X'Mas special - Just for you

I remember those days where I often injured my knees, legs or hands just for a
toffee or a chocolate costing less than 5 paise each .

It was on the X’Mas day sports organized by the local sport Club at Church
complex.
X’Mas father would come on a motor-bike, and we run after him. He then go to a
central place like in front of the Church ‘Patto’ a rough cemented floor where
he used to throw sweets/ chocolates up in the air and we as kids rushed to get
one and I often got none but came home with injury on my knees etc

When I was capturing this video and even watching the footage at home, tears
rolled down seeing kids running after the Father X’Mas or the bullock cart on
which he was riding.
I liked it so much that I spent almost 2 hours there and captured about 15
minutes of video footage which is now being reduced to less than 6

Not that we had no money to buy sweets..
Kids are kids after all!

We may have grown old now
But can we just forget our that part of life?

I wish you all a merry X’Mas
And a happy new year 2009

The right to convert

Thanks Selma for missing me on Goanet. Should I construe it as love or
hate Anyway your penchant for conjuring up bizarre examples to buttress
your points are amazing. In contradiction of reality, the above
examples wouldn't come close to being reasonable unless Hindus are
killing their Christian neighbors everyday just the way Islamists are
doing. The same lack of in-depth knowledge on reality is showing in
your hesitance to come to grip with the hypothesis that the mayhem in
Orrisa may not be Hindus v/s Christians. I agree with you that innocent
Christians were attacked in this recent spurt in communal violence
which I do not condone nor justify. I also believe that there can be no
place for violence when it is fuelled by religious hatred. The guilty
must be punished irrespective of any religious group he belongs
including VHP, RSS or Bajrang Dal.

I do not want to elaborate on conversions or communal violence as there
are scores of websites you can find to read on these topics. Regards

*Kuwait: *Goan Cultural Center-Kuwait celebrated the Christmas Tree
celebrations with pomp and pageantry recently at the beautifully decorated
premises of the Carmel School, Kheitan, Kuwait. As the sun moved in the sky
spreading rays, the guests started to pour in at the venue, exchanging
greetings and good wishes with tons of smiles.

The venue wore a truly great festive look and with Santa "Pai Natal"
arriving with his bagful of goodies, the children as well as adults went
into the mode of ad delirium. The celebrations were laced with variety
entertainment programs with DJ Mario sending the pulses racing.

The fancy dress competition in the category of one to six years was a really
delightful sight and Master Ryan and Rhea Marshall emerging as the deserving
winners whereas, in the category of 7-12 years Henrietta Barbosa and Shania
Rebello captured the winning crowns.

Another beautiful program was a Rainbow dance choreographed by Effie de
Mello and Corraine Santos. Christmas hampers draw kept the guests sharing
anxious moments in which Sheila Rebello won a LCD monitor, Mr. Max won a
Samsung Fridge, Gaurish Naik was presented a Microwave and Rita Vijoy
winning a National brand juicer.

Besides, there were more 26 prizes for hamper draw winners apart from very
attractive spot prizes. Glamorous Shirley was selected as the most
tantalizingly attractive guest on the floor. The Christmas Tree Celebrations
were patronized by Mr and Mrs. Sandra Dastani as very special guests. The
Christmas Tree Celebrations were sponsored by Global Express Worldwide and
Mughal Mahal Group of exquisite restaurants. Eng. Suresh Naik, president of
Goan Cultural Center warmly welcomed the guests and Carmo Santos, Chairman
of Goan Cultural Centre proposed a laudable vote of thanks.

Finally praise and appreciation goes to Compare Allwyn William Fernandes for
beautifully controlling the wave lengths with humour and zest. A sumptuous
buffet completed the glittering celebrations.
The judges for the competitions were Jossy Fernandes, Sunny Nazareth &
Sandra Dastani. The official photographer was Goa's famous Rewon Gomes and
the Official videographer Joe Almeida were thanked by the organizers.
The Carol Singing group headed by Lorraine De Mello with Fredrico De Mello
on Keyboard, Gilberto on the base and Merwyn Fernandes on the violin graced
the occasion with Christmas carols heralding the good tidings of the season
to the delight of the attendees. The success of the celebrations goes to
all the team members who worked tirelessly.
The Goan Cultural Centre is the only recognized and registered Goan
organization with the Embassy of India to hold a Christmas Tree programme
for its members and the Goan community this year. The festive crowd thanked
the organizers for their hospitality and a fun-filled day of games of
skills, music, prayers and festivity and wished everyone season's greetings
and a very prosperous new year to all residents of Kuwait.

[Goanet] Ref: What a Dog's Life Sir Jee !!

2008-12-23 Thread Freddy Fernandes
What a Dog's Life Sir Jee

Dog is man's best friend - Bouv vou vou, mine is a royal family that came from
and around the Alps, you surprised ? Bow vou, I am called the German Shepard,
only higher middleclass and the rich can afford to have me in and around the
house, I have to have super and well balanced diet, beauticians to take care of
my nails, teeth, fur and tail, doctors to take care of my cold, coughs and other
ailments and to give the necessary injections and boosters to keep me fit,
healthy and alert.

One day a family came to the pet shop where I was kept in the cage, to tell you
the truth I hate cages, the small boy and girl were very excited, they had
actually come to buy a gold fish but when the kids saw me, the lost their
interest in the gold fish and told their day they wanted me, I too was excited
but my price tag was a bit high for this lower middle class family who traveled
on a scooter, the kids were adamant to have me as their Christmas gift, they
were ready to forfeit new clothes, shoes and Christmas goodies and after a lot
of deliberation and adjustment in their budget they finally took me home, the
owner of the pet shop gave them a certificate of authenticity and family
history, I was surprised that humans were so fussy about our ancestry and
authenticity compared to their own.

The kids were over the moon to have me in the midst of them, their love was very
genuine, their parents too, liked me, theirs was an old house with a small
veranda, a small house was hastily made for me and I was eternally grateful as
this was much better than the cage in the pet shop, They called me "Rambo" , now
what sort of a name was that ? Every one was nice to me and I just couldn't wait
for the kids to be back from school to play with me, though they were very young
their trained me very well and I would feel proud when I they showed me off to
their visitors and I would happily oblige when asked to perform tricks that they
taught me. I became their most prized possession or it seem like that till my
master had his 9 to 5 job, he was very hardworking and was dedicated to his
family, did not drink too, but then, slowly but surely things started changing,
I was keenly watching the changes, as dogs, we tend to notice things much before
the humans do.

My Master started leaving home early and coming back late, I could here a few
musical phone rings and was amused to find that both the kids had mobiles, it
was not long before the boy started zooming off on his own motor bike, my master
often staggered home late at night, with tell tale marks over his clothing,
fights and arguments increased and as the family outings began to decrease,
there was no time for each other and me too, I was depressed and longed for
their hugs and kisses, the intensity and the frequency diminished and nobody
played with me anymore, the kids were very busy with their new found toys the
mobiles or the video games.

We had to hastily leave our home and live in a huge structure with a big
compound wall, it was awesome sight, big bungalow, garden and compound wall and
a super luxury Sedan in the driveway, whow Bouv Bouv ! I thought my master had
won a lottery and I was elated with my new home but my happiness was short
lived. Once we were in the compound I was tied to the post by the gate, excess
to the house was gone and was strictly warned not to enter the house or dig the
garden or destroy the plants, why were they all so snobbish all of a sudden ? I
couldn't understand human mentality. Earlier I use to enjoy the rides on the
scooter but now that had stopped, looking at the huge car I wondered when I
would get a ride, but to my disappointment it never came. Food was served by an
unknown woman they called "nanny" who was too busy to even talk to me. All of a
sudden I realized that my Master had become a politician, and of course it was
"corruption" that had brought all the "goodies" and that "evil" that had
shattered this family.

Early morning people started coming towards the house, at first I was worried
that something nasty might have happened to my master or his family but from the
talk I realized they all had come to see my Master, whow !!! so many people to
meet my Master I was enthralled but did not let them in as it was my duty to
announce the arrivals of friends and foes alike "Bouv Bouv Bouv" and looking at
my huge frame they dared not to come in and all of a sudden the "nanny" arrives
and leads me to the back of the house, I was worried who was going to guard the
entrance and continued my "Bouv Bouv" at this point my Master came red faced
shouting obstinacies at me and asking me to shut up and whacked my back side
with a stick he had in his hand, this was the first time somebody had hit me, I
was hurt and then the kids came out cursing me for disturbing them with my loud
bouv bouv the boy even threw a stone at me which luckily missed me, what had
happened to this happy, united family ? I became a

[Goanet] Incidents in Quepem

2008-12-23 Thread JOAO FERNANDES
>From Villagers of Copelabhat,
Amabulim, Quepem-Goa.

That the charges leveled against us (villagers of Copelabhat ) are false,
baseless, concocted and leveled just to harass and the same is being done
at the instance of the mining companies by the Dy-Collector of Quepem and
PI of Quepem who are their agents just to suppress the agitation cropping
up against the illegalities of mining. We the villagers were
discharging/fighting for our constitutional duty/right of protecting the
environment as enshrined under article 51A , art.21 of the constitution of
India.

We were peacefully demonstrating our right as all the authorities failed and
neglected to attend to our complaint dated 7/11/2008, reminder dated
24/11/2008 and non compliance complaint dated 2/11/2008. As the authorities
including the Dy-Collector office failed even to reply to our complaints we
the villagers Copelabhat forced and constrained to come on the road on
27/12/2008 and there after on 17/12/2008 to highlight our grivences. The
Dy-Collector of Quepem Shri Venancio Furtado has time to conduct meeting
pertaining to mining companies and the truck owner ever on Sunday as
conducted on 14/12/2008 but don't have time even to reply to our
complaint/to our problem.

The charges leveled by the Quepem Police under section 307 of IPC against
one of our activist Adv. john Fernandes for allegedly attempting to murder
ASI Arvind Nagekar by using Favda (spade) is false, baseless and concocted
. The Favda(spade ) which the police claimed to have allegedly used by john
was procured by the police from the garden of one Smt. Piedade Rebello.
That john Fernandes being the main leader who is fighting against the
illegalities of mighty mining company to suppress his voice and to
sabotage the agitations in Quepem taluka that are croppingup the false
baseless charges leveled against him. The Falsity can be seen from the reply
filed by the police in Bail application moved in respect of Cr.No.86/08 in
which the police says that John and three others are absconding from the
time of Commission of offence. How can a second Cr. being Cr. No.87/08 at a
later stage about attempting to murder emerge from.

That our authorities are day light liar , they cannot deliver justice to
the common man. That the Dy-Collector of Quepem Shri Venancio Furtado and
P.I. Santosh Dessai replying to a query raised by section of press ( Navhind
Times, Herald, Gomantak Marati) claimed that there were no larthy charge on
the agitators . On the other hand the Collector South Goa Shri G.P.Naik
justifies larthy charge ( Times of India dated 19/12/2008). If the officer
who had supervised the incident claimed that there was no larthy charge, how
can a officer of collector cadre who was not at all present can justify the
act? Which means our Collector also justify the act of Dy-Collector of
Quepem of not replying to any of our complaint or of not attending to the
problem of the villagers ?

It is totally false that the agitators first pelted stones on the police (as
appeared daily Pudari dated 18/2/2008 pg.2 ) forcing the police to larthy
charge. Infact when the Dy-Collector order the police to clear the road most
of the agitators came out of the road and the transport start plying even 10
to 15 truck plied , it is only when we question the Dy-Collector Venancio
about our demand he order larthy charge. The police brutally larthy charged
the agitators even the batten of the police have been broken in which 13
villagers including aged women have been injured (we have collected 4 pieces
of broken batten of the police from the spot of incident).

We question whether there is any administration in Quepem? If there is
administration why they are not attending on the complaint/problem of the
common man, why they are not even bother to reply? Or the mind of the
administrators has been totally corroded with the mining dust and their
hands have been paralyzed with the Carbon Mono Oxide released by the Mining
truck?

We the villagers hereby states that the Dy-Collector of Quepem is most
incompetent to head administration of Quepem and is one of the most corrupt
official. Instead of doing justice to the Am Admi he is acting as a agent of
the rich. We the villagers demand immediate suspension of Dy-Collector of
Quepem Shri Venancio Furtado we futher demand an impartial inquiry into
the entire incident taken place at Ambaulim on 17/12/2008 and punish all the
officers who found guilty of Commission and omission

[Goanet] Mumbai photographer: I wish I'd had a gun, not a camera. Armed police would not fire back

2008-12-23 Thread Venantius Pinto
This is what I "intuited" and avoided asking any questions about; even
before I had read this piece earlier. But now that its finally appeared on
Goanet, I would like to have a small say.

When I was studying at JJ (5 years + I year Bridge Course) I would got off
at this station and know it very well. There is simply no way a someone with
a rifle could not have got one or both of those guys. Taking into
consideration what we knoow so far, including having seeing the footage of
CCTVs -- of our finest cowering and even displaying absolute nonchalance
(Does one have to go through Laban Movement Analysis/ or
Bartenieff Fundamentals to explain this?); it simply means that something
was amiss on many levels. Perhaps a host of things right from training,
inability to shot under fire, no bullets, seeing an AK 47 being fired for
the first time, an etude in P(prostration) major, and although it may sound
heretical -- perhaps a call to stand down for whatever reason, (could this
even possible).

I for one will not be able to utter the words "amchi manshe: for a long
time. I love our guys, although I must add that I have got whacked twice by
these my beloved protectors; once pretty badly early in the morning in
Chembur while doing distance training. (More some other time). In the US
they say there are a few bad apples among various police forces-- it is now
becoming apparent that its the few good ones who protect the brutes among
them. I feel that our guys are not brutes with billas, but not motivated on
account of the thieving politicians and their often pompous superiors. I
dread to think what will happen if tazers are introduced in India, or even
nightsticks and assault batons, or plastic cuffs for that matter. Lord, lets
just forget the heavy boots raining on people's heads.

Its also time people just zipped it, and ask the relevant questions instead
of going around in circles. Ask the same question that Sebastian asked, and
others stemming from it or analogous to it. How can someone walk the streets
of Mumbai and go rat-a-tat. Is this Deepawali? Are we so freaking modern
that we have even run out of batchkis (catapults). Come on people -- those
of you who just keep hammering at pointless stuff -- just wake up. By now we
should be unable to shed any more tears -- the lachrymal glands having
shrivelled up, as that of a woman who has no one left, the system having
taken everything, including all dear and loved ones.

I know that the Central government can give one a portfolio if it so chooses
without one having to go through elections. Can someone propose my name as
Home Minister. Heck give me both portfolios, the Defense one too. Lets start
by reading the riot act to our own people first -- including the wealthy
turds. The article which Hartman posted is an eminent step in that
direction.

I only hope that in the future, Sebastian D'Souza does not get whacked in
some way, as the other Sebastian with the arrows. No one likes to be
embarassed, but I feel we Indians do not deal too well with our incompetence
being pointed out, and get seriouly bent out of shape. Can someone propose
behavioral adjustment programs for all walks of life to Doordhsrsan and make
it mandatory on other channels. Let have some hope here.

The gruesome battleground in South Mumbai has left us Mumbaikars fed up,
scared, angry, willing to lash out, especially at the politicians. We now

[Goanet] Stop - Look/Hear/Feel and Enjoy Life As It Comes

2008-12-23 Thread Roland Francis
Received from a friend. Worth posting.

A Violinist in the Metro

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the
violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for
about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was
calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of
them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle-aged man noticed there was a
musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and
then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman
threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him,
but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he
was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother
tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the
violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to
walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by
several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced
them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and
stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk
their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and
silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there
any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best
musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces
ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a
theater in Boston and the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro
station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social
experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The
outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour:
Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize
the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best
musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many
other things are we missing?

[Goanet] Diverting River Waters.

Rivers belong to nation and not any states.Govt at the centre has

[Goanet] Protection For All

2008-12-23 Thread Selma Albuquerque
Dear Goanet

The two bills
introduced recently in Parliament will, when they become law, give the
Government additional powers to probe terrorism and prosecute suspects. The
question for citizens from minority communities, however, is not so much the
robustness of the laws as the earnestness of the authorities to employ them
non-exclusively. For, it is not that there were no laws in force when Sikhs,
Muslims, and, more recently, Christians were the targets of organized
terrorism, but that there was a lack of zeal on the part of police and
government to apply them. As a result, they were beaten, raped and burnt alive
– sometimes by the police and prominent leaders - in an orgy of terror that
ended only when the energy of the attackers was spent.

What hope then
do we, of the minorities, have that the imminent laws will be used in our
defence? Our founding fathers too made laws and wrote the constitution. We
believed in them and felt secure. No longer. Events in Delhi in 1984, Mumbai in
’92-93, Gujarat in 2002 and Malegaon, Orissa and Karnataka this year make
us wonder what the future has in store for us. Expats, like me, who nurture
the dream of returning to our motherland,
have to think again. We are faced with the irony that we are more protected and
wanted in strange lands than in our own.

Yours truly

There were no religions.Nature was worshipped. Then came the entry

The problem is that it's not even religion. It's communalism.

This is about trying to show each others' religion in poor light, and
how bad someone else's beliefs are. While Goanet has a policy for free
speech, I see a one-point agenda that drowns everything else to be
hardly helpful.

Breaking every law
The mobs came asking blood
O'er the fields we ran
And very few got away
The police stood and watched
While Bajrang Dalis torched
Our houses by the night
And people by the day

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
It's no fun to be a minority
In Orissa today
Jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
All we want is the Sangh Parivar
Would let us live and pray

Not so long ago
We thought we would be fine
But soon these Sanghi goons
Came and stole the shine
The plot was mean and dark
A swamiji was shot
We were blamed for it
And a massacre we got

Oh, jingle bells, jingle bells
Jingle all the way
It's no fun to be a minority
In Orissa today
Jingle bells, jingle bells

All we want is the government
To ensure some fair play

Mumbai photographer: I wish I'd had a gun, not a camera. Armed police
would not fire back

Jerome Taylor talks to the photographer whose picture went around the world

Saturday, 29 November 2008

Sebastian D'Souza

A gunman walks at the Chatrapathi Sivaji Terminal railway station in
Mumbai, India, Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008. Teams of gunmen stormed
luxury hotels, a popular restaurant, hospitals and a crowded train
station in coordinated attacks across India's financial capital,
killing people, taking Westerners hostage and leaving parts of the
city under siege Thursday, police said. A group of suspected Muslim
militants claimed responsibility. AP

* * *

It is the photograph that has dominated the world's front pages,
casting an astonishing light on the fresh-faced killers who brought
terror to the heart of India's most vibrant city. Now it can be
revealed how the astonishing picture came to be taken by a newspaper
photographer who hid inside a train carriage as gunfire erupted all
around him.

Sebastian D'Souza, a picture editor at the Mumbai Mirror, whose
offices are just opposite the city's Chhatrapati Shivaji station,
heard the gunfire erupt and ran towards the terminus. "I ran into the
first carriage of one of the trains on the platform to try and get a
shot but couldn't get a good angle, so I moved to the second carriage
and waited for the gunmen to walk by," he said. "They were shooting
from waist height and fired at anything that moved. I briefly had time
to take a couple of frames using a telephoto lens. I think they saw me
taking photographs but theydidn't seem to care."

The gunmen were terrifyingly professional, making sure at least one of
them was able to fire their rifle while the other reloaded. By the
time he managed to capture the killer on camera, Mr D'Souza had
already seen two gunmen calmly stroll across the station concourse
shooting both civilians and policemen, many of whom, he said, were
armed but did not fire back. "I first saw the gunmen outside the
station," Mr D'Souza said. "With their rucksacks and Western clothes
they looked like backpackers, not terrorists, but they were very
heavily armed and clearly knew how to use their rifles.

"Towards the station entrance, there are a number of bookshops and one
of the bookstore owners was trying to close his shop," he recalled.
"The gunmen opened fire and the shopkeeper fell down."

But what angered Mr D'Souza almost as much were the masses of armed
police hiding in the area who simply refused to shoot back. "There
were armed policemen hiding all around the station but none of them
did anything," he said. "At one point, I ran up to them and told them
to use their weapons. I said, 'Shoot them, they're sitting ducks!' but
they just didn't shoot back."

As the gunmen fired at policemen taking cover across the street, Mr
D'Souza realised a train was pulling into the station unaware of the
horror within. "I couldn't believe it. We rushed to the platform and
told everyone to head towards the back of the station. Those who were
older and couldn't run, we told them to stay put."

The militants returned inside the station and headed towards a rear
exit towards Chowpatty Beach. Mr D'Souza added: "I told some policemen
the gunmen had moved towards the rear of the station but they refused
to follow them. What is the point if having policemen with guns if
they refuse to use them? I only wish I had a gun rather than a
camera."

Its not just the parents who could get their children to do the same, but
anyone with a few rupees to buy some paint and a wild interpretive
imagination. Just give yourself a theme, drop paint, fold the paper, and
press to spread the paint out. Or drop ink, or black tea on a sheet of paper
to create forms. You end up with an image; then see what your mind finds in
it or assigns names to forms it discerns, or even seeks. Take the images to
your favorite bar and analyze the forms over some booze; or with the
motorcycle pilot, ferry operators, kulfi, samosa chat, or atharwalla; or in
the confessional (pass it to Fr. Confessor through the front), and just
perhaps to the janma kundali guy or bhot as the case may be. Hehehehe.

All, have a good remainder of the year. Remember to make changes to sef if
you do make your own blots. Blot out the old, blur in the new -- blots.

[Goanet] The Wise Fools staged in Kuwait

2008-12-23 Thread Goa World

:::The Wise Fools staged in Kuwait:::
-By www.goa-world.com team

Kuwait, December 24, 2008: The Holy Family Choir (H.F.C) celebrated their
Annual Parents' Day with a grand musical - The Wise Fools, an English and
Konkani production directed by its member and Goan star Sylvester Vaz - the
'Hitman of Konkani Stage'. The musical held at the Holy Family Cathedral's
Sacred Heart Hall was free of charge and had many a message for the audience to
take home in an evening filled with fun, laughter, and a high-standard
melodrama apart from various other traditional and cultural programs.

The choir group that has been into existence and singing at the 8:00 am Friday
mass in Kuwait for over 28 years now, once again proved to everyone that they
are vastly talented other than singing devotional songs in the church. Every
member who took to the stage displayed an abundance of talent, friendly
presence and enthusiasm which captured hearts and minds of the audience
bringing applause after every item.

The evening sparked off with an especially composed English and Konkani Opening
chorus which saw the entire choir group on stage led by the dynamic director
Sylvester Vaz himself. The program continued with a variety of songs, dances,
mando - dulpods, puppet-show, etc, etc. Earlier, a dazzling power point
presentation done by Mr. Agnelo & Mrs. Carmen Rodrigues was used to introduce
the choir members and other participants.

:::The Wise Fools:::

The Wise Fools - a comedy skit was the main feature of the event. It is indeed
another feather for Sylvester who has directed many mega plays and musicals
back home in the State of Goa. The members of H.F.C who excelled in the play
were Laurie M, Irene Vaz, Francisco Fernandes, Margaret D'Cruz, Peter Franco,
Mirelle Rodrigues, Vincent Dias, Julian Fernandes, Jeremiah Vaz, Lawrence
Fernandes, etc. All the participants played their parts with great passion and
perfection.

Peter Franco, the main character of the play, gave a superb performance in the
role of a Film Director - so also Julian Fernandes who was very impressive.

Sylvester along with Simon, Olinda & Saluzinho set the ball rolling singing
praises to the Lord in English and Konkani with foot-tapping beats, inviting
the crowd to join them in singing and thus receiving tremendous response..

Child artistes Elrich Miranda and Jeremiah Vaz (son of Sylvester Vaz and Irene
Vaz) amazed the audience with their comedy duo 'Bhikun Martele'. The young
stars were fittingly applauded for an encore. Konkani stage is sure to see some
bright stars in future if the young lads continue with their good work.

:::Tribute to the Church:::

Esparansa Crasto and Gasper Crasto combined to sing a special 'Tribute to the
Church', a song highlighting bishops and priests who have struggled over the
years to strengthen the church. The song was adequately supported with
transition slides in the backdrop.

The couple's other song - a Hindi dance number 'Dil Kya Karen' was one of the
highlights of the evening as the crowd was mesmerized by the powerful vocals
and dancing capabilities of Gasper (who, by the way, was performing on stage
for the very first time, but seemed on par with established professional
artistes). It should be noted that Esparansa is a talented and dedicated member
who has given outstanding performances in almost all of the Holy Family Choir
presentations.

Manddo - dulpod for Goans is a sign of cultural inheritance and traditional
heritage in the field of art and drama. No Goan function or event is complete
without a dulpod. But lack of interest within the new generation towards these
rich, traditional songs, and/or how is it transformed from the original
'Manddo' to an alienated 'Menddo' in recent times was displayed in a comedy
sequence based on a manddo featuring Laurie M, Margaret, Simon - Irene,
Rochelle, Mirelle, Sylvester and Celine. The song received tremendous applause
from the audience for the way it was personated and presented.

Another hit item of the show was the puppet-show presented on a well decorated
setting on the yesteryears' famous song of Mendes Bros "Gheun Nachotam"
featuring Celine, Francisco, Laurie M, Saluzinho, Lawrence F, Olinda, Simon,
and Master Jeremiah.

:::Kuwait - a land of short dreams: A trio to remember:::

It is a proven fact that Kuwait is a land of short dreams for people working
here. Everyone has to return back to their country of origin sooner or later,
for some reason or another. But there are people who futilely think of making
their life a permanent haven here without a vision of the future. While others
thank their stars for being in greener pastures, there are some who show no
gratitude towards people who brought them to this land. Laurie M - Francisco
Fernandes and Lawrence Fernandes rendered a trio based on this subject which
was indeed a revelation. The song had an enlightening theme and lyrics.

  Dears

I think Valmiki Faleiro's Herald Sunday Mirror article series on Goan names
is quite hilarious. But underlying the humour is the
fact that giving a name to a child is a political act. An act whereby the
identity of the child is sought to be defined. Somewhere
after India's independence and around the time of Goa's Liberation one can
find many Goan Catholics were given "Indian" names by
their parents - Valmiki is one, but also Rabindranath, Gandhi, Aurobindo ...
and among girls Sunita, Anita and so on - obviously the
parents were announcing their sympathy to Indian nationalism.

However some of the names that were given were given to children during
Portuguese times were truly millstones around their necks.
Often it was done to honour an ancestor. My brother was named Tertuliano,
after a grandfather, whom someone had named after someone
who was named after some obscure Christian writer. It was a name which my
brother detested and so it was made more tolerable by
shortening it to Tate, But that too became unacceptable after he went to
England where he discovered that there Tate was a surname,
and to be addressed by one's surname as in,"Hello Tate" was demeaning. So he
switched to using his second name Antonio, which he
further shortened to Tony! Now all these name changing shenanigans may create
problems for his child in legal affairs as his
documents bear different names.

Of late there seems to be a trend of creating hybrid names from the names of
the father and mother. But sometimes one wishes that
the parents were a bit careful when they did this - I'm pretty sure it was a
couple named Felicity and Abdon who stupidly decided to
name their child Felon. I hope that a Mervin and a Dion don't decide to name
their child Melon and a Donald and a Cornelia don't
make their son a Con or worse Corny.

Surnames are a bit more difficult to manipulate, but here too politics
enters. A.K Priolkar exploited this in his clever attack
on Goan Christians in 'Who is a Goan?' in Goa Re-Discovered, 1967, when he
suggested that they should abandon the Portuguese
surnames that came to them after conversion, and either revert to their
original pre-conversion names or take up a suitably Goan
Hindu sounding one by adopting the name of the village one happens to reside in
- like Lotlikar, Calangutkar etc - in order that
they appear more nationalised.

Anyway, looking forward to see how Valmiki manages to manoeuvre his way
through the treacherous minefield of names in his future
articles.

  Cheers
  Augusto

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] Chr*stmas Day

2008-12-23 Thread Jude Botelho
21-Dec-2008

Dear Friend,

Once again it’s Christmas time, a time when we celebrate God’s coming into this
world bringing us joy and peace to men of goodwill. But what really is
Christmas? To some it is a time of celebration with fine food, music and gift
giving. To others it is time of carol singing and crib building, and going to
the mid-night mass. Is it merely a recalling of a past event, the first
Christmas? Are we play-acting when we celebrate Christmas? It can be real if
we, like Mary, let God come into our lives. If we let God the outsider come in.
If we recognize Him, coming to us through our brothers and sisters! I want to
wish you a Holy and blessed Christmas! Do enjoy and celebrate God, Emmanuel
with us! -Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: –Christmas Day   ‘Emmanuel, God-with-us’    25-Dec-2008
Readings: Isaiah 9: 1-6;   Titus 2: 11-14;  Luke 2: 1-14;

All the prophets taught that someday God would intervene in history and
liberate His people and give them liberty and happiness. The oracle from Isaiah
contained in the first reading expresses this hope. We know that the fulfilling
of this prophecy took place with the coming of Jesus Christ. The presence of
God brings light and happiness into the world. St. John often contrasts good
and evil as light and darkness. Christ is the light bringing deliverance.
Isaiah compares the liberation from Assyrian captivity as the breaking of the
yoke and the lifting of the burden on their shoulders. Four titles are given to
this child who is to be the ideal king. Wonder- Counsellor – a title reserved
to God alone, Mighty God- nowhere else do we find a king called Mighty-God,
Eternal Father and Prince of Peace. This child will combine the qualities of
great kings and Patriarchs. His coming will usher in peace for all peoples- the
Prince of Peace.

In The Deep Shadow a Light has Shone
High in the Andes, an Indian prince is anointed in the darkness. Then, on a
large raft in the centre of a sacred lake, his naked body is plastered with
gold dust by members of his tribe. They turn away so that they do not look on
his face. They all wait in silence. Then the sun comes over the horizon and
bathes in its light the Indian prince, gold in glory. He plunges into the lake,
and the people cast jewels and sacred objects of gold into the water to
sanctify the place where he swims. He is the legendary Eldorado, the gilded
one. The ceremony is the annual ritual to the god of the sun on behalf of the
people who depend on its power.  The feast of Christmas originated when the
cult of the sun was particularly strong in Rome. The pagan festival was
baptized by the church in Rome which used the same date to celebrate the birth
of Christ. We do not know the date of Jesus’ birth, but we do know why December
25th was chosen as the date to celebrate the
birth. For us the Yule logs and candles symbolize the warmth and light of
another sun: the Son of God. In the darkness of this night we celebrate the
birth of the light of the world.
Denis McBride in ‘Seasons of the Word’

The second reading taken from the letter of Paul to Titus, Paul stresses the
fact that in the incarnation of the Word, the grace of God, the source of
salvation is made manifest. Paul encourages simplicity of life and
single-mindedness of purpose. Our minds and hearts have to be focused on God
and all that comes in between God and us should be avoided or put aside.
Salvation means participation in the life and happiness of God himself. As the
Israelites were expected to be holy as God himself, so we are expected to be as
good as Jesus was good. To be a Christian is to become another Christ, the
incarnate son of God.

The Greatest Discovery
Sir James Simpson had made a number of scientific discoveries including the
anesthetic property of chloroform. He became world famous in 1847. One day,
when Sir James Simpson was old and was lecturing, one of his students asked
him, “Sir, what is your greatest discovery?” The scientist answered, “The
greatest discovery I had ever made was: I am a great sinner and Jesus Christ is
my great Saviour.”
John Rose in ‘John’s Sunday Homilies’

Today’s gospel focuses on the simple and ordinary birth of Jesus born unknown
and unproclaimed in a stable in the little town of Nazareth in Galilee. His
parents were forced to go out of obedience to the emperor, Caesar Augustus, who
imposed his will on the known world – in Bethlehem, a child was born. The
Saviour of the world, the Son of God is born unnoticed by the great, without
any fanfare in a little known town. The time of his coming did not appear
auspicious as no one was prepared for his coming and no one except Mary and
Joseph waited for him. Mary was ready and gave birth to her son and laid him in
the manger. The saviour came in weakness and in need and Mary wrapped him in
swaddling clothes and made him as comfortable as possible in the stable as
there was no room i

[Goanet] Saraswats, looking at their past and present ...

2008-12-23 Thread Goanet News
SARASWATS, LOOKING AT THEIR PAST AND PRESENT ...

PANJIM, Goa: The origins of Goa's most influential caste
grouping, the Saraswats, is enveloped in historical
obscurity, says a new book focussing exclusively on this
community.

"Scholars have put forth a number of theories based on their
study of (the) epics and the Puranas, but these theories are
largely unsubstantiated," says 'The Saraswats', a
just-released book authored by ex-editor Chandrakant Keni.

Evidence has also been largely derived from legends and
folklore, but "rather nebulously", writes the book.
"Prejudiced theories in favour of one's own sect are also
common."

Keni notes that "groups of the community" have sought to
differentiate themselves from "mainstream Saraswats" by
attributing their distinctive identity to theor gepgraphical
location.

He points out that followers of the Chitrapur Mutt "assert
their own identity" by calling themselves Chitrapur Saraswat
Brahmins (CSBs) and refer to the followers of other Saraswat
mutts (religious or monastic institution) .. as Gaud Saraswat
Brahmins (GSBs).

But, he says, Sashtikars, Shenais, Bardezkars and Pednekars
have "done away with mental and practical barriers". Even the
Rajapur Saraswats have returned to acknowledge their GSB
roots, writes Keni.

"Numerous research scholars have produced sufficient evidence
to prove that the community is one, and th enames which have
been associated with each group are related only to the
geographical area of their settlement -- either in the
Gomanta or Aparanta (regions along the western Indian
coast)," writes the former editor of the Rashtramath.

>From where, when and why the members of this community
migrated (to coastal India and Goa) is a subject of divergent
opinion, argues Keni.

The word 'Saraswat' is derived from the River Saraswati,
which sprang from the Himalayas and a number of references to
it can be found in the Rig-Veda, the Mahabharata and the
Smritis.

Yet another theory is that the Saraswats were natives of
Tirhut. A few Portuguese chronicles trace the origins of the
Saraswat to the South.

Keni notes that there are ten 'distinct categories' of
Saraswat Brahmins, who comprise of traders on the eastern and
western seas.

Some are 'pure', some 'impure', and others are 'siddhas' (or,
who do not observe any restrictions.

Keni writes: "At present, small communities of Saraswats also
exist in Rajputana, Sind, Gujarat and Kathiawar. These
communities are likely to have their roots in Kashmir." He
cites theories regarding the Saraswats' migration from
Kashmir, including by Dr James Buchanan.

Of the various Saraswat communities, which are to be found in
the North and the South of India, the Saraswats of Goa and
the west coast alone are known as Gaud Saraswats, says Keni.

His 431-page recently-published book is published by the V M
Salgaocar Foundation of Vasco-da-Gama and priced at Rs 395.

Under subject mentioned as in above, Fr. Ivo C da Souza, on Sat, 12/20/08,
makes a good point saying: There have been cases of conversion "by force" in
the 16th century, but that was never an official policy of the European
missionaries who worked in India. The First Provincial Council of Goa, held
in 1567, forbade the use of force, by decreeing that "it is not lawful to
bring anyone over to our faith and baptism by means of force with threats or
terror, because no one comes to Christ by faith, unless he is drawn by the
heavenly Father with voluntary love and prevenient grace" (Bullarium
Patronatus APP I, p.6).

My query: Fr. Ivo, without contesting to your above points and considering
what you wrote above is correct; please answer my stupid / ignorant
questions:

1) Did Christianity prevailed in Goa much before 1567?
2) In which year Portuguese took over Goa?
3) Is the year you quoted (The First Provincial Council of Goa, held in

4) How Christianity got spread in Goa after Portuguese started ruling

that particular sect of society. Religion did not come from haven it was
introduced by man so that we could live in peace, harmony and in morality, but
unfortunately religion has divided humanity and humanitarian values are
forgotten in the bargain.

Comparatively, by percentage Goa is just second in India as far as Christian
population is concerned, next only to Kerala. I have said this before, and say
it again, I am sure every one will agree with this, "conversions" by force and
fraud are wrong and should not be supported in any way, "if" it is happening.
Did we hear of any conversions by force or fraud in Kerala or Goa ? Both
Kerala and Goa have a very high literacy rate and minimal castes beliefs
compared to the rest of India. Education does play a very important role in
society.

Are any of the guys on this particular thread living in MP, AP or Orissa ? I am
sure not, so it's hearsay and links that we are bickering over, the facts that
transpired there, only the people involved and affected know the bitter truth. I
will only say, let the truth speak for it's self.

Getting back to the reasons, force and fraud condemned, lets take on allurement
or enticement. Lets take a look at the our great politicians that sit in the
Parliament and Vidhan Sabhas and pass laws and rules, before election lots of
favours in cash and kind exchange hands for support, what is it called -
allurement, after election horse trading goes on, what is that called -
allurement, where we work, we keep on changing jobs for better prospects, what
is that called - allurement or enticement. We go to other countries in search of
jobs or a better life, what is it called - allurement. Who on earth does not
want to be better off in life ? That's the universal right of a person. I am not
saying conversions on allurement are being done or not, because I do not know,
neither do you. So if allurement is used hypothetically, what is wrong, if that
is wrong all the above should be wrong and stopped, did we not all see the cash
bundles fiasco in Parliament, the whole world saw it.

As for faith healings, it's each ones beliefs, one will not know it until one
experiences it. I have seen it happen, you may not have, so keep the option
open. I have seen a lot of non Christians get healed and embrace the religion
out of their own free will, people who have not seen it will definitely say
other wise. Lets leave it to each one to decide which faith one wants to change
to after all it's each ones "right".

Why doesn't the VHP, BD, RSS match or out do the Christian missionaries is
public service ? If they do that , then certainly there wouldn't be any
problems. Would there be ? To preach is very easy to put it in practice is
very difficult.

There is another problem that's making the rounds with links, foreign funds.
Most of the charity institutions get foreign funds imperative of religion, the
only problem is how the organization uses those funds, I can assure Dr. Barad
that the IRA is not having a rebirth in India and thank God for that, otherwise
we would have gulped down more than we could chew.

So lets all be sensible and show that we are educated enough to put aside our
religious biases and take a real hard look at what's happening in Goa and fight
in unity for a better Goa for Goans.

Lets all say SAYANORA to this THREAD

I wonder how much the hotels have shelled out to keep them out.

Ferrytale -III *Fairy Tale of Ferries *

Twenty-eight rivers to be crossed in Goa, but only 23 ferries available to
you – an inexplicable shortfall of five. And, did it cross your mind that if
the government takes Mauvin Godinho pitching for one Ravindra Bhavan per
taluka seriously, you will end up with more Ravindra Bhavans than your
much-needed neighbourhood ferry. Consider, as I said last week, this: ferry
Rai – bottom plates require replacement; ferry Divar – bottom plates require
replacement; ferry Diu –bottom/hull is weak and its doublers have been
welded together; and ferry Sanguem – deck plates completely perforated.
Plus, the fact these urgently needed repairs must be scheduled in the next
4-6 months. You are never ever going to get a ferry service that deserves to
be called a ferry service. The logic: your government does not understand
the simple principle behind the supply and demand theory. Mildly put, this
is a logistics problem poor sods like you and me will have to navigate all
alone. To put it entirely in a new perspective, this government seems
determined to juggle around with whatever its existing (on that day) fleet
of ferries is. It does not matter to it how many more ferries get laid up
for repairs.

*Vasco da Gama and his sailors had an easier passage to India *

*Look at the risks you run:*

*Ferries waiting their turn to be repaired at the marine workshop, Betim*

Cumbarjua – Major repairs being carried out.
Quepem – Awaiting major repairs since February 2006. Repairs to be carried
out by third party.
Chandor – Awaiting major repairs since February 2007. Repairs to be carried
out by third party.
Canacona – Awaiting major repairs since October 2007 – Bottom perforated.
Major repairs to be carried out immediately.
Zuari – Awaiting major repairs since August 2008. Bottom perforated. Major
repairs to be carried out immediately.
Harvalem –Awaiting major repairs since August 2008. Bottom plate perforated.
Major repairs to be carried out immediately.
Zorint – Major repairs being carried out since September 2008.
Dudhsagar – Awaiting major repairs since July 2008. Repairs to be carried
out by third party.
Betul – Awaiting major repairs since September 2008. Has weak bottom. Kept
at workshop since October 25, 2008.

The notations on the seaworthiness or delay in even bothering to repair the
ferries are not mine. They are the comments of the River Navigation
Department and speak volumes on how much your *montris* care for you.
Imagine, in the midst of the mother of all recessions, and in the aftermath
of which India's most gung ho SEZ players are themselves acting to get their
mega plans denotified (see Herald Biz December 11), the Goa Industrial
Development Corporation intends to construct an industrial estate at
Carambolim on 2.82 lakh sq mts.

*Not Seaworthy*

That the ferries in Goa are single-bottomed unlike barges and other ships
which have double–bottoms, is a worse concern. In a built-to-specifications
vessel the two steel bottoms encase a series of tanks, because if a barge or
ship springs a major leak, the leakage in the vessel is controlled or
staggered. This is a very basic explanation to how these vessels are
specifically designed for such an eventuality, but says enough for the lay
person. If a ferry springs a major leak, sea water will fill the vessel in a
rush and simply inundate it till it sinks like a stone in water. The panic
passengers will cause as a result, and the unevenly distributed weight of
the vehicles in the ferry will only hasten the sinking of a ferry. This is
the cold as steel reality.

For a State that has easily the worst public transport system in India and
possibly in Asia (only Bangladesh could arguably rival Goa) the river
transport is no better. If you have not had the courage to look at the
rusted bottom and sides of the ferry you use to cross over daily, drum up
the courage and take a hard look at the facts. The harder facts are there is
just no money to be made in building new ferries for you, like there is in
building Ravindra Bhavans, six-lane highways, sports stadia, industrial
estates, SEZs etc etc. The only money that can be made on Goa's rivers; is
in building barges. You will be as stunned as if a Tsunami hit you if I tell
you how many of your *montris *own barges. Don't get too anxious for the
moment about who owns those SUVs that crawl the Mandovi and Zuari taking
away our wealth and gifting it to China, there is time for that. *

[Goanet] Will someone ask Manohar Parrikar what is his stand

2008-12-23 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Albertina,

Perhaps you have not read the Sakal's Gomantak Times this morning. For, if you
did, you could not have missed the smiling face of Shri Manohar Parrikar and
his Bhandari alter-ego, Shripad Naik on a colour facsmile of the audio CD
titled "Khuxal Bhorit Natalam". The songs are jingle bells all the way to the
polling boooth for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections!

If the BJP Goa "State Cultural Cell" is distributing free Christmas carols in
KONKANI [title written in ROMAN SCRIPT on the cover], then Christianity, or at
least Catholicism, is part of the BJP culture. there is no disclaimer like E.&
O.E. on the bills to say "VHP and RSS, excluding". If Christmas carols are good
for Parikar, they are good for Satish Dhond, Subhash Velinkar, Subhash Salkar
and the rest. You can still write to him at manohar.parri...@rediffmail.com
for confirmation. A lawyer may be better than a journalist for such matters. ;-)

Miguel

PS

Did someone not tell you that Shri L. K. Advani commanded the BJP folks in
Orissa to celebrate their bandh elsewhere or on another day. Raping nuns and
killing Christians on Christmas day may freeze all the fund flows from USA that
keep their spunk flowing. It was tough enough to defend Sonal Shah's
connections that popped up when you Googled her name and she is now in
Obama HUSSAIN Barack's cabinet!! I was in Bhubaneshwar those days. The
newspaers changed their tone on the front pages like a Red litmus paper turns
Blue when it touches an Alkali. Money [as in funds] has a strange alchemy.

BJP legislator Mahesh Sahu is reported to have remarked on the floor

Italy, Australia or Kerala to celebrate Christmas.(see news item from
Indian Express of 19th December below). Will someone (ideally journos)
ask Manohar Parrikar what is his stand on what his party colleague in

whether that is the BJP's party line or whether the party is disowning
that MLA and if so what is the party's action against that MLA?

Tension in Kandhamal as Christian leader kidnapped
Bhubaneswar:
The alleged kidnapping may worsen the situation in Kandhamal as it
comes a week before the December 25 Orissa bandh called by Swami
Laxmanananda Saraswati Shraddhanjali Samiti to protest police inaction
in arresting Saraswati's killers.

Though the BJP is yet to take an official stand on whether to support
the bandh or not, the party is readying for a face-off with the BJD
over the bandh. BJP legislator Mahesh Sahu created a flutter in the
Assembly when he remarked that those who felt apprehensive could go to
Italy, Australia or Kerala to celebrate Christmas. Worried over the
bandh call, the Government has deployed 45 companies of the CRPF and
sealed the district borders.

[Goanet] Sri Ganesha: Launch of my photography website

2008-12-23 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Announcing the launch of my new photography
website. The URL is -

http://www.parrikar.com

and the blog is at -

http://www.parrikar.com/blog

Best viewed in Firefox or Safari. I have not tested
for Google Chrome since the Mac version is not yet
available. IE, needless to add, is a pile of rubbish.

At the broadband speeds available in Goa, the site
may take a wee bit longer to load. But once you
have the photos loaded into the cache, viewing
should be a cinch.

The "info" bar at the bottom toggles between ON and
OFF and furnishes captions for each photograph.
The "full" button affords full-screen viewing which
you should take advantage of since the images
have been optimized for larger sizes.

Bookmark these links. In the coming weeks and
months, I shall continue to post a great deal more
on the blog about my extensive shoots in Goa, and
discuss the historical/religious/cultural/archaelogical/
social/scientific - as the case may be - aspects
germane to specific photographs. All peppered
with my xapoter commentary. I expect to have
at least one new entry up every 7-10 days.

Forward the URL to as many Goans as you
can. Every serious photographer aims to draw
his viewer into his locale and recreate a sense
of the place he has captured. But I did not shoot
in Goa as a tourist or as a visiting photographer.
To me, it was an intensely personal mission, in
a place I identify with and understand like no
other. I want every single Goan to look at these
pictures of Goa and imagine what it would
be like to lose it all. And then think of how to
save Goa from our enemies from within and
the enemies from the larger Indian swamp
beyond its borders.

Before I sign off - Feliz Natal !

Warm regards,

r

ps: I will be posting some remarks on the current morbid
state of Goa sometime early next month. In particular,
I want to talk about the rotten NGOs and 'activists' who
are as much, if not more, complicit in Goa's destruction
as our politicos. I may even name names to illustrate
my point. Stay tuned.

Ferrytale - II *Shock and awe*

My investigation of the ferry problem exposed two amazing facts. One I can
understand, the other I can't. Approximately, Rs 9 cr is spent by the
government to run the ferry service every year. That I can understand. If
there is a disruption in service, more often than not, even before the users
(who) are affected, the shop vendors at the entrance to the jetties and the
motorcycle pilots are the first to complain as they have a vested interest –
their business gets affected. On the other hand, it appears that of these
two breeds, the shop vendors would be happier if there was only a skeletal
service running at each jetty – the more the people waiting for a longer
period of time for the boats, the brisker is their business. Not so with the
pilots who'd be on the side of the commuter – a faster throughput for him
would be welcome. Whatever be the facts, this is the real picture: There is
just too much for the tiny fleet of ferries to handle.

Details of major repairs that will have to be scheduled in the next 4-6
months:

Ferry Rai –Bottom plates require replacement.

Ferry Divar –Bottom plates require replacement.

Ferry Diu –Bottom/hull is weak and doublers welded together.

Ferry Sanquem – Deck plates completed perforated.

This is the stark truth and if you think the ferry you use to cross over
daily is any better off than the above listed. Think again. Better still,
check out the gaping holes on the sides of the ferry. Which is why I said
you can start whistling if you think this what-calls-for-drastic action
problem, is never going to be fixed. This government and the minister who
got dumped with the portfolio of River Navigation Department are just not
interested. They are looking at greener pastures like turning Margao into a
whole new arts and culture centre.

While this government makes it so easy to be nailed for its sins of omission
and commission, a disturbing fact is that Divar island (and I presume Chorao
as well) has helped spawn a culture of bribe. For the official Rs 10
Ribandar-Divar fare, the ticketless tariff is Rs 5 and for the official Rs 7
Old Goa-Divar fare, the ticketless travels costs Rs 5. I see the logic
(though I do not myself indulge) in paying Rs 5 instead of Rs 10, but for
crying out loud, why pay Rs 5 for Rs 7. The downside is the ferry staff go
overboard (metaphorically speaking) to accommodate the many, many trucks and
buses that cross daily, because there's really big money to be made. In fact
between squeezing in the trucks and two-wheelers who despite the fact they
were allowed to travel free (a dole out before the last elections) by the
MLA and former Navigation Department minister Pandurang Madkaikar and think
the ferries were specially built for them, crossing across from Divar has
come to be a major irritant if you own a car.

I like to echo Frederick's comment.  I am tired of hearing about religion and
related subjects on this forum unless it is directly related to Goa and Goans.
Religion is a personal matter close to each one's heart.  Can we just leave it
there ?  If some folks want to discuss religion and related topics, perhaps
they can create a separate forum to verbally bash each other, and spare the
rest of us the bandwith.
