the hotmixing process. This has resulted in over one hundred accidents in the last month after the start of the monsoons, with one accident causing a lot of damage to the Ambora bus shelter. The Ambora youth who participated in today's protest action stated that their Club has made representations to the Village Panchayat of Camorlim with regards to the slippery road and the damaged bus shelter with copies to the Loutolim MLA Mr. Alexio Sequeira, Police Inspector Maina Curtorim Police Station, Assistant Engineer Roads PWD, Fatorda, Assistant Director of Transport and Deputy Collector SDM Mr. Suresh Pilarnekar. Speaking at the protest action Raia Civic and Consumer Forum secretary Mr.Raymond Rocha stated that the inaction of the PWD is highly deplorable especially when the accidents at Tembi involve tankers carrying hazardous substances and pose a danger to the lives of people. He further stated that the Forum will approach the District Administration to deal with the matter. Well expressed indeed - and Thank You once again for your courtesy. I add here that this thing called Kokni, masquareding as our mother tongue Konkani, is an engineered and IMPOSED IMPOSTER. The Goa Church with its weak-kneed hierarchy has fallen for it, and courtesy the IMPOSITION some among us have fallen for it, too. We may wish to ask ourselves, IF THAT IMPOSTER is really our mother tongue, How come our mothers cannot follow it ? As one (what I call PaperGoan) -i.e. person who is born in Goa - who calls himself Goan when it is convenient - but also calls himself as anything but Goan when it suits him said to me : In fifty years the mothers of that time will have forgotten the Konkani you talk about. That is probably the idea. The neo-Hindiwallas did that to Hindi-Urdu, the neo-Kokniwallas are doing it to Konkani. I am also advised by some of the purists ...that Variation in the various dialects of Konkani (Sashti, Bardezi etc) is similar to the variation of the various dialects of English (Welsh, Scottish, Irish etc). Yet, the purists say ...there is Standard English. That (I am further reminded) is the goal of the Kokniwallas i.e. To have a standard form of Konkani. These alleged purists need to be advised of two points wrt English: 1. The Welsh, Irish, Scottish mothers understand Standard English, Our Konkani mothers do not comprehend this travesty called Kokni. 2. Standard English was NEVER engineered. 3. English has enriched itself by including all words which have influenced it. This process continues even till this day. Our Kokniwallas have set themselves on decapitating words from Konkani and imposed words from Jhumritallaya ...to borrow a name of a place (;-). Please pick up a copy of Gulab in the Romi script or a copy of Sunaparant. Please pay for it. Please tell me IF you will PURCHASE another copy. As I said before All Power and Glory to those who slave in the hopes that Gulab and Sunaparant will be read - forget about understood (without a dictionary) and PAID for! ULO is so far (from the edition I have read) making some effort to be in the centre. I hope ULO succeedsThough, it is my personal belief that this IMPOSITION will drive most 'capable of financially and literally supporting' Goans towards English. I certainly will NOT support any Imposter language which masquarades as my mother tongue - however well it is engineered, and whichever script it is written in. If I want to read good Devanagri literature, I will purchase a Marathi publication. I will definitely not support a Kokni which sounds like a 3rd rate Nasal dialect of Marathieven if it is written in Romi or reenginered Romi Script. The more I think about it the more I agree with Godfrey Gonsalves and Floriano Lobo. Perhaps what Santosh is trying to say is that many if not most of the so called God fearing individuals are what as Jesus would refer to as being today's Pharasies. Since one is free to widely interpret and practise one's religion (like Mario's Cafeteria Catholism which allows him the freedom to believe that the Vatican was allied with Islamic terrorists!!), the defintion of what can be construed as a sin is itself open to debate. To some, thou shall not kill is a pretty definative statement. To many so called God fearing individuals killing is acceptable under a wide swath of options ranging from the Nazi genocide of the Jews to saving the life of stem cells at the expense of the lives of fully functional human beings. The same could also be said about non god fearing individuals. Being religious or not religious is not a sufficient criteria for being moral. If we could agree on a broad definition of morality and place people within this bell curve of morality, I suspect both the religious and non religious people would have their morality curves overlap each other - basically no difference. BY HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, AUG 4 — In what may be deemed as a major boost to the State’s tourism sector, the Union Civil Aviation Ministry is slated to lift the restrictions imposed on the duration of stay by charter arrivals in Goa. In other words, Charter arrivals whether Goan or foreign tourists will be allowed to stay beyond four weeks which is presently the stipulated duration. This was announced by tourism minister and the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Wilfred de Souza at a press conference on Friday noon at the Secretariat, Porvorim. Dr Willy who was in Delhi earlier this week met Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and discussed a host of tourism and civil aviation matters concerning Goa. Dr de Souza told the media today that he had received a request from Goans travelling on Charters for a relaxation in the stipulated duration of stay. After discussing this at the centre, Dr Willy said that the union civil aviation ministry has agreed to lift the restrictions for all. “They can now stay in Goa as long as they want,” he said. He further disclosed that the civil aviation ministry has agreed to allow foreign (scheduled) airlines to come directly to Goa. “This will bring in the high end tourists to Goa”, he said, adding the hotel industry will also benefit from both the mentioned decisions. Similarly, Air India will also be granted permission to introduce more flights per week on the Kuwait-Dubai-Mumbai-Goa sector as soon as its new fleet of aircrafts arrive. Speaking on the Dabolim airport expansion plans Dr Willy said that the stage was set for the transfer of land from the Goa government to the Airport Authority of India. This is likely to be executed before August 15. Similarly, work was also in progress for the transfer of nine acres of land from the Navy to the AAI. This, he said, will enable the authorities to kick-start works for expansion and upgrading the airport at Dabolim. In the meantime, Dr Willy pointed out that the Dabolim airport would be made operational 24 hours from the ensuing tourism season. “Except for a small period in the morning for Naval exercises the airport will be operational 24 hours,” he said. “While the Navy has enough staff to keep open the control towers 24 hours, the AAI has also offered to provide people to man the tower”, he said. He disclosed that the AAI and the Navy had entered into an agreement in this connection. In what also seems to be very interesting, the civil aviation ministry has granted permission for commencement of a helicopter service in Goa. 000 ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

Mario responds: Cornel, I hate to burst your bubble, but you do not have the luxury of controlling the dialog in a public forum like Goanet. There is no doubt that you did not want to hear my trenchant comments, because they exposed the very heart of your intentions. The REAL absurdity lies in the fact that AFTER A. Veronica Fernandes had described the situations in Kuwait and Goa, you come along with your typical propaganda on behalf of the Iraqi Baathists with the ridiculous assertion, ...the evidence of brutality and rape in Kuwait was subsequently deemed to be untrue, especially about the removal of vital equipment in a hospital where babies were being treated. I have also heard this from a Kuwaiti colleague, permanently resident in Kuwait, and who was present throughout the brief occupation. Here are your comments that are BEYOND ABSURD: a) The rape was deemed to be untrue because of some uncertainty that some hospital equipment was removed or not, and/or because of one of the many fictitious friends that you cite to support your propaganda? Reminds me of your Palestinians friends who said they had no animosity towards the Jews in Israel. b) The occupation of Kuwait was brief!!! Why do you think it was brief, Cornel??? Did Saddam suddenly have a change of heart??? What hard evidence will satisfy you, huh? DNA samples from the women? As we all know eye witness accounts are unreliable. And what difference does hard evidence make to someone so deterimined as you to defend the atrocities and intentions of the Islamo-fascists? The liberation of Iraq was legally authorized by UN 1441, which was passed unanimously by the UNSC, and in the US by the Iraq Liberation Act signed by Bill Clinton in 1998, and the Joint House-Senate authorization of October 2002. Most of the 30,000 innocent Iraqis have been killed by the Al Qaeda terrorists trying to foment sectarian violence in Iraq and in the sectarian violence itself. This compares with the 300,000 innocent Iraqis found in mass graves courtesy of Saddam Hussain and the thousands of Kurds and Shia that were killed by his chemical WMD's to the point that the UN had to impose no fly zones in the morth and the south to protect them from aerial attack. It is not so much as to who conceived the idea for the Goa Day, but more so who nurtured, tendered and propagated it to the ends of the globe. It is interesting people have personal views without access to facts first-hand. As I have mentioned several times, Rene worked tirelessly for WGD, organizing WGD. Why do you think he won a Goa Sudharop award for WGD? He was not ALONE in the first three years while WGD got off the ground, but the public face. Goa Sudharop simply did not conceive the idea, but played a founding role. See excerpts from Rene himself below. All the international phone calls to various Goans groups, articles written in Rene's name, 500+ emails to various groups including the early promotion to get WGD going, including drafting Rene's emails to various forums and groups, motivating Rene to continue when he was ready to give up because of the lack of response from various Goans, setting up the website, setting up the Yahoo Group, etc. etc. Sure does not seem like just conceived the idea to me. All the early heavy lifting was done by Goa Sudharop and Rene with Goa Sudharop staying behind Rene and in the background. It is not in my nature to claim any credit, but sometimes the truth has to be told to offset people's personal views. Rene acknowledged that in an email in Goan cyberspace in Nov 2003, excerpts below. I think Francis Rodrigues understands the difference (correctly) between Founder and Organizer. Excerpts from an email in Goan cyberspace from Rene in Nov 2003. Please read GOA SUDHAROP for George Pinto, I do not want any personal credit, and GOA SUDHAROP provided the resources. The occasion [WGD] has drawn many Goans TOGETHER and this has been made possible with the support from many, but uppermost among them was Goa Sudharop. Others who helped to make this occasion a success were the Coordinators of WGD, a network of individual Goans and Goan organizations globally. The very first ever WORLD GOA DAY was celebrated on the 20th of August 2000 and was well supported by Gaspar Almeida and Ully Menezes www.Goa-World.com organisation along with a few other Goan Forums / organisations. In the years that followed , we seemed to have lost that support, But George Pinto, who is also the President of Goa Sudharop, came to our aid and gave us his personal and organizational support too, they has done so ever since. When WE were frustrated for want of responses and support George was there, encouraging us. He helped us by his postings on the various Goan e-groups. The articles George helped publish in the Houston Goan Convention program (in 2002) and Los Angeles this year (2003), made this event well known through out the GOAN WORLD. Goa Sudharop and George gave us the opportunity of launching our World Goa Day website (sponsored by Goa Sudharop and designed by Mario Alvares) in Goa earlier this year, that too gave us the opportunity of making the idea of World Goa Day known to Goans in Goa ! It's not just the support, its George's participation in the WORLD Goan events (Goa - Houston, L A, UK, S.F etc ., etc.) that has made that difference to us. We believe that TIME is an important factor in today's world, not just MONEY. George's efforts have been ably supported by Filomena Giese. Our thanks also go to Viviana Coelho of Goanet admin., Ariosto Jose Coelho and Mario Mascarenhas from Goa Sudharop for their support. End of excerpts. However, the larger point I am trying to make is that the Goan community has devalued WGD to a picnic, song, dance affair and refuses to do anything substantial. I am not referring to giving money, in fact I recently suggested support for Romi Konknai and Abbe Faria as two issues that could have been supported by Goan expats but were not. Fred has posted some ideas for WGD, and there is no shortage of ideas of what can be done. The real issue he and others have raised, are Goans going to do anything? As in ACTION. Or do they never want to be interrupted waltzing and jiving on the dance floor? Regards, George ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

Evil, as we traditionally define it, cannot exist if one is either an agnostic or atheist. The concept of evil, is a corollary to the concept of God, hence evil emanates from the devil and goodness from God. Mario observes: Don't you just LOVE this wand-waving brand of atheism or agnosticism? Doesn't it prove what I have been saying on this forum, that there are no reliable standards when it comes to the moral codes of unorganized individual atheists and agnostics? This is the most comical version of evil I have heard in a long time. The communist totalitarian dictators must be smiling in their vinegar. Actually, evil has little or nothing to do with the concept of God. The concept of God simply highlights the difference between good and evil. The concept of right and wrong is not restricted to religious people. It should be instinctive to every civilized adult, but it apparently is not in the version under discussion in this post. The dictionary definition of evil includes: a) morally reprehensible [Elisabeth essentially says that atheists and agnostics cannot be morally reprehensible, because morality comes from a belief in God. In other words, We atheists and agnostics reject the notion of God and therefore the notion of goodness, so you can't call anything we do evil, because we never agreed to be good in the first place.] b) arising from actual or imputed bad character or conduct [The concept of bad also derives from God, which means that atheists and agnostics cannot be bad, according to Elisabeth, because they never agreed to be good in the first place.] c) causing discomfort or repulsion {Even the most die-hard atheist/agnostic MUST understand what THIS means.] d) causing harm [I wonder if the concept of harm also derives from God, which means that atheists and agnostics cannot cause harm. Nah! Even atheists and agnostics must understand harm. Right? But who knows any more?] Elisabeth writes: To me all evil is just mental dysfunction. Mario observes: This will come as a shock to mental health professionals. Is Elisabeth now practicing medicine without a license? The consequence is that all prisons around the world must now be turned into mental health facilities. Elisabeth writes: Hence a person can be god-fearing as in Andrea Yates (who feared God so much she drowned 5 of her kids) and evil at the same time, by the traditional definition of what is evil. Mario observes: Andrea Yates was diagnosed as medically insane, which makes any assertion that she was God-fearing equally absurd. One must be sane to understand the connection between being God-fearing and eschewing evil. Elisabeth writes: As we learn more about the mysteries of the mind, in time we will be able to identify more accurately, all forms of evil. Mario adds: The Crusaders, the Inquisition types, the Irish nuts, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot, Kim Jung Il, Fidel Castro, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Osama Bin Laden and the Islamo-fascists, Hitler, Mussolini, the pedophile priests and all Mafioso and drug dealers everywhere are all breathing a sigh of relief for suddenly finding themselves off the hook in Planet Elisabeth because they are all simply dysfunctional. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

You really would have to be an idiot, if you were a foreign national(of non-Goan descent) buying property in Goa for purely investment purposes in the long term. However if you look at it in terms of a lifestyle investment, it starts to make sense. Where else in the world could you have wonderful weather, beaches, locals who will bend over backwards for you, chauffer driven transport, fine dining, etc. all for less than the monthly rent for a single room in a student residence in London?? While shrewd politicians like Rajan Ghate and Pratapsinh Rane are now using this issue to bolster their 'swadeshi' credentials it must be remembered that the whole issue started because of an RBI notice to the Goa government regarding the disproportionate number of Private Limited Companies(bogus ones!) that were being setup in Goa every year and that these companies were violating existing foreign exchange regulations in their purchase of immovable assets. This fundamental issue has suddenly been sidelined, and the focus has now shifted to colonialism and rising property prices. It is a joke to blame foreign nationals for the rising property prices in Goa. Any person who has bought property in Panjim will testify to the astronomical rise in property prices in the last ten years, and foreigners have not played any part in this. If foreign nationals weren't buying properties in the beach belts, wealthy Indians would be and prices would be the same as they are today. Self righteous goans and crafty politicians have conveniently ignored the fact that the developers and real estate agents are the ones bending the rules and raking in illegal foreign exchange. They are all Goans and not foreign nationals or ghantis or bhaile. If anyone should be punished it is them. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the government is suddenly interested in confiscating these properties for the sole motive of auctioning them off to their cronies at throw away prices. We are not a Banana Republic did someone say?!? Does any Goanetter know the name of the very high ranking RBI official who sent this notice. She is of Goan descent(Lorraine D'Souza???). I remember reading about the notice in the Times of India some time before Rane raked up this issue in the assembly. Is it not, whether forgiveness come from you, others or God is completely another matter? The need to forgive self and others comes only when one opens a negative account. The billion dollar question is: Are human beings NOT capable to STOP on time opening these negative accounts in the first place? Can anyone share his/her experience (NOT views) on this matter? Goanetters, I think Santosh is making a very valid point that God-fearing people can, and do engage in horrendous evil. Osama bin Ladan is a perfect example, killing for his warped view of the love of his God-fearing maker, and the 'sacred' land of Saudi Arabia where Mohamed the prophet was born and lived. And so are the suicide bombers, wanting to get to heaven in double-quick time to meet the God they so fear and also love! So also were the Crusaders in earlier times. Other examples are the Ku Klax Klan, some among the Boers in apartheid South Africa and even Hitler. The first two definitely drew highly selectively from the Bible to support their warped arguments about their right to demonise and eliminate 'lower' groups. Hitler in turn, drew his bizarre inspiration from his God-fearing sense of Christ's unfinished business of eliminating the Jews. These guys were thoroughly mistaken but they were most certainly frighteningly God fearing! There is no oxymoron in this assertion at all. The oxymoron suggested by JC reminds me of a good friend of mine who when hearing that someone was divorcing a women whom he had loved desperately before, claimed that the bloke had not really ever loved her in the first place. Fortunately life's experience has helped my friend to change his mind about his daft previous oxymoron. In some respect this is also like the Catholic Church rejecting the concept of divorce but happy to be instrumental about (sometimes after years of marriage, children etc) the mind-boggling concept of annulment, especially assured to the rich, famous and powerful. This misconception can be easily refuted by giving several present-day examples of god-fearing people who are evil, or have committed evil acts. My dear Santoshbab, I submit to you that the term An Evil God Fearing Person is an oxymoron. A God-fearing person cannot be evil; If he is, he cannot be God-fearing. CORNEL: It is precisely because some guys are obsesively God-fearing that they can engage in horrendous evil. Why are some on Goanet so confused about this point? I believe that those who are not God Fearing, have a higher propensity of being evil. Cornel: obviously, the ultra devout Catholic Mafioso who definitely claim to be God-fearing, do not come into the frame for pure convenience! It is my belief that NO God fearing person will NEVER [Cornel: I am sure ever was meant and that this is a typo] commit violence against another ... except in self-defence. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
