Osama bin Laden, created nourished by the US of A in their impotent rage vs USSR adventure in Afghanistan...er...Mario... AT Selma Carvalho: A very similar situation is occurring in Goa. For all the time I have been on Goanet at least, I have been crying hoarse about how the fundamentalist groups in Goa will grow to strangle our very democracy. Some months back I was demonised as being a fear-monger and trying to divide the community along communal lines. Now the chickens have come home to roost. They aren't targeting just Muslims or Christians, their targets have turned to respectable members of the Hindu community themselves. The only problem is how do we fell the giant of distortion that we have created in our midst? Response: *Selma* *History is replete with examples of Frankensteins who devoured their creators. Bhindranwala was a creation of Indira Gandhi to split the Akalis. In the end, he was the cause of her death. Prabhakaran of LTTE was supported clandestinely by the Indian govt. In the end, he was the cause of former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s death. The Shiv Sena was a Congress creation to put down the communists. Today the SS has grown to become a monster whom the govt cannot touch.* *Similarly, the RSS/BJP has spawned a number of organizations like HJS, BD, VHP, Ekal Vidyalaya’s, Vidya Bharati’s, Sri Ram Sene’s etc. to do their dirty work so that their hands can be kept clean. Tony De Sa had a simple case. He was coming down to Goa from Bombay. He was to board the bus at a particular point but at the last moment the bus stop was changed .He had t o take a taxi. Paid Rs. 30 for the same. He filled a case in the consumer's court fought the case and won.His case was not much for gain but to teach people like me how to fight. This was the time I too learnt that I should fight for my right. I had bought IFB washing machine, two years warranty. Within six months the chasis got rusty. They replaced it. Eight days before the expiry of the warranty the timer started giving trouble. The mechanic was a wise person. He took a thread and wound it round and made it work .The timer worked and exactly one month later it stopped to be told that I had to pay for the timer. I approached the consumer's court. I won the case. Got a free IFB and got a cheap publicity also. The result this news of the case came in all the leading newspapers in India. It was a loss for the IFB. They came out with best quality product. Its almost ten years now that I have the IFB God forbid nothing has happened so far. Good on you Albert! [Goanet] Gomantak Times editorial
The Editor Gomantak Times Panaji Dear Editor, I applaud your deep sense of fair play and justice. As you so rightly observe in your editorial of Friday 21 August, appropriately weightily titled 'Of freedom of expression and religious sentiment', till date no violent means have been employed by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) against artist Subodh Kerkar. The HJS, as you so perspicaceously observe, has been restricting itself to a press conference, threatening phone calls and a morcha. Bravo I say! No doubt you will shortly write another equally eloquent editorial demanding that Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane, that fine young Goan statesman, be immediately exonerated in a vile case brought against him by Adv Aires Rodrigues for making a threatening phone call to him. If threats given over a telephone cannot hurt Subodh, why on earth should anyone think they can hurt Aires? Why victimise poor Vishwajeet; he allegedly only made ONE threatening phone call, while the HJS hordes made hundreds to Subodh. I am sure, given your innate commitment to fair play and justice, that you cannot but agree, and will soon set pen to paper (or should I say fingers to keyboard?) to similarly support our great leader Vishwajeet! Missions in 11 other countries -- Libya, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Syria, Lebanon, Thailand, the Maldives and Iraq -- will annually get Rs.500,000 each. The conditional threat of imprisonment issued from its chair against him and Peter Fernandes, two private citizens, for speaking their mind in public, just proved this fact. If the conditional threat is carried out, it would be an unwarranted assault on Samir and Peter, and an egregious infringement on their fundamental right to peaceful free speech in their homeland. In my opinion, Samir and Peter have calmly expressed their views on the distressing state of affairs in their beloved Goa. They neither threatened violence nor called upon anyone else to commit any violence or disruption of civic life. Accordingly, any violence on their persons would constitute a gross abuse of power, which would have to be tested at the polls, and in the courts of law. I am willing to spend time in prison with Samir and Peter to defend my right to freely express my opinion in this free democratic country. I ask all Goans to sign on with us in this symbolic stand to affirm the principle that in a free democracy ordinary citizens, individually and collectively, are no less powerful than any branch of their government or any elected representative that serves at their pleasure. http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=26275cid=13 __ Do You Yahoo!? [Goanet] INDIA: Priest says Hindus, Muslims must end provocations (UCAN News)
INDIA Priest says Hindus, Muslims must end provocations August 20, 2009 | IB07781.1563 | 486 words Text size MANGALORE, India (UCAN) -- A Catholic priest engaged in interreligious dialogue has voiced serious concerns about religiously provocative incidents that have taken place in the Hindu and Muslim communities in Karnataka state. Desecrating Hindu and Muslim religious places has been going on for some time in the southern Indian state, says Father John Fernandes, who manages Samanwaya (harmony), an inter-religious movement in Mangalore, a costal town. The latest in the series of acts has been the expulsion of a Muslim girl student from a Hindu-managed college near Mangalore for wearing a headscarf, said Father Fernandes who chairs the department of Christian Studies in Mangalore University. In that case, some Hindu students demanded permission to wear saffron shawls if the college allowed the girl to wear a headscarf. The principal finally expelled the Muslim girl. In another incident on Aug. 15, India's Independence Day, a rumor spread that a cow's head had been found inside a prominent Hindu temple in Mangalore. Hindus consider the cow a sacred animal. Father Fernandes said that in reality there was only a bone fragment brought in by either a stray dog or someone with vested interests in sowing discord. However, after the rumor spread, Hindu groups surrounded the temple and threatened to create trouble if the culprits were not arrested. The following day, a pig's head was placed inside a mosque in Mandya, a town near Mysore that has experienced communal tensions. Similar actions had led to sectarian violence in several towns in the state this year, the priest said. These are all unfortunate incidents that lead to communal tension in the state, Father Fernandes told UCA News Aug. 20 after he appealed to the two warring communities to maintain peace. The priest said some groups want to divide Muslims and Hindus in the state to consolidate Hindu votes. Karnataka has nearly 53 million people, 83.9 percent of whom are Hindu. Muslims constitute about 12 percent while Christians make up less than 2 percent. It is high time people realized the vested elements' real motive and kept cool, Father Fernandes remarked. He says minority groups are aware of Hindu radicals' motives and have so far refused to be provoked. Father John Fernandes also accused the state government of corrupting young minds. He noted that after last year's terrorist attack in Mumbai, western India, the Karnataka government organized college students in fighting against terrorism that eventually turned out to be a movement to isolate and attack Muslims. Now young minds are polluted with sectarian sentiments, a trend that is dangerous to the core, the 73-year-old priest noted. Father Fernandes said his efforts to foster sectarian harmony and peaceful coexistence in colleges also received a setback after the Karnataka government started promoting the Hindu nation theory among students. Goans lived in misery under Portuguese: Teotonio Written by RAMNATH N PAI RAIKAR Friday, 21 August 2009 01:16 NAVHIND TIMES Well-known Goan historian and head of the department of history, at Universidade Lusofona, Lisbon, TEOTONIO R DE SOUZA speaks in an exclusive interview with RAMNATH N PAI RAIKAR about the second edition of his book ‘Medieval Goa: A Socio-Economic History’, which will be released in the city on August 21. What made you write ‘Medieval Goa’ three decades ago? The story, as historians would say, begins during my childhood. I got to hear lot of village stories from my grandfather, who though illiterate was a man of village and popularly known as ‘Lamb Jaco’ (Tall Jaco), as well as my grandmother. My grandfather, who hailed from the village of Moira would be immaculately dressed in a suit when he visited Mapusa town, but always wore a loin cloth once he returned to his village. He would even abundantly use his vocabulary of bad words in Portuguese language to denounce the colonial rule. He, like many others in the village nursed anti-colonial feeling. All these things stayed with me. Many years later, to be precise, during early 1970s, I completed my MA in philosophy in Pune and then returned to Goa. When back, I had lot of time at my disposal to carry out research on Goa as it existed during the 17th century, in the state archives. At that time, the Jesuits in Goa wanted me to do doctorate in philosophy at Rome, which I refused. Unfortunately, I could not receive guidance from the noted Goan historian, Dr Pandurang Pissurlekar as he had already passed away and had to complete my doctorate on my own. The topic of my thesis was ‘Goa in the 17th Century: A Socio-Economic History’. Sadly, there was lot of controversy when it came out in 1979 in the form of a book, ‘Medieval Goa: A Socio-Economic History’. People like Carmo Azavedo said that 17th century was not a medieval period as Europe considered it as an early modern period. However, I am still of the opinion that mode of production in a region or a country at a particular time, decides the period of that region or country. I follow the principal of D D Kosambi that Indian history should not be treated as an episode of colonial history. For me, Goa and India have their own history, independent of Portuguese or British regimes. How is the second edition of this book different from the first one? Have you made certain changes including additions to the second edition, now that more than thirty years have passed since the first edition came out and lot of water passed under the Mandovi Bridge as well as Ponte de 25 Abril? The second edition of the book has certain improvements in it. I have taken into account the outcome of the general historical research – not necessarily linked to Goa - that came up during past 30 years. This historical research has been critically reviewed in the bibliographical essay as well as final bibliography included in the second edition of the book. However, there was no need to change the basic argument in the first edition, though some details were added. The first edition of the book stands well as it is, even after three decades of its publication. Then there is some new information in the footnotes and as I have mentioned, in the bibliographical essay as well as final bibliography, for the benefit of the readers. What was the main reason behind selecting 17th century as a period to put Goa under the scanner? You see, 16th century spoke about the glorious achievements of Portuguese as ‘Heroes of the Sea’ while 17th century saw the decline of the Portuguese empire. I also believed that to take stock of Goa as a colony of Portugal, a century long existence of Portuguese in this region was sufficient. The period was just apt; they were no more the masters of the sea, their trade and commerce was no more profitable, and they were gradually moving to religious orders, with their interest in land growing. The Portuguese rulers, in fact went after the temple lands, as these were the best lands available in Goa. And how was the social life in Goa during the 17th century? As I have mentioned, religion started becoming one of the main aspects of social life during 17th century and the process got completed by the middle of the 17th century. The period saw struggle between white traders and white religious leaders, both of whom managed to reach the villages of Goa. This particular aspect was always neglected by the historians. Fortunately, I managed to study the village council proceedings, which informed me about this aspect. The new cult in Baroque style of religion saw competitions between villages to construct bigger churches, which naturally brought about bankruptcy of the village economy. I have taken Moira village as such classical case in my book. The Hindus were sidelined in this process and their presence was almost nothing. Thus the conservative Hindu families moved out to neighbouring areas, taking

The International Day of Peace is celebrated September 21, then why should we have on August 23? It is a Church Leader’s totally show off. Poor Christian Liberation movement (PCLM) says that mostly Dalit Christians were killed in kandhamal, Orissa last year. Of course we must pray for their souls and for the victims also. We must also remember that Dalit Christians are being killed every day. Why you are not paying attention for Dalit Christians who are discriminated socially, economically and politically every day since ever Christianity came to India, especially in South India? We can say that killing is taking place every day in the churches. Why are you closing your eyes and not listing the hue and cry of Dalit Christians who are mentally torture? You yourself are killing your own people, Dalit Christians, internally. Poor Christian Liberation Movement (PCLM) President Mr. R. L. Francis says that some of the denominations are very busy in converting the Dalit Hindu into Christianity and collecting huge money from abroad. They have made conversion like a business. If they convert Dalit Hindu by hook and crook, then there will not be a peace in the society. Thus conversion and peace can not go together. Poor Christian Liberation Movement (PCLM) says that instead of organizing meetings we should work for rehabilitation and assistance needed for the victims of violence. The work of assistance to the refugees are still incomplete, compensation is inadequate and in many cases not even distributed even after a year. Our goal must be the rehabilitation of the victims. In my last post on this thread, I invited Goanetters to post on Fox News blog, like I have started doing. Here are three comments to what I posted there - similar to what I posted on Goanet. As those following this thread know, I post under the pseudonym Rad21. by winstonsmith84 Florida [Aug 22, 2009 6:35:45 AM] rad21: That is the most lucid comment in regards to Healthcare Reform I have ever read, seen or heard to date. --- by rvh2467 North Carolina [Aug 22, 2009 7:55:45 AM] rad21 - good analysis. by katielee4211 [Aug 22, 2009 9:04:48 AM] Rad 21: Excellent! Domnic, is it possible that the Saudi sense of what is right or wrong (depiction of gods as images, non-Koranic religious texts) just clashes with the standards of others? If so, whose conceptions should hold valid in Saudi Arabia itself? When I was a young student in West Germany many moons ago, I found that smooching on a train was quite acceptable, but a group of 15 well-pigmented twenty-something-year-olds from various parts of the Third World sharing a hearty joke on the same train caused consternation! We need to remind ourselves that religious tolerance wasn't a given in most parts of the world till the 19th century. I'm impressed by countries like Malaysia and Bangladesh where, for the most, religion is quite a personal matter contrary to the stereotypes we have and often promote about Muslims. (The latter has a fundamentalist problem in pockets, much like India.) I'm sure there must be many other such countries, which one has not visited. But, for some reason -- or is it, for a reason? -- Saudi Arabia is always created into the poster boy when we need to make a whipping boy of The Other! FN 2009/8/22 Domnic Fernandes domval...@hotmail.com: You are right, Rajan. Every non-Muslim is harassed at the Saudi Arabian immigration and customs office, but Hindus are indeed singled out because they think they are 'kaafir' - people without a religion. If a minister is kicked out of the cabinet for corruption then he should be kicked out of the Membership of Legislative Assembly for the same reason. Strange are the laws of the country. btw, who is the dirty corrupt minister? === PANAJI: With the opposition to continuation of two “tainted” ministers in the cabinet led by Mr Digambar Kamat growing in the Congress party, there were indications that they might be dropped from the cabinet soon after Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. According to sources in the Congress party, a senior minister belonging to the party that was accused of demanding a bribe of Rs one crore from the owners of an industrial unit that is located in his constituency to allow them to reopen their closed unit in South Goa has been ordered to be dropped. The sources further said that the central leaders of the party, with whom the complaint was lodged by the management of the unit, have expressed displeasure over the minister’s activities. The central leader s of the party have directed the Chief Minister to remove the minister from his cabinet at the earliest. Sources in the Congress party also said that there was also intense pressure for removal of Transport Minister, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavlikar for his alleged role in going ahead with the controversial decision to implement high security registration number plates for vehicles, which was being opposed by the party as well as the opposition, besides general public. The sources further said that some senior Congress leaders also want action against the two ministers and since the high command has given go ahead for dropping of the ministers, the Chief Minister was likely to not only drop them and bring two Congress leaders to replace them but also reshuffle the portfolios of his cabinet colleagues, an exercise that many feel was long overdue. http://www.navhindtimes.in/news/goa-news/2279-2-ministers-likely-to-be-dropped-soon joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

[Goanet] G'bye Goa - Goan Emigration-6: HERALD(Goa), Aug 23, 2009
G'BYE GOA: GOAN EMIGRATION-6 By Valmiki Faleiro How far and wide did Goan émigrés reach? It'd be pointless to list the locations within India. Goans are settled all over urban India, save, perhaps, Kashmir and the North East. The CDS study reports that Goans are in 27 States in India, even if 80% of them are concentrated in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi. Proportionate to population, more Goan Catholics held ranks in India's defence services than any other Indian community (Sikhs would take that credit more in file than rank), right from British times. Most such Goans, on retirement, settled around cantonment cities. (My dad, a doc in the then Indian Army Medical Corps, served from Kashmir to Kerala, but returned home at the end of his commission.) Let's pan to where Goans reached across the seven seas and seven continents. Where they worked, and often permanently settled. With a list of nations of the world and my own knowledge/hearsay, which, be fore-cautioned, is limited. The picture is astounding. There would be no place on earth where a Goan didn't piss, if one counts Goan seamen and a former NIO-Goa scientist couple (and others still serving) who lived multiple times in the non-country continent of Antarctica! On a more serious note, I arrived at 91 countries where Goans were, and another 17 where they probably also were. Alphabetically: Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria. Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Botswana, Brazil, Burma, Burundi. Canada, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Congo, Costa Rica, Cyprus. Denmark, Djibouti. Ecuador, Ethiopia. Fiji, Finland, France. Gabon, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guinea-Bissau. Iceland, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast. Jamaica, Japan, Jordan. Kenya, Kuwait. Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Libya, Luxembourg. Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Mozambique. Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway. Oman. Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Portugal. Qatar. São Tomé and Príncipe, Saudi Arabia, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden. Tanzania (not counting the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar, where once Goans lived in large numbers), Thailand, The Bahamas, The Netherlands. Uganda, UAE, UK, USA, Uruguay. Venezuela. Yemen. Zaire, Zambia, Zimbabwe. And that's not counting several places in the West Indies, like Cayman Islands, where Goans in appreciable numbers today work and live. Considering their presence in the neighbourhood, it's highly probable that Goans reached: Bolivia, Brunei, Chad, Central African Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Gambia, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Liberia, Micronesia, Nicaragua, Niger, Senegal, Swaziland, Syria. I'm not aware of Goans in: Afghanistan, Algeria, Andorra, Antigua Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Comoros, Cuba, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Mali, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, North Korea, Rwanda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Santa Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia (save recent Goans taken captive for ransom by pirates off its coast!), Sudan, Suriname, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey and Vietnam. Also not of any in the 1992 cluster of former Soviet Bloc/Balkan states: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia. Robert Newman, the American anthropologist, says (in his Goddess of Dreams, page 89) that Goa's emigration may pro-rata be the highest in the world. If true, the great Goan scatter would rank only next to the Babylonian Exile of Jews in 586 BC. Unwittingly, this dispersal is dubbed the Goan Diaspora - *exiled* from their homeland, as it were, by economic, not racial (read Persian) forces as Jews were. Without doubt, proportionately more Goans live outside India than from any other Indian community. PS: Forget the editor of a local weekly who tells tales of coconut trees with branches and moveable land, the local edition of a national daily told us on Aug 13 that Our Lady of Boa Morte at Candolim is Happy Death of Our Lady.
