Re: [Goanet] Konkani MP3 Songs
Some background on file-sharing. I really think the only sustainable way would be to convince artistes to put out some of their music under a copylefted music, and show them how it actually helps *them* (the artistes) to popularise their work, spread Goan music and benefit the music-enthusiast too. FN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_sharing File sharing first came into the public eye with the popularization of MP3 files in the mid- to late 1990s. MP3s would commonly be uploaded to free webspace accounts such as Geocities and Tripod, or online file storage services such as i-drive. This practice lasted for a short time until the webhosts realised what their webspace was being used for. Sites hosting MP3s uploaded to free webspace would often only last a very short while before the files were removed. MP3 sites counteracted this by uploading MP3s using fake file extensions which, again, worked for a short time until the webhosts realized what was happening. It wasn't until the advent of peer-to-peer software that file sharing became easily available to the average internet user. In 1999 Napster, originally a centralized system, became the first major P2P file-sharing tool, popularizing file sharing. Napster was a localized index for MP3 files shared by the users logged into the system. It included IRC-like chat and instant messaging features. Many new major clients now follow its example in design. An MP3-only sharing system, Napster was finally shut down by legal attacks from the music industry. It was openly attacked by some artists (notably Dr. Dre, Metallica) and supported by others (Mötley Crüe, Limp Bizkit, Courtney Love, Dave Matthews, David Crowder Band) File sharing (such as with the Gnutella and Napster networks) grew in popularity with the proliferation of high speed Internet connections and the (relatively) small file size and high-quality MP3 audio format. Although file sharing is a legal technology with legal uses, many users use it to download copyrighted materials without explicit permission: copyright infringement or "piracy". This has led to attacks against file sharing in general from some copyright owners. To all you skeptics, who thought nothing postiive could be done in terms of initiatives in Goa, take a look at a group that was made possible by the constant efforts of Goanetter Victor Rangel Ribeiro (and others, like Margaret Mascarenhas, the hosting of Fundacao Oriente, etc): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goawriters/ Victor has been encouraging writers on a persistent basis. Today he has a group going and active in Goa... with 36 participants. Giving back to Goa doesn't have to be in money. Mr. Rob Hudson, (Member of Parliament for Bentleigh) and a special representative of the Premier of Victoria, Mr. Steve Bracks, Hon. Mrs. Dympna Beard, Member of Parliament for Kilsyth and our honoured guest, Rev. Fr. Paul Gurry - Assistant Parish Priest at St. Peter's church, East Bentleigh. Mogal Goenkaranoo - Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls Mogh ani sontosh sogleank tumcam. What a fantastic turn out on our 4th annual World Goa Day 2006 event at this Kingston City Hall, Moorabbin and a special welcome to our friends who have come from other states to join in the celebration! Tonight, we have people from Brisbane, Roxby Downs 600 Kilometres from Adelaide and visitors from Dubai and Kuwait! Above all a warm WELCOME to each and every one of you - without you this event would not be success! My many thanks to my friends - Salus Correia and his wife Linda Correia and their family, Johnny Fernandes and his wife Emmy Fernandes and their family, Mr. & Mrs. Alfy and Lidia Martins, Henrietta and Callan Cure and my wife Hazel, my children Olivia, Henrietta and Oburn Lobo, who have all worked very hard to put this event together for you and your enjoyment! My whole hearted thanks to the young Goan dancers who have performed the Goan Harvest dance so splendidly with synchronized steps and danced to the Goan beat! I also thank our volunteers who have done a fantastic job this evening by preparing the hall in the morning as well as ushering everyone in the evening. After our Carnival event in February 2006, our honourable M.P. Mrs. Dympna Beard addressed the Parliament about Goan and our Goan community. We thank you for that Dympna! It was a history for our community that the name of Goa and its community got mentioned in Victorian Parliament. Please visit our website www.melgoans.com to see the extract of the speech under Ministerial Acknowledgements. As immigrants from Goa, many of us have established ourselves in this great nation! that we love and call home. Many of us have had the good fortune and the ability to travel overseas before settling in Australia and all of us are contributing to the prosperity of the country and Melbourne in particular. Although we are Goans and/or people of Goan origin, the question remains, how much do we love Goa and in what way? Do we love it the way we remember it when we left? Do we love it for what it is now? Are we living in the past or are we willing to deal with the present? We need to light the candle instead of cursing the darkness! While we go about our lives in peace and harmony here in Australia by integrating with mainstream Australians and our various friends in multicultural Melbourne, please remember there are several thousand others who continue to live in Goa, where sometimes the wheels of justice just spin without taking you forward. I take this opportunity on calling upon the two associations in Melbourne to come together as one organisation and iron out their differences to be a part of the multicultural Melbourne. In concluding I would like to thank Shan & Venus (whose banners you see around) for their part contribution in advertising their products on this grand occasion. Please patronize their shops for your grocery requirements. We also thank Cinnamon club, Maharani Restaurant, True Spice, Stellars Gift and to D'Nance Hair and Beauty Saloon in Bandoora for giving us prizes for the event. All other major prizes are from Melgoans Pty. Ltd. I now call upon Hon M.P. Mr. Rob Hudson - representative of the Premier of Victoria to say a few words. Please enjoy the rest of the evening, with Konkani saying competition, Konkani live songs, and a grand buffet that encompasses our well known 'sorpotel' ani Xacuti. Re: [Goanet] Propagation of a falsehood
In Gilbert's defence, one needs to clarify which one of his many grandmothers you folks are talking about. In Gilbert's case it works like this: If the historical observations in any way negatively implicate the church (as was the case with the destruction of the Hindu temples during the Inquistion), they are classified as "old kaneos" that are not to be believed. Anything else that satisfies his half baked ideas or should I say, his dogma is immediately accepted as part of his rock solid scientific, oops, moral code. I think it would be more appropriate to rename this thread to "propagation of falshoods by christian bigots". --- Santosh Helekar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > The post appended below propagates a falsehood about > me. Family killed in Santa Clara crash ID'd By Sandra Gonzales Mercury News Guest book: Share condolences for the Fernandes family Seconds after her Toyota Prius barreled into a family of three and came to a rest inside a Santa Clara shopping center, the driver emerged from the car and begged for help. ``I went over to her and saw she was all right,'' said Richard Stephens, a Safeway clerk who ran to her aid in the aftermath of the Friday night crash. But then he looked a few feet away. There lay a 3-year-old boy -- dead. ``I looked down and I could see he was gone,'' Stephens said. [Goanet] POPE :ROSARY FOR PEACE AND MISSION IN THE WORLD
1 October, 2006 VATICAN Pope: Rosary for peace and mission in the world Benedict XVI invited families and communities to pray the Rosary throughout October, a month dedicated also to the missions, which have as their patroness St Thérèse of the Child Jesus. The pope mentioned meeting the patriarch of Baghdad and also drew attention to degraded urban suburbs. Castel Gandolfo (AsiaNews) The month of October is traditionally dedicated to the Rosary, that ancient Marian prayer, and to the support of Catholic missions around the world. The pope concentrated his reflection before the Angelus the last this year at Castel Gandolfo on these two themes. As from Wednesday 4 October, after more than two months, he will return to the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. Taking his queue from the feast of the Blessed Virgin of the Most Holy Rosary on 7 October, Benedict XVI said Our Lady invites us to rediscover the beauty of this prayer. Even the beloved John Paul II was a great apostle of the Rosary: we remember him on his knees with the rosary beads in his hands, immersed in contemplation of Christ. The pope added: The rosary is a contemplative and Christ-centred prayer, inseparable from meditation of the Sacred Scripture. It is the prayer of the Christian who advances in the pilgrimage of faith, following Jesus, preceded by Mary. This is why Benedict XVI urged one and all to say the Rosary this month in families, in communities and in parishes for the popes intentions, for the mission of the Church and for peace in the world. The pontiff then recalled the missionary month and World Missions Day that will be marked on 22 October. The Church is missionary by nature, he said. As the Father has sent me, so I send you (Jn 20:21), said the resurrected Jesus to the Apostles in the Cenacle. The mission of the Church is the continuation of that of Christ: taking the love of God to all, announcing it with words and the concrete witness of charity. In the Message for the upcoming World Missions Day, I wanted to present charity precisely as the soul of mission. St Paul, the apostle of the nations, writes: For the love of Christ urges us on (2 Cor 5:14). May each Christian make these words his own, in the joyous experience of being a missionary of Love wherever Providence places him, with humility and courage, serving his neighbour without ulterior motives and drawing from prayer the strength of joyful and industrious charity (cfr Deus caritas est, 32-39). The pope also cited the patroness of missions, the Carmelite St Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who John Paul II proclaimed as Doctor of the Church. She, who indicated confident abandonment to the love of God as a simple way to holiness, helps us to be credible witnesses of the Gospel of charity. Most Holy Mary, Virgin of the Rosary and Queen of missions, lead us all to Christ the Saviour. After the Angelus prayer, Benedict XVI added a special request for prayers for Iraq: Yesterday I had the joy of meeting His Beatitude Emmanuel III Delly, Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans, who told me about the tragic reality faced daily by the dear people of Iraq, where Christians and Muslims have lived together for 14 centuries as children of the same land. I hope these bonds of fraternity among them will not be loosened, while, with sentiments of my spiritual closeness, I invite all to unite with me in asking Almighty God for the gift of peace and harmony for that martyred land. The popes proposal was greeted by long applause from the pilgrims gathered in the palace courtyard of Castel Gandolfo. Finally, before delivering greetings, Benedict XVI recalled World Habitat Day, called by the UN, dedicated this year to Cities, magnets of hope, to urbanization and the situation on suburbs, described by the pope as one of the most serious problems that mankind of the XXI century is called to face. And he added: I express my encouragement to those at local and international levels who work so that people living in degraded suburbs, may be assured of worthy conditions of life and the fulfillment of their basic needs, as well as the possibility of realizing their aspirations, especially within the family and in pacific social coexistence. __ Yahoo! Re: [Goanet] Public Sins, Private Lucre, Goa Damned
My dear Roland Francis, You couldn't be more well-meaning and sincere when you say that my party does not have no grass-roots. I have grown from Goa's soil. And I have assimilated everything that is GOAN to last me throughout my lifetime. I have planted trees. I have grown vegetables that indeed grow roots, some of them so succulent that we relish them as 'KOND'GHEO' , more specifically known as Taleigao'cheo kond'gheo, as these coming from Taleigao are sweeter than most, it is believed. And I have cut trees, and burnt their roots so that these trees do not grow again. But never in my life have I seen 'grass' growing roots. Therefore, when I helped form this party, we made sure that we would never use grass to depend on the roots it never grows. We instead opted to plant trees, real trees, deep in the GOAN SOIL so that we could depend on these trees, however few they may be, for all times; trees that will give us sweet and nourishing fruits and not poisonous ones that would make us sick if we ingested or ate, knowingly or unknowingly; trees that would stand tall and sway in the fiercest of temptests and not up-root and fall; trees that would withstand the worst of the bush fires that would decimate the bushes along the the 'grass', however tall, along with their non-existent roots. Having said that, dear Roland, I have seen Dayanand Bandodkar cultivating grass-roots. He used so much colour to differentiate his grass without roots that when Komal (Lotus) came around, it saw a fertile growth of like-coulored grass and gobbled it whole heartedly and effortlessly having found out that it had no roots. By the way, the Komal was and is a carnivore which has ultimately even gobbled Bandodkar's pet Lion. Therefore, having learnt a life's lesson, my party, as I have said above, does not want to cultivate grass that never grows roots and which is very easy to be burnt, even when it is in its prime and all green. Instead, my party has built a sailing ship and equiped it with most modern and innovative instruments of navigation. And we have anchored it in mid stream with sail unfolded. And we want the strongest of winds to blow her way and give full blast of its might to into its sails that will uproot the ship's anchor and set it free in the stream to navigate and reach its destination, making full use of her time tested navigational aids. And those navigational aids, my dear Roland, are aptly described in the Party's ROAD MAP for all to know, and endear their guaranted potentials. What you are suggesting is fully accepted. In time, when trees that we have helped to be planted grow deep enough roots, these things will be taken care of, automatically. And one last thing that I want you to know from you is, pray 'Who is in a HURRY here?' It is certainly not my party. We are relaxed enough in the understanding that we shall perish along with everyone else if we have to perish. And we shall lead if everyone else wants us to lead Goa to its full blooming and certainly potent future. I thank you very much for your acute concern. I know that you mean well. Please excuse my talking through my hat. But I see no reason not to do so. With kind regards Floriano Lobo NB. Floriano Vaz is Goa's martyr of the Language agitation. God Rest his Soul in Peace and may he Pray for GOA. - Original Message - From: "Roland Francis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!" Sent: Monday, October 02, 2006 9:04 AM Subject: Re: [Goanet] Public Sins, Private Lucre, Goa Damned Dear Floriano Vaz, In my humble opinion you are a worthy political advocate for the issues that need to be addressed in Goa, but if you continue to do what you are doing, you will go on achieving the same results. These results being that your party has no grassroots following and you are just one more voice of conscience that everybody ignores. Your party needs a political makeover and until it gets that, you must engage yourself and those willing to help you in such matters, single-mindedly and wholly focused in one and one strategy only. Valmiki's post shows the direction. Goa is a fertile bed for the growth of corruption. It is a bountiful land with the most tolerant and accommodating people. That is what appeals to tourists. That alas that is also what appeals to the horrible disease of corruption that dwarfs every other public evil in its wake. It leaves the ordinary citizen robbed of self worth. All other public evils flow from just this one. If left unchecked, as Valmiki so aptly put it - Goa is damned. There's no benefit in saying that if Goans are kept alive to the issues of a crooked politician, he is able to garner the votes of the uneducated and poor outsiders. They have self worth too and if they are included in the equation of the fight against corruption, the corrupt will have no refuge. No number of Clinton Vazs will have any meaningful effect. Yes they will be called in by the Sanjith Rod

[Goanet] Distortion of posts on Goanet / response to Mario
Hi Mario, Thank you very much for sparing your valuable time to correct various individuals' misquotes and misunderstandings of my post, the illustration and the point I was trying to make. You perhaps could be spending your whole life doing this.:=)) Yet, the serious issue I have, is not the quality-time you spend trying to explain my (and other) posts in further simple English. But why do otherwise intelligent Goans make it difficult to understand some straight-forward simple concepts, specifically written in the lay person's English. This instead of making no attempt at all to grasp the message. Then, they try to present themselves as experts of something they know very little. As you may know, they misrepresent / distort this (and other) issues and then demonize it. Then they present themselves as "the know it all" (aum soglem zano) and more knowledgeable than the recognized experts. At least this is my explanation. As seen from Santosh's recent response to you, now I will have to be a linguist, with every line and every paragraph standing on its own. This in addition to being a 'nice good country doctor' specialized in cancer treatment (radiation oncology). My patients would not want me to change. Perhaps the mice may, though I doubt it.:=)) Finally, (see below) did I read Santosh object to my "GENERALIZATIONS made"? Wow! Miracles happen! Re: [Goanet] China and Russia
Hi Peter Further to recent discussion we had on Russia and China, there was an excellent programme here on TV showing China's approach to capital punishment. The details were truly horrendous and gut wrenching but would have warmed the cockles of Carmo's heart! >From memory, China seems to have more executions than the rest of the world combined. It has at least 68 offences requiring the death penalty by hanging. These included (petty) tax fraud. What was most horrendous (and to public knowledge), was that there is a very lucrative trade in organ sales of the executed prisoners. Most sales are to well-to-do foreigners especially at certain times of year when there are celebratory mass executions. I would not be surprised if some who planned to visit China for the next Olympics may change their minds after seeing the TV programme. I had forgotten to mention previously that, China's expropriation of Tibet is totally unacceptable to me. In jest, however, I have to say that Tibet is unfortunate not to have oil deposits. Otherwise, Bush would have been there in a flash in the interests of democracy! Finally, I can't find signs of creeping communism in Russia as suggested by you. I do know however that, there are many old timers who would gladly return to communism, as to them, life was more comfortable then than under the competitiveness of the new capitalism. This also reminds me that, when I spent three weeks in Russia in 1969 at the height of the Cold War, and Russia was definitely a police state, most of the churches were open to the public and religious services were plentiful in Moscow, St Petersburgh (Leningrad then) and Kiev among the larger cities. Local Russians seemed free to attend services and students I spoke to seemed able to reconcile their belief in communism with belief in Orthodox Christianity. There also were many young Americans in Russia who claimed to be studying Russians. Some told me privately that it was their way of dodging the war in Vietnam. Understandably, most of them had Russian girlfriends and money from their dads to use on cars and other goodies! It might also have been at about the same time Clinton avoided the draft in Oxford and George Bush Jr did likewise elsewhere. [Goanet] GOA of New Jersey Whist Drive Cards tournament
Great cash prizes will be the main feature at the fifth Annual Goan Association of New Jersey (GOANJ) Whist Drive "Seven Hands" cards tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday, October 21 at the Hightstown Firehouse Hall in central Jersey. It will be followed by bingo and a "Sing-A-Long" session. Three others events in November and December will culminate the GOANJ 2006 social calendar. For the Faithful, A Half Day Retreat will be held at the Vincentian Renewal Center in the Princeton area on Sunday, November 5. This will be followed by the Children's Christmas Party on Sunday, December 10 at the Hightstown Firehouse Hall. But the highlight of the events will be the annual Holiday (Christmas) Ball on Saturday, December 16 at the Ukranian Cultural Center in Somerset. After their instant success at last year's dance, the popular Toronto band - the "Naked Flame" will be featured again. (Led by the well known bassist and singer- Joe Rebello, the band recently played at a New Jersey goan wedding). Last year's dance was a total sell-out - despite boycotts from certain tri-state areas- depriving many folks including some visiting Toronto guests of tickets. The GOANJ PLanning Committee is taking no chances and cautioning potential attendees to purchase their tickets early to avoid disappointment. This is the second time in the Association's 15-year history that the dance had "maxed" out; and this year's annual summer picnic for members and their non-resident guests also "maxed" out for the first time. [Goanet] OCTOBER THE MONTH OF HOLY ROSARY
Our Blessed Mother once complained: My little children are not taught the true meaning of the Rosary . "When the Rosary is said properly, power is behind it. Say it with My Divine Son and Me in mind, and ask Me to bring about the true value of this Devotion,. then each bead said well can conquer a host of men. Correct method of praying the Rosary The great St. Bernard, Doctor of the Church, gives us the correct method of praying the Rosary and if adopted, surprising results will follow. He states in his writing on the subject: "While your lips pronounce the words let your mind 'picture' the Mystery-not as an event which took place centuries ago, but as events taking place NOW in your presence. In each mental picture thus formed, see also yourself there in the scene, studying the scene. St. Bernard warns not to change the mental 'picture' but let it remain unchanged. He states that if the 'picture' is recalled without change, it will become more lifelike. During your course of coming to a deeper understanding of The Rosary, a clearer mental picture of each Mystery will be attained if only one meditation on a mystery is studied each day. Better effects may result, if someone would read aloud each of the meditations on the different mysteries while the others of the family listen. After several weeks, the various members of the family could take turns at reading the meditations so that all may share alike the opportunity to profit from the Scriptural promise: "Faith comes through hearing." The percentages of such liaisons were probably greater among upper caste Catholic Goans leading to differences not only between castes but also on lines of religion. Hi Des I reckon there is no alternative to access to the Panjim records office now. I was in the same dilemma as you last April, and asked the archivist in Panjim the same question as I was willing to pay for a service. He did warn me however that, there could be dubious offers of service for money and that authenticity was only possible through a personal search. I believe he is right on this. I am not sure when I might be able to undertake a personal search going back several generations to at least the start of the pre-Portuguese era but I live in hope! What is clear is that, a combination of Church records and Panjim records need to be examined personally. There are gaps in both sets of records. Re: [Goanet] Distortion of posts on Goanet
Mario wrote: As further proof, you went out of your way to misquote Gilbert in order to make your point. The actual quote after the mice experiment is as follows: "So "old grand-mothers' tales" are not to be ignored except at our own peril!" Previously Gilbert had said, "Many a time, we "mock" peoples' beliefs as myths or "Old grandmothers' tale"Yet, often "Old grandmothers' observations" are on orclose to the mark." Sunith responds: Mario, please go through the post again and tell me what comes immediately after the mice expeiment. Please take your time and stop foolishly and falsely accusing me of misquoting anyone. I can convert it to audio format and send it to you if you are having trouble reading. The following quote appears in Gilberts Post in Goanet Digest 327 under the Subject line "Re: Science as Religion / response to Fred (Gilbert Lawrence)" (Quote)A few years ago, an experiment was undertaken where a batch of mice were injected with an identical quantity (volume) of aggressive cancer cells. As expected the mice developed multiple tumors (metastasis) in the lung. Half the mice were then operated to remove tumors from just one lung. The other half of the batch of mice did not undergo any surgery. The mice were then followed. The mice with their tumor (partly) removed died much earlier than the group where the tumors in both lungs were allowed to grow uninterrupted. Thus the grandmother's observation was accurate.(End of Quote) So I ask again, Does this paragraph not clearly (no biases involved, just plain English) state that the mice experiment has proved the "grandmothers kani" as accurate? Of course he falls over his own point in the next paragraph when he gives the actual scientific explanation for the results. [Goanet] Goan Inter-village Football Tournament 2006 held at Al Nasr Dubai - organised by Goan Cultural Society
In the ongoing Ramadan Cup 2006 Goan Inter-village Football Tournament organized by Goan Cultural Society held at Al Nasr grounds, two matches played yesterday ended in a draw. In the first encounter, ABC Benaulim(EK ICA) faced stiff challenge from Siolim United. Benaulim wasted several chances in the first half. In the 4th min. Benny Silveira of Benaulim was unlucky not to beat Siolim custodian Lorry. Minute later Benny's right cross to Leslie just went off the bar. However, in the 13th min. Siolim United were denied a goal scoring chance. Sidney Pereira's close range shot well saved by Benaulim goalkeeper. Both teams locked their horns with no score at half time and that continued till end of the final whistle, since both teams played defensive football. But Sandy Fernandes of ABC Benaulim was more aggressive in his approach and rightly adjudged Man of the Match. In the 2nd game, Chinchinim(UAE EXCHANGE Abu Dhabi) held Anjuna(Eurostar First Logistics) to 1 goal each. In the fast paced first half, both teams played attacking football. In the 5th min. Sandeep Sadekar's solo effort almost put Chinchinim in front, but his superb volley punched away by Anjuna keeper Jose Rodrigues. Benny D'costa, Sandeep kept Anjuna defense under check, whilst Anjuna's Avinash Figerado, who scored hat-trick in previous match, Jose Rogtao, Savio Pereira and Elison Fernandes failed to break the deadlock at half-time. But in the second half, Anjuna mounted pressure in Chinchinim defence. A free kick shot in 4th min. by Avinash Figerado saw Anjuna take 1-0 lead. But their joy lasted for only one minute, as Man of the Match Sandeep Sadekar scored from close range to level the score 1-1 and share the points. This year's tournament is sponsored by Lipton, Eurostar First Logistics and Jeema water. Today (2nd Oct.06) game schedule at Al Nasr Grounds: At 15.45 - Saligao Village Foxes v/s Calangute (Doha Bank) At 16.45 - Varca Sports Club v/s Sirsaim Sports Club.
