The latter circumstance is exceptional because a legally and ethically valid informed consent is obtained from all participants of a study. - Ok, folks. This exact same debate is going on, on Tanzanet at the moment. One writer makes the same point as Santosh, but in a way that the non-scientific mind would find easier to understand. What the writer says, essentially, is that whether it is Western medicine or traditional, the medicine-man has to collect information. What may work for one patient, may not work for another. The bottom line being that the giant western multi-nationals have paid people to be guinea-pigs while researching the drug and its effects. [Goanet] Goanet] Serial Killer: 12+2 is the latest tally!
Hi all, somebody on Goanet wrote the 'Police are not even fit to be cooks.' Being cooks is a profession, and a decent one. A police office has his duty towards his country and his nation? Are they doing their jobs? If a police officer is currupt, he should not be given the job in the police department. He is not fit for such a title. Same with the politicians, they have a responsibility towards their country and themselves to do it properly, and not be lazy and careless. How can one's country prosper with false thinking? Roland's comparison of Busybee (Behram Contractor) to Jerry Seinfield is not apt. Busybee was a reporter/columinist and later editor of Mid-Day and then of his own Afternoon Courier and Dispatch. While Jerry was or perhaps still is a stand-up comic and a TV star. Some of Busybee's close friends and admirers have compared the late columnist to Art Buchwald, the great American humourist whose column was syndicated in many American and worldwide newspapers. I miss both Art and Busybee's columns. Some journalists in Mumbai even said that if Busybee was in America he would have given Art a run for his money. I not hundred per cent sure, but I have a feeling that Busybee has said somewhere he was inspired by Art Buchwald. The column, Only in Bharat, was compiled from funny news items from across India. To the best of my knowledge it was not written by a columnist. I think Reuters still run a item with funny stories from across the world. Eugene

Re: [Goanet] Time to put sense into Goan women
Samir, While it lasts, considering divorce anathema is not such a bad thing. Look at the example of western countries where the divorce rate is very high. Children from the marriage pay a very high price for a broken home. Of course the general wisdom is that children are much more understanding than they are given credit for - meaning that they would rather their parents separate than have constant unpleasantness in the home. But this argument I think is a defence used by the proponents of divorce. Whether you like it or not, on balance, children are more adversely affected by the separation of their parents than not. What is the price they pay? Emotional instability Susceptibility to mental dysfunctions More likelihood of drug addictions Higher chances of divorce in their own adult lives Little regard for relatives or family. In addition to this, as divorce becomes more acceptable, the reasons for this extreme step become flimsier. A little marital argument becomes grounds for throwing the towel in. I am not a fan of remaining in the marriage at any cost. There are some good reasons for divorce. Violence, exploitation, incompatibility, constant disrespect, are some of these. All I am saying is that unfettering traditional ties that still have relevance in today's world, should be considered after thinking not once ot twice but ten, twenty or a hundred times. And that too only after counselling and professional advice. My opinions are merely from observing a lifetime of situations and a little reading. Perhaps sociologists on Goanet will have something more formal to say. Date: Thu, 28 May 2009 21:13:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com I have no idea what the first part of the above question means. Any properly scientifically tested and validated medicine approved for ethical use, by definition, has to be more effective than a placebo, irrespective whether it is expensive or inexpensive. Alternative rituals that have not been tested for safety and efficacy in randomized placebo-controlled trials are by the same token of questionable utility. Mario adds: I continue to be amazed by the misconceptions being persistently proposed by some registered medical practitioners, who should know better. Even I know that placebos, by definition, have no pathways that any knowledgeable medical practitioner can use or know what to do with in treating a patient. This would be like giving them a bottle of colored water and asking them to take one tablespoon three times a day - the color only meant to make the beverage seem like a medicine. Now, if the beverage were feni, then we may have something useful:-)) The real question is why ...Ayurveda, homeopathy, alternative medicines, nutraceuticals etc. cannot be tested in head-to-head blind studies against placebos just like every allopathic medication has to go through before being approved for widespread use by the competent authorities. After all, most of these have been around long enough. The prescribing physician knows within a narrow range the probability of effectiveness of an allopathic medication and this information comes from the studies. They also know the possible side effects and how the medication may conflict with or be enhanced by other medications the patient may be taking. I suspect the reason is that the sellers and manufacturers and proponents of alternative treatments cannot afford to put these to objective testing because we may find out that they are useless, which would put millions of snake oil salesmen and women out of business. Many allopathic medications, too, fail such tests and no one will ever hear of those in the marketplace. On the other hand, the occasional alternative treatment does pass muster when tested. I know Santosh will correct me if I'm wrong but I once heard of an extensive study in Britain which found that chiropractic performed better than orthopedics in treating back pain due to spinal problems. In the meantime the gullible who are fooled into believing that these alternative concoctions or procedures work pay the price and take their chances with what is essentially gambling with their health.

Folks, Most of you are aware that the master debater of the Republican party, that intellectual, George W. Bush, is here in Toronto to debate Billy Bop Clinton tonight. The born again Christian is likely to shed light on how he tried to convince French President J. Chirac to join the war coalition insisting that, This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins. Billy Bop Clinton is probably here to collect speakers fees which would easily top $200,000.00. Not bad for one nights work. What neither President is going to address is the old US saying of, What's good for GM is good for the country. General Motors, once the worlds largest car manufacturer, goes bankrupt on Monday. It will then be owned by the Govt of the US, the Govt of Canada and the Union that controls the workers at GM's plants. A delicious irony considering that the biggest car manufacturer's in communist China are owned by capitalist corporations. The question I have is, exactly who would want to buy a car manufactured by the Govt of Canada and the Govt of the USA? Goans are going to be well represented at tonight's debate. Hi Samir, This is an wrenching wager considering the context, and has a sporty feel to it, like betting on number of runs in cricket, more so when the numerical counter used is the (quarter) century: X scored a half century over YY overs. Besides, to have arrived at the number of 3 murders (essentially snuffings--there is a component rooted in sexuality here) one probably took into account cost of living etc. But why do we think even about overall possible numbers, or is it that these thoughts just happen to flow in what for many has come to mean merely existing in the existential. Is not existence ghoulish enough already? Give this a thought. Re: [Goanet] Strong Competent Governance Needed - NT 30 May 2009 -
Strong Competent Governance Needed Agnelo Fernandes, Vasco NT-Reader's View 30 May, 2009 We the citizens of Goa have often seen that the government makes a decision first and then thinks of the consequences. This is creating a problem and nuisances for investors, employees, youth and the law-abiding citizen. This is exactly what has happened in the case of SEZs, other developmental projects and now casinos. The offshore casino operators were given licences to operate and now that there is a little public opposition to the casinos, the government is likely to wash its hands off the whole matter. This approach is lacking in intelligence and basic regards for public interest. The government cannot take this sort of stand, where they give a go-ahead to a project and then backout due to public pressure. If the dicision is in public interest and is good for the economic activity of the state, then the government needs to clarify it, justify the decision and go ahead. The people of Goa don't want a government that reacts only when there is a degree of opposition. We need a government that can take an informed dicision and also justity it when the need arises. Comments: It is a well known fact that the cobling of the governments in Goa since its so called liberation in 1961 has been on the basis of self-interest of the elected persons. A minister handling a particular portfolio is the whole and sole who decides what to do and what not to do. Take the example of our present Health Minister. If he should decide that a hospital be built in the sky, it will be built. Policies are decided by individual Ministers and cabinet clearances are a sham i.e 'you scratch my back and I will scratch yours ... Or else SHUT UP.' We commend Agnelo Fernandes for his inputs and would suggest to him that he goes through the Su-Raj's ROADMAP FOR GOA which doubles up as the party's permanent manifesto, its hand-book on governance and which is available to download on www.goasu-raj.org home page. With Su-Raj, the policies and the type of governance to be followed is decided by the party well in advance and not by elected individuals as a stop-gap arrangement. The party considers its elected representatives as mere drivers of the vehicle on a given route or course with destination schedules to stick to and nothing else. BTW this party appreciates the warning issued by the Congress President Ms. Sonia Gandhi to the newly inducted ministers recently to 'deliver' or 'perish'. We hope that this does not stay a mere warning only but hard kicking of some behinds will take place sooner than later to send a clear signal. floriano lobo general secretary/spokesperson goasuraj 9890470896
[Goanet] Ayurvedic Medicines Heavy metal issue
Ayurvedic Medicines Heavy metal issue Prof.K.R.Kohli M.D(Ay), Ph.D Director-Ayurveda Research Dabur Research Foundation The developments related to the spread of Indian systems of medicine happening at the global level are no doubt encouraging for Ayurveda. Ayurveda is making its presence felt in the West. It is natural that with there would be a few who would doubt the safety of Ayurvedic medicines. We have inherited Ayurveda from the ancient Ayurveda scholars. Ayurveda is imbibed in our culture but the same is not true for Western culture. Hence a few rumblings, few negative statements and a few studies to resist or restrict the fast expanding base of Ayurveda will be quite natural. All nations have got the right to ensure the safety of their populations. Even the scientists and doctors of western medicine in these countries would not take every thing related to safety for granted as we do in case of Ayurveda in our country. We have a history of uninterrupted practice of these systems of medicine for last several thousands of years and confirming the safety of our traditionally being used products hence is not mandatory. The western medical science on the contrary adopts the procedure of toxicological studies and testing of every consumable material for Heavy Metals, Aflotoxins and the Pesticide content in products to ensure the safety of the products. We know Ayurveda is safe, but they must test it before using it on their populations. The negative publicity came as a result of just one study which does not appear to be very well planned. Herbal and Herbometaliic preparations are all taken for comparison and for devising the statistics. But that should not deter us from our plans to globalsie Ayurveda and other Indian systems of medicine. Our traditional medicines and their practice will have to enter into these newer markets only after a tough scrutiny so that people of the nations can consume them with out any doubts about safety of these products in mind. Hence we take these developments in US, Canada and UK as the acid test for Ayurveda. Ayurveda has survived for more than 5000 years and will continue to do so more effectively with newer challenges coming in its effort to globalize. The chronology of the events is that in December 2004, a group of doctors from Harvard Medical School under the leadership of Dr. Saper picked up a few samples of Herbal Medicinal Products(HMP) from different stores and tested them for the presence of Heavy metals like Hg, Pb, As and Cd. Out of the 70 products of 27 Ayurvedic Unani Companies(26 Indian and One from Pakistan) tested they came across 14 which had high heavy metal content. Out of these 14, four were known to be made from Mercury and other metals(like Mahalaxmi vilas rasa) and it was just 8 out of these 70 which were found to be containing higher than prescribed levels of heavy metals in them. The problem with this study was that metal containing compounds(Rasoushadhis) were included to derive the median and the averages which appear to be scary. The authors appear to have been ignorant about the use of metallic preparations in Ayurveda. Further, a few of the products, which were said to be free from heavy metals in one study in US, were said to be culprits in the other similar study in Canada. This highlights one point that there is an ambiguity in the testing methods. These recent rumblings on the Herbal medicinal products have necessitated for us to educate to the west the principles and methods of making Ayurvedic and Unani preparations. This need was never felt so strong earlier. The raw material for Ayurvedic medicines comprises of either of the following: - 1.Plants 2.Minerals 3.Combination of both i.e.Herbomineral/Herbo-metallic The issue of heavy metals in HMP’s can be classified in two broader categories viz. 1. Heavy Metals in pure Herbal preparations 2. Heavy Metals in Herbomineral preparations 1. Heavy Metals in pure Herbal preparations In Ayurvedic classics there are clear guidelines has been given for collection of the Raw materials in certain time, season and about the maturity of the plant. In principle the pure herbal preparations should be free from all contaminants of whatsoever nature. But era of industrialization has seen growth of industries that lead to increased levels of the pollutants in the environment, which has affected soil and water conditions. This air and ground water pollution has lead to contamination of vegetables and grains and other edible material too. It is not by chance that kids of Indians, do well at these US Spelling Bee or Geographic Bee. They take great pains to push their kids to do it. Parents of Indian kids are known to put a lot of pressure on their kids to stand out. It is even said that they live their lives through the achievements of their kids!! Chinese parents are known to be even stricter, pushing their kids to not only excel at education but to also learn the Chinese language as well as classical instruments like Violin and Piano. [Goanet] Shrikant Barve: I am worried about 'trouble due to conversion' and not of conversion.
On various e-mailing lists Shrikant Barve has been making public, comments that the Marathi Press have been making which have not been picked up by the English and Konkani media. These relate to conversions of people by a Christian sect called the Believers of Goan people, mainly belonging to other Christian sects like Roman Catholics, but also some backward class Hindus. In my opinion, Gomantak and Tarun Bharat have been trying to create an alarmist situation with regard to this issue. But this is my opinion. I think however it is time that more journalists pay attention to this issue for as Barve says, the trouble that may arise over this conversion issue may snowball into an ugly crisis which we can do without. Re: [Goanet] Preparing for the Monsoons - By Clinton Vaz
What a change from 60 years ago ! Here is Clinton Vaz my friend (I am a fan of his causes, though I have never met him and he knows only my name from Goanet) telling Goans all about the intricacies of Recycling and Composting to prepare for the monsoons in Goa. If Clinton were 28 years old in 1960, he would be advising his Benaulim (that's where he comes from, I think) audience thus: Take all your dry firewood and store them in the barn to avoid the rain. Go to Margao and buy fresh sausages so that you can hang them over the wood fire in the kitchen to cure them. While in Margao buy saltfish and furniture at the Holy Spirit Fair. You can get better prices than other times. Keep a stock of the feni that was surplus this season. Comes in good use for gloomy rainy days. In fact good for everything. Buy all the herbs and medicines that you will require for 3 months. The village doctor does not make home calls since his motorcycle slips in the water. Buy rubber flip-flops. You will ruin your leather shoes and sandals in the wet mud. Catch frogs in fields and ponds. They provide good nutrition, are tasty and best of all free. Buy tobacco and beedis for your grandmother. if she is not happy, she will not cook those tasty dishes. Go to Joao the poder's house and tell him you agree to higher prices on very rainy days. If you don't do that, he'll skip your house and you'll have to settle for Canjee those mornings. Make sure of your stock of those jackfruit skins. You want good milk from your cows and goats in wet weather. And other advice in that vein. Roland. [Goanet] Time to put sense into Goan women
Roland writes: I am not a fan of remaining in the marriage at any cost. I fully agree with you Roland. All I am asking for, if you havent noticed it, is thinking. Where was the thinking in these women who went lock, stock and barrel to marry a married man ? Where is the thinking in those who throng in lakhs to Kamakshi temple in Shiroda every umas ? Where is the thinking in our CM Digambar Kamat who visits every religious ceremony religiously ? If there is one thing Goa lacks today is thinking. Of course, not so the politicians who know to how to think to dupe people. Not so the police who know how to think to show that the crime rate is reduced. Not so the police who know how to sit when the politicians ask them to do so, and to stand when politicians ask them to do so. And not so the electorate who are willing to sell their souls (read votes) for a couple of notes. I would like to ask the parents of the victim women whom they voted for in the last elections and why! Every one thinks that their vote won't count; that it is someone else who will pay the price. Here are parents who have paid the biggest price!!! regards, Samir

The negative publicity came as a result of just one study which does not appear to be very well planned. This article appears to be a false advertising piece on behalf of Dabur, whose products were found to contain unacceptable quantities of heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, arsenic and gold. No responsible person with a proper scientific education would have made the first statement above. Testing for safety and efficacy of any product advertised to be meant for public consumption ought to be mandatory, regardless of how ancient it is. Being ancient is no guarantee that it is safe and effective. Ancient fraudulent superstitions such as astrology, numerology and exorcism also have a long history of uninterrupted practice despite having been discredited time and again. The second statement appears to be a deliberate falsehood. There are in fact numerous well-planned studies published in the mainstream peer-reviewed scientific medical literature that document high amounts of heavy metals, as well as toxicities, of ayurvedic preparations made by companies such as Dabur. Hi Tony, No apologies are necessary. We all know you didn't mean it the way it sounded. Just to add a few more snippets about Goan cooks, in the 1930s, they were so popular in Iran, that Iran started a cookery school of their own to train their own local population to compete. By the 1940s, English officers refused to sail the seas unless they had a Goan cook and a Goan butler. It goes to show that when Goans were handed lemons, they made lemonande out of the situation. They brought honour to a lowly paid, un-glamourous (if there is such a word) profession. Yet, when given charge, put in a leadership role, they have reigned in dishonour. Perhaps I am being biased and disrespectful in saying this, but have we simply failed to produce an honourable generation? However, I consoled her by telling her that her favourite FM radio will oblige her with M Boyer's songs today as a mark of respect to his long innings. Dear Tony, I was not annoyed at the comparison made between cooks and the Goa Police. We have all on occasion make such comparisons, albeit under extenuating circumstances. Hence I responded with, I understand that you may not mean what you are saying in real terms. What I always try and remember is to respect ones past posts and you have been consistently very gracious. Broadly speaking, it may perhaps do with the inadvertent manner in which comparisons are often rendered in Konknni, though less so these days. Some of it on our case may creep into our English. I have noticed myself saying some peculiar stuff but have learnt to catch myself. In the past one heard such comparisons like: To kitem, to barbeir. Tem hagudya baxin cholta. Amche polis pottak izzolele. Tem cheddun? Sheeh -- rand tem. Poilam mugo ghara amori zaun yeta. So no beef from my side. [Goanet] Serial Killer: 16th Murder (Confession) is his 1st
Serial Killer: 16th Murder Confession is his 1st Mahanand Score so far: 14+1+1=16 It does look like the score will touch 25 i.e. qtr of a Century . It seems he has done it so many times that he don’t ever remember his all victims name. e.g. 15th Victim, he does not remember the name. There was a report saying that he even killed one door-to-door salesman (Woman) when she approached his door (this is not counted in the score) The interesting part of the latest confession is that this is his first murder i.e. July 29, 1994 (Victim being Gulabi, 30 from Dabal). He smashed her face with a large stone. Dharshan Naik’s being the second murder just after 2 months of the first one. check this for updates and past list of confessions etc http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextras/3511375836/ 'The more he reveals, the more Goa Police is exposed' joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc
