[Goanet] Ponda murder accused confesses to killing third woman

Help others be better informed CONSUMERS. --- --- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre (GDRC) Email: goad...@bsnl.in --- Ponda murder accused confesses to 3rd killing --- Mahanand Ramnath Naik confessed on Sunday to having murdered a third woman at Khandepar in 1995. He had earlier admitted to having killed two other women, one each from Shiroda and Ponda, for their money. Ponda DySP, Serafin Dias informed that according to Mahanand’s confession, he had taken Vasanti Anant Gaude, 19, from Vadalwada Madkaim in his rickshaw on September 11, 1995 to Khandepar and killed her by strangulating her with her own dupatta. He also confessed to having thrown the body into the Opa river. PI C L Patil said that Mahanand first took Vasanti to a plantation behind the water treatment plant at Opa, but not finding a suitable place to kill her, decided to go elsewhere. He then too Vasanti to a plantation near Khandepar bridge at about 12 noon. After eating biscuits and sipping soft drinks, Mahanand snatched Vasanti’s dupatta and strangulated her. He then removed her gold chain and Rs 500 from her purse and threw the dead body into river Opa, police said quoting the accused. The PI said that after killing the women Mahanand sold their jewellery. Vasanti’s gold chain was sold the same day to a goldsmith in Ponda and the accused joined other rickshaw drivers at about 2 pm and remained at the stand till 6 pm before going home as usual, PI Patil said. Mahanand used the same modus operandi all three times and the police are searching their records for unsolved cases of missing women to determine if Mahanand may have killed any more women. Police had arrested Mahanand on April 21. -- Times of India (Goa) 04/5/09 page 1 -- -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK -- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa -- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: goa...@bsnl.in --

Re: Scandal at Goa University - Bare Facts from Agostinho Proena
There is however the 'angle' that the entire sexual harrassment has been enacted and pushed forward to save the ragging culprits. And it is possible that the alleged accused in the sexual harrassment case is a victim of the internal politics of the University as well as the dirty politics of political parties. I fail to understand why Manohar Parrikar had to be involved in the first place in the affairs of the University. Were there no other 'non-political' personages in Goa who could be approached to look into this matter?? I have filed an RTI application asking for the relevant details of the 'sexual' as well as 'ragging' encounters, as I happen to know Prof. Aureliano Fernandes very well and I will want this entire thing to be thoroughly investigated, impartially, at the highest level, without any political influence whatsoever and the culprits brought to book irrespective whether it is Aureliano Fernandes, the ragging masters and mistresses and the sexual live bombs parading in the University as students. I have also written to the Prof. S Thorat, Chairman, University Grant Commission (U G C), with copies to the Justices of the Supreme Court as well as the Ministry of HRD, New Delhi to request for a thorough impartial and unbiased high level investigation in the matter. floriano lobo Moira 9890470896

[Goanet] A visit to Asilo de Majorda (Azilant, alberint or Home for the aged)
A visit to Asilo de Majorda (Azilant, alberint or Home for the aged) It was not a planned visit. I just remember it as we were passing that way. (Also because I knew one lady who has been recently admitted there). Last time I Visited Alber was around late 1980’s. Majorda is very famous for it’s Alber(i). This (Alber) must has come from Portuguese word. Perhaps, alberque? Often, we or tiatrist say ‘ Maim alberint asa or alberint vetam’ which is same as ‘Azilant asa or Azilant vetam’ I am sure ‘Azil’ has come from ‘Asilo’ which is again a Portuguese word meaning ‘Asylum’ There was a bust stop near the Majorda Asilo, and when the bus is about to reach there the conductor or the Klindder (Cleaner) of the bus used to shout ‘Alberikode Alberikode, konn deunta, konn deunta’ eaning ‘we are arriving near the Asilo stop, any one alighting? Majorda Calata, is also famous for its St. Roque Chapel which is on the main road close to asilo. And very close to that chapel, I remember many parents with their new born babies used to visit a house (a quack doctor?) commonly known as ‘bhurgeamghe noll moddpacho dotor’ I still don’t know what’s ‘Noll’ or what’s it’s English equivalent or whether this doctor or practice still exist. Ok, coming back to Alber or Azil. The large old Portuguese house (see pic) seems to have donated to Govt or the authorities to run it as an old aged home. This alber must be there long before 1961. It has large rooms with a small famiily chapel/altar (see epic). Inmates: Presently there are about 26 women (this asilo is for women only). They (most) love to see visitors, they love to talk to the visitors. Please visit the one or some near you at least once in your life time. Who know? We could end up there too. Remember AMFT? (Aiz Maka Faleam Tuka). There are about 9 government run Asilos (home for the aged. I got this from the net) Viz. Chimbel, Panaji, Mapusa, Candolim, Margao, Majorda, Loutolim, Chinchinim Cuncolim.. I asked one lady ‘ Koxi asa, tumger kitlim bhurgim?’ How are you, how many sons/daughters you have?. She replied promptly ' amgher konn nam’ none. But later on I was told she has more than 2 but she don’t want to talk about them. A lady has 3 sons and 3 married daughters. All well settled. One son in Gulf, another has his own business and the third works in Goa. Again, two of her grand sons (only sons) are young tarvotti (working on cruise ship). This lady is a mother of 8 (2 died). Yet, there was another lady who joined on her own, It seems, she came straight from her home after her only son (married) slapped her on her face. There was a large room with at least 11 beds/inmates (dormitory type). Besides, these govt. run asilos, I am sure there are at least a dozen more rune by church/nuns and other charity organizations. One Such I notice at Navelim when I was roaming in the feast fare last year. Also, there is one at Benaulim run by nuns. Please come back if you know any others with addresses (if known). Also, it would be nice if any body come back on this: - What’s alber or how we got it ? - Any info on the Majorda Asilo house, its age, owners etc There was a name/marble plaque at the entrance which I only notice in the pic Majorda Asilo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk18/3502400493/sizes/l/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk18/3502401555/sizes/l/ altar/chapel http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk18/3502399621/sizes/l/ joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa & NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

[Goanet] Goa Labour Minister takes to the street on hospital workers issues at Cuncolim.
- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help others be better informed CONSUMERS. --- --- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre (GDRC) Email: goad...@bsnl.in --- NUSI-WOCKHARDT LABOUR ISSUE Indefinite agitation begins, protestors demand reinstatement of employees. Threaten to get Occupancy Certificate of hospital revoked --- Amidst unprecedented security, employees of NUSI hospital and residents of Cuncolim on Sunday began an indefinite agitation outside the hospital premises demanding reinstatement of the 24 employees within continuity of service. While the protestors vowed not to allow any new patients in the hospital till the striking workers are reinstated, the huge police force led by Superintendent of Police, Allan De Sa ensured the road leading to the hospital was kept open for traffic. A visibly agitated Labour Minister and Cuncolim MLA, Joaquim Alemao later warned that he would not remain a silent spectator if the protestors are harmed by the police, while Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Filon Vaz assured the people that he would call an emergency meeting of the Council to revoke the Occupancy Certificate issued to the NUSI-Wockhardt hospital. The people have also resolved to call on the management of Sociedade Agricola dos Gauncares to revoke and cancel the land lease with the NUSI hospital. The indefinite agitation began at 9 am when Union leader Raju Mangueshkar, while addressing the workers, thundered that no hospital can be run continuously with police around and termed it as a moral victory for the striking employees. “How many days and months would the management take police protection to run the hospital”, he wondered. Leader of the striking workers Union Oscar Martins said the people of Cuncolim will not allow any new patients in the hospital and warned the management and the police force not to play with Cuncolkars. “The land belongs to Cuncolim. We will not allow any patients inside till the demands are fulfilled”, he said, while making an appeal to the people not to refer any patients in the hospital. Addressing the people, Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Filon Vaz said the city Fathers will solidly remain with the people and disclosed plans to call an emergency meeting to discuss the issue of revocation of Occupancy Certificate issued to the hospital. “The Council had issued the Occupancy Certificate based on political pressure. The hospital have not complied with our conditions”, he rued. Terming the NUSI-Wockhardt management as stubborn, Labour Minister Joaquim Alemao warned that the people will not allow Wockhardt to run the hospital. “For how many days will they run the hospital with police protection”, he sought to know and reminded the police and government that Cuncolim is a land of freedom fighters where the people will go to any extent to fight injustice. Asserting there will be no compromise on the 24 workers, Alemao said he would lead the employees to the Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat after his return from the USA next. An agitated worker Manush Rege threatened to self immolate with his children if the management fails to reinstate the workers. “I am ready to die near the gate with my children. For the last two months, we have been starving”, he said. The 24 employees have refused to join the new Wockhardt management on probation after putting in years of service in the NUSI hospital. They have demanded their reinstating in the new management with continuity of service, which has been refused by Wockhardt management. The area infront of the hospital was virtually converted into a fortress with the police mobilising a huge force to tackle any law and order situation. Armed IRB platoons were deployed around the area and DySP Shamba Sawant was seen personally ensuring that no one assembled close to the gate or the road leading to the hospital. Dear Joe, Can I suggest Japanese gardens in Vasco behind the military camp. You can seat in the gardens and admire all the flowers and trees. Also it has beautiful views across the sea. Then if you get tired of sitting down on the lawns you can walk down the cliffs to the beach. In addition there are various gaddos (food vendors) who can ply you with bhaji pooris, batata vaddas and other victuals. [Goanet] Fw: Picketing the Revolution: 'Their' Revolution,
- Original Message - From: "goasuraj" To: "Livia/Jorge de Abreu Noronha" Sent: Sunday, May 03, 2009 5:49 PM Subject: Fw: [Goanet] Picketing the Revolution: 'Their' Revolution, Dear Livia and Jorge, Frankly speaking, To tell you the fact, This is what I said after hitting the bottom of your post My Gawd. 'Livia et Jorge has done me a great honour'. Thank you Livia et Jorge for the kind words. This is actually a shot in the arm for people who are consistently trying to call the bluff of hypocrites like Karmali and others who pride in calling themselves Goa's Freedom fighters only to keep on collecting their pensions to the detriment of us, the tax-payers. I don't want to go over it again, but Jose Francisco Martins of Salvador Do Mundo has burnt the history books proudly preserved by these fake freedom fighters just before he died. (And mind you, I was there to put a handful of mud over his coffin) And I am the sole witness to that scene when with tears rolling down his cheeks, he told me that he would do everything in his power, if he could, to reverse the freedom fight and bring the Portuguese back to Goa. He admited that working against the Portuguese was a cardinal sin that he has committed. His patriotism is not lessened by these sentiments but goes a long way to say how frustrated he was with the 'trash' that replaced the Portuguese. I too have been anti Portuguese since I was a kid, in that I have always been patriotic towards my nation. And that nation of mine has always been not India but GOA. Please see the following information provided by the American Cancer Society: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_4_4x_How_Is_Hodgkin_Disease_Treated.asp?sitearea= Here is the relevant quote: "In recent years, many advances have been made in treating Hodgkin disease. Most newly-diagnosed patients can be cured with chemotherapy and radiation therapy." Please do not trust any of the material pertaining to medical science and health in the post appended below. It is completely bogus. Most people today do not die from cancer. The five-year survival for cancer today is 66% in the U.S. The death rates for most common cancers such as breast, lung, stomach, prostate, blood, lymphoid tissue, colon and rectum, uterus, etc., have declined sharply over the last couple of decades from their peaks in the 70's and 80's when Dr. Borges was treating cancer patients. Date: Sun, 3 May 2009 07:26:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Gilbert Lawrence Yet, solitary / anecdotal cases of success OR failure is not science or scientific. Unfortunately, individuals (despite their acclaimed principles) use what ever they can for their own advantage and to make their own point. Is the scientist selling hope with your case report. In medicine we call that a "snake oil salesman" which is euphemism for homeopathy. To me it looks like on Goanet, the scientist is selling hype and the padre is selling salvation.:=)) Mario observes: As the lone voice of reason, truth and peace on Goanet, I am forced once again to point out that Dr. Gilbert is being disingenuous and demagoguing a discussion, even distorting it, for no apparent reason other than some deep seated desire to embarrass himself. While Jane Gillian's report was anecdotal, anyone who read her post with an open mind would have known that it was a direct response and counterpoint to Padre Ivo's bogus contention that cancer is not curable. We now have three personal anecdotes so far, from Jane, Viviana and myself, and additional information from Santosh that many cancers are curable, obviously if caught before they have metastisized. http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-April/177110.html http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-May/177240.html Thus, it is absurd to suggest that anyone was using this serious discussion for any advantage, and the post I am responding to is pure, unadulterated poppycock, unless Dr. Gilbert can provide evidence that the information Santosh has provided is wrong.

[Goanet] An Expatriate Goan's Personal Recollections of the Catholic Church in Colonial Kenya
Religion, it is said, is the process of entering into personal communication with God - a matter of deep faith so to speak; and we, Goans, true to our Patron Saint, St. Francis Xavier, have carried our faith to the far corners of the globe, and so, it was not unusual that Goans should take an active interest and involve themselves in all matters relating to the church. Of us, like the Poles, it could be said, Goans, semper fidelis(always true to the Church). While Goan Catholics are among the best known of Kenya's Asian communities, what is less well known is that their association with Kenya predates the colonial era; and yet, very little has been documented of that early history in Kenya especially during the Portuguese presence. Commercial though the Portuguese exploitation of the Indian ocean and colonisation of Goa was, religious proselytizing served as a moral and convenient justification for imperial expansion, and the serious missionary work which began in Goa - firstly by the Dominicans(followed latterly by the Franciscans, Augustinians, Carmelites and Jesuits), resulted in our conversion to Roman Catholicism. Thus began the inter-twining of two major branches of the Indo-European cultures. Catholic Goans are therefore often referred to as "European Indians", and Goa itself, as "Rome of the East, It is a well known fact that Goans have made a significant contribution towards the establishment of Catholicism in Kenya. They have been amongst the founders, and latterly, pillars of the church - as in the case of the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Mombasa(where, incidentally, my own parents were married in 1926), the Holy Family Basilica, Consolata Church and St. Paul's chapel in Nairobi. Whenever newly-arrived European missionaries set foot on Kenya soil, it was the Goans they turned to for moral and other financial support. Many of the churches in the smaller towns of Kenya also owe their existence to the collective efforts of Goans. In 1933, the Goans built their own church in one of Nairobi's suburbs, Parklands, and named it appropriately after their Patron, St. Francis Xavier. Nor did the Goan contribution end there; they were co-founders of various Church organisations like the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Legion of Mary, Catholic Action groups etc. Because of their ingrained love of music and aptitude for singing, the Goans were quick to start choirs, many of which graced the cathedrals and churches of Kenya. The Goans were equally generous when the question of Catholic education was raised, and donated freely towards the establishment of schools in Nairobi and elsewhere. All this, despite the discrimination practised in Catholic establishments, where many Catholic schools, siding with the Colonial government of the day, did not admit non-European Catholics to their schools. The same was true of mission-run hospitals. Sadly, it must be recorded, that while the missionaries made good use of the Goans - a matter of convenience almost, the treatment that some of these Catholic Goans received at the hands of some priests and nuns was, to say the least, deplorable. Racial discrimination was rife in schools and hospitals(mission hospitals at that!), where White non-Catholics were freely admitted while Goan catholics were left in the lurch. Many Goans who did not speak English, but who were devout and staunch Catholics, were openly discriminated against even in churches, where benches, especially at Christmastime, were reserved for Europeans(in many cases, such Europeans being 'once-a-year-churchgoers'). Mothers were often humiliated by the priest asking them to take their crying infants out of the Church, while no White mother was discriminated in this way. I realize that all this will make sad reading but feel that the story needs to be recorded if only to complete the whole picture of missionary activity in colonial Kenya. I may add that I have many friends among the missionaries in Kenya - both White, Brown and Black - Bishops, priests and ordinary folk. On various occasions I have discussed this issue with them and found that they were in agreement with many of the issues raised in this article. Mervyn Maciel

[Goanet] Goa Nite 2009 (Singapore)
Dear Roland, Allow me to stipulate two points: (a) UK based Eddie Fernandes has been doing a superb job for about a decade at least. (b) There are NO high achieving Goans here (as far as I know) Now: Are you saying that Canadian Goans have decided to rely ONLY on Eddie Fernandes to do the needful (good) for them, while they individually are quite happy to publicly wash dirty linen with (sour) grape juice? Is it not the case that acknowledgment/recognition of the good Goans do, is best done in Canada and in the Canadian media? How many Canadians read the Goan Voice UK (or Goan Voice Canada)? How many (in your estimation) of the Young Goans, have read the Goan Voice's account of the '2008 convention', and how many, read the negative stories that were put out by (what I consider) the disgruntled lot - some of who did not even help the organisers but were there to criticise? Was that good guidance and encouragement for the young Goans of Canada? good wishes jc 2009/5/3 Roland Francis If you cut down on the time spent on Xapotam and use that to read Goan Voice UK, you will find that Eddiebab Fernandes does a great job of profiling and highlighting the achievements of Goans living in Canada and their contributions to the Goan community in particular and to Canadian society in general. Actually he does a great job not only on Canadian Goans but on Goans everywhere. Wonder why you are missing out on that. Has he omitted profiling high achieving Goans in the Bahamas.

[Goanet] Rock - Monday-muse (4 May’09)
MONDAY MUSE (4 May 2009) ROCK For many years, a farmer had ploughed around a large rock in his field. He would curse the rock, every time he damaged his plough on it. Though he tried to be better at avoiding the rock, he managed to break yet another plough, one day. Remembering all the trouble the rock had caused him through the years, he finally decided to do something about it. When he put the crowbar under the rock, he was surprised to discover that it was only about six inches thick and that he could break it up easily with a sledgehammer. As he was carting the pieces away he also carried the smile of realisation how easy it would have been to get rid of that rock sooner… if he had only tried! We know of how the stream defeats the rock with its persistence… how the drop hollows the rock with constant falling... how the stone cutter with determined chiselling gives shape to huge rocks. But, perseverance would never happen if one did not choose to try. And the reality is that most rocks in our route may not be as big or as tough as we imagine them to be. But we would only know when we try! Most of the time, the hurdles in our path seem larger just because we dread the bigger obstacles. But, those who are seized by the passion, to overcome every obstacle, find that not all rocks in their course are overwhelming. Somebody who shirks from preliminary effort would find the simplest of tasks to seem overpowering. It is said well that “never give up until you try”… The rock in our way may not be what it appears Let’s BE BETTER at overcoming failure fears… - Pravin K. Sabnis 4 May 2009, Goa, India. [Goanet] The Indian Church, the Censors and the film Angels and Demons
This note below was sent to me by my old friend and colleague from New Delhi, John Dayal. I am sure this will soon be a hot topic of discussion on Goanet, and trust that John's writing will be a strong platform on which to build this. Hartman _ NOTE TO THE FILM CENSOR BOARD Mrs Sharmila Tagore, the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, called for a review screening of the controversial film Angels and Demons, a sort of a sequel to Da Vinci Code, at the Films Division Auditorium, Mahadev Road, New Delhi. Apart from the review committee of the Board which included two men members – the Congress leader Tom Vaddakkan and the public relations guru Dilip Cherian. Ms Tagore also invited representatives of the Catholic Bishops conference and me. CBCI officials who attended the special screening included the Official Spokesmen, Fr Babu Joseph, svd, the executive secretary of the CBCI media commission Fr George Plathottam, sdb , Delhi Media Commission director Fr John Paul Herman svd, the Principal of St Columba School, New Delhi and two others. The film has the usual Hollywood colour shooting in locales such as Rome and ceremonies of pomp, but its cinematic merits fail it entirely, with the work seldom rising above the level of a mediocre and dreary action thriller riding just on the notoriety of Da Vinci Code. The Vatican has condemned the film for its undercurrent of malignant attitude to the church, but has not called for a ban. The CBCI had earlier apparently called for a ban, but did not insist on it at the screening while condemning the film for showing the Catholic Church, the Vatican and the Papacy, particularly election of a new Pope, in a bad light. The Censor board made it clear they were in no mood to ban the film which will soon have a global premier. It was also hinted that commercial issues are involved if films are banned. It was let known that the film may erase out some offensive words, but the film will be released with a disclaimer at the beginning saying it is a work of fiction with no relatishiop to reality. I gave a written note to the Secretary to the Chairperson in my capacity as a Member of the National Integration Council, a former President of the All India Catholic Union, and the current secretary general of the All India Christian Council. In my note I made the following points: - The Censor Board is a statutory body and should have the courage of its own convictions. It has its guidelines and its duty, and if it thinks a film, any film, disparages a religious community or hurts religious feelings, it should take action under its code - The Censor Board should not pass the buck and the responsibility even in an advisory capacity, to organisations such as the CBCI, to take the infinitive. It puts CBCI and religious organisations in an awkward spot – they are made to appear as moral police and library burners if they call for bans or restrictions, or weaklings if they do not protest. - The Church is not a censor or a moral police, but is indeed a part of the civil society system which makes for a nation’s conscience. The Board must consult it on larger issues of civilisation and moral codes in entertainment, science and depiction of communities as stereotypes, which the Board never does. - When communities are mocked, pilloried or disparaged, it is not merely third reputation that is harmed, but cinematic images carry into real life and communities particularly priest and nuns etc, are made targets of physical violence. Stereotypes also harm the community’s image. - In this film, it is so dreary that it will die a natural death and should be allowed to do so with the rider that it is a work of fiction. Bu in principle I am against all bans on works even of fact or fiction within constitutional limits. Let such films be rejected by the audience and not because the Church says so. - The Censor board must ask itself a question -- How will it react if the focus is not on the Christian Church but on religious heads of other faiths. Will it show the same “gentleness”? This is for your information and use God bless John Dayal Background note: The Central Board of Film Certification (popularly known as Censor Board) is the regulatory body and censorship board of India. It reviews film, television ads, and promotional material. Film censorship becomes necessary because a film motivates thought and action and assures a high degree of attention and retention as compared to the printed word. The combination of act and speech, sight and sound in semi darkness of the theatre with elimination of all distracting ideas will have a strong impact on the minds of the viewers and can affect emotions, courts have held. In 2006, seven states (Nagaland, Punjab, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh) banned the release or exhibi
Re: [Goanet] Talking Photos: Oh Princess! See what you have done
Thanks Joe - So the dead Princess still "graces" the Candolim shores. How may years is it now - 9 ? And no one in Govt has the guts to get it removed! What are so-called the "freedom fighters" doing in this respect? Breaking more "foreign" street name plaques and changing names of towns, when they cannot take care of the mess their own have created? And the name of that shack - "bathe and binge"? Do they want more drownings in their part of town? Yeah, I know I'll get a lot of flak and be called certain names for what I have said. But I have said what I have said because I have, for long, been disgusted with this "freedom without responsiibility".
