[Goanet] M'lore: Conversions Taking Place at Negligible Size - D V Sadanand Gowda

2008-09-20 Thread Ancy D'Souza
Why fundamentalis do not get them involved in service Activities ?
By Ancy Paladka

Readers please note that when the miscreants attacked various churches
mostly belonging to Catholics and there was a peaceful spontaneous
protest. But the police acted as the agents of the Government and
compelled the protesters to turn violent. The Bajrang Dal chief openly
admitted the responsibility of the attacks. Chief Minister, State BJP
president, Home minister everyone came and they condemned the violent
protest. They also condemned the forced conversion. Chief Minister
kept on saying that there can not be enquiry on the attacks. He also
said that he has initiated enquiry on foreign funds. Second time he
said that he is initiating enquiry on Forced conversion. By giving
these statements it appeared as if it is an state sponsored attack.
They also said that the protesters will be punished and will not be
released. They never spoke against the attackers. But the intelligent
Mangalorean Catholics exposed all the evil deeds of the government. So
the central planned to use article 355. Hearing about this with all
the embarrassment the chief minister bent down and said he will
initiate the CoD enquiry. But the people said they don't want that as
it again monitor by the state govt. So again he was made to bent down
and now he says he is ordering enquiry under the chairmanship of
retired jurdge. Also he said that he will arrest Bajarang Dal Convenor
and the culprits who attacked. Also the BJP chief Sadananda Gowda who
was always blaming that there are lots of force conversion today says
the conversions (Remember not Forced Conversions) taking in Negligible
size. Tomorrow I am sure he will be bound to say that no conversions
taking place at all. Because in a present day situation there can not
have any kind of forced conversion. If anyone wants to get converted
by his own will there is nothing wrong as per the constitution. Also
the constitution gives full right to every religion to practice and
profess their religion. Catholics and other christian denominations
are working for the poor, Dalit and Tribal people only with the view
of upliftment. Today Christians who are just 2% in our country manage
more than 30% of old age homes, leprocy homes, Orphanages, street
children, left out childrens homes, unwanted and mentally retarded
childrens homes, psychiatric patiants homes and they try to give them
a dignified life. They give them education so that they will get the
knowledge to choose what is right and what is wrong. So that the
people themselves can fight for their rights. They themselves may
manage their needs. Though the entire Hindu community is a peaceful
and helping community that blends beautifully with all religious
people in their neighborhood these very little negligible number of
fundamentalist group claim to be representing the whole mass. If so
why cant they get involved in to such educational, service and health
activities to their own community. For them funds generation is so
easy because as they say the represent 90% people. They also have lots
of their people abroad who also contribute generously to them. They
how is it possible for Christians who represent only 2% to manage more
than 30% of various service institutions by collecting funds from just
2% of tier people ?
Also readers please note that Catholics and protestants have always
condemned the acts of small sect of people who themselves are separate
entity. They target anybody they get including Catholics Even these
people can not perform any forced conversions. Also they are
negligible in number.
Also Christianity came to India 2000 years ago. All the Europe,
America, Australia continentals are all christian countries. But even
though Christianity came to India much before it spread to these
European, American Countries Christians are still 2% only in India. If
there was actually a forced conversion then the entire nation should
have been a christian country because British, Portuguese have ruled
us for hundreds of years. This is a very good sign that Christians
blend very well with their Hindu Brethren and respect their culture,
language and religion as they respect their own.

[Goanet] What To Do In Falling Markets - Off Topic

Those with 'professional credentials' trading in the stock market do not have
any more insight to the vulgarities of the market than those who have not sat
for the exams. The concept of lowering taxes, printing more money and
borrowing to spend abroad, has a price. Those with money in the markets are now
paying that price. The only govt that has printed more money than the current
USSA adm has been the Weimar Republic.

Mario agrees:

Rishikesh, watch out for any free advice on Goanet.  One expert advisor on
Goanet recently told us that those who took his advice on the internet deserved
their fate.  That was when gold had hit $1,000 an oz. and he gleefully
predicted in a similar Off-topic post that gold would go to $1,650 an oz. but
without any time frame as to when.  As you know the time frame of an investment
is critical as to it's success.  Gold closed today at around $870 and has been
as low as $820 a few weeks ago.  Perhaps it will reach $1,650 sometime during
my lifetime:-))

However, while we are waiting for that to happen, the Dow is up 40 points in
the last month, up 18% the past 5 years and up 44% the past 10 years.

Also, to get another perspective, you may want to read what some REAL experts
are saying rather than the absurd comparisons between the USA and the USSR and
Weimar Republic:

[Goanet] Goans will decide allotment of scarce land: Digamber Kamat

2008-09-20 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
Panaji, Sep 20 (IANS) The battle for precious land between titleholders and
prospective investors across the country has made the Congress government in
Goa wary of allotting land to industrialists or for special economic zones
(SEZs), says Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.
Goans will decide land allotment to outside investors or industrialists
through local bodies (panchayats) as land is scarce and precious. We are with
them in protecting their lands, identity and heritage, Kamat told IANS.
As India's smallest state, with an area of just 3,702 km for a population of
1.4 million, Goa has decided to amend the law to regulate land allotment for
setting up industries or SEZs. It has only two districts - north and south.
We have roped in renowned architect Charles Correa to prepare the draft plan
and an amendment bill to regulate land acquisition. The local communities will
vet the draft plan through local bodies to decide land utilisation, Kamat said
on the sidelines of a three-day summit on realty sector, which began Thursday
in this picturesque western coastal city.
The state government plans to introduce the amendment bill in the next
legislative assembly session. The draft plan will be ready by this month-end.
Renowned for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture,
Goa is visited by thousands of international and domestic tourists each year.
Once a Portuguese colony, Goa also has rich flora and fauna, owing to its
location on the Western Ghats range, which is classified as a biodiversity
hotspot.
Unlike in other states, the government does not own any land for allotment.
The entire land across the state is owned by people, especially farmers,
fishermen and growers. In cities and towns like Panaji, Vasco and Margao, there
has been lot of investment in property by outsiders, Kamat said.
Mass protests by locals forced the state government to cancel allotment of land
for a dozen SEZs. Even a 1.2-million square feet SEZ proposal of pharma major
Cipla in the state has been put on hold due to opposition by the people.
Locals are wary of any demographic change. They prefer the state to be a
global tourist destination than an industrial state due to scarce land, natural
resources and fragile ecology. They also want to protect their identity,
culture and language from being polarised, Kamat noted.
Endorsing Kamat's standpoint, union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy
said Goans had the right to have a say in the socio-economic development of the
state.
Goa is a special state with respect to urban or industrial development due to
its topography, demography and fragile environment. Economic growth or
urbanisation has to be in conformity with its historical, social and cultural
factors, Reddy told about 200 delegates participating in the 'Girem Urban
Planning and Real Estate Leadership' summit.

B'lore: Conversion only Excuse to Attack Christians - Justice M F Saldanha

Report and pics from Charles Gomes
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Sep 19: Leaders of various Christian organizations met the
state home minister Dr V S Acharya and chief minister B S Yeddyurappa
at the Vidhana Soudha here on Thursday September 18, in connection
with the recent unfortunate incidents that have rocked Mangalore and
surrounding areas.

Justice M F Saldanha, former Karnataka High Court judge, urged the
government to act more responsibly and wanted the use of the excuse of
conversion to stop immediately. He asked the home minister to act
impartially to restore confidence in the government, which the
minorities have lost after the recent developments. He drew the
minister's attention to the fact that the incidents that occured in
Mangalore have already damaged the state's image. He also questioned
as to why the policemen are arresting victims instead of the real
culprits, who have openly admitted that they were responsible for such
acts.

Former DG and IGP of Karnataka F T R Colaco asked the government, as
to why they keep on harping about conversions, in spite of the fact
that there has not been even a single proof. He demanded the
immediate arrest of the miscreants, besides urging the government to
release innocent people who have been arrested. Harry D'Souza, general
secretary of Karnataka Christian Social Welfare Association, submitted
a memorandum to the government.

The home minister and the chief Minister said, that a COD probe has
been ordered. They assured, that all the culprits responsible for the
illegal acts will be arrested and that the government would do
everything possible to normalise the law and order situationin the
affected areas.

DG IGP Sri Kumar, Bangalore police commissioner Shankar Bidari and
home secretary Tripati were present. B G Koshi, senior vice-president
of Karnataka Christian Welfare Association, Charles Gomes , Chairman
of the Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA), Karnataka
and Albina Vaz, vice-chairman of FKCA, Gabriel Vaz, political editor
of Economic Times, bishop of CSI church, priests and nuns were also
present.

Earlier, a delegation of Christians met the National Human Rights
commission and National Minority commission.

Mario observes:

So much ignorance, so little time.

Jose wrote:

Is Kunbi a caste?

Mario responds:

Yes, it is. See, http://www.webindia123.com/goa/people/caste.htm

Excerpt:

Caste Structure
In Goa, the Bamonn or the Brahmins belonged to the originally priestly class
taking upon other occupations like agriculture, trade and commerce (merchants),
gold smithy etc. The Chaddho or the Kshatriyas were the noblemen, warriors and
related soldiery taking up commercial avocations also. The Vaishya-Vanis were
engaged in trade and among them were the 'shetts' or goldsmiths pursuing the
craft of gold and gold ornaments. The Sudir or the Sudras were the workers and
agricultural labourers engaged in the servicing professions. The Gavddi or
Kunnbi were the landless labourers, earlier dislodged by the above high castes
and living in their own wards in the village. There were the Gauddo or Gaudde,
probably the Vaishya counterparts in Goa of the neighbouring Karnataka's Gowda,
as there is 'Gaud' found in the Canacona taluka of Goa on Karnataka's border.

Jose wrote:

Isn't Harijan = out caste?

No, they are not out caste, but outcasts.  See,
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/outcasts

Regarding Harijans as a caste, see,
http://www.mb-soft.com/believe/txo/untoucha.htm

Excerpt:

Untouchables, now called Harijans, have traditionally occupied the lowest place
in the caste system of Hindu India; they were called untouchable because they
were considered to be outside the confines of caste. Their impurity derived
from their traditional occupations, such as the taking of life and the
treatment of bodily effluvia.

Jose wrote:

Yes, there are no castes in Christianity.  However, you called your self a

Mangalore: Mahendra Kumar Arrested - Remanded to Judicial Custody

Pics by Dayanand Kukkaje
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 20: State convener of Bajrang Dal Mahendra Kumar was
arrested from near Navbharat Circle in the city at around 12 pm late
night on Friday September 19 by the Bunder policemen.

Mahendra Kumar had through a statement issued on the day of the attack
on churches, confessed that Bajrang Dal was behind the attacks, and
also that they were aimed at centres involved with religious
conversions. However, the home minister had been evading demands for
his arrest, saying that there was no tangible proof of his
involvement.

However, after the union government exerted pressure on the state
government to put its act together, the administration jumped into the
action and initiated search operations to nab him since Friday
morning, in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur districts.

Kumar was travelling by a car, when his vehicle was intercepted and he
was taken into custody. Other passengers in the car were let off and
their details are not yet known. He was presented in the residence of
a judge here at around 2 am on Saturday September 20, and as per
information, he has been remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
Further details are awaited.

In the meantime, the district administration has extened prohibitory
orders in Mangalore, Bantwal and Beltangady taluks till Monday
September 22.

CPI Protest Rally Condemns Attack on Churches, Prayer Halls in Kundapur
Report and pic from Vinay Pais
Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Sep 20: Local unit of the Communist Party of India-Marxist
(CPM) held a public meeting here recently, to condemn the attacks on
churches and prayer halls by Bajrangdal.

The meeting, held in Gandhi Maidan here, was preceded by a huge rally
taken through the streets of the town, which was led by party leader
Mahabal Voderhobli.

Addressing the gathering, CPM district executive committee member
Chandrasheker said that the state convener of Bajrangdal, Mahendra
Kumar, has already admitted the involvement of his organization in
these attacks, but the state government failed to take any action
against him and the Dal. The indifference shown towards the issue by
the chief minister B S Yeddyurappa indicates, that himself as well as
his government are justifying the attacks, launched at the behest of
the Sangh Parivar outfits, he criticized.

The party's district committee secretary K Shankar, speaking on the
occasion, urged the authorities to entrust the investigation into
these attacks and the subsequent police atrocities, to Central Bureau
of Investigation, as any investigation conducted by the state Corps of
Detectives would just be an eye-wash, as in the past.

H Narasimha proposed vote of thanks.

[Goanet] Dear Goa Herald ...will you please give this reporter a raise in salary?

2008-09-20 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Dr. Jose Colaco,

Calling a Cardiologist a Cardiac surgeon is a minor offence in Goan
journalism when compared to calling a Paediatrician and Orthopaedic Surgeon
. or calling a Botany graduate as a horticulturist . To most
correspondents, reporters and Sub-Editors it is Babi, Shabi poca difference.
Some of them would be hard put to tell the difference between 'series' and
'serious'in the era of spell-check: all options on the menu look equally
appealing and the only problem is which one to choose. So it is Ena , meena ,
mynah, more ..

There is another problem. Lecturers in Higher Secondary Schools like to prefix
their names with a Prof.. My friend, Prof. Sebastiao Mariano Borges,
Editor, columnist and calumnist par excellance at least has a M.Sc. in Geology
and taught the subject in Chowgule College as a lecturer. For some time, the
Agriculture graduate officers in Goa were struck with the madness of prefixing
Dr. to their names and even insisted that I do. thank God , we have been able
to overcome that fetish. Those who have Ph.Ds are still infected with that
virus in Goa.
While Adv. Aires Rodrigues is making a big issue of a non-Graduate being a
Minister for Education, people with graduation in Arts, Fine Arts or Commerce
strut about Environmentalists, Horticulturists Ecologists, Scientists
and the like.

Some editors even come to the defence of such honorofic titles assumed by
their columnists ...even where they are Editors where the name is also used
with the horrorfic titles.

The Govt. of Goa even issues Gazette notifications adding the title of an AWARD
[not degree] like Padma Bushan or Padma Shree to the name of a person appointed
by it to a Committee or Commission ...the latter being a more appropriate term.
;-)

Have heart, the person whom the reporter mistakenly called as a cardiac surgeon
is a cardiologist! Dr. Francisco Colaco is not a man to pretend being what he
is not. I can vouch for that. There are few men like us in Goa.

Mog asundi.

It is important to remember that partisan frenzy and propaganda, whether it is

Comment:
I have asked Santosh in my previous mail to point out what information
constituted propaganda and what was not. He is yet to respond. Yet very
unscientifically he goes on to brand the information as propaganda and partisan
without adducing any proof, and in one sentence tries to rubbish all the news
items about the death and destruction caused by the sangh parivar. So much for
scientific temper!!!
Santosh wrote:
Being measured and thoughtful about what one says in public in explosive
situations is a mark of prudence and civility, not complacency.
Comment:
There are different stages when reacting to any situation. First is to condemn
any wrongdoing. Then offer relief to the victims. And then go into the causes
of the incident to avoid it recurring in the future. But trying to sound
measured and thoughtful while there is mayhem all around is akin to Nero
fiddling while Rome was burning.
Santosh wrote:
Most Indians do not subscribe to the agenda of terrorist groups, extremist

Comment:
Yes I agree that most Indians are peaceful and do not subscribe to the hate
agenda of the sangh parivar. And that is what gives me hope in this country.
All the same, remaining silent does not help. It is very important to speak out
loud and clear. It is only when sane voices speak that insane voices drown.

First of all calling the pogrom a 'communal riot' shows a macabre sense of

witnessed in Orissa and Mangalore is a one-sided pogrom by the Bajrang Dal. You

mean that the people who have them are any less concerned about communal
violence. Indeed, I submit that it is these level-headed folks who would
ultimately be responsible for peace non-violence to prevail.
Comment:
The article is a big joke. Let me quote from the article-
1.'All this unnecessary furore over burning churches, buildings and bridges!'
Comment:The author has trivialised the death, destruction, rapes, burning of
innocent people as 'unnecessary furore' Maybe the author should answer what
would be a 'necessary furore'
2.'It really is a battle of semantics because when you get down to it, neither
'Hinduism nor Christianity are religions — both are lifestyles.'
Comment:Belief systems being labelled as 'lifestyles'!!!. As in fashion.Like
footwear, clothing, dining, Wow!!!
3.'To burn a church is a tragic act, however, it does not injure Christ.'
Comment: Sure. But does this give an open licence to burn, vandalise and
destroy?
4.'There are thousands of Indians who know Christ but do no want to be known as
Christians because of the ‘excess baggage’ that accompanies the term, the pain
of the past and the indignities that were imposed on human beings in India by
people who called themselves Christian.
Comment: What are these 'excess baggages'? What were the 'indignities' that
were imposed on human beings in India by Christians? The author has failed to
elaborate but left it to wild imagination.
5.'The genuine follower of Christ in today’s turbulent times in India will not
meet the hostility through aggression or through a martyr complex, but will try
to undo the damage of the past by living and manifesting the message of the
gospel, which when translated into everyday life, is the message of love.
Comment:The author has failed to specify what 'is the damage of the past' that
a genuine christian has to undo. This is typical of ivory tower advisors. Let
your homes burn, let your children be killed but let us discus lofty ideas.
Gives us an intellectual halo and hepls us avoid taking decisions and action.

The very knowledgeable MarioG quoted the following excerpt to prove
that Kunbis were a caste (MY CAPS)

[ Yes, it is. See, http://www.webindia123.com/goa/people/caste.htm
Caste Structure : In Goa, the Bamonn or the BRAHMINS belonged to the
originally priestly class taking upon other occupations like
agriculture, trade and commerce (merchants), gold smithy etc. The
Chaddho or the KSHATRIYAS were the noblemen, warriors and related
soldiery taking up commercial avocations also. The VAISHYAS-Vanis were
engaged in trade and among them were the 'shetts' or goldsmiths
pursuing the craft of gold and gold ornaments. The Sudir or the SUDRAS
were the workers and agricultural labourers engaged in the servicing
professions. The Gavddi or Kunnbi were the landless labourers, earlier
dislodged by the above high castes and living in their own wards in
the village.]

jc's response:

Thank you very much Xri MarioG.

So, you are suggesting, Are you not? that there are 5 Castes in the
Hindu Caste System? Now you 'tolds' me!

And ALL this time, simple me was believing that Manu (He was a
Portuguese chap ...right?) (:-), Yes, 'Manuel' had decreed only 4
castes!. Thank You for correcting me and enlightening me to the fact
that there were actually 5 castes.

Those Portuguese were Not So Nice folks, were they?

They forced us to write our Konkani in that Unnatural and Foreign
Script (Ask 'ProSorbab')

They forced the Saraswats who are the original (Lord Parshuram)
inhabitants of Goa to join them in Portuguese controlled Mangalore.
They are now being displaced by the Lord Jagjivan Ram followers who
have appeared en masse in Goa.

The Portuguese did NOT introduce computers into Goa

The Portuguese forced Goans to drink Port Wine and Eat spicy hot food
now correctly called Wind-a-Loo (Hence the need for Port-a-Loo)

and the Portuguese chap Manu invented the Caste System and imposed it
on Goans who were hitherto quite peaceful and sans pain except for the
Odds On chance of having to be 'circumscribed'.

Thank you once again, MarioG. You are just as brilliant as your guru

Herald, 19 Sep 2008

Knocking on Goa's Doors
by Vidyadhar Gadgil

Hard on the heels of the communal violence in Orissa, we have an
outbreak of communal violence in Karnataka. In both cases, it is the
Christian community that has been attacked and the purported reason
has been protests against conversions. The BJP is in power in both
Karnataka (on its own) and Orissa (as a coalition partner).
After the attacks in Karnataka, the BJP Chief Minister of Karnataka B
S Yediyurappa, a man with very strong RSS links, has assured strict
action against the miscreants. But even this statement, the very
minimum that could be expected, has not come without the customary
rhetoric about conversions, notwithstanding the fact that there has
not been a single complaint about illegal conversions in Karnataka. In
effect, the message sought to be sent out is that the Christian
community deserved what happened. While the promised action against
those guilty of the attacks on churches and Christians is awaited,
there has been action of another kind – against those, both Christians
and others, protesting the communal violence in Karnataka. Obviously,
Yediyurappa means to keep his oft-repeated promise to convert
Karnataka into another Gujarat.
The rising communal temperature in the country should come as no
surprise. With the 2008 general elections approaching, calculations
within the BJP suggest that it would not be able to get more than 140
seats, while it would need at least about 180 to be sure of forming a
coalition government at the centre. Given this scenario, those within
the BJP who have been pushing for a hard-line communal mobilisation
agenda (the 'Modi line') have prevailed.
The Amarnath issue came as a great opportunity for the BJP. The party
milked the issue for every last drop of political mileage, not only in
Jammu but all over India; little did it care that the consequent
blockade of the Kashmir valley set back the normalisation process in
Kashmir by many years, and further deepened the alienation felt by the
average Kashmiri from the Indian nation.
But one Amarnath does not an election make: the tempo has to be built
up and sustained. The obvious targets for this are the states where
communal propaganda has been going on for years, and where there are
friendly governments in power. It is in this context that the communal
violence in Orissa (and parts of MP) and Karnataka against the
Christian community has to be seen. We can expect more trouble spots
to emerge in the months ahead.
Such strategies of communal polarisation can sometimes cause some
collateral damage to the BJP's own short-term interests, and one of
the sites of such collateral damage is in Goa. The citizens of Goa,
irrespective of faith and community, have been outraged by the
violence against the Christian community, and have united to condemn
the violence. The rally in Panjim on 16 September saw thousands of
citizens of all communities come together to oppose communalism.
For a few years now, ever since it realised that it is well-nigh
impossible to win an election in Goa without at least a portion of the
Catholic vote, the state BJP has put its efforts to woo the Catholic
vote into overdrive. But now the BJP finds its strategy in shambles,
with the Catholic community completely alienated and other communities
too increasingly sceptical of the BJP's bonafides. It is in this
context that one has to understand the crocodile tears being shed by
Manohar Parrikar over the communal violence in Karnataka.
The fact of the matter is that the Goa BJP has no choice but to be
seen condemning this violence (though even this condemnation has been
qualified with dubious figures indicating that in Goa it is Hindu
shrines that are more under attack than churches or mosques). Coastal
Karnataka is just too close by, and culturally similar, to be
studiously ignored the way Parrikar ignored communal violence in other
parts of the country. About Orissa he continues to maintain a glacial
silence. He has consistently refused to utter even a word of
condemnation or protest over Gujarat; whenever the topic has come up
in interviews, he has only said that Gujarat is not relevant, and we
should talk about Goa. Let us take his advice and do just that.
The March 2006 communal violence in Sanvordem-Curchorem awakened Goans
to the harsh reality of communalism in their midst. People realised
that the strong syncretic traditions of Goa were insufficient bulwark
against the systematic communal propaganda being carried out by
various Hindutvavadi organisations like the Bajrang Dal, the VHP, the
RSS, the Sanatan Sanstha and the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. These
bodies have been working to communalise Goan society for many years ;
and it is the BJP which has benefited politically while professing to
have nothing to do with it (convincing nobody except those who, for
whatever reason, deliberately refuse to see).
In the post-Sanvordem era, we have been treated by the HJS to an
exhibition

You are right that my money is at risk - in the short run.

However, the only ones who are laughing are anti-Americans who overlook
the fact that the US has the inherent ability to address its problems and
recover from them - always has, always will.

Sooner or later the profligate spending and currency devaluation will end,

[Goanet] A Stitch In Time

2008-09-20 Thread Roland Francis
There are measures that can be taken to prevent a communal flare-up in
Goa and rather than denying such a thing will happen, it is better to
put them in place as soon as possible.

Taken from Bombay's experiences.

1. Form community committees with a prominent local swami, priest,
mullah and gurudwara leader - all men of reason with moderate views.
Beware of infiltrators and keep hotheads out.

2. Get out the webcams, cameras, mini tape-recorders and assign them
to committee members of various faiths. The identities of these people
should be kept secret. This is for immediate publication on the
internet and for later proof. This can be sent to Goans outside of Goa
who can provide this proof to their local MPs in India, Canada, UK,
Australia. An immediate national and international hue and cry will
prevent many possible deaths.

3. Organize working relationships with community minded local police
station point-men, providing them with intelligence of anything
untoward brewing in the community. If the local police person is
apathetic, identify a regional upright senior police officer.

4. Keep a special look-out for anyone in the municipality using voting
lists to identify flat owners by religion. These lists are used for
targeting members of a particular faith with violence.

5. Have periodic inter-faith religious prayer meetings where all
attend to show solidarity and friendship with each other.

6. Strange but true - keep strong bonds with local communist party
cells. Being men who favor no religion and being militant, active and
well-organized, they are a great help in troubled times.

7. Get as many women involved as possible. They know what is happening
in their houses and they know suffering and pain like men never will.

There are other ways and means known to local men of good intention
and they know best what can be implemented.

the news items about the death and destruction caused by the
sangh parivar. So much for scientific temper!!!

It is unclear why this guy is continuing his fight with me, now resorting to
innuendo, and insinuating that I am somehow unconcerned about the communal
violence, and am being unsympathetic to the victims. In his latest post he is
even gratuitously accusing me of engaging in humor, just because I used the
term communal riots instead a word he likes - pogrom. Indeed, the use of the
latter word nicely illustrates the type of partisan propaganda that I am
referring to. I have not seen this word being used by any objective news report
in the mainstream press. But it is a staple of propaganda pieces such as the
following in a Khalistan publication.

http://www.panthic.org/news/129/ARTICLE/4361/2008-09-12.html

My use of the term communal riots is dictated by objective accounts in the
mainstream press. For instance, the following report in CNN refers to
Hindu-Christian riots:

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/09/16/india.riots/?iref=mpstoryview

Regarding partisan propaganda, articles such as the above are found all over
the internet. I have witnessed press reports and other material being used in
this forum for this purpose by several individuals, including Marshall Mendoza
and someone called Laluram Salvi. For example, just yesterday Marshall Mendoza
posted the following report on Goanet, implying that this incident is connected
with the attacks by Hindu extremists on Christians elsewhere:

http://www.goanet.org/post.php?name=Newslist=goanetinfo=2008-September/datepost_id=080796

If you read it you find that the two arsonists were unidentified. How does one
know that they were Hindu extremists? Why not communist extremists,
troublemakers or copycats?

Other propaganda articles posted by Marshall are:

1.
http://www.goanet.org/post.php?name=Newslist=goanetinfo=2008-September/datepost_id=080178

This article badmouths the Hindu swami whose killing triggered the Orissa riots.

2.
http://www.goanet.org/post.php?name=Newslist=goanetinfo=2008-September/datepost_id=080061

The above article gratuitously tells us about the activities of the Communist
Party of India (Marxist) in relation to the communal violence.

Similarly, Laluram Salvi has sent several posts in a counter-propaganda
offensive. For me, it is hard to escape the conclusion that these guys are
activists or political operatives of some kind.

Please name the 'militant' activists and 'political operatives' and let us
know what form of violence have they propagated on Goanet.

I have named above two activists/political operatives who are fighting on
Goanet. As far as violence propagated on Goanet by them is concerned, Marshall
Mendoza is simply trying to put words in my mouth to show me in the worst
possible light he can.

It's nice to hear from you. I am a bit embarrassed, but I am not a

I shall however get in touch with other family members/ friends and

When Modi campaigned in Karnataka, he said in no uncertain terms, that
Karnataka would / should become another GUJARAT !

This is proving all true as is evident on the attack of Christian Pastors, and
well, there is also a flip side

Several of the newspapers in Gujarat highlighted how Gujarati boys (read
Hindus) were hounded out of their hostels and colleagues by the Kannadigas.
So Karnataka is learning real fast when they start hounding out people who are
not like them.

How about the poor farmers who were murdered after the new Government took over
? Yes, already becoming JUST LIKE GUJARAT !

Leopards they say, can never change their spots Let's hope civil society in
Karnataka wakes up atleast now.

I have just read and signed the online petition: Stop hate crimes in

Dear Roland,

You are absolutely correct. My good friend, Dr Francisco Colaco is a
well known cardiologist who is smart enough to make his diagnosis and
provide treatment WITHOUT resorting to surgery.

Fortunately, I am NOT a journalist by profession. I could not afford
to make a TYPO in my profession. That is why, I check and double check
before I hand over the prescription.

As you surely agree: Those who portray themselves as Journalists too
have that responsibility to check and recheck before they publish. Do
you not agree?

As you may surely have noted: Some of our alleged Journalists do not
appear to believe in checking and double-checking. They just go full
lick with their Verbal Diarrhoea.

I do not mean .the TYPOS. I mean the alleged and even manufactured facts.

Would you trust a doctor who negligently makes mistakes in writing
prescriptions?

Would you trust a journalist who negligently fails to verify all the
sides of a story?

I am sure that your answers to both questions is NO!

good wishes

[Goanet] Xavier Fernandes - North Goa's famous compere to host NITE O'ROSES

2008-09-20 Thread gaspersWorld

:::Xavier Fernandes to host Nite O'Roses on 2nd October at Crowne Plaza:::

Good evening ladies and gentleman..!

The words are quite synonymous at the start of every party and program. And
the person who draws full attention of everyone is the host and centre of
attraction -- the MC.

Traditionally, a MC uses rhyming verses, whether pre-written or freestyled,
to introduce everyone he works with, and hype up the crowd.
Kuwait Indians will have an opportunity to see and hear the unique glib of
international fame Master of Ceremonies and Event Manager Xavier Fernandes
at the NITE O'ROSES being organized by Navelim Youth Centre on Thursday 2nd
Oct 2008 at Crowne Plaza starting 8pm onwards.

Hailing from Candolim, Bardez - Goa, Xavier has hosted numerous product
launches, conferences weddings, parties, etc, since 1983.

The Master Compere is best seen shining at Christmas and New Year Eve shows
in Goa, Valentine Nite shows, other Dine Dances, Beat shows, Fêtes, Theme
Nites for Hotels Clubs, and even local festivals like Sao Joao, Sangodd,
etc .

The famous Master of Ceremonies is also actively involved in educational
institutions, social, cultural and pastoral activities.

  :::Jive Competition at Nite O'Roses:::

“If you don't know to dance, blame the floor.”

That’s a popular phrase which goes well in Konkani. Well, among the current
genre you don’t need to know 'dancing'. Just get on to the floor, and as
they say -- Hip-Hop.

Navelim Youth Centre – Kuwait (NYC-Kuwait) is geared up to make sure that
the culture of 'delicate' steps remain popular among the youth and old.

NYC's last dance nite in Kuwait featured a Cha Cha dance contest. This year
s Nite O' Roses will see NYC organize yet another competition - a Jive
Competition.

:::Excellent Prizes for the Winners:::

:::BlackSlades for Nite O'Roses:::

Kuwait: What do you get if you get India's best drummer, the most talented
guitarist, a bass guitarist like none in the country, an equally impressive
guy on the keyboards and a vocalist who is as young at heart as he is
talented at the task . ??? Makes for a lethal combination, doesn't it?

That's how you would describe the BlackSlades once you've seen them perform.
By any standards one of the best Goan bands around. This group of guys are
based in Delhi but are very much Goans at heart.

BlackSlades will rock Kuwait at the Nite O'Roses on Thursday 2nd October
2008.

Kuwait's upcoming band 2#Sharp is the other musical group geared up to
feature at the Nite.

Michael Almeida ( Keyboards ) - Nephew of Kuwait's famous musician Shahu.

Ronald ( Vocalist ) is like a firecracker exploding endlessly. He comes from
the coastal village of Benaulim and is the most charismatic of the lot.
Ronald is also the youngest in the group and started singing professionally
at the age of 19. One look at Ronald and you may take him for a walking,
talking billboard for a style magazine, with accessories and a haircut as
vibrant as his personality.

Menino ( Guitarist/Vocals ) is a very humble person and easy to get along.
Six strings on a piece of wood with Menino's fingers is a sure way to make
magic that maybe cannot be seen but definitely can be heard. Menino is
originally from Colva and is a very good cook as well.

Succoro ( Drummer ) - This guy's looks are deceiving - he may look like a
scientist about to discover something big, but give him a drum set and you
will feel the bass kick in a pulsating rhythm that is sure to leave you
asking for more. Succoro is the quietest member of the band but when he
speaks everybody better listen. He is originally from Colva.

Anthony ( Bass Guitarist ) comes from the beautiful village of Velsao. Anton
as he is called by those close to him, is a very down-to-earth person, the
kind who would only take as much as needed. He is an amazing player of the
Bass guitar. Anthony is also into martial arts (taekwondo). His aim is to
release an album in Konkani.

To reserve entry-passes please contact NYC members

President Agnello A.S. Fernandes.:::

GOAN MUSIC-7

“Tiatr” produced copious volumes of music-song. Named after the Portuguese
‘Teatro,’
the Konknni stage was Goa’s largest of performing arts, mainly among Catholics.
It sure
featured names like Kamat de Assolna but bulk was Goan Catholic, some with
curious
stage names like Titta Pretto and Jhepsis Hitler!

“Pai Tiatrist” Joao Agostinho (JA) Fernandes, actually “Irmao” of pioneer
Lucasino

from his
first, and history’s second, Tiatr. JA set Tiatr in the seven-Acts format, and
between the
Acts, songs that could be solos, duets, trios or quartets. With his own wife,
he introduced
women to the stage. His themes were clearly aimed at social reformation.

Thence, the world of Tiatr produced many giants. They would take a tome to even
be
briefly discussed. I’ll restrict to a few whose song-music so impacted my young
mind that
I remember them to this day. I was not old enough to see some of them live, but
heard
their renditions from vinyl records or from ‘Akashvani’ (in those times, “Aqui

fala Emissora de Goa.”)

Personally, my greatest Tiatrist was singer-actor Kid Boxer. Not just for his
song, but for
his courage of conviction. Allow me to leave the best for the last, in a couple
of Sundays,
when I’ll elaborate.

One colossus of the Tiatr world was Minguel Rod. He strode the Konknni stage at
a
precocious age, entering when he himself was only 13. His songs attacked social
ills,
which is natural as he hailed from a poor tribal background of Cortalim. His
verse-lyrics
were absolutely original – even if his tunes at times were borrowed. His
imagery and
satirical bite was not. A song went like, “(The landlord’s) house was massive/
built of
rock-solid stone/ but a wall collapsed/ when a pig’s tail accidentally brushed
against it.”
Credited with revival of the Tiatr during its gloomiest days, Minguel produced
colourful
titles like ‘Lembddo Santan’ and ‘Pobre Fidalgo.’

Year 1955 was tumultuous for the Portuguese in Goa. August 15, India’s
Independence
Day, saw several “Jai Hinds” shot dead or injured at border points of
Patradevi, Molem
and Polem. On October 5, Portugal’s Republic Day, hundreds of natives converged
at
Cortalim. Everyone from Governor to gun-totting soldier quaked, until it was
discovered it
was not an internal ‘Satyagraha.’ Minguel Rod had died. Like several Tiatr
greats, at a
young age: 32. “Aqui Portugal …” announced the demise in all its six language
news
bulletins. And annual radio tributes until liberation.

Anthony Mendes is my best Konknni comedian-singer, not because his ancestral
house
was a whistling distance from mine. Such was his singing, dancing and acting
talent that
he was about to be inducted in Hindi films, when he too departed – also at a
relatively
young age. Upon his death, Alfred Rose composed and sang a tribute to him.
Several
times during its rendition, Alfred broke down, and with him, most in the
audience.

Anthony need not have uttered funny Konknni lines to have the crowd in splits.
He
achieved that by merely twitching his bushy whiskers or squinting his
saucer-sized eyes.
Or a faked movement of his agile body – or even with an equally spurious
Padri-style
short quote in Latin! He scripted Tiatrs but only one, “Joao Paddekar,” was
staged in
Goa. Typical of his song lyrics:

“Ho tuzo guneaum, muzo guneaum, kestaum pettota / Beijeam svater, vontt
poleancher,
thapttam suzota” (on domestic tiffs between spouses, where, instead of kisses,
slaps
resound off cheeks.)

After him, Jacinto Vaz and M. Boyer held the flag of stage comedy high.

In this galaxy, the greatest in his day was Alexinho de Candolim. He sang and
also
penned some pretty powerful Tiatrs, including his famous “Sonvsarant Konn
Konnacho,”
and his trademark last, “To Bhavtto Dhormancho.” Alexinho died at age 49, in
1964.

Young Menezes was the first rapid-fire (“jet-speed”) singer. He liberally used
Konknni
adages in his songs, including one titled ‘Hotel de Jakin!’ Like his senior
fellow villager
Alexinho, Young’s songs rhymed perfectly.

Trio singers (three actors interspersing in a song) were popular on the Konknni
stage.
The most legendary was Kid-Young-Rod (Kid Boxer, Young Menezes and Minguel Rod.)
Among the famous Trios was Rom-Rem-Rod, who sang on the abominable murder of a
Taleigao housewife, her daughter and a yet unborn child. That crime, a few
years from
liberation, shocked Goa, earned Malayalees local hatred and, in a long time,
the Aguada
gallows a trophy.

The generally accepted “Trio Kings” were Conception-Nelson-Anthony. Their
political
satire was so devastating that they invited post-1961 official wrath on the
Tiatr fraternity
– special guys, let’s leave them for the last piece. (To conclude.) (ENDS.)

[Goanet] Goanet] Can someone tell me what about this surname?

2008-09-20 Thread U P Kamath
Sorry Colaco,

Could not reply your mail. Been busy with my hereditary
vocation of planning and cheating a bunch of sub sub sub something tribal.
Made a small packet.

You have not yet explained what those more than 2000 feet
long jet straight line bunds of paddy fields were doing in a tribal society.

You can start from paddy fields of Carambolim or from the
surface of the moon. You got to explain the irrational extremely expensive
and foolish straight lines in an agrarian setting. They would have been
foolish even a hundred years ago, not at the dawn of history.

I hope you will have some explanation by the time I am
back.
I have another bunch of sub sub sub sub something tribal to
plan and cheat. Did you observe four sub prefixes? That simply means only
sixty percent of their thinking is rational - rest of the brain consists of
irrational emotions.

This time it is going to be a killing. Wish me luck
Colaco. On second thoughts, who needs luck with such odds.

Who says tribal innocence is gone? Being a saraswat with
no prefixes of sub, I count my chances till anyone with a single sub prefix
exists.
The fight will not be one sided only when all persons
around me drop their sub prefixes and stand as tall as I am.

- regards upkamath.

OK then So MarioG is 'confirming' that Kunbi is a caste

This means that Kunbis are either Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Sudra

or that there are 5 castes as per the new discovery of MarioG

Thank you MarioG

You are as right as the other stubborn headed G

jc

2008/9/20 Mario Goveia [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Besides, in addition
to Kunbi, you also referred to yourself as a Harijan

Jose asked: Is Kunbi a caste?

Mario responds: Yes, it is.

Sorry, I have no fight to pick with you. But as one who has been posting on
various matters with a somewhat sense of balance and objectivity, your response
to the carnage in Orissa was baffling and a big letdown. If you read your own
posts again with a clear mind, you may perhaps realise this.

If Santosh feels that articles in the meanstream press like Times of India,
NDTV, PTI and eyewitness accounts are propaganda, he is free to believe the
same.He can continue to live in denial.Others on Goanet know the difference. And
to club press reports from the mainstream media with stuff from RSS

As far as violence propagated on Goanet by them is concerned, Marshall

I quote from Santosh' previous post 'The militant activists and political
operatives we see on Goanet will keep on fighting and blaming each other'
Please refer to the meaning of 'militant'. No one is putting words in your
mouth. It is flowing from there.

[Goanet] Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award (2008) conferred on Maendra Alvares

2008-09-20 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com

VINCENT XAVIER VERODIANO AWARD

The Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award was founded and instituted by DOM MARTIN in
memory of his late father, VINCENT XAVIER VERODIANO MARTIN.

The objective of the award is to promote the wellbeing of mankind through
individual advancement in the field of art, music, literature, science,
medicine, humanities or the environment.

The winner is announced on the 20th day of September, and the award is
conferred on the 5th day of November.

The award is bestowed by the Vincent Xavier Verodiano Foundation.

VERODIANO LAUREATES

Maendra Alvares

Conferred on Maendra Alvares in recognition of his enterprisingly unique and
innovative commitment to recreate, project and conserve Goa’s eroding heritage
in a life-size time capsule.
After obtaining a degree in Fine Art, Maendra, in 1995, embarked on the
ambitious ideal to recreate for the benefit of posterity, a 3-dimensional
sanctuary of Goa’s iconic past.  The result has been ‘Ancestral Goa’, an open
air museum in Loutolim, singularly envisioned and funded by Maendra on 9 acres
of ancestral land, portraying various aspects of Goan life, artifacts, customs
and traditions.
Ancestral Goa was originally known as ‘Big Foot’, in homage of a large
footprint discovered on a rock and reputed to be propitious.   A monumental
landmark at the site is Maendra’s sculpture of the singing Sant Mirabai.
Carved out of laterite, it is the longest laterite sculpture in India,
measuring 14 meters in length and 5 meters in width.  The project also depicts
and documents in painstaking detail, the architectural evolution of Goan homes,
the indigenous materials used, and the harmonious cohabitation of man and
nature.

Comment:
Conservation is collective consciousness and it must be inherent in our psyche
before we can impose upon those in power to enforce it.  We live in an era
where our existential needs are at constant conflict with nature’s prerogative
to survive in its primordial majesty.  A realization of the natural environment
we live in stimulates a sense of reverence, and through it, a genuine
commitment to conserve it.   Lack of realization perpetuates indifference, and
consequently the blueprints for plunder and irreversible devastation.

In the quest for conservation there needs to be, foremostly, a habitat of
coexistence between demographic growth and the natural environment.  Both can
mutually prevail if we effectively divest our genetic makeup of its inclination
toward stoic and mindless greed.  Nonetheless, organizations such as Goa Bachao
Abhiyan and the Goa Foundation serve as beacons in the conservation of the
natural environment, orienting society’s indifference towards enlightenment,
and in the process, become worthy of posterity’s gratitude

Nostalgia Pic #8:

1961: A portrait of Goan Air Vice Marshal Erlic Pinto, the Indian Air Force's
Operations Commander-in-Chief (Western Air Command), who was in overall
command of the IAF's Goa Operations during the December 1961 Liberation of
Goa. Powerful air-cover sweeping from Diu to Pune provided a secure canopy
for the invading Indian troops. Sadly, this great son of Goa perished exactly
45 years ago this year, in an helicopter crash on November 22nd 1963.
