2007-10-17 Thread Roland Francis
Actually Natekar, you need not confine yourself to merely talking
about all your undermentioned grievances. You can actually send in the
Indian Armed Forces to bomb the hell out of Pakistan and Bangladesh
who seem responsible for all that, either directly or indirectly.
Next, you can send the Forces off to do the same to Afghanistan, Iran,
and the Islamic Central Asian republics (from where the Moghuls came)
and then to Britain and Portugal to do likewise. Count until they
reach a 100 million too.

Why stop at that? Now that you are on a roll, you can ethnically
cleanse the entire Muslim and Christian communities in India itself.
For good measure you can wipe off the Sikhs so that Khalistan never
comes up again and just to be nice and detailed, you can erase the
Parsis and the Jains since they hold a goodly size of the economic
cake and the Baha'is who believe in everybody's Gods and have none of
their own.

Rather than rest, you can then start off on the tribals, Dalits and
other lower castes of the Hindus. There are lots of them and that
should take some time. Progress to the Yadavs and other low caste
sympathisers. After you do all that, then sit and make further plans
to take India to the 21st century and making it a Gobal Power.

Roland.

Inorder to form a nation, one must suffer some
historical amnesia. By all means let us talk about
atrocities committed against all and any section of
humanity, but let us now chronicle some aspects of it
and view it through the prism of history. Not nurse
them like they happened yesterday.

Who are we holding responsible for the British, the
Portuguese, and the Moguls? Certainly the hapless
souls who were converted and whose descendants today
are Christians and Muslims, had no part to play in
these atrocities. Are we holding them responsible and
accountable?

Let's not deny that terrorism exists in all its
malfeasance and porous that it is, it is infecting
India. But this is a law and order problem, one that
needs police vigilance and political action.

Let us also not deny that Indian secularism has been
one of appeasement, which is why so much religion
seeps into public life, where it has no place. Let's
ensure that Indian polity develops a spine.

Let's not deny that this pandering to minorities has
actually left minorities like Muslims disadvantaged
rather then put then at an advantage. Large sections
of Muslims are impoverished and disenfranchised but
this is a social problem and they should be assisted
by the State and every fellow Indian citizen rather
than victimised for it.

The problem is not that you want to talk about these
issues. The problem is that you are making it a us v/s
them issue. Who is a Hindu, a Muslim, a Christian in
India?

When you make it a us v/s them issue, you are setting
the grounds for a civil war and just ask the Bosnians
and Serbs, or the Sunnis and Shias how that turned
out.

It is very strange that no Muslim have objected to the FACT Photo
 Exhibition.

Do you seriously think they are enjoying the way they are being painted
as the enemy? That is the success of the Hindutvavadis -- the people
they are hounding are often too scared to raise their heads above the
trenches and protest, for fear of getting their heads shot off for their
pains. Go visit Gujarat, you can see the situation at its starkest
there, in the self-proclaimed laboratory of Hindutva, where the fear
among the minorities is palpable, and they are forced to swallow their
hurt and pain for fear of having worse miseries visited upon them.

Then why the Christians and phony secularists are so much
 concerned about ?

But injustice must be protested, or it reigns unchallenged, and grows in
strength. That's where others -- however you define them -- come in.

Christians and Muslims all over the world are
enemies of one another, but in secular India alone they are always
found on the same side against their common enemy : Hinduism.

You appear to have been reading Samuel Huntington's Clash of
Civilizations, one of George Bush's favourite bedtime fairy tales.

 Let me
put in a straight forward words to you , Hindus are not going to be
intimidated by your illusionary malady of bias propaganda which is
appealing and exhilarating fabrication of facts.

Your purple prose is running away with you :-) And now you arrogate to
yourself the role of spokesperson of all Hindus, just like the Sangh
Parivar does. But much to its chagrin, it has not succeeded. The vast
Hindu majority (like the majority of people from all religions) is too
balanced and against hate and violence to fall easy prey to such propaganda.

 You have the right
 to express your opinions

Thank you, sir, that is very kind of you!

but you can not deny the truth and facts to
 be exposed.

Expose away, though what gets exposed in the process is there for all to
see.

In west, historically secularism stood for rationalism,
universalism, humanism . In India today secularism is united front of
all anti hindu ideologists. In the context of minority appeasement it
has resulted unfortunate perversion of India?s political parlance.
The most spectacular thing about the fraudulent liberals and anti
hindu secular brigade that they will never take up the cause of the
organized genocide of Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir.

Do you seriously think that repeating yourself over and over again like
a stuck record will make people believe you? This is getting tiresome,
but okay, here goes. Will Teesta Setalvad, the editor of Communalism
Combat, serve as an example of the kind of people you describe as
'psuedo-secular'? I rather think she will do, given the vitriolic
invective against her on this very forum by various apologists of Hindutva.

Well, Communalism Combat has regularly focused on the plight of Kashmiri
Pandits. See, for example, the article at
http://sabrang.com/cc/comold/sep00/mino.htm. The other examples are too
numerous to mention, just go to sabrang.com, and search the 'Communalism
Combat' archives for 'Kashmir' and see for yourself.

Another of the favourite themes of the FACT-wallahs and their ilk is
Hindus in Bangladesh (Francois Gautier has done another exhibition on
this theme). Well, Communalism Combat regularly features this issue.
See, for example, http://sabrang.com/cc/archive/2004/sep04/cover.html,
and http://sabrang.com/cc/archive/2001/dec01/cover.htm. Again, there are
many more examples -- just type 'Bangladesh' in the search and see for
yourself.

Of course, where Teesta Setalvad fails, from your point of view, is to
use these cases to whip up passions against innocent Muslims who have
nothing to do with all this. That is the speciality of FACT, the HJS and
the Sangh Parivar in general. Teesta Setalvad actually uses these cases
(as she does the violence against minorities in India) to argue against
communalism and spread a message of peace and tolerance. And so she and
her ilk are damned in your eyes.

 Criticizing
anything anti ?Hindu activities are painted as communal and tagged as
pro Sangh Parivar. To sum up: -Talking about and exposing ethnic
cleansing and massacre of Hindus in Kashmir is communal. -Talking
about Mumbai, Varanasi, Delhi Jehadi terrorist bomb blasts is
communal. -Talking about the genocide of Hindus in Pakistan and
 Bangladesh is communal.

Need I go on? Again, search the archives of Communalism Combat for all
these issues and see for yourself. Okay, you don't like this example? Go
to pluralindia.com, which hosts the articles of another of the targets
of your ire, Ram Puniyani. Search for these issues and see for yourself.
Search the writings and work of any of the people you describe as
'psuedo-secular' and you will see that they have roundly condemned all
this.

[Goanet] Random thoughts: wrt Goa politics and the players

Random Thoughts:

Ministers of Government

1. Ministers of Government would probably manage the affairs of the
public better IF they used the same transport, health facilities and
airport lounges as the one their masters (general public) have to use.

2. It could be argued that they provide a Government Service - sure!.
So they should be provided with a travel allowance and government
quarters in the Government Servants colony.

3. They should be provided with police protection. So should their
bosses (the public)

4. If, like all other government servants, they choose to use their
own vehicle, they should be free to do so.

5. They should receive a 15% gratuity upon successful and satisfactory
completion of their contract.

Of Goa Suraj this and Goa Suraj that

6. Goans should be extra free to criticise Goa Suraj for not doing
what they (the Goans) want them to do - but do not bother to assist
with in any shape or form.

Of Wilfred Mesquita - a Catholic candidate for BJP

7. Willie is a good man. He is also a good doctor. He is the second
Dr. Willie who is wasting his medical skills by getting involved in
politics.

8. Nothing surprising about Willie and the BJP - if one remembers that
the BJP is actually a updated version of the MGP, and that Willie has
a (long) history of being an MGP, No prizes here for understanding why
Willie is now with the BJP.

9. BUT Willie is a good and decent man. If I was able to vote in
the election (inconsequential as it is), I would vote for my good
friend Willie Mesquita - even if He later was to take a politically
'principled' decision to rejoin the Congress fold IF (for instance),
he was offered the post of Union Minister of State for Sports.

10. Life will go on undisturbed thereafter.

[Goanet] oops ! Indian share market sees 9% slump.

2007-10-17 Thread Gabe Menezes
Indian share market sees 9% slump
Trading on India's main stock index, the Sensex, was suspended briefly
on Wednesday, after the market slumped 9%.

The fall came after the stock market regulator proposed urgent curbs
on the flow of foreign funds into shares, in order to stop the market
overheating.

The Sensex sank to 17,544.15, after Tuesday's record high of
19,174.45, while the rupee also lost value. Trading resumed after an
hour.

India's finance minister said that there was no need for alarm.

Some of the early losses were clawed back when trading resumed, with
the Sensex down 6.1% at 17,799.69.

'Abundant investment'

The regulator's recommendation relates to participatory notes - a form
of investment used by hedge funds and other foreign investors who are
not registered in India.

Investor sentiment is likely to weaken considerably as an important
source of potential inflows has likely been plugged
Rajeev Malik, JP Morgan

Analysts say the proposal may be aimed at countering a surge in
foreign money that has caused Indian share prices to rise sharply -
worrying some policy makers about its potential impact on the broader
economy.

Finance minister P Chidambaram said that foreign investment was still
welcome and that a ban on the notes was not intended.

But presently it is important to moderate capital flows, which are
getting very copious and abundant, he said.

Analysts at JP Morgan suggested that of the $17bn of foreign funds
invested in India so far this year, about $10bn has been in
participatory notes.

Investor sentiment is likely to weaken considerably as an important
source of potential inflows has likely been plugged, said Rajeev
Malik, an economist at the firm.

And Shitin Desai of DSP Merrill Lynch said that the market was
reacting nervously to a proposed regulatory move.

This is the first step towards tighter norms for overseas funds,
which is healthy.

India is seen by many investors as one of the safest havens among the
emerging markets as investors try to tap into one of the world's
best-performing economies.

The rupee has risen more than 11% against the US dollar since the
start of the year. It stood at 39.31 to the dollar at Tuesday's close,
but had weakened to 39.90 early on Wednesday.

Re: [Goanet] Should we take care of our parents, should we care about our children at all?

2007-10-17 Thread JOHN MONTEIRO
I am sure that Selma Edward do not mean to say that Charity does not begin
at home, nor do they mean that families ought not to band together to help
each other in times of need.

The original story was that a mother was abandoned by her two sons when
they left for another country, in search of work. They found it and basically
forgot all about mother, even when they came back to Goa on a visit, they
stayed only a very short while, leaving her alone, as a widow to cope on her
own.

Broken hearted poor in spirit as well as ready cash, she passed away
eventually, but it was found that she saved some of the money, for her funeral.
This was found in her hand when a neighbour came by saw her door ajar, went
indoors found the body.

The majority of us can do better with our lives, but the older one gets, the
less of a memory we have. But we dont forget our children, in turn the
children ought not to forget their parents. Ok so the boys thought, the old
woman has a piece of land a field, a house to live in what more does she want?

Maybe its true, she had all this but did she know how to convert this into
real money, cash she could have used? But is this really about money? Or is
it a wake up call to all of us to be a little kinder to our relatives, friends
and neighbours?

We can all provide ourselves with pensions, start saving in your 20's and you
will be laughing all the way to the supermarket checkout, you can buy anything
you want. But when you become a parent, of two or more children, try to work
out how much each child costs in terms of cash, over a year, not including
their private education if this is the way it goes and you will find the money
you ought to have for yourself and partner has actually deteriorated by over
70%.

Have your children and give them to the state to look after, save yourself
all the worry of caring and nurturing your children, the sleepless nights, the
worry when they develop asthma the trips to the hospital, thinking this is
it, we will be coming back on our own this time. All the fuss and worry about
looking clean and smart when going to school, providing lunch money, they are
with you 24/7 and rely on you.

Why bother? Let someone else take care of them. Welcome to the 21st century.
Oh of course this is not the way forward for some people, but a good way out
if you want to provide for your own old age, after all children that we create
and the mother carries about with her for 9 agonising months (thanks to the
changes in hormones over this period, its not as bad for her, but if dad had to
do it, there would only be one-child families, believe me!).

Good luck to all who care look after their children, perhaps we ought to
take more time to teach them a bit more about caring for the less fortunate a
bit more, and less about career chasing and putting off parenthood until their
mid-30's and in their 40's.

Charity begins and ought to grow, in the home, for parents, for children, for
neighbours and friends. There are several hundred ashrams in India where enough
children can be found abandoned due to parents dying of HIV / Aids, starvation
or just not enough room for them anymore, we need a safety net for these
people, not for the rest of the nation to consider dumping more onto the
ashrams. Perhaps even take a child from these ashrams if you have the room,
the money and the compassion to do this.

[Goanet] Beware the exhibition of hatred...

2007-10-17 Thread Sachin Phadte

To my comment (In this thread, the point made by Mashall is valid only if the
exhibition in question was organised by the BJP.), Marshall Mendonza writes:
Sachin, you and I and everyone knows that the organisation holding the
exhibition is from the sangh parivar stable which includes the BJP.

I am sorry, but I do not know that this is a fact. And if Marshall has some
proof on the subject, then please let me know.

However, I do know for a fact that Vidyadhar Gadgil is a Marxists, in the way
he signs off his messages. I am not much enamoured with the Communist ideology.
But that does not mean that I should ignore what he says.

Secondly, when the Sambhaji Brigade in Pune vandalised the Bhandarkar Oriental
Research Institute due to some unsavoury remarks against Shivaji made by an
author who claimed that he had the support of the Insitute, there were
immediate accusations that this Brigade was part of the Sangh or Shiv Sena.
Very soon it turned out that the Brigade is actually a political opponent of
both. I know that Vidyadhar had posted a long note on why the Hindu Jangaruti
Samiti is a Sangh Parivar organisation. But that was just a verbal allegations,
without any basis.

To my more important comment (Secondly, even if the BJP did not do anything,
does it mean that the plight of the Kashmiri Pandits should be ignored? More
than 300,000 have been living as refugees in their own land, since 1989.),
Marshall writes: I do agree that the Kashmiri Pandits should be rehabilitated
in their homeland. But the sangh parivar is not sincere about this. Please let
me know what measures they have taken to rehabilitate them, other than use them
for propaganda purpose.

Even though I said that even if the BJP did not do anything, he wants to know
from me what measures the Sangh has taken to rehabilitate them. And while he
seeks from me about these measures, should he not ask so many others, who claim
to be the champions in protecting the rights of the minorities, about what they
have done? For example, Ram Punyani comes all over from Mumbai to talk about
the plight of the Muslims. Why does he not talk about the Kashmiri Pandits?
(Incidentally, being in Mumbai, I have read quite a few times the name of Ram
Punyani, but never in context of the rehabilitation of the Pandits.)

I do look forward to a focussed response from Marshall.

Sachin Phadte.

[Goanet] Statement by Shri Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI Affairs, at his press briefing (October 16, 2007)

2007-10-17 Thread Eduardo Faleiro
STATEMENT BY SHRI EDUARDO FALEIRO, COMMISSIONER FOR NRI AFFAIRS, AT HIS
PRESS BRIEFING

(OCTOBER 16, 2007)

I shall be visiting the Gulf countries in the months of November and
December next to interact with Goan emigrants and to meet officials of the
local Government dealing with questions of emigration at the political and
other senior levels. My tour to the different countries of the Gulf region
is being organized by the Ministry of External Affairs and by our Embassies
in those countries. I will be accompanied by the Chairman of the Overseas
Employment Agency of Goa, Vice Admiral (retd.) John d' Silva and the
Director for NRI Affairs, Shri U.D. Kamat.

In the first leg of my visit to the Gulf region I shall visit Kuwait from
November 7-9 and Doha (Qatar) from November 11-13. During my visit to Kuwait
I shall meet the Minister of Social Welfare and Labour of the State of
Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, hold discussions with Kuwaiti officials,
meet the community organizations and other relevant organizations and
discuss matters concerning attestation, documentation etc. with Al-Haqooq
lawyers who manage the legal affairs of our Embassy in Kuwait. I will also
attend the Goa Day celebrations organized by the Goan Welfare Society on
November 9 and participate in a seminar arranged by the Society.

My visit to Doha (Qatar) will be on November 11-13 and broadly on the lines
of the visit to Kuwait.

The visits to Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Muscat will be held by the end
of November and in December next.

. The Report of the Global Goans Convention (Gomant Vishwa Samelan) held
last January has been released today. It will help the Government to frame
appropriate policies for the welfare of non-resident Goans. The Report is
available free of cost to all those who participated in the Convention or
their authorized representatives. Copies of the Report will also be sent to
our Embassies in countries with a significant Goan population.

We have received several requests for participation and financial support to
Goan Conventions being organized in different parts of the world. Last June,
the Goan Community in Portugal held their Convention in Lisbon The Goan
Diaspora from Goa into the world. I could not attend this Convention due to
other preoccupations and at my request our Chief Secretary and the Director,
NRI Affairs, represented the State Government and the Department of NRI
Affairs on this occasion. A sum of 5000 Euros was granted by this Department
as financial support to this Convention. This Department will also provide
some financial support to the Conference Goan Diaspora-between the Home and
the Host being held on December 15 in New Delhi by Goenkarancho Ekvot, an
organization of the Goan community in the capital.

Several NRG organizations across the world wish to hold Conventions of the
Goan community and seek our support. Regarding such Conventions abroad it
has been decided that this Department will finance one such Convention per
year tentatively to the extent of Rs. 3 lakh subject to the following:

1. The Annual Convention should be held by rotation in different continents
and in a country where there is a significant population of NRGs;

2. The local organization should hold the Convention at a time when maximum
attendance can be obtained in that country;

3. The organization should be recommended by our Embassy or High Commission
in the respective country; and

4. The programme of the Convention should be drawn in consultation with this
Office.

In view of our decision to support one NRG Convention (Gomant Vishwa
Samelan) every year abroad, we may not hold such a Convention in Goa in
future. It is felt that such a Convention in Goa can be organized only at
the time of Christmas and the New Year, a time of family get togethers and a
pletora of other social and cultural activities, and this makes it difficult
for our NRGs to attend the Convention in large numbers.

. During my visit to New Delhi last month I requested Shri Vyalar Ravi,
Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, to invite Goan cultural troupes to
perform in Goa and elsewhere in the country. I mentioned to him the group
Ekvott based in Portugal which is of a high quality. The Minister agreed.
In case Ekvot or other Goan troupes are interested in visiting India they
should indicate their interest to us at the earliest so that we may finalize
their tour in consultation with MOIA.

Wendell Rodricks collection reflects beauty of Goa beaches
October 17, 2007

Fit for the tranquil beaches around the world, 'Wendell Rodricks' Goa
Spa collection for Spring/Summer 2008 at Lakme Fashion Week reflected
the beauty of the designer's home state.

The all-white unstructured men's and women's line was in typical Wendell
style - flowing fabrics, loose shapes, asymmetric cuts, innovative
construction, fine detailing and a comfort that will put the wearer at
complete ease.

Poor maintenance may cause Goa lose shootings: Filmmakers

Panaji (PTI): Increasing loss of greenery from Goa, demolition of old
structures and shabby beaches have worried local filmmakers and heritage
activists who fear that the state may not remain a favourite film
shooting destination.

Goa is preferred for its natural beauty and beaches. But in the days to
come, if we lose our greenery, we may lose distinction of being
favourite film shooting destination, national award winning film
producer from Goa Rajendra Talak told PTI.

Talak said Goa has been famous with filmmakers since late 70s. On an
average, 20 to 30 big films shoot their sequences here. But, it has
never developed as an exclusive shooting place. The film is shot for a
short duration which may make up for four to five minutes of the entire
film, Talak, who has produced Konkani and Marathi films, said.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: In the midst of Goans

2007-10-17 Thread Goanet Reader
IN THE MIDST OF GOANS

By Vidyadhar Gadgil
vgadgil at gmail.com

Twenty years ago, when I first lived and worked in Goa, I
attended a workshop on threats to Goa's environment and
culture. It was there that I first heard the term 'bhaille'
(outsiders). It was one of the recurring motifs of the
workshop that the 'bhaille' were the biggest threats to Goa's
environment.

I was taken aback, as this was an event attended by liberals
and activists, where one would not have expected such
viewpoints.

Another term I heard was 'ghati'. There was clearly a
negative value attached to the term, which in Maharashtra is
used to describe rustics. Intrigued, I devoted a fair bit of
time to examining the issue.

It seemed contradictory that I -- 'bhaillo' and 'ghati' --
never felt any particular hostility directed towards myself;
in fact, I met with an easy acceptance. Was this because of
my class or caste background? Not entirely, I discovered.
Goans are truly among the most tolerant and easygoing of
people, not easily given to prejudice.

It was not only me, there was no overt hostility towards the
people from outside Goa who lived and worked in Goa. When
talking about 'outsiders', what people were protesting was a
phenomenon -- their perceived lack of control over the
development process -- rather than individuals. There was
also a genuine anger against the tourism industry's
despoilation of Goa and against the anti-people pattern of
development that people felt, with some justice, was being
imposed upon them from outside Goa.

Those were heady times -- there was a churning in Goa as the
masses began to assert their identity and demand their
rights. The Konkani agitation, the movement against tourism
spearheaded by the Jagrut Goenkaranchi Fauz (JGF), the
movement for statehood -- they all redefined the political
landscape of Goa. At a public meeting on May 30, 1987, the
day Goa attained statehood, the mood was one of jubiliation:
it was the dawn of hope.

Over the next ten years, my involvement with Goa continued,
albeit somewhat intermittently, so I was aware that these
hopes were being largely crushed.

Yet, in 1997, when my family and I shifted to Goa to settle
here permanently, it came as a bit of shock to see the change
in the public mood; it was as if the churning of the mid-80s
had never happened. The movement for genuine change had been
sidetracked, marginalized or co-opted by the political class
and corporate interests, and it was business as usual. A
cynicism and tiredness had set in amongst the
no-longer-so-young activists I knew in the mid-80s.

But around 2005 the churning process began once
  again, as globalization and neo-liberalization
began to be revealed for the chimeras that they
were. People looked around them and discovered to
their horror that the development process had been
hijacked and turned against the people. The beaches
had become privatized concrete jungles, Goa's
forests were facing the axe as the construction
boom reached ridiculous proportions, and Goa's
politicans fattened themselves at the expense of
the masses. Once again, the common man was feeling
  marginalized and threatened.

One response to this has been a questioning of the very
concept of development. The people's movement which
crystallised around the Goa Bachao Abhiyan has redefined the
way development is perceived. Development which enriches a
few at the expense of the masses and destroys Goa's
environment is not true development, this strand of thought
avers. It is not the mass of people -- of Goan descent or
otherwise -- who are the problem. It is those who heedlessly
plunder Goa's resources -- politicians, industrialists and
various kinds of middlemen -- and sell them to the highest
bidder that are the problem. To paraphrase the speech of Dr.
Oscar Rebello, the convenor of the GBA, at the massive public
rally in Panjim on December 19, 2006: It is not non-Goans
who are the problem; it is the anti-Goans.

There is however, another response to Goa's current crisis.
This seeks to externalise the problem and, following a
xenophobic and reactionary line of thought, blames the
workers who come to Goa from other parts of India to earn
their living. Ignoring the fact that these workers make a
vital contribution to Goa's economy, they are despised and
condemned on the basis of the fact that they are poor and
come from different cultures and traditions. Rather than look
at their relationship with the community and the environment,
their ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds are focused
upon.

The stigmatization of the 'ghatis' and 'bhaille' has now
reached frightening proportions. The worst example of this
was when the Sanvordem-Curchorem communal violence of March
2006 was sought to be justified on the grounds that its
targets were 'outsiders'. The growing communalization of the
Goan polity and society provides

It is high time people like you grew up and started thinking. We are no longer

whole world knows the trouble in JK is NOT a Hindu-Muslim issue. It is a fight

centuries under upper Hindu castes. Has the sangh parivar ever held exhibitions

Brit held under Children’s Act

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, OCT 16 — Colva police on Tuesday arrested a 29-year old British
national under the Goa Children’s Act for keeping a minor laamani boy at his
Apartment at Colva.

The young foreign national had checked into a holiday apartment at Colva
recently and had kept the 12-year-old minor boy in the house, offering to
educate him.

Colva PI Edwin Colaco informed that the police acted based on a complaint,
adding, that the foreigner had no right to house the young boy with him without
completing the necessary formalities.

Preliminary police investigations show that the foreigner had reportedly met
the boy’s uncle at Khareband and sought his permission to keep the boy at his
house for the purpose of education.

Taking no chances, the Colva police have sent both the boy and the foreigner
for medical examination.

Roland,

Firstly...thanks for your comments on my mail. I would say update your
knowledge on Goan politics a bit. Having done that, i would think you are a
Sardinha sympathiser. Well if that serves you...its your choice.

I know Sardinha personally, so also Dr Wilfred Misquita, but then... in the
current dispensations...I guess none of them is worthy of my vote. The
|Congress betrayed Goans...the BJP hurt Goans, specially the minorities.

I am aware of much ground realities of curtorim constituency as my mother hails
from there...Sardinha never allowed young leaders to come up. Also he was also
trounced by Antonio Gaonkar in the 1990s...if you recollect. I accept your
views that defeat and wins are part of elections. I was actively involved in
college level politics, i won a record 5 elections out of five and was also
felicitated for that...two were unopposed, i held posts like chairman of the
council and the general secretary of the council. And we revolutionised the
college and had many firsts..but that some other day!

Well in the recent years the elections in Goa r fought bet the congress and the
bjp...see how the devil is trying to quote the scriptures this time...I mean
the BJP or Parrikar trying to put up a christao candidate in South, knowing
very well that the minority vote bank is quite sizeable. I am sure like many
others including your very own sardinha, it is yet another politician
Parriker/BJP will used and discard...ask dotor Willy, Babush.. etc.

I grew up observing Eduardo Faleiro...his dynamism and his presence, his
writings and speeches in summits as far away in Portugal...I have a personally
signed copy of his first book, 'From the Floor'...India lacked good and dynamic
leaders like Eduardo,..he was examplary! I even remember putting up his posters
at elections while i was associated with politics in Goa then...and most of his
victories were agains the MGP...the Late MS prabhu being one of them...I
remember that partularly as the campaign tag for the MGP then was a poster
around a literally starved looking replica of a LION which said MS for LS. MS
lost his deposite against a Congress wave.

As for Babush...although he is made a big scapegoat for the RP and other
allegations, nothing has been proved yet. And if he was bad, y would the Aam
Aadmi oriented Congress touch him?

[Goanet] Hague Apostille {IMPORTANT}.

2007-10-17 Thread Swastik

Dears;

India has started to issue Haque apostille with effect from August, 2007. As
the Haque convention clearly abolishes the requirement of legalization of
foreign documents. (i.e the documents created or originating in a country
which is a party of this PARTICULAR CONVENTION irrespective of the fact
being a non-member state of the Haque Conference need not be legalized by
embassy/consulate for producing in that country).

As stiplulated in
http://hcch.e-vision.nl/index_en.php?act=status.commentcsid=929disp=type
Portugal has raise an objection after the given time limit for filing
objections and hence this objection has been OVERRULED by the haque
commitee.

We all need to know that whether documents bearing haque apostille given by
india shall be recognized by CRC and at several applicable places in
portugal or NOT? Or is it the consular or embassy legalization/attestation
still mandatory.

If YES, then it clearly violates the international law of the Haque
convention.

Comments and facts prevailing invited.

Shashikant.

2007-10-17 Thread Aniruddha Sen Gupta
Hi,

I'd posted this a couple of days after my initial
post, but it never showed up on Goanet. I waited a few
days, and thought it's better I send it again.

To wind up my story about our interrupted morning
walk, my wife Anjali and I drove around the area
looking for our friend in need, and did end up
locating the red Sumo on a small side road (luckily
for us, the area which we were searching was
relatively unpopulated, and we spotted the car from
some distance away).

When we got there, the man we were seeking was not at
home, having gone to drop his elder child to school
(he had been returning from the same errand the day
before when he ran into us). While we waited for him,
his little son brought out a little yellow car which
was obviously a prized new possession. No matter that
the doors came away in his hands, or that one
headlight was smashed – what car doesn’t have such
flaws?

When the child’s father returned, he was quite
astonished to see us. His name, we found out, is
Mohammed Ayub Motiwala. A three-wheeler tempo and the
Sumo in question constitute his main source of
livelihood. It was as fulfilling for us to have found
him as it must have been for him to be able to help
someone in need.

I really do not know how you manage to be so articulate despite the anger

given the change, they will celebrate every atrocity committed since the

Last week, we had elections here in Ontario. Seems like the politicians here
borrowed from Goa's politicians. The conservative party decided to concentrate
their campaign on the promise of providing funding to religious schools (of all

Guess whose idea was more popular? Speaking of which, since Goans have long

religious holidays from them?

[Goanet] Archbishop Gracias appointed Cardinal

2007-10-17 Thread Goanet News Service

Archbishop Gracias appointed Cardinal

PANJIM, OCT 17 - Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday appointed Oswald Gracias,
Archbishop of Bombay, as Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Most Rev. Gracias -- a native of Orlim -- is the fourth Cardinal of Goan
origin, after Cardinal Valerian Gracias of Bombay, Cardinal Joseph Cordeiro
of Karachi and Cardinal Ivan Dias of Bombay.

Archbishop Gracias and 22 other prelates from different parts of the world,
who were appointed Cardinals by Pope Benedict, will be created cardinals in
a consistory on November 24, the eve of the Feast of Christ the King.

Following the November 24 consistory, the College of Cardinals will number
202 members of whom 121, under the age of 80, will be electors.

Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman has rejoiced in the appointment
of Archbishop Gracias as a Cardinal of the Universal Church.

We offer him warm felicitations as well as to the Church in Bombay, which
he so ably leads. This Archdiocese wishes the fourth Son of Goa to enter the
College of Cardinals God's special blessings to carry out his outstanding
service to the Church in India and worldwide, stated a press note issued by
Fr J Loiola Pereira, Director of the Diocesan Centre for Social
Communications Media.

Archbishop Gracias was born on December 24, 1944 and was ordained a priest
on December 20, 1970. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Bombay on June
28, 1997, before being elevated as Archbishop of Agra on September 7, 2000.
He was then appointed as archbishop of Bombay on October 14, 2006,
succeeding Cardinal Ivan Dias, who was named in May 2006 as president of the
Vatican Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.

Re: [Goanet] Membership Of Goa Suraj

Roland,
Thank you for your queries.

I shall answer each of your queries as below:

- Original Message -
From: Roland Francis [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! goanet@lists.goanet.org

Subject: [Goanet] Membership Of Goa Suraj

 Floriano,
Is it allowed for disapora Goans especially those who are foriegn
nationals to become members of the Goa Suraj and contribute to the fee
 for party membership?

GSRP: No.
BTW: Pls note the name of the party is Su-Raj and not Suraj. The former
means 'Good Governance' where Su means Good in Sanscrit Language and Raj
means governance in any language. The later means the 'Sun' in the Hindi
Language.

What about foreign nationals who are also Indian citizens. Is it
necessary to prove that you are an Indian PIO or citizen before you
can contribute and/or pay membership dues?

GSRP: Not certain. Will check-out

If there are no such restrictions, there may be many Goans in the
disapora who are willing to canvass memberships for you and become
members of the party. At Rs 300 annually or less than CAD 10 a pop, it
won't hurt our pockets and it might do your party much good.

GSRP: Correction: Membership (Life or Ordinay) is a one-time affair.

 Roland.

GSRP likes to make a note here. Large membership helps the concerned
party morally and ideologically. There is nothing like it if the party has a
million members. But winning or losing elections has no bearing on the
membership, though it will help the party financially somewhat. Steadfastly
supporting the party's ideology (it's raison d'etre) by vast number of
people, not necessarily members of the party is more important than a large
membership. This party welcomes life members. But it does not go out of the
way looking for them. We believe that those who want to belong to the party
will come to it on their own and by so doing will remain with it for
lifetime. To us that is more sensible and important than a million members
who do not have their heart in the party and its programmes. Financial help
i.e financing our projects, on the other hand is always welcome with due
thanks.

[Goanet] This Dussehra, Hindus will have to miss out on gun worship

This Dussehra, Hindus will have to miss out on gun
worship

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, OCT 17 — This Dussehra festival, firearm owners from South Goa —
especially from the Hindu community — will have to literally forego traditional
worship of their weapons.

For, most of the fire arms stand deposited at the police stations across the
district as per directives of the district Magistrate in view of the October 31
bye-polls.

Most of the owners have already deposited their arms with the police,
restricting their access to their guns. And, if the police are to be believed,
the owners cannot gain access to the weapons as the arms are deposited as per
orders from the District Magistrate.

“Once fire arms are deposited upon instructions from the district Magistrate,
the owners cannot gain access to the arms, unless permitted by the licensing
authority”, maintained Sub-divisional Police Officer, Margao DySP Umesh
Gaonkar.

He said unless there are any directions from the District Magistrate, who is an
authority to issue arms licenses, the police cannot give access to the owners
on the Dussehra day to worship their arms.

When contacted, Assistant Electoral Officer, Venancio Furtado said it’s for the
District Magistrate and the Returning Officer to decide on the matter. He,
however, feigned ignorance whether any request has come from any firearm owner,
seeking permission to worship firearms on Dussehra day — which falls on Sunday.

[Goanet] BJP will solve Mopa issue: Mesquita

BJP will solve Mopa issue: Mesquita

BY HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, OCT 16 – The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the parliamentary
election in South Goa Dr Wilfred Mesquita on Tuesday said he had full faith the
party will find a ‘‘suitable solution’’ to the Mopa airport issue.

Dr Mesquita, who was addressing the media, at BJP headquarters disclosed that
he had spoken at length the issue pertaining to scrapping of Mopa airport with
the BJP leadership before joining the national outfit.

To a question, he reiterated his stand for scrapping Mopa airport and expressed
confidence that the BJP leadership would agree with his views. Interestingly,
BJP has always taken a pro-Mopa stand and in the past some of their leaders had
even criticized anti-Mopa agitation.

Opposition to SEZs, the 6-lane Expressway and the Town and Country Planning Act
are the other issues on Dr Mesquita’s agenda.

Replying to queries, the former revenue minister in the Rane government said he
was received well by the BJP when he joined the party a day before he filed his
nomination.

“Even I was surprised at first to get such warm welcome, which I did not
expect,” he said before continuing “I know nothing about the infighting in the
party over my candidature.”

Speaking about his divorce with the regional outfit – Save Goa Front (SGF) of
which he was a founder member, Dr Mesquita claimed SGF was formed, with the
help of Churchill Alemao, for fighting the Congress on certain issues.

“We were fighting against the Congress on issues which were in public interest,
however, at the assembly polls we did not get people’s mandate though we just
got managed to get enough votes to be a recognised as a state party,” he said.

Thereafter, Mr Alemao took a different stand and supported Congress thus we had
no other choice than to leave the party, he said.

About joining BJP, he said, the issues he was fighting could not be taken up
sitting at home and had to join some big party.

Re: [Goanet] Defamation of HJS FACT Exibition

2007-10-17 Thread Sachin Phadte

In his message, Vidyadhar Gadgil says that Communalism Combat has taken up the
issue of the Kashmiri Pandits. A friend of mine subscribes to the publication,
and I am afraid I do not find myslef in agreement with Vidyadhar on this. Yes,
they have some articles on the subject - but what is the rule and what is the
exception? Another friend says that he questions the sincerity of the editors
of Communalism Combat on the basis of what he has heard them say in public
meetings.

Again, the issue is really not whether the Sangh has done anything for the
Kashmiri Pandits or whether Communalism Combat has done anything for them. It
is what Vidyadhar had said in response to a message from me, namely: Of
course, their plight must be addressed. Meaningful solutions must be found.

I would like to know from Vidyadhar exactly what these meaningful solutions
are. He has said that Communalism Combat has written many articles on this. To
test the sincerity of the editors, and prove my friend wrong (which I dearly
want to do), can he post an article from the publication where a meaningful
solution has been proposed. To the point of sounding like a broken record, I
would like to once again mention that the Pandits have been suffering since
1989, that is for the last 18 years.

I was also intrigued by the quote from a Communalism Combat editorial, namely:
Whenever Communalism Combat is blamed for being 'too pro-minority', we hold
the Sangh Parivar and the rest of the saffron brotherhood responsible for this
editorial 'tilt'.

Reminds me of a joke where a person says that he has very responsible position
in his organisation - he is held responsible for all that is going wrong in it.
:-)

On a serious note, does this quote not disprove Vidyadhar's contention about
the concern of Communalism Combat with respect to the Kashmiri Pandits?

Hi Mr. Cedric,

Your post reflects echoes the views of many Goans; be they resident here,

endorse what Mr. Floriano Lobo has said on the need for party funds. I
definitely do not think that greater monetary power with a party is going to
ensure the well being of society, I will not elaborate as Mr. Lobo as summed
it up in the best possible way.
Writing letters is excellent. And I have nothing to say about you speaking
from Dubai, many of us have compulsions that force us to go elsewhere.
Letters present interesting viewpoints that might not always strike all our
minds. (but I have to mention that I did not like the tone/content of your
criticism of the Goa Suraj Party). A social revolution in Goa atleast, will
not come overnight. But the attempts need to be ongoing. Education is a
strong means. Participation of youth at the panchayat level, gram sabhas,
greater awareness toward govt policy etc needs to be undertaken by the
youth. I think we can expect change in that way. As far as the issue of
votes is concerned, well, blame the large Goan faithful. But I believe very
strongly this will change one day, because (even though in a small way),
there are groups that are working towards bringing change.

best,

Joseph de Melo

Dear Floriano,

Firstly, although being away from Goa, I will be well versed on many a
ground realities happening in Goa than many a sussegad Goenkar based in
Goa...that credit i will give myself. If you have been reading my posts on
Goanet, 'Uncensored' in Goan Observer and Herald (of course they banned me
when i put an open letter against Digamber Kamat, titled...Margao's
Suffocating Judas, that highlighted Margao's ailing plight and the rampant
migration problem that Margao facesmy thoughts were right but somehow,
people in power dont like highlighting the ills of their constituency).

Why would I waste my precious time to highlight Goan issues, being
comfortably based in the Gulf? the answer is simple -- having born and bred
in a Goa of yesteryears...my heart will always be with my motherland...one
day I will come back to it...but unfortunately it lies in shambles today --
thanks to the politicians of today.

Although i think you should do a rethink and try and organise funds for your
party cause without which in the current political ringto win...is
like...wishful thinking even in the next twenty years if your party lasts
that long with the current think-tank. The ground reality is many regional
parties die a natural or slow death all over the world due to paucity of
funds and that is a given fact, although some of them have better agenda's
than most of the big parties put together...we are in the era where no
matter what, money has to flow to win an election, specially when we are
competing against huge money bags and regional parties. If money was not a
criteria, why would the elected representatives let out a reign of loot and
plunder, ofcourse part of it spent on getting themselves re-elected.

But anyways, as a fellow Goan I passionately and wholeheartedly subscribe to
your thought to cleanse Goa of all that it is going through.

Imagine we are suffering so much due to rampant corruption abetted by the
politicians...imagine again the state of Goa that our children will inherit.

Just a small thought i would like to share...on filing his nomination see
what issues Francisco Sardinha a senior politician said...instead of trying
to improve infrastructure or say trying to support the next big industry --
tourism...his comments smacked so much immaturity...so one can
imagine...what lies ahead...

None of the current MLA's or Ministers nor even the Aam AAdmi chanting CM
have the future of Goa in their mindall they think of is live for, or
survive for the day...arn't they?

Goans should be trained in the art of grabbing all the monies and freebees
that the national parties give them, but while voting elect honest people
like say your party would put up. But with the huge migrant vote...once
again money plays a huge part.

At the last election, I personally waited for one of his opponents (you
included) to destroynot defeat... but destroy a narkasur like Dayanand
Narvenkar...but what happened is what we all saw...but maybe in the years to
come...Good luck there!

Wish you luck maite and your organisation...May Goemcho Saib, bless it!

Regards
