Islamic Mea Culpa. This headline is mine, lest someone goes ballistic.:=))

RAMALLAH, West Bank – Muslims from the Middle East to Britain and Austria
condemned Sunday the Mumbai shooting rampage by suspected Islamic militants as
senseless terrorism, but also found themselves on the defensive once again
about bloodshed linked to their religion.
Intellectuals and community leaders called for greater efforts to combat

INDIAN EXPRESS: Sideshow: Navy, Army publicity hunt
http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sideshow-navy-army-publicity-hunt/392034/

SOME HIGHLIGHTS (Express' view): A day after he lashed out at the
media at the annual Navy briefing, calling it a 'disabling factor' and
accusing a leading television channel of causing casualties during the
Kargil war, Admiral Sureesh Mehta once again showed his disdain for
the media at the Navy Day ceremony.

The Admiral when approached by mediapersons after the ceremony said I
don't talk to fools and left the venue. The latest comments come after
the Admiral came under criticism from various quarters within the
Defence Ministry for his remarks at the press conference where he even
told reporters that he would have chopped their heads off for an
alleged breach of privilege. Senior Defence Ministry officials
described the Admiral's comments as 'unfortunate' and 'uncalled for'.
Such ranting is uncalled for. He should have exercised restraint.
There are other ways of tackling the situation, a senior official
said.

Meanwhile, NDTV has demanded a public apology from the Navy chief for
his charge that the death of three jawans during the Kargil conflict
was caused due to coverage by the channel. The Navy is believed to
have replied that the comments were made on the basis of a story on a
little known TV channel and an internet blog.

CHECK BARKHA DUTT'S RESPONSE to criticism on Facebook and Orkut:

Finally, I would like to point out that the Navy Chief made a
factually incorrect and wholly untrue comment on NDTV's coverage
during the Kargil conflict of 1999, claiming that NDTV asked for a gun
to be triggered for the benefit of the camera. I want to state for the
record: no such incident ever took place and we have an official
aknowledgment of that, including from then Army Chief, V.P Malik. I
would urge Admiral Mehta to read General V.P Malik's book on Kargil
for further clarity. General Malik was the Army Chief during the
operations and puts to rest any such controversy in his book. In a
formal letter, NDTV has also asked for an immediate retraction from
the Navy and officially complained that the comments amount to
defamation. Several writers have already pointed out how the Navy
Chief has got his facts wrong. (DNA, Indian Express, Vir Sanghvi in
The Hindustan Times, Sankarshan Thakur in The Telegraph). This,
incidentally, was the same press conference where the Admiral
threatened literally to chop the heads off of two other reporters
who aired his interview ahead of schedule.

[Goanet] Why should this not be the answer!!

2008-12-05 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
This message is in reply to Message: 14, dated: Fri, 5 Dec 2008 from:
Marshall Mendonza, on the subject: Why should this not be the answer!!

Marshall writes: Fortunately we are not living in a banana republic. There
is such a thing called due process of law and justice. There are 26 mercy
petitions pending before the President, of which Afzal Guru is the 26th. It
would be a travesty of justice if someone is picked up out -of-turn just to
fulfill the lust of some blood-thirsty citizens who want to use it as a
political tool to secure votes. Incidentally, when the BJP was in power, it
sat on the mercy petitions for over 6 years.

My response: Before writing above response Marshall should have recollected
the statement made my our President Abdul Kalama on his last day as
President saying that the file of Mercy Petition of Afzal was never sent to
him or to his office for Mercy Consideration or otherwise! And secondly
Afzal was arrested for is act in 2004 so where is the question of Mercy
Petition being kept pending for past 6 years arise? Check the facts again
and come back to the forum.

Best regards,

Dr. U. G. Barad

2008-12-05 Thread Frederick FN Noronha
Urban myth.

That's a hoax doing the rounds on the Net.

Some recent articles and a Dedicated Website on Section 49-0 Falsely
suggest that in case the number of votes recorded under Section 49-O
is greater than the maximum number of votes polled in favour of any of
the candidates, a repoll is held. However it is misleading since
nothing to this effect is mentiond either in any of the sections of
The Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961 or People's Representative Act
nor can it can be constured reading Section 49-0 in conjuction with
any other Section/ Act. In fact Post terrorist Attacks on Mumbai on
26th November 2008 an Urban Myth is being propogated through Internet
that a Re-Poll will be held in case the number of No Votes under
Section 49-O is more than the Margin of Victory.

I have heard that one can actively go to the polling booth and not vote for

It was an option during the paper ballot days to deliberately invalidate
your vote. It is possible that this
one though may be existing in law has been quietly removed when turning
the voting process into an electronic one.

With the current dissatisfaction against politicians but at the same
time no alternative emerging, this is an option that people can exercise.

Can someone who knows the constitution well confirm that such an option
exists or at least existed during the paper voting times ?

Goa mutations Form I XIV (part III)

See Part I II here
http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/message/7134

Well, I have two cases pending one at Panjim and the other at Vasco.

At Vasco
News paper ad / notice was giver mid Oct
Waited for required 15 days plus another 15 days.
Went to see the Talathi of Mutation, he said the file is with the CI (Circle
Inspector).
I then went to see the CI, he say it will take some time as he has plenty other
files pending before mine. But it took the talathi/computer dept 10 days to
transfer the file to the CI who is in the same building and same floor, a room
next to each other.
Gave CI for Chau Panni, he then took my file case no, and added to his priority
list with few others. At this time he said it will be done in 10 days. Waited
for 20 more days and seeing that nothing is being done (after checking on the
net), I phoned the talathi, TOM, (he gave me his no earlier, and you know
why). Guess what?
He says the file is now with his Sir.
Now, who is this (bloody) Sir?
It’s Mamlatdar.

Well, it means, another trip and another hafta?

At Panjim:
Newspaper ad/Notice put in late Sept. 2008.
After waiting for required 15 days and adding 15 more days, went to see the
TOI, he said the file is with CI. Went to see CI (Sagar), he was not there.
And I did not go to see him again.
My case is still pending as on date.
I received no intimation from the CI nor the Mamlatdar.

At Vasco, I paid for Chai-Panni to Village Talathi, TOI and the CI and yet my
case is pending (now with Mamlatdar). Payment scale being 200+500+200
respectively

At Panjim, I paid to no one yet.

Both the cases which I am dealing with are straight forward cases.

[Goanet] Newspaper circulation and costs for advertising

Hi,

About a small credit card size bw display ad will cost about Rs.2500
It is charged by the centimeter per column
A credit card or ATM card size would be about 5cm x 2columns
(which is roughly 2 x 3.2 in inches)

The same will cost you more or less depending upon the type of ad. E.g.

General (inside pages) It’s around Rs.2500

For deaths/ obituary ad it would be around Rs.1250.

For Tiatr/Drama or Konkani VCDs etc it would be around Rs. 600
(This 75% discount applies to Herald and for Tiatrists only, other NPs may
also give discount up to 25% in this drama catagory)

Front page it could be Rs.5000

Coloured (inside) it would be around Rs.5000

Up to 32 Credit cards will fit in one full page

Note: Actual Credit Card size is little bigger than 5cmx2cols

Foll pic may give you some idea about the sizes.( Classified add eg and rates
also shown) http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk11/1633256628/

As for NPs circulations, I think NT is the widest followed by H then GT (Less
than a year old TOI not known as the figure will only be clear once the
discounted first year of subscription ends in first week of May next year)

Also, what is the projected unit cost for an advertisement with the
dimensions 2 inches by 4 inches.

Does the advertiser have any say where that advertisement may appear in the

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Things like teaching people safety, civil behavior, driving

was left undone and unfinished. Perhaps we do not take to self-education too
kindly.

There was no honking, no startling the children in anyway including sudden
braking, yelling, leering, just, I presume a certain dignity towards them. That
image has stayed with me.

Some day I hope people are taught to look across classes and social
positions -- taking into consideration their circumstances.
I would think these are issues that the Governments Secretaries should be
looking at. This is not rocket science we are talking

People matter dammit. This business of taking, taking, taking -- has to end

We don't need terrorists to finish us all off. Our politicians are
doing an excellent job of it and are guaranteed to succeed sooner than

When playing a card game, we do have a choice of 52 cards from the

choice is restricted to the pack of politicians. Since this pack
consists entirely of jokers, it makes no difference which joker is
picked - the result is guaranteed to be a big ZERO!
Whilst Mumbai is still reeling in the aftermath of the terrorist

[Goanet] Poetry Wrap: Goan travels through India

2008-12-05 Thread brian mark mendonca

Poetry Wrap: Goan Travels through India

Besides readings in Delhi in 2008, Goan poet Brian Mendonça made whirlwind
visits from Delhi to mop up a few more states, viz. Kerala and Jharkhand – to
include in his second volume of poems 'A Peace of India: Poems in Transit'
(Forthcoming 2009).

This autumn Brian was welcomed at Jamia Millia Islamia, Central University, at
New Delhi. The event was the annual ‘Talimi Mela’ or ‘Educational Fair.’
Professor Shyamala Narayan, Head, Department of English, who graciously
extended the invitation, had also reviewed Brian’s debut volume Last Bus to
Vasco: Poems from Goa in the prestigious 'Journal of Commonwealth Literature'
published by Sage, London (Dec 2007, vol 42.1). ‘[Brian’s] first book of poems
. . . owes a lot to his travels through India. Goa is at the centre of the
poet’s sensibility, even as the poet faithfully captures the colourful variety
of multicultural, multilingual India,’ she writes.

Arriving at Jamia, Brian presented Prof Narayan a set of Mario Miranda’s
exquisite Postcards of Goa done in sepia as a souvenir of Goa. Dr Baran Rehman,
Coordinator – Book Fair, met them at the venue which was a warm pandal
sprouting from the road itself, amidst the lush greenery of the campus. Brian
seemed quite at home among the University students. He had interacted with the
students of Portuguese, at the Luso Fest organized by the Department of Romance
Languages, University of Delhi, same time a couple of years back.

After being introduced by Prof Narayan, Brian began by reading his poem ‘Last
Bus to Vasco’ following it up with ‘Requiem to a Sal,’ ‘UIMCF,’ and ‘May
Queen.’ He then played a mando and dulpods on his guitar.

A new feature this time was a preview of the poems from his forthcoming book 'A
Peace of India.' Brian had brought a wall map of India. He then asked the
young audience to look at the map and call out the name of a State – he would
then supply them with a poem written in/on it! ‘Haryana’ was the first called
out – and Brian read out ‘NH 1’ earlier published by the Sahitya Akademi; ‘UP’
[Uttar Pradesh] said another – and they were not disappointed with ‘Mathura.’
‘Kolkata’ said a third, and ‘Down by the Hooghly’ written at Prinsep Ghat
regaled the listeners. Prof Narayan, not to be left out, said ‘Kerala’. Brian
rose to the occasion with ‘Chingam 1’written in Trivandrum.

Time, of course, was running out. In the open session Brian read out a
rarely-read poem ‘In Conclusion’ after which he sat on the platform of the dais
and strummed ‘Goa Dourada’ in Portuguese which had all clapping their hands and
humming the tune.

The unforgettable event ended with a sumptuous repast at the Jamia dining hall
where succulent shammi kebabs, mutton do pyaza, pulao and gobi awaited us.
‘Welcome to Jamia’ wrote the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mushirul Hasan, who was
having his lunch. ‘Come again,’ he added, beaming. It was more than Brian could
ask for on that 3rd of November!

Brian looks forward to a reading in Anjuna, Goa before the year is done.

p.m... The meeting has been organised in the aftermath of the attacks at
Mumbai and the increase in terrorist attacks and communal violence in
different parts of India this year, with a view to express solidarity with
the victims and to look at ways to ensure that this never happens again.

What peace processes are on? What can we do to strengthen these peace
processes? Can peace be about war on terror? Can there be peace without
justice? Can terror be addressed without addressing the conditions that are
conducive for terror? What has the Government done about the recommendations
for peace of its own one-man committee on the Sanvordem-Curchorem

security as against ordinary security? These are some of the questions that
the meeting is expected to discuss.

a trap for a drug dealer who had promised to deliver 1 kg of heroin. However,
instead of the dealer, the two police constables, Rajendra Pednekar and
Kalidas Shetye, arrived at the spot with 750 grams of heroin and handed it
over to the decoy customer sent by the ANC. The duo were caught in the act.
When contacted, senior SP V V Chowdhary said, “We are inquiring into the
matter and will take appropriate action.”

[Goanet] A Billion Hands concert on 5th December in Mumbai

Subject: A Billion Hands

Dear Friend,

It is time to act, and here we present a platform for change, a platform for us
to come together and express some of the anger and anguish we felt over the
last few days. Express some of the frustration and helplessness that we felt.
And above all, a neutral platform for us to debate how each one of us can make
a difference to this effect.

Come, join hands at www.abillionhands.com, an initiative from Network18 that
pledges to root out terror. And to ensure that these horrors don’t get lost in
endless political debates, and eventually forgotten. Please help spread the
word, forward this to all your friends, and your family. It’ll also be nice if
you can change your profile status to I have joined www.abillionhands.com.

Ian Anderson Anoushka Shankar have graciously joined us in the movement
against terror, and are holding a Billion hands concert 0n Dec 5th, 2008  in
Mumbai. You can buy tickets for the concert on the site. The proceeds of this
will go directly to a charity.

Peace and Love

Team Network18

India is now a global super-power, taking its logical place amongst the other
nations, in terms of nuclear capability, economic independence and
technological superiority. It cannot afford to be a soft target to terrorism.

Here is forum to build public opinion around key issues facing India. Let's
contribute issues, and take a stand. As a first step, let’s sign this online
petition, which will be submitted to the President and the Prime Minister of
India by Network18 on Jan 26.
Remember - change starts with the individual. Each one of us matters!

[Goanet] Driving Ethics Have Reached Rock Bottom.

2008-12-05 Thread Jose Da Gama Pais
It is with great sadness we read almost everyday that accidents have
occurred.
Some known or unknown gets knocked down, the best result we see is that the
driver if alive
absconding from the site of the accident. Yes for obvious reasons.
Everybody has reached such a level of temperament that we will just stop and
take all our revenge. This time I have really felt that our roads cannot
digest any more cars.
two wheelers although a blessing for quick turnarounds are causing so much
of trouble.
Parking your vehicle around has become another nightmare.

But unfortunately we have seen like Miguel has said, it will be nice to note
to whom that Tanker which killed the wife of Retd. Judge Eurico Silva, but
is it of any use now..?
Is anybody going to take any actions..?? Do we have any infrastructure in
Place..??
Is our traffic cell equipped..??Unfortunately those Bullet 350 are like
cycles compared to the CBZ and the Victor's.. This is not going to be the
end at all.

We always, I have heard people blaming the Bhaille.. MH or other registered
vehicles for reckless driving but how careful are our fellow Goan
brethren..??
In Porvorim for example.. can anybody cross the road...safely or every time
he does it he is just lucky..??

May better sense prevail with the highest authority. and some real solution
is sort out rather than just having some committee and commission to look
into the matter.

[Goanet] Lion Roars

2008-12-05 Thread Lionel Messias
RTI - Right to Ignore *Mountain of a Mole Hill!*

Remember the hill that came crashing down at Porvorim, and caused an
upheaval in your travel routine. Then there was this other one, opposite the
Ribandar ferry to Divar. This one went unnoticed, the PWD got into the act
rather quickly, and now it looks like a resident there has turned the open
space nature created, into a private car park. In Goa landslides can be
advantageous too. Like, the misfortune to you at Porvorim, turned out to be
a fortune for many up in the hill opposite and down in the divide. Who
cleaned up the mess, that is. As of October 17, 2008 (apparently there is
more to this) Sneha Engineering of Duler in Mapusa was paid Rs 87,06,578 to
remove the soil and debris that came down. In keeping with the Goa
government's understanding of a natural law (justice delayed, is not justice
denied) to mean instead 'justice denied, is justice delayed' none of the
culprits involved have been brought to book till date.

The other beneficiary of this land slid is NB Dhargalkar of Muquem in
Cuncolim who bid Rs 1,23,49,112 to build protection measures on the road
side embankment including construction of a retaining wall exactly 600
metres in length. To be precise, from the Km. 1/200 point to the Km. 1/800
point. I have no idea how much it cost the Chinese to restore selective
touristy portions of the Great Wall. Even if I did, would it matter? Would
it matter for that matter if you and I objected if the guys in the opposite
of the hill, now decided to smother the 'restored' hill side with ornamental
plants imported from Bali? Would it?

*Back to Books*

Trying to unlock the mysteries of the Central Library, I was offered this
spiel by the Directorate of Art Culture. I report verbatim: Construction
work of the new building was initiated by the Directorate of Education and
the initial plans were submitted by the Central Library in consultation with
library professionals to the Directorate of Education. Further, GSIDC had
also consulted eminent library professionals in this regard. I thought I
was better than the enemy at this RTI stuff after all these years. I am
humbled. I never thought of asking this bleeding question: 'Please give the
names of all the well-known, renowned, distinguished and famous librarians
you consulted?' Then of course, their reply would have been: 'We did not
consult any librarians, we only consulted library professionals.' RTI, as
you can see also means Right to Ignore.

I asked what books will be kept at the Central Library, the answer:
encyclopedias, handbooks, conference proceedings, yearbooks, manuals, law
books, general reading books like novels, dramas, poetries, memoirs, humour,
letters, biographies, basic books on engineering, science, architecture,
social studies, psychology, religion, economics, political science,
education, public administration, commerce, customs and tradition,
management, house building, sculptures, music, sports, philosophy, history
and geography along with maps, charts, CDs and DVDs. Phew!

GOA FOR PEACE

Citizens' Initiatives for Communal Harmony has organised a meeting
'Goa for Peace on 6th December, 2008, at T. B. Cunha Hall from 4.30
p.m. to 6.30 p.m... The meeting has been organised in the aftermath of
the attacks at Mumbai and the increase in terrorist attacks and
communal violence in different parts of India this year, with a view
to express solidarity with the victims and to look at ways to ensure
that this never happens again.

What peace processes are on? What can we do to strengthen these peace
processes? Can peace be about war on terror? Can there be peace
without justice? Can terror be addressed without addressing the
conditions that are conducive for terror? What has the Government done
about the recommendations for peace of its own one-man committee on
the Sanvordem-Curchorem riots? What is the distribution of national
resources for high profile security as against ordinary security?
These are some of the questions that the meeting is expected to
discuss.

Do come and participate in the meeting.

[Goanet] India in Mourning: My Week in Mumbai and Goa (John Landis)

2008-12-05 Thread Bosco D'Mello
Mumbai, India--My wife Deborah and I arrived in Mumbai at 10pm on Wednesday,
November 26th. We were spending the night in Mumbai on our way to Goa early
the next morning, where I was being honored and Deborah was giving a Master
Class at the International Film Festival of India. There was the usual
crowded confusion at the airport and we were unaware of anything out of the
ordinary. A man was holding a sign with a list of names, including
Deborah's. He drove us to the hotel listed on our itinerary where the desk
clerk told us that our reservation had been canceled. After the 20-hour trip
from LA, this did not make us happy and we called our Indian contact who
said he was at the airport waiting for us, to stay put and that he would
come and get us. He moved us to the Leela Kempinski Hotel, closer to the
airport.

In Goa, the mood at the International Film Festival of India was somber and
most of the gala events canceled. However, the Festival, with its
international offering of films, soldiered on to great success. Goa was
quiet, although the Anjuna flea market was filled with Russian and European
tourists. Despite the heat, humidity and gunfire, our Indian hosts treated
us royally at the India Film Festival. The local government insisted we have
bodyguards our entire stay in Goa. We had two alternating bodyguards, a
quiet Goan plainclothes cop named Johnson, and a sari clad village woman who
proudly showed me her Colt 45 that she kept in her handbag. With two members
of the international jury (and our security), and we took the rusted
flat-bottomed car ferry across the Mandovi River to Divar Island to visit an
old Portuguese church. We were surprised to find that a big service was in
progress in the middle of the day. Goans dressed in white massed around the
church entrance and every pew was filled. A flower-laden hearse arrived and
within moments, we heard the sounds of a small brass band leading mourners
into the church. This was the funeral for the first casualty of the Mumbai
attacks, the young chef of the Taj Hotel, murdered in the hotel kitchen. All
of India is in mourning.

[Goanet] Vasco based cops getting efficient overnight? or just media savvy?

2008-12-05 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dears,

Below are three clippings from the Navhind Times today 5/12/08]

Days after reports and even editorial criticism in the NT [besides the Prudent
Media video footageon 4.12/08], the Coastal Police Station, Mamagoa
Harbour/Vasco has Intercepted two fishing trawlers.

Hey! Don't go into a dream sequence imagining the CPS staff, freshly back from
Law Disorder duty at INOX or Kala Academy for IFFI, chasing pirates in their
speed boats and blazing away with 20 mm cannons or putting a shell across the
bow of the erring vessel. All the CPS-Harbour has is a canoe with an outboard
motor ...and no technical staff to operate it!!

The boats were apparently detained after they had docked to pick up provisions
and to get medical treatment to one of the ailing fisherman! Makes a good news
item ... Detaining [NOT arresting] 18 fishermen just the same. The
Actionable word intercept also embellishes the news to make it worthy of
mention in a James Bond Film.

The 300 persons held or rounded up [again NOT arrested] in the raids at
Khariwada will turn out to be Oriya or Bengali fishermen employed by the
fishing trawlers. If they are detained over the weekend, your fish will cost
you dearly.

I do hope that the accident of Justice Eurico Santana da Silva's car was not
on purpose. He lost his wife, Thelma, in the tragic accident and is seriously
injured. As the Chairman of the Goa State Police Complaints Authority [the SPCA
for Police men], he was a thorn in the side of many a senior policeman, hauling
them up for harrassing the people whom they are supposed to serve. Accidents
can be quite convenient. They say Mark Fernandes and Evagrio Jorge died of an
accident right near what is now the Panaji Residency. When I was still a school
boy, my classmate Debashsih Burman's, father died of an accident. Accidents do
happen, you know. these are dangerous days. See what happened in the accident
of 9/11 in New York. Why do they build such tall buildings when there are
planes flying in the air? If one values one's life, one should travel in an APC
or a Battle tank!

Even after the transfer of Mohan Naik and others from Panaji city to Altinho,
it looks like the Indian sun [Ravi] will still miss home. May be Public Works
will be a suitable golden handshake. With all the fishermen from Orissa being
harrassed, Churchill may have an uphill task ...and I am not Joking! ;-)

Mog asundi

Miguel

PS

I just love the SRK in Rab ne banaya jodi look of the Mapusa MLA, also a
Ba-bush at a time Obama is saying to the other Hogo- Bush to George Bush or to
use Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's father's words, Po da ;-)

Coastal police intercept two fishing trawlers

VASCO Ensuring that no stone remains unturned in view of the security aspect
in the coastal belt of Mormugao, the MPT, central industrial security force,
Harbour Coastal Police, Mormugao police and Vasco police in a joint operation,
intercepted a fishing trawler from Alleppy, Kerala on Thursday, and have booked
the crew onboard, on suspicion and failing to produce identity cards.
In another incident, the Harbour Coastal Police have also detained one fishing
trawler from Tamil Nadu, which had entered into Goan waters seeking medical

trawlers have been arrested under section 41 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

It is 50% true. The first part that such an option exists is true;
the second part that the election would be countermanded is false.

Howeve, imagine what the impact would be if indeed there
were more votes saying none of the above than to a candidate.

I dont think the winning candidate would have much legitimacy and
the naysers can then keep their own candidate the next time around
because they would be more confident of winning.

[Goanet] Mumbai Attack thereafter!!

2008-12-05 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Why is it that Sonia Gandhi, joker Lalu Prasad and Mulayam singh has not
even made a single statement condemning the Mumbai attacks? Are these trios
trying to make India an M-C majority country?

So much so that even Ratan Tata made an irresponsible statement that the
attacks could not have been prevented, with extra security. Much to
everyone's surprise is our PM inviting the ISI Chief of Pakistan to visit
India for what?

All these sequences need to be studied in greater details by Indians.

[Goanet] 5 terrorists involved in Mumbai attacks may be at large:(NYTimes)

2008-12-05 Thread edward desilva
NEW YORK: Five terrorists involved in the Mumbai terror attacks may be still at
large, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing evidence found on the
trawler on which they travelled from Karachi to India's financial hub.
The newspaper report counters the Mumbai Police which claimed that there were
only ten terrorists in the vessel out of which nine were killed and one was
arrested.
Based on evidence found on the trawler, it was possible that five other men
were involved in the plot and were still at large, the Times said.
The report also said that Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the Lashkar-e-Taiba
'commander', was in Karachi for the last three months to help organise the
terrorist attack in Mumbai.
The Mumbai attackers also kept in contact with their handlers in Pakistan with
cellphones as they rounded up guests at the two hotels -- Taj and Oberoi, it
said quoting a Pakistani official in contact with the terror outfit.
The attackers left a trail of evidence in a satellite phone they left behind on
the fishing trawler they hijacked near Karachi at the start of their 500-mile
journey to Mumbai, the report said.
The phone contained the telephone numbers of Yusuf Muzammil, a LeT militant
considered to be mastermind of the Mumbai attack, Rehman and a number of other
Lashkar militants, the Times said, citing a report on the Mumbai siege prepared
by M J Gohel and Sajjan M Gohel, two security analysts who direct the
Asia-Pacific Foundation in London.
The numbers dialed on the phone found on the trawler used to call Muzammil
matched the numbers on the cell phones recovered from the Taj and Oberoi
hotels, the report said.
In one of the hotels, a gunman asked several Indian guests what caste they
belonged to and what state they came from, the Times quoted an official who
interviewed the guests as saying.
Once the attacker found out these details, he then called someone believed to
be Muzammil, who was also identified by the surviving gunman and who was in
Lahore, according to phone records recovered by investigators.
The surviving guests said the attacker told the person on the other end of the
phone the guests' details and asked whether they should be killed or not.
At one point, a guest said one of the calls seemed to be a conference call with
two people on the other end.
Once the calls were finished, the paper said, the attacker moved the small
group of guests, who did not know what their fate would be, into a room. When
the attackers became distracted by tear gas fired by the police, the hostages
managed to escape.
In another instance, the Times said, the gunmen forced a Singaporean hostage at
the Oberoi hotel, Lo Hwei Yen, to call her husband in Singapore. She told him
that the hostages were demanding that Singaporean officials tell India not to
try a rescue operation. The next day, Lo was killed, the foundation's report
said.
Investigators found that after the gunmen killed her, they used the phone she
had called her husband with, it said.
The worrying scenario is that Muzammil may have ordered her execution along
with two other hostages that were found murdered in the same room, the report
was quoted as saying.

[Goanet] Will Local and National media do this?

2008-12-05 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Has any Goan or Indian has noticed that Italian doll Sonia has not been
blamed at all for anything about Mumbai Blast! Instead Indian media is seen
dancing tunes of Italy and local media is seen dancing National media
directives..why?

Media should come out with coverage about the reality that Congressmen are
not even allowed to go to the toilet even without the permission of the High
Priestess!! So how could Congressmen (so called) have acted saving Mumbai
crisis despite their love and affection to Mumbai?

With this back ground Media should come out with details as to how highly
manipulative Sonia has cunningly avoided all criticisms against her while
holding the reigns of absolute power!

They should also come out with coverage as to why a single finger is seen
raised against her by media or by the pseudo-secularists Indians.

Will Media show that even right now she is laughing at Indian mentality!

Media should also come out with statement whether SHE is absolved of all her
misdeeds in India?

[Goanet] Sonia's presence in Delhi is costing In dia dearly

2008-12-05 Thread Dr. U. G. Barad
Francois Gautier in his article published recently says that Sonia’s
presence in Delhi is costing India dearly. To read more on this article
click the link provided:

http://francoisgautier.wordpress.com/2008/12/03/sonia%e2%80%99s-presence-in-
delhi-is-costing-india-dearly/

For those who have problem with internet connectivity the same article is
appended here below:

by Francois Gautier
02 Dec 2008
Source: New Indian Express

In 1898, the French writer Emile Zola wrote an open letter to the then
French president in the newspaper L’Aurore, titled j’accuse (‘I accuse’),
where he accused the French government of anti- Semitism towards Captain
Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer unfairly condemned for treason.

Now it is time for the people of India to say openly that which many,
including within the Congress, think secretly and may utter in the privacy
of their chambers. It is not about Manmohan Singh, it is not even about
Shivraj Patil, the fall guy; it is about that one person, the Eminence Grise
of India. She who pulls all the strings, She whose shadow looms menacingly
over so many, She who holds no portfolio, is just a simple elected MP, like
540 others, but rules like an empress.

Sometimes, one’s very physical presence at the top is enough to move things,
to influence the course of events. One word from Her, a glance, a frown, are
enough to put the whole heavy, inert, unwilling machinery of India’s
bureaucracy and political system in full motion. Sometimes She need not say
anything: in the true tradition of Bhakti, Her ministers, Her secretaries,
interpret Her silences and rush to cater to Her western and Christian
identity.

Nevertheless, she has said and acted enough so that one day she may stand
accused on the pages of History for what she must have done to India.

I’accuse Sonia Gandhi as being responsible for the tragedy of Mumbai, having
emasculated India’s intelligence agencies by stopping them from
investigating terror attacks in the last four years, including the Mumbai
train blasts. She has also neutralised the ATS by ordering them at all costs
to ferret out ‘Hindu terrorism’, which if it exists, has wrought minuscule
damage compared to what Islamic terror has done since 2004.

Did the US send a warning to India that there may be an attack on Mumbai and
that the Taj would be one of the targets? Were these ignored because the ATS
was too busy chasing Hindu ‘terrorists’ on Sonia’s orders? I accuse Sonia
and her government of having made the NSG the laughing stock of the world.
How many times did the NSG (who took ten hours to reach Mumbai) claim that
it had “sanitised the Taj and that the operation was over” and how many
times did a bomb go off immediately after? For the last 20 years, the NSG
has guarded VIPs and has become soft. See the comments of Israeli terror
specialists, who said the NSG should have first sanitised the immediate
surroundings of the places of conflict, kept the bystanders and press (who
gave terrorists watching TV in the Taj rooms a perfect report of the
security forces’ whereabouts) out of the place, gathered enough information
about the position of the terrorists and hostages before taking action,
instead of immediately engaging the terrorists, and ensuring the deaths of
so many hostages.
I accuse Sonia of having let her Christian and Western background, in four
years, divide India on religious and caste lines in a cynical and methodical
manner.

I accuse Sonia of weakening India’s spirit of sacrifice and courage, so that
20 terrorists (or less) held at ransom the financial capital of India for
more than three days.

I accuse Sonia Gandhi of always pointing the finger at Pakistan, when
terrorism in India is now mostly homegrown, even if it takes help, training,
refuge and arms from Pakistan; of not warning Indians of the grave dangers
of Islamic terror for cynical election purposes.

I accuse Sonia of being an enemy of the Hindus, who always gave refuge to
persecuted minorities, and who are the only people in the world to accept
that God may manifest under different names, in different epochs, using
different scriptures.

I accuse Sonia Gandhi of taking advantage of India’s respect for women, its
undue fascination with the Gandhi name, and its stupid mania for White Skin.

I’accuse Sonia of exploiting the Indian Press’ obsession with her. She
hardly ever gave interview in 20 years, except scripted ones to NDTV, yet
the Press always protects her, never blames her and keeps silent over her
covert role.

I’accuse Sonia and her government of trying to make heroes of subservient
and inefficient men to hide the humiliation of Mumbai 26/11. Before going to
his death, Hemant Karkare, the ATS chief, was shown on television clumsily
handling his helmet, as someone who uses it very rarely. Why did he die of
bullet wounds in the chest when he was wearing a bullet-proof vest? Either
Indian vests are inferior quality or he was not wearing one.

How did the terrorists who killed him

Re: [Goanet] Pathetic journalism by Barkha Dutt

2008-12-05 Thread edpinto
Forwarding a mail from an aggrieved television viewer. I couldnt agree more
with him. Ethics and sensitivity towards the plight of other human beings
are not qualities that are urgently needed only by the much maligned
political class. The electronic media coverage of teh Mumbai mayhem was
crass, shallow and aimed to pander to the lowest qualities in human
nature. - Diana Pinto

Dear All.!!!

We always blame the police for not doing their jobs. How can they do their
jobs when we have our journalists feed vital information to the terrorists.
On the Times News channel when there was a panel of speakers called online,
there was an Isreali person by the name of Dr. Kedar on the panel. Even Dr.
Kedar had specified that the constant airing of live news with all the
information was working in favour of the terrorists and the their counter
parts controlling this operation from some other part of the world.

Read the below email.
Appalling journalism. Absolute blasphemy! As I watch the news from home, I
am dumbfounded to see Barkha Dutt of NDTV break every rule of ethical
journalism in reporting theMumbai mayhem. Take a couple of instances for
example:

· In one instance she asks a husband about his wife being stuck, or
held as a hostage. The poor guy adds in the end about where she was last
hiding. Aired! My dear friends with AK-47s, our national news is helping
you. Go get those still in. And be sure to thank NDTV for not censoring this
bit of information.

· In another instance, a General sort of suggests that there were no
hostages in Oberoi Trident. (Clever.) Then, our herione of revelations calls
the head of Oberoi, and the idiot confirms a possibility of 100 or more
people still in the building. Hello! Guys with guns, you've got more goats
to slay. But before you do, you've got to love NDTV and more precisely Ms.
Dutt. She's your official intelligence from Ground zero.

You do not need to be a journalist to understand the basic premise of
ethics, which starts with protecting victims first; and that is done by
avoiding key information from being aired publiclyâ?such as but not limited
to revealing the number of possible people still in, the hideouts of
hostages and people stuck in buildings.
Imagine you're one of those sorry souls holed-up in one of those bathrooms,
or kitchens. A journalist pulls your kin outside and asks about your last
contact on national television, and other prying details. In a bout of
emotion, if they happen to reveal more details, you are sure going to hell.
Remember these are hotels, where in all likelihood, every room has a
television. All a terrorist needs to do is listen to Ms. Barkha Dutt's
latest achievement of extracting information from your relative, based on
your last phone-call or SMS. And you're shafted courtesy NDTV.1
If the terrorists don't manage to shove you in to your private hell, the
journalists on national television will certainly help you get there. One of
the criticisms about Barkha Dutt on Wikipedia reads thus:
During the Kargil conflict, Indian Army sources repeatedly complained to her
channel that she was giving away locations in her broadcasts, thus causing
Indian casualties.
Looks like the idiot journalist has not learnt anything since then. I join a
number of bloggers pleading her to shut the f*** up.
Update: In fact, I am willing to believe that Hemant Karkare died because
these channels showed him prepare (wear helmet, wear bullet-proof vest.) in
excruciating detail live on television. And they in turn targeted him where
he was unprotected. The brave officer succumbed to bullets in the neck.

[Goanet] More gunmen may be around: Experts(CIA)

2008-12-05 Thread edward desilva
WASHINGTON: Several attackers may have survived the three-day siege of Mumbai
that killed 171 people last week, analysts said on Thursday.
“I think there are more. My sources say (there were) at least 23 gunmen,” said
Farhana Ali, a former CIA and Rand Corp counterterrorism analyst and expert on
militant networks.
Ali, who visited India and Pakistan last month before the attacks, said her
information came from Pakistan.
“If that’s true, that makes one wonder why we haven’t seen more attacks? Are
they lying low?” she said, “I think they (Indian authorities) are bracing
themselves for more,” she said at a briefing for the US government
counterterrorism and military officials, and others.
Indian authorities have said 10 gunmen took part in the Mumbai attacks last
week. But earlier reports cited that there were around 25 gunmen.
Authorities captured one, who was interrogated, and killed nine. Indian and US
officials blame the attacks on Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
A US counterterrorism official said, “Is there a possibility that some LeT
terrorists are still out there? Yes, but we have to wait and see because all
the information is not in yet.”
David Kilcullen, who has served as a senior counterterrorism adviser to US
General David Petraeus and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, said he agreed
that were probably more attackers, who equipped themselves with fake
identification and wore Western clothes with clean-shaven faces, indicating
they probably did not view the attack as a suicide operation.
“The fact that they lost nine out of 10 identified attackers killed doesn’t
necessarily indicate that it was intended to have all those people dying,” he
said.
“The Indians said there were 10 attackers, based on the fact that they captured
one and killed nine - you have to assume there are more out there,” he said.
He noted, however, that there was no short-term follow-up attack on a target
such as a hospital treating victims. The fighters had high-level professional
training, Kilcullen said.

none other than a Police Constable Hemant Kankonkar who was actually involved
in the burglary.  Mr. Kankonkar was attached to the Police Outpost at Dabolim

2008-12-05 Thread John Gomes
Since 1988 when I lost my teenaged son in a road accident,I tried
everything, PILs, call on CMs,DG Police,Traffic SPs, Collectors, RTOs, Chief
Secretaries, NGos . I found good suggestions cannot be implemented, cockeyed
political ideas prevail, and what we have now is madness on the roads. There
is no one to implement the rules, specially during rush or night hours.
Untrained traffic cops whose body language is lethargy, corruption
everywhere be it liscense issuing, checking of helmets etc whilst flagrant
violation of traffic rules goes unoticed and unpunished, politicians who
think we are their subjects and their red light cars zoom through like laws
do not apply to them, merry hell on the roads! Precious lives like my son

Hi Joe,

Looked at your downloaded pictures and your comments.
It is a heckuva job!
Great service. A picture speaks a thousand words.

This would be a good year to evaluate IFFI and its benefits to Goan and Goa.
Only when we stop having something,  we miss what we sometimes take for granted.
Then we say, Doggone it! or the konkani version of the same.

 JoeGoaUk

It does not look like iffi any more now.
No music, no sound, no dances, no crowd etc.
All one can see there about 27 food stalls on the iffi promenade (including 10
Bhelpuri wala gaddas).
As such for non-delegates, it was not an IFFI festival but a sort of Food
Festival mainly with north Indian dishes. Their business too is badly affected
now.
The only Kingfisher Village (with live music and dances) which was the only
attraction is now taken off too from 28th Nov.
When asked, the policemen said it was due to state's mourning (former PM VP
Singh).

'Local salt increases thyroid incidence'

Study Says More Women Than Men Affected

Preetu Nair | TNN

Panaji: The village salt produced in the salt pans in Goa may add a
distinctive flavour to the Goan cuisine, but it is also resulting in
increase in incidence of thyroid diseases in the state, reveals a latest
study conducted in Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC). It also reveals
that the problem of thyroid diseases is high amongst women, as compared to
men in the state.

A study on thyroid diseases was conducted by GMC's pathology department.
About 2196 samples of thyroid diseases patients were studied between 2004
and 2007. About 95 % of patients were females, who were tested after they
complained of neck swelling. While about 25 percent detected with thyroid
diseases were in the early age group between 12 and 25, the rest were women
in the age group between 30 and 50, said Pathology department head Dr
Wiseman Pinto, who has conducted the study. Of the 8000 biopsy conducted in
a year, the thyroid biopsies comprise 10.27 %.

Re: [Goanet] Introductory Lecture on VEDIC MATHEMATICS

2008-12-05 Thread Santosh Helekar
It appears that the International Center is fixated on this fraud called Vedic
mathematics. Last year they had a 3-day workshop on it. What purpose is served
by wasting their time on this fabrication, and corrupting young minds in the
process? Instead, why not have a seminar on the authentic works of true Indian
mathematical geniuses such as Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara, Mahavira and
Ramanujan?

Here are archived posts of mine that explain why Vedic Mathematics is a
fraudulent concoction that is neither Vedic nor mathematical, and how all kinds
of loopy postmodernist canards are raised to justify it.

[Goanet] Seminaron RP 2021-16th Dec 2008-Nanutel, Margao

2008-12-05 Thread Miguel Braganza

Dears,

A copy of the regional plan is available at http://goagovt.nic.in/tcp/ . Also
see www.savegoa.com

Dr. Jenifer Lewis Kamat from Vasco, with a Ph.D in engineering from
Birmingham-UK, is perhaps the most qualified Civil Engineer in Goa today. You
bet, I am proud to know her and her engineer husband, Rotarian Bharat Kamat,
personally.

I do hope Mr. S.T. Puttaraju goes well prepared to answer how public roads
have disappeared from DRP 2021 plans, how Eco Sensitive Zone-1 paddy fields
in Chicalim wetlands have been painted as settlement zones, how
non-convertible Private Forests have become convertible Orchards or
directly as industial estates in the DRP-2021.

May be it will be nice to invite the Margao based graphic artist, Mr. Ashok da
Costa, to explain the disrepencies in the DRP 2021 plans which he reportedly
plotted for the Task Force on RP 2021 from which fortunately the Goa Bachao
Abhiyan extricated itself before the final report fulfilling the prophesy of
druze poet from Lebanon, Khalil Gibran, when he wrote thus in The Prophet:

No Problem approaches a Man except with an Opportunity in its hands. We
grabbed that Opportunity while the moon overshadowed the sun on 01 August,
2008, ...and have hugged her tight ever since.

It is time to tell the Emperor [of Goa] that he is naked ... just as his name
says it in Sanskrit and many other Indian languages. That is the naked Truth.

After that, let Goa go to the Drawing Board ...village by 189 villages, taluka
by taluka for  North and South Goa Districts. Let the District Planning
Committees [DPC] finalise their plans for each half of Goa ...and send it from
their drawing boards to the TCP Board. That is what is called Bottom-Up
Planning. [What we say at cocktail dinners is BottomS-Up ...and it is often
unplanned.]. That is what the Article 243 of Constitution of India says
.and the Governments in India are sworn by the Constitution of India, not
by the Regional Plans!!

Since Civil Engineers know how to read Plans, it is hoped they will expose
the Renegades!!

The Goa Bachao Abhiyan [GBA], the Ganv Ghor Rakhon Manch [GGRM],  the Council
for Social Justice Peace, Utth Goenkara [minus Advocate-at-large], Aldona
Bachao Abhiyan, Taleigao Bachao Abhiyan, the Village-level Civic and Consumer
Forums of GOACAN, the Centre for Panchayati Raj [CPR], the Panchayat Mahila
Shakti Abhiyan [PMSA], the Zilla Panchayats, the Village Gram Sabhas and others
will be debating the DRP 2021 with the people of Goa. Those who do not debate
and take the issue forward are heretics who do not bear witness to the Truth
and , to borrow Dr. Oscar Rebelo's terminology, anti-Goans !!

I do not know if anti-Goans who pervert the Constitution of India can be true
Indians ...even if they get mistaken recognition as leaders like some
smugglers who become Freedom Fighter pensioners by paying for a co-prisoner
certificate in the 1970s as candidates pay for selection as PSI's or RTO
inspectors now. How can one uphold the law with a stolen goose in hand or bank?

[Goanet] Konkani adages: A long loin-cloth, an useless boast

2008-12-05 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Rico,

Laamb til naikanche, ghorant hal bailanche
Longer the 'til' (vermillion line applied on forehead after morning
puja) of the lords, greater the trouble for their wives at home

The actual connotation of Bail in a Naik's house is generally about a
Naikinn or external service provider also known as Kolvont, Rakhel or
Thaylleli ...the woman ...other than one's wife ...who was kept at home by
the Naik or Sawkar. This system was similar to the Devdasi system but without
the elaborate dedication in the temple as at Soundatti or Yellapur till CM
Gundu Rao had the guts to stop it by force [In 1980, even a lady Superintendent
of Police was paraded nude while trying to prevent the practice. In 1981 Gundu
Rao sent Armed Police in full riot gear and issued shoot at sight orders to
finally stop the teribble practice of dedication once and for all times]

There is a reason why the word laamb is used instead of vhoddlo to describe
the Til or Tilak

To translate that as mere harrassment of wife by an externally devout Hindu of
a higher social bracket such as Naik or Lieutenant [as in Naik Hawaldar or
Naik Subedar], is to forget history and context of the saying.

Mor sundor, paiem kalle
The peacock is beautiful but his legs are dark

Would also translate as Even a beautiful peacock has black feet meaning
metaphorically Even the apparently beautiful have something to hide.

Literal translation hardly do justice to the beautiful sayings in Konkani.

Morunk zai ieketch pavtti, toiar raunk sobar pavtti
One must die but once, but be prepared all the time.

That is the unfortunate truth for the brave. Cowards die a thousand times,
anyway! ;-)

I would also suggest that TSKK or GKA look at the orthography/spelling
Perhaps the suggested correct spelling of once is yekech.

Fr. Matthew Almeida sj's book Konkani Course in Roman Script available for
Rs.250/- at Broadway Book Centre and the GKA book 'Methodology orf Writing
Konkani in Roman script available at GKA at Patto, opposite Shyansundar Photo
studio for Rs.20/- are good guides, even though they differ slightly on some
issues. There is still some confusion ...but we are on the right track.

The good news is that Daniel D'Souza's Konknni Martir Florian Vaz Puroskar
winning  book Koslich Malis Nastana not only won the KBM award this year, but
has also gone into a revised edition. This is something rare in Konkani
publication [other than text books and orthography] . in any script !!

Having said that, it is really wonderful that Valmiki Faleiro is documenting
some of the sayings that may otherwise be lost to posterity. Great job in
itself. I hope we can help to make it better.

Mog asundi.
