[Goanet-News] Pro Musica's Young Goan Talents...
Pro Musica recently presented ‘Young Goan Talents’ - a Western Classical concert - on Sunday, 22nd August at 6.30 p.m. at the St. Inez church, St. Inez, Panaji. This concert was the third in a continuing series with this edition being dedicated to the late Mr. Eric Menezes, the ex President and co-founder of Pro Musica. * * * THE PERFORMERS WERE: Piano – Gisela Pereira, Nicole Alvares, Rahul Mascarenhas, Ingrid Nazareth. Violin – Chernoll Mendonca, Dwayne Fernandes, Sancha Pereira. Voice – Karla de Sousa, Chriselle Mendonca. Flute – Valerie Menezes. Guitar – Myron Mascarenhas. This concert was put together by Margarida Miranda and members of Pro Musica and included some of Miranda’s pupils plus students of Pheroze Mistri, Goretti Pinheiro, Juliana de Sa, Susan Badyari, Schubert Cotta and Delia Varga. Three of the performers are also members of the Goa State Symphony Orchestra. Works performed were by the composers Bach, Handel, Boccherini, Chopin, Schumann, Cesar Franck, Wieniawski, St. Saens, Sarasate, Albeniz and Poulenc. Pro Musica is a non-profit music society formed in the year 2003 by Eric Menezes, Margarida Miranda and Maria Fernanda Souza as a need was felt for an organization to plan and co-ordinate events and activities for the promotion of Western Classical music in Goa, which was actually popular since long. Other members also joined in to lend support in helping realize its aims that include encouraging upcoming and promising local musical talent, providing exposure and just the joy of experiencing good music. HERE'S WHAT DAN DRISCOLL law...@dataone.in wrote about the event: Just back from the Pro Musica Memorial for late Eric Menezes, compered by his genial brother Les. It was an especially pleasant event, with performances by young student musicians. As at Cana, they saved the best until the last. A young lady violinist by name Maria Sancha Pereira did Pablo de Sarasate (Introduction et Tarantelle) with the kind of verve that is (for me at least) a sure indication of real musical and performing talent. She was called back for Encore, and I missed the actual title---but it had the ring of 'The Orange Blossom Special'---suggesting that her potential is just not for Baroque Romantic Period European Classical only, but for world-class Jazz and Contemporary. I think that someday she will be a STAR. I will not pretend to expertise in the field, but would suggest that if a good Scholarship Fund is not already in the making for this girl we should see to it that a move is made in that direction---and before too long. [Goanet] Attacks on Shristians in Karnataka
JC: 1] http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg44022.html Sun, 22 Mar 2009 I consider hindutva (ideology) to be the GREATEST threat we as a nation are facing today. Gujarat happened because of hindutva. Orissa happened because of hindutva. Karnataka is happening because of hindutva. GOA is not too far off. [2] http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-February/173414.html Tues Feb 3 2009 Karnataka - the new bastion of Hindu intolerance. GOA is next on the radar of these forces as the gathering of hindutva forces at Panjim showed last month. [3] http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-January/172299.html Mon Jan 5 2009 Hear ye all men and women!!! Next time any hindutvawadi GOON attacks you or tries to burn your home or property or attempts to rape a member of your family, please remember to call for at least two independent witnesses, preferably not belonging to your religion. Response: As I expected, JC has been unable to substantiate any of his allegations, but has gone on to dance the fugdi (with due respects to FN') or play kabbadi, besides indulging in his normal and usual habit and trademark of throwing in some abuses and insults in between. To take the first two points made by him, maybe the happenings in Gujarat, Orissa and Karnataka were exaggerations for him but certainly not to the rest of us as the various Commissions of Inquiry, Reports of the Human Rights Commissions, Minorities Commissions, rulings of the Supreme Court etc. have confirmed. This is what Jawaharlal Nehru had to say in 1963: “The danger to India, mark you, is not communism, it is Hindu right-wing communalism.” AG Noorani) Frontline April 11-24, 2009. As I predicted correctly, Goa was witness to 2 bomb blasts during Diwali last year. Had the bomb planters not not been traced, certain parts of Goa would have gone up in flames. The article reported in the Outlook magazine was dead on target. Regarding the third point, JC should read the context in which it was written. Santosh had cast doubts over the versions of the victims of hindutva violence in Orissa which was reported in the media. He said that every incident should be corroborated by at least two indepenent witnesses. My reply which was said in a sarcastic vein should be read in this light. In any case, I do not see any exaggeration in it. The cardinal mistakes that JC makes are as under: 1. he lets personal prejudice to cloud his judgement. 2. being away from India for so long, he has lost touch with reality in India. 3. he tries his best to prove he is a loyal and faithful acolyte and sidekick. 4. he is unable to distinguish the difference between 'hindu' (religion) and 'hindutva' (ideology) 5. he makes the mistake of considering dissemination of information of hindutva violence reported in the national media by mainstream newspapers and magzines synonymous with 'anti-hindu frenzy'. If I had to scan the Goanet archives, I will be able to cull out at least half a dozen statements made by JC which could be considered as downright communal and anti-hindu. However, that is another story and I do not have the time for it. I do not believe that he will ever be able to substantiate his allegations, for there are none. I also do not expect him to admit his failure and apologise for that would be expecting too much of him and out of character. The best thing to do under the circumstances is to leave him alone as I have been doing in the past and get on with better things. He is free to have the last word on this thread - abuses, insults, ridicule, last wordism, personal attacks all included. With my best wishes, Marshall . .
[Goanet] GOA'S DESTRUCTION IN THIRD STAGE
(An opinion forwarded to Herald on 28/8/2010. AN OPINION DELAYED IS AN OPINION DENIED) The recent proposal to carve out a third district for Goa is nothing new. Such a ridiculous proposal was first heard of under the NDA rule in 2002. It is nothing but the British tactic of 'divide and rule'. The larger plan seems to be aimed at administratively reducing the entire State of Goa to just three city corporations and thereby do away with the Village Panchayats. Just like Mahatma Gandhi believed that India is in its villages, Goa too is in its villages. Destroying the villages of Goa is about destroying Goa. This latest proposal for a third district only manifests the government's intentions for rapidly urbanising Goa's villages, by destroying agriculture lands, forests, orchards and constructing mega housing projects to accomodate the huge influx of migrants in every nook and corner of the State, with the tacit support from all the national political parties that only shed crocodile tears on the plight of goans. The ultimate design is to minimise goan political influence, erase the cultural identity and destroy the sustainable livelihood options of the goan people and ultimately enslave them into being arm-twisted by the union government. The merger into Maharashtra, which could not be achieved after liberation by several freedom fighters and MGP, is only being forwarded now in a round-about manner. It needs to be remembered that in 1967 the Indian Government had no choice but to prevent any dissent in Goa by winning over the hearts and minds of the goan people because of the pending dispute of Goa's annexation in the U.N. That explains the opinion poll. As long as goans do not understand the larger issues involved in the various struggles of Adivasis and the North East people, they are doomed. Those struggles are not just about geographical and political history. What is being done to Goa is also being attempted in those regions. There is no underlying intention of those people to secede from the Indian State as is being projected, but theirs is a struggle to safeguard their social, cultural and political identity. The recent propaganda by some politicians in the Congress party, that Pt. Nehru would have granted special status to Goa at the time of liberation had it been asked for then, is nothing but rubbish. It is like expecting a new born child to ask it's parents to invest in security deposits that will be needed for the future. If the Congress can negotiate a consensus among political parties to approve a controversial Nuclear Bill, what prevents the Congress party from celebrating Pt. Nehru's love for goans by granting 'Special Status' even now? Does Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi not love Goa? And for that matter do not many in the BJP, NCP and CPI also love Goa and it's culture? Goans should not be surprised that like in the case of Belgaum, voices will soon be raised to demand it's merger into Maharashtra or Karnataka. ' Vishal Gomantak' sounds familiar, is'nt it? The much hyped development and administrative realignment of Goa is all about killing goans softly, and nothing else. Soter D'Souza Socorro

[Goanet] WHY CHRISTIANS ? and NOT MUSLIMS SIKHS
Why the Christians? Have the Hindus run out of Muslims and Sikhs, that a small and insignificant minority should be threatened, attacked, burned at will by right wing Hindutva forces? This may sound strange, but in a real sense that the saffron mob has in deed — if not in words — run out of options. This is why they have now turned against Christians. They are the last soft target. The Sikhs set the retaliation game in motion. They hit out, often randomly, at designated targets making it known to Hindu sectarians that taking on a Sikh will not be a picnic any longer. This stopped further attacks against the sikhs. The Muslims picked up this lead and set their own pace by orchestrating the Mumbai blasts of 1993, and several after that in quick succession. So the Muslims can no longer be hunted down either for casual Hindu amusement. This only leaves the Christians. It must be borne in mind that Hindutva activists are at their predacious best when the kill is easy and their own safety assured in advance. This is why where Christians are in sizable numbers, such as in Nagaland, Kerala or even Goa, Hindutva sectarians dare not touch them. Instead they turn to areas like the Dangs in Gujarat or Kandmahal in Orissa where Christians are scattered and isolated. In these places it is easy to kill without the fear of being killed. Hindu extremist parties and organizations, all the way to the BJP, can encourage, condone and organize mobs to kill for Hindutva, but none of them is willing to die for it. Muslim terrorism in India has nothing to do with Al Qaeda, Taliban, Palestine, or even Iraq. These terrorists are home bred and are direct outcomes of Babri Masjid and Godhra. Why don't the Hindutva activists go to Nagaland or somewhere else where Christians are in a majority ? Why is it that the Hindutva activists are active only where their safety is guaranteed like BJP ruled states ? In places where there is no administrative encouragement, sanction or connivance, Hindutva activists, of whatever description, dare not strike any minority community. Wherever Hindutva presence is built into the state administrative system, saffron forces are assured that every ethnic attack will be like a picnic. When it comes to linguistic and caste wars there is social science involved as jobs are to be won or lost on these grounds. But when Muslims or Christians are killed, nobody wants their income or livelihood. They are attacked only to make Hindutva organizations look good, and nothing else. This is why, in such contexts, social science of any kind is irrelevant. Mark D'souza Bombay.
Re: [Goanet] TAG to support Non-Commercial Tiatr Troupes - Comment suggestion
Update: I got a mail confirming that KA pays 80% of the gate receipts and not 50% as stated (which I think I got from tiatrist themselves). With 80% payout, it comes to about 4,000 more in the stated example. In another news item in today's TOI, it was said professional Tiatrist/group got 75% of the gate receipts too (First popular tiatr festival by TAG Feb.2010). Which means they got another 25,000+ if the show was houseful, I know most of them were full. Margao Pai Tiatrist Hall Capacity is around 1150 and the tickets were priced at Rs.30 Looks like the partipating groups got over 50,000 and the winners got upto 70,000

Re: [Goanet] Attacks on Shristians in Karnataka
So, the Marshall Mendonza who (possibly) believes that it is OK to propagate the '50 crores/day' - even though he knew that the figure was a gross exaggeration of the truth AND who specialises in posting ONLY anti-Hindu news items, is now implying that the following are not exaggerations i.e. that a: in 2009, hindutva (ideology) and not terrorism a la the Mumbai-attack was the GREATEST threat India faced as a nation and that Goa was not too far off. He probably believes that the Vasco church to was also bombed by Hindutva elements. ref [1] http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg44022.html Sun, 22 Mar 2009 b: He (obviously) has evidence to support his implication that Goan Hindus and Catholics never did, do not and never will get on as one people, and that they do not have sense. No wonder he says that GOA is next on the radar of these forces of Hindu intolerance. He also uses the gathering of Hindus in Goa (or as he states 'Hindutva forces in Panjim') as evidence of that. Wonder what happened to the radar, and whether the looney right would be justified in being paranoid about processions (during feasts) in Poona, and wondering IF the Inquisition is coming back. ref [2] http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-February/173414.html Tues Feb 3 2009 His next rather brilliantly inflammatory implication is that hindutvawadi GOONS are ready to attack us or try to burn our homes or property or attempt to rape a member of our families. It is possible that Mr. Mendonza has never really lived in Goa - and/or that he believes that ONLY Hindus are criminals. ref [3] http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2009-January/172299.html Mon Jan 5 2009 NOW . It is possible that some Goa-netters out there will say that the above references are NOT evidence of Marshall's exaggerations - only of his anti-Hindu paranoia. These folks would perhaps take the position that JC has been unable to substantiate the allegation that Marshall has been exaggerating. I suggest to all that EVERY religious, ethnic or social grouping has good people and bad folks. If we are really interested in peace and advancement through understanding among the majority of the people we live with, OUR CRITICISM should be balanced. If we criticise others, we must also criticise ourselves. Have I not said this a number of times antes? If we criticise the 'violentes' among the Hindu right, we should also criticise the missionaries from the Christian right which denigrate Hindus. If we (rightly) criticise the murderers of the Staines, we must also criticise the abusers of children. Otherwise, we are NO different from the ignorant, brain-washed and paranoid wing-nuts who spew hate at others. AND YES .if we make errors and the error is brought to our attention, we should correct the error rather than defending the indefensible. Marshall Mendonza adds that IF he had to scan the Goanet archives, he (would) be able to cull out at least half a dozen statements made by JC which could be considered as downright communal and anti-hindu. UNFORTUNATELY...the busy Marshall.. does not have the time for it. What a pathetic and lame excuse. Not unexpected though. In any event here are some of my writings: http://www.colaco.net/1/ViolenceNeverTheAnswer.htm http://www.colaco.net/3/church-lurch.htm jc ps: I believe Marshall gave me the last word on this topic and that he has no time to research ...anyway. He is a classic 'hit and run' specialist. The difference being that he selectively hits Hindus. I am sure IF any one has seen him (by way of balance) criticising Catholics, he/she will post it here. Unless the Catholics/other Christians are blameless!
[Goanet] Gabe: Rendang Riot !
Thanks, Gabe, between food and music, you deliver ! That recipe must certainly be the right thing. Western bachelors looking for quick Indian fixes can use store stocked spaghetti sauces for curry. The Newman brand of a cheese based mix produces a north Indian korma: just mix in any common spice blend or paste like amot-tik, xacuti, tandoori or vindaloo and cook for a few minutes. I believe galangal is a ginger variant. Thanks again. eric.

[Goanet] Worship Ganesha in an eco-friendly way - Source: Agencies, The Indian Express, India Syndicate
Worship Ganesha, but in an eco-friendly way With Ganesha Chaturthi festival just around the corner, civic authorities across states have appealed to use eco-friendly Ganpati idols as per the directives from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Here's how cities are perparing for the festivities. Goa: Environmentalists in Goa have began campaigning for an eco-friendly Ganesh festival in the coastal state this year. With Ganeshotsav getting increasingly modern and detrimental to the environment, green minds have started convincing people to celebrate an 'Eco-Chaturthi'. Environmental NGOs in the state have began efforts to give an eco-touch to this festival so that the levels of noise, air and water pollution during the celebrations is reduced drastically. The environmentalist residing in state's Keri village bordering Mhadei wildlife sanctuary said Ganesh idols made of unbaked natural clay, natural fiber and recycled paper will lessen the pollution. Ensure that the dyes used to colour the idols are organic or vegetable in origin. The stress on the use of earthen or clay idols embellished by vegetable dyes is a symbolic way of displaying environment-friendliness in religion, an environmentalist said in an appeal to the people. The Goa government has banned sale of Plaster of Paris Idols, which usually float in the water bodies and create nuisance. The state-run Handicraft Corporation has launched a special subsidy scheme for the artisans who carve clay Idols. Goa Handicrafts Rural and Small Scale Industries Development Corporation (GHRSSIDC) Chairman Sameer Salgaocar said that this year around 500 artisans have applied for the subsidy. The Corporation had distributed cash subsidy of around Rs45 lakh during FY 2009-10 to various artisans. Pune: Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Pune regional head PB Mirashe said, their office has already issued circulars to local bodies to implement the rules set by CPCB. The guidelines include idols to be made from traditional clay rather than baked clay or such materials. The board has also recommended painting the idols with water soluble and non-toxic natural dyes. Use of toxic and non-biodegradable chemical dyes is prohibited, said the guidelines. With the MPCB, along with the local bodies, drafting a river pollution improvement plan, it becomes mandatory that the guidelines are followed so that the river is not polluted. The MPCB has also issued other guidelines directing mandals that materials, such as flowers, clothes, decorating material made of paper and plastic, should be removed before immersion. The guidelines also include collecting the bio-degradable material for recycling or composting and non-biodegradable materials to be collected separately for disposal in sanitary landfills, while clothes are to be handed over to the orphanages. Mumbai: Mumbaikars too have give a thumbs up to an eco Ganesha. In the run-up to Ganesh Chaturthi, the message coming from the local Mumbai authorities too is: The gods must go green. Hundreds of housing societies have registered with the Green Ganesha drive, mainly those that have awakened to the cause and are willingly opting for eco-friendly idols this year. Idol-making workshops were conducted by the NGO EnviroVigil across the city, apart from street plays or `path natikas' where actors showed how Lord Ganesh is angry at the pollution generated during festivals and will only give his blessings once amends were made. Corporates like The Bombay Store along with eCoexist have undertaken an initiative to educate people and children on the benefits of using these eco-friendly Ganesha this year. These eco-friendly Ganesha idols are crafted by traditional craftsmen in Maharashtra as well as Sirsi Karnataka. Sirsi idols fully hand sculpted are made using a base of natural clay and are designed according to scriptural code. They are then painted using natural pigments such as turmeric, red earth (geroo) and earth from Multan. The Ganeshas sculpted are natural, beautiful and environment friendly. Then there are those who will go a step ahead of all the eco-friendly talk and NOT immerse its Ganesh idol. The KDGB Nivas Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal, located in a wadi in a Girgaum bylane will nt just go green with an eco-friendly Ganesha but on visarjan (immersion) day, devotees will take the idol to the beach with the usual fanfare, but bring it back after pouring some water on its feet to symbolise immersion. The idol will be reinstalled in a smaller, permanent pandal in the wadi. Source: Agencies, The Indian Express, India Syndicate

Tried to make up in Donation Box. The lunch itself would have been twice that in most of the restaurants. Great day-tour item, but better check their 'goachitramuseum' web site to let them know how many to expect, particularly if ordering lunch. [Goanet] Eucharistic Adoration is a Transforming Experience........
Subject: Eucharistic Adoration is a Transforming Experience He walked here in the same flesh, and gave us the same flesh to be eaten unto salvation ... and not only do we not sin by adoring, we do sin by not adoring. St Augustine Eucharistic Adoration Experience During my adolescence, my best friend and a member of the senior class died after experiencing an altercation with several youth at a school dance. This death was overwhelming, extremely devastating to me, and the senior class. A classmate suggested we meet at a local Protestant Church and pray for our friend. I attended this prayer meeting. However this prayer meeting did not console me, I felt something was missing. After attending mass the following Sunday, I noticed a flyer announcing a forty-hour Eucharistic Adoration at a local parish. I reread the announcement and decided to attend. As an active Roman Catholic, I must admit I only attended Eucharistic Adoration devotions on Good Friday, but then I reflected on Jesus words, Come to me all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will refresh you and give you peace of soul. (Mt. 11:28-29). As I entered the church, I noticed Adoration had started; the Monstrance was on the altar containing the consecrated host. I kneeled and became very revered focusing on the Monstrance, on Jesus, Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and I prayed and prayed. I know Jesus lead me to this church to this Eucharistic Adoration devotion. I know Jesus was there with me and He answered my prayers. This was the start of attending many, many Eucharistic Adoration devotions. As a parishioner, St. Bartholomew's Roman Catholic Church, in Camden, New Jersey, Eucharistic Adoration is celebrated for one hour every forth Sunday. I truly look forward to Adoration; I realize I cannot do without it. This is my time to dedicate myself to personal prayer and reflection in the Presence of Jesus Christ silently, in prayer or through song. During Adoration, Jesus calls me to listen, he is inviting me to pray, and to listen is to pray. Praying is Listening (Mark 4:1-20). In order to be aware of what the Lord is trying to convey to me, I must maintain an attitude of attentive receptivity. Listening does not merely mean using my sense of hearing; it involves being wholly attuned to the Lord. It means being available to God. During Adoration, Jesus is inviting me to listen carefully to what he is communicating. He wants me to listen not only with my ears, but to listen with my heart. As I listen to what Jesus is saying to me, I begin to experience a transformation-taking place within me. Prayer is my relationship to our loving Father. During Eucharistic Adoration, I reflect on God's creative, caring, forgiving, healing, and enduring love. As Jesus says, when you look for me, you will find me. Many of us are searching for something to make us feel better; many are searching for a meaning in a world that is confused, chaotic, mixed up and sometimes hard to comprehend. When we are feeling disconsolate or discouraged, peace is a nebulous position, I recommend going to Adoration, if just for one hour. I am sure you will find that Adoration will be very inspirational and inspiring. During Adoration, I pray and I talk to God, and sometimes I meditate on a verse I feel is very soulful and rousing, Never would have made it - I never would have made it without you Lord. I am stronger, and I am wiser, yes, I know I never would have made it without you. (Marvin Snap) Adoration is my time and it could be your time to develop a stronger relationship with our loving Father and put your trust in Him. We might feel we have an idea of what real peace feels like, well peace is so sweet if you trust in Jesus, and take Him at his word. Just to rest upon his promise just to know he cares. I am so glad I learned to trust Him, my precious Jesus. He is my savior and friend, and I knew He is with me now and will be with me until my end. It really is a wonderful thing to be able to put my trust in Him. He surely keeps His word. He is faithful and wonderful and never stops being amazing. He pours so mush love and grace into me that it amazes me that I can contain it and not burst with Jesus Joy. When I began to thank Him, I cannot thank Him enough. When I attended the Tenth National Catholic Congress last July, I visited the Adoration Chapel. The Chapel was so peaceful, very relaxing, very calm and serene. I know Jesus was with me in the Chapel. I prayed and as I prayed, I meditated on a Gospel verse I truly love, One Hour with the King will change everything, one minute in His Court changed my thoughts, and yes one hour in His presence changes everything. My Sister's and Brother's in Christ you should spend time in Adoration, I am sure the Holy Spirit will fill your heart and rekindle a fire of divine love. The Eucharistic Adoration I experienced during my

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIGS_(economics) This does seem to have shades of the North Europe versus South Europe rivalry (that Dr Teotonio talks about in Medieval Goa), a shadow perhaps of the Black Legend that the Dutch painted about the Spaniards that occasionally gets reflected in the Grand Inquisition Debate (perhaps for wholly different reasons and politics in contemporary Goa)! [Goanet] Chicken Curry : Victor and Leah Rangel-Ribeiro.
The 'International Cookbook' was published in 1997 by the Parents Association of the UN School in New York. The recipe was submitted by Vic and Leah. I have 'condensed,' but not 'reduced.' Blend and reduce to a paste the following : Two medium onions, an inch of ginger, two teaspoons of cumin, two teaspoons of coriander, half a teaspoon of turmeric, two teaspoons of salt and two tablespoons of water. Sirr fry the paste and an inch piece of cinnamon in four teaspoons of olive oil, for about nine minutes. Add the chicken - about two and a half pounds, trimmed of fat, and stirr until coated. Add the juice of one lemon, a cup of chicken broth and three peppercorns. Bring to a boil. Simmer, coverd, for twenty minutes. Uncover and boil off some of the liquid. Garnish with coriander sprigs. Thank you, Victor and Leah. eric.
[Goanet] TR: corrupt
Dear Editor Please publish this article Bruno Gomes NEW DELHI: Almost one-third of Indians are utterly corrupt and half are borderline, the outgoing head of the country's corruption watchdog has said, blaming increased wealth for much of the problem. Pratyush http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Pratyush%20Sinha Sinha, who retired as India's Central http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Central Vigilance Commissioner http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Commissioner this week, said the worst part of his thankless job was observing how corruption had increased as people became more materialistic. When we were growing up I remember if somebody was corrupt, they were generally looked down upon, he said. There was at least some social stigma attached to it. That is gone. So there is greater social acceptance. Transparency International, the global anti-graft body, puts India 84th on its corruption perception index with a 3.4-point rating, out of a best possible score of 10. New http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=New%20Zealand Zealand ranks first with 9.4 points and Somalia http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Somalia last on 1.1 points. The campaign group has said that each year millions of poor Indian families have to bribe officials for access to basic public services. Sinha told the Mint newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday that 20 per cent of Indians were honest, regardless of the temptations, because this is how they are. They have a conscience. There would be around 30 per cent who would be utterly corrupt. But the rest are the people who are on the borderline, he said, adding that corruption was palpable. Sinha said that in modern India if somebody has a lot of money, he is respectable. Nobody questions by what means he has got the money. Recent corruption scandals in India have focused on construction projects for the Commonwealth Games that open in New Delhi http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/New-Delhi next month, and alleged tax evasion in the lucrative Indian http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Indian%20Premier%20League Premier League ( IPL http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=IPL ) cricket tournament. India is also regarded as a hotbed of illegal betting syndicates, with gamblers and bookmakers involved in spot-fixing -- the gambling that has engulfed the current Pakistani cricket tour of England http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=England . Prime http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=Prime%20Minister Minister Manmohan http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Manmohan-Singh Singh has often spoken out against the damaging effect that bribes, extortion and fraud have on all levels of life, and warned that the problem threatens India's Read more: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/One-in-three-Indians-utterly-corru pt-Former-CVC/articleshow/6518255.cms One in three Indians 'utterly corrupt': Former CVC - The Times of India http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/One-in-three-Indians-utterly-corru pt-Former-CVC/articleshow/6518255.cms http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/One-in-three-Indians-utterly-corrup t-Former-CVC/articleshow/6518255.cms#ixzz0ywwcSRyS
[Goanet] World's most livable cities...
Vancouver city, Canada named as the world's most livable city as per a survey conducted by the Economics Intelligence Unit. Delhi is ranked at 113th place and Mumbai at 117th place. Frankly, I don't have any expertise in this field, nor do I understand how this works, but: * What about rating non-cities? Can cities only offer a good quality of life? * My friend Sajan argues that Delhi and Mumbai should be treated as countries. In population, both are almost as large as, say, Australia. * It might be interesting if there was a rating for locations within India. Would Goa fare better as she is, or covered with a whole lot more of concrete? As far as economists go, of course, concrete makes a lot of sense, afaik. [Goanet] Union Council of Ministers is poorest of the poor!!
India's Union Council of Ministers is no richer than any Goanet Members? And yet we all implicate our honorable ministers with wealth. They were so modest that they even did not want their poor financial background to be known to their countrymen. They were so honest that they did not even want 200 % raise in their salaries and perks. I know you won't believe in what I am writing. [Goanet] Pro Musica's Young Goan Talents...
