Psephology and the election connection

Of geniuses and left leaders gone berserk with strange
alignments

By Mario Cabral e Sa

Welcome to Goa Shri. M. K. Sharma, whoever you are. Welcome
to the land of Abbé Faria the discoverer of scientific
hypnotism. Stay here for a while at any of the luxury hotels
in Cavelossim as a guest of your protégé Churchill Alemao.
He has the clout to get you a complimentary VVIP suite with
all the goodies thrown in. And maybe you will get the hang of
what hypnotism is about. It is a science, not just a cheap
trick which you tried to play and failed the other day at
Churchill-bab's 4000-strong meeting in Margao.

Sharma-ji, the Congress ticket had been given long before you
set yourself on the mission of fooling the South Goa voters
assuring them, in your capacity as political adviser to
Madam Sonia-ji, that Valanka-baby stood an excellent chance
of getting the Hand symbol.

Right now, Sharma-ji Churchill-bab, is in dire straits. If
you remember Mickky Pacheco, the enfant terrible of Goan
politics had filed a disqualification petition against
Churchill Alemao and Reginaldo Lourenço on the ground that
their mother party Save Goa Front had not been legally merged
and no longer continued to exist.

Mickky Pacheco's disqualification petition is before Speaker
Pratapsing Rane who has proved, time and again, that he knows
the rules even better than some Supreme Court judges.

The Election Commission's decision on the dicey issue of
SGF's existence is clear as daylight. Neither was the alleged
merger of SGF in INC legally formalised nor is SGF's status
clear. If the reader remembers, two SGF members Anton Gaoncar
and Raul Pereira claimed that they were the leaders of what
of SGF still remained. Pereira had claimed that Gauncar's
membership stood terminated while Gauncar was sure that as
the vice president of SGF at the time of Churchill's exit
(Churchill was then the president) he was the legal heir to
the top post.

The EC's decision negates Pereira's claim but has demanded to
know from Gauncar why the party should not forfeit its
recognition as a state party.

Churchill has claimed that daughter Valanka has an
invitation from Mayawati for a ticket from her
party. If she accepts it, why not? The more the
merrier is the flavour of the ongoing election
  campaign.

Some drop by the wayside, like Sanjay Dutt, some have
rebelled against their mother-party, and there is Varun
Gandhi whose future remains unsure. He has been slapped with
charges under NSA, which, on the face of it, the young brat
invited upon himself. He has said that he is proud of the
Gandhi name he wears, clearly hinting that he is his father's
son. That is an uncontestable truth except that father Sanjay
committed unspeakable excesses to consolidate himself as the
Congress supremo ready to take on mother Indira Gandhi's
mantle. At the time, Maneka, his mother was just 18 and her
immaturity showed in Surya, the scandal magazine she edited
and eventually sold to the BJP.

Babu Jagjivam Ram, who had run foul of her 'saas' was one of
her targets. Sting operations were then not the fashion, but
Jagjivam's son was a moron who loved to get himself
photographed while frolicking with his girlfriend. Maneka got
hold of a set of photos and splashed them in her Surya. It
was, Maneka later claimed, a scoop. But, the truth be said,
the magazine sold very well. She was a faithful acolyte of
her boisterous and tyrannical husband.

She has matured since. Didn't you see her on your telly,
palloo covering her head, modesty personified, warning the
Samajvadi and INC parties that they would be solely
responsible if anything happens to the boy, who, she
indignantly says, is being lynched by the media for the
contents of a doctored CD of his vitriolic attack on the
Muslims.

But let us get back to Elections09, the great reality show
now on TV channels, all of them, national and state, English
and vernacular: pre-poll projections and prospects.

Not that I go by the pre-poll predictions by TV channels,
print media, and experts. They have nothing to lose,
certainly not their reputation because, election after
election, they end up explaining away their wrong predictions
with what they call marginal last minute swings.

India's first highly rated psephologist was our
gaunvbao Eric P. W. da Costa who was a brilliant
alumni of the London School of Economy and whose
advice on economic matters was at times availed of

YES !!! Its a shame to the Goans for doing that. But I don't really want to
blame
them because poverty is still hovering over the houses of most Goans. And the
political leaders know that and they take advantage of that.
Yes goans are not thinking about the future.
They have to be reminded that if now the leaders can buy their votes then why
not
sell Goa to the foreigners.
Goa is a piece of land which has departed from foreign land and Goans are
foreigners; I say this because we
see more foreigners and less Goans in Goa.It reminds me of the portuguese
times. It
looks like Goa has not yet achieved independence. I hope God in some way
blesses Goa
thinking that it is the same heaven He had created for men at first.

The Accidental Activist - It's a Dogs Life

By Venita Coelho

For the last three days my life has gone to the dogs. Literally. It started
with the
skinny white mongrel who hung around the lane. Someone hit her with a bike and
she
began to limp pathetically. Mum and I looked at each other and sighed. We
tempted
her with food, loaded her into the jeep and took her off to the GSPCA. The vet
there
suggested we also spay her and asked if we had more stray dogs in the area.
They
were willing to sterilize them all for free. The only caveat was that we would
have
to catch the dogs ourselves.

For some time now we had watched with alarm the rapidly growing population of
strays
in our vaddo. One particular corner was the haunt of several. I often fed them
the
food my dogs wasted. When I neglected to do so for some time, they would lie
down in
front of my jeep when I rounded the corner and refuse to let me go until I
distributed biscuits and dog love. But from two dogs that particular gang had
grown
to an assortment of about ten dogs of all shapes and sizes. The night before I
spotted one of them with a huge wound on her neck that looked very maggoty. A
neighbour told me that someone had tried to chop her with a koito. People's
patience
with them was wearing thin. But killing strays doesn't reduce the population.
The
female dogs have an inbuilt system that makes them deliver larger litters when
the
population for that area dips. The only sure solution is sterilization so that
the
next generation never appears.

I enlisted Mum as my able lieutenant and we made a plan of action. We fed the
dogs
over a couple of nights. I whistled madly to call them so that they would
associate
the whistle with food. Then one night I whistled, gathered the gang and went
forth
like the Pied Piper, holding their food over my head. They followed - straight
into
an empty house. I put the food down, nipped out and locked the door. I had
already
warned neighbours they were in for a noisy night, but everyone was so relieved
to
hear that something was being done about the strays that they offered full
support.
A cacophony of miserable howls rent the night air as we drove off.

Next morning I discovered that all but two of my prisoners had squeezed through
a
gap and vanished. I hunted high. I hunted low. I tramped through fields and
yelled
myself hoarse. Then it struck me that another neighbour had been feeding them
lately. I appealed to her and she gamely pulled out pots and pans and clanged
them
together. In seconds there were four eager noses at her gate. They included the
white dog with the awful wound. Gotcha!

The van arrived but I took one look at the wire noose that the handler was
carrying
and hastily said that I'd get them into the van myself. Wheedling and coaxing
in
dulcet tones, I hefted the dogs one by one and staggered to the van. Not one of
them
even attempted to snap. One little brown fellow repeatedly licked my nose as I
put
him in prison.

While we carried out Operation K9, bikers passing by stopped to take the GSPCA
number and neighbours shouted encouragement. Only one particularly small and
mangy
specimen eluded capture. I was determined to get him, but the little fellow had
a
whole lot of chase in him. He ran for his life, with me in perspiring pursuit.
I
splattered through the cow shed and galloped through the fields. I thundered
through
the garden, diving around bushes. When I finally got my hands on the little
fellow
he yelped as if he was being scalped. As soon as he realised I was not going to
harm
him he covered my tee shirt with mud and my face with smelly slobbering licks.
I
stuck him in the van and wiped my dripping face. Eight dogs. Not a bad haul. I
put
my head into the van to check all were well.

The sight that met my eyes restored my faith in the intrinsic harmlessness of
strays. I had just grabbed these dogs, picked them up and shoved them into a
cage.
But I was greeted with waving tails and happy barks. Everyone had recovered
their
spirits and they looked like a happy family all set to go on a picnic. Off they
went. They will be back in four days, treated for all illnesses, injected for
rabies
and sterilized. And all of this is for free. The GSPCA does not charge for
strays.
You can make a donation if you like.

If you want to do something about the population of strays in your area you can
call
the GSPCA at 2416180 . Go on. Join the KBA - the Kutta Bachao Abhiyaan.

PEOPLES' MANIFESTO FOR POLITICIANS
NT - 6 April, 2009

Agencies/Lucknow- Fed up with manifestos of various political parties
ignoring regional issues, the people of drought-hit Bundelkhand region have
prepared their own election manifesto and are pressing candidates in the
fray to follow it up if they want their support.

We have prepared a 'peoples' manifesto' after meeting over 6000 persons
spread in five assembly seats - Hamirpur, Raath, Tindwari, Mahoba and
Charkhari and are pressing candidates of different political parties to
follow it. The manifesto has been prepared after analyzing the need of the
people of the region the convener of the public campaign, Mr. DP Gupta
said.

This manifesto is compilation of what people said during the survey
conducted by us in January -February. And those who read it are welcoming
the move and even voters here want this to be followed by political parties
he said.

About the demands in the manifesto, Mr. Gupta said that due to droughts the
region was backward and needed proper drinking water and irrigational
facilities besides free education for all girls and boys up to class 12,
setting up of a medical, engineering colleges and a university in the
district.
As a result, issues which really concern the people are overlooked. Like
areas covered under Hamirpur constituency are not covered by railway network
even after 60 years of independence. It is a big issue for the local people,
but it does not figure in the manifesto of the political parties, he said.

Similarly, they have demanded that employment opportunities be provided to
the people of the area so as to check large-scale migration. Political
parties cannot force their own manifestos on voters now. We elect our
representative and they should take care of our demands and follow our
manifesto, Mr Harish Kumar, a local resident of Hamirpur, who was involved
in the process of preparing the manifesto, said. The manifesto is being
circulated among the candidates in a bid to pressurize them to incorporate
local issues in their agenda.

COMMENTS

The Goa Su-Raj Party set out in the year 2000 to compile 'Peoples'
Manifesto' for entire GOA as against each of the 40 Constituencies, in the
understanding that GOA cannot be developed as according to the whims and
fancies of the elected representatives or the people of the Constituencies,
since GOA has to be looked at as the integral part of the wholesome planning
process.

This manifesto was released on August 20, 2005 on the auspicious occasion of
the celebration of the World Goa Day across the world in the form of a
booklet called The Road Map For Goa. The party has found no more need to
prepare spot manifestoes at every election time since this exercise is seen
as 'wanting' and a way to fool the people all the time with selective
pre-planned agendas which lead nowhere.

GOA has to take the cue from these UP people, more so when this party did
attempt to make the people of GOA aware that the peoples' manifesto was
needed to be developed as according to the wants and needs of the people of
GOA through 'CITIZENS' [OF GOA] INITIATIVE'. However, this attempt has
received no response at all from any quarters, especially from the the
various NGOs who are seen in the forefront of fighting injustices galore.

In view of the party's permanent manifesto -- THE ROAD MAP FOR GOA - we at
goasuraj believe that nothing more needs to be done in terms of conserving
energy and time as this peoples' manifesto is the monumental work of
dedicated and committed GOANS which is ready to be put on the track right
away, by not bothering to worry if there will be takers, by fielding their
own candidates who will support the manfesto in a fool-proof manner without
diverging to accommodate other selfish agendas once elected. This exercise
is vital for SAVING GOA during the next Assembly Elections slated for
2012, but which could be declared anytime from now, and which elections, by
all manner of imagination, could the the last local Assembly Elections
offering GOANS the 'God Sent' opportunity to SAVE their GOA and its
IDENTITY. Good humouredly, Goans need not feel 'COLD SHIVERS' running down
their SPINES at the thought of what their GOA is going to become after
Elections 2012, when they can take the corrective measures right away -
NOW.

Surely, the good people of GOA do not intend MISSING THE BUS?

[Goanet] Urgently Need To Revamp Our Education System

2009-04-07 Thread Freddy Fernandes

Remembering Aquino Braganca (b. 6 April 1924), who fought for freedom
of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa. An online tribute
 http://aquinobraganca.wordpress.com/ (includes many historical

Urgently Need To Revamp Our Education System

Latest report shows that, out of the 1121 schools in Goa 949 schools function
without a Headmaster or a Head-Teacher, that makes it 84.66%, It's shameful and
disgraceful to Goa, which boasts of a very high percent of literacy, compared to
other states in India. Can our 8th pass elite Education Minister please explain
this peculiar phenomena ? It's more like traveling on a bus without a driver
heading down the slope with only the TC and cleaners to help and support the
unfortunate passengers. How can schools function without a Head Master ? Who is
there to see the progress of the students and control the teachers ? Why
shouldn't our Assembly run without a CM then ? Why do we need any ministers as
well ? Are we really serious about our education policies ? Or does our esteemed
Education Minister think that every one should be like him ?

Education is the most important step towards development and it should be the
priority of every Government, to provide quality education to young evolving
Goa. Does our Education Minister really want to impart quality education or does
he want, evolving Goa to follow in his footsteps ? He does surely have enormous
talent and aptitude for deception and fakery. Education and discipline go hand
in hand, education without discipline is arrogance and discipline without
education is ignorance, so how can schools be run without a headmaster is beyond
comprehension.

Have any of the bigwigs in the education ministry visited the hundreds of
government schools in the villages and seen what's going on there ? A lot of
people have complained that teachers come and go, as and when they like,
sometimes students are seen playing out side their class rooms, most of the day
while their teachers gossip or are busy talking on their mobiles. Have these
teachers been trained or the unfortunate students left at the mercy of people
who have paid the ministers to get Government jobs. There are a lot of people
whose only objective is to get a government job, they are neither qualified nor
interested in teaching. The state of most of these schools is worse than the
government hospitals, how can the students acquire knowledge in such an adverse
ambience ?

It is not enough for the officials to say that people are against development,
what we Goans want is development in it's basic necessities and priority is
quality education, good health care, regular uninterrupted water and power
supply and an infrastructure that will match the needs of it's populace, along
with organised garbage disposal system and a good sewerage system, these are the
basic needs of Goa and Goans. If we neglect the basic requirements especially
in education how can we develop ? These damned MLA's and ministers have just
one agenda on their minds - Make as much make money as possible and give a damn
about the basic needs of the people, this is what Goan politics is all about.

We have already been crowned as one of most corrupt state in India by of our
politicians and with the present situation in our schools and our education
policy, we could well loose the credibility of being one of the most literate
state in India as well. Our education system and our education policies do
seriously need a revamp

I pray to the Education Minister, please don't let there be a possibility that
our children become like you. Amen

Dear Sir,

This is with reference to todays' article in the Herald mentioning that a
new group called 'Friends of BJP' has been formed to provide an alternative
to the people. Who are these people trying to fool. Where were they all
these years and never once took up social issues or is it that all the
rascals who dont want to openly support the BJP are going to hide behind
this new formation like cowards.

The electorate hopefully has come of age and with majority of the voters
being youth this time lets hope that sense will prevail and people cast
their votes for a secular government. BJP is desperately trying to break the
unity amongst secular parties and will go to any extent to see that they get
elected. Now they have tried a new stunt by forming this new outfit so as to
woo the undecided voters and cowards . Lets not forget the evil that took
over the country in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition. Inflammatory
speeches by Advani and others led to the death of thousands of innocent
people during these riots and the subsequent Bomb Blasts. Lets not forget
the infamous Rath Yatras of Advani which left riots and destruction in their
wake wherever the rath yatras passed. Even places which had never witnessed
riots and people of different communities had lived peacefully were
disturbed by his inflammatory speeches. Lets not forget his hurtful and
insensitive comments after the death squads were unleashed by his Sangh
Parivar on the innocent Christians in Kandhmal ( Orissa) . If Karnataka
which was once a very peaceful state has suddenly changed overnight into a
troubled state ( with reports of attacks on minorities the most recent being
in Bellary and Haveri ) with the coming of BJP it wont take this country
very long for it to turn into a communal hotbed . There are already stray
incidents of attacks coming in everyday. The Sangh Parivar outfits are
waiting to unleash their evil designs and will be empowered if BJP takes

GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)

THE PRODIGAL SON, THE FATTED CALF AND THE HOLY BULL

Apr 4th, 2009 |
BY RAJAN NARAYAN

The choice in the Lok Sabha elections in the south is between the Holy Bull -
Narendra Sawaikar of the BJP, the fatted calf Francisco Sardinha and the
prodigal
son Matanhy Saldanha. The prodigal son, if he is truly penitent, appears to be
the
best choice.

THE COUNTDOWN for the elections to the two Lok Sabha seats in Goa has begun
with the
main contenders filing their nominations. The choice before the electorate in
South
Goa appears to be between the Holy Bull, the Fatted Calf and the Prodigal Son.
The
situation in North Goa is even more farcical with the main rival to the
three-time
incumbent BJP Member of Parliament, Shripad Naik being the main facilitator of
the
Mopa airport, Jitendra Deshprabhu - one of the few so far loyal Congressmen who
has
joined the NCP to contest the North Goa parliamentary seat as the joint
candidate of
the Congress-NCP alliance. The losers in the bargain are the people of Goa who
have
been deprived of the choice of an honest, earnest and conscientious politician
like
Nirmala Sawant, who was apparently the favoured choice of the NCP High Command
for
the North Goa parliamentary seat.

HOLY BULL

THE BJP has always been symbolised by the Holy Bull, not because of the
reverence it
has professed for the cow as Gomata, but also because of its hypocritically
sanctimonious claims to be the upholder of Hindutva. The BJP Holy Bull has a
long
history of seeking to polarise voters along communal lines with its bullshit of
being upholders of the interests of the majority Hindu community, starting with
the
demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya to the genocide engaged in by
Narendra
Modi's mindless goons in Gujarat, in the wake of the Godhra tragedy to the
latest
inflammatory speeches by its newest hate symbol, Varun Gandhi, son of the
notorious
Sanjay Gandhi of emergency nasbandi infamy.

It will be recalled that Sanjay Gandhi, when he was de facto prime minister of
the
country during the emergency, launched a forcible family planning campaign,
which
came to be referred to as nasbandi. If one needed any reminder of the genocide
against the Muslim minority community launched by Narendra Modi and company, it
came
with the arrest of the Women and Child Welfare minister in his cabinet, Maya
Kodnani, who has belatedly been charged with leading a mob which was allegedly
responsible for the death of over a hundred Muslims. Closer home we have seen
the
lunatic, fanatic face of Hindutva in the molestation of young women in a lounge
bar
in Mangalore by the Ram Sene, which is headed by Pramod Muthalik, a veteran of
the
Vishwa Hindu Parishad - one of the key frontal organisations of the BJP.

FATTED CALF

ONE wishes one could recommend the Congress candidates for the two Lok Sabha
seats
in Goa, which will be going to the polls on May 23, 2009. Unfortunately, the
Congress candidate for South Goa, Francisco Sardinha, has not done anything
noteworthy during his tenure as Member of Parliament. He did not even live up
to his
promise of moving an amendment to the bill relating to cruelty to animals to
exempt
Goa's traditional bull fights from the purview of the bill. Never mind that the
Members of Parliament from Tamil Nadu managed to persuade not only the central
government, but even the Supreme Court that the equally dangerous and cruel
sport
involving bulls in Tamil Nadu, which is part of the Pongal festival, should be
partly exempted from the ban on cruelty to animals.

Francisco Sardinha, during his brief inglorious tenure as chief minister of
Goa, not
only sold Goa for the proverbial forty pieces of silver but allegedly favoured
devious industrialists and those wanting to set up offshore casinos, allegedly
by
pandering to his lust. There are no two questions about the fact that the
Gambling
Act was amended during the tenure of Francisco Sardinha as chief minister to
issue a
licence to Sunder Advani of Ramada to start an offshore casino where live
gaming
would be permitted, unlike in the then onshore casinos which were allowed to
only
put up slot machines. This does not exclude the possibility that Sardinha acted
under pressure from the BJP in the state and the Centre because the saffron
brigade
headed by Manohar Parrikar was his alliance partner in the government.

INDEED Sardinha's greatest sin was to give legitimacy to the fundamentalist

Todya, 07/04/2009 I saw a police tow truck driven by a driver in Khaki
uniform wearing 3 stripes on his shoulder but without a seat belt on NH 17
near Green Park Hotel at approx 12.45 p.m. This was followed by a traffic
policeman in uniform but without a helmet.

And the police expect the common man to keep the law?

Your log books will tell you who the culprits are.

Can we expect some exemplary action?

Kiteak go baye bestench furrr zata?

I only meant to say that Kunnbis still exist in Curtorim but
under different code, I mean diffrent dress code.

So also, Nuvem, Cansaulim cuelim, Quelosim etc

Buluz, vistid also reminds me of Kamizol

At school, it was a fashion.
And if Kamizol is slightly visible then they used to tease each
other saying 'Sunday is bigger than Monday'

Others school facts
- In our class, (high school) the sitting arrangment was one boy one
girl per bench.
- Average passing age was 20, I passed my matrik at 18 (Now av.15)
- Many boys in STD V onwards seen comming clean shaven
- Most high school students wearing all clothing essentials of an
adult including undergarments. One sided (m), hanging garden (f) etc
were some of the terms used for teasing.

Other facts:
When grown up girls/ women came in for Sunday Mass with saree or
vistid but with 'katolo Mangam buluz' (Sleeveless blouse ?) the
Pe. Vigar used to mention it in his Xermao and suggested to wear or
cover the part with 'Kelli Panam' (banan leaf), I guess he had a point there.

I wonder how it would feel if the same is worn now for Church or
Azad Maidan Gospel Programe/prayers where one has to raise his or
her both hands while saying ' Allelia Haleluia'
The crowd at Azad Maidan, obviously, would be more than the church.

Ok, coming back to Kunnbi or sudras, it reminds me of an old song
which goes like this (Kunnbi song-duo)

MUGE NODATU RAVON Konsu (Not sure about this line/words)

TUGE MOGAN KADDYA DISU

AMI SUDRAM BAXEN NACHOTAI TUYISU (we dance twist like sudras)

ICHOI OKOL MUGELI KONSU (Konsu is shorten for Coinsao or Concessao)

Not quite sure what this statement implies, were Bamons in Curtorim
 not wearing vistid and maxy?

And why hiding behind sudra dress? Don't Kunbis have the right to dress
up as they please. Was not vistid a Western dress which the Bamons
were first to hide behind?

Maybe we should also arrest Kunbis for wearing vistid and maxy
alongwith our Russian tourists.

Sheesh! What is this the dress police in Goa.

Isn't it wonderful how all our caste and communal bigotry is coming out

5% TAX ON FOREIGN INCOME FOR NRI STARTING 2009 -10

Government of India today announced imposition of a flat 5% tax on all
NRIs over their world-wide income. Income that is already taxed in India
has been kept out of the purview to avoid double taxation. No double
taxation benefits would be available for this 5% tax, meaning even if
you are paying tax on your income in a country with which India has
double taxation agreement, the benefit would not be allowed against this
5% tax.

All those Indians who are holding Indian Passports and have been out of
the country for more than 180 days during the year are under this
requirement. Income proof would have to be submitted in form of employer
certificates, foreign tax filings etc.

Indian government is also coordinating with Australia, Europe, America,
UAE and other countries on collecting Income data for its citizens as
part of data sharing initiative on terror prevention measures.

This has been hailed as bringing in compulsory participation in
development of India from Non resident Indians. This means NRIs can no
more just continue to retain their Indian citizenship without paying
taxes in India.

Though it may not be favorable in view of the NRIs who already bring
substantial forex in form of remittances and Investments. This is bound
to cause a lot of heart burn for the Indian community residing outside.

This is expected to generate ~10 Billion INR tax collection for the
government in the year 2009-10.. For more information on this rule, tax
filings and forms visit http://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/

Correct me if I am wrong but it looks like there is only one country in the
world today that has a 90% tax on the bonuses paid to workers. That country,
hold your breath, is the good ol' United Socialist States of America.

Abso-funny-lutely amazing!

Mario observes:

Imagine how misled this forum would be like with posts like the one above
without any voice of reason, truth and peace to provide corrections, context
and perspective?

The good news is that such misguided posts provide a teaching opportunity as to
how the American system of checks and balances works, especially the co-equal
power sharing that the US Constitution provides between the Executive,
Legislature and the Judiciary. Very few people outside the USA understand this
process.

The politically motivated proposal to levy a 90% income tax on the small number
of bonuses above a certain amount paid only by the small number of companies
that received more than a certain base amount of bailout funds is currently
wending its way through the American Legislative process.

The House of Representatives has hastily passed one version of the bill,
apparently to placate public outrage. Now the Senate has to pass its version
if it can get at least 60 Senators to agree. If they cannot get at least 60
Senators to vote in the affirmative, the bill dies and does not become law. If
the Senate does pass a version of the bill, then representatives of the House
and Senate meet to arrive at a compromise with the House version. Then the
compromise version goes to President Obama and his teleprompter for his
signature.

Psephology and the election connection

Of geniuses and left leaders gone berserk with strange
alignments

By Mario Cabral e Sa
mariocabra...@yahoo.co.in

 Hi,

Some people on Goanet will always be 'hypocrites' and hide under some non
logical nonsense. It seems to be a 'trait' developing under a feeling of
'inferiority complex' with some persons. They know who I mean!
See you Roland! I will be coming to Canada and soon, again this year, I have
 two weddings etc.

 Cheers!

Nascy,

Pls don't minf my sticklerishness, but doese'nt non logical nonsense violate
the

principle of two negatives achieving something or the other?

Hopefully, I am confused beyond my ken; it is past m'night..

I too will never vote Sardinha but sadly I have no Election Card
which means I have no voting rights in Goa (and I am sure 95% of
those reading this don’t have theirs either).

Lucky are those in Goa with cards including this one

There is nothing more pitiful that watching two animals being
pitted against each other, who are then goaded on to gore each
other to death. While the rest of the world is marching forwarding,
we Goans are bent on marching backwards.

Rest assured Mr Sardinha, I shall never vote for you. This is a
disgrace to use hapless bulls as a political platform for yourself.
And mind you, incase the world is not aware of it, this is not the
sport of a matador pitted against the bull, where the bull has a
fighting chance. No Goan, in his kasti, would have the courage to
stand infront of a charging bull. No, this sport of Shasti cowards
who take pleasure not in the game itself but in the betting process
 that it entails.

Shame on us Goans and since this a Shasti Catholic Goan fetish, shame,
and shame on us Shastikars. A pox on our houses.

[Goanet] KKL: At barber shop

2009-04-07 Thread JoeGoaUk

KKL: At barber shop

KKL = Kaisey kaisey Log (or Kes Keso Lok)

This is about a strange but noteworthy behaviour or act of a person that you
may have come across in your real life.

If you have any such incidences then you may come back here under KKL or write
it to me and I will post it anonymously.

KKL: At the Barber Shop
Other day I went for my tri-weekly visit to the barber shop.

My visit usually last minimum of 1.15 hour up to Max. 2hrs.

No. I don’t go there for gossiping or for free Air Condition.

I go there for my usual Hx4 services i.e. Hair Cut, Hair dye, Hair wash Head
massage.

So, now you know why it takes at least one hour.

Why I said up to 2 hrs? that’s to include waiting time for my turn (if any).

While a barber guy working on my head, another customer (a middle
aged man) just come and took the chair next to mine saying ‘hair cut’. The
young barber starting working on head by praying water (this
they normally do to moisten the hair).

The barber guy then ask the man ‘Kaisey kattna hai’ (how he wants his
hair cut)

The man with serious face almost started shouting on him saying ‘who
told you to spray my hair and bla bla bla’. Almost frightened barber
boy quickly took out the hair dryer from the drawer, plugged it in
and started drying his hair. The boy they asked him how he wants his
hair cut? The angry looking man said ‘take off almost half of it
(shorten by half). Through out 20 minutes time the man with no smile
on his face as if he is very hard hearted person. I tried to avoid
looking at his face by how could I?

His face/reflection appearing in the same mirror in front of us.

After the end of the hair cut, the boy show his back side
(up to the neck) in a separate mirror. No, he is still not happy
and did not utter a word.

The man then got up and asked ‘how much?’ The boy said Rs.25

The man gave Rs.50 and the boy returned Rs.25

The man gave him Rs.10 as tips.

I said to myself ‘What? Did he really do that?’

Yes, the boy got 10 (tipping is very rarely done at barber shops in Goa)

I was not only surprised to see the man tipping Rs.10 but his act
also made me feel belittled as I always give 10 for Hx4 services.

So what we learnt from the man’s act
NEVER JUDGE THE BOOK BY ITS COVER

Now, some of you may wish to know how much my tri-weekly Hx4
services cost and what it includes?

- Hair Cut

- Hair dye, wait for 30 minutes (Reading bollywood magazines or Newspapers)

- Hair wash with hot/cold water with shampoo. Wipe

- Head massage with Coconut oil or other oils of your choice
(usually 3 types), it also includes little bit of massage on
your forearms, neck, your back, forehead, eye lashes, Rose water
drops in your eyes and final grooming

All these cost just Rs.150* and that’s includes Rs.10 as tips.

*140 assuming you use Indian dye such as Godrej etc, imported dye
brand can cost upto to 100 more. I used Godrej not because it is
cheaper but I am hyper-sensitive to others

Other facts:

- I first did my complete dye when I am just 24

- I first remember seeing my own grey hair when I was just 17

- I used to use my Dad’s left over solution to darken my frontal hair when I
was 22

- Strange but true, I never dye my mustache because it has not turned grey yet.

- I now see may college students in their 20’s with partial grey hair

- There was a young bank officer (around 32) in Canara bank with complete grey
hair (never dyed)

- At my work place in UK, there was a man in his 50’s with not a
single grey hair and he had two grown up girls aged around 18

A couple of days ago I read a repot in the media about how the Calungute
Village is going to have a seven metre road built from Baga to Sinquerin as
the traditional road running through the coastal villages is narrow. The
question the people of Calungute should be asking, Is Calungute a village
...?
Calungute is a good example of no planning or bad planning. Take your pick.
The residents should have limited the growth of the number of buildings,
guest houses and so on, so there would be no problem of sustainability.
Today the so-called Calungute Village is really a town, a model for the way
no village in Goa should go! The residents, no doubt, of Calungute will
continue to refer to where they live as their village for years and years to
come ... Cheers!

[Goanet] Cycling carries a message, with a new network in Goa (Arti Das)

2009-04-07 Thread Goanet News

Remembering Aquino Braganca (b. 6 April 1924), who fought for freedom
of the former Portuguese colonies in Africa. An online tribute
 http://aquinobraganca.wordpress.com/ (includes many historical
 references, some photographs and documents)

Cycling carries a message, with a new network in Goa

In this fast paced world; sometimes it becomes very
important to just slow down and look around. And
possibly the best way to achieve this, is by
cycling, says Arti Das [arat...@rediffmail.com] of
the GOMANTAK TIMES who just explored a whole new world.

I must confess here, that my first love is cycling. I learnt
to do this in my childhood days and always felt, that it gave
me a sense of freedom.

But, with the passage of time, this love took a backseat,
only to be re-born when I heard about the Goa Cycle Club.
Just one month-old, this club initiated by enthusiastic
Joseph Rodrigues, is trying hard to make people aware, that
cycling is synonymous with fitness.

I am more of an amateur cyclist but I feel it is the best
way to remain fit, says Joseph, who is also a professional
Karate instructor. His main aim through this club, is to make
people aware, that cycling can be feasible in today's times
also.

Through this club our three main aims are-to give
knowledge of fitness through cycling, reduce the
harmful emission, by using this eco-friendly mode
of transport and also prevent the ongoing
congestion on the road, explains Joseph.

Taking his piece of advice and ready to be reunited with my
love, I joined the first cycle trek that was conducted last
Sunday on April 5.

Cycling all the way The cycle trek began with nine cycling
enthusiasts (including myself), from the Miramar circle. We
were a mix, consisting of two students, young professionals,
Anil Pereira, the owner of Champs showroom in Panjim and the
Director of Institute Camoes, Dr Delfim Correia da Silva.

It was a wonderful ride that initiated from Miramar and went
up to the NIO circle in Dona Paula, bypassing the newly done
up roads in Taliegao, steep slope and the University road.

This cycling-cum-chatting experience was a great way to get
closer to the surroundings, giving a sense of bonding with
nature. Like Dr Delfim states, Cycling has a lot of
advantages-it keeps the body fit, opens one's mind, its good
for the environment and the best thing is that you discover
so many things, which you otherwise would ignore.

To support this statement, he gave away an example.
When I was riding on this University road, I saw
on a signboard, instructions that were written in
English, Konkani, Hindi and even Portuguese,
signifying a more than 40-year-old signboard.

Whereas Dr Luis Dias from Panjim, who is quite committed
about environment issues, believes that this concept of
cycling should grow, and proper awareness should be created.

Joesph believes, that this event in the future will
kick-start wakefulness about cycling as a fitness regime, and
also give way to thinking green.

We want to conduct at least one such event every month and
also associate it with some other adventure activities like
trekking, concludes Joseph.

Interested people can join the 'Goa Cycle Club' on
the social networking website-Facebook. It is free
to join, provided you know to cycle. For cycle
treks, arrangements of hiring a cycle can be made.

JoeGoaUk, my though below in no way casts any aspersions on you.

+
Any ideas as to why certain things titillated /titillate our people. I am
not concerned about non-Goans here. Did these (a)musings emanate from the
upper classes, who in a sense were alluding that others had not correctly,
or elegantly absorbed ways they had imbibed well. Later were they absorbed
by all others.

What is it in such matters that titillate our people? Are we simply easily
amused? Has this been going on as far as one can remember—I mean those who
have lived longer, and in Goan, among Goans as opposed to those like me who
did not grow up in Goa, nor lived among Goans.

board a cruise liner.

The atmosphere was charged. It was either music or chit
chattering that one could hear. Old friends reunited.
Affectionate embraces and greetings were exchanged.

Conversations began with, 'Ciao, come stai?' (Hi, how are
you?) and ventured to English, Konkani and even Portuguese.

The festa begins

Time of the day: dusk. The venue: Mandovi River on board
Noah's Ark. The occasion: the second anniversary of the
Circolo Italiano. The people: of the vivacious sort. Onboard
the ark, the second edition of the annual magazine, 'Rivista
Annuale' was being released by Angela Trezza, the Director of
the Italian Institute of Culture, New Delhi.

Emanuela Carponi, the director of the Circolo and an Italian
professor at the Goa University just finished presenting her
welcome speech with many of her students in the audience.

The Circolo was born as a natural desire of the
students who once completed the Italian course and
wished to remain in touch with the Italian language
and culture. Without having to study grammar or
appear for examinations, the group still has the
pleasure of meeting one another and exchanging
ideas, grins Emanuela While everything appeared
rather relaxed and informal that eventful Tuesday
  evening.

Circolo Italiano functions as a registered body throughout
the year with committed members, meeting up every other
Friday to brush up on their Italian.

And assorted ways they find to do this. We watch Italian
movies and have Italian cookery classes when we need a break
from the routine, says Tanya Mascarenhas, secretary.

While physically on board Noah's Ark, the members of the
Circolo were taking everyone on a cultural journey to many a
province in Italy from the historically rich Rome to Florence
boasting of art, and Venice synonymous with gondolas.

Cross country ties

The Italian songs made Soprano Singer, Leopoldina Figueiredo
from Margao, nostalgic. This atmosphere of Italian
togetherness brings back memories of my years spent in Rome.
I enjoyed the peace and calmness too, she says, referring to
the Mandovi River.

Leopoldina wasn't the only one who travelled a
great distance for the anniversary. A lover of the
Italian language, Dr Prahalad made a trip from
Bangalore, especially for the occasion. So many
people learn Italian and then forget it easily.

Ave Cleto Afonso, President of the Circolo, and a former
scribe, believes that his involvement in the group enriches
him and his culture, as a Goan. This is not a group for
foreigners, nor are we trying to escape from our roots. It is
more like a cultural bridge.

And members have their own reasons for interacting with the
group. The seventy plus couple, Ema and Bernardino de Sousa
from Panjim, with their never-say-die attitude, take pleasure
in learning something new and meeting new people. As age
grows on us, many of our contemporaries are not circulating,
remaining indoors. We love to socialise and decided to do
something to improve ourselves, says an affable Ema.

Taking it up as a challenge, the couple signed up for the
Italian course at the University in 2006 and completed the
basic as well as the advanced course, passing all the exams.

To be able to learn the language directly from an Italian, is
fantastic, there's nothing like it, expresses Ema who also
speaks Portuguese and French fluently.

What did it feel like answering exams all over again? My
wife was very nervous. I on the other hand was relaxed. The
best way to learn the language is to write letters to your
boyfriend in Italian, humours Bernadino.

Dr Mohan Sangodkar, Registrar of Goa University couldn't have
been more right when he said, Each country has t's own
culture and richness and here, exchanging all these things,
especially with the younger generations is very important.
The earth is being threatened by terrorism and it is moments
like these that are to be treasured.
