[Goanet] The migrant danger to Goa

2008-05-06 Thread Satyawan Govekar
Dotor Anemiso Fernandes is saying to Santosh bab Helekar that his comments
about Rajans?interview is written in bad taste and to denigrate his work.

Dotor bab what you are saying is not correct. I found Santosh bab's comments
very funny. Rajan bab is doing a good job but we must identify who are real
migrant. Go to Shirgao and see what Dempos (from Karwar), Chowgules (from
Belgaum) and Bandekar from Maharashtra have done to the village.

All these bhatkars are actually nonGoan who came and did boot licking of the
Portugese and put all land on their name. Goa's land is actually belonging to
the tribals like Gawda, Dhangar, Kunbi and Velip. Can you give these people
justice?

Who is selling the land of Goa? it is the same bhatkar people who are become
builders, miners, newspaper owners and politicians. They are the worst migrant
who are pretending to be Goan just because they are upper caste. They are the
migrant danger to Goa. But nobody will throw them out.

[Goanet] Coconut searches for new, better uses for its many products

2008-05-06 Thread Goanet News
Coconut searches for new, better uses for its many products

PANJIM, Goa, May 6: With coconut prices failing to keep up with
inflationary trends, and competition growing, planters of this
versatile nut are looking for alternative ways to enhance their
 incomes. Options are growing too.

Some successful coconut ventures include coconut water-based health
drinks, and vinegar, and miscellaneous food articles available in
 global markets.

There is a growing demand for nata de coconut in Japan and Malaysia,
and technology for making it is available. Nata de coco is a chewy,
translucent, traditional Philippine dessert which is coconut
gel-product from coconut water by bacterial fermentation-prepared.

There is also a large demand globally for kernel and sap based coconut
products, coconut liquid milk, coco milk powder, and desiccated
 coconut.

'Solution Exchange for the Food and Nutrition Security Community', a
United Nations initiative to share information within India, recently
raised this issue and got some useful hints about the versatile plant.

Coconut supplies food, drink and shelter to humans, along with raw
material to a number of industries. A coconut palm has 12 different
crops of nuts at any point of time, from the opening flower to the
ripe nut. Each part is a source of food, fiber, medicine or for
 producing handicrafts.

New ideas are coming up for tender coconut water sales too.

Tender green coconut can be trimmed (removing a considerable portion
of the husk) and shaped such that it can be attractively marketed by
 shrink-wrapping to prevent desiccation.

Thailand has aptly used this method. In India, several companies are
innovatively marketing coconut water on green carts in Hyderabad, as
'Tender Fresh' in Bangalore and 'Coconectar' in Kerala.

Other commercial value additions for coconut, which are being
increasingly noted, are canned sweet toddy, one of the major coconut
products produced and marketed in Sri Lanka; coconut sugar (Indonesia
and Thailand are leadders) and coconut oil.

Coconut oil, besides being edible, is used in soaps, toiletry
articles, plasticizers, safety glasses, rubber substitutes, paints,
synthetic detergents, etc. Glycerin, derived from coconut oil, is also
in demand for medicines, personal care products, food and beverages,
 and animal feeds.

Virgin coconut (VC) oil is now emerging as the most valuable coconut
product, with the Philippines as the major exporter. The export price
ranges from $US8.00 to $12.00 per liter of cold processed oil.

Virgin coconut oil is derived from fresh coconuts (rather than dried,
as in copra). It is produced by either quick drying of fresh coconut
meat, wet milling (oil is extracted from fresh coconut without
drying), or by adjustment of the water content, then the pressing of
the coconut flesh results in the direct extraction of free-flowing
 oil.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has
perfected the microfiltration process for cold sterilization of
coconut water and has made information on the process freely available
 for commercial application.

In India, the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) has
supported a progressive farmer in perfecting the technology for
climbing the coconut tree, making the harvesting process safe and
 efficient.

Another system developed is a coconut dehusking mechanism that reduces
drudgery but does not displace labour.

CPCRI has also standardized a virgin coconut oil process by developing
the necessary equipment suitable for micro enterprise and has worked
 on snowball tender coconut.

Besides, CPCRI has developed a range of copra dryers, which use
agricultural waste as fuel. Kerala Agro Industries Corporation has
 applied these technologies.

Says farmer-journalist Shree Padre, who edits the journal Adike
Patrike (Farmer's Own Media), In the recent past, we have carried
stories of tender coconut minimal processing, virgin coconut oil,
coconut broomstick home industry and more.

Padre argues that the need of the hour is to help farmers build
value-added products from their crops, which otherwise mostly earn
 only depressed prices.

Incidentally, among the different oils and fats, coconut oil has the
maximum digestibility coefficient and is more rapidly digested and
absorbed in the human system than any other fat.

Coconut oil is preferred for medicinal foods, especially for disorders
affecting digestion, absorption and transport of fats, and infant
feeding formulae for the treatment of malnutrition.

Suggestions coming up include providing tender coconuts to
schoolchildren under the Mid-Day Meal scheme, which would greatly
 increase the demand.

 P. K. Thampan of the Kochi-based Peekay Tree Crops Development
Foundation said, in the discussion put out online recently: Coconut
water-based vinegar is being produced on a commercial scale in a few
units in Kerala and the product is

[Goanet] Opposition to Hotel project by St. Inez residents(update and plans uploaded)

2008-05-06 Thread Sandeep Heble
This refers to the construction of a Ground + 6 storey Hotel Project
that is now in the eye of a storm. The said permission to construct
the commercial Hotel Building had been granted to M/S Pentagon
Developers in Plot No PTS/ Ch. No 77/190, 191/192 193 of Panjim City
by the CCP vide its License No 4/80/TS/2005-06/108.

It may be recalled that sometime back, the residents of St. Inez had
raised a banner of revolt against this project that was to come up
near the Alto St. Inez junction to the left of the slope leading to
Altinho, in the ward represented by the Corporator Jyoti Masurkar who
incidentally owes her allegiance to the BJP Panel. The residents had
then briefed the Deputy Mayor Shri Yatin Parekh and a letter in this
regard was also addressed to the Hon' ble Leader of the Opposition and
Panaji MLA Shri Manohar Parrikar.

We managed to obtain the plans of the project; the same have been
uploaded and are available at the link
http://picasaweb.google.com/sandeepheble/AltoStInezHotelPlans for
perusal.

Based on our preliminary and elementary studies, it is quite clear that:

1. When the existing rules and norms clearly stipulate that adequate
parking provisions must be provided in the project in proportion to
the number of dwelling units, the Town and Country Planning Department
has approved the plans despite there being absolutely no provisions
for Parking in the Hotel Project. The CCP too has blindly issued the
necessary licenses to this project without appropriately inspecting
the plans.

2. The present gradient has been wrongly depicted and appears to be
more or less flat in the approved plans, contrary to the actual
reality. The construction work will thus involve hill cutting which
may cause potential environmental damages leading to landslides.

3. The construction work on this sloppy gradient appears to be
allegedly illegitimate.

We are in the process of consulting experts in this field for further
inputs before we take further steps. Though the work has been put to
a temporary halt by the CCP, the work may commence anytime as we have
been given to understand that the builder has the tacit support of
some Corporators in the CCP.

We are marking a copy of this letter to the Honorable Panaji MLA and
Leader of the Opposition Shri Manohar Parrikar and to the Deputy Mayor
Shri Yatin Parekh for their scrutiny and necessary action.

Yours sincerely

With a circulation of 3.5 million, The Times of India is today the world’s
largest English newspaper across formats, sizes and genres. And it is steadily
growing. Last month we made deep inroads in the south when the paper was
launched in Chennai.

Today, The Times of India takes another huge step in enlarging its national
footprint by taking to Jaipur an edition that is printed there and reflects the
concerns of its residents.

The Pink City is at present truly in the pink of economic health. It’s the new
housing hot spot, with construction giants making a beeline for it.

The BPO and IT industries are becoming increasingly aware of the multiple
opportunities it offers. Meanwhile, sectors for which it’s long been renowned –
like tourism and handicrafts – are going from strength to strength. A new,
assertive Jaipur is emerging — proud of its past, confident about its future,
ready to take on the world and live up to its name — the city of victory.

On Sunday, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje formally inaugurated TOI ’s new Jaipur
office, festooned with pink balloons and posters depicting Rajasthan’s
heritage. In a freewheeling conversation with editors and reporters, Raje said,
“At a time when Jaipur is changing at a never-before pace, the entry of a
newspaper which is known across the country and is of the highest calibre is
welcome.” She added, “TOI spreads hope among its readers.”

After Jaipur, TOI lands in sunny Goa on May 7. Through all the expansion, TOI
has constantly been at the cutting edge of change, yet fiercely proud of its
170-year heritage.

Although TOI has transformed itself in line with the changing needs of its
readers, its core values remain constant. Our cornerstone: to serve our readers.

Re: [Goanet] Indian Airlines to restart UAE-Goa service

2008-05-06 Thread Seb dc
Hi all,

There seems to be some misunderstanding here...There was never been an IA
flight to Goa on this sector (Dubai-Goa) So the restarting thing does not
arise. It ought to be a new route for IA. But if you would logon to AirIndia
Express site and select Dubai in the From column you will find the To sector
showing Goa, but nothings been confirmed other than that. A call to the
local office will yield no result, these guys seem to be in the dark.

The DXB-CMB-GOI sector is not bad, considering the transit of 45 min. and
baggage arrival at Goa, (other than the long travelling hrs.) far better
than hoping from International to Domestic in Mumbai and paying for the
extra luggage and the tiring work, if along with kids.

But nothings better than a direct flight !

[Goanet] Conversions as a political tool (Ram Puniyani)

2008-05-06 Thread Goanet News
Conversion: a political weapon

Ram Puniyani
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

One has been hearing a lot about the conversion activities of
Christian missionaries. That there is a threat to Hindu nation due to
Adivasis converting to a 'foreign religion' is becoming part of social
common sense. The real face of the conversion came to fore when after
the attack on nuns in Alibaug (March 2008) was followed by a massive
conversion to Hinduism, Shuddhi ritual (April 27, 2008) in nearby
Mumbai. The person involved in both these has been the same. In the
attack on the Adivasis, the followers of Sadguru Narendra Maharaj of
Ramanandcharya Peeth were involved and in the elaborate Shuddhi ritual
the Guru himself led the conversion. Talking on the occasion he said
the Hindus are being reduced to a pitiable minority because of the
activities of Christian missionaries. He also came down heavily on the
central Government for not pushing through the anti conversion bill
and criticized the Maharashtra Governm ent for passing the anti
Superstition bill, according to him both these steps are anti Hindu.

His claim that Hindus are being reduced to minority is a stuff of make
believe world as demographically India's Hindu population is fairly
stable. The anti conversion bills which many state Governments have
passed/are passing are totally against several articles of our
constitution. Our constitution encourages the promotion of rational
thought, in pursuance of which Maharashtra Government has done the
laudable job of passing anti superstition bill. Those opposing this
bill surely want the persistence of blind faith in society, it is this
which strengthens their social and political clout and Guru is
forthright as far as that is concerned. The same Guru's followers are
adept to violence off and on. In Alibaug the people had assembled to
hear a lecture on AIDS awareness when his followers assaulted the
nuns.

How does one understand the rising incidence of violence in Adivasi
areas? One recalls just around the Christmas time in 2007, massive
violence was unleashed in Kandhmal and Phulbani districts of Orissa.
In most of the Adivasi areas Dangs, Gujarat, Jhabua Madhya Pradesh,
areas of Orissa, there has been a recurrent violence. It is these
areas which have seen the conversion of Adivasis into Hindu fold. One
must clarify that Adivasis are Animists, neither Christians nor
Hindus. While some conversions to Christianity have been occurring
they are not new as Christianity has been here from centuries. These
conversions are due to many reasons, missionaries work in the area of
education and health in particular. In recent times the overall
population of Christians has been declining marginally (1991-2.60%,
1981-2.44%, 1991-2.34, 2001-2.30%) Part of the conversion surly is due
to some groups amongst Christian missionaries wh o do believe in
aggressive proselytization.

The Adivasi areas have invited the wrath of RSS combine from last two
decades in particular since Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, an RSS affiliate
intensified its activities in Adivasi areas. In these areas there is a
vicious anti Christian propaganda leading to violence. Since this
takes place in remote places the culprits can get away easily, more so
with the complicity of communalized state apparatus. In these areas
various Godmen with RSS affiliation, direct or indirect, have been
either been setting up their Ashrams or extending their influence,
Aseemanand; Dangs and Lakhhanand in Orissa, Asaram bapu in Jhabua
refion MP, and Narendra Maharaj in Maharashtra.

Usually violence and intimidation is accompanied by cultural cooption.
This latter has been done by holding huge Hindu Sangams and Shabri
kumbhs. Dilip Singh Judeo, has been doing conversions in Adivasi areas
of Madhya Pradesh. Sanskritzation is also operative in these
conversions to Hinduism. The process has been called Ghar Vapsi or
Shuddhikaran (purification) on the premise that Adivasis are Hindus.
This is unmindful of the fact that Advasis are primarily animists and
do not fall in the category of religion as a social phenomenon, as
applicable to Hindus, Muslims, Christians etc.

Adivasis are the most deprived lot of the society and have been
targeted more for political reasons than for their own welfare. As
during the early 1920s, Shuddhi movement (Hindu Communalism) was
unleashed in parallel to Tanzim (Muslim communalism), now again the
Shuddhi is back. Ghar Vapasi word has been cleverly coined. While
browbeating Christian missionaries for conversions, the same term for
its own activities will bring in disrepute. So this term, Ghar vapasi;
returning home! The propaganda behind this says that Adivasis are
essentially those Hindus who ran away to forests to escape the
conversions by Muslims kings. In forests they kept living for long
because of which they kept sliding down on the scale of social
hierarchy. This concoction serves two purposes. One it feeds into the
misconception that Islam spread by sword and also makes the

Fernandes hat-trick lifts Salcette

SALCETTE defeated former champions Navelim 4-3 to maintain their
unbeaten record in the Basma Bahrain Goans Seven-A-Side Soccer League
for Fr Felicio Diniz Rolling Trophy in a match played at Al Qadisiya
grounds in Salmaniya.

In a fast-paced encounter player of the week, Anthony Fernandes scored a
hat-trick for Salcette with a goal in the first-half and two more in the
last 10 minutes of the game.

Fahad Mohammed rounded off the tally for Salcette while a brace from
Henry Fernandes and one from Joaquim Fernandes reduced the margin for
Navelim.

In another match, CRC Chinchinim scored a solitary goal victory over
Calangute Benfica to remain in second position on the league table.

The lone goal was scored by Jimmy D'Costa in the first half. Calangute
strikers exerted tremendous pressure to neutralise the lead but failed
to find the net.

In the last match of the week, Old Goa bowed to Benaulim 1-3. Tony
Fernandes scored twice while last week's player of the week Michael
D'Souza was also on target for the winners. Savio D'souza pulled a goal
back for Old Goa.

Vincent D'costa of Bahrain Goans gave away the prizes for both players
of this week and the previous week.

The league is being held under the patronage of Young Goans Club is
sponsored by Basma and co-sponsored by Gulf Computer Services and Union
Press.

Today's Fixtures: 8pm - Navelim vs Benaulim (pitch A) and Old Goa vs

1. More Muslims have suffered and died in the Kashmir violence than Hindus.Does

3.The BJP was in power for 6 years. Dr Farooq Abdullah was a partner in the NDA

Somehow my original post on the treatment meted out to Mother Teresa by the BJP
has got distorted along the way. It is a fact that the nation acknowledged her
and her contribution. She was awarded the highest civilian honour, the Bharat
Ratna as rightly pointed out by Sandeep heble as well as Dr U G Barad and
several others and was also given a state funeral. The point that I had made
was that the BJP and LK Advani consciously stayed away from paying their last
respects just because she happened to be a christian.

Another instance of the cussedness of the BJP was in the year 2000 which was
the 2000 anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. This was celeberated all
over the world but was totally ignored by the NDA government. At the same time,
the govt spent over Rs 500 crores commemorating the tricentenery of Guru Nanak
and also the 250th anniversary of Bhagwan Mahavira. Such is their mindset and
antagonism towards christians and christianity.

[Goanet] Saving Goa and migrants

2008-05-06 Thread Samir Kelekar
Rajan raises some very valid issues in his
post about migrants; however, I
dont think we can just pinpoint to outsiders/migrants
as the cause of the problem.

The problem is much deeper. Richer Non-Goans are
buying land/flats because Goans are selling their
lands.
Goans are selling their land partly because they
need the money. And they need the money because they
have been susegaad all their lives and finding it
tough to make ends meet.

Same case with the poorer migrants. They come to Goa
because there is work for them --- especially in
the booming construction industry. Others come to
become fruit vendors because they find Goans are
not competitive enough and they can capture the
market.

Perhaps we should fight for a blanket ban on all
construction activity in Goa.
This can solve a lot of the problem. Richer migrants
wont be able to buy flats, and so they wont migrate
to Goa. A lot of the poorer migrants wont come because
there won't be work for them.

Samir

Rajan is talking about the rich non-Goans who are destroying our

Re: [Goanet] The migrant danger to Goa

2008-05-06 Thread Santosh Helekar
The comments quoted below reveal a misguided belief
that all goencars think alike, and that there is only
one xenophobic solution to the problems of Goa. A
little thought and some knowledge of Goan history
should tell us otherwise.

Goencars have varied opinions about what is good for
Goa. Some Goencars want to divorce themselves from
India completely, and become an independent nation.
Others want to ban non-Goans from settling and
purchasing land in Goa, and preserving something
called Goan identity. Some want to simply eliminate
Hindu nationalistic parties such as BJP. But there
still are many who want to join Maharashtra.

My own view like that of a sizable number, I am sure,
is to adopt reasonable solutions within the Indian
constitution, which, as I have said before is:

obeying the laws, properly enforcing them, reforming
outdated ones and enacting new ones wherever necessary
- laws against corruption, misuse and pillage of land,
destruction of the environment and heritage, social
discrimination and prejudice, and exploitation of the
working class.

As far as my earlier post in this thread is concerned,
to those who want to choose the Goan nationalist or
segregationist option, I have suggested additional
essential steps that they need to take to preserve all
the Goan identities without committing treason. Yes,
there are many Goan identities - a separate identity
for each Hindu caste and outcaste, a separate identity
for each of the major castes of the Catholics, and
another one for the Muslims. I forgot to add the
following additional measure:

o) To divorce Goa completely from India, ban all
Indian nationalist parties such as the Bharatiya
Janata Party.

Cheers,

Santosh

PRIYANKA PERIERA

MUMBAI, MAY 5 : News of this foreign tourist's visit to Goa should
bring some cheer to authorities in the beach paradise: Hollywood star
Meg Ryan, famous for her roles in such superhits as When Harry Met
Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, spent about a week enjoying the summer
sun in March even as the state was struggling to cope with the
battering it got after the murder of British teenager Scarlett
Keeling.

In fact, so low profile and uneventful was her visit that it almost
went unnoticed until she presented her credit card after splurging on
Indian designer wear at Wendell Rodricks's boutique in Panaji.

Ryan came to Goa with her three-year-old adopted daughter, her nanny
and an unidentified male friend. After staying at another hotel, she
checked into the Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa in Cansaulim in South
Goa on March 24.

She came to the hotel along with her daughter and two other women and
asked for a room at the front desk. But nobody at the front desk
recognised her until somebody in the lobby identified her as Meg
Ryan, a Hyatt spokesperson told The Indian Express.

During her five-day stay, the 46-year-old star visited Panaji and the
churches of Old Goa. She also wanted to visit temples but her
daughter fell a little ill. She also shopped at Wendell Rodricks's
boutique and at Souzas, the spokesperson added.

Ryan, who has made a mark in romantic comedies, spent most of her time
at the hotel, visiting the spa a couple of times. But she seems to
have loved the food, trying out all the restaurants and cuisines at
the hotel and especially appreciating the Italian and Goan fare.

Her love for Indian designer wear took her to Rodricks' store in
Panaji on March 25. She became the latest Hollywood celebrity to step
in there after Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet. Dressed
in a simple mul tee, white trousers and slippers, she looked rather
simple, according to Rodricks' salesgirls.

My salesgirls couldn't even recognise her, thanks to the way she was
dressed in a pretty ordinary manner. Only when she handed over her
credit card did they realise that it was Meg Ryan, said Rodricks,
sighing at the thought that he missed meeting her as he was not
around.

She picked up eight pieces, mostly whites, which included long dresses
with a bit of beadwork and some smart tunics. She also picked up a
couple of satin numbers and printed scarves. It was basically resort
wear which she could wear in her hometown LA as well, said Rodricks.

Once they realised who their customer was, so enamoured were
Rodricks's staff that they even forgot to get her autograph on the
change room wall, which is some kind of a graffiti board. Sheryl
Pinto, one of the salesgirls, said she found Ryan to be extremely
friendly and down to earth.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Pentecost Sunday

2008-05-06 Thread Jude Botelho
4-May-2008

DearFriend,

Weall have moments in our lives when we feel enthusiastic, alive and energized
bywhat we are doing or what we are involved in; but we also have moments when
wefeel drained out, spiritless and deadbeat. We cannot be self-energized,
atleast not for long. But the Spirit of God is given to us and it can and
doesbring newness into our lives if we let it work in us. This spirit is a
giftfreely given to all who desire and welcome God into their lives. Have
a‘Come-alive in the Spirit’ weekend! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: The Feast of Pentecost -“Come Holy Spirit and renew us!”
11‑May-2008 Readings:Acts 2: 1-11; Corinthians  12: 3-7, 12-13;
John 20: 19-23;

The
story of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is packed with theological
significance. Just as the giving of the law on Mt. Sinai marked the birth of
the people of God, so the giving of the Holy Spirit was the beginning of the
Church. According to Jewish tradition the giving of the law was accompanied by
a mighty sound, which turned, to fire from which issued a voice that proclaimed
the law. The same symbol of fire now acts as the vehicle of the Holy Spirit,
which brings new life to the Church. What gives the incident its specific
Christian colouring is the fire and the speaking in tongues. Fire was supposed
to be the sign of the last time, where fire purified and consumed impurities,
now the Spirit of Jesus comes to bring a new fire and a new spirit. Speaking in
tongues was meant to announce a new presence of God, a spontaneous outpouring
uttering the praises of God. Luke’s message here is that on this day the last
times begin and the new age of the Church is alive with the Spirit descending
on all peoples to proclaim salvation till the ends of the earth.

Fire
Fire is anawesome element. It can both destroy and create. Under arsonists,
fire can burnhomes and villages. Under skilled workers, fire can transform
materials intoceramics, steel and glass. For example,Steuben glass is noted
for its distinctive designs, extraordinary clarity andremarkable strength. It
took Steuben craftsmen almost a year to complete themassive ‘Great Ring of
Canada’ as our nation’s gift to Canada on the occasionof its centennial in
1967. Although many talents were used to fashion thatSteuben glass, it would
not have been possible without fire. Technicians canput together the right
combination of sand, alkalis and oxides, but only firecan transform these
ingredients into clear glass. Artists can create a designfor the glass, but
only fire can give it actual shape and form. –Because firehas such immense
power to transform and create new possibilities, it is an aptsymbol for the
Holy Spirit. Besides its power to transform, fire
has otheruses: it lights up, brightens and dispels darkness; it purifies and
consumesimpurities; all of which make it an ideal symbol of the Holy Spirit.
Albert Cylwicki in ‘His Word Resounds’
Inthe second reading Paul speaks to the Corinthians about the variety of gifts
ofthe Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Spirit are not earned by any deed of ours

Wemay possibly think that the vegetables and fruits of the earth have

case. The wild plant is generally of little use as food, and only becomes
valuablethrough our care. The wild cabbage as it grows on some ocean cliff has
a longstalk and a few raw green leaves with a sharp and unpleasant taste. It
has bythe long cultivation of man been brought to its present state. The wild
peartree is an ugly bush, bristling with fierce thorns, and bearing a rough,
hard, and bitter fruit, in no way comparable with the delicious mellow pear of
somecared-for country orchard today. It is not without care and cultivation
thatthe fruits of the Spirit can be gained.

they take in on that first Easter Sundayevening, the breath that gives them all
a new heart. Only in the gift

Goa tech trap nets gangster on run
OUR BUREAU

Bhubaneswar/Mumbai, May 5: After being on the run since April 13,
Sandeep Acharya alias Raja, the prime suspect in the murder of coach
Biranchi Das, was arrested today from Panaji, Goa.

While unconfirmed reports stated that the gangster had surrendered
in a Panaji court, Orissa and Goa police maintained Raja was indeed
arrested.

They added that a joint force of Orissa and Goa police succeeded in
tracing the fugitive gangster using electronic surveillance system and
laid a trap to nab him.

We arrested Raja (35), this afternoon after receiving information
from the Orissa police that he will surrender at Panaji police
station. We have arrested him under Section 41 (arrested on suspicion)
of Criminal Procedure Code. He will be produced before a magistrate
tomorrow and his custody would be handed over to the Orissa police
after that, said inspector Francis Korte of Panaji police station.

Police sources said Raja arrived in northern Goa this morning and was
traced by the Orissa police through his cellphone signals.

Orissa police negotiated his arrest and asked him to surrender before
the Panaji police. An Orissa police team led by our assistant
commissioner has already left to bring him back on transit remand,
said police commissioner Binay Behera. We had been monitoring Raja's
movements electronically. Details would be given once he is here, he
said, refusing to elaborate on the type of electronic surveillance
used.

Police sources said that Raja was caught from near an STD booth near
MG Road by the Goa police.

Ever since the murder of Biranchi on April 13, the gangster had been
absconding. The Orissa police had been on their toes raiding not less
than 50 places in and around Bhubaneswar to trace him — but had
failed. Police teams were also sent to Mumbai and Visakhapatnam, but
they, too, had returned disappointed.

However, the state added extra pressure on the fugitive when an SDJM
court called him an absconder and announced that his properties
would be auctioned if he did not surrender.

The gangster has 35 criminal cases against him, including four for
murder, registered at different police stations. In his 16-year-old
criminal career, Raja was jailed 18 times, including the last time
when actress Leslie Tripathy lodged a complaint against him.

On April 22, Raja's close aide Chagala surrendered in Bhopal.

[Goanet] Saving Goa and migrants

2008-05-06 Thread Mario Goveia

From: Samir Kelekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Same case with the poorer migrants. They come to Goa
because there is work for them --- especially in
the booming construction industry. Others come to
become fruit vendors because they find Goans are
not competitive enough and they can capture the
market.

Perhaps we should fight for a blanket ban on all
construction activity in Goa. This can solve a lot of
the problem. Richer migrants wont be able to buy
flats, and so they wont migrate to Goa. A lot of the
poorer migrants wont come because there won't be work
for them.

Mario adds:

Samir,

Before your tongue got stuck in your cheek you were
doing pretty good in your pithy analyses of the Goan
dilemma.

Of course the problem is not the migrants. As with
migrants the world over, and I am one, migrants are
always held to a different standard, and should, in my
opinion, as part of paying their dues, but tend to
become convenient pawns when things seem to be going
awry.

Say what you will, Goa today would be static without
migrants. The largest economy in the world, the USA,
would be static without migrants which is why legal
migrants are celebrated here and welcomed with open
arms in emotional citizenship ceremonies.

The most ironic example of Goa's dilemma is our good
friend, Floriano, enterprising, emotional, highly
motivated, honest to a fault, who would desperately
like to protect Goa for Goans, but would be unable to
conduct his construction business successfully without
migrants.

Such is the price of freedom and progress in a
thriving modern post-socialist democracy.

Probably the biggest MLM is Amway; here is a link
about it:-

http://www.skepdic.com/amway.html

Mario adds:

The original post regarding Quest.Net should never
have appeared on Goanet as an unpaid advertisement.
However, the cat's out of the bag and has generated a
lot more heat than light.

There is a huge difference between a Ponzi scheme or
ILLEGAL pyramid scheme, which basically has no
legitimate business activity that takes place, and a
legitimate and LEGAL multi-level-marketing [MLM]
business model which provides real products and/or
services and gives average individuals the opportunity
to share in the value they create by word-of-mouth
advertising among their friends, neighbors and
acquaintances.

MLM is nothing but a business marketing model. No
more, no less. The profitability of the company is
still based on the demand for its products or
services, the prices it can charge when compared to
competitors and its cost structure. Those who make a
lot of money in MLM would probably make a lot of money
doing other entrepreneurial things as well.

However, there are good MLM businesses and bad MLM
businesses. The devil is in the details. I have seen
such businesses advertised which won't even tell you
up front what the product or service they are offering
is. They just tell you you will make a lot of money
working from home. That should be a red flag.

Beware of food supplements and beauty products that
may be completely bogus as well as expensive when
compared with what you can buy in a drugstore.

If the MLM company does not emphasize the earning
potential in selling its products and services and
instead emphasizes how one can make lots of money by
simply recruiting distributors, that would be a
business to avoid.

As Mervyn has said, if what you see and hear seems too
good to be true, it probably is. If the initial
investment is high, or information on the company is
lacking or hard to find, run away fast, don't just
walk. Most of the bogus MLMs fold within a few years
and typically the gullible get burned. As P.T. Barnum
once famously said, There's a sucker born every
minute.

The inventors of MLM, Amway, are still chugging along
after decades with worldwide sales in the billions.
However, most of those in the system are NOT getting
wealthy, though some certainly are.

Here is one web site for beginners to learn about MLM.

Soon, Goa's urban areas will be wireless web worlds
7 May 2008, 0711 hrs IST,Sunando Sarkar Andrew Pereira,TNN

PANAJI: You will have wireless access to the worldwide web much sooner
than you expected. Telecom giant BSNL will bring the WiMAX technology to
the state's more populous areas within six months from now.

The technology will help you access the internet, without using cables,
in select zones spread all over the state. WiMAX (Worldwide
Interoperability for Microwave Access) now allows wire-free use of
broadband services across the globe. Goa, after WiMAX arrives, will join
the league of cities like Atlanta, San Francisco, London and Stuttgart
(and Bangalore in India).

BSNL plans to include Goa's important urban areas - Panaji, Margao,
Verna, Ponda, Mapusa, Vasco and Porvorim - in the WiMAX network. Other
places frequented by tourists - the airport, the more popular beaches
and major railway stations - will also be brought within the umbrella.
Tourists are generally technology-savvy and use the internet to stay in
touch with home, a senior BSNL official explained. It will change the
way people access internet, BSNL Goa general manager G R Ravi said. We
will try to roll out this service in six months, he added.

WiMAX uses microwave radio frequency instead of cables with the aid of
the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). It is the size of a land-line
telephone and can be lugged along so that you can access the worldwide
web, wire-free, at both home and office or your friend's place on a
weekend (provided all these places are within the WiMAX umbrella).

This would not be enough. The following additional
prescriptions would be needed:

g) Amend the constitution of India to grant an
exclusive and special status for Goa because of some
valid reason, such as the cultural superiority of its
people.

fc: Too much hassle with raucous Indian MPs disrupting parliament. A
bagfull of Goan terminators (read vavoi ) will do the necessary work on the
Constitution. Then we can draft a new one with mandatory public hearings.
Menezes Braganza hall management will be laughing all the way to the bank.
:-)

h) If other states do not ratify this amendment, let
the Goan state secede from India and become an
independent nation.

fc: No constitution, we get out. Besides, Goan Paklo in New Jersey will be
having a 21st century fire-works show.

i) Ban marriages between Goans and non-Goans
forthwith.

fc: If Goa need one more avenue to increase corruption. A non-goan becomes a
goan is a better way to fight corruption.

j) Amend inheritance laws to prevent foreign children
and descendants of Goans from inheriting ancestral
property.

fc: I oppose this with a black flag. I have left everything I have,
including my 1975 scooter to my grandson who is Austrian.

k) Frame the constitution of the independent Goa in
such a way as to disallow any form of legal
immigration of non-Goans or foreign descendants of
Goan ancestors.

fc: I oppose this with a amber flag. Goa shud have no constitution. We need
to be modern, free for all country.

l) Build a fence around Goa to prevent illegal
immigration.

fc: I shall wave a green flag provided I get the contract to build it. I am
a builder.

m) Prosecute people who employ illegal aliens.

fc: Can you see the black flag? Impossible. I will need entire Karnataka to
build that wall. How else can I take the contract?

n) To preserve Goan identity, legally ban all
religious conversions, perpetuate the caste system,
prevent Goans from adopting the ways of other
cultures, ban foreign companies from setting up shop
in Goa, and make strict laws against all forms of
modernization that involve infusion of foreign
practices in Goan affairs.

fc: With no constitution, let us wipe goa clean of all religions and make it
religionless or (AGNOSTIC). Naturally, all religious professionals will be
unemployed. Therefore let them use the open door policy to migrate anywhere
and everywhere to look for work. Then we shall have no need for PIs like
Manjunath Dessai to create communal strife like in Ponda recently. I think
Vatican will have to be expanded :-)

I am sure there are many other measures that need to
be adopted as well.

fc: When you coin them up, let me know.

Cheers,

fc: Have fun

To Goanet -

The Corporation for the City of Panjim (CCP)
Commissioner has furnished this telephone
number for his Enforcement Squad appointed
recently to deal with violations of city
laws and norms. Panjim residents should
report their problems and see if the squad
is any good (which, if history is any guide,
I doubt it is).

[Goanet] Goan Director of IT has vanished --- Chief Secretary J. P. Singh

2008-05-06 Thread Samir Kelekar

 Check this out, guys.
This is the real state of affairs in Goa.

The act of committing a scam and vanishing is
 pre-planned.

 regards,
 Samir

Parrikar says govt faltered in signing agreement
 with
 UTL
 From NT Staff

PanajiAlleging that the government has faltered in
signing an agreement with the Bangalore-based United
Telecoms Ltd (UTL) for the establishment of
 broadband
network in the state and there was a corruption
 angle
to the same, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr
 Manohar
Parrikar today demanded immediate termination of the
 contract.

Mr Parrikar, addressing a press conference, this
morning further demanded that as the UTL has not
 been
able to complete even 50 per cent of the work in the
first phase of the project, long after ending of the
deadline, the task be handed over to the BSNL.

“The government, after the completion of the
 project
will have to pay a minimum annual sum of Rs 28 crore
to the UTL, while the amount to be paid to the BSNL
 -
which already has such a service available with it -
is around Rs 3 to 4 crore, per year,” he pointed
 out.

“If the project is handed over to the BSNL at this
point of time then it will connect 2 telephone
exchanges to the broadband network per day, and
complete the connectivity of all 90 exchanges within
two-and-a half months,” Mr Parrikar stated.

It may be recalled that the government has already
sent notices to the UTL for delay in completion of
 the
 project.

Reacting to the same, Mr Parrikar said that though
 the
notices have been issued to the company, they may
 very
 well be defective.

“In fact, as per the information provided by the
Chief Secretary, Mr J P Singh, the director of
information technology, Mr M N Rao has vanished,”
 he
 added.

Terming the broadband project as the second source
 of
drain - the first being Reliance power project - on
the state exchequer, in long term, Mr Parrikar said
that the inauguration of the first phase of the
project at the hands of the Prime Minister, Dr
Manmohan Singh, without even completion of 50 per
 cent
work has put Dr Singh in an embarrassing situation.
“The heads should roll for this error,” he
 demanded.

The Leader of the Opposition further questioned as
 to
why the government wanted to set up a parallel
broadband network when the BSNL broadband network
 already existed.

Maintaining that the UTL broadband network project
 is
10 times costly, Mr Parrikar said that the
 government
did not take cheaper alternatives into consideration
before signing the agreement with the UTL.

The Leader of the Opposition also came out heavily
against the power situation in the state wherein in
spite of being a power surplus state - with the
exception of peak hours - Goa did not capitalise on
the same because of the uncontrolled nature of power
 transactions and corruption.

He also alleged that the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar
Kamat, who was the former power minister, is a party
 to the same.

Mr Parrikar pointed out that the government is going
 for legalising illegal connections, with
 regularisation of expanded capacities.

“I strongly demand that the Power Minister, Mr
Aleixo Sequeira withdraw this extra load,” he
 maintained.

Goa has soo many IT People residing in Villages. Yet many villages are still
to get connected via Broadband.
Provide Goa with High Speed Internet in Village first, We're in the 21st
century not in the 18 Century to use Dial-up.

Thanks,

Re: [Goanet] Study in Australia - A query

2008-05-06 Thread Bosco D'Mello

My friend's son got a scholarship to study in Australia (Perth).
She says he needed to show a (surety bond? of Rs,19 lacs) to get entry
into Australia (?)
Can any one come back on this to say if it is true that they ask such a
huge amount as surety ?

RESPONSE: I can't reconcile scholarship and 'surety bond'. Perhaps its not a
scholarship but just an admission into a program?? And it also depends on
the program.

From a Canadian perspective. 19lacs is loose change. Somebody I know (from
Goa) applied to a Grad program (medical) at the University of Toronto for a
program that commences Sep 08. The financial guarantees requested and
submitted were a little over 2.5 times 19lacs. The admission was rejected on
some convoluted grounds. Polite response - too many undergrads chasing a
seat in the program vis-a-vis Preference to citizens and immigrants.
