[Goanet] DOCUMENTARY: Where's Sandra? On NDTV 24x7

2008-02-13 Thread Goanet News
Kavita Joshi [EMAIL PROTECTED] informs about an upcoming film of
interest, on Indian mainstream TV channel NDTV 24x7.

Where's Sandra? will be broadcast on NDTV 24x7's new slot Documentary
24x7 at the following times: Thursday Feb. 14 – 9.30 p.m. (at night)
Sunday Feb 17 - 1.30 p.m (in the afternoon). Film-maker Paromita
writes: Please do watch and let as many people know as possible.
Also, please send feedback/support for the slot to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] since it will help in expanding the space we
hope!

ABOUT THE FILM

WHERE'S SANDRA? (Documentary, 18 min., English, Digital Video)
Produced by: CELEBRATE BANDRA TRUST Directed by: PAROMITA VOHRA
Camera: AVIJIT MUKUL KISHORE Sound: ANITA KUSHWAHA Editors: JABEEN
MERCHANT, SANKALP MESHRAM Actors: TUHINA VOHRA, SONALI VERMA, RACHEL LOPEZ

Who is Sandra? And if she's from Bandra where is she? If you saw her
would you know her? As you walk through Bandra past the rozedars
buying food from Jeff's, the college kids making the mochas last, the
aunties haggling with the vegetable sellers, the biker boys on
Bandstand, the commuters pouring out of the sunlit old station
building you may well ask Where's Sandra?

This short film looks for the answers in random encounters and
intimate conversations – in Church, with a priest who leads us through
the graveyard, in the words of poets and the songs of Hindi films, in
the ladies compartment of the local train where a group of women sing
Konkani songs, finally finding several Sandras in Bandra. Some hate
their name, some love it but didn't start out in Bandra and some turn
out to be fraudulently claiming the title.

The film wanders around Bandra wondering about Sandra – stereotype or
fantasy? Affectionate parody or vicious mockery? Still here or just a
figment from the past?

I woulk like to reply, unfortunately the thread with MFH was closed no
further comments or opinions are permitted now, though I have seen two posters
who have done so since its closure, one to be sarcastically say it was about
time the thread was closed, and another who like yourself has picked up the
thread of MFH albeit in a different mode.

I continue to say that we should NOT tread on one another's feelings when it
comes to faith, no matter who they are. If my physical being takes refuge in a
house, and since this house is my castle, then I am permitted to guard it the
residents in the house. If I am physically threatened within my own house, I
will take up arms against the intruder.

My soul resides within my body, while I am still alive and if an intruder
decides to intrude within my soul, I have every right to protect it continue
with my faith, but I take it that some religions are ok to mock, so be it.

My sould remains within me, I have the power to forgive, this I do but I
cannot forget the slight.

In your case, it appears that politics is again mixed up with religion and
visa versa, which to my mind is just another way of conning the public.

Yes, only Krishna has a flute, in much the same way Jesus is seen on cross.
Nobody would suggest that his mother, Joseph or any of the Apostles were
crucified in the same way as Jesus was, though Peter was (upside down by his
own request), but I guess there are painters out there in the big wide world
that do make assumptions do outrage others sensitives, ploughing through as
though they have a right on artistic grounds, a license to print money from
other's pain. Uou know that the Flute swing seat is representative of
Krishna, Ganesh is protrayed by the image of an elephant, not with a flute but
holding various boons in his hands, with his vehicle, the rat a his feet.
Krishna whilst young was caught red-handed with his hands in the butter, that
is why he is seen with a pot of butter when he was a child, with a flute when
older.

Perhaps you can modify your banner so that you can have your day at the
temple, if you are celebrating something, then play this game the correct way,
I am sure the opposers will not have anything to say about it, since you are
correct in your depiction of the Hindu deities. If you keep religion politics
separately, there will be no issue for them to contemplate, it appears that
they just wanted the same spot on the same time as you had been using, it was
just a trick from their political masters.

  Good luck next time,

2008-02-13 Thread Floriano_GMAIL

Rico,
Hope Rico is acceptable, since I like shortforms.

Nowhere did I say that Raj T is right. But that is chauvinism. And Diana
was talking about the same, the mind-based conflict leading to chauvinism
when acutely threathened. Acutely threathened by what ?...you may ask
:-)). The answer is 'Political popularity'. Raj T would definately want to
cut to size Kripashankar Singh, a UP Bhaiya, who is the current MLA with a
swelling slum-vote-bank which Raj T can never shake. Therefore the ire
against North Indians. If the same MLA was a South Indian, Raj T would move
against South Indians. Raj T will be alive and kicking taking any line (
against North or South Indians) from the understanding that 'Mumbai will
burn if he is touched'. The conflict, my dear Rico is not economic, or
ethnic or religious. The problem is political and nothing but political. If
these rabble-rousers ( read Raj T etc) are kicked in the groin by the
Election Commission and render them impotent, things will never get out of
hand. But EC will not and cannot move in. That is the sad part of it.

Here in Goa, the fear is that someone like Raj T will be born some day if
the Election Commission sleeps over this issue of migrants deciding what
government we Goans should have. It is a matter of frustration when you
know that you are going to be reduced to a nonentity in your own land. It is
not the 'kicking the migrants out' that will help Goa. As a matter of fact
'kicking the Election Commission' where it hurts will help Goa. For Goa
cannot survive without migrant labour force. Goa does not and will never
have a blue collar work force. This was decided when Goa was liberated in
1961. One of the patrons of Goa who was in charge then, and who is now
talking big, like we say in Konkani - Malun'ank don ton'dam ', is Dr. JC
Almeida. He was partly responsible to open up Goa industrially to the rest
of India when Goans didn't know head or tail of doing business except
running bars and restaurants. What he could do was to start a training
process to train Goans and channelise them into industrial vocations. Goa
cannot allow every Tom-Dick and Harry who boards a Goa bound train and lands
here to queue up in the voting line to vote for Digamber Kamat, Dayanand
Narvekar, Babush Monserrate, Vishwajeet Rane and the likes who are working
towards underming Goa rather than work for Goa.

Diana has given you an example of Sancoal where the Panchayat is run by the
settlers, so much so, that the Sarpanch cannot even speak a word of Konkani
or English, but Kannad. You have your answers from this example and no more
is required. And if you think that I am against this, then you have another
think coming. I would rather prefer Kannad run Panchayats in Goa than to
have our own Goans in the saddle. Call it the crab mentality or whatever you
like. But that is the fact of life in Goa today. Our own guys are our own
enemies.

Hi Floriano, Fred is my login-name. I don't use it to for myself.

As far as Raj Thackeray goes, what are the lessons we learn from him?
Would
you appreciate him if he had a campaigns in Goans in Mumbai too (estimated
at 100,000 in 1960, no figures since). Do you think he's doing the right
thing w.r.t North Indians? Who do you feel has granted him the rights for
him and his uncle to decide whom to target -- South Indians, Muslims,
North
Indians -- as and when he chooses?

Above all, can the concept of India as a federal entity (however flawed)
ever continue with more of this kind of nativism in a metropolis
thinking,
as Dipankar Ghosh called it [

Are you just rabble-rousing here, or would you be willing to forego the
advantages of belonging to one larger South Asian market (which needs to
be
expanded, not shrunken) if you are not willing to pay the price that goes
 along with it?

(In fact, the price that most of the anti-outsider lobby on Goanet
blames on the migrant could be better attributed to stem from a range of
other trends (corruption, abuse of the system, the loss of control over
the
political class, deep divisions and mistrust within Goan society,
land-related rackets, the spurt of middle class consumption and affluence
including by you and me, and the greying of Goa due to the contruction
 plague which you know about.)

ENVIRONMENT-INDIA: Call To Save Major Biodiversity Hotspot
By Keya Acharya

The Purple Frog, discovered in the Western Ghats in 2003, is testimony
to the area's rich biodiversity

Credit:S.D. Biju

BANGALORE, Feb 8 (IPS) - Environmentalists are reviving a plan to
conserve the vast hilly, forested region running parallel to the west
coast of peninsular India (western ghats), recognised as a global
biodiversity hotspot.

We have to get together again to stop the ecological degradation that
is now taking place in the western ghats,'' says Pandurang Hegde,
leader of the 'appiko' (hug the trees) movement of the 1980s, which
forced the government to ban tree-felling inside the protected area.

The 'Save Western Ghats' movement of the 1980s involved over 20 local
and regional people's movements who got together to march the length
of the sector between November 1987 and February 1988, in an
awareness-building protest against the construction of dams and power
stations that destroy one of the world's richest habitats.

Movements under this banner influenced government policy to stop the
felling of trees in Karnataka and cancel plans for a dam in the Silent
Valley which was declared a patch of undisturbed tropical forest and
converted into a national park in 1984.

The Indian government also set up the Western Ghats Development
Programme in 1981 to ensure policies maintained ecological balance,
preserved genetic diversity and created awareness for eco-restoration
for the damage already done. But those successful environmental
movements of the 1980s had, in subsequent decades, died down.

The western ghats cover 159,000 sq.km, traverse 1,600 km through six
west coast states -- Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka and
Tamilnadu -- and house an incredible diversity of species and some of
the finest examples of moist deciduous and tropical forests.

The ghats, also known as Sahyadri in Maharashtra, has 5,000 species of
flowering plants, 139 mammal species, 508 bird species and 179
amphibian species. At least 325 of these are globally threatened
species.

Its a complex network of 22 rivers that provides nearly 40 percent of
India's water-catchment systems.

New Delhi-based environmental writer Sudhirendar Sharma likens the
western ghats to the Amazon forests in its environmental importance.
The stakes for saving the western ghats are much higher than
previously envisaged and the scope much higher, says Sharma, The
entire region stands to gain as it is the gateway to life-saving
monsoons that provide water-security in the subcontinent.

But, in recent years, a fresh spate of construction activity
encouraged by the government has re-appeared in these hills.

Currently the best stretch of wilderness exists in the
Nagarahole-Bandipur--Mudumalai national park belt of Karnataka and
Tamil Nadu states and the adjoining Wynad region of North Kerala,
holding India's largest protected population of 1,500 elephants.

But the entire protected area faces great pressure from all sides.

In 2006, Prakruthi, a non-gopvernment organisation (NGO) founded by
Pandurang Hegde and dealing with sustainable harvesting of non timber
forest produce, undertook a journey through the ghats to assess the
situation and found 'mindless development' taking place.

In Maharashtra, private urban townships, steel and power plants are
posing a fresh set of threats to this biodiversity. Mining, diversion
of rivers, wildlife tourism and monoculture plantations in Goa have
conservationists worried.

Dams, power plants, mining and violent left wing guerillas threaten
the ghats in Karnataka. Encroachments from agricultural plantations,
urbanisation and pollution threaten the forests in Tamil Nadu and
Kerala.

The very ethos of the Western Ghats Development Program appears to
have been laid to rest by the government,'' complains Hegde.

Sharma, who accompanied the Prakruthi team on their assessment journey
and wrote a travelogue report on the situation, believes that the
concept of the ghat's forests providing oxygen needs to commodified in
the new market economy that has taken hold in India.

If we can sell carbon offsets, why can we not sell oxygen outright?,
he declares. We need to set up a system wherein those in the ghats
who conserve their forests and thereby help maintain atmospheric
oxygen for the entire country and subcontinent should be paid by their
governments for doing so.''

The group meanwhile has decided to set up a summit later in the year
where all the stakeholders in the western ghats can meet and decide
upon a course of action.

A website will be set up in March to gather people's opinions,
intensify the Save Western Ghats campaign worldwide and attract
international attention, says Sharma.

This new movement cannot be on the lines of yesteryears because
today's reality is market-driven,'' explains Hegde. We need to
involve even marketing people in this venture.

Thomas is right about one thing, though. If Goans had

Diana,

You have highlighted the key points in this land scam scourge. However, nothing
will change in Goa
unless politicians and their pimps go to jail for violating land laws. A
current MLA and son of a
former Chief Minister was reported by NDTV last year for having set up several
scam companies to
organize illegal deals. He is now a Minister in the current government. No
current Goan politician
can and should be trusted. Every major land transaction of the last 10 years
should be reviewed
and the guilty sent to jail. Nothing less. Who is willing to do this? Protests
by a motley group
of well-meaning activists mean nothing in the long run. The land mafia will
turn Goa into one
large slum.

Regards,
George
P.S. I did not change the subject line and the word ghantis. For all the
labored explanations,
it is derogatory. They are still, as Gandhi called them, children of God -
even if unwelcome in
Goa.

Yes, in migration is as old as the hills in Goa, but I think everyone will

think we have to understand why Goans have suddenly taken to chauvinism as
you put it. Could it be that the migrants are now descending in overwhelming
numbers? Perhaps there is no question of assimilation now, because Goans are
being drowned by the waves. You may have a point as you said at the
Goenkaranchem Daiz meeting that Goans are not competitive enough, but here
in Margao, I have seen the cartels that the out of state migrants have
quickly formed with regard to other traditional trades. They have
marginalised outmanoeuvred the naive Goans and taken over. As I see it, the
Goan is a gentler breed than that hailing from other parts of the country -
all that is fast changing now that the natural Goan graciousness has been
exploited to the hilt by migrants ( and here I do not refer only to the
poorer classes) of course in cahoots with our politicians.

Police brutality against minor girl comes to light
--
A case of gut-wrenching police brutality against a minor girl has come to
light
and police higher-ups have instituted a departmental inquiry into the
incident.

Allegedly, a 15-year old girl working as a maid, was picked by an all-male
police team from the Calangute police station at 7.30 p.m., and kept in
illegal
detention overnight at the police station. She was beaten under the soles of
her
feet and made to run. She was also kicked in her stomach and back, was given

electric shocks, deprived of food and threatened with torture of her private
parts.
She was not produced before any magistrate, nor was any record of her
arrest made.

These are the charges against Calangute police that are the subject of a
departmental inquiry by a team headed by Bicholim deputy superintendent
of police, Mr Shamba Sawant. The victim girl's torment would have been
in vain had not her sister complained to a women's organisation about the
alleged police torture of the minor girl. The women's organisation swiftly
lodged a police complaint before the Director General of Police,
Mr B S Brar, forcing the present inquiry.

Moved by the girl's plight, the National Domestic Workers Movement
– Goa unit, has now pledged to monitor the case until the end. The facts
of the case, as related by NDWM, are as follows. The 15-year old girl hails
from Orissa and was employed as a housemaid in Calangute. Following
a complaint of theft against her by her employers, Calangute police picked
her up on January 20, 2008 and subjected her to the above-mentioned
brutality. Sadly, the girl's employers who lodged the complaint against her
had not paid her wages for a long time. Outside intervention was necessary
to recover her dues totalling Rs 18,000, sources said.

The NDWM called a meeting of domestic workers at Mapusa last Sunday.
A NDWM press release said that all the domestic workers have expressed
support and solidarity with the victim. They have demanded that a fair
inquiry
into the violation of human rights be conducted and that the guilty be
punished.

When contacted for his comments, the Inspector General of Police,
Mr Kishan Kumar was curt. He only said a departmental inquiry has been
instituted under DySP, Mr Sawant and that it would be taken to its logical
end. The DySP, Mr Sawant also declined to give details of the case.
This is not an investigation. This is a departmental inquiry. So I am not
able to divulge details of the case,'' Mr Sawant said.

Incidently, going vegetarian for Lent 'kills two birds with one stone'

[Goanet] Guinness Website on - Konkani World Record - Marathon Singing at Kalangann, Mangalore

Guinness Website on - Konkani World Record - Marathon Singing at
Kalangann, Mangalore

30 January 2008
Singing marathon record smashed!

At 10pm on Sunday 27th January 2008 a new Guinness World Record for
the Longest Singing Marathon by Multiple Singers was achieved by the
Mandd Sobhann Cultural Organisation, in Managalore, India. The
stunning 40-hour record was achieved without any rest breaks by a
continuous stream of 44 different groups consisting of 1,711 singers
belting out 645 songs in the Konkani language.

A record of this magnitude is just as much a test of logistical and
organisational skills as it is singing durability - the attempt took
almost a year of meticulous planning to succeed!

As Guinness World Records adjudicator, Keith Pullin, announced that a
new record had been set, the vast crowd at the Kalaangann (the world's
only Konkani Heritage centre) erupted in deafening applause and
cheers, as the organisers danced and embraced with unbridled tears of
joy and relief. Fireworks, confetti, and tickertape filled the warm
night sky as singers, musicians and spectators partied into the
morning of a brand new, world-record-holding-day.

Port vs people ?

What started off as a minor jurisdictional dispute between
the Goa government and the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT)
over territorial waters seems to have blown up into a full
-fledged fracas between the people of Vasco and the Port.

The very fact that all three MLAs representing the port town,
cutting across party lines, have thrown their weight behind the
Mormugao Bachao Abhiyan (MBA) — a united front of
organisations of trawler owners, barge owners and traditional
fishermen, as well as workers' unions and citizens' forums —
points to there being widespread resentment against the port
administration's expansion plans.

The main issue at hand is the plan of the Mormugao Port to
shift the existing fishing jetty and trawler anchorage at Vasco
Bay, off Kharvewaddo, to a location called Gina Penta at
Chicalim. The Port plans to do large-scale reclamation at
Vasco Bay to construct berths for ships. Around 194 houses
in the area are to be demolished, and the families relocated.
The project is estimated to require an investment of
Rs280 crore.

But the MPT has other major plans too. The 'West of
Breakwater' project will reclaim 1.60 lakh sq metres of land
on the seaward side of the existing breakwater, to create
new berths for ships as well as a rig repair facility, at an
estimated cost of Rs200 crore.

The biggest project of them all is the 'Baina Bay Project'.
This will see one breakwater being built from Baina to
Pequeno Island, to virtually create a new port. A total of
6 lakh sq metres will be reclaimed to create an international
-size shipbuilding yard, a container transhipment terminal,
a berth for cruise ships, a world-class marina and watersports
facilities, at a total cost of Rs440 crore.

There is more to this issue than just the fear of the fishing
community about being displaced. The question is whether
Goa's largest city, which already has an acute shortage of
housing and infrastructure, can absorb the fallouts of such a
colossal quantum of investment.

The possible environmental impact of reclaiming close to
10 lakh sq metres of land from the sea is also an unknown
factor. Reclamation that changes tidal and river flow patterns
sometimes results in severe erosion of the seashore, even in
areas far removed. Besides, how will the city react to losing
the Baina Beach, which will be off-limits to the people of
Vasco once the Baina Bay Project gets underway?

There is no gainsaying that the expansion of the Mormugao
Port will benefit Goa. As MPT Chairman Praveen Agarwal
himself has pointed out, any port exists for the economic
betterment of the people in its hinterland. But as we have
seen ever so many times, development cuts both ways. Even
as it creates great new opportunities, it can also shatter lives
and livelihoods. Often, the former is grabbed by the influential
and wealthy, while the latter falls to the lot of the common
people.

The Port administration should seriously consider the concerns
of the residents of Vasco and find a way out. There is no need
for this to become a battle between the Port and the people.

[Goanet] Facts v/s Hearsay

2008-02-13 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Message: 8, dated Sun, 10 Feb 2008 from Jose Colaco on subject Re: [Goanet]
Facts v/s Hearsay – being quite interesting I take a quote from his message
which reads - But considering that my initial impression might be incorrect,
I wish to draw attention to the following: Sabina Martins of Bailancho Saad
shared her experiences during her visit to the violence affected areas. We
would also like to thank Vidyadhar Gadgil for sharing his documentation on
the communal violence, Arun Pandey for insisting that I do the investigation
and to Preetu Nair for introducing us to some people who proved invaluable
to our investigation. I wonder if we can get a word or two directly from
Sabina Martins, Vidyadhar Gadgil, Arun Pandey and Preetu Nair. 1: Do you
agree with this report? 2: Can you share the 'documentation' that was
shared?

Is Jose Colaco trying to impress upon Goanet that Sabina Martins, Ramesh
Gauns, Vidyadhar Gadgil et. el. were factually present on the day of
incidence that took place at riot affected site? Were their dispositions to
commission not hearsay dispositions? If so how can a commission or for that
matter even court can accept hearsay statements as factual truth?
One should not forget, that court prefers “real” evidence direct from
witnesses of what someone saw, not that they were told by someone else. In
practice, hearsay is when someone else tells you: this usually includes the
instructions from the police or one’s instructing solicitors, Hearsay is
signaled by the words alleged or allegedly.

Fact finding report may represent hearsay, facts, opinion, and conclusions
in that order in separately identified sections and if the said report is
full with only hearsays rather than facts than the so called report has no
place in the eyes of law. This is exactly what has happened with independent
commission report appointed by one community to divert the attention from
factuality.

The involved complexity at the riot prone area was so complex that even one
man commission of Nikhil Kumar appointed by Congress Government headed by
Pratapsingh Rane than CM, concluded saying - it is intuitively and logically
reasonable to presume that there was a pre-planned and pre-conceived
orientation to the communal riots but in the absence of any tangible
evidence, it is not possible to identify or pinpoint the actual persons or
organizations responsible for it.  However I must highlight the failure of
the police, village panchayat, and other governmental authorities in nipping
such situation in the but before they go out of handtherefore I suggest
remedial measures to prevent such incidences from occurring in future.
Therefore this probe indicts none.

The Congress lead government accepted the report only not to act on it!!

So after this two commissions finding is there anyone in the net willing to
initiate fresh fact finding exercise? …such persons are most welcome…..let’s
try and fix the culprits!! OR still interested into finding or asking self
styled persons as to what hearsay things they had disposed before the
independent commission appointed by one community to divert the attention
from factuality?

Best regards,
Dr. U. G. Barad

Dear Dotor Jose Colaco (JC),

This has reference to your message No 11 dated Sat, 9 Feb 2008 as is
appeared in Goanet Digest, Vol 3,issue 164. From this posting I picked up
part of your message wherein you used my name. You wrote in your above
message:

I'd say that GoaNet has been significantly enriched by the Bhandares and
Barads of this world. They provide balance to the Judes, Gilberts and the
Bernados - also of this world. Wish they would not repost propaganda from
the blatantly prejudiced sites - without checking for possible veracity or
possibility. Of what is hearsay?

In reply to your message TAKE TWO:

1. Why are you using plural stance in addressing name of an individual as
Judes, Gilberts, Bernados, Barads Bhandares? Is it a new style of adding S
to name and or surname of the individual...to express one's hatred?

2. How do you locate or differentiate prejudiced sites, veracity of site,
and hearsay sites? For every site says they are not biased, they represent
actuality, and that they don't upload any hearsay on their site! Can you
please through some light on these aspects! I'm sure your response will make
pleasant reading to Goanet. OR is it the case of pickle..one likes it..other
hates it giving excuses like its too salty, more pungent, excess vinegar as
spoiled the taste and like wise!!

Most importantly, I pen my messages to Goanet and or articles to local
dailies as I feel deem fit and to the best of my reasoning that too after
reading books, published articles / columns and also after referring to the
wealth of knowledge available in the net, without even bothering or fear of
any person and or any political party who are likely to raise hundreds if
not thousand queries. Secondly I don't write to make any propaganda nor have
I yet taken any platform of any political party or religion. While
concluding this message I can say with confidence that our Goanet members
are much more intelligent than you and me..they know which messages to read
and which messages not to read!

Best regards,

reading your name and following the work both you and Edwin have put

the latter direction.

Now to get to the debate

On 12/02/2008, Flower2 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Frederick,
Yes, in migration is as old as the hills in Goa, but I think everyone will

Quite graciously? That's an understatement if ever there was one. Let
me tell you why.

The story of Goa's aboriginals is one of colonialism. Of course, this
is not a view you are likely to encounter in the English-speaking
rarefied atmosphere of Goa (or even in Konkani, maybe hints of it in
Marathi occasionally), because the people who dominate the chattering
classes (and control the hegemony over ideas) are people like you and
me and not (yet) the Gavada, Kunbi, Velip or Dangar. We need to ask
them what they felt about being swamped by later waves of migration,
which took over their most fertile lands and sent them to desolate and
dusty hillsides where their populations are still found.

The story of past Goan migration is also told in old-time legends and
myths -- like the story of Parashuram, which has it that the Brahmins
were asked to settle here after slaughtering the Kshatriyas! So much
for gracious assimilation!

Contrary to the saffronised rewriting of Goan history, not all who
migrated out of Goa did so to flee the Portuguese religious bigotry.
Outmigration has taken place even before 1510, and while it's
fashionable to blame Islamic rulers too today, there have been other
reasons, including caste-based infighting.

When I spoke to leaders of the Goan (largely-invisible) Kunbi
community in Kerala, [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kudumbi] they
claimed their community size is about 500,000 today. Even if this is
an exaggeration, it gives some hints of the reality.

think we have to understand why Goans have suddenly taken to chauvinism as
you put it. Could it be that the migrants are now descending in overwhelming
numbers? Perhaps there is no question of assimilation now, because Goans are

As Floriano has acknowledged, after some zig-zagging on the issue,
it's because Goa's political class, its business lobbies and its
intelligentsia have all taken on themselve to point to the outsider
menace as the cause of Goa's many complex problems (quite a few of
which should be blamed on these classes themselves).

being drowned by the waves.

Are their Goan cartels as migration studies byStella
Mascarenhas-Keyes, Dr Teresa Albuquerque and even the recent
Burma-book edited by Yvonne Vaz-Ezdani (disclosure: I have a link to
the book) suggest? Why are Goans failing to tap work and opportunity
in their own land?

My view is that the crisis is far more serious, and if we keep
pointing to red-herrings like in migration, then we're going even
further away from a solution.

Goan is a gentler breed than that hailing from other parts of the country -

Every community needs to have some 'victim status' if it is to take on
battles which have little logic behind them.

all that is fast changing now that the natural Goan graciousness has been
exploited to the hilt by migrants ( and here I do not refer only to the
poorer classes) of course in cahoots with our politicians.

Goan-versus-NonGoan is too simplistic an equation. I agree, there are
exploiters and exploited. And there's no one-to-one congruence with
genetics, ethnicity or place-of-birth here.

Today, they are well on the way to being the major stakeholders, while the
Goans become homeless wanderers. If they have come to make a livelihood, I
don't think anyone has a problem. But when as in Sancoale, the population of
outsiders is 9000 vis a vis some 4000 odd of the Goans, then the balance of
power tilts and control and the decision making process falls into outside
hands. Little wonder then that Deve Gowda sees great political potential for
 himself in Goa.

Sancoale is one extreme. But can't we understand it as the
colonisation of Goa by Goans? Who passed on the land to the Zuari's
there? (Some whose surname I share, I believe?) Who was the chief
minister of Goa then, and what was behind his agenda of merging Goa
into Mahasthtra?

[Goanet] Footpath Poet at the World Book Fair, New Delhi 2008

2008-02-13 Thread brian mark mendonca

World Book Fair, New Delhi 2008 and the Footpath Poet

  -Brian Mendonça

Poets are the soul of a country. Sometimes they can also be treated as pariahs
by a country.

As if self-publishing my book of poems 'Last Bus to Vasco: Poems from Goa'
(2006) were not enough, I was also warned not to display it at the World Book
Fair by the organisors – the marshals of the National Book Trust – who were
scouring the various halls. All they needed of me was Rs 38,000 for a weekend
– since I work on weekdays. They said they could give me a concession. I had
priced my book, inclusive of audio CD, at Rs 150.

The day the World Book Fair opened in New Delhi, was also the opening day of
the Carnival in Goa, 2nd February. I put my Goa T shirt in the biting cold and
packed some books in my canvas bag. None of the stalls at the 14 Halls had a 5”
x 8” space on their racks to display my book. I sold one book to an
ex-colleague at one of the stalls.

Having been listed in the India chapter of the international Journal of
Commonwealth Literature (December 2007), cut no ice with a prominent
distributor who I went to see at Daryaganj. ‘See me in April,’ he had said, ‘We
don’t take new books in the current financial year. I’ll do my best for you.’

So on the following Saturday morning, on the penultimate day of the Book Fair,
I decided to brave the odds. If only to prove something to myself. To prove I
had some space in this ancient land, however tiny, which would bid me welcome.
The carnival was over. I was also buoyed by the exuberance of the Kolkata book
fair, which had artists selling their paintings on the lawns, and where I had
once played the guitar. This 'nasha' (spell)was sadly lacking at the World Book
Fair.

I packed the foldable wooden minitable I had picked up from Tilonia, the
Barefoot University in Rajasthan and decided to display my book on the
footpath. As I steadied it on the footpath opposite hall No 1, I covered it
with the beautiful off-white crochet doily I had bought at the Mapusa bazaar –
a tribute to so many Goan ladies who had spent their lives knitting. On top of
that I placed the 16 postcards of Goa done in sepia by Mario Miranda all around
the doily. These were a collection made possible by Museums of Goa,
Salvador-de-Mundo, Goa. On top of that went 10 books with a stand on which I
displayed one book.

At the end of the 3 hours that Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm I had sold 5 books.
After 5 pm the wind grew cold and the sunlight was receding. The exposure was
thrilling to say the least. A publisher friend from Agra bounded across to meet
me saying he was keen to know what 'junoon'(madness) it was that made me sit
there. A bevy of young female journalists thrust their ID cards in my face and
said ‘Sir we would like to ask you some questions.’ They opened with, ‘Why are
sitting here?’ I said, ‘To display my book Because they won’t let me do that
inside.’ ‘We have been watching you. Many people just walk past. Does it bother
you?’ they persisted. I replied ‘No, I am here to display my book. It is a
shame that Goa has no presence here at the Book Fair, at the State Pavilions at
Pragati Maidan, nor at DelhiHaat. I am doing what little I can. Besides, these
books already have clients abroad in the UK and Canada.’

It was wonderful how the footpath, wiped clean by some dexterous sweepers,
began to exert its own energy field once the books were placed there. How its
quiet space made the world book fair more egalitarian. A world with a human
face where those left out could cock a snook at those ensconced right inside.
People who stopped for an ice cream at the stall nearby looked at me curiously.
Others, exhausted after doing the rounds just plonked down beside me, for want
of a proper space to sit. An elderly gent from Chennai gamely sat on the
footpath beside me and shared his nostalgia with me for his hometown and I
exchanged notes with him about my recent trip to Coimbatore and Mamallapuram.
Suddenly that wee space became a mini-India where I was embraced by the warmth
of India and its people.

A teenager came up and browsed through the book very thoughtfully. When he was
joined by his friends he said in Hindi, ‘He is asking for Rs 150.’ It was
apparent he could not afford the sum. ‘Ask him to lower the price’ his friend
suggested. The boy’s answer still rings in my ears, ‘He is a poet. He is free
to quote his price.’ He resignedly gave the book back to me. I asked how much
he was willing to pay. With great effort he took out a crisp note of Rs 100 and
gave it to me. And walked away with the book. What humbled me about my
experience was that I could know my readers on a one to one basis, and what my
poems meant to them.

*Comments on The Konkan Packaging Company of Goa*

From original sin to miracles

Philip S. Thomas

The queer B-schoolish title, Konkan Packaging Company of Goa evokes in a
casual reader either the obscure Konkan Railway Corp or the Container Corp
of India or, at a stretch, Honeymoon Travels (P) Ltd (the hit film from
Bollywood). Actually the article seems to be about the parceling of Goa's
scenic land - big time in recent years and, by implication, fraudulently--
for real estate development. The overly clever title itself is of a piece (a
minor one) with the generally trivial or stereotyped press Goa gets in
national media but that is another story.

Be that as it may, my present purpose is to focus on the snide point buried
by the author in the middle of his article in shoot-and-scoot fashion as
follows: No doubt a collection of historical and cultural curiosities have
shaped popular ideas of Goa, and one of the dominant ideas currently is that
of Goa being easily consumable. What is to blame? Certainly some of the
factors include the air travel boom in India (Goa's Dabolim airport is
amongst the 10 busiest in the country) which has helped turn Goa into a
weekend agenda for part-time residents and annual holidaymakers.

Among the historical and cultural legacies about ideas of Goa is the one
of The Rome of the East. Given this, it is surprising that the author has
not resorted to the concept of original sin in the chronic Goan game of
apportioning blame for the existing sorry state of affairs. If he had done
so he would well have concluded that the handing over of a civilian airport
to the military (specifically the Indian Navy) after Liberation in Dec 1961
is the prime source from which a lot of Goa's governance troubles may have
flowed, albeit unintentionally.

No doubt there is an air travel boom in the country with the dawning of the
21st century and no doubt Goa's beaches, woods and rivers are a big
attraction for Indian and foreign tourists. In the opposite direction,
locals like Goswami are benefiting from increasing - relatively low fare and
speedier - air connectivity to distant points in India like Assam (albeit
via Hyderabad and Kolkata). But to baldly say that Goa's airport is amongst
the 10 busiest belies the fact that it is steadily slipping in national
aviation rankings and is even on the verge of being squeezed out of the Top
Ten.

This is because the runway has, no doubt, been steadily expanded over the
years to a jumbo jet-friendly one about 10,000 feet long. But the aircraft
parking and passenger terminal spaces have not kept pace, due to the
stranglehold of the military and the myopia and/or inertia of the state and
central governments. Furthermore, airline landing slots were largely
confined to the non-peak afternoon hours since the peak morning slots were
blocked for military flight training - by aircraft designed to operate
from 700 foot decks of aircraft carriers. The resulting congestion evokes
Heathrow in some imaginative people's minds. And the loss of half the Navy
's strike aircraft purely to routine sorties doesn't help the base's
reputation as a premier training centre.

The original sin was compounded (perhaps without compunction this time) in
the 1990s when the Indian Navy began a massive project, called Seabird, 100
km to the south at Karwar where its next aircraft carrier is to be based.
But there is no priority to build an air station there to which the training
flights can be transferred from Dabolim to release the slots for scheduled
airline use. Instead the Navy is backing the civil aviation ministry's plan
to build a futuristic new PPP airport at the extreme northern tip of Goa
since it will result in the mandatory closure of the Dabolim civil enclave
(and reversion to the military in full). This will be a tragic replay of the
severe cost and access problems currently looming at Bangalore and Hyderabad
for air travelers at their farcical airport non-systems.

In this difficult situation the Goa government has opted for a two-airport
solution that has been approved in principle by the ICAO itself (that too
on second thoughts and after some politically threatening agitation in Goa
which barely predated - in 2005/06 -- the ones the author has focused on).
But its materialization and sustainability over the next few decades will,
in itself, be a minor miracle, to use common sense and a common local
theological expression.

To cut a long story short, how is governance in a small, scenic and secluded
state to be efficaciously carried out when an obdurate military is ensconced
in the airport on undiscussable security grounds and marches to the beat
of a different drum? Airports, after all, are the commanding heights of
modern socio-political economies especially those like Goa's which are based
on tourism. The author's flippant remark in the core of his article betrays
surprising ignorance of the complexity of the fundamental factors at work or
constitutes a mental block

By this Policy, Goans Majority, Identity Culture will remain intact.

I would like to add couple of more points.

1. regarding age limit criteria for Government or Private sector jobs.

The returning NRIs/NRGs who would like to work back in India / Goa
should get relaxation in age limit for applying Gov/Private Jobs back
in their home country. I remember many people who had to return to Goa
during invasion of Kuwait could not get jobs in Goa as many had crossed
eligible age limits. There are thousands of Goans working in Gulf
countries who do not have substantial savings even after working for
number of years due to very high cost of living in these countries
particularly those who brought their families with them as they have to
part major amount of their earnings for expenses such as house rent
which is very exorbitant here in Gulf countries in addition to vehicle
maintenance, food and children's school fees and other.

2. Secondly you need a huge capital to invest in business activity here
in Goa. If security/Guarantee requirements are relaxed in obtaining
Business loans would also be very helpful for NRGs to start their own
small venture in their motherland Goa.

[Goanet] God and you

2008-02-13 Thread Albert Desouza

Dear Brothers and sisters

Today's gospel speaks about temptations of Jesus Christ. We have three things
in this. First is Jesus Christ -representing an ordinary man yet with the power
of God -God himself second we have the devil and third we have the earth. God
allows devil to tempt Jesus for He has given Jesus to us as an ordinary man and
so can be tempted. Make these stones into bread- Many times we think about the
earthly food, earthly money- try to make provisions. We try to convert stones
into bread meaning convert the earth into money. This is applicable in today's
life. God has created hills for its purpose, fields for its purpose and trees
for its purpose.Man wants to convert these into money by cutting trees,
destroying fields and forests. We are trying to bring disaster into our life.
Man does not live on bread alone but by the word of God. IN today's life man
rally aborbs the word of God. In that our way towards salvation hasbeen
mentioned. God himself has given the ten commandments which Jesus has modified
into two which are more than enough yet we find it so difficult. The ancient
christians lived by love. They built houses under one roof, helped one another
at the time of need. During the wedding time each family would loan out
something or other. Labour was free, halls were free as peiople built temporary
areas outside their houses. People from the locality took part in the wedding
and enjoyed for several days.Today we have become so self centred. We have
weddings in rich environment, invite only the ones that are of our nature,.
Many times relations and neighbours are left out. The whole locality does not
take part in the celebration which mostly is expensive celebration but without
quality. Today even funerals have become comerciallised and many times the body
of the dead person is not at home .Many times we do not feel any loss. human
beings have become mechanised.we are trying to convert stones into bread. We
forget about the religious aspects of the wholething. In another place the
devil shows Jesus the entire city with all its riches. Adore me andyou take
this. Today we are not worried about adoring the true God. In fact we have no
religion which Jesus Christ has created with his blood. we adore the devil to
get his riches, to get his legacy. bribes, unwanted perks, etc etc fills our
hearts with pleasure rather than bowing our heads to God the Almighty and like
Mary says here am I , the handmaid of the Lord tell me your plan and I will
follow it. I shall adore only my God. The choice is yours

[Goanet] Why Religion is not a private matter

2008-02-13 Thread Carvalho
It is commonly acknowledged that both religion and sex
are a private matter.

I contend that neither sex nor religion are a private
matters. Imagine if you will, a couple privately
engaging in conjugal bliss somehow manage to emit a
nauseous gas while doing so, surely their indulgence
cannot be at the expense of their neighbours. What if
their sex acts involve the torture of small animals?
Would we object? What if in a country of one billion
people, their private acts produce 10 children per
family? Would we be disgruntled to say the least?

Last year, Christians felt sufficiently enraged to
picket infront of Salman Khan's house in protest of an
objectionable piece of art intending to be purchased
by him. Obviously, Salman Khan killing innocent
pavement dwellers and poaching innocent animals, did
not sufficiently incense Christians to protest.

I am always amused by Muslims, who will think nothing
of their entire female populations being denied the
right to vote, the right to an education, the right to
work and yet cartoons by a Danish cartoonist are
grounds to go on a global rampage.

No, my fellow Goanetters, neither religion nor sex are
a private matter and our sensibilities in this area
are utterly misplaced. Imagine being denied
penicillin, or hydro-electricity, or roads because the
technology or know-how is not available in that
country. We would do our best to address that
disparity and acquire the technology.

Yet, we are quite content to live in disparity and
disequilibrium caused by the absurdities propped up in
the name of religion. This is cowardice of the most
pure kind. If we are to survive then we must muster
all the courage and conviction we have and speak up,
speak out and speak against all that is wrong within
our own religious dogmas as well as that of others.

[Goanet] Talking Photos: Witnessed another drowning death..

2008-02-13 Thread JoeGoaUk

Witnessed another drowning death..

Last one was on 31st Dec. 2007 at Miramar.

This time we came to Panjim for a preview of ‘Sobit amchem Goem’ video..

As we were walking in the Art Park, some boys (probably the boatmen/Canoe) told
us a man just got drowned in the Mandovi river opp. Dempo House.

We rushed to the spot, the incidence took place just 20 minutes ago around
4.45pm. (13.02.08)

The deceased body immediately started floating and watched by many from the
Extended footpath opp Dempo House/close to belpuri gaddas. Police came around
5.20 followed by fire brigade but it was the police canoe boat rescued the
survivor (at 5.30pm) who was standing in knee deep water under the extended
concrete platform opp Dempo House (see pic). The survivor was there for about
an hour in the water watching his friend’s floating body drifted to a distance
of 150 meters.

Around 5.40 the body was brought ashore by the police boat/canoe (about 150
metres from the drowning scene near the boats as seen in the pic)

The deceased is from Bangalore, in his 30’s and appeared to be a Christian as
Rosary was seen around his neck.

His friend confirmed that they were both drunk and that they were in Goa for
just one day. He also said he cried for help but none came to rescue his friend
despite there were so many boats just about 100 meters away. He also said (with
tears rolling down) his friend was a good person and that he immediately
jumped but unable to rescue him as he could not swim and took shelter under
platform.

According to the eyewitnesses, they say the deceased climbed other side of the
fence (facing water) see pic to urinate but suddenly lost balance and fell into
the river and immediately drowned and his body shown up in seconds.

[Goanet] Talking Photos: Dirty Panjim to (Rajan P. Parrikar)

2008-02-13 Thread Edward Desilva
Hi Rajan,
I have said before I personally wrote a letter to Porrikar, to take
some action to look after the disabled and the blind walking on the
foothpath in Panjim.
As a matter of fact the foothpaths and roads in Panjim, does need a -
'once over'.
NOTHING IS DONE - by either party.
If Goa PEOPLE were efficient, there was no need for the NRI's to be
given a special ID card to lable them as NRIs and robbed.

If a minister goes abroad to study the way, others run their country
(like Sardinha did), Sena activists in Goa linked to the BJP take over
and make a mess of Goa even more.
Porrikar is a snake in the grass waiting to make a mess of Goa,
building big projects (like Saddam), for personal glory at taxpayers
expense, while the poor are neglected.

Are the others any better? As the saying goes, the devil you know is
better than the devil you don't.
This has been proved when Goa gave BJP a chance to rule, it went from
bad to worse, some Goanetters have got a short memory.
Again, Goa once bitten is twice shy (of BJP).

You may be taking pictures.
Don't forget, the MLA's in opposition have got a lot of power to
question the wrong doings. (so much so that Cameron is making mince
meat out of Brown in UK).
Why are the Goa MLA's quiet?
Do I have to come to Goa to ask them this question?
Are the BJP as corrupt as the Cong.? (waiting to do the same, when
given a chance - hence the silence?).

If given a chance ,YOU too would be out of Goa in a flash.
Why aren't you out of Goa?
For some people uncertainty is not their best forte, while people like
me thrive on it.
$25/- in my pocket (that is all the India Govt. would let me bring in
1960) I took the chelange and won.
I don't think I would have been able to do that in India.

Come back to Goa and do the same? well, many a wise men have said and
I agree with them.
India changes you - you cannot change India (same goes to Goa).
ED.

Rajan Said:
To that end, every single contribution counts. So again, I invite you
to come aboard instead of merely standing on the sidelines, using the
keyboard as an antidote for your finger itch. Warm regards, r

[Goanet] Act fast to REMOVE picture

2008-02-13 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Dear Anand,

I took up your above humble appeal to my think tank group for consideration.
But I was shocked by the unanimous decision passed by the group which reads
- let others who have shown concern to M. H. Husain's art do this. We have
already resolved what we had to say on his art and his brush..even much
before this topic came up on Goanet.

This resolution is a full stop to me.

So, I am left with only to express my regrets to you Anand and your appeal.

I hope and confident that Goanet members, individually and collectively,
will consider your appeal favorably.

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

[Goanet] Policy decision on beach cleanliness given more time

Policy decision on beach cleanliness given more time

PANJIM, FEB 13 - The Bombay High Court has granted additional time to
government authorities to ensure implementation of the policy decision taken
by government for appropriate cleanliness in the city and more particularly
on the beaches of Goa.

The collectors of both the districts and the director tourism as also the
director of municipal administration have been asked to file detailed
affidavits by March 5, 2008.

A Division Bench consisting of Justice R M S Khandeparkar and Justice N A
Britto though granted additional time to the respondents in implementing the
policy, did not take lightly apathy on the part of departments concerned
while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Rajan Parrikar.

The High Court also directed proper maintenance of roads, and footpaths
without any obstructions and ensure scrupulous compliance of the scheme
which was submitted to the Court.

In February 27, 2000, government had taken a policy decision to maintain
cleanliness of beaches and keep foot paths free of hurdles.

Re: [Goanet] Evolution and God (from a Scientist)

2008-02-13 Thread Fr. Ivo da C. Souza

From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The following post reveals the creationist position of
a spokesman of one religious organization out of many.

There are several misconceptions regarding evolution
in this post.

*Being a scientist, Dr.Santosh is wrong again. Fr.Vittorio Marcozzi is not
holding a creationist position, but that of creative evolution.
Creationism (or 'creation science') refuses to accept evolution 'tout
court'.

Naturally, he will find misconceptions regarding evolution in this post.

...should be ensured in a secular democracy such as India is that

such private creationist views and misconceptions
regarding evolution are not taught in the science
classrooms of public schools and colleges.

*Agreed. Evolution should be taught in the public schools and colleges in
the subject of Science. Creative Evolution should be taught in the public
schools and colleges in the subject of Religion for the Christian students,
wherever such classes are given. Creationism should not be taught to
Christian students (much less to students of other religions and
'no-religion') either in Science or in Religion. It is biblical
fundamentalism. Science is not attempting to prove or disprove God at all.
God, by definition a Supernatural Being, is not within the scope of Science,
which is the study of natural phenomena.

Fr.George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said that
placing Intelligent Design (ID) theory alongside that of Evolution in school
programs was wrong and was akin to mixing apples with oranges. According
to him, Intelligent Design (ID) isn't science and doesn't belong in
science
classrooms. Intelligent Design isn't science even though it pretends to
be, the ANSA

news agency quoted Coyne as saying on the sidelines of a Conference in
Florence. If you want to teach it in schools, Intelligent Design should be
taught when religion or cultural history is taught, not science.

Creationists say that the Universe is so complex that it must have
been created by a Higher Power. But Intelligent Design (ID) is merely
Creationism

- a literalist, fundamentalist
reading of the Bible's story of creation - camouflaged in scientific
language, therefore it does not belong in science curriculum.
In his interview to The Tablet, Fr.George
Coyne reaffirmed God's role in creation, but said Science explains the
history of the Universe. If they respect the results of modern science, and
indeed the best of

modern biblical research, religious believers must move away from the notion
of a dictator God or a designer God, a Newtonian God who made the Universe
as a watch that ticks along regularly. God in his infinite freedom
continuously creates a world that reflects that

freedom at all levels of the evolutionary process to greater and greater
complexity, he stated. He is not continually intervening, but rather
allows, participates, loves, he concluded.

I thank Dr.Santosh for his interventions and sincerely praise him for
lifting up
the scientific standard of this Forum, though I do not agree with him on
several counts.
Neither, being a scientist, will he agree with me on the existence of God.
Both scientific and metaphysico-theological discourses
are needed, with due sensitivity to both 'believers' and 'un-believers'.
Otherwise, more questions may be raised than answered...

Regards.
Fr.Ivo

Re: [Goanet] Hiunduism and Henotheism

2008-02-13 Thread Frederick Noronha
Whether you ignore religion or not, Selma, it won't go away. It might,
on the contrary, come back and bite you with a vengeance. Can you, for
instance, ignore the religious pretences (and pandering of certain
lobbies) by George Bush? Or can you pass through Mumbai when some of the
nativists in the metropolis decide to whip up hysteria against a
section of the population based on religion or region?

Someone referred to Karl Marx's much-quoted view about religion being
the opium of the people and wrongly attributed it to Stalin. I think
the Wikipedia has a fascinating take on this whole issue. *Religion is
the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and
the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opiate of the people.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_of_the_People

And don't forget this:
*

At the time when Marx wrote this text, opium was legally available in
some parts of the world, although there were beginning attempts to
regulate, legislate and prohibit its use, sale and production, due to
the negative effects the substance had on individuals and society in
general. According to McKinnon (2005), there seemed to have been four
primary senses which opium could be used as a metaphor in the mid
nineteenth century:

  1. Opium was an important medicine. It was used as a painkiller or
sedative, but also for a wide range of ailments, including
 combatting cholera http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholera.
  2. Opium was a keyword for widespread social conflict, particularly
 the Opium Wars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_Wars.
  3. It was the source of an important 'social problem', one of the
first 'public health' concerns, known as 'baby-doping' (giving
your child opium to keep them quiet.)
  4. Finally, opium was the source of fantastic visions of the 'opium
 eaters' (De Quincey
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_de_Quincey, the Romantic
 Poets http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romantic_poetry, etc.)

I really think that people who have their heart in the right place make
a mistake by distancing themselves from religion, and leaving it in the
hands of the bigots, communalists, tyrants and dictators to cynically
abuse and misuse as they choose! FN

You are absolutely right here. I am not interested in

knew naught of the world and the hopes of people who
were dependent on the vagaries of nature for their
very survival.

[Goanet] Hiunduism and Henotheism

2008-02-13 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
I might go to temple once in a year or two but heart to heart I always pray
to god. Equally I don't believe in religion or caste but at the same time I
am proud in the religion and caste where I am born though without my choice.
I feel others should also be proud in their own religion and or caste in
which they are born. But in doing so one should not heart the feelings and
sentiments of others. That's what I strongly believe in. With this
background, let me once turn myself religious person and explain what I
consider Hinduism is and also about Hindu Gods, both these threads have been
stretched too long in the on going discussion.

The proper name for Hinduism is 'Sanatan Dharma'. Sanatan = eternal Dharma
= religion. Thus Hinduism stands for Sanatan Dharma meaning Eternal
Religion.

Going by eternal principles, Hinduism is God centered. Eternal principles
apply to all human beings everywhere where laws of physics exist and work
all the time. The healing principle will get to work immediately the moment
a little cut is sustained on a finger. No one can tell when this healing
principle began or when it will end. It is there existing eternally, all
pervading (available everywhere), omniscient (aware all the time and
therefore healing principle gets to work when injury is sustained). These
simplified examples serve to understand God's power: omniscient,
omnipresent, omnipotent.

If a great scientist like Einstein discovered or realized laws of physics,
Hinduism would call him a great Rishi (Maharshi or Prophet of truth.) Self
realized persons like Jesus Christ are called Rishis (Prophet) and their
teachings would be readily acceptable to those who properly understand the
principles of 'Hinduism'. From the ancient times, many great Rishis achieved
self-realization through such practices as meditation and austerities and
they realized knowledge concerning Eternal Principles. Their knowledge,
taught to disciples, and eventually made available in written form, is known
as the Vedas (Ved = knowledge), the scriptures upon which Sanatan Dharma
(Hinduism) is based.

Accept Hinduism (Sanatan Dharma) most other religion is prophet centered
depending upon the lives of some personal founder or founders. Christianity
is built upon the life of Jesus Christ, Mohammedanism (Islam) upon Mohammed,
Buddhism upon Buddha, Jainism upon the Jinas, and so on. It naturally
follows that there must be in all these religions a good deal of fight about
what they call the historical evidences of these great personalities. If at
any time the historical evidences about the existence of these personages in
ancient times become weak, the whole building of the religion tumbles down
and is broken to pieces.

Hinduism escaped this fate because this is not based upon persons but on
principles. Krishna is never considered as an authority of the Vedas, but
the Vedas are the authority of Krishna himself. His glory is that he is the
greatest preacher of the Vedas that ever existed. What remained was the
guidance of people from time to time according to different times and
places, according to different circumstances and environments. People had to
be guided along the old, old path and for this these great teachers came,
with their great sages.

The ceremonies and rituals connected with Hinduism (and other religions)
are designed to cultivate increased spirituality. The very fountain-head of
our religion is in the Vedas (Srutis) which are perfectly impersonal; the
persons all come in the Smritis and Puranas- the great Avataras,
Incarnations of God, Prophets, and so forth. [Please note: Srutis means
revealed knowledge; Smriti means memory, history]

Another important thing to note is No religion built upon a person can be
taken up as a type by all the races of mankind. Vedantic religion does not
require any such personal authority. Its sanction is the eternal nature of
man, its ethics are based upon the eternal solidarity of man, already
existing, already attained and not to be attained.

In connection with does Hindus worship one god or many? In every temple, if
one stands by and listens, one will find the worshippers applying all the
attributes of God, including omnipresence, to the images. It is not
polytheism, nor would the name henotheism explain the situation. The rose
called by any other name would smell as sweet. Names are not explanations.

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

[Goanet] This and that

2008-02-13 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

I read the article The Colonisation of Goa by Rajiv Desai
posted here. I have no quarrel with what he has written
except to say that things in Goa have gone far more south
than what he is aware of. Where the Portuguese could not
penetrate, the Indian virus has. No matter how much the
master of the cut paste tries to bob and weave with his
pinko babble, Goa as we have known it will soon be history.
The wretchedness of India has already struck roots here
and acquired critical mass.
*

Several weeks ago in one of my weaker moments, I had
dinner at a famous Goan restaurant in Betalbatim. It was
terrible, the food and the service. But the curious thing was,
most of the waiters were non-Goans. When I asked (in Konkani
first and then in English) for an undo, I got blank stares. I
resolved then and there that I would refuse to place orders
for Goan food with any non-Konkani speaking fellow. Which
Niz Goemkar in Goa asks for recheiado in Hindi? It is a
disgrace.

Same thing happened in Agonda last week. The bhailo who
took my order didn't know his undo from gundo. I asked
the Goan owner if he couldn't find local Goan boys to staff
his restaurant. His response was revealing. He said Goan
boys are too demanding. Translation: they want better
wages and terms at work. The bhaile on the other hand
are available for any crumb you can toss at them.

This high non-Goan content in the waitstaff at other Goan
restaurants even in south Goa is now the norm. Which begs
the question: For whose benefit is the tourism industry in
Goa? The taxi trade is the last Goans-only bastion standing
but I suspect, not for long. In all the other tourist trades
Goans have been out-manoeuvred by non-Goans. Is this
what we bargained for when we championed tourism as
Goa's economic nostrum?

In the past 2 weeks, I have gone to Harmal (Arambol) thrice
intending to do some photography of ancient sites on the
hill there. And every time I have come back without doing
the job I set out for. The sights are too repulsive to stomach.
Rows of stalls by ghatis and swarms of low-end white
trash. The ghati stalls ostensibly sell trinkets but behind
the scenes is a flourishing drug trade, probably with
everyone from the panch, sarpanch and the local MLA in
on the cut. How in the world could Harmalkars let their
beautiful village and beach turn into a sty like this?

Yesterday's Tarun Bharat published a couple of pictures
of Morjim. The first, of a statue of Lenin erected in front
of a restaurant, the second, of a Russian flag hoisted at
another location.
*

The SEZs may be on the low burner for now, but spicy
sorportel is cooking elsewhere. Mahindra Mahindra has
announced construction of a new engineering college in
Goa. My question; WHY? Do we want yet another graduate
churning factory of, for, and by the third-raters?

But that is not all. Herald reports that some company called
Panaroma wants to open up a Jungle Resort in Goa. Tarzan bundolo.
Me Jane, you Fred.
*

Finally - I was at the secluded, virgin beach of Canaguinim
last week. I had climbed the rocks and was taking photos
when I saw a couple of fellows motioning me to come down.
They had a hostile, menacing manner about them, and
demanded to know who I was, why I was here. My response
in Konkani didn't make a dent. They wanted me out, and
out fast. Finally I pulled out my Matanhy card and told
them I was part of the man's team on GMAS etc. It worked
like a charm and there was a dramatic turnaround in their
mien. I immediately became Sir and profuse apologies
ensued. They said that they thought I was here to scout
for land. I told them I was delighted they had taken the
approach they did, and that I wished villagers all over
Goa would do the same. That the usual Goan bonhomie
has been taken for a big ride by the outsiders, that it is
now time to gird ourselves for salvaging the remains.

Warm regards,

[Goanet] The M. F. Hussain controversy- A response by Dr Samir Heble

2008-02-13 Thread sandeep heble
Artists in any sphere are creative people. They are
lateral thinkers. They think beyound the square. Our
'normal' socity sometimes may view them as different.

I believe that artists , be it writers , film makers,
poets etc deserve to use and expand their God given
creative gifts. I'd hate to tell a poet what he/she
should or should not write. In this sense, I would not
like my perceptions of the world to limit his/her
creative pursuits.

Whilst I agree that some paintings of MF Hussein may
have hurt the sentiments of the people , this does not
necessarily mean that the painting in itself was bad
piece of art. It was how we perceived it , based on
our life experiences, our morals and our value
systems. A naked woman may mean different things to
different people. It could well also mean :
a symbol of purity, as pure as the form made by God,
untouched , unblemished by earthly matters.
She playing the instrument could also symbolise the
divinity in a woman spreading sweetness in the world
via melodious notes. How elegant and divine.

Artists by nature are fearless people. This is because
they believe strongly in what they do. That is why
often there is friction when their way of thinking
deviates from societal ways and norms . We have seen
this happening with movies, paintings, novels etc.

On this note, I remember Mahatma Gandhi's words. He
said before we do any act , we need to ask ourselves :
Is this the Truth ? Is it fair to all concerned? Is it
going to make this world a better place to live in ?

Not everyone may agree with what I've written. And you
are well within your rights to do so. And you should
be different and be proud of it too.We are all
different and God made that with a reason. To add
spice to life . To make it more interesting . To help
us appreciate the complexities .

Here's saying cheers to celebrating our
individualities , our creative instincts and
recognising and celebrating the at times troubling ,
yet colurful differences.

[Goanet] Of Goans, non Goans and ....?

2008-02-13 Thread Flower2
You are right George, I too feel the word ghantis' is derogratory, and we
should in a perfect world, all be united through the bonds of humankind. The
poor migrants I feel, are victims of a malign political system just as we
are. In addition, they are forced into leaving their land for their
livelihood, because of the inequitable economic development of this so
called federal entity called India. One part of the country, is compelled
to bear the brunt of the other lawless and backward region and carry its
denizens on their back.

Of course the bold and the beautiful who descend upon Goa, are manipulators,
who in collboration with our spineless politicians and a toothless
administration, do what they please and get away with it.

Having got involved in a few campaigns, including the anti SEZ, I feel many
people have woken up to the problem and really want to do something, but
find it too herculean a task, given the fact that they have to fight against
the might of huge moneybags supported and buttressed by the daunting forces
of an entire state machinery and ironically the very ones we have voted to
power. I don't know whether we have to blame ourselves or the politicians.

Speaking of constitutional rights and duties and enforcement of law is just
an exercise in political correctness. The actual reality is something quite
different. What is lacking is a spirit of justice and equity in the
implementation of the laws by the administration .

[Goanet] ETHICS AND CORRUPTION

2008-02-13 Thread Vinay Natekar
Having monopoly on power and having it for too long breeds arrogance of
power and lack of accountability. Stagnation and arrogance of power
breeds corruption of which one example is a Communist rule in West
Bangal. Similar political culture is being repeated in Goa too. After
MGP's debacle most of the time Goa is ruled by unscrupulous Corrupt
Congress party except for a short stint of Manohar Parrikar led BJP
regime somewhere around 2000 to 2004 during this brief spell Goa was
freed from stagnation of power and liberated from past hands of
rascals, rogues and free booters at least for a short period.

When a certain political party is awarded a domination in power
extensively, no matter what it does as long as it maintains specific
vote-bank equations, it can lead to nothing but arrogance and brute
abuse of power as we have time and again witnessed in Congress rule in
Goa.

This party is aided by the cast ironed perimeter of the prejudiced
mafia of mass Media especially the English one. Congress has been able
to promote corruption because it has acquired immunity from public
opinion. It enjoys lack of accountability to institutions and people as
both have been kept captive and committed to Congress. Media has worked
for congress rather than working for people's enlightenment.

Vote-bank politics either by minority appeasement or buying the
gullible voters with ill gotten money is Congress party has been
indulging for years has built a wall of immunity, invincibility and
lack of answerability on their part to the voters who have brought them
to power in spite of knowing that it is the most corrupt party full of
rascals and scamsters. Its fraudulent ant tainted old guard leaders are
winning every elections even after known facts of their involvement in
scandals.

Congress can do anything and can get away with it as witnessed in recent
illegal house prorogation incident. It can bend the rules of the game
the way it wants It has one set of rules for its own Governments and
another for the rest including political opponents. It can openly or
selectively breach the spirit of constitution and tenants of democracy
for its survival.
