The spread of bigoted false information on homosexuals by the news service and priests of one particular religion because of their provincial faith-based beliefs, as is being done below, deserves nothing but the strongest condemnation. ***Bishops and priests are citizens of the country as Dr.Santosh claims to be. They have a constitutional right to express their opinions. Their stand on different issues has its own weight. The Church has to protect the family. The scientific evidence given by me below about homosexuality comes from scientific investigation, not from religious organization (Catholic News Service). Dr.Santosh has not refuted it. Let him browse in the Internet and provide us better scientific, peer-controlled material...We have to distinguish between homosexual orientation and homosexual behaviour. Homosexual activity is morally wrong. We have to help the homosexuals with concern so as to use their freedom as much as possible for their renewal. We call gay the one who is proud of his homosexual tendency. Gays become militant and try to attack the values of our culture and militantly intend to corrupt our youth. Unhealthy, immoral, abnormal behaviour cannot be legalized (given rights). We need rehabilitation of the homosexuals. Regards. Fr.Ivo --- On Sat, 7/25/09, isouza icso...@sancharnet.in wrote: Bishops Urge Constitutional Amendment to Protect Marriage WASHINGTON (CNS) -- The Administrative Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called for a constitutional amendment to protect the unique social and legal status of marriage. ... -Catholic News Service What does the scientific evidence show about homosexuality? In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of diagnostic disorders. In retrospect, this decision appears to have been inspired by political pressure rather than medical evidence. Homosexuals of both sexes remain fourteen times more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexuals and 3½ times more likely to commit suicide successfully. Thirty years ago, this propensity toward suicide was attributed to social rejection, but the numbers have remained largely stable since then despite far greater public acceptance than existed in 1973. Study after study shows that male and female homosexuals have much higher rates of interpersonal maladjustment, depression, conduct disorder, childhood abuse (both sexual and violent), domestic violence, alcohol or drug abuse, anxiety, and dependency on psychiatric care than heterosexuals. Life expectancy of homosexual men was only forty-eight years before the AIDS virus came on the scene, and it is now down to thirty-eight. Only 2 percent of homosexual men live past age sixty-five. Male homosexuals are prone to cancer (especially anal cancer, which is almost unheard-of in male heterosexuals) and various sexually transmitted diseases, including urethritis, laryngitis, prostatitis, hepatitis A and B, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, and genital warts (which are caused by the human papilloma virus, which also causes genital cancers). Lesbians are at lower risk for STDs but at high risk for breast cancer. Homosexuals of both sexes have high rates of drug abuse, including cocaine, marijuana, LSD and other psychedelics, barbiturates, and amyl nitrate.

A lot of Priolkar's work has been going round it circles. It will be used, for instance, as the basis of a Government of Goa-funded early 2000s film on the Goa Inquisition, and then it will be cited to critique anyone questioning the logic and intent of the film! Every time you keep your CD outside the pouch, there is a high possibility that the CD could get *dirty, smudged or fingerprinted*. And the problem with most of you is that you want to clean it but you don’t know how to clean it in such a dirty condition. Cleaning Dirty CDsFor all those who want to clean a *dirty CD* with minimum effort in the cheapest way, follow the process with simple steps given below in order. - Find yourself a container (a medium sized one which is good enough to submerge a disk in it) - Squeeze into the container a table spoon of* liquid soap or window cleaning solution*. You can also use all-natural cleaning liquid made out of distilled water. - Now pour *clean water* into the container and fill it. Now the water should become *soapy *once it gets mixed with the cleaning solution added whatsoever. - Now put the* dirty disk* into the container filled with soapy water. Leave it there for about a minute or two. - Now remove the disk from the soapy water container and rinse it with *running warm water*. - Repeat the process if the disk is still a bit dirty. In case the smudges on the disk are stubborn, you can use a *soft cloth* to rub soap on those parts. - Finally *shake off the excess water* and let the disk to *dry naturally *. Do not use any artificial blower or hair drier. Now you have your shiny good as new CD which can be easily run on your computer and there are less chances of getting data copy errors on running it. ** -- With Windows Live, you can organize, edit, and share your photos.http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/products/photo-gallery-edit.aspx -- New Email names for you! http://sg.rd.yahoo.com/aa/mail/domainchoice/mail/signature/*http://mail.promotions.yahoo.com/newdomains/aa/ Get the Email name you've always wanted on the new @ymail and @rocketmail. I am not siding with Santosh or any one else here, this is just my derivation. A fetus is female for 7 week, something triggers in the womb that changes female fetus to male (in crocodiles it is the sun that heats the sand, those in the shade are female). Therefore something has gone wrong (regarding sex formation) in a woman's body (if I may put it that way). This triggering in the womans body can also go wrong and children are born with eight or 6 limbs or numerous nipples (like that of an animal) etc. Try as much as I can I cannot act (activity) as a Homosexual (waving arms and wriggling by bottom and doing a funny talk for more than 5 minutes, its tiring). Caj. (In Hindu Astrology, it is written that if a pregnant woman wants a boy to be born she should do puja at 7th week. This is an ancient writing, I wonder how they knew this. When I first read this I said it was rubbish. The change of sex at 7th week as we know now is a fairly recent 20th Cent. scientific discovery).

But now our official position has undergone a major change. Salvation, we now believe, is indeed possible outside the Church. Does this mean that those who died prior to the Second Vatican Council were not saved? Of course, this is a tongue in cheek question. The important point is what was the reason for the major change? It would be interesting to know who edactly as these churches, and what is the Vatican doing to counteract this threat. Best wishes. Dr UG Barad

For what you and I write about non-medical matters has (I believe) no significant relevance on our respective published work in medicine. Accordingly, I submit that what Priolkar may have written wrt the Printing Press in India, or perhaps cricket, kabbadi or atya-patya has no relevance to his work on the Inquisition. At this moment, while you reflect on your # 4 (infra), I am happy to rest this matter (albeit temporarily) acknowledging your #1 (infra). BTW: I take this opportunity to acknowledge Samir Kelekar's post on this topic. He is a good man, and his post has made the customary Kelekar logic, which I appreciate very much. After all, I imagine that he reads widely, puts the material read to the test i.e. Is this possible? On what basis did the author come to this conclusion? What materials did the author research? Are these all the documents? Are there un-recorded facts? How can I verify them? Do I accept this without verification? Does the author attempt to make a reasonably sound comparative analysis of the matter? If there is a doubt, can I be dogmatic in my conclusion? How do I solve my dilemma? Is it worth solving my dilemma? It should be OK, should it not for a few un-verified facts to be juxtapositioned along with verifiable facts? (No No ...Samir was not involved in the infamous and ultimately BOGUS videoCD) etc etc. Yep tthe above (and more) is what Samir Kelekar does before he writes ...surely after much reflection and deliberation; This is directly opposite of people like me who just 'run our mouths'. jc Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com: [1] I don't know what this means. [2] Priolkar also wrote a well-researched book on the history of the printing press in India - a subject that should cause no denunciation of his status as a historian on ideological grounds. [3] The question of substantiating the accusations against him with objective evidence still remains. [4] When time permits and when I get a chance I will try to address with facts whether Priolkar ever stated, without citing any evidence, that anybody else other than the New Christians and new converts was a target of the inquisition, as has been claimed.

Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 13:28:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@yahoo.com I think this is an unfair attack on the Goan historian Priolkar. His book received favorable reviews by his historian peers when it was first published. They especially pointed out the fact that his analysis was dispassionate, objective and restrained. I have already posted excerpts from those reviews in one of my previous posts. Here it is: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-July/180030.html Mario adds: As the only voice of reason, truth and peace on Goanet, I continue to be amazed by the grovelling sycophancy by some Catholic Goans as if the Portuguese were some kind of altruistic humanitarians that had some natural God-given right to colonize Goa, and comical insinuations that the Goan Catholics had some natural affinity with their Portuguese masters. I wonder if this is some kind of residual Stockholm Syndrome. We have seen the most ridiculous poppycock recently by the usual suspects suggesting that Goa's liberation was not a liberation, or that it was illegal and one even implausibly complaining that India did not consult Goans to see whether they wished to be assimilated into India. How silly is that? Then they jump to equally uninformed comments about Iraq as if there is any similarity other than both were dictatorships, the Iraqi one far more brutal and oppressive than the one in Goa, and that the Iraqi sectarian radicals started killing each other after their oppressor was removed. The dictators in Goa were comparatively less oppressive but also did not brook any opposition as my nationalist family was quick to discover. The Portuguese also ignored the precedents set by the far more powerful Brits and French who had realized 14 years earlier that the age of colonization was over. Instead, the normally slow-minded Portuguese argued smugly that Goa was an overseas province, a bizarre concoction if ever there was one. They could have left peacefully and with good will, but no. They had to defy India, which finally had had it with such intransigence. These Portuguese may have been more congenial and laid back when compared with the supercilious Brits with their uber superiority complex, but they were self-serving colonial dictators nevertheless, folks, not your blood brothers interested in your welfare. Like all colonists they exploited their colonies for their natural resources and as captive markets, while rewarding their local sycophants, creating an affluent Goan aristocracy, and encouraging divisions to continue like the caste system among the Catholics who were forcibly converted in many, if not most, cases. The Christian Portuguese knew the caste system was not a Christian practice but encouraged it nevertheless. Divide and weaken. Unlike the earlier conversions in Kerala, they made the Christians change their ancestral names, for God's sake. How Christian is that? After 1961 it was Goans who frittered away the opportunity to rule themselves properly by electing honest politicians and building rational administrative systems and sensible building codes protecting Goa's natural beauty and ambience and creating a unique state within the filth and corruption of the rest of India. Now the only thing that can be done is to salvage what is possible. It has been done. The US was a far bigger mess after the Civil War. But blaming migrant laborers and developers and miners is not going to do it. They are all operating within the system, which includes massive bribery and corruption. If we could make Rajan or Selma or Floriano or Carmen the Supreme Pooh Bah of Goa we could fix the mess in a hurry:-)) Since that option is out of the question, it all has to start with consistently electing honest politicians in every precinct. K. Priolkar's ideological orientation and has kicked up a controversy in Goan Internet circles. Priolkar's ideological orientation becomes much more clear when one reads his 'Goa Re-Discovered' which is a collection of his essays published in 1967. In the essay,'Who is a Goan?' he comes up with the ingenuous suggestion that Catholic Goans should abandon the surnames like Gama and Albuquerque which were bestowed upon them when they were converted; and revert to the Hindu names they had before conversion. Ostensibly this was to acquire a sense of pride in one's Indian ancestry. What he desisted from mentioning was that frequently the old Hindu names were caste based and would reinforce old caste hierarchies based on caste. Not that some Catholics were averse to such disclosures; Priolkar pointed out how especially around Mangalore names like Prabhu Coelho were common. His essay 'Hindu - Catholic Integration' while ostensibly about creating better relations among these major Goan communities takes great pains in rehearsing every grouse that he could find about Goan Christians and placed all the burden for fostering better communal relations on them. In 'An Appraisal of Govt.'s Policy towards Goa' was a bitter critique of Nehru's assertion that Goa had a distinct cultural identity. He argued that Marathi was the language of Goa and that Goa's culture and Maharashtra's culture was the same. He prepared the strongest ideological grounds for Goa's merger with Maharashtra that I have read. The essay 'The Portuguese Language in India' rehashes the research Priolkar did in his 'The Printing Press in India' to come to the conclusion that Goan Catholics should revert to the use of their mother-tongue - meaning Marathi!! 'Marathi Christian Literature of the 16th 17th Century' and 'Old Literature in Various Dialects of Marathi' again tries to prove that Marathi was the language of Goa and Konkani was just a dialect. While Priolkar may have been a diligent researcher, there is hardly any doubt to my mind that his research had a definite political edge. In fact he prepared a partisan agenda for MGP and BJP and other Hindutva oriented groups which is still used to this day. -- Augusto Pinto 40, Novo Portugal, Moira, Bardez, Goa, India E pinto...@gmail.com or ypinto...@yahoo.co.in P 0832-2470336 M 9881126350

Colaco jc cola...@gmail.com However, I stand by my stated position that IF Priolkar has written about the Inquisition in isolation, he could be no historian - never mind who acclaims him as one. Sure, you can tell me about the abuses and harassment Catholics face especially in the NE of India, but tell me: What have you written, to whom have you complained and/or what have you done wrt the Child Abuse scandal that rocked the Church? Until you do that and are able to examine ALL the facts that surround events, I have no reason to believe that you are anything more than mere zealot propagandists. Mario observes: Why is a historical fact a beating stick unless there are people who are strenuously trying to deny it? I don't feel beaten by anything some other Christian has done, either in the past or in the present. If someone did not write about the child abuse scandals, perhaps because they did not have any first hand knowledge or facts, does that make their accounts of the harrassment of Catholics in NE India, which they may have experienced or witnessed, a myth? This is the curious point of view that two wrongs make both less-wrong, or more understandable. Thus Sapna Sahani was told not too long ago that we should not discuss the Inquisition, unless we also discuss sati, caste, female infanticide and bride burnings. The child abuse scandals were an abomination. The harrassment of Catholics in a secular democracy is an abomination, too. I think we need to focus on the verifiable facts, not who discloses these, what else they have done or what their intentions may be. Others who disagree will present other facts, and then everyone has to make up their own mind. Now we are told that if Priolkar wrote about the Inquisition in isolation he cannot be a historian. I wonder if Priolkar was so obtuse that he ignored the context in which the Inquisition took place, and what surrounding events would justify the horrors of the Inquisition, which violated every one of the most basic teachings of Christ? Some revisionists even argue that the Inquisition eliminated capricious religious decisions and so was a good thing? Yeah, right!

Mario asks: If there are laws in Canada legally recognizing the unions of gays, how does inappropriately using the word marriage which is the definition of the formally committed union of one man and one woman, reduce ambiguity? In fact, it opens up a can of worms that would include every other permutation or combination that humans are capable of devising. It makes more sense to call committed gay unions what they are, domestic partnerships. Mervyn wrote: One of the best fans of the the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a law professor called B. Hussein Obama. His Canadian sister insists that Obama will introduce Canadian state values to the USA and rest of the world. Mario responds: Wishing the US ill as you do is unlikely to work. To begin with, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms has devolved into the Canadian Syatem of Questionable Social Concepts and Health Care Waiting Lists. Secondly, the law professor you mention is hardly a paragon of knowledge. He said last year that he had visited 57 states in the US and had one more to go, and said this year that the US was one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. One reason is that Americans are discovering the shortcomings of the Canadian systems you say he admires, especially the health system, which may be acceptable for the Canadian psyche and mentality but would be unacceptable in the US which strives for the best service possible and does not tolerate inconvenience and would not tolerate waiting lists while their lives are at risk. http://www.nowpublic.com/world/canadian-healthcare-cracking-multiple-months-waiting-list-just-see-doctor http://www.city-journal.org/html/17_3_canadian_healthcare.html http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/10/15/waittimes-fraser.html

Does it need to be spelled out. It is so clear. And again does the salvation bit still bother people. It should only bother those who believe there is salvation and its possibility through the Church, and they resent that possibility. Others should not give a damn unless one is into dialectics and polemics.. There are enough denominations that are not RC and do not follow the Vatican. What is it to anyone? Let the Churches fight this battle out. Whoever benefits will benefit, and it will not be Indian Christians. Is that not clear? How much more bashing do they deserve. To your query, : It would be interesting to know who edactly as these churches, and what is the Vatican doing to counteract this threat. Seriously what is this? I suggest that people go meet churches that are not RC and make their own exacting lists. Those churches know where they stand in terms of their Christology. This way all are happy that they did their own work and with their own findings. It is always interesting to know stuff, but I have always believed in hard work. When people go shopping they see many things that attract their attention and sometimes they are tempted to buy what they are drawn to. But we also have the experience of realizing that what we thought was good soon looses its appeal. We get bored of what we have acquired and look for something new. What is it that gives lasting satisfaction? Material possessions can never fulfil our deepest need, only God can! Have a reflective weekend discovering your deepest need! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Eighteenth Sunday of the Year ‘Bread of the Lord given to eat!’ 2-Aug-2009 Exodus 16: 2- 15; Ephesians 4: 17-24; John 6: 24-35; In today’s first reading we see on the one hand the Israelites grumbling and complaining against God because they are missing the flesh post of Egypt, and on the other we see God caring for his people and providing for their daily needs. The manna and the quails that they received in plenty have become the classic example of God’s bountiful blessings showered on his people. Moses ordered the people to collect enough for each day and for some to be preserved as a memorial of this event. This feeding with quail and manna was not meant to merely satisfy their physical hunger but to be a symbol of God’s active love. The feeding with manna is, in a sense, part of Israel’s birthright, the result of God’s covenant relationship with his people. The Obstacle in Our Path In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition. Anonymous In today’s gospel St. John tells us that after the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes the people came running back to Jesus. But they were not looking for Jesus, they just wanted more bread, more of the material things that Jesus could offer them. They had seen the sign but were blind to its significance. Jesus attempted to explain the significance of the sign, and indeed of all that he was doing and saying, but they refused to understand. Jesus was ready to offer them food that endures but they preferred food that perishes, food that would give them instant but not lasting satisfaction. The hearers were dense and refused to accept the spiritual food Jesus has to offer them. Instead they ask what miracle can he do comparable to the miracle Moses performed in the desert to feed his people. Firstly, Jesus points out that it was not Moses who worked the miracle but God; secondly, he indicated that the ‘bread from heaven’ was only so in a relative sense and it would not last; thirdly, Jesus points out that the true bread is the bread from God, which comes down from heaven and which gives eternal life. Awe-struck the people cry out ‘Give us that bread that lasts forever.’ And Jesus replies, “I am the bread of life.” The reply of Jesus causes consternation among his listeners. They do not understand and don’t want to accept what Jesus is saying. The full impact of his saying can only be found in the context of the Eucharist. Just as the full meaning of the Eucharist can only be understood in the acceptance of the full mystery of Christ- who he is and what he has done for us. Father They Just Don’t Believe….. Assuming all that Augusto says is accurate (there is still scope for doubt and interpretation), we are still left with the original (unasked, but alluded-to question): Does Priolkar's position influence his research on the Goa Inquisition? If so, in what direction does it skew it, and to what extent if material? In addition, I am also keen to understand a wider issue: if there has indeed been a Black Legend [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Legend] created about the Goa Inquisition too, as was done for the Spanish, then who has made use of this over the centuries and to what purpose? Despite the occasional distracting post, this debate has indeed been interesting and has thrown up many useful perspectives. At least, I have found them useful. FN

Considering the importance that issues such as this have in understanding communal relations both in Goa's past and present, I would think the issue is not just about Priolkar having misrepresented facts. To my mind, the issues are: * Is this is a one-sided, hyped-up portrayal of the Inquisition? * Does it buy into earlier stereotypes that could have also been hyped-up and spread by other interested parties involved in colonial or sectarian politics of the time? * Has political use been made of Priolkar's work, with or without his awareness? If so, by whom? * Has his work been open to misinterpretation, or misinterpreted by others? * How is this affecting the understanding of communalism and secularism in today's Goa. Of course, other issues too could come up in the discussion. FN

Wake up George and let us have your answers. Here is something new for you to chew over! Foreigner fallout. Herald 26 July 2009 Early bookings of holiday packages to Goa by British tourists are showing a 20 per cent drop over last year. This may well be expected after air fares and hotel rates have gone up, and the western countries are looking at an economic slowdown that could well settle into a sustained recession or, even worse, stagflation. But there's more where that came from. Not only that, the widespread negative publicity of the Scarlet Keeling case, followed by Revenue Minister Dayanand Narvekar's move to stop registration of property transactions involving foreigners has had a massive fallout. Recently, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) did a series of shows on the issue, talking to a wide range of foreigners who bought houses, apartments or started small restaurants in Goa after going through a perfectly legal process, abiding by all the requirements of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Now, hundreds of these perfectly law abiding people are finding that they cannot sell the properties they bought, owing to a dubious rule enacted by the Goa government. And, when ministers like Churchill Alemao make baseless but dramatic statements that properties of foreigners will be 'seized' and 'auctioned', it causes outrage. What ought to cause even more outrage is the fact that while the cases of hundreds of law-abiding foreign small property owners have been referred to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for investigation, the actual cause for concern - large properties bought by shadowy individuals illegally - remains hidden on government files, even after several requests by the ED. This kind of chicanery shows that the government is not serious about taking on the mafias of this world. Rather, it seeks to distract the people's attention from them by flooding the ED with cases that have few, if any, illegalities. All these issues have also contributed to the general feeling of disenchantment among those who were Goa's most ardent champions in Britain. The very people who held out this state as an ideal destination for the British are now changing their tune, thanks to the way the government has treated them. Word of mouth, any businessman will tell you, is the most powerful of promotion and advertisement strategies. If Goa is being badmouthed in Britain by the very people who earlier sang its praises, it is bound to have an impact. It is time that the tourism industry in the state also realised that Goa is no longer the low-cost destination it used to be. South East Asia - mainly Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia - offer comparable facilities at much lower rates. Unless they can gear up to take on the competition, in bad times, people will always go for the lower-cost destination. In which case, as things stand now, Goa loses. ===

Yet, so little is known about this aspect of our past that when I mentioned the topic to a number of Goans they were aware of it altogether. The Goa inquisition has at times been used by fundamentalist groups to create communal discord so it is a sensitive issue but one that still needs to be investigated; moral accountability for the past is essential to moving ahead. One historian who has written a book about the Goa Inquisition is A. K. Priolkar. Was his work coloured by his own political ideology? Or is it to be given credence based on its own merit subject to an acceptable standard of objectivity? Here are some views expressed on the Goa Inquisition and Priolkar’s credibility. Goa Ministers and bureaucrats were interviewed, with excruciating results. Do check them out! Why do you find it impossible to accept my contentions: 1. That the 450+ cases cover a wide spectrum of circumstances and it would be invidious for any of us (read you or me) to generalise or make any claims as to the number of guilty or innocent cases. 2. That in law every one is innocent till they are proved guilty . Unless there is a Mugabe sitting in judgment. Are you? Best wishes Eddie

What happens is simply the normal course of embryonic development determined by the genes in the chromosomes. The crocodile is a completely different story. When I first read this I said it was rubbish. The change of sex at 7th week as we know now is a fairly recent 20th Cent. scientific discovery). Hindu astrology is garbage. There is no connection between it and the science of biology. Cheers, Santosh

Homosexual activity is morally wrong. We have to help the homosexuals with concern so as to use their freedom as much as possible for their renewal. But who uses CDs these days? Jim F New York. Sent from my iPhone Jul 24, 2009 How to Clean a Dirty CDhttp://cutefunzone.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-to-clean-dirty-cd.html Do you know how to clean a CD? Now you have your shiny good as new CD which can be easily run on your computer and there are less chances of getting data copy errors on running . .

I am lost for words as these astute gentlemen having been in politics for more than a couple of decades, have suddenly realized that drug trade is flourishing in their very back yard, when I was young I had read about a person called Rip Wan Winkle, is this his second coming ? During the 60's and the 70's when hippy culture was blooming, drugs were the essence of that culture, a lot of iconic figures like singers, actors, musicians, artists were heavily addicted to this dreadful fantasy fare, as a result of which the indulgence in drugs became a way of life in Europe and America and spread into Asia as well. Today with all the awareness and rehabilitation programmes a lot has changed but a lot more is still left to be done on the eradication of this highly destructive concourse called substance abuse. Goa too became a victim of drugs through the hippy culture and it is still spreading like the angel of death in all directions, so much so that today even teenagers in schools have become addicts. Our children are regularly exposed to the possibility of drug abuse and it is the duty of the parents and the elders to guard and guide them away from this dreadful predicament that awaits them at every corner. It is a known fact that the dealers who victimize our kids are more often than not, protected by the powerful and the rich, who are either politician or people who use politicians as pawns to get their dirty work done and the police are the poor dolls in the puppet show, where the strings are pulled by the corrupt politicians and their masters. Any illegal activity cannot survive and thrive without the backing of the politicians and look the other way policy of the police, police could be init of their own free will or could be forced to compromise by the politicians. Substance abuse has reached alarming proportions in Goa and it is the duty of our Government to curb this menace at the earliest and do so with a firm hand. Our children are our future and we should protect them at all costs. Let us not play with the future of our children, parents and elders be vigilant for any signs and do not be aggressive with children who have become addictive to substance abuse. I was deeply distressed when an acquaintance told me about his two nieces who had scored between 80 - 85 % in their SSC exams and now come 12th standard, they are hardly sober to know where they are, two pretty young girls with terrific school academic records done in by substance abuse and the constant fights within the family, who is responsible and who is to be blamed and above all how do we tackle this very serious and delicate problem ? I remember my college days in Bombay during the latter part of the 70's charas was easily available at most of the stalls around the college and a good number of students both male and female use to end up in the zombie time zone. I still remember the tall, lanky, gangling Sanjay Dutt mostly bowled over with hazy eyes in the college canteen with his high flying friends, I never ever thought he would survive more than a year, but in him we see what self belief, determination and love of the family can do, to change the wheels of fortune, a person awaiting his doom has turned into a legend in Bollywood, though controversies have been following him where ever he goes. He has shown that no matter what is said or done, it's one's will power along with family love that makes you or breaks you. The late Sunil Dutt who was never embarrassed by the ethics of his wayward son, once said Sanjay was a sick child and he needed all his love and today we see the result. Let's all ask our Police to use an iron hand to deal with drug traffickers and suppliers and expose all those involved in the spread of this deadly epidemic, and let's handle all those children who have become unfortunate victims of substance abuse with our love and our true concern rather than with our anger and our scorn. It is generally said that most of the addicts look for happiness and solace in drugs, may be our love and our genuine concern could help change their lives. It's definitely worth a
