64th Santosh Trophy: Goa's Cavin Lobo Snatches Late Winner Against Karnataka Goa get the desired head-start by beating Karnataka with an injury-time strike... By Anselm Noronha 29-Jul-2010 6:20:00 PM Goa screamed in a late arrival in the first Quarter-Finals of the ongoing 64th Santosh Trophy when substitute Cavin Lobo came in and completed the job, giving his team a winning start, on Thursday. The weather was in a good mood at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salk Lake artificial turf ground, Kolkata. It drizzled a bit before the match. -It appeared as if both teams were studying each other before letting their game flow and it seemed the sides almost forgot that they have to score as well. The slow-paced match saw a stale first 45 minutes. The substitution of Cavin Lobo in place of Milagres Gonsalves set a new face to the match in the second half. Goa coach Mariano Dias was a pleased man with the result. While talking to Goal.com in the post match comments session, Dias seemed fairly content with the result. The boys played well from the beginning. The first 20 minutes were very slow. The second half was fast. We had lots of opportunities to score. The ball even hit the pole once and bounced back but we won in the end. The first win is always important as it lifts the confidence of the boys, he said. Karnataka and Goa will have their next matches versus Services (3:30 pm start) and Punjab (6:00 pm start) respectively, at the YBK stadium in Kolkata on July 31. http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/2290/santosh-trophy/2010/07/29/2047262/64th-santosh-trophy-goas-cavin-lobo-snatches-late-winner-against- * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! [Goanet-News] NEWS: Special anti-Maoist cell needed: Goa assembly panel
Special anti-Maoist cell needed: Goa assembly panel 2010-07-29 20:30:00 Almost two months after a leader of an Orissa-based fringe Maoist group was arrested in Goa, a legislative panel has recommended setting up of a special cell to keep tab on Maoist activities in the state. The ad hoc committee on home, chaired by Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar, also said that police needed to keep tabs on activities of labourers and immigrants, employed in the state's burgeoning mining and tourism sectors. 'The committee recommends that the police department create a special cell to keep track of movement of workers and immigrants from areas known to be Naxalite (Maoist) infested,' Parrikar, a former chief minister said. The committee report was tabled in the assembly Thursday. Shambhu Beck, leader of the Maowadi Trishul Manch (MTM) was arrested in May this year, while he was hiding in Goa. Beck, 25, was wanted in Goa for crimes ranging from kidnapping, dacoity, arson and robbery. http://sify.com/news/special-anti-maoist-cell-needed-goa-assembly-panel-news-national-kh3u4ddbgbi.html * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! Re: [Goanet] All Religions for Human Integral Development
From: U. G. Barad dr.udayba...@gmail.com Fr. Ivo vide Message: 7, dated: Sun, 25 Jul 2010 finally wrote on above subject: Dear Dr.U.G.Barad, You are distorting my clarion-call and the teaching of Christianity by linking with gay sex scandal in Italy or in India. I have quoted Hindu wisemen and people of integrity... My response: Fr. Ivo it is up to you to interpret on my straight-forward questions posed to you. In fact, your earlier message(s) prompted me to ask you those questions. Most importantly I have not linked Christianity with gay sex scandals. If at all you have to blame for destroying your clarion-call and your teachings ..blame those clergy involved in gay sex. For entire world knows the involvement of clergy in gay sex scandal as well as the apologetic response of most respected Benedict. ***Dear Dr.U.G.Barad, There is no need to be so pessimistic. Scandals have always been in the world. Jesus says: Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! (NARB, Mt 18:7)). The Church is not going to fall because of those scandals. Christianity cannot be judged by those scandals. We live in a time in which media can give us a distorted image of the real reality. Also money is involved in this issue. Where there is money, there is devil's workshop. The love of money is the root of all evil (1 Tim 6:10). My answer to you was in terms of the Hindu reformers and wisemen. It is a difficult situation for our beloved and great Pope Benedict XVI. There is a need to analyse the whole situation: the sexual revolution, the media hype, the economic power, the political gimmicks... I did not speak about our problems of today. India has to shine in the future, therefore we need introspection and hard work. More over, you being a clergy I thought I would get more clarity on the issues involved. But from your above answer I conclude that our India will never shine in the way you projected it earlier. ***I do not see any connection between the two points. Why should India not shine if there are gay scandals in America? India has its problems, some of them are rooted in the culture, others in the religion itself. All of us need a cosntant renewal... Re: [Goanet] Celibacy Today
From: Venantius J Pinto venantius.pi...@gmail.com Very Interesting article, but unless I am misreading it, there is something odd in: Some kinds of sexual behavior are always DONE BADLY, like promiscuity, rape, and pedophilia. Could this be an American inflection? Can they be DONE BETTER? What was intended perhaps WAS: Some kinds of sexual behavior are always BAD, like promiscuity, rape, and pedophilia. **Dear Venantius, I shall give you the answer in three parts. A.The Author is an American psychologist. 1.Let us see the full text: Let's tell the truth. Any kind of sexual behavior (and celibacy is a form of sexual behavior) can be done badly. Some kinds of sexual behavior are always done badly, like promiscuity, rape, and pedophilia. Some sexual behaviors are inherently immature and pathological. Celibacy, its critics notwithstanding, is not one of these. I have been celibate all my life (I knew when I was eight years old that I was called to be a priest). Those who denounce celibacy as immature or perverse or manipulation by ecclesiastical authority I accuse of ignorance, ill will, or perversity. Period! I welcome the opportunity to take the saner people with this position on in public debate. 2.The Author has mentioned three types of sexual behaviour: the first one is always wrong (done badly). It is intrinsically evil--according to situation ethics, some moral rules may be virtual absolutes, in the sense that it is hard to envisage the possibility of there ever being a proportionate reason for going against them. The prohibition of rape, forcing another to violate his or her conscience, dropping a nuclear bomb that would kill a million people, pedophilia, would for them be in this category. 3.The second one is inherently immature and pathological. It can be wrong, but there is a difference: for example, homosexuality can be a result of immaturity, as in the case of young boys, or pathological. Scientifically there is no gay gene nor is it genetically determined. There is free will, it is the outcome of several factors. See the website: http://www.narth.com/docs/hom101.html Homosexuality 101: What Every Therapist, Parent, And Homosexual Should Know Julie Harren, Ph.D., LMFT Homosexuality is an issue that has often been mishandled by therapists due to misinformation on the topic. Although not supported by the research, many therapists believe that homosexuality is solely biological in nature, and therefore unchangeable. Yet despite ongoing efforts, researchers have not discovered a biological basis for same-sex attractions. In fact, many researchers hypothesize that a homosexual orientation stems from a combination of biological and environmental factors. For example, when asked if homosexuality was rooted solely in biology, gay gene researcher, Dean Hamer, replied, Absolutely not. From twin studies, we already know that half or more of the variability in sexual orientation is not inherited. Our studies try to pinpoint the genetic factors...not negate the psychosocial factors (Anastasia, 1995, p. 43). In addition, brain researcher Simon LeVay has acknowledged that multiple factors may contribute to a homosexual orientation (LeVay, 1996). What, then, are the causes of homosexual attractions? These feelings typically stem from a combination of temperamental factors and environmental factors that occur in a child's life. According to Whitehead and Whitehead (1999), Human behavior is determined by both nature and nurture. Without genes, you can't act in the environment at all. But without the environment your genes have nothing on which to act (p. 10). One way of understanding this combination might be expressed in the following equation: Genes + Brain Wiring + Prenatal Hormonal Environment = Temperament Parents + Peers + Experiences = Environment Temperament + Environment = Homosexual Orientation While environmental factors may include experiences of sexual abuse or other traumatic events, a common contributor to same-sex attractions is a disruption in the development of gender identity. Gender identity refers to a person's view of his or her own gender; that is, his or her sense of masculinity or femininity. Gender identity is formed through the relationships that a child has with the same-sex parent and same-sex peers. ...Research studies have revealed that change of sexual orientation does take place (see Spitzer, 2003; Byrd Nicolosi, 2002). It is not a quick or easy process, but as with any other therapeutic issue, varying degrees of change are achievable through therapy and other means. The inaccurate concept that homosexuality is solely biological is extremely misleading. Many therapists tell their clients that homosexuality is biological and therefore unchangeable. These therapists encourage their clients to embrace a gay identity, even when such clients are seeking change for their orientation. In doing so, therapists negate clients' rights to self-determination. Clients have

I have also told it some years ago to a national Congress Minority leader from Nagpur who was down in Goa as an observer for the elections; the headquarters of the Goa BJP is at Congress House in Panjim. The ATM of this bank is located in a dimly lit street opposite the Jardin. A number of neo-Goans (I am not saying migrants or ghatis like r lest I be castigated) congregate at a pan shop which is illegally located on the pavement there and which has such pull that it sells gutka which is displayed in strings of pouches openly. Can anyone lady or gent feel secure here while withdrawing cash, a ready temptation for crime? This whole security guard business is a big racket, although perhaps they are not breaking any laws. The guys raking in the money are the owners of the security companies. The guards are paid a pittance. The amusing thing is, there's this money sloshing around where no real service or product is delivered. The whole security thing is a sham. All it does is being in more bodies into Goa, i.e. more paan, more gutka, more spit, more sh*t. There must be a supplier involved in the chain - one whose task is to pick off bhaiyyas from UP/Bihar/Jharkhand etc, and put them on a train to Goa. Here they are outfitted with the security guard fancy dress and instructed to warm a chair on Goa's pavements while chatting with fellow ghatis. Still, considering the rathole they came from, Goa to them must seem a heaven. But this is a bad, bad deal for Goa and Goans. The white trash that comes to Goa, while abominable, is biodegradable. When Goa finally turns into a stinkhole they will find alternative pastures. But the ghatis who come here are forever. Not only are they non-bio-degradable, they are rapid bio-multipliers via a process known as reproduction. Furthermore, our politicos have learnt to win elections by stuffing the electoral rolls with these names. Goans continue to sleep. I guess we simply have to now change our baseline standards for Goa. Soon we will hear phrases like, Goa being not as dirty as UP or not as crowded as Mumbai. These problems ought to have been foreseen in 1961. We can't do much about it now. Goans are too fractious, our house is divided, and there's apathy all around. Regards, r * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! [Goanet] Goan Sport's Golden years were in the 70s! *B*mboi Goans*
I forgot to mention the Bomboi Goans...there were so many in hockey.the India goalkeeper who won the world Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Cedric Pereira (?) who is now in Toronto..so many others from the Railways and Mahindrassome footballers too.then there was athlete Eddy Sequera who came 4th in the 400 meters at the Munich Olympics I think. Goan sports writers: I remember fondly the Crasto family from Bycullamaybe Jane Gillian Rodrigues/Eugene may fill in on them. They were both sportsmen and journalists. I understand Darryl Crasto passed on a few years ago. The whole Bomboi Goan thing happened in the pleasant months of November (aside from the Bandra feast in December (?), this was the other major happening) when the Rovers Cup got into the quarter final stage and the.suddenly, there was Concani at the around the Cooperage with the chaai and baajas on old newspaper at half time. Before any major game featuring a Goan team, there was a thick line of Goans walking towards the Cooperate from Dhobitalao! The big draw at the Cooperage was Vasco Club.even today, Vasco draws a crowd there I guess for nostalgia...they were a big top team at the Rovers. It was the only tournament they did not win in the South apparently. In Goa, there were clubs but none with a following as Vasco Club! Any one remember the football referees from the old days? There is the famous Popot (Bina/Vasko).he was the bigger draw than any game he refereedand his decisions were usually controversial. Even if he got a call right, he was abused. It was a habit. The seriousness he did his job was comical at best. One sees him around usually after a Pro League game in Margao talking in Portuguese (so Ch^rchill wont understand) which actually sounds closer to Cannad to my ears. One thing though...with a pet name like that and all the abuse, I admire his courage and persistence in refereeing games. He never gave up. Maybe he liked the attention. Guess there were not too many referees around then. He was particularly great during the two monsoon tournaments at the MPT grounds in Bina. One never appreciated the football there then but in hind sight, people came from great distances to watch football in the rain.it was great with the mud and the water an a misbehaving ball. To complete the drama, there was Popot in charge of the game (I think he was part of the organizing group as well)!!! The other memorable referee was the late Simplicio of Majorda. He was a teacher by profession, baatkar in his spare time and a referee at other times. He had a bit of a temper and lived close to the Musoon football ground and there were instances when the going got rough during a game..(there is no Goa Poolice in the villages yo).he quietly slipped away from the action and back to his darkened home!!! “nudism” in Dr. Pereira’s paintings and Laxman’s ‘Last supper’ Carton In which century are we living? The creative impulse of the artist who has no axe to grind with any religions of human origin OR the label of religion which is stuck on his forehead? Is it the religious denomination of the artist which has started bothering some of the critics, the agitators, the fascist forces, the self styled censors? ARTIST AS A *'HINDU'* Another giant of an artist -who took the brush from the classes to the common masses-R.K.Laxman, a Hindu in his mortal existence is taken to the task for reinvention of ‘Last supper’. I thought after viewing the cartoon that Lord Jesus would have approved it. The central message of the cartoon is universal message of Christianity and true Roman Catholicism. It all depends on what one reads from the cartoon-there are layers of meaning and interpretation but it is a modern masterpiece. HE would have said after noticing criticism of Laxman-‘ God What if a controversial, non conformist Goan painter Francis Newton Desouza or our own Mario Miranda were to draw that cartoon?. Perhaps a different yardstick would have been used… So what we have now are two unwanted controversies…do these make any real, logical, objective sense, especially to those who are well read in history of religions and art ? 'HINDU ART ' BY A 'CHRISTIAN 'ARTIST Take opposition to Josebab’s paintings. I did not find anything objectionable because I am a serious student of Indian philosophy, art, architecture, vedic and non vedic Hinduism. I had given two public lectures in Marathi at Margao on Vatsyayana’s Kamasutra ( the first ever in history of Goa) in front of a sizeable middle class Goan audience without any controversy. These were organized by Sanskrit Pracharini Sabha, Margao devoted to promotion of world’s oldest and richest language. If nudism in Josebab’s paintings is opposed because it injures the Hindu sentiments and is considered vulgar by those who claim to be the self styled guardians of Hinduism, then by the same yardstick all the aniconic temples of Lord Siva/ Rudra/Mahadeva which have installed the Lingams, his sculptures depicting him as mahayogi (urdhva-retas-one who could reverse the flow of sacred semen) and the whole cult of Matrika or nude mother goddess worship could also attract a ban/opposition. What about plain erotic verses in Kalidas’s Ritusamhar and in Jaideva’s Gitagovindam?. And closer to the headquarters of the radical Hindus-Marathi scholar R.C.Dhere’s classical Marathi monograph –Lajjagauri (the nude goddess)?. Would the constitution of India permit free artistic expressions or promote revisionism? Would the radical Hindu forces also demand ban on procession of Naga sadhus and elaborate description given by Marathi novelist Go.Ni.Dandekar of their strange rituals? Would the radical Hindu forces demand a total ban on sub-continent’s tantric traditions? Having born in an orthodox Hindu Brahmin family, after having studied Sanskrit and original works on Hinduism, I discovered by the time I became a graduate, that my Hinduism is not just a religion, a label or a denomination to me-it is a complex, religious, assimilative, liberal cultural ecosystem. It has no single leader, no single sacred text, neither a founder and it doesn’t get dogmatic about its’ texts. [Goanet] Fwd: Warped Development: GBA and Cansaulim Village Meeting Friday July 30th at 6:00pm
Please post and forward to all concerned Goans! See you all at the Cansaulim Panchayat Hall at 6:30pm on Friday July 30th! *Goa Bachao Abhiyan* * * 77, Defence Colony, Alto Porvorim-Goa E-mail: goabachaoabhi...@gmail.com url: www.savegoa.com ): 9767701245 The Goa Bachao Abhiyan and the Villagers of Cansaulim will hold a meeting with those who are concerned about the type of “development” being carried out across the state while the Government of Goa drags its feet and the Village Panchayats do not address the concerns of the village residents who form their constituency. *The meeting will be held at 6pm on Friday 30th July 2010 at the Village Panchayat Hall, Cansaulim.* While the Gram Sabha of Cansaulim had resolved in 2009 that no multi-dwelling units would be approved by the Village Panchayat without first referring it to the Gram Sabha, construction licences for the same continue to be given even in 2010. There are also constructions licenced in low-lying paddy fields that have been intentionally left fallow. A major issue of the villagers, is the change in the demography of the wards with the advent of multi-storeyed, multi-dwelling buildings amidst the ground level single-unit residences. Any “development” should improve the quality of life for the residents and not create a burden on the existing infrastructure [roads, electricity, water and sanitation being the critical components] and lead to social tension and strife. The meeting will be addressed by the villagers of Cansaulim including Dr. Marconi Correia and Ms. Sheila Gracias and also by representatives of the GBA including its Convener Sabina Martins, Mr. Aravind Bhatikar and Fr. Maverick Fernandes of CSJP. The meeting will seek to find solutions and evolve a concept of development for the village. The Cansaulim villagers are outraged over the fact that the elected Panch members of the Village Panchayat have passed a resolution declaring a perfectly legal resolution adopted by the Gram Sabha as “Null and void”, even though the resolution was passed by following the procedure laid down for Gram Sabha. The villagers have opted to voluntarily restrict constructions in the village at VP3 level of 50 FAR, but the Village Panchayat continues to issue construction licences to buildings at 80 FAR of VP1, contrary to the demand and resolutions of the Gram Sabha available on its own records. The GBA will also release for South Goa its booklet on “Village Development Plan 2010” prepared by the villagers through a workshop held last May at Nachinola VP, in association with the Village Level Committee, elected Village Panchayat body, the Zilla Panchayat member [Aldona-Nachinola-Moira] and facilitated by GBA in association with MAITHRI of Kottayam District-Kerala. The booklet contains the Village Development Plan proposed by the Directorate of Panchayats as per the Goa Panchayati Raj Act, 1994, to be completed by every village panchayat by 01 November each year. The meeting will take note of the Opposition benches taking up in the Legislative Assembly the issue of the delay in the finalisation of Regional Plan 2021 during the monsoon session beginning on 19 July, 2010, to seek an explanation from the Government, specially the TCP Minister, about the inordinate delays that are fostering the destruction of Goa in the interim period. After the initial fervour, the operation of the “Flying Squads” seems to have slipped into a void. The on-the-spot “Stop Work” orders where tree-cutting, hill cutting or land filling has almost come to a standstill. The GBA and the other groups have decided on re-start the protest to bring to the attention of the Goa Government and the Goa Adminsitration that patience has run out among the people of Goa and the delaying tactics will no longer work. The Government seems to have ceased being responsible to the people and there is no alternative but to take more affirmative action. [Goanet] Commission for Social Communications will answer all questions with regards to the Church in Goa
To The Editor Herald Publications Panjim Goa 29 th July 2010 Dear Sir, *KINDLY PUBLISH IN LETTER TO THE EDITOR COLUMN *This is with reference to the article appearing in Herald dtd 28th July captioned as Bishops office under RTI Act . It is really surprising that the Mapuca Legislator Francis D'Souza who is part of the panel should entertain Antonia Michel Abels' requests which are really absurd , insulting and an invasion into the independent and secular functioning of the Church in Goa. The said Antonia Abel has made ridiculous suggestions about the Portuguese laws and culture and customs which we Goans so uniquely have imbibed and follow for centuries together and are very proud of our culture and traditions. Infact it is our unique culture which binds and brings us Goans together no matter what faith or creed we belong to , unlike other states that are constantly experiencing communal riots and tensions instigated by communal outfits and parties. I hope the Mapuca Legislator realises that he also represents a sizeable number of Catholics and other Goans from his constituency and shouldnt give in to mischievous suggestions like that of Antonia just because she maybe his constituent. Instead of directing the Law department he can guide and direct such silly suggestions or even any genuine queiries to the *Commission for Social Communications set up by the Goa Archdiocese*. *Col.Cyril P.D'Souza ( Retd.) * KHH phase 11 Gauravaddo - Calangute Goa Pin : 403516 Tel :08322282881 * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! Re: [Goanet] All Religions for Human Integral Development
People, people For the sake of yourselves. learnt to name/cite sources. There must be no excuse, and no need for any embarrassments, in having to name textual sources even if you know the material inside out, but have not made significant changes to any said text--basically regurgitated it. Reading and comprehending something deeply does not mean that the thought has necessarily taken root in ones consciousness (often takes time, more oft never happens), to the extent that the stream of knowing is part of ones being. Since such is often the case: take some time, step back, and put in ones own words, what makes sense to you from the original--but for good measure still sate a source if its a larger sources, which may involve translations, commentaries, etc.. And for good measure also state in brackets (From: Blah, blah site, or url, etc). As time goes by it may not be necessary to do so--since the absorption will be real and people will respect that--the text will flow directly from ones core. Particularly when it comes to volatile issues and making complex conjectures. But specifics, and original thoughts must be cited. In Modernity citing/naming sources gains one a certain acceptance--that you are person who is aware (not, cosmically); who respects the intelligence of those around. It also spare oneself public admonition. There is enough we all have to deal with in life--why take on more than ones fair share. The same value, would also gain respect from ones own family, and the younger generation--when their elders tell them about the provenance of a thought, or an idea, etc.; that they are fastidious in more things, beyond the quality of fenny, or for that matter--tondak, hooman, or kheer. venantius j pinto * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! [Goanet] Goa's golden sports
I think the most famous Goan football referee was Souza alias Half Crack from Merces. He was well known for his eccentric and dubious refereeing decisions. He was also a starter for Athletic events. There was an instance when the 'AK47' of the Goa Police did not fire for a 100m event at Campal. The athletes took off after the set position. Half Crack ran after the athletes calling them back, and with the AK fortunately pointed towards hell. BC the other memorable referee was the late Simplicio of Majorda. * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! [Goanet] 'Probe Goa home minister's son in Scarlett case'
* 'Probe Goa home minister's son in Scarlett case' * 2010-07-29 14:50:00 Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik's son Roy should be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the death of British teenager Scarlett Keeling, her mother Fiona Mackeown said here Thursday. Speaking to reporters, Mackeown, who is in Goa to depose before a trial court in connection with her daughter's culpable homicide trial, also said that those accused of killing her daughter were still roaming scot-free. 'Many people told me about his (Roy's) involvement. The CBI needs to probe and investigate. They should find out whether he is involved or not,' said Mackeown, who had first accused Roy of being linked to the drug trade in 2008 after her daughter's death. 'My daughter was given narcotics and killed in Anjuna. The existence of the drug nexus is evident from the findings of the Goa police and the death of Scarlett. This nexus cannot survive without political patronage and must be probed till it is stopped,' Mackeown added. Asked if the people responsible for Scarlett's death have gone scot-free, Mackeown said: 'They are still out. They are walking free. Those who are supposed to be in jail are still walking about freely. The police officer who lied to me has been reinstated in service,' She said she may name more suspects in court during her deposition. A resident of Bideford in southwest England, Mackeown said she had full faith in the judicial system but also pointed out that had the case been handed over to the CBI immediately, the investigation would have been more qualitative. 'More evidence could have been available. The delay gave time for the evidence to be destroyed. The initial investigating officer was assisting criminals rather than me. Top leadership took a stand that it was an accident and chose to blame me and Scarlett, rather than criminals for her death,' she said. Two beach shack workers Samson Dsouza and Placido Carvalho have already been arrested and booked for culpable homicide and sexual assault in connection with Scarlett's death. The trial resumes Friday. http://sify.com/news/probe-goa-home-minister-s-son-in-scarlett-case-news-national-kh3oOeehgjh.html -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes. * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! [Goanet] Bicholim locals demand enquiry in pollution caused by chemical factory
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM, JULY 28 Residents of Katarwada, Bicholim Industrial Estate and surrounding areas have demanded enquiry in the pollution caused in the area by a chemical factory. The residents have once again complained of pollution caused by a chemical factory in the area, as earlier, wells were polluted, but in the recent case reported in the area, a cow was seriously burnt due to chemical contact. Speaking to Herald, Aashish Govekar claimed that the chemical factory is in operation without following any environmental rules. “Since last one decade, there has been pollution in the area and our wells have been already polluted due to the chemical mixture and now it is slowly spreading to other areas,” informed Govekar. It may be recalled that in 2001, about 10 wells in the area started giving white water with some foul smell and it was proved that the cause was a chemical factory in the area. Political leaders and government officials, including the then deputy collector, had inspected the site and had assured that the hazardous industry would be stopped, but in vain. “If we voice against the factory, then police and council threatens us. We demand that the government should initiate action against this factory, which is causing pollution,” claimed a resident. When this scribe visited the site, it was noticed that the grass, which is used as a grazing ground by some cows in the area, was burnt because of chemicals. “A cow belonging to Suresh Goverkar, who usually sits in the same field, suffered severe burns due to the chemical reaction. The pollution is of serious nature and the government should look into the matter,” said a local. When contacted, Govekar said some of his cows have got some burns due to chemical reaction and the area is swollen. “It happened last week and we have now treated them. The doctor gave us some medicine and now it is improving,” said Govekar. “It happened after one of the tanks from the chemical factory busted and all the chemical flowed in the area behind the factory,” he added. “Some years ago, about 14 of my cows died, but nothing happened. The officials came and inspected, even the company denied of any such spillage and I had to suffer the loss,” said Govekar. Govekar, who was earlier rewarded for highest dairy farming in the city, told Herald that there was no compensation up from the government even when some newspapers had highlighted the issue. “I am yet to inform the BMC chairman about the matter, but I have communicated about the incident to Councilor Ajit Birje. The government on one side tells everyone to go in for dairy farming and if someone is really into it, they hardly bother to listen to him,” he said. * * * UK STOCKS EXHAUSTED! Re: [Goanet] Celibacy Today
Dear Fr. Ivo, Thank you for giving more details of the text, and providing elucidation, and references. BTW, I have never derided celibacy, and have been consistent about this. Perhaps, I am one of the few on Goanet who has voiced this very openly---considering all aspects of me. I do not feel that being celibate makes people do things, and there is no reason in my mind that a practicing celibate would look to children--in any case. On the contrary, if at all--one may seek a person who is on ones level in Human Development... My concern was in regards the specific use of language--and the full text you provided broadend the context. Thank you. On a lighter note, hopefully you have the beginings of a small paper on the subject. Period! [Goanet] Shuttler's Club Badminton: Double crowns for Govind, Rupchandra
Goa's top shuttler Govind Navelkar continued his winning ways to capture a double crown at the All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Tournament organised by Shuttler's Club at Indoor Stadium, Campal, Panaji. In the Mens singles Finals, Govind smashed his way to a 21-15 , 21-10 victory over Floyd Araujo although Floyd made him sweat and toil in the first set with several long rallies. Later partnering former State Champion Pankaj Naik, the duo went on to win the Mens Doubles event which was undoubtedly one of the best contests of the season. The match was a see saw battle with fortunes fluctuating from one set to the other. The top seeds lost the first set 20-22 but came back strongly to win the next at 21-11. The third set was a neck to neck encounter with neither side willing to give an inch but in the end the reigning champions prevailed over Floyd Araujo and Navneet Nasnodkar to close out the game at 21-19 as the second seeds committed a couple of critical service errors towards the end. Rupchandra Humrasker also eased his way past his opponents to bag a double. He won the Veterans 45 plus event, registering a comfortable 21-13 , 21-17 win over Veteran warhorse Tanaji Sawant while in the Veterans 40 plus singles, he displayed better nerves and stamina to beat Pradosh Silimkhan 21-16 , 21-14 . In the Veteran 45 plus doubles event, the formidable doubles pairing of Tanaji Sawant and P.K. Gupta registered a comprehensive 21-16, 21-14 victory over the surprise package of this season, Rajendra Borkar and Santosh Prabhudesai. [Goanet] UID for Goan Residents, Citizens or Every Individual? Assembly discussion
The issue of UID was raised by Francis D'Souza during question hour. Francis expressed his doubts about the ability of the Registrars who would collect data for the UID. Besides which he wanted to know who would receive the UID, would it be restricted to Goan residents, or Nationals or every individual. This prompted the speaker to quip in Konkani, Soggleank zalear Chowdhury ietele! (My quotes may not be exact but the words were to that effect.). The CM pointed out that Mr. Nandan Nilekani who is heading the UID project envisages a UID for every Indian. Immediately, like a good LoO, Manohar Parrikar pointed out that first the migrants had to be identified along with the illegal emigrants from other neighbouring nations. The interesting point made by him was that in large states like UP, WB, AP, an influx of a few lakh migrants and illegal emigrants hardly makes a dent. But in Goa, even an influx of a thousand or so persons has tremendous effects.
