DLF, Hilton plan first branded residential hotel in Goa 12 Jan, 2008, 0242 hrs IST,Vishakha Talreja & Rajat Guha, TNN NEW DELHI: Residential hotels are all set to debut in India. Such hotels combine the flexibility of a vacation home with the service of a hotel. Real estate developer, DLF will soon come up with India's first branded residential hotel with the Hilton Group in Goa. The 200-room hotel with 80 villas that will be sold out as vacation homes on lease-back basis, will be operational in three years. DLF plans to have six hotels on similar format in five years. "India has upgraded from medium-rung houses to premium apartments. But in the hotel industry that kind of shift is yet to happen," says Siddharth Thaker, associate director, HVS International, a hotel consultancy. With residential hotels that shift in the hotel industry will finally happen. Such hotels provide buyers an opportunity to invest in a property on sale-and-lease-back basis. Dear Bonifacio, As I have written in my post, Dr. Oscar Rebello is against becoming an ICON because the aim of the GBA itself is to EMPOWER THE PEOPLE. When Oscar receives ANYTHING as a Convenor of the GBA , he accepts it ON BEHALF of the GBA and the PEOPLE OF GOA. No two ways about that. A simple illustration will help [not specifically for you, but to all who do not yet know]. Dr.Oscar Rebello was selected as the Convenor of GBA to receive the Vicente Xavier Verodiano Award [funded by Dom Martin and selected by a committee under Adv. Norma Alvares]. Three things happened: 1. Dr. Oscar Rebello insisted that he would receive the award ONLY if other GBA members received it along with him. 2. The VXV Award was received by more than half a dozen GBA Core Group members. [In fact, some of the newspapers quoted my ad lib acceptance speech on behalf of the "People of Goa" and not Dr. Oscar's] and 3. The Award money of Rs.1.00 lakh was deposited in the GBA account [not Dr. Oscar's] in the bank and is being used to fund documentation, banners, posters, etc about ODPs, SEZ, Aldeia de Goa etc. The "Indian of the Year" Award is for INDIVIDUALS. The giver decides the criteria, not the receiver [except if one wants to refuse an award entirely]. For example, a contestant was debarred fromthe Gladrags award when it was found out that she was married, though she was pretty and pretty smart. Similar things happen to sportswomen with high level of testesterone. GBA is not an Individual. Goa is not an Individual. The award is for an individual. Bonefacio-bab, nobody will call you a hypocrite and some of the thoughts you have expressed are shared by me and some others. He has a long way to go ...and I may add a tricky and thorny path to thread BUT he has already done a lot. Let us acknowledge that. The people of Goa have already done that. Dr. Oscar is the face of the GBA. The GBA is an inspiration for the Goan masses, it is the magic that EMBOLDENS the people from Pernem to Pololem. and this [not the GBA per se] frightens the political lobbies [not just the politicians]. GBA is the soul of the SVM though its body is made of local level groups fighting each SEZ. The CSJP is the heart of the SVM. Let us acknowlege the mind, body and soul in the true spirit of freedom. These are my humble views for the consideration of all. It is yours [each one's] to decide ... and act as per your decision. As I have written elsewhere, for everthing else there is Woodwards' Gripe Water! ;-) Mog asundi. Miguel P.S. Perhaps the fist person to vote for Dr. Oscar Rebello is Dr. Joe D'Souza, former Head of Microbiology Dept., member of various Government Committees and columnist of oHeraldo. Dr. Oscar has my vote, too. His account is building up. No problem if he does not win. the fact that he is nominated as CONVENOR OF GBA is recognition enough for us and the work we do. Together Everyone Achieves More. That is the T.E.A.M. spirit we need in Goa . all of us are learning it. Miguel Goa should have authority over its waters: Cabinet BY HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, JAN 11 — "Goa is a full-fledged State, not a Union Territory and as such it cannot be denied the authority over the State's territorial waters", was the tone of ministers at the Cabinet meeting held today while discussing the issue of MPT's jurisdiction over State's waters. Sources said Cabinet members felt that the water areas particularly along the riverine stretches over which MPT claims jurisdiction, has witnessed development and if State has no jurisdiction over the areas then it might lead to confusion and conflicts. Moreover, it was pointed out that the State has its own minor (Panjim) port which is in operation. Members were also of the view that MPT could retain only few water areas around the port. The Cabinet took a decision to take up the issue with the Union Ministry of Ports and to present a strong case to get the notification amended. A notification published some time ago, said "all the water areas of River Zuari, west of Agacaim-Cortalim ferry (excluding the ferry and the landing stages), along the villages of Agacaim (Mercurim), Goa Velha, Siridao, Bambolim, Cacara, Nauxim, Odxel, Vainguinim, Dona-Paula on the North, Cortalim, Sancoale, Dabolim, Chicalim, Vasco-da-Gama on the South as well as the sea front at Sada, Baina, Bogmalo, Chicolna, Issorcim, Velsao, Cansaulim, Arrossim, and Utorda, the Islands of Piqueno, Grande, etc and the specified areas of Betul, fall within the limits of Port of Mormugao…" When questioned recently during his visit to Goa last week, the Union Minister for Ports T R Baalu defended the stand of MPT saying the State has no authority over the territorial waters. It was his view that the State has no role to play as the jurisdiction of the above places was with the Centre after Goa was Liberated and subsequently handed over to the Mormugao Port Trust after the Port Trust Act was enacted in 1963. Two ministers objected to including specific areas of Betul in the limits of MPT and suggested that State government should construct a minor port there. -- -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. Over 200 real estate projects on display India property show opens KUWAIT: An all-India property exhibition got off to a colorful start yesterday at the Ramada Hotel, Kuwait showcasing more than 200 Indian real estate projects under one roof. Dinesh Bhatia, Charge DAffairs, Indian Embassy, inaugurated the exhibition. In addition to the presence of some of the biggest names in the Indian real estate industry, major housing finance institutions are also participating in the exhibition to provide on the spot loan facilities. It is great idea to organize such an Indian property exhibition in Kuwait in view of the presence of a large Indian expatriate community in Kuwait, said Bhatia after touring various pavilions at the exhibition. Let our people know more about the booming real estate market in India. It is not only an investment option. But, it could help many expatriates realize their dream to build a home of their own, Bhatia pointed out. The event is being conducted by Indus Fairs & Events (India) Pvt Ltd in association with Danat Al-Sultan, Kuwait. The exhibition is an ideal platform for NRI investors who look for investment opportunities in the Indian real estate sector. Visitors get first hand information on upcoming and current real estate projects and a wide range of property options, said one of the exhibitors at the venue. On display are diverse properties and the best financing options from banks so that customers can shop for their dream home with least effort and maximum convenience. With strong foreign exchange reserves, healthy GDP growth rates, rupee appreciation, strong corporate performance and expanding FII investments, India has emerged as an economic powerhouse. Most significantly, the $12 billion real estate market in India has been on a high growth trajectory, on the back of a booming economy, increased participation of global players in the Indian market, new technological innovations, new norms and policies with respect to maintenance of buildings, the general upgradation of infrastructure, entry of many world-class players in the hospitality and entertainment sectors, favorable demographics and liberalized FDI regime. According to latest data, the real estate sector is the second largest employer in India. The sector is projected to grow at an average rate of 20 percent per annum to $50 billion by 2010. And investment opportunity is expected over $50 billion in the next five years. The Indian real estate industry has a lot of potential to offer. Various foreign real estate and financial institutions companies have entered the Indian market. Moreover, 100 percent FDI is allowed in real estate development, said another exhibitor pointing out that the Indian government has played a major role in supporting the growth of the real estate sector by allowing NRI investment in the sector. In Indias fast-growing economy, real estate has emerged as one of the most appealing investment areas for domestic as well as foreign investors. The real estate sector will continue to derive its growth from the booming IT sector, since an estimated 70 per cent of the new construction is for the IT sector, a report released by PriceWaterhouse Coopers has said. The real estate market is on an upswing and for NRIs in this region. This is the right time to invest in properties back home. The property show being held offers the customers a wide choice with the best deals possible, said an exhibitor. The property exhibitions organized previously by Indus group in Dubai had done business worth 100 crores and generated sales enquiries of more than 300 crores. The event recently held in Muscat had done business transactions worth more than 80 crores and generated sales enquiries more than 700 crores. If the visitor turnout and growing enquiries are any indication, the exhibition in Kuwait is expected to surpass all estimates. Goa`s seething undercurrents Sunil Sethi / New Delhi January 12, 2008 Under Goa's pellucid blue skies, rippling green paddies and waving palms, there are other threatening signals of how the development debate, even in a prosperous and cosmopolitan state, can take dangerous turns. A strong sense of regionalism is growing into a seething undercurrent of Goa-for-Goans. The unchecked construction, soaring land prices and increased migration of recent years are making Goans question the motives of outsiders buying large tracts of land and turning their state into a playground of the rich and famous. Whereas everyone from Jade Jagger to Lord Meghnad Desai may want to own a small piece of Goa, poor construction labour is mostly from Bihar and eastern UP. And the old story of building sites creating slums and slums turning into vote banks is beginning to exercise Goa's strongly integrated village communities with their communidade lands, property held in trust by the panchayats, which politicians lust after greedily. More and more Goans are asking why, if states like Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal have strict legislation against outsiders buying property, why shouldn't Goa? Each time I return to Goa I try and pay a visit to an old and honoured friend, the cartoonist and illustrator Mario Miranda in his beautiful 18th century family home in a quiet village in the deep south. This time I noticed a change in the hallowed exteriors of the wonderful old house where so much personal history has been lovingly preserved for generations. Elegantly designed grillwork now covers the many windows and doors of the two-storey mansion. "Goans had a tradition of leaving their doors and windows wide open and I supposed it wouldn't change in my life," he said. "But when things change so fast, safety comes first." http://www.business-standard.com/common/storypage_c.php?leftnm=10&bKeyFlag=BO&autono=310465

Dear Miguel, It should be fairly straightforward to find out (through the public disclosure mechanisms established by the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act of Govt. of India) which organizations are receiving the most amount of foreign funds, and in what kind of work these entities are engaged. I would be surprised if any of them are using physical torture or threats to convert in this modern age. But I would have deep reservations about the ethical soundness of the following methods: 1. Providing material rewards with the understanding that some would convert out of gratitude. 2. Staging miracles and miraculous cures to dazzle credulous people into converting. 3. Preaching to the children of illiterate parents, and impressing upon their immature minds the positive spiritual consequences of converting and the negative spiritual consequences of not converting. 4. Gainfully employing (or bribing) men of authority (such as a chief or a village sarpanch) within illiterate tribal or village communities to warn people about the negative spiritual consequences of not converting. 5. Teaching children to read and write, and imparting knowledge about the natural world by using religious texts as textbooks. Roque Santana: man who wanted Goa free In the summer of 1927, Velim witnessed the birth of a unique baby boy who's parents named him 'Roque Santana.' The tragic death of his mother when he was very young resulted in his move to Bombay where he lived in a community apartment(refered to as "Koud"). At a very young age Roque Santana knew what he was called for - to fight for the liberation of his land. Influenced by his elder cousin Amarante D'costa and the speeches of Mahatma Gandhi to work for the freedom of Goa, Roque Santana's first contribution to Goa's Liberation came in Dec 1949, during Christmas holidays. While most teenagers of his age were busy helping their parents make Christmas sweets, Roque Santan was making preparations to sabotage the reception organized for the Portuguese Governor General, Capt Quintanilha Medonca Dias at the Indo -Portuguese Institute at Dhobitalao, Bombay. The then Portuguese Consul filed a criminal case against him and others in the Bombay Metropolitan Magistrate court for destroying a large size photograph of Dr Olivera Salazar. This was a courageous act undertaken by Roque Santana towards the liberation movement at a very young age. In 1950 Roque Santana was in Goa to carry on underground pro-liberation activities. He was arrested in Hotel Salcette Margao, while having lunch with his friends. The Portuguese Military court sentenced him to 20 months rigorous imprisonment to be spent in Aguada Jail. In June of 1952 he and four others headed in a borrowed car loaded with ammunition to conduct an attack on one of Chandor's Police depots. The plan was foiled due to the pro-Portuguese Goan elements who leaked the information to the Portuguese police, Roque Santana's accomplices and the car came under police cross fire which got him grievously injured. His survival was considered a miracle, but soon after his recovery he was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 18 years in solitary confinement in Aguada Jail. Roque Santana did not stop working for Goa after liberation. After liberation he worked with Goa's poor for equality, against caste system, corruption, etc. Santana was elected a Member of the legislative assembly for two consecutive terms for the then Cuncolim constituency. He was awarded a 'Tambra Patra.' A rare honour awarded to a handful of freedom fighters in the whole country. http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=7012&cid=26

I said that all human beings have the law in themselves, not without the activity of God in them. But the problem of sin is that of refusal of God's love or non-cooperation. Faith with knowledge is better. That is the reason why we have to proclaim the Truth, salvation by Jesus. It is always a 'narrow road', that of sacrifice for all, whether they are believers or atheists or agnostic. Sorry for not having given you the context of the above text: Paul is convicting everyone of sin, whether they are Jews or gentiles. The Jews have also the Decalogue, written on two stone tablets. The Gentiles have the law in their hearts. But if they do not glorify God, sinning against their ligth, they are convicted. All have fallen short of the Glory of God (cf.Rm 3:23). The internal process between God and the individuals is a mystery for us. We are speaking in principle (paradigmatically). You wrote: > Is it God's will that all people be saved? Yes! Of course, I agree, because > the Bible says so. But does that mean/imply that all will be saved? Hence everyone will be saved. *No, it is again the problem of our freedom. We have the power of rejecting God's love and commandments. That is the mystery of sin. < convenient approach, but to me it sounds very simplistic and incomplete > because it doesn't take into account all relevant scripture. *Not so simple. Christian life is very difficult, but God's Grace is always there. We are too selfish. That is the drama (or tragedy) of our lives. > You wrote: Here's what the Bible says about astrology: Isaiah 47: "Let your > astrologers come forward, those star-gazers who make predictions month by > month, let them save you from what is coming upon you. They did not find the text that you found... >Further, here it is not a question of astrology, but of finding the "star" >from Jacob (Nb 24:17). They found God in the nature and in the Scriptures. This is a 'foretelling' of the conversion of the Gentiles. <<1 Tim 2:4: "God wills all humankind to be saved and have a clear > knowledge of truth". Clear knowledge of the truth. What is truth? The > Truth > is Jesus Christ! See John 14:6. *Objectively, yes. For you and me, yes, not for those who have not come to know the Truth... >>>"Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through > no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without > which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation > and also the sacred right to evangelize all men." *The Church teaches it in the Catechism of Catholic Church, no.848. You should understand the background of the teaching of salvation of non-Christians. > But why do we have to evangelize all men if everyone's going to be saved, > anyway? *Already answered. Our duty is to proclaim. What about those who have not received that proclamation and live in good faith? >> Know Jesus, Know Life. No Jesus, No Life. *Therefore, we have the duty of proclaiming. All people have the duty of searching meaning for life and living according to their light. God does the rest.

The Kingdom of Sweden had a State Religion for five centuries, the Lutheran Church, as did three other Protestant nations in Europe. In a major turnaround, they have extended identical monetary support to ALL religions, for the last thirty years. About ten years ago, the Press in Sweden reported on the newly appointed Minister for Religion : he is the person who appoints Bishops and controls church pursestrings. It turned out that the man was not a Believer ! An incredulous King summoned the PM and sought an explanation. HM was not prepared for the answer : There were none in the Realm, he was told, in the ranks of the college educated ! The King then suggested he saw hypocrisy in a law that named him the head of a Church that apparently did not exist. The Minister agreed, a new law was drafted, and Sweden is now a secular State. The moral of this story : Perhaps there is something to be said for the many Gods of the world's oldest surviving religion. eric. - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Selma by not using names in her post is not displaying humor, but good judgement. This reflects her class. She needs to be complimented for a good decision. She, I and others, hope many others would emulate her. There has been an unprecedented level of attack and counter-attack. Making these attacks pointed by name, reflects poor decision-making. It is merely an attempt to drag others into responding to a post; which frankly does not deserve the dignity of a reply. Sachin Phadte === Orissa probes Maoist hand in violence Author: Himansu S. Sahoo, Bhubaneswar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Publication: Hindustan Times Dated: January 08, 2008 Intro: We are enquiring into the activities of foreign-funded NGOs as there are allegations of their Maoist links. They would be brought to the notice of the Judicial Commission. A K Tripathi, Orissa Chief Secretary After evidence of Maoist involvement in certain incidents of violence in Kandhamal district, the Orissa government has started enquiring the activities of several foreign-funded NGOs in the district and their alleged links with the Maoist groups. Chief secretary A.K. Tripathy on Monday told newsmen here, a high-level police enquiry has been ordered into the attack on Brahmanigaon police station in the district on December 27. After the recovery of 12 unlicensed guns from the village it has become evident that that the attack was the handiwork of the Left Wing Extremists and not the mob involved in the communal tension. "As part of the police investigation into Brahmanigaon incident we are enquiring into the activities of foreign funded NGOs as there are allegations of their links with the Maoists. The allegations would also be brought to the notice of the Judicial Commission which is going to start its enquiry into the Kandhamal communal tension shortly," the chief secretary said. In the aftermath of the Kandhamal communal violence certain organisations including the VHP had alleged about the diversion of foreign funds received by NGOs and Christian missionaries to the Maoist groups. VHP state general secretary Gouri Prasad Rath said, "We strongly believe that the Maoist groups in Kandhamal are being funded by Christian missionaries and several NGOs who receive huge amount of foreign funds for their operations in the district. I just loved to read the article - C'est la economie..S'il vous plaint - that appeared in GT, for I love that language. But as I continued reading, I felt my Oxygen supply is getting cut off! The phrase which Oscar quoted was tossed up by presidential advisor & political strategist in James Carville, the highly regarded Democratic political operative from Louisiana's bayou country, which helped keep the 1992 Clinton campaign in focus and "on message" with a simple four-word phrase - It's the economy, stupid. To me his misquote appears to be his typo error (I consider it before he say's so) or may be ...another Task Force gimmick...or...? Have a re-look to his post in GT. Check how Oscar starts his article with CATCHY TITLE . and has he continues further he appears confused? He even forgot that, today American's, especially working class, are uneasy about the economy, and they are up in arms telling Bush at White House (with rephrased phrase): "It's the TAX hike, stupid!" Having expressed this, Oscar's confused mind, confused thinking, and or his typo mistakes - what ever it may be - has created waves, speculations, raising unwanted question marks all over Goa. Any way Goans will have to be watchful on --who says what? Nevertheless, it's interesting to take this phrase further and check it's applicability to Goa! Today in Goa, the prices of every thing - Roti, Kapda and Makan including Goan favorite FISH - the basic requirements of Aam Admi - are shooting sky high day by day! Why? Did any one paid attention to this issue? Why at all a politician should decide even what Fish Goans should be eating tomorrow and at what price? Well, friends, all this is happening at the command and blessings of our favorite Congress MLAs and Congress Ministers. Congress regime, for past 2 - 3 years, has created mess in economic security, health, housing affordability, environmental sustainability, and cultural vitality. They have not only influenced and screwed our democratic participation and public policies but compelled Aam Admi come on roads in 2007. In reality, Economy should have been the servant of society, but these politicians have changed the meaning of economy upside down and made society the servant of the economy! Above statements have been picked up by me from what I heard at GBA meetings during Regional Plan agitations, where GBA members had literarily washed congressmen using CORRUPTION soap! Same statements were also heard during anti-SEZ agitations of both the groups!!! And also during IT Park agitation Some of our Goanet members were also vocal on CORRUPTION charges against Congress regime during one or other agitations that shook Goa upside down in the year 2007! OR should I say 2008 is going to be an ERA of CHEMELIONS & CORRUPTION - quick bunks & quick fucks!! Friends, at the end of the day its THE FACT prevailing in Goa for which I have every reason to rephrase the original phrase of James Carville and say: IT'S CONGRESS POLITICIANS, STUPID; ITS CONGRESSMEN, STUPIED; IT'S CONGRESS SUPPORTERS, STUPID; its... Riots In Orissa By Angana Chatterji 07 January, 2008 Asian Age December 25 2007: Seven churches, Catholic, Protestant, Pentacostal, Independent ... burned in Barakhama village, Kandhamal district, central Orissa. December 23, 2007: Hindutva (Hindu supremacist ideology) affiliated Adivasi (tribal) organisations organised a march, rallying, "Stop Christianity. Kill Christians." A Dalit (formerly "untouchable" groups) Christian leader testified, "We went to the local police and informed them of the situation. They assured us that things would be under control. On December 24, in the daytime, we heard voices of Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Shiv Sena people, chanting, 'Hindu, Hindu, Bhai, Bhai'; 'RSS Zindabad'; 'Lakshmanananda Zindabad.' They shut down shops. That night they felled trees to block roads, severed power and phone lines. On the 25th, we went to the inspector-in-charge of police again. On the 25th, at 2.30, about 200 of us sat down to Christmas prayer at our church, and around 4 p.m. we heard the mob approach." The mob, about 4,000 persons, many bearing symbolic tilaks (religious mark on forehead), belonged to various Sangh Parivar (Hindu nationalist, militant) groups, named above, inciting local Hindus into rioting. Estimates state 20 per cent of the mob comprised people from Barkahama, 80 per cent from surrounding Baliguda, Raikia, Phulbani, as far away as Beherampur. "They broke the door to our church. We ran. We fell and kept running." Women and men were intimidated and assaulted. Cries rent the air. "Christians must become Hindu or die. Kill them. Kill them. Kill them. Gita not Bible. Destroy their faith." The crowd carried rods, trishuls, swords. They used guns, a first in Orissa. Predominantly middle class caste Hindus participated in looting, destroying and torching property. Handmade bombs started the fires. Breakage was systematic. Women and men hid for days in forests, later seeking shelter in Baliguda town relief camp, returning to decimated Barakhama on January 2. Engulfed in soot and sorrow, people attempted to function amid charred remnants. A woman said, "Everything burns down and we are left with nothing. How little our lives are made (of). How alone we are, so far away from everything." In Baliguda, in one church, furniture was dragged out, lit into a grotesque sculpture. The private violated in public, made spectacle. A Catholic church burnt, opposite the street the fire station witnessed the incident, but did not intervene. A cow, dragged from a shed, set afire, was beaten to death, identified as "Christian." Targeted: Bammunigaon, Bodagan, Daringbari, Goborkutty, Jhinjirguda, Kamapada, Kulpakia, Mandipanka, Nuagaon, Phulbani, Pobingia, Sindrigaon, Ulipadaro villages. Convents, presbytery, hostels, a minor seminary, vocational training centre. Organisational offices, as that of World Vision. Two churches in Chakapad. Christian religious services were not permitted in Phulbani. A Hindutva mob surrounded Tikabali police station, two jeeps were torched. Independent investigators charge that the violence was planned, that the police had prior knowledge of Hindutva groups' intent to riot. The pertinent district collector and superintendent of police have been transferred, not discharged. A Judicial Review Commission (JRC) chaired by a former (not sitting) judge has been appointed by the government of Orissa to investigate the riots. Its power or legitimacy is in question. The Central government did not appoint an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation, even as it is apparent that the very administration that failed to contain the riots and delayed deploying adequate forces, and whose officials at the district level may have been involved in its execution, cannot administer justice. Hindutva activists have lobbied the JRC to organise its terms of reference premised on the claim that an attack on Lakshmanananda Saraswati, a Hindu proselytiser, by Christians in Bammunigaon started the riots. This timeline is falsified. Sources state Hindutva groups planned Christmas day strikes, organised vandalism of Christmas symbols, and incited rioting. Christians in one area responded with reciprocal, not proportionate, violence. Dominant rationale reduces this to majority vs minority communalism. Rather than focus on systematic targeting of Christians, their overwhelmingly peacef

To Goanet - * Press Release Friday, Jan 11, 2008: Goas Movement Against SEZs (GMAS) is shocked that the Goan security guards employed at the Goa Assembly Complex, Kadamba Transport Corporation, Goa Medical College (and we do not know where else in Goa) have been replaced by Hindi-speaking security personnel from Orissa, U.P., W. Bengal etc. It was the former Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane who was hell bent on bringing SEZs to the state in the name of the Goan unemployed. The sacking of Goan security personnel manning these 3 centres and their replacement by non-Goans hired by a non-Goan company is proof that Rane is not interested in the welfare of the Goan people. GMAS demands to know why the local security guards have been sacked and replaced by non-Goans when our Goan employees are very much capable and not susegad at all which is a slogan used to deride Goans. It is well known that all government jobs today at every level are given for a price. Was there a price paid for these security jobs, too? GMAS also demands to know whether these non-Goans who were recruited were tested for their knowledge of the local language. Those responsible for displacing the local security guards must know that this act of theirs is anti-Goan as the families of these Goan youth are now deprived of a breadwinner. It must be noted that the politicians responsible for sacking the Goan employees have lost all rights to talk of the unemployed Goans as they themselves are responsible to denying job opportunities to the local people. GMAS calls upon such representatives to resign in shame. Matanhy Saldanha Convener * Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Hi Carmo Thanks for informing me that you were well and truly indoctrinated at your primary school. Some would refer to this as being thoroughly brainwashed! I would not wish such indoctrination on young kids. I would prefer to allow older kids and young adults to choose from a number of faiths only if they want to. On another point, I would not call skill acquisition and ability in hockey as an education. For me, an education is something you have gained after forgetting most of what you learned at school. Above all, education is about independent critical thinking. Perhaps you might indicate why, possibly, you disagree with my views above. I don't think my own early education was significantly different from yours but the outcomes do seem to be rather different and I value what I have. Dear Rajan, Appearances are deceptive or , if you prefer it in Konkani, "Dista toxem aso-na tem. Dongor pois thaun sazre, lagim thaun kazre" The "Goan" security guards are from the PETS like system of Goa Contract Labour Society created during BJP rule in Goa and still headed by a BJP man [No prizes for guessing who is the President of the labour Society]. If anyone expects Rane to be comfortable with such "Security" in the Goa Assembly at a time when [according to Dr.Carmo da Cruz] Parikar is trying to become CM again, one only has to see a clipping of what happened in the Goa Assembly when Manohar Parrikar was the CM and Filipe Neri Rodrigues was physically pulled out of the main hall by policeman dressed as Marshals. While I would love for Goans to be employed in Goa, this particular is hardly the place to begin it. The BIS is a professional outfit headed by ex-Servicemen who have fought to defend India and whose colleagues liberated Goa in 1961. Yes, the same type of "ghattis" like Ram Manohar Lohia , Gen. K.P.Candet and other persons detested by the likes of Rajan and other xenophobics. The Kala Academy, the Goa University and other institutions are guarded by BIS for many years. Oh! I understand it is inconvenient for Parrikar not to have his merry men in charge of security at the Gao Assembly complex from this session onwards. But what is Rajan's problem? Why does it not agitate him that D-Link employs 90 percent ghatti employees while its head honcho in Goa talks about 80 percent "local" employees in SEZ of Raheja's which is not in his control ...or the Goa Government's for that matter. ;-) To his advantage, I cannot ask Rajan where he was all these years, specially during the BJP era. I know he was abroad ...as an out-migrant from Goa and India. "Indi" perhaps ...but not ghatti ! ;-) I will not call him that. To amcho Goycho pao, murre ;-) Mog asundi. Dear Fr Ivo I agree with your words below that, there is 'racism' even in Europe but would add that with legislation (with teeth) and anti-racist education, it is receding. You may be interested in the sociological evidence that the more religious are generally more 'racist'. Also, that Eastern European Catholics harbour a lot of 'racism' that, gets exported to say the UK where labour requirements are high. And of course we simply must not forget a) the irony of well entrenched 'racism' of Catholic Goan casteism that is now finding its way, virtually as an export, to parts of Europe like Portugal via the Portuguese passport route and b) the evidence that, in my generosity, I would refer to as 'unconscious' 'racism' in what Catholic Goans and others in Goa say, often in an avuncular way, about out groups like the 'lower castes' (by name) and migrants etc. Even worse is when they try to justify it! In sum, my contention is that 'racism' of the many kinds around can never be right or justified---there can never be excuses for 'racism'. Sincerely Cornel DaCosta. "Fr. Ivo da C. The Mormugao Parliamentary Constituency Member of Parliament Mr Francisco Sardinha won the November, 2007 bye election on one of the several promises viz re-introduction of bull fights popularly known as "Dhirio" in the State . This was hitherto banned by a High Court directive; and despite this the sport continued on a sly sometimes with political patronage and the police looking the other way, especially in the home turf of another "dhirio" lover the Minister for Tourism, where an infuriated crowd of onlookers attacked the police who tried to prevent the event. But now there is further bad news which may dampen the spirits of "Dhirio" lovers and the MP too. In a recent order of the Supreme Court just two day before the Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu the "Jalikatu" bull fight traditional game almost akin to our "dhirio ' has been banned on grounds of cruelty to animals. It may be noted that two days after "Pongal" a harvest festival scelebrated on 14th January, this year , in the Eastern State of India in Tamil Nadu the owners bring their bulls in an arena and youth are expected to hold on these fiery bulls by the tail and win prizes if they managed to do so or the owners are awarded if the bulls run astray. But there were reports that the bulls are induced with steroids etc to ensure their fiery portents and hence this amounts to cruelty. No doubt it is an ancient tradition in Tamil Nadu but given the commercial aspect and cruelty the SC has apparently put its seal on this "Jakikatu". Earlier there were guidelines issued by the High Court to ensure the continuity of the game but with adequate safeguards. However the SC seems to have willed otherwise. It is obvious that Mr Francisco Sardinha will have to do a "volte face" . Incidentally Mr Sardinha became a subject of ridicule for having fought the MP bye election on the promise of restoring the "dhirios" and was castigated by the PETA chief. The PETA People for the Ethical treatment of animals is an organisation which ensures the ethical treatment of animals. Incidentally, both Mr Francisco (Mickey) Pacheco Minister for Tourism another lover of the "dhirio" alongwith Mr Francisco Sardinha will be the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour at a felicitation function for Senior Citizens from Colva Betalbatim and Seraulim organised by the Colva United Centre Kuwait at the Colva Church Hall on 12th January, 2007. The function will also include a presentation of HIV/AIDS awareness and a Konkani "tiatr" TUMI tumche dolle ugddat directed by Mr Mario Menezes. This is as per the organising Chairman Mr Alexander Fernandes. It is likely that the duo may have to make their stands known to PETA officials and the audio and visual media on the "dhirio" in the light of the Supreme Court orders, as this order runs contrary to their avowed stand that "dhirios" will be revived following introduction of a private members bill in Parliament. However, I am not sure it is the same problem that Rajan rails against. It appears that for Rajan the migrant laborers themselves are the problem. Her statemate Nandhini Saripalli (ELO 1849), who is the 18th seed also won her two games against unrated players Shubhada Sawant and Karishma Mangyani to remain in strong contention with two points. There was one major upset as World Under 14 Bronze medallist and last year's runner up Shalmali Gagare (ELO 2068) of Maharashtra lost to P.V. Nandhidaa (ELO 1770) of Tamil Nadu. Shalmali grabbed the exchange but in return her opponent got a devastating attack from which there was no respite for the second seed. Riya Sawant, the third entry from Goa, did well to earn two draws in the first two rounds against rated players. She needs to play total of 6 rated players in this tournament to get her initial FIDE rating and the encounters with Shweta Gole (ELO 1821) and Y L Mounika (ELO 1725) have given her the desired results. Aparant: Unbounded Hope Growing up democratically from the grassroots Miguel Braganza It is a new year. Today seems just like yesterday, except for the new found hope of the SEZ policy being consigned to the waste-basket of history. The Task Force on Regional Plan 2021 is continuing its consultative process with the stakeholders to preclude the pitfalls of RP 2011, which was revoked around this time last year. The NGOs and CSOs continue to give voice to aspirations of different sections of people. The meaning of apolitical people's movements is sinking in slowly. One is slowly learning the difference between developmental groups and advocacy. Goa is growing up to be worthy of democracy. Who said politicians must act out of selfless interest? That is not their business. The good news is that Goa is awakening in its villages. The message of the Goa Bachao Abhiyan finds its echo in the Keri Nagrik Samitee at Buthkhamb and Arla, in the People's Movement Against SEZ at Verna and Loutolim and the incipient movements at Naqueirim, Kolomb, Vathadev, Taleigao, Mandrem and other places. The people are beginning to speak at the Gram Sabha. It is no longer the feni and the beer that is doing the talking. Not the burp of the chicken xacuti, either. Sober men and women are finding that they have a voice that has remained largely unused. Gram Sabhas are no longer like a "Juke Box" delivering music that has been paid for. Vox Populi is reflecting the Vox Dei. God is speaking through the people of Goa. His omni-presence is being felt in the corridors of power. Goa has risen up like Phoenix from the ashes in the past according to historians. The Turkish traveler, Ibn Batuta, had done a thorough job of destroying Gopakkapatna or Goapuri in the 1300s under the instructions of the mad Emperor of Delhi, Mohammad Bin Tughlaq. He ravaged Gopakkapatna completely and utterly. Goa was blanked out of history for more than a decade. There was nothing and no one in this place worth mentioning. Fundacao Oriente has a number of books on this subject at Panaji. It resurrected over the last 600 years. We do not need a repeat show today. Goa as we know it now, is a creation of the Portuguese and the circumstances that made the Sondekar Raja to seek refuge of the Conde de Ega in 1764 at the Adil Shah's palace in Panaji. The seven talukas annexed by the Portuguese and the four talukas [Ponda, Sanguem, Quepem and Canacona] of the Kingdom of Sonde [or Sunda] given to its protection, is the Goa that was "liberated" on 18 and 19 December, 1961. Goa is actually a part of the Aparant, the land without boundaries, which is also known as the Konkan. The Konknne, or the inhabitants of the Konkan aparant, had a golden [sunheri] tradition of hospitality and their land was, therefore, referred to as "Sunaparant". Just like the golden sands on its beaches, it spread a golden carpet to all. One can still experience this in the villages of Goa. Sadashivgad would have been a part of Goa if the Sondekar Raja had decided faster when under attack by Hyder Ali's captains. More of it would have been part of Goa if he had made a pact earlier. In the same vein, one does not know what makes the people of Tiracol different from the people in Reddi, Shiroda, Banda, Sawantwadi or Vengurla, except that they did not come under Portuguese rule. These are all Konkan people, separated from us by accidents of history. I am not suggesting redrawing of political boundaries. I am just saying there is no cause for xenophobia. The people of these areas are not strangers. At the Goa Sudharop Community Development Inc annual awards function at the Kala Academy in December, 2007, I made a statement that it did not really matter to me who owned an urban forest as long as it remained a forest and did not become an amusement park. If a Pakistan-born person can be the Congress Prime Minister of India and another Pakistan-born person can be the elected by the BJP as "Leader of the Opposition" in the Lok Sabha, what is the problem with a Pakistan-born person managing a teashop in Colva? If not for the partition of India, the Pakistanis would be known as Indians like you and me. A Delhi-born man was the Chief of Army and the President of Pakistan, both at the same time. He still holds on to one of those two positions officially. There are plenty of Konkani speaking

I now know Mr. Gurunath Kelekar is the father of Samir Kelekar I did go to visit Mr.Gurunath at Azad Maidan on 8th Jan, around 2.30pm but all I found there were the SVM protestors (I think) having jarful of biryani see Azad Maidan pic here http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=2183734509&size=l It was only the Next day I found out that Mr.Gurunath Kelekar was observing fast from him home. I too wish all the best to Mr. Gurunath. May God keep him for many many years on our motherland- GOA. After the recent city bus accident at Margao where a 16 year old School boy died on the spot and some seriously injured, somehow, I feel the next would be Panjim city where the buses with young drivers recklessly seen overtaking each other thus endangering the commuters and the other road users. The city transport is pathetic and need an urgent fixing. See my prev. mail on City transport (quoted below with Video & pic) http://youtube.com/watch?v=h4RVU7jS3mY a pic http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=415810045&size=l See prev. mail (below) on this matter. I am also worried about the number of deaths by drowining in Goa, hwre it appeares, on an average one person dies of drowning every day. Quote: [Goanet] Please wish my father all the best for his hunger strike for road safety in Goa Dear Samir, I am catching up with my Inbox emails, and saw your email. I am glad your dad has called off his fast after receiving some assurance from the CM, although I would not take a politician's word to the bank. I had the pleasure of meeting your remarkable father at the Goa Sudharop awards a few years ago in Panjim, when interestingly he/MARG received a Goa Sudharop award for traffic awareness issues. Unfortunately, the overall situation in Goa does not allow him to enjoy his golden years, and he like many others his age, are still active to save Goa from those who are determined to destroy it. May his tribe increase. A thousand blessings for all he is doing. Ok, how long it takes a bus to reach to Bus Stand from Miramar Beach ? If the bus makes stops at all the 6 or 7 notified bus stops en route, it should not take more than 8 minutes to cover the distance say about 5 kms. (its about 3.5km) But with the present world class City Transport, this could take anything from 20-40 minutes which would involve the following routine: -6 notified Bust stops (with sheds) Multiply by 5 i.e. 30 stops (Buses will stop almost every where on the road). -Just stop at one bus stop with no passengers coming in, and wait there until you see the next bus approaching behind you. - Near Market/opp.Dempo House, there come their own unofficial bus stand solely managed by the Bus operators and Traffic cops ? where they will halt on an average 15 minutes (see pics and video. One can see up to 7 buses one after another at a time) with or without the blessings of traffic cop. -Wait till the bus is jammed packed like sardins. Just few days ago, we were sitting in a bus, an ambulance was coming with its siren on, the truck in front suddenly applied break to save a commuter who was crossing the raod to board our bus, the ambulance rammed straight into the truck thus completely smashing its windscreen (luckily, all 3 escaped with minor injuries). Seeing that there could be trouble, our bus promptly left the scene as the bus and the other 3 buses were solely responsible for that accident for unauthorized parking/stopping thus causing obstructions to other road users. Rajan's naked photographic lense and his sharp words has evoked biting words from both sides of the divide. I for one wholeheartedly support Rajan for his honest potrayal of what is going on in Goa. The truth hurts or perhaps embarasses people. I am not against migrant labor. In a democratic India everyone has the right to live and work where he chooses. I hire migrant laborers myself, and anyone is free to come ant talk to them about our employer/employee relationship. We have such respect for each other, that they invited my wife and I to visit their homes in the suburbs of Hubli. We accepted and visited their far flung villages, paying our respects at their village temples before visiting their homes. We were treated with great respect and honor. Each year they call me from their villages, asking me if I have work for them. And when I do I provide them shelter and proper toilet facilites and pay them a decent wage..In return I get an honest days work from each of them. It is the exploitation of the poor migrant laborers that galls me however. We see these all over the Goa. By the Mandovi river, and wherever construction is taking place there are encampments of workers. They are probably brought in by contractors, paid a pitiful wage, and forced to live in tattered tents with their families including young babies, along the roadside and any other vacant space around. In the morning you can see the bottle brigade heading for the closest bush to defecate. The stench of excrement assaults the senses especially when one is walking on the road, as opposed to driving by. The Law as I understand it, requires contractors to provide toilet facilities to their laborers. I have yet to see a construction site where toilet facilities are provided to the workers. This is what Rajan has been portraying in words and pictures. It is the naked truth. Call it arrogant, brash, or whatever, but the it is still the truth. I would have pointed this out if our 'all knowing guy' restrained himself.:=)) The point all people have to make on this issue (as well as for all Goans) is that "One cannot take the law into one's own hand", what ever one may perceive is the provocation. This is just like one cannot claim all views are welcome; then zing any views one may not agree with. To Goanet - The past couple of weeks I have been spending my early mornings and late evenings meandering through the villages of Bardez. With the flood of migrants trampling on and fouling our land, with the rich bhaile buying it out (with the cooperation of the locals, needless to add), with fractious Goans still squabbling among themselves, I have calculated that it won't be long before the Goa I knew and loved would cease to be. ABBA – Lyrics, Statistics & Trivia Voulez Vouz a Dancing Queen or a Pretty Ballerina? By Cecil Pinto On 8th January 2008 an ABBA look-alike band named 'The Abba Reunion' performed to a packed audience at the Kala Academy Open Air Auditorium. Tickets were priced at Rs. 1000/-, Rs. 500/- and Rs. 300/-. That means a total of 1,327 people paid an average of Rs. 500/- each to watch a duplicate band mime ABBA lyrics and actions. The previous day at the Kala Academy was a free-entry Mando Festival, featuring original compositions, that went a begging for an audience to fill up the much smaller indoor theatre. Even discounting that fact that 31% of the audience for 'The Abba Reunion' were Complimentary Pass holders, 14% were foreigners, 12% were non-Goan Indians and 8% were tone deaf, it was a telling tale of our cultural leanings that we prefer Bootleg Leggy Scandinavians to Bonafide Local Singers. For those not in the know The Syndicate was a hugely popular beat band in Goa in the 80s and 90s that later disbanded. Like with ABBA, nobody in the know about good music could quite explain their popularity. Except for a group of eight Keralites in the audience, everyone knew the lyrics, and sang along for at least the chorus of every song. The eight Keralites, and two gentlemen from Assolna, had seen the sexy hoardings and advertisements showing a back view of the females (A&A) in micro-mini skirts. For example, nothing about the earth or the brain requires a supernatural explanation. This is the conviction of almost all prominent geologists, astronomers and brain scientists, even those who believe in god(s). As my deeply religious friend and fellow brain scientist puts it, if one needed evidence to prove the existence of God then why would one need faith? Cheers, Santosh

Phalgaonkar Hi Rohit, I enjoyed very much your article "Goa - blessed by the Gods". I would appreciate if you could provide me the dates of the temples (you mentioned) were built: Temple of Shri Saptkoteshwar in Narve in the taluka of Bicholim. Temple in Diwar. Was the temple ordered by Shivaji ever built? If yes, where and when was it built? Do you know of any other antique temple ruins in and around Goa? Can I continue this conversation with you for some more enlightenment? Thanks a million for the responses Kind Regards, Gilbert From: "Goanet News Service" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [Goanet] Goa - blessed by the Gods To: "Goanet" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original Goa - blessed by the Gods Rohit R. Phalgaonkar Goa's scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage attracts many tourists, yet many visitors are unaware of some hinterlands and verdant pockets of Goa. Each taluka of Goa is unique and has its own distinct character. The Sahyadhri Khand mentions that Goa was created when Shri Parshuram shot an arrow in the Arabian Sea and ordered it to recede. Along with him he brought many Rishis (sages), out of which, seven meditated near the confluence of five rivers for seven crores years. Pleased with the Rishis, Shri Mahadev appeared on Earth and granted them a boon. The Rishis requested him to stay on this Earth so that even the other people could worship him. The boon was granted and since then, Shri Mahadev resided in Goa by the name of Shri Saptkoteshwar. The Bhojs, the Chalukys, the Shilahars, the Kadambs, the Vijaynagars ruled over this "Punnya Bhumi". The dynastic rule in Goa can be traced from the 4th century AD upto the 16th century. Each dynasty's worship of a distinct deity, new cultural forms and food habits were easily assimilated in Goa's soil and remained for years to come. A beautiful temple of Shri Saptkoteshwar in Narve in the taluka of Bicholim is a testimony to many historic events of Goa's past. The Kadamb dynasty's rule is considered to be the "Suvarn Kaal" or "Golden Period" of Goa. They worshipped the Shri Saptkoteshwar and the Kadamb king Jaikeshi Dev I, in the 11th century, even had the name of this deity inscribed on the coins during his rule. A beautiful temple of Shri Saptkoteshwar of the Kadamb period existed on the island of "Dipwati", today's Diwar. The invasions of the Turks (probably the Bahamanis or Tughlaqs) ruined this temple. The legend in Narve mentions that the temple was reconstructed in Diwar by Madhav Mantri of the Vijaynagar dynasty. This legend is asserted on copper plates of Madhav Mantri dated 1391AD found outside Goa. The temple ruins in Diwar today speak volumes about its past. A water tank with carved niches on its walls is all that has remained of that glorious structure. During the Inquisition period, the "Ling" was kept on a barbican of a well. The marks of the copper vessel can be still seen on it. It was rescued by Narayan Surya Rao Sardesai and was kept in a laterite cave in Narve in Bicholim taluka. An attempt was made by the great Chatrapati Shivaji from Maharashtra, to free Goa from foreign yoke in 1664 AD. He ordered a new temple to be built in 1668 and established a contribution of 600 Honns (a type of currency). This inscription still exists on the wall of the Mukhmandap of the temple today. URBAN GAONKAR Plus ça change Margaret Mascarenhas Although I was geared up for this season, having spent the last two in a mad-writer-anti-social-hermit state, I was unable to conquer my fear of crowds and tended to stick with intimate dinners. Anything over six seemed like a mob. I decided the only way to confront my crowd issue was to take the leap. First I threw a party of my own, next, I hitched a ride with a family friend to Vasco for Austria Day. We were there at the invitation of Dattaraj Salgaocar, Honorary Consul of Austria, and the Salgaocar House lawns were heavily peppered with glitterati, literati and politicos. I asked Goan Observer editor Rajan Narayan who the Penpricks were; he told me. Then I found myself caught up in a conversation with the Power Minister regarding electrical fires on power lines in the middle of the night. "I will not answer your call in the middle of the night," he said definitively, but with a smile, so as to soften the blow. "But, your predecessor did," I said. "The line was crackling and sparking and then snapped and burst into flame. It looked very dangerous. I tried the electricity department, then the fire department, both kept passing the buck to the other. I finally called Mr Kamat at about five in the morning. And he attended to the problem immediately." "I don't answer the phone at five in the morning," he replied amiably. "Okay," I persisted, "What if I were to come in person to your house at five in the morning with an emergency?" "I might give you tea," smiled the Power Minister, who, I discovered later, is also a cousin. I must have started rolling my eyes wildly at this point, because Commodore Venugopal diplomatically took my elbow, said I looked like I needed a drink and steered me towards the bar, where I picked up a glass of white wine. I'm a barefoot village bumpkin most of the time and my shoes had begun to hurt and I felt I fully understood the torture of Chinese foot binding. I sank gratefully into a chair next to cartoonist Mario Miranda, who is one of my favourite people. "What has happened about your ancestral house?" he asked. "Still under inventory proceedings," I said. A total dead-ender as conversation topic. "Let's go get something to eat," I said brightly and stood, wincing and limping in my pretty shoes. We tottered arm in arm towards the buffet and, somewhere near the mutton, I lost Mario. Some women beckoned and I joined them. They were discussing this designer and that. And I slunk away, because, at the rate I'm bleeding money into my latest house renovation, I'll be lucky if I can afford new pajamas this season. After a majority of the guests had left , about ten of us hung around drinking cognac, smoking cigars (yes, sometimes I do that), and talking about FN Souza, and how he used to hang out on the sofa of Pandit Miranda in New York. In the rush of attending to a continuous stream of house guests, it seemed like about a minute had gone by before I was at a CII bash hosted by Pallavi and Shrinivas Dempo. Besides me, there were some Goans who were not CEOs. We greeted one another, and then I was grabbed in a bear hug by industrialist Subbhu Subbiah, the father of two of my girlfriends-Sivu and Walli. He has never let me live down the time over 20 years ago while I was working in Bombay and accidentally boarded the plane to Madras, instead of the one to Goa. "Ha, ha, her father was ready to send out the army to look for her when she didn't get off the plane in Goa; I sent my daughter to pick her up at the airport and told him I was hanging on to her," he said jovially to Mr Jaywant Chowgule, who was distracted by the acrobatics of the entertainment troupe in the background. Mumbai gallery owner Pheroza Godrej and I went off to a quiet table to talk about art funds and then I went up to the buffet. Once again found myself face to face with the Power Minister. He was standing with the Finance Minister. "How come it takes more than four months to get an electricity bill transferred in one's name? And, by the way, I'm moving to Aldona and I hope you guys aren't planning any SEZs over there," I started off..They grinned at me affably. Talking to politicians is just like talking to my contractors who tell me what I want to hear, which generally has nothing to do with reality. "Do you know," said another f

But when such mischiveous articles share our prejudices we righteously submit them "evidence" for our own bigotted arguments. [Goanet] Coconut query ... some further inputs and seeking more information

Some days back, a journalist colleague from north Kerala (Shree Padre) wrote in to ask about the way that coconut could be used. We hope to have this query about coconut to be raised via the United Nation's Solutions Exchange network, which is quite useful. Feel free to log in and raise queries relevant to the subjects being discussed www.solutionexchange-un.net.in You can contact TN Anuradha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for more details. One SolutionExchange network that might be of interest would be related to food and nutrition security. This is a subject of much relevance to Goa. Basically, Shree Padre is a farmer by profession and also involved in farm and water journalism through Adike Pathrike (Farmer's Own Media). Adike Pathrike is a journal which caters exclusively to farmers with the objective of building up an informed farming community. The journal is given to highlighting on individual farmers' experience, their indigenous knowledge and analyses their successes and failures. It also provides them information on different crops and farming practices. Adike Patrike intends throw light on coconut production, its processing and its various value added products for its readers. As it had been noted: India ranks number one in productivity among other coconut growing countries in the world. The average productivity of coconut in the country is 7,608 nuts per ha (2005-06). Of the total production of coconuts, about 5 % is consumed in the tender form for drinking purposes. The rest is utilised as mature nuts for household and religious purposes and for the production of edible copra, milling copra and desiccated coconut. Coconut oil production in the country is nearly 4.5 lakh tonnes. Of this 40 % is consumed for edible purposes, 46 % for toiletry uses and 14 % for industrial uses. Apart from putting coconuts and coconut products to various edible and a variety of non-edible purposes ranging from rafters (for roofs) to broom sticks and also to handicrafts, there have been efforts for development of new value added products through product diversification and by-product utilization. Coconut cream, spray/ dried coconut milk powder, preserved and packed tender coconut water and coconut water based vinegar are a few of them. Some emerging queries: * What are the most feasible options for value-addition on commercial lines? * What are the training and capacity building opportunities available for coconut farmers on value addition? * How do research findings on use of coconut oil/its by-products compare with those of other edible oils/their products from human and animal health point of view? Shree Padre <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: "Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia have done extraordinary progress in coconut value addition. Unfortunately, we don't have the basic information of the products they make there, forget about its economics, marketing skill and other aspects. Most of these are low-tech medium capital small and home industries. Even inside our country whatever efforts are done in the field of coconut value addition is not thrown adequate media light.Kerala has been coming up with many interesting ventures. Coconut oil toilet soaps in south Kerala are giving considerable competition to multinational soap companies." He adds: "More than half a a couple of companies are making VCO (virgin coconut oil). After we highlighted this in our Adike Patrike, 2-3 farmers have also started following suit. One organic farmer from Tumkur has really done laudable R&D on this. Traditional system of making VCO that was in vogue in Kerala is being rejuvenated in Aleppey district.Small women groups are producing at least 500 litres per month." "Elaneer Soda ( Carbonated tender coconut drink) units, like local milk booths are coming up in southern Kerala.Tumkur district in Karnataka is sending a lorry load of coconut rib broomsticks every 3rd day to northern India. There are many more."
