Even if one believes that some human flesh and blood were detected, the investigator would have to prove: a) that they are from the 8th century, b) that they indeed miraculously emerged from inanimate material, and c) that they belonged to the right person. If you read the original 1971 paper, as I have done, you will find out that none of these things were ever done. In fact, the tests used to detect blood would today be deemed unreliable. Even so, the so-called blood samples failed two of those tests, and the amount of calcium measured in those samples was found to be 28 times higher than its concentration in normal human blood under similar conditions. I have already explained the fallacy regarding type AB blood, and the well-known repeated scientific demonstrations that the Shroud of Turin is a 13th century artifact. Cheers, Santosh

[Goanet] official language
It must be appreciated that CM has said that its time to settle the issue of Official Language once n for all. Well its true and needs to be addressed if at all the official language is to flourish. Lets not make it look like Hindus v/s Christian issue. Konkani in Roman Script is not dear to me but Konkani as Sole official language is. But please do not get misguided. For christians, and for that matter, every Goan, Konkani is the mother tongue. Thats y the Hindus in Goa are known as Konknnes not hindus, cause we are konkans. Somehow we christians have not got that label even though we are proud of it. We are Konknees first and then kristaum n hindus. Well i am not denying the fact that Marathi used to be language of the temples because of the relationship of the dominant maharashtrian influence on the hindu lifestlye, but it was not the language at homes. Even Christians used Latin for religious rites very long time back, but that dint mean latin would be our language. today the govt is funding migrant schools in urdu and kannada for the migrants. But Konkani is not even a subject in this schools. Is this the govt of Goans. Digamber is pumping 50 crores on urdu schools in margao. [Goanet] Ref: DABOLIM AIRPORT SUFFERS SETBACK
What extra economics benefits will Goa get through Mopa, that we cannotget through Dabolim, if Dabolim airport is developed? Any takers ? Like thesaying goes do not take from the mouth of your children and offer it tooutsiders when the lives of your very own are at stake and that's preciselywhat's going to happen, the Mopa airport will benefit Maharashtra more than Goa,I am sure Maharashtra must be just waiting for the Mopa project to start and seehow fast the other side of the border will develop and reap the harvest fromwhat Goa will sow and at Goa's expense and South and central Goa will slowly dryup. Is that, what our Politicians want ? [Freddy Agnelo Fernandes] This may be an emotional and choral complaint. Let us look at the problem objectively. What is the propblem? Something about unequal competition from Maharashtra if Mopa gets underway. Goa's breadbasket is tourism so presumably that is what will get hit. The bellweather of Goa tourism is charter flights. Why shift charter flights to Mopa? Keep them at Dabolim. One problem solved? Then there are the famous/notorious attractions of North Goa beaches. Are these migrating to south Maharashtra? Maybe they attract a younger crowd. The charter tourists are mostly older types. So until the charter tourism demographics change and charter flights are allowed into Mopa there shouldnt be a problem of Maharshtra eating Goa's lunch. So the solution is smple. Do not make Mopa an international airport. Keep it a regional airport catering to small town airports emerging in surrounding areas and secondary airports of metros if any. It will play second fiddle to Dabolim and hopefully grow over time as the market expands due to economic growth and improved air connectivity.
[Goanet] New age flying
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Asian airlines shed `flab' to cut fuel costs With every gram carried on board equating to fuel, airlines are taking a closer look at what's on board and making some inventive changes to cut their fuel costs. http://news.in.msn.com/business/article.aspx?cp-documentid=1650070 Hong Kong: Lighter lunches, less alcohol and even streamlined cutlery are on the menu on Asian airlines as they shed excess weight in scores of little ways in a bid to cut down escalating fuel costs. With every gram carried on board equating to fuel, airlines are taking a closer look at what's on board and making some inventive changes to cut their fuel costs - some which passengers may notice, others they won't. These include using lighter cutlery with in-flight meals, cutting down on the amount of wine, beer and water carried on board and even ditching heavyweight magazines in favour of more lightweight reading - literally. Japan's largest airliner Japan Airlines Corp (JAL) has shaved 2.5 kg per flight by introducing spoons and forks that are two gm lighter for its non-business class passengers. Its in-flight audio programmes have also been made a few pages thinner by squashing Japanese and English text side-by-side. However, the most weight being lifted is in the cargo section where JAL has introduced glass fibre containers to cut some 26 km per load. All Nippon Airways Co (ANA), meanwhile, have decided to stock its alcohol section with quarter bottles of wine instead of full bottles, but has assured passengers that this will not lead them to run out mid-route, insisting: we had loaded too much before. The company has also changed seats on domestic flight planes - introducing a lighter carbon fibre seat frame that reportedly will save the airline 40,000 litres per aircraft each year. For passengers it has brought welcomed widened legroom, according to a spokesman, although the downside is reduced cushion in their seats. Other airlines are taking more short-term measures. Singapore Airlines has already introduced lightweight carts and service-ware for meals on board its new A380, the world's largest passenger jet - a move which will eventually be extended to other aircraft. We're also eliminating heavy magazines and opting for lightweight reading instead, said a spokesperson, although he declined to reveal the publications that would be scrapped. Thai Aiways International (THAI) is seeking to reduce its weight load by skimping on fuel reserves, a policy that might cause some jitters among passengers although the airline insists the policy is in keeping with European safety standards. The national carrier is aiming to halve its contingency fuel reserves as part of its weight-loss measures. One THAI executive said such a move on the Bangkok-London route, for instance, would mean shedding about two tonnes in weight - amounting to a fuel reduction that would save $800. In the Philippines, airlines have taken less innovative measures to cut weight. Flagship carrier Philippine Airlines has already limited free checked in baggage to 23 kg on its North American service, while domestic carrier Air Philippines has cut its daily service from Manila to three southern cities. Others are looking to more expensive, long-term methods such as replacing their fuel guzzling aircraft with more fuel-efficient aircraft. The same move is being employed by Hong Kong's flagship airline Cathay Pacific, which sees fuel-efficient aircraft and route management as the key to saving fuel. **But the prize for the most innovative weight watching has to go to India's Kingfisher, which has admitted saving pennies on their fuel bill by reducing the amount of washroom water carried on board. They are encouraging passengers not to spend a penny (visit the washroom). Our planes are flying with half or less than half-filled water tank as it lightens the load and reduces fuel consumption. And we are not the only airline doing this, a Kingfisher airline senior official told the Daily Telegraph. With experts claiming that every flush at 30,000 feet saves enough fuel to power a car for 10 km, this move is not as silly as you would first think.** As the well-worn adage goes: Every little bit helps. All this is fine. But who will tell the Indian government to make the really big changes like straightening out circuitous air routes (which presently try to avoid the plethora of military bases) and reducing congestion at airports (especially civil enclaves like Dabolim which have to enforce onerous slot restrictions). Until then we would be Kingfisher-style penny wise and pound (currency as well as weight) foolish.

[Goanet] Unruly Brits unwelcome in Europe Resorts - New York Times
Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/world/europe/24crete.html?_r=2oref=loginref=todayspaperpagewanted=alloref=slogin - Some Britons Too Unruly for Resorts in Europe By SARAH LYALL Published: August 23, 2008 MALIA, Greece — Even in a sea of tourists, it is easy to spot the Britons here on the northeast coast of Crete, and not just from the telltale pallor of their sun-deprived northern skin. They are the ones, the locals say, who are carousing, brawling and getting violently sick. They are the ones crowding into health clinics seeking morning-after pills and help for sexually transmitted diseases. They are the ones who seem to have one vacation plan: drinking themselves into oblivion. They scream, they sing, they fall down, they take their clothes off, they cross-dress, they vomit, Malia's mayor, Konstantinos Lagoudakis, said in an interview. It is only the British people — not the Germans or the French. Malia is the latest and currently most notorious in a long list of European resorts full of young British tourists on packaged tours offering cheap alcohol and a license to behave badly. In Magaluf and Ibiza, Spain; in Ayia Napa, Cyprus; and in the Greek resorts of Faliraki, Kavos and Laganas as well as Malia, the story is the same: They come, they drink, they wreak havoc. The government of Britain has to do something, Mr. Lagoudakis said. These people are giving a bad name to their country. They are also hurting themselves in the process. A recent report published by the British Foreign Office, British Behavior Abroad, noted that in a 12-month period in 2006 and 2007, 602 Britons were hospitalized and 28 raped in Greece, and that 1,591 died in Spain and 2,032 were arrested there. The report did not distinguish between medical cases and arrests associated with drunkenness and those that had nothing to do with it. But it did say that many arrests are due to behavior caused by excessive drinking. So it would seem. Reports of scandalous incidents rumble on regularly here and elsewhere, helping to cement Britain's reputation as the largest exporter of inebriated hooligans in Europe. Earlier this summer, flying home to Manchester from the Greek island of Kos, a pair of drunken women yelling I need some fresh air attacked the flight attendants with a vodka bottle and tried to wrestle the airplane's emergency door open at 30,000 feet. The plane diverted hastily to Frankfurt, and the women were arrested. In Laganas, on the Greek island of Zakinthos, where a teenager from Sheffield died after a drinking binge this summer, more than a dozen British women were charged in July with prostitution after taking part, the authorities said, in an alfresco oral sex contest. More alarmingly, a 20-year-old British tourist partied with her sister and a friend into the early hours in Malia also in July, then returned to her hotel room and — although she had denied being pregnant — gave birth. Her companions say they returned later to find the baby dead; she has been charged with infanticide. And in Dubai, also this summer, a British man and woman who met during a drinking bout were arrested and charged with having sex on a beach, after repeatedly shouting abuse at a police officer who ordered them to stop. All of which leads to a natural question: Why? I think that in their country, they are like prisoners and they want to feel free, said Niki Pirovolaki, who works in a bakery on Malia's main street and often encounters addled Britons heading back to their hotels — if they can remember where they are staying, she said. David Familton, a Briton who works in a club here, said that it was a question of emotional comfort. It's because of British culture — no one can relax, so they become inebriated to be the people they want to be, he said. Worried about the increase in crimes and accidents afflicting drunken tourists, the British consulate in Athens has begun several campaigns, using posters, beach balls and coasters with snappy slogans, to encourage young visitors to drink responsibly. When things do go wrong, they go wrong in quite a big way, said Alison Beckett, the director of consular services. What we're trying to do here is reduce some of these avoidable accidents where they have so much to drink that they fall off balconies and are either killed or need huge operations. As much as they depend on the tourists' money, the resorts are balking at their behavior. Last year, shopkeepers, residents and hotel owners in Malia held an angry anti-British demonstration. Now, 20 officers patrol the notorious 1,000-foot-long strip of bars and clubs catering to tourists in the center of town, keeping the peace, breaking up fights and making arrests. Local officials say the blame lies not just with the tourists themselves, but also with the operators of package tours promising drinking-and-partying vacations, and clubs offering industrial-strength alcohol at rock-bottom prices. For about $50 in Malia,

While Rajeev is the son of S S Mishra, the landlord of the house, Bhupinder was a resident of Shastri Nagar. Mishra, a retired Kanpur Electric Supply Company employee, lives in the nearby Nankari village. He had rented a few rooms of his house to several students. Rajeev's occupied the room in which the blast took place. As he works in Lucknow, he used to visit the place on Sundays. According to the police, while Bhupinder died on the spot, Rajeev died on his way to hospital. According to a senior police officer, the material found could have been used for several explosions. Of the seven timers recovered, two were attached with batteries with the help of wires. The country made hand grenades recovered were similar to those used by the defence forces. The Urdu daily claimed that Bhupinder singh was a Bajarangdal leader, according to the National convenor of Bajarangdal, Bhupinder Singh was Ex convenor of Bajarangdal but now he was working as activist. It is reported that Piyush, who used to work as a complaint officer in a mobile company in Lucknow, came home with Bhupinder and asked the residents of the hostel to vacate the rooms on the pretext of checking the electric wiring. Shiv Sharan Mishra, Rajiv's father, a retired employee of Kesko had built this private hostel, which had nine rooms and 14 students stayed in the hostel and Rajiv had kept one room for himself. As soon as the occupants left the hostel, a massive blast took place. Recovery of a timer device and prohibited explosive raw materials show that a major terror plot was being hatched there. Bhupinder used to run a photo studio in the Sarvoday Nagar locality of Kanpur and his shop was close to the city's popular J.K. temple, police said. According to the police the explosives were meant to be spread during Sunday's celebrations. On monday police recovered some crude hand grenades, lead oxide, red lead, potassium nitrate, bomb pins, timers and batterires from the spot. The police felt that the quantity of explosives stored there was enough to destroy half of Kanpur. The most notable fact about the perpetrators of this conspiracy, who died during this explosion, is that both of them belonged to Bajrang Dal, the 'storm troopper' wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The leaders of the Bajrang Dal have conceded that they 'worked with the organisation' some time back and one of them happened to be the convenor of the city wing. Looking at the nature of the crime, and the fact that a major tragedy could be averted, it is expected that the state government with necessary help from the central government would try to unearth the real conspirators who were behind the plan. It is a positive sign that the police have recovered mobiles of both of them and now if they wish they can take the case to its logical end. After the blast in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, all fingers were pointed towards Muslims. Intelligence along with Media would hide all reports and facts that would point fingers towards the non Muslim communities. Now this explosion may point the finger the other day. Senior congress leader Dig Vijay Singh had said in an interview with Tehelka that he had evidence of Of RSS and VHP making bombs. Now, this explosion may prove that Dig Vijay may be right. Also Read I Have Evidence Of RSS And VHP Making Bombs:Digvijay Singh By Neha Dixit Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh attacks the BJP just like Sushma Swaraj attacked the Congress. - Original Message - From: Rajan P. Parrikar [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 25, 2008 9:21 PM Subject: Re: [Goanet] GOA: Lawyer's bid to clean Augean stable To Goanet - First of all, kudos to Sudha. This begs a few questions - 1) Was this major scandal published in any of the local dailies? If not, why not? 2) What are all the activists going to do now? These are grounds for an all-Goa agitation to demand resignation of the 2 ministers and force a criminal inquiry. Are the activists up to it? 3) Shouldn't we be calling for a moratorium on all construction in Goa until a thorough investigation is launched and the impact of the land conversion scandals, building violations, environmental damage etc is assessed? For this is an endemic and NOT an isolated instance. r Lawyer's bid to clean Augean stable Devika Sequeira in Panaji devikasequeira at gmail.com Deccan Herald, August 24, 2008 Sunday Features Pai Kir's complaint against the judge and the High Court's enquiry has also brought to light the shocking complicity of the judge, a group of lawyers and two ministers in the Goa Government in transacting an illegal land deal. Exasperated by the level of corruption in the rural court where she practised, lawyer Sudha Pai Kir moved her practice from Canacona, South Goa to the High Court in Panaji. Almost two years on, the gritty 33-year-old has much to celebrate. Her persistence to see justice done has brought on the dismissal of a judge. In June this year, Chief Justice Swatantra Kumar of the Bombay High Court sacked Judge Shekhar V Parab, who was posted at Canacona, for gross impropriety. Pai Kir's complaint against the judge for harassment which compelled her to withdraw her practice in Canacona and the High Court's enquiry has also brought to light the shocking complicity of the judge, a group of lawyers and two ministers of the Goa Government in transacting an illegal land deal. Ministers Vishwajeet Rane and Babush Monserrate were present with Judge Parab in a five star hotel where some of the illiterate owners were forced to hand over their property in Loliem, Canacona to a Delhi hotel group, the enquiry revealed. The High Court's enquiry against Parab said: During the course of discreet enquiry conducted by V G Bisht, Registrar, High Court, Appellate Side, Bombay, on the instructions of the Chief Justice, it transpired that the son of an ex-chief minister of Goa was interested in the property involved in RCS No 36/2002 and Parab had taken keen interest in the settlement of the said suit for extraneous considerations. It also transpired during the course of the discreet enquiry, that Parab was present in the Hotel Intercontinental also known as Diksha Hotel with Vishwajeet Rane, son of Pratapsingh Rane, ex-chief minister of Goa, the sub-registrar and his clerk and others at the time of execution of the sale deed of the land forming the subject matter of RCS No 36/2002. One of the co-owners of the property Vishnu Chandru Gaonkar told the enquiry officer that he was forcibly made to put his signature on the sale deed executed in the five star hotel in the presence of the dismissed judge, Rane, Monserrate, former MLA Isidore Fernandes and lawyers Vijay Gaykar and Narayan M Dessai. Thereafter, crores of rupees were distributed by the non-Goan party, ie the purchaser to all others who were present in the said hotel. Three other co-owners of the property told the enquiry that they were also forced to sign the sale deed in the presence of Judge Parab. A subsequent criminal enquiry has been ordered by the courts here in the same land deal against lawyer Narayan Dessai and eight of his clients for forging the thumb impression of one of the co-owners, who had expired. Like most pristine seaside taluks in Goa, Canacona has become the focus of greedy land sharks and in danger of institutionalising a network of corruption, warns Pai Kir. This case is only a start in cleaning up the system. Immediate measures are needed to set things right in Canacona, she says. COMMENTS: If anyone should ask me 'what next?' I would want to say that the newly floated CITIZENS' [OF GOA] INITIATIVE is the right forum to head Goa's chorus against the above political culprits (and most others) having being red-handed caught with their pants down, so to speak. This is the GOD GIVEN 'GOLDEN' chance for Goa and Goans to start burrying the first spade into the political dirty which has accumulated in Goa since 1961, towards the POLITICAL CLEANSING. This cannot and will not be achieved unless the so called 'good' persons come out and show their willingness to participate in electoral politics, on a written down program, so that very good intentions exhibited in the initial stages do not take a walk around later , like we have seen happening most of the time. Declare what needs to be done and then go ahead doing just that . a suggested example
Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader -- Diverse roots, varied challenges -- the Goan diaspora in the UK (Dr Eddie D'Sa, in Goa Aparanta...)
2008/8/25 Goanet Reader [EMAIL PROTECTED]: DIVERSE ROOTS, VARIED CHALLENGES: THE GOAN DIASPORA IN THE U.K. This essay is from the book 'Goa: Aparanta -- Land Beyond the End', edited by Victor Rangel Ribeiro [EMAIL PROTECTED], and reflects Dr Eddie D'Sa's analysis of Goans in Britain, and how their attitudes towards Goa have changed generation by generation. In Britain, Feeling a Weaker Pull (pages 210-12) is a very wise bit of writing, commented the editor of this book. By Eddie D'Sa [EMAIL PROTECTED] Between 15,000 and 20,000 Goans are concentrated in the greater London area, with a few thousand more in Leicester, RESPONSE: There are a some misconceptions in the above post, which need correcting. I seriously doubt, if there are more than a thousand Resident Goans in Leicester - a few hundred perhaps. Swindon has thousands, mostly through holding Portuguese Passports. The Goan Association In the U.K. was formed in 1965 with 17 Goans signing a letter of intent at one of the rooms at Caxton Hall, Westminster. The G.O.A. U.K. entered into a contract to purchase Property (Flat) in Ilford, which cost £325,000; this was a buy to let investment. This particular segment was fallen out of bed, although the rental income is guaranteed for the first year. By next year the Association shall, no doubt, subsidize the tenant. Also the property is probably worth just over £200,000 at current market rates. It would be fair to state that the Goan Association has been through many trials and tribulations. Many of the problems were deliberately engineered by persons who had an axe to grind, because they were sidelined, or those who made their Annual appearance at the A.G.M's and wanted to do the 'dance of the Peacock' Having been castigated, the major portion of our Board resigned. One would have thought that the membership wanted this and would have been happy! On the contrary they begged us to stay on. I left the keys to the existing Board member and walked out. The spoilers got their way, we do not have a Club House/grounds and all we can do is arrange dances. Many Goans met their partners because of the Club. Now parents are complaining that their daughters are being left high and dry. The boys are okay they have no biological clock ticking issues. Now the Association is running property, instead of a Club House; our previous Bankers had written, explicitly to inform us, that we were not in business of running property. I wrote to the Board of Directors w.r.t this, I was ignored and did not even get an acknowledgement. We have issues which several think tanks, forums, brain storming sessions and pleas to membership for resolutions, all failed miserably. It seems to be that the Association and the Village organisations are quite content with their lot. Bye bye the Goan identity, we shall go before the Welsh and the Scots. By 2025 people will be asking who are Goans! Lastly, I don't know how the Saligao Association is run; to my knowledge most other Villages, do put on the table every year, the achievements and the dispersal of funds generated at the Socials...the beneficiaries being their respective Village in Goa. -- DEV BOREM KORUM. Initiated by Rajiv D'Silva and Harshvardhan Bhatkuly, whose organisation Quizco has been giving school and college students in the state something to think about for a while now, SEQC meets on the first Sunday of each month. It's done so twice so far, and the fourth session is planned for August 31. Details are given below, and anyone interested is welcome to land up. For more details, check out the SEQC blog at http://seqc.blogspot.com/ Aniruddha Sen Gupta Porvorim, Goa --- Barring any major natural disasters or terrorist attacks, the next meeting of the SEQC will take place this weekend. This one has all the makings of a LONG one, so please get there on time. Date: 31st August 2008 Time: 5.00 pm. (The quiz will start at 5.30 sharp, allowing for 30 mins to form teams and engage in idle conversation) QM: Rajiv D'Silva Flavour: General Venue: Rajiv Tallulah's place - 4T4, Dukle Residency, St. Inez - Panaji How to get there: If you're driving from the Panaji side, come to the high-mast lamp in front of Madhuban Building, and take the right fork at the Y-junction. About 500 mts. after the junction, just at the s-turn, is a beige-ish building on the left-hand side called Dukle Residency. Come up the 4th staircase to the third floor. If you're not the first to arrive, you'll probably hear some raucous laughing. That means the 'idle conversation' part is underway. Alternatively, ask for where 'Branco Restaurant' is - its a minor landmark in the area. Dukle Residency is bang opposite it. If you're driving from the Taleigao side, take 'Jennifer Monserrate Road' - the new road the connects Taleigao Church to St.Inez - and the building is the first one on the right hand side after the fields stop. [Goanet] DABOLIM AIRPORT SUFFERS SETBACK
Philip Thomas wrote: So the solution is smple. Do not make Mopa an international airport. Keep it a regional airport catering to small town airports emerging in surrounding areas and secondary airports of metros if any. It will play second fiddle to Dabolim and hopefully grow over time as the market expands due to economic growth and improved air connectivity. Comment: I am very clear in my mind on certain issues- 1.a decision of this magnitude not made on studies of financial viability is per se a bad decision. 2.It is logical that only one airport can sustain economically and that will be the new airport because all traffic will be diverted there to enable the airport to break even and make profits for its entrepreneurs. 3. recent history is a guide that wherever new airports have come up, the old ones have closed down. 4.airports set up not on principes of need but vested interests will never be a popular decision. 5.the infrastructure for setting up the new airport is going to result in further denuding the green forest areas, displacement of people, land grab, concretisation and sundry other social ills. For the GBA, GPA, etc. this is going to become a full time occupation. 6. I am not convinced why the government could not intensify its efforts to move the navy to Karwar and upgrade the Dabolim airlort which would cost much less. regards, Marshall

Comment: I would read a lot of hidden meaning in this suggestion. I do not see why Marathi protogonists have to be co-opted into a committee to take a decision on according equal legal status to Konkani in the Roman script.I would not be surprised if it is a back-door attempt to secure official and equal status for Marathi by blackmailing the Konkani (Roman script) protogonists by conceding them equal status for Konkani in the roman script in exchange for official status for Marathi. [Goanet] Miracles - In Defence of Fr. Ivo
Fr. Ivo writes of faith and miracles and there are pseudo-scientists and some men of learning on this forum who think that their education qualifies them to deny God and his existence. They deny that miracles happen, not knowing what really is a miracle. They probably have had many miracles in their own lives, but instead of acknowledging divine providence, they think some quality of their human existence has been responsible for it. I have no problem with people who have no faith. They have arrived at a certain conclusion in their lives and are responsible for whatever implications flow from it. But when these people try to foist their reasoning onto others with some intention of 'enlightenment transfer' then it becomes patronizing and condescending. Perhaps all these arguments of miracles has become incumbent on me to recount two of the very own I have experienced. Let me hasten to add that I am neither deserving of 'miracles' nor ask for them. They occurred nevertheless. I was about 15 and it was the brashness of youth and the appearance of 'cool' that made me wait for every person to board the Bombay local train before I would do so. There were no closing doors so I would hang on, two hands clinging to the curve of the roof on a fast train. I did this many times, enjoying the cool breeze of the speeding train, complementing myself on avoiding all those sweaty bodies within. One day on a train that was late and more crowded than usual, I repeated this manoeuvre. It was a 'fast train' and had just started from its halt at Bandra. As Khar passed, the crowd within began to stir. This is what they usually do in order to get ready to alight at the next stop which would be Andheri. Come Santa Cruz the crowd became even more swirling and the whole pressure was against my torso. I yelled at the danger to me but it seemed no one listened. The pressure on my fingers holding to dear life and supporting my entire body from falling off, became unbearable. It seemed that Vile Parle another station would never come. The pain was so intense that it became so tempting to let go and experience relief by just falling to death. Some extraordinary power external to myself made me lift one leg from the ground (I was now supported by just fingers and one leg) and kick with superhuman force the person just next to me. He moved a little and so did the rest behind him. I could hold on now and Andheri swept into view. As soon as the platform appeared, I jumped on it, running, dropping but alive. At another time, I was driving my new car at about 120 kmph on a snowing day on Highway 401, a major Toronto arterial road. The highways were cleared of snow by salters and sanders but I should not have been going at that speed in that weather. Snow banks were piled on either side by the ploughs and they formed high banks, 3 feet tall. I was late for an appointment which was why I was speeding. I almost missed the turn that led to the Don Valley Parkway which I needed to take to reach downtown. I panicked and swerved to meet the turn, and slid through a slush of wet snow that removed any traction that I needed to stay on the road. My car spun like a top and smashed into the guardrail at a speed greater than I was going. I should have been dead at the stop, but I was merely dazed. A speeding trailer truck swished by. A second earlier and it would have rammed into me, smashing my car to smithereens. The next speeding vehicle was a huge tow truck who had seen my plight. The driver had reflexes like lightning (they all do). He braked his truck and stopped beside me, affording a protective screen to the next speeding vehicle. His truck was pounded by a couple of passing vehicles, but it stood firm while he helped me out of the car. He asked me if I was OK and he said simply you have defied death. From: J. Colaco jc [EMAIL PROTECTED] Using a selectively mutilated quote of what I (jc) had written i.e. ***Sorry, Dr.Jose Colaço, for keeping your quote shortened. This happened by mistake (not selectively mutilated)--the first words were deleted by mistake and I added check if:. Nothing was distorted. The logical meaning is the same. I understand it well. I gave you the answer not hastily, but according to the understanding that I have of the problem. For us who know so many languages, English is the easiest language... (Let me add here that Dr.JC cannot reply without insulting...) You want me to have all these requirements, namely to know medicine in all its branches, to review all the details of all the cases and to say that there is no other explanation for the cures? Dr.Santosh asked for a double-blind control (read below), admitting himself that this is difficult for such rare cases. The proposed method itself excludes all miracles. I think that these cases are rare and cannot have such a control, because they are too evident for the medical community. My answer is the same: The medical Bureau has verified all these criteria. I leaned on the expertise of the Medical Bureau and International Medical Panel, and our common sense and my own knowledge of medicine and data available. Even if an authority in medical field asserts it, Dr.Santosh will never accept that the incurable diseases were cured in those particular cases (which theologically means miracles). There will not be an authority in the world on all the branches of medicine, nor, as a consequence, such a person as to comprehend and judge all these cases. Dr.Santosh himself will not be able to do that. Nobody is bound to accept miracles--they are not magical feats, but signs of God's love--, nor am I bound to accept the scientific explanations given by Dr.Santosh. For me, these are miracles according to our prudential judgement. We can speak of them privately and in public domain. We call them miracles, precisely because they do not have a scientific explanation, and satisfy the required criteria. The Church accepts them officially as miracles. Dr.Santosh does not accept God, therefore he cannot accept miracles, nor can he explain reasonably these 'miraculous' phenomena... Regards. Fr.Ivo (*This is what Dr.JC had written:) ( In conclusion, I'd say this: The avenue open to anyone who wishes to counteract Santosh's position is the following: Advise us that he/she)(*this was deleted by mistake) (Chech if: (*This was added by me) a: has the requisite knowledge of the field of medicine in which the miracle is said to have occured b: has personally reviwed all the original details of the case. c: is able to say with confidence that there is NO other explanation for the 'cure'. About the method Dr.Santosh wrote on August 10: Simply put, any scientific procedure requires that properly blinded and objective researchers obtain quantitative data about the probability of occurrence of the phenomenon under observation in the special condition under study, and then compare this probability with that of its occurrence in a control (properly matched) group of people under appropriately controlled conditions.*(These are his words):Since the so-called miracles are by definition rare events, this is a monumental task. ...It should be obvious to those of you who have followed the logic here that if it turns out that two or more individuals from this latter group had also recovered spontaneously from the disease, then no particular benefit from the pilgrimage would be deemed to have occurred. Well, the actual situation is even more complicated than what I have just described, as those with some statistics background would realize. However, the impossibility of performing the above simplified, yet massive, project to scientifically demonstrate that anything extraordinary has occurred, should be fairly plain to most people.

[Goanet] Dr. Jose and Fr. Ivo (was Lourdes miracles)
--- On Tue, 8/26/08, Fr. Ivo C da Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dr.Santosh asked for a double-blind control (read below), admitting himself that this is difficult for such rare cases. The proposed method itself excludes all miracles. The proposed method is what is called scientific method. Only when one follows that method can one honestly claim that an intense scientific procedure was conducted, or whatever else Fr. Ivo has claimed with regard to the international medical panel. Otherwise, as I have said, it is simply a bureaucratic committee meeting deciding everything by majority vote, and asking people to take their word for it. But this exchange between Jose and Fr. Ivo illustrates my position quite well - a position that Fr. Ivo has never been able to grasp. Both Jose and Fr. Ivo are Catholics who believe in miracles. Jose has repeatedly admitted it in this forum, including this time around in his first post in the Lourdes miracles thread. However, in stark contrast to Fr. Ivo, Jose has always said that he believes in them because of his faith, just like my scientific colleague and friend Jean-Baptiste here in Houston. These men of science never claim that there is scientific evidence for their beliefs, or that someone has conducted an intense scientific procedure to confirm their beliefs, or that their scientific reasoning somehow supports what they believe based on faith. That is why I respect their position, and have no argument against their beliefs. Fr. Ivo, on the other hand, despite the fact that he does not come from a scientific background, persists in making all kinds of bogus scientific claims in support of his beliefs, and in misrepresenting the nature of science and its purpose, in the service of his faith. That is why I am compelled to respond to his pronouncements about science in this public forum. Had he confined himself to preaching his religion, and expressing his pure faith in miracles and the supernatural, devoid of any reference to science, as Fr. Botelho and others have done in the past, I would have left him alone. Cheers, Santosh

[Goanet] Discussion on Official Language Act 1987 in the Goa Assembly
Dear Marshall, I share your reasoning that there is no justification in including MARATHI protagonists in the discussion on KONKANI if the issue is limited to sorting out the rift of the SCRIPTS created intentionally by the Official Language Act, 1987 [When Pratapsingh Rane was CM. Dr. Wilfred de Souza then, as now, was not an MLA. Luizinho Faleiro (goa congress) and Adv. Uday Bhembre (independent) had NOT OPPOSED but 'walked out' before the vote on 04 February, 2008]. Having said that, Marathi need not be a bogey that frightens us even now because 1. Marathi has all the facilities that Konkani in Devangri has, save the label [It is not the Official Language but can be used for all Official Purposes] 2. There are 800-plus Marathi medium Govt. Primary Schools and less than 100 Konkani GPS. So the Goa govt. continues to promote Marathi. 3. Goa Marathi Academy gets almost as much grants form the Govt. as the Goa Konkani Academy [about Rs.15 million per year] plus it has a Rs 5 million grant for construction. 4. More applications and letters are received in Marathi in a month than in Konkani in a year by the Goa Govt. 5. More Marathi newspapers are sold in Goa in a day than all Konkani publications in all scripts in a month. [The Devanangri SUNAPARANT sells next to no copies each day and does not even have a full-time editor at present.] In contrast, Konkani written in the Roman script is 1.Not recognised as a LANGUAGE [leave alone Official Language] in Goa 2. Not taught in a single GPS 3. Has only been promised Rs.1.5 million BUT given no money thus far 4. Applications accepted by Goa govt but in insignificant numbers annually [GKA accepts applications in Romi lipi] 5.Does not have a daily newspaper [but the number of magazines is increasing] The blackmailers are NOT the Marathi lobby but, rather, the Devanagri lobby that is scared that it will lose control over the language if Romi is accepted. They are just being good ventriloquists. Do a caste analysis of the so-called Catholic priests [Catholics for Devanagri] who support the Devanagri and you will know that caste runs thicker than language just as in politics. Cast your vote and vote your caste. Pragmatic persons like Dr. ManoharRai Sardessai and Ulhas Buyao are few and far between. Kitle aile, gele Otthra Jun! ... Ambea mullant kuddkuddtta Gavddeacho por ozun! The use of the Konkani word chamar for a cobbler still creates ripples in the Goa Legislative Assembly. I wonder what the Gavddeacho por would say if someone asked or said Tum gavddo! Is it Ganv kospi to gavddo? as GAKUVEDPresident Durgadas Gaonkar says, or is it an insult. Personally, I care a damn about the OFFICIAL status for Konkani written in the Roman script. HOWEVER, the Goa Government cannot negate the existence of Konkani written in the Roman script by the ridiculous definition of Konkani means Konkani written in the Devanagri script in OLA, 1987. Why not simply state the truth that the Official language of Goa is ANTRUZI. It is now written exclusively in the Devanagri script though even Shenoi Goembab wrote in Romi once upon a time! Perhaps, those dozen books are NOT Konkani, either. Konkani written in Roman script is a PEPSI . nothing Official about it! Mog asundi. He had done thorough home work. One could see this the way he spoke and presented the matter in the house. He suggested to form a committee comprising MLAs , Marathi protagonists and Roman script Protagonists and within two months to come to a consensus on the language issue and to settle it based on the views of the majority. In fact, in the interview with Rajan Parrikar, if I remember correctly, Manohar Parrikar did make such a suggestion. It would be a pyrrhic victory for the roman script Konkani protogonists were this to happen. Re: [Goanet] Goanet Reader -- Diverse roots, varied challenges -- the Goan diaspora in the UK (Dr Eddie D'Sa, in Goa Aparanta...)
DIVERSE ROOTS, VARIED CHALLENGES: THE GOAN DIASPORA IN THE U.K. As a result, the Association possesses substantial funds but no new physical premises -- nor a new vision. A slimmed down version of the old social programme continues -- the main event being the annual day-long get-together ('festival') on hired school grounds in the last Sunday of July. It draws a thousand or more Goans from far and wide but with no thought provoking agenda, the crowds simply meander about the grounds -- pausing at food or lucky-dip stalls, imbibing at the bar, standing to listen to some impromptu songs and skits. It is a pity that the occasion is not also used to monitor the community's shifting views and concerns. This, in my view, is a lost opportunity. Folks, I know from experience (both in E. Africa and Canada) that Goans will assemble in large numbers when social or sports events are offered. You will, however, only get a handful of people attending when serious matters need to be discussed. The recent GNAT convention is a prime example. We had 400 people at the ball and only a quarter of those at the conference itself. Here in Toronto, the GOA is run by a few dedicated workers. The GOA is now expanding its wings by exploring the possibility of building a retirement home for seniors. There is a lot of work involved here. See below: --- LIFE LEASE HOUSING PROJECT INFORMATION MEETINGS FOR THE GOAN AND INDO CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY The Goan and Canorient Seniors' Clubs, the GOA and the GCO, invite you to an information meeting, to learn about a Life Lease Housing Project, for the Goan and Indo Christian (Manglorean, East and Anglo Indian, etc.) Community Seniors' in the GTA. The concept of Life Lease Housing is a Community based multi unit dwelling developed for Active Seniors, which would be equity financed by the prospective resident, who would be seeking to downsize in the next 5 to 7 years. The resident has the right to sell the Lease on the unit at market value or pass it down through the estate. The project would also be of interest to children who wish to purchase housing for aging parents and later move into it themselves and to investors who would purchase a unit to rent out to a Senior resident. The Life Lease Housing Project will be sponsored by the Goan Charitable Organisation, which will have the benefit of obtaining GST and PST rebates on the building construction costs and savings on the Land Transfer Tax, which combined with the lower base cost, will price the units below the new condominium market value. The building will be designed for Seniors' seeking an active life style and contain Social, Dining, Exercise, Medical and Religious facilities, similar to a modern Seniors' Residence. Location of the Project will be determined by the results of a Survey to be completed after the meeting. - Ugandan Goans have formed two bodies: the Uganda Reunion and Bakuli Reunion (a bakuli is a cooking vessel in Swahili). They share a common memory of the old days as well as the trauma of expulsion by Amin. Commemoration is in the form of an annual dance (preceded by Mass). Ugandan motifs decorate the hall and Ugandan produce (alcoholic beverage and bananas) is on sale. Don't know if the ex-Ugandans in Toronto are as active as in London. The most active group here is the ex-Tanzanians who have an annual dance, picnic, and a seniors day. Two London-based groups promote Goan music, dance, and drama. I believe we have at least two groups in Toronto too. Mervyn3.0 __ Instant Messaging, free SMS, sharing photos and more... Try the new Yahoo! Canada Messenger at http://ca.beta.messenger.yahoo.com/
[Goanet] Text of GBA Press Release of 26 Aug.2008: RPG 2021
Dears, Placed below is the full text of the Press Release issued by the Secretary spokesperson of the GBA as per the consensus arrived after detailed deliberations of the GBA Core Group held on 25 August, 2008. These are not the personal views of any single person but of the GBA as one body. The newspapers will carry the report as per their normal policies. The Memorandum signed by more than 6,500 people was submitted to the Goa Government on 22 December, 2006, asking for 1. Repeal of the RPG 2011 2. Involvement of the people of Goa in the planning process as envisioned in the 73rd and 74th amendment to the Constitution of India. 3. Reformulation of a new Regional Plan for Goa. The first was achieved in early 2007. However, with the Goa Government dithering on bringing its laws and processes in consonance with the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution of India, the formulation of the Regional Plan for Goa 2021 has been rendered incomplete. The GBA cooperated with the Task Force as a representative of the interests of the people of Goa with the sincere wish to partner with Government positively towards framing guidelines of planning as mentioned in Point 2 of GBA's memorandum. As we stand days away from the release of the Draft Regional Framework Plan we question the Governments motives due to a string of actions and inactions. GBA asks the Government to come clear on several questions that arise in the minds of the people: *Policies:* Are the policies that create the spatial Plan from the 'Top-Down' set that gave birth to SEZ's, Food Parks and Golf Courses, or do they reflect the people's aspirations for a better tomorrow? *Process:* Is there a transparent consultative process that ensures real people's participation towards policy in this Regional Plan or are the people merely to 'suggest' or 'object' but not plan, as in the case of ODPs? *Legal status:* Despite 16 years of existence of the 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments, why are the Goa TCP Act and Municipality Act not brought in consonance with the Constitution of India as in force and why are powers not being devolved to the Village Panchayats, Zilla Panchayats and DistrictPlanning Committees envisioned in the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, and notifications issued thereunder. *Integrity:* Why is the Goa Government, with its large administrative framework including Civil Service officers, lawyers and advisors, feigning ignorance of the constitutional requirements and methods, limiting the official methods for 'Peoples Participation' to simply 'Reaction' or objections allowed by the antiquated TCP Act of 1974 ? *Political Will:* The Task Force and the TCP Department accepted the formula for a pilot study of 6 villages and 3 municipalities that was presented to the Task Force by the CSJP and allied groups, also members of the GBA, as far back as December 2007. When the formula was appreciated and agreed to be commissioned by the Task Force, why has the Government not found the will to move forward on this? *Changing Goal posts:* # Even as the Government found itself 'Unable' to do this pilot study, how did it find the 'Will' to push through the anti-people amendments to Section 1616A of the TCP Act, vide Ordinance dated 29 February, 2008 and Act dated 13 May, 2008, which allow it complete and overriding powers to the Government effectively nullifying any Regional Plan. #Why have the Goa Land Development and Building Regulations been notified vide Gazette of 14th August 2008, Series I No. 20, even before the Task Force has finished formulating the Regional Plan? On 25th of August the GBA met to deliberate on these issues and made the following resolve. The GBA cannot be part of any planning process that does not include the people and their aspirations in a clear and substantial manner. It cannot support any plan that does not provide for proper participation. It cannot support a plan that can at any moment be subverted by the use of Section 16 and 16Aof TCP Act which legalizes all that was rejected in the Regional Plan 2011. The only sure way of ensuring that the peoples voice is heard and that power is devolved to them is

But the Romans could not tolerate a belief that altered their way of life. This was a major reason for the persecution of the apostles, leaders and believers of the early Church. DB's central theme that paganism affirmed women and the Church destroyed and killed them is absurd. Yet DB manages to combine fact and fiction - faction; that has real-life implications today - just like Guardian of the Dawn. If the readers of the two books do not believe that, the authors of both books are serious about the real-life implications of their work as seen from their press interviews.. GJ quotes a reference who points out that never in the history of human civilization, and prior to that, was there a matriarchal society. Humans went from being Hunter-Gatherers to societies that was into acquisition of lands and territories in a conquer or be conquered philosophy. All societies have had standing or stand-by armies; which were male dominated. The repression of women is undertaken by both 'age-old' cults and modern 'new age' movements by suggesting that sexual intercourse is the way for men to experience divinity. The logic 'uses' women in a patronizing manner for the elevation of men. This chapter introduces the concept of the sacred feminine which plays an important role in defining the hidden agenda of the novel. In later chapters, GJ describe the origin and concepts of goddess spirituality ... and ... free men and virgins which is an euphemism for spiritual and physical nakedness. These chapters also discuss parallels between ancient agnosticism and 'new age' spirituality. Regards, GL

2008/8/26 Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1: Both Jose and Fr. Ivo are Catholics who believe in miracles. 2: Jose has always said that he believes in them because of his faith Dear Santoshbab, May I agree with #1 above and disagree with #2 - as stated by you? In my clinical experience (of some years now) there have been some unexpected cures / recoveries. They have been amazing and wonderful occurrences inexplicable by our current knowledge. Until I find scientific explanations for the cures, I will call them miracles. It has nothing to do with my faith (i.e. religion). It has everything to do with my inability to find a scientific explanation for them. Permit me to add that I have a great deal of skepticism wrt the so called Faith Cures. For while Faith and a positive outlook to life help patients to deal with various illnesses, there is a dark side to thisespecially to blind faith followers. There is a Faith which forbids the use of blood transfusion even in life-threatening situations. Others will have their blind followers believe that Higher Sciences will cure serious brain infections, and still others (while not religious) has believers in miraculous cure of AIDS by the drinking of carrot juice. That is why I suggest that the Church needs to have an open investigation of unexplained cures. Was there an illness? Was it coincidentaly treated by a drug which was used for another purpose? Can there be another reason for the cure? Is it really a cure ? To do this, it must open the hearings to the various Scientific Societies. Until that happens, there will be no accountability for the decision. Secrecy of Committees is never beneficial to the credibility of the deliberation. Transparency is. This is my last posting on this thread. I'd like to suggest to Fr. Ivo that much of what he writes is near-unreadable. He may wish to correct this by formatting his posts adequately. At the moment, it comes across as a New Orleans Jambalaya. He takes much time and effort to write. I trust that he would please make it a wee bit easier for us to read what is written. good wishes jc

Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2008 21:02:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Rajan P. Parrikar [EMAIL PROTECTED] See below how the sarpanch is wriggling out of the situation. Why can't she revoke the license? Because this is standard operating procedure, of course. You authorize something, then have it regularized. Read that carefully. It means the law and rules mean nothing in India. You can break them at will and then get retrospective pardon. Wah! Great going supercoolies, ooops, I mean, superpower. See this in today's Herald - http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=8926cid=26 Sarpanch Rosy Barretto, when later contacted by newsmen said the gram Sabha has adopted a resolution against mega housing projects. She, however, ruled out revocation of the license granted for the row bungalows as demanded by the members, but promised to refer the plan to the Town and Country Planning for advise vis-?-vis septic tanks and soakpits. Mario responds: Rajan, If you could post Rosy Barretto's email address, I for one, would be glad to chide her for ignoring the Gram Sabha's resolution. I'm sure she would hear from several others as well. Can you explain what holds the Gram Sabhas from soliciting the help of some local lawyers and filing a lawsuit against the Sarpanch and the Panchayat? If it is a question of money, then Wendell's plan may be useful in challenging these officials through the courts instead of his Quixotic suggestion to start yet another political party.
[Goanet] Dr. Jose and Fr. Ivo (was Lourdes miracles)
Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 13:53:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED] The proposed method is what is called scientific method. Mario asks: What I would like to know is, are there any events, either positive or negative, that are known to have occurred for which there is no plausible scientific explanation. For example, how does one get a malignant sarcoma when there has never been a known incidence of cancer in one's family? How does a child turn out to be left handed when there are no left handers on either side of her family? Why does Dr. Jose resort to rude and childish gibberish when he inserts himself into discussions of subjects he knows nothing about? If you think I am kidding just read some of his posts.

We will not allow any changes in official language bill : GKA chief NT NETWORK Posted on 2008-08-27 We will not allow any changes in official language bill : GKA chief PANAJI- Pundalik Naik, President of Goa Konkani Akademi and eminent Konkanni writer, who was convenor of the 'Konkanni Porjecho Awaz' at the time the Konkanni language bill was passed, was quite upset with the statement of the Chief Minister and told The Navhind Times that he was confused as to how the Chief Minister could make such a statement. At that time it was not only the government?s decision but the policy of the Congress party and the party had got it cleared by the government. While replying to the demands on the language issue on Monday during the ongoing assembly session, the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat said that he was ready to discuss this issue and to find satisfactory solution once and for all for the good of Goa and Goans. Mr Manohar Parrikar?s private member resolution to constitute a committee of representatives of MLAs, supporters of Roman script and supporters of Marathi is scheduled to be discussed on August 29 in the House. Naik vehemently said they would not allow any changes in the official language bill and it should be realised that as of now the youth force with love for their mother tongue was much bigger then during the time of the language agitation and also charged that there had been efforts to make changes in the bill earlier. He argued that the 'Goa Konkani Akademy' was there to guide the government on Konkani as well as to put the policies of the government into practice. Around four years back Dr Wilfred De Souza had moved a private members resolution to give patronage to Konkani in the Romi script. This was during my first tenure as the president of the GKA and at that time we took a decision that we would give all help and treat Roman script on par with Devanagri script. All schemes like publishing, programmes, giving awards for everything both scripts would be treated on par, and argued further that they had always treated tiatrs as part of Konkanni literature and they never done any injustice to any Konkanni writer or literature in the past four years and even before that.ENDS other stories in section Govt to fight back SEZ cases in court, says CM Ravi expected to table Goa police bill, 2008 Minimum wages for unskilled workers to be raised: Joaquim Modern modules to be added to existing courses High Court orders state to pay costs to petitioner Govt officials seize PoP idols in Mapusa All's not well in Sirsaim, Mapusa communidades Urgent need to protect environment, says Nelly Lamanis back for the season at Palolem beach Share files, take polls, and make new friends - all under one roof. Nobody is denying the need for financial viability of Mopa. But before doing that some out-of-the-box thinking is called for to counter the other problems listed. [Goanet] Panjim Mess
Albert writes:- Panjim was a planned city. It was planned in such a way that during the monsoons when the rivers used to flood the water that would enter the city would flow through the drains into a small lake in Mala. The present Kadamba bus stand was in fact salt pan and it was connected to the river the other side. After liberation during the MG rule builders started filling these salt pans. They started building huge buildings and the drains were filled up. I do not seem to have seen a lake in Mala now.Parrikar did not build the kadamba bus stand but Rane did. So one cannot blame Parrikar for the mess. Regarding pissing and spitting in public places there is an act to prevent this. It is the duty of the Police who themselves eat pan and spit in public places should see that the mess is not done. During Parrikar's regime toilets were erected along the river front which dissappeared once he was thrown out. _ From salsa lessons to filmy gossip, news to music concerts - watch it all on MSN Video http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-in
[Goanet] Sangh Parivar runs amok in Orissa
The Telegraph August 27 , 2008 Editorial LOVE FOR HATE When the caretaker of an orphanage run by Christian missionaries is burnt alive by a Vishwa Hindu Parishad mob in the Bargarh district of Orissa, the obvious reference point is the Graham Staines murder. Yet even that was the result of the ruthless hate campaign against Christians conducted by the VHP and its sangh brethren in Orissa. Nothing has changed since the United Progressive Alliance came to power; the conflict seems to have intensified with the coalition of the Biju Janata Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party running the state government. The government seems blind to the numerous instances of vandalism on churches, homes and orphanages, as well as of violence against Christians. In October 2006, the India Peoples' Tribunal on Communalism in Orissa had given 13 recommendations to the state and Central governments to check growing communalism. That has been useless. The story is the old one, and is most forceful in Kandhamal district. The sangh parivar claims to be opposing conversion by force or allurement by Christian missionaries. The old plot has been given a new twist by the fact that tribal Kandhs and Dalits are ranged against one another. Many Dalits are Christian, and, according to the controversial Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, they have lost the advantages due to SCs. The Kandhs retain scheduled tribe status whatever religion they choose. So Kui-speaking Dalits, linguistically and culturally similar to the Kandhs, are fighting for ST status. Meanwhile, the sangh is busy 'reconverting', by both force and allurement, tribal people to Hinduism, even though they were nature-worshippers in the first place. That the Dalits are improving economically has added urgency to the VHP's campaign. It was led most successfully by Laxmananda Saraswati, whose call to destruction caused numberless violent incidents, murders and work-stoppages in the district, although they left the government and the police remarkably unperturbed. His murder, presumably by Maoists, was the cause for the bandh during which the VHP went on a destructive spree, and burnt to death an innocent woman in an orphanage. But what is amazing is that the Central and state governments have allowed the violence of a religious hate campaign to become routine in the heart of a secular republic. -- Question everything -- Karl Marx
