[Goanet] Nuvem Consumer Forum expresses concern over malaria spread in the village.
- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. - --- Nuvem Civic and Consumer Forum expresses concern over malaria spread in the village. -- The Nuvem Civic and Consumer Forum (NCCF) is distressed at the death of 23 year old youth Neves Barreto of Pateapur Nuvem due to Malaria and has resolved to increase its efforts to control the spread of the vector borne diseases in the village. The NCCF appreciates the quick response of Dr. Soccorro Quadros of PHC Lotulim of calling the Nuvem Panchayat to meet today to chalk out an action plan to curb the spread of the disease. The Consumer Forum has planned to request the Dy.Collector Chairman Salcete Block Committee on Vector Borne Diseases Prevention to call an urgent meeting and the Labour Commissioner to act swiftly against the Labour Contractors for violations at the construction sites of the Mega projects in the village. It maybe noted that over the years the consistent vigilance of the Consumer Forum has resulted in immediate action from Dr. Deepak Kabadi Dy.Director National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP) and the Primary Health Centre. The Forum volunteers have also moved a Gram Sabha resolution requesting an Annual State of the Health Report of Nuvem village from the Health Officer Primary Health Centre Loutolim so that concrete steps can be taken by the Village Panchayat to combat the spread of various diseases in the village. However the Consumer Forum is of the opinion that unless the Village Panchayat and Labour Department acts firmly against the Labour Contractors with regards the non issue of Health Cards to the construction labourers and their regular health check ups, the battle against spread of the vector borne disease will be lost. -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK -- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa -- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mail: *goa...@gmail.com* Visit: *http://goacan.blogspot.com * -- * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] Parrikar does the unpredictable.
As usual, the opposition BJP was giving the Government a hard time during the discussions in the Assembly for appropriations for the Police Department. It was during the voting phase when Parrikar pulled out the rabbit from his hat. He did the unpredictable by offering to withdraw the cut motion on the appropriations in return for a CBI probe in the Drugs-Police-Politician nexus. Predictably, the Government rejected the offer and the opposition walked out. Such an offer has never ever been made in the history of the Goa Legislative Assembly. IMHO, this was a coup for Manohar Parrikar and the BJP. Since the proceedings are being televised, this was widely viewed. What a beating for the ruling party in the eyes of the viewers. -- Tony de Sa. tonydesa at gmail dot com M : +91 9975 162 897 Ph. : +91 832 2470 148 ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] NEWS: Names of foreigners will be deleted from election rolls: Goa CM
Names of foreigners will be deleted from election rolls: Goa CM Published: Wednesday, Jul 28, 2010, 22:50 IST | Updated: Wednesday, Jul 28, 2010, 22:50 IST Place: Panaji | Agency: PTI Panaji: Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat today said that the names of foreigners figuring in the electoral rolls would be deleted. I will ask the chief electoral officer (CEO) to delete all the names of the foreigners in the voting roll, Kamat told the state legislative assembly today. The chief minister was replying to the cut motion moved by the Opposition on the floor of the house. Earlier, BJP legislator Fransisco D’Souza had raised the issue of foreigners' names found on the electoral rolls. The legislator has said that such an act was unlawful and a cause of concern for the security of the state. Kamat said that with the election commission tightening the procedure, no person can enroll at two places on the rolls. He said that the election related migration would cease once the new mechanism gets in place. http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_names-of-foreigners-will-be-deleted-from-election-rolls-goa-cm_1416030 * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] NEWS: Special anti-Maoist cell needed: Goa assembly panel
Special anti-Maoist cell needed: Goa assembly panel 2010-07-29 20:30:00 Almost two months after a leader of an Orissa-based fringe Maoist group was arrested in Goa, a legislative panel has recommended setting up of a special cell to keep tab on Maoist activities in the state. The ad hoc committee on home, chaired by Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar, also said that police needed to keep tabs on activities of labourers and immigrants, employed in the state's burgeoning mining and tourism sectors. 'The committee recommends that the police department create a special cell to keep track of movement of workers and immigrants from areas known to be Naxalite (Maoist) infested,' Parrikar, a former chief minister said. The committee report was tabled in the assembly Thursday. Shambhu Beck, leader of the Maowadi Trishul Manch (MTM) was arrested in May this year, while he was hiding in Goa. Beck, 25, was wanted in Goa for crimes ranging from kidnapping, dacoity, arson and robbery. http://sify.com/news/special-anti-maoist-cell-needed-goa-assembly-panel-news-national-kh3u4ddbgbi.html * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] Germany: In the grip of multiculturalism (Devika Sequeira, DH)
Germany: In the grip of multiculturalism By Devika Sequeira Deccan Herald devikaseque...@gmail.com There are more trees than people in Berlin, our guide tells us. It underscores Germany's increasing concern with the demographic imbalance in a greying society. But on the streets of Berlin, it is the ghosts of Germany's dark past that appear to suffuse the sprawling, beautiful city even at the peak of a very hot summer. Two blocks away from our hotel we pass by the intriguing 'Monument to the murdered Jews of Europe' several times a day. Wedged between East and West Berlin of the cold war days, the maze of 2711 grey slabs conceptualised by US architect Peter Eisenman is both a graveyard of nameless tombstones as well as a play-place for children. Eisenman wanted the Holocaust monument to become an integral part of the everyday life of Berlin after it opened in 2005. To the Germans, it serves as a constant reminder of what should never have happened. The burden of Germany's recent history bears down heavily on its capital. A brooding, slate coloured building that housed the offices of the air ministry during Hitler's regime is used by the finance ministry today. The ruins of Hitler's bunker lie buried not far from the Holocaust memorial. The Berlin Wall But the past has also interwoven itself into the everyday. Like thousands of other tourists we pose before what now remains of the Berlin Wall -- only 2 km of the 43 that once divided Berlin, have been retained. Jostling for space is a group of young, urbane Japanese executing a fashion shoot with a punk-styled model. In Berlin, it is impossible to ignore the psychological imprint the Wall left on its citizens. On the pavement, we are standing either over what was once East or West Berlin. The Wall put up in 1961 came down in 1989. Pavers today mark the original path that once cleaved Berlin in two, so that Germans will never forget. Chancellor Angela Merkel was expected to balance the budget better because she came from the once-deprived East Germany, we are told. By coincidence, we are in Germany at the peak of the World Cup fever and the Eurozone crisis and our hosts attempt to give us a perspective of the economic and political situation. The 90 minutes of the Germany-England match were the only moments of relief Merkel has had in the past eight months, says Florian Gathmann, political editor of Spiegel Online as he outlines the discontent brewing with the affairs of government. But out on the streets, the public mood in Germany seemed unfazed by Eurozone worries and stimulus exit debates that weighed down advisors in the corridors of power. Young people zipped past us with German flags pegged proudly on their cars or to the handle-bars of their cycles. Football fever was everywhere, and for the first time since World War II the Germans seemed to have breached their reticence to display their national colours. What we are seeing is quite unusual, said Sandra Breka, head of the Robert Bosch Foundation. Breka, of Serbian-Croation-Slovenian descent is part of the growing multi-cultural Germany, reflected perhaps most aptly by the young German team. Germany's dream run to the semifinals was cut short by the Spanish Armada. But the new patriotic fervour stirred by its World Cup success with one of the most diverse teams in the competition, is the talk all around the country. In Kreuzberg, home to thousands of Turkish immigrants, Werder Bremen midfielder Mesut Ozil (of Turkish descent), is a hero. The fact Ozil and Sami Khedira (part Tunisian) chose to play for Germany is perhaps the beginning of something new in a country where one-fifth of its population is immigrant. [Goanet] Teacher forced to wear burqa!
There are many who say that women wear burqa on their own free will, and they should be allowed. I hope there is a media campaign about this case, where a woman says that she does not want to wear a burqa. Best wishes U. G. Barad A teacher says no to burqa in a West Bengal Muslim university, isn't allowed to teach Shiv Sahay Singh Jul 29 2010. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/A-teacher-says-no-to-burqa-in-a-West-Benga l-Muslim-university--isn-t-allowed-to-teach/653282 For the past three months, 24-year-old Sirin Middya has not been able to hold her classes at West Bengal's first Muslim university. While the guidelines at Aliah University in Kolkata don't stipulate the same, the students' union has demanded that Middya can teach but only in burqa. Middya was appointed a guest lecturer at the university in March this year and got the union diktat in the second week of April. I was told that I would not be allowed to attend college if I did not agree to come in a burqa. The University Grants Commission does not prescribe any such dress code and even the university does not have a dress code. But the most unfortunate part is that students are forcing us to wear burqa, Middya told The Indian Express. According to her, she has no issues with wearing a burqa - but if she dons one; it would be of her own free will. * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] POOR CHRISTIANS of INDIA and HINDUTVAWADIS - CLERGY - MISSIONARIES.....
Dear Goanetters The Indian Government has pumped in billions of tax payers money to fight Terrorists, Jihadis, Maoists, Naxalites, North-East Rebels but nothing is being done to fight the Hindutvawadis ( RSS, VHP, BAJRANGDAL, SHIVSENA, etc.) why this hypocricy.. The Hindutvawadis are masquerading as Hindu cultural groups when the fact is whatever the Hindutvawadis are doing is based on the Manuals of Nazism. Just as for the Nazis, the Jews were a great threat, so the Hindutvawadis considers the Muslims, Christians, Dalits, Tribals, Socialists, Communists and modern Hindus a great threat. The Hindutvawadis definition of Nation, is not acceptable. It is monocultural negating other religions and people. The struggle between the Brahminical forces under the disguise of Hindu nationalism on the one hand and the dream of an egalitarian, pluralistic and democratic Indian State and society on the other hand, will determine the direction and the destiny of the Indian State and society. The Hindutvawadis have a wide network in cities and towns of India. Why is it that the Hindutvawadis are not attacking Slumlords, land mafia, corrupt ward officers in Muncipalities. Many Politicians and IAS/IPS officers have accumulated lot of wealth through corrupt activities. Why is it that the Hindutvawadis are not attacking corrupt politicians and corrupt ias/ips officers. Many farmers and tribals have lost their land livelihood due to the land acquisition policy. Why is it that the Hindutvawadis are not opposing the Land acquisition policy. In Kandhmal the Maoists gunned down one Hindu Swami and took full responsibility for killing of the swami. But instead of attacking the Maoists the Hindutvawadis attacked Christians. Would the Hindutvawadis dare to attack the Christians if like the Maoists the Christians were also armed with guns and bombs. Just because the attacks on christians and vanalization of churches in orissa, karnataka, maharashtra, madhya pradesh, etc has stopped or subsidized that does not mean the Christians should rejoice. After the calm there will be storm.. But blaming the Hindutvawadis for all the problems that Christians face in India will not be justified because the Christian missionaries due to their fraudulent conversion activities are giving an opportunity to the Hindutvawadis to attack Christians. How nice it would have been if the Christian Missionaries had utilized their foreign funds for the benefit of poor-christians instead of utilizing the foreign funds to serve poor-non christians with an intent of fraudulently converting them. How nice it would have been if the Clergy had utilized the church assets/resources/properties for the benefit of poor christian parishioners instead of misusing church assets/resources/properties. How nice it would have been if Christian schools/colleges/institutions had reserved 30% seats for poor Christians. How nice it would have been if Christian Hospitals Charitable Institutions had served poor christians. Majority of the Christians in India are poor but nobody cares for Poor Christians. May God help poor christians in India. [Goanet] The Lost Supper - Views from Different People
Here are the Views from Different People who participated in the awareness campaign I moderated to demand apology from the Times of India Cartoon The Lost Supper on Page 18 of July 25. Hope it will be useful for you to go through. Allwyn Fernandes: I received several messages today on last night's post on the Lost Supper. All except one felt we should not over-react, rather that we should be happy that the Common Man represented Christ in a world of politicians huffing and puffing and nothing nothing in whose name they claimed to speak. Noella Gama to Allwyn: How correctly the 'Table of Hope' that you have depicts Jesus and the Heart of God. We Catholics need to sure change our mindset from the religious attitude allows for 'hurt sentiments'. If Jesus had to be bothered about his sentiments when he went to the Cross you and I would not know or receive salvation. We just need to go about reaching out to the lost. Therese Almeida to Allwyn: Thank you for giving people the right perspective. In today's world everything gets distorted and sensible people react in a stupid way. Regards and continue saying it like it is, Virginia to Allwyn: One of my parishioners - similar in mindset to Ancy jumped up also to write to various leaders in Maharashtra and the TOI about the cartoon. I wanted to write to you, but since you were silent on the issue, I thought it best to keep quiet (I was travelling). He forwarded it to me and I berated him for taking up any and every thing he saw to be an issue. I think there are legion of these men who are in retirement and do not know what to do with themselves and from their limited knowledge think they are doing a great service to the Church by taking up issues like these. I pointed out that the cartoon uses the scene of a Christian painting to depict an issue in the country, so it is not desecrating the faith. On the contrary, as you point out, Jesus is probably happy that they use a truth that he left us with to show that people are going without food in the country, while the so called leaders are looking on, blind to the problem. In fact I see that theological knowledge is so necessary for the lay person so that they can really shout about issues that Jesus would want us to shout about. Denzil Rego to Dolphy (BCS): why do we pick up the non-consequential issues? this is pure jingo-ism the pic was very apt to the political situation today by doing this we are only playing into the hands acolytes of the powers that be Albert DeSouza to Iona Saldanha: Iona, Mr.Allwyn Fernandes refuses to see the point that The Last Supper is not something to be trifled with or trivialised. It is a solemn and sacred event for the average Catholioc/Christian.The first impression that I got was that the artist was trying to have some fun at the expense of the Christian. He would not dare to do it with any other community particularly those who are aggressive and known for their militancy. Catholics are a peace loving people and so an easy target. But there are limits to our patience and this was something I least of all expected with a responsible newspaper like The Times of India. I have not seen the painting or picture that he has at home and can not comment on its correctness. Also if others endorse this sort of humour it does not mean that it is alright. The cartoon is certainly in bad taste and most Christians and even non Christians will agree. Of course Mr.Allwyn Fernandes is entitled to his views. I sent a letter to The TOI on Sunday itself protesting against the cartoon. Regards Albert Below are Some of the comments people sent to Ancy S DSouza, Paladka Sarita D'Souza: Cannot believe that TOI could stoop so low and publish this. Every christian should agitate and raise their voice against this. Don't expect them to sacrifice their lives like the Apostles instead they will expect you to sacrifice your life for them. and there is no need to give a rope to RK Laxman as it is he is suffering in the hospital and awaiting death. But I doubt if this is his cartoon ? Every Catholic should ban TOI and stop buying this newspaper. Demand for Apology is right. Jessie Monteiro: Just because Christians are peace loving and keeping quiet the person has gone ahead to print this.. instead of this what if some one had to print something about Hindu's or Muslims they would hv kept quiet??? I feel every Christian should stop reading TOI. every drunkard in a movie is a Christian as if others dont drink... and every bad scene act to do they find only Christian names .. really sick minded people... Dolphy DSouza (BCS): The Bombay Catholic Sabha [BCS] were shocked to see the ridiculing of the Last Supper scene in article entitled Lost Supper on the rising food prices etc in the Times of India on Page 18 of July 25. This depiction is not in good taste as it hurts the sentiments of Christians for whom this scene is of much value, significance and respect, and hence cannot be used in satire

July 30, 07.2010. SUBJ: *'BUILDER-POLITICIAN-NEXUS:* To My all dear Goans, IT IS HIGH TIME THAT ALL GOANS STOOD UP FOR THEIR BASIC RIGHTS AS WELL THER RIGHTS BEING CITIZENS OF THIS LAND. It is very saddening to read that young virgin villages in Goa are BEEN destroyed permanently by the ever Powerful Nexux of Builder-Polician and the Government hand in glove. All for their own 'Selfish motives and Gains, which is very, very saddening as well upsetting the Goans to see Goa wither away to Sychopants.. It is also very sad to note that there is no much unity among the Goans to understand the basics of this plight and unitedely fight this plague and also the Corruptions of the so called Guardians of the Law. GOA IS FOR GOANS and ALL GOANS ARE FOR GOA Must be the present Cry of the Goans, Otherwise all Goans will fall like the Goliath to the sling of David. Today, Goa depends for its livelihood and its economy on Tourism and if the Goans unitedly fight to preserve and concentrate to save Goa then this Natural Beauty of Goa will sonn disapper into the Blue forever. So Goans, my sincere plea and request try to come forward with love and understanding the Reality what is happening now there and rebel against this corrupted 'Nexus between the Builders- and the Policians, only then will Goa be able to stand Test of Time and forever move forward with its glory and also beauty for ever to behold. One more fact to state that if we allow any Tom, Dick and Harry to wander into Goa in Search of livelihood then what will come about of the original inhabitants of Goa??? [Goanet] NEWS: 64th Santosh Trophy: Goa's Cavin Lobo Snatches Late Winner Against Karnataka
64th Santosh Trophy: Goa's Cavin Lobo Snatches Late Winner Against Karnataka Goa get the desired head-start by beating Karnataka with an injury-time strike... By Anselm Noronha 29-Jul-2010 6:20:00 PM Goa screamed in a late arrival in the first Quarter-Finals of the ongoing 64th Santosh Trophy when substitute Cavin Lobo came in and completed the job, giving his team a winning start, on Thursday. The weather was in a good mood at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salk Lake artificial turf ground, Kolkata. It drizzled a bit before the match. -It appeared as if both teams were studying each other before letting their game flow and it seemed the sides almost forgot that they have to score as well. The slow-paced match saw a stale first 45 minutes. The substitution of Cavin Lobo in place of Milagres Gonsalves set a new face to the match in the second half. Goa coach Mariano Dias was a pleased man with the result. While talking to Goal.com in the post match comments session, Dias seemed fairly content with the result. The boys played well from the beginning. The first 20 minutes were very slow. The second half was fast. We had lots of opportunities to score. The ball even hit the pole once and bounced back but we won in the end. The first win is always important as it lifts the confidence of the boys, he said. Karnataka and Goa will have their next matches versus Services (3:30 pm start) and Punjab (6:00 pm start) respectively, at the YBK stadium in Kolkata on July 31. http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/2290/santosh-trophy/2010/07/29/2047262/64th-santosh-trophy-goas-cavin-lobo-snatches-late-winner-against- * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] Goa's golden sports
Dear Bernado, I always like reading these gems of Goanity/Goan Being, that you put on Goanet. More particularly, I appreciate the details you remember about the subject/objects that you care to share. There was an instance when the 'AK47' of the Goa Police did not fire for a 100m event at Campal. The athletes took off after the set position. Half Crack ran after the athletes calling them back, and with the AK fortunately pointed towards hell. BC the other memorable referee was the late Simplicio of Majorda. [Goanet] The Lost Supper
In 1480s i.e. almost fifteen centuries after Jesus had Last Supper with His Disciples, the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci painted the world famous Supper on the wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. I do not believe that in times when Jesus lived , his disciples could have been dressed in such finery, not to mention the embroidered table cloth etc. etc. So it may not be quite right to consider this painting as a covenant of our good faith. * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] Life's Like That
LIFE’S LIKE THAT By: Bennet Paes “Never judge a book by its cover” say wise men out of experience. However, that piece of advice may be right for a bookshop browser, but my concept was a kind of departure from that wisdom. “Pride and Prejudice”, acclaimed the world over as a fictional masterpiece by one of the most celebrated British novelists, Jane Austen, was a literary prescription for freshmen in most Indian Universities in the 1950’s. So I was left with no choice but to lump it, whether I liked it or not. First of all, the book’s cover did not impress me, and what followed was even worse. The story revolved around a mind-boggling web of inter-relationships among the18th century English gentry, which seemed so distant both in colour and custom from an age I grew up in. Moreover, Ms Austen’s romantic comedy, heavily punctuated by ‘indirect speech’ did not exactly jell with my own notion of humour, or the manner to be expressed it in. The only saving grace though, was the plot’s central player, Elizabeth Bennet whose last name the author chose to spell the same way as my first. Strange enough for an English family to have that name ending with a single ‘t’. However, despite this silver lining, so as to speak, an eerie feeling said I was indeed heading for a ‘Waterloo’. So a change became necessary, just as it was for Jane Austen herself. She had earlier suggested to title her work as “My First Impressions” . She changed it, and it worked. It got her the world’s applause, except mine. It took me six years and three Universities to reach to the last page of that novel, and finally I never even got there. In fact, this ‘Bennet’ deserved to be on the pages of another book – The Guinness Book of World Records. Later on, having wandered about aimlessly in the company of the so-called (Goan) freedom fighters in Bombay, someone else happened to come into my life. Freedom, to this middle-aged Goan meant relief from the Bombay grind that fetched him little in return. But luckily, a visa was in hand which was to lift him soon to a greener pasture out of India. He was kind by nature and promised he would love to have me for company after he got there. I was in raptures, not even knowing where he would take me. But deep inside, I felt that even Timbuktu would do, so long as I got out of sight of a fuming father. My father had dug deep into his pockets, only to find his son squander it all away, college- hopping. Eventually I found myself on board s.s.Dara. The ship was set to sail from Bombay to the Iraqi port of Basra, calling at six others en route. It was in mid-December, 1958. The visa stamped on my Portuguese passport was for Kuwait – then, a small desert sheikdom under British protection, and with an equally small native population of Bedouins and their ruling families. But in contrast, it had huge deposits of crude oil, literally oozing out of their ‘ghutrahs’ . In Arabic these stand for a headgear that is more prominently worn by Gulf Arabs to protect their tops from the blistering desert conditions. The black gold, however, had not yet trickled down to make Kuwait a sea-worthy port. Like some others in the Gulf, it did not have a harbour. So ships offloaded cargo and passengers in mid-stream, and were transported to shore precariously huddled in dhows built in Malabar. I spent nine memorable days on the ‘Dara’. The chief steward of the ship was a friend from a neighbouring village. He was in his fifties, but quite fit to face the fury of the seas. He said he had been on the job for the better half of his adult life. He was also gracious enough to upgrade me from deck-class accommodation, and host me right in his cabin all the way to Kuwait. A quick drink each day before early dinners and a cursory glance at his pretty daughter’s photograph, were added for my comfort. The barber came in to shave the chief early mornings, and insisted that he run the razor on me as well. I obliged out of courtesy, although the few strands of hair on my chin hardly justified the barber’s attention. Some of the deck hands below were also well known to me. The barman, in particular, happened to be from my own village, so naturally I was in for a swig on the side, secretly though, so as to be out of his boss’ reach. Apart from this slight digression, discipline was seen to be an exemplary feature among the entire crew. The British officers in command saw that it was observed to the hilt. Their ‘raj’ might have closed shop on the mainland, but their shipping line, “B.I” in short, hadn’t yet snapped its umbilical cord to the sub-continent. It’s ships plied all round India’s waterways, leading up to all of the four compass points on earth. Finally, the time came for my journey’s end, and to say goodbye to all those who had so kindly entertained me while on board. A dhow was seen tossing about, down below on the port side of the

Re: [Goanet] Cansaulim GBA meet - Report
30th. July was a raining cats and dogs day. I had the Mandovi Hotel Book Release function of Dr. Jose Pereira to attend. But I sacrificed the same to be present at the far removed Cansaulim GBA meet because of two reasons:- One being that I had accepted the email invitation by Roger D'Souza to be present at the Cansaulim GBA meet , and two, because I had an unpleasant conversation with Mathany Saldanha the previous evening when he had told me that he will never be around where GBA is. I wanted to defy him, Cansaulim being his home port/fort. I and Dr. Dumo ( President GSRP) were one of the early birds to arrive at the Cansaulim panchayat hall. It was our pleasure to meet with Orlando D'Silva, the anti-Carmona Mega Project leader and many other charismatic activist leaders including Ms. Diana Pinto of police brutality at the Secretariat, Porvorim, not too long ago. It was a pleasure hearing from her commendations for standing up to the HJS at XCHR, Porvorim. The meet started late at around past 7 p.m. Had enough time to take some shots, listen to the encouraging 'welcome speech' by Ms. Maria Mecla D'Silva, who in short, gave the gist of what was ailing our Goa and its indifferent peoples. Next was the wholesome and interesting address by Dr. Marconi Correia. He took the audience on a horrible ride of what is happening to niz-goenkars like him, soon to be strangers in their own birth place which is also the birth place of T.B. Cunha. The 5 minutes lights outing gave me the opportunity to approach Dr. Marconi and present to him the printed file of GSRP's Presentation. Naturally, he commented that he had read about the Dr. Oscar Rebello vis a vis GSRP episode on the newspapers. It was again, a pleasure to sit besides Ms. Maria Mecla D'Silva and hand over to her copies of my pet project The Panel System of Elections of Panchayats and Municipal Councils which 6 page article is yet to be publicized and which forms the core for good governance at the grass-roots levels, indifferent to 'partisan' politics which has made the entire 'people's movement towards self-governance rotten to the core thro' partisan political interference and invasion. Had to leave early, while Mr. Aravind Bhatikar was at the mike. Fr. Maverick Fernandes of CSJP whose presense was anxiously awaited had not turned up yet. The experience was nevertheless, most exhilarating, thanks to Roger D'Souza. Cheers floriano goasuraj 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org for expanded scrolling party presentation on the home page. Worth considering on the other hand: I believe it was Pavan K. Varma mentioning in one of his books, that it was the upper classes and elites who wanted higher education (specialized, and subsidized) for their kids--rather than primary education for all, and presumably pushed Nehru in that direction. Some say that Nehru's hand was forced. And the UCs were also not too keen on the possibility of India's doing away or marginalizing English. English had got them a lot of dividends (babus et al) and they were not too keen on any possibility of remote parity with lesser haves, and have nots, etc. Needless to add, as with anything many people and families benefited--and continue to. Perhaps various political party strategy planners, are more than aware of the splendid protest tactics of Jose Bove's, and others. But those tactics have deeper reverberations 'neath them. Not sure, as in in the European cases, whether in India it was the farmers themselves dumping their milk, thereby making a choice to be affected directly in the process of doing so(making a political statement), instead of the milk of many small dairy farmers (or some big ones) being spilled against their will (basically no choice) for someone else' strategy/agenda. venantius j pinto From: John Gomes johnericgo...@yahoo.com To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest, Vol 5, Issue 795 (Nudism..Dr Kamat) --- On Thu, 29/7/10, goanet-requ...@lists.goanet.org goanet-requ...@lists.goanet.org ? Re: [Goanet] Gandhi God-Kings
That's my point. The IIT-ian education was, and still is, subsidised to the nth degree! It is creating skills that prop up US technology and industry. (Nothing wrong with that perhaps, except when it translates into scorn for things Indian.) As for Nehru's role in building these institutions, it cannot be denied, whatever may be our political biases. For instance: http://hinduonnet.com/fline/fl2003/stories/20030214007506500.htm PS: The arguments below are confused. It's the IITians (like Rajan) who got the subsidies from the impoverished Indian masses or whoever. The vision, or lack of it, is a wholly separate issue. Re: [Goanet] UID for Goan Residents
You can see below a distortion of my argument to prop up unsustainable logic. I'm talking specifically about the attempt to divide Muslims into good Goan Muslims and bad migrant Muslims. No prize for guessing where this ingenuous argument comes from! You can find examples of this here: http://www.goanews.com/news_disp.php?newsid=128 http://www.colaco.net/1/TGFCommunalRiots.htm http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg09023.html and many other places since this hybrid of communalism-regional chauvinism (specifically focussed on the Muslim) was first floated into the market. FN PS: Bias against the outsider is not mainly communal at this point of time, though it could be given such a twist, as done in Assam, for instance. Re: [Goanet] All Religions for Human Integral Development
Hi Venatius, I read your recent interesting post on this thread (I think) requesting references. Your's has been a POLITE and WELL ARTICULATED article making the case to provide references in posts. So I extend you the courtesy of a polite response in requesting you to consider the following points. 1. Writing a response to a post on goanet (or in a blog) is like writing a letter-to-the-editor. By-and-large, do you see any references in letters to-the-editor published in Goan, Indian or international newspapers and magazines? 2. Do you see references in original articles published in weekly magazines - Time, Newsweek, USA and World Report, etc; or daily or weekly newspapers like New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, etc.? 3. Even in specialized publications like Financial Times or throw-a-way (but widely read) economic, scientific, medical magazines one (mostly) does not see references or sources attached to articles. 4. It is fair for someone to REQUEST a reference to a very specific fact / data in any article. 5. I think the onus of providing references rests on the one who takes an issue with what is posted; and thus uses verified / back-up published data to back-up their critique. This is the opposite of what we see on goanet. 6. Most important in Goa-related issues! Does providing a reference, from a biased or poorly informed source, somehow convert an opinion into a fact? Far too many people hide behind references. 7. Even in specialized news, an opinion and facts from an expert is not a certainty. Look at the number of stock or mutual fund picks from stock market gurus; that are proved false after some time. Likely you know the experiment that stock-picks from a dart thrown by a monkey yielded better economic gains that stock-picks from widely-recognized multiple experts. 8. Until some time ago, goanet was a home to a poster who inundated us with posts, that were accompanied with a pant-load of references. :=)) I do not think there were many converts to his point of view. I am certain you know the following and goanetters have read this, since I previously posted it. For a scientific investigation, the best sources are form an eye-witness account (chronicler), or an unbiased observer, who documented the facts in real-time. In case of medical science we call it prospective trials / observations compared to retrospective study. One should also seek corroborative accounts / conclusions from MULTIPLE sources based on INDEPENDENT data of cause and effect. This is as opposed to conclusions based on one person's opinion, which may be biased or poorly informed; which is then referenced and quoted / repeated by other authors in their written articles, books, PhD thesis, fictional novels, and web-pages. Some of Goa's accounts come from individuals who resided thousand of miles away in Lisbon or currently in other capitals of Europe. These accounts, at best, are based on archived reports and documents. But we know that written reports from those-on-the-ground are often embellished for higher-ups; and in the case of colonial Goa for masters thousands of miles away. Not too long ago, I read a Goa-related thesis of a PhD student; where novels were used a (factual) references to back-up the conclusions. Thank you and other goanetters for allowing me to share my thoughts. [Goanet] Air India Crash of the 60s *update*
Just heard on the radio (www.cbc.ca/asithappens) that a research student Ms.Cowan from U of Dundee found letters and a few other items while researching (I didn't catch what) at Mount Mont Blanc in the Swiss Alps. She is looking to get in touch with some families who lost loved once in order to give the found letters, perhaps other items. I remember from the old days how the news of the crash was receivedwith horror and shock. There was I think someone from the Rebello family of Chicalim who was on his way to Europe who dies in the crash. Not sure there were other Goans (perhaps some staff). Do take a listen (the program was aired July 30th and will be available for download shortly). * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa. [Goanet] FW: Subsidised Indian Education and Big Bucks in the USA
I'm, new to this list but dear Frederick Noronha, whoever you are, Namaskaar! I also had a subsidised education at another excellent Indian Insitution - and I could not agree more with your comments. Indians abroad secretly look down on all things Indian. They whiz in and out for their 'subsidised' (by their poorer but generous Indian relatives) Indian holiday, give a few paise to church roofs and schools and vanish again asap to their McMansions this side of the hemisphere - where they generally look down on their fellow NRIndians also - and rarely stand up for/with them. I am a Mangalorean who recently joined this list at the urging of one of my Goan friends and I'm having a ball so far... The Mangalorean lists are terribly boring and full of church affairs and tirades against the New York Times. It is much more acerbic fun here. I even understand all the Konkani humor and writing and even the references to Caju Feni (which is regularly smuggled into and available in Mangalore). No, you may not call me a Ghati. In Mangalore we speak of ghatagar - generally coffee planters in the ghats with more money than sense. FN -profuse thanks also for making me smile this dreary Friday with: ?Joao observes: Interesting piece, Dr. Barad. Maybe the Muslims fanatics and the Hindu fanatics can get together and create a new religion. Best wishes, Joao, Any particular reason for depriving Christian fanatics (and others too, including 'secular fanatics') from joining hands in the creation of this potential, new religion? Now, isn't that being unfair? FN * * * Encounter hints (and more) of the Goan life in Zanzibar, Poona, Mombasa, Basra, Dubai, and even Nuvem and Colva, Sanvordem and colonial Goa.
