[Goanet-News] NEWS: 2, 000-odd crowd near Mandovi bridge ... protest over highway issue in Goa (GoaTNT)

2010-11-02 Thread Goanet News
OSCAR REBELLO, GBA, STOCKHOLM SYNDROME AND A HIGHWAY TO HELL
02-11-2010 | 07:33 PM
By GoaTNT Writer

Panaji: Just when one got the feeling that chief minister Digambar
Kamat has cunningly out-manouvered, outsmarted, outdone, out-thought,
out-silenced and ran into ground organisations like the Goa Bachao
Abhiyaan and other civil society groups and activists with repeated
fake assurances on key issues, the National Highway might just reverse
the tide against him.

Dr Oscar Rebello, once the blue-eyed boy of civil agitation in Goa,
who perhaps suffered from the infamous 'Stockholm Syndrome' (Wiki
describes the SS as a paradoxical psychological phenomenon wherein
hostages -- in this case Rebello, express adulation and have positive
feelings towards their captors -- in this case Kamat, that appear
irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims,
essentially mistaking a lack of abuse from their captors as an act of
kindness) is once again walking the 'Highway' to hell.

He was one of the several speakers, who took the streets of Panaji
under the banner of national highway diversion action committee
(NHDAC) as part of a 2,00 strong rally in the city.

“We don’t have a habit of coming on the streets but the Digamber Kamat
government has made a history by making sure that people are agitating
on streets almost every day with some or other demand,” Rebello said
addressing 2,000-odd crowd near Mandovi bridge.

The crowd which assembled at Azad maidan walked till the Mandovi
bridge where they were stopped. Agitating leaders gave their speeches
while agitators squatted on the road.

Oscar drew parallel between highway agitation and Regional Plan agitation.

“It was then that the Goans showed the government their might and this
time too, history will repeat,” he said.

The doctor also said that if we don’t protest now, 50 years down the
line, Goa would be known as a den of prostitution.

Sunil Desai, convenor of NHDAC, said that the agitation will now hit
all the villages. “We will be holding village level meetings and after
Diwali there will be a meeting in Margao in which protestors will
march to the residence of Digamber Kamat,” he said.

Leaders cutting across party line supported the agitation, which went
peacefully except for minor scuffle between scuffle between agitators
and police at Old Mandovi bridge.

[Goanet] Goa?s Doomsday Scenario

2010-11-02 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Basically in one circle Dr V A Pai Panandikar, the noted economist and
policy planner is talking about having SEZs. The result of Goa?s shifting
industrial policy is that industrialists no longer trust Goa and are loath
to set up shop here.
Really? And so? And that is the extent of planning. I hope he and others
have more ideas in the mix.

People must learn to live within their means. For Goans it may mean art,
crafts, food, boarders, etc. People have to realize that there are other
models. Capitalism if that is all they relate to, can be made to function
for themselves. The politicians and various elites will always sell
nostalgia (basically, Popot or Pipit -- with texture and sheen). That is
what allows the coffers to be filled in ways that align with their economic
mindsets, economic planning and economic policies.

Most of these so-thought of bright lights could not make make a plain dal if
one held a penknife to their heads and a pit-bull near their buttocks.

Perhaps an essay I am writing and due soon, should be re-framed asap, to The
Trafficking in Nostalgia.

Dr V A Pai Panandikar, the noted economist and policy planner had
another take on the problem. SEZs, he told me, made sense when the
import and export policy was restrictive. The scenario has radically
changed and so, new SEZs are no longer justified but it did not mean
that government should go back on already licensed SEZs. The result of
Goa?s shifting industrial policy is that industrialists no longer trust
Goa and are loath to set up shop here.

[Goanet] Our 'Ghost-hunting' trip (Grave-man II)

2010-11-02 Thread JoeGoaUk
===
This is further to our ‘Ghost hunting’ trip on  Alma or ASD’s eve
(For Part I see link below)

We drive for about 30 minutes, without looking back.. via Bambolim

When approaching Miramar, we saw a white car ahead of
us with louder music on, we were hoping there were at least
4 occupants..
The car suddenly stopped almost in the middle of the
bypass Road (Jack de Sequeira Road, Miramar beach).
We slowed down and quickly took a pic, noted No. too
Guess what? There was no body inside
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtypanjim4/5139001802/

Then we decided to get out of the car and take some fresh
air. As usual, Beach was in complete darkness.

Under the dead highmast, there are some benches
We heard some noises, thought a group having fun.
Decided to take one of the benches to relax
Nobody there… however we did find some empty bottles etc
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtypanjim4/5136226603/

'Let’s go home' said one of us
While heading home via DB Road.
We saw a man with his head down sitting at a bus stop,
near TOI.  When reached closer, he is gone (we did not
see him going though)
However, he did leave behind a pair of shoes
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtypanjim4/5136837818/

We then arrived market area..
We saw another spooky man on the floor/Promenade
Captured him on camera before he disappears
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dirtypanjim4/5136217287/

Grave man II ?
This is really the hair-raising one
(at Panjim Ferry point)

Look, is he not the same grave man?
- What you talking about?
We reversed, just to make sure..
O my god! He is the one..with the same lifted leg style
Captured him live on camera
(gave us guts since we were in the car with engine on
ready to flee..)

 Tiatr DON VANNTE

It was a suspense thriller indeed!

In a posh bungalow there live a rich man Mr. Jack (Miguel Rosario),
His son James (Creto D’Costa), House maid Rosy (Dorine Fernandes)
and a house boy Hitler (Aldair Figueiredo)

James neglected by parental love, a school drop out is a petty thief.
A one man robber gang. He is into fast money making and be
as rich as his father (Lives with rich father though).

He now joins a gang, who is the boss? No body knows.
 They only follow his instructions.

In another household there live Mrs, Rita (Rita Fernandes)
and her daughter Daisy (Valancia Nunes).
Rita and Jack never get on well with each other.
Rita comes to jack’s house every money to collect a sort of
 fixed ‘hafta’.

Yet there is another runaway little girl from his ‘Maxen’ aunty.
She is Jane (Joylin Barbosa) whose father was killed and since then
she was living with her aunt who maltreated her and never wants to go back.

And there is Mr. Jerry (Domnic Araujo) a family friend of both families.
A very influential person, even helped Daisy to get a decent job.
As nothing come for free, Jerry wants some favours form Daisy
in return.. he did not specify the type of favour he is after..

James and daisy are good friends, just friends but
the father is not happy about their friendship and
tell him to stay away from her

Wilson (Teotonio Pereira), Jack’s friend feel piety for this
child Jane and takes her to Jack’s place for a temporary shelter.
When Jane sees James, she fainted and collapsed.

Many questions needed answers such as..

Why Jane fainted on seeing James?
What James is into? Who is his boss?
Why Rita and Jack don’t get on well?*
Why Rita coming to Jack’s place every month?*
The monthly hafta or the dole, what for?*
Why the mother also not happy with James and Daisy friendship?*
Who is this Uncle Jerry? Why he is poking his nose into
 the family affairs?
What favours he was after from Daisy?
Wilson is like a right hand of Mr. Jack but what business is
 Mr. Jack into?

Well, I am sure. by now, you know the answers to above
questions marked with asterisk (*) or atleast have a hunch

All answers revealed in the end.
Hence it is a suspense thriller.

These are the effects when a family is divided into two

DON VANTTE a tiatr by Eusico Fernandes (Sao Minguel Club,
Donapaula) was the 21st or the last entry in the 36th All Goa
Tiatr Competition by Kala Academy, Staged on 27th Oct. 2010

Well, the tiatr was good, infact too good.
Good stage setting with light house etc, good story,
good music, good songs etc could take this tiatr to top 3

Well it all depends on these 3 judges.
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauktiatr7/5122693990/
fr. Bernard Cotta, CD Silva, Vitorin Pereira
KA Member sec. Pandurang also seen

At least you know my verdict.

The comedy by young Aldair Figueiredo (house boy) was good too
Won’t surprise me if he gets an award for his comedy role.
Creto, Rita, Miguel, Valancia, Joylin, Dorine also done very well.

 Songs were simply too good
Songs by Agnelo Vaz (2), Eugene Cardozo,
Yoing Clayton Mendes (2), Young Aldair Figueiredo,
Custodio Fernandes, Simon Fernandes etc were simply
the best - see pics of all
Besides, Little Joylin and Felix Barbosa, Eusico Fernandes (2),
Valancia Nunes (2), Teotonio Pereira (2), Creto D’Costa,
Leslie Pereira, Manuel Estrocio(2) were good too.
JoeGoaUk’s top prize goes to the two duo singers dressed in
 Hindu suit/dhoti /umbrella - Custodio and Simon

However, her statement quoted above is not necessarily true, nor should it
be true. The right and left wings in the U.S., for instance, are as rabid as
in India. Living under a constitution that guarantees freedom of expression,
none of the exponents of these ideologies is silenced or can be silenced by
any means for any length of time. In fact, in most cases the opposite
happens. After publicly claiming that their own beliefs are the best and the
truest of all - indeed, going beyond and claiming that any deviation from
their own beliefs is evil - they become much more famous and rich, receiving
highly lucrative book deals, and radio and TV show contracts.

I saw a programme on T.V. last night, which claimed that Glen Beck has

would have to give up her lucrative income, also running into millions!

On another aspect, we have preachers of hate here in London, who have not

Difficult to have them deported, tax payers end up footing their Legal Aid

[Goanet] Press Note-TAG

2010-11-02 Thread Tiatr Academy Goa
Press Note

*For Favour of Publication*

*Meet the Tiatr Artiste ‘Master Vaz’*

A special programme *‘Meet the Tiatr Artiste – Master Vaz’* was organised by
Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) on 29th October 2010 at the Conference Hall of
TAG, Campal, Panaji-Goa. Speaking on the occasion the veteran tiatr artiste
Mr. Jose Lawrence Vaz popularly known as Master Vaz narrated numerous life
experiences throughout his journey in the field of Goan Tiatr.

Master Vaz delved on the conditions that existed during that time on the
tiatr stage and disclosed that there was no proper transport, no proper
equipment and no adequate facilities to stage tiatrs during that time.
Inspite of lack of facilities, the tiatrs staged during that time were more
meaningful and enjoyable. This was mainly because of the dedication of the
artistes of that time to the tiatr stage.

Narrating his experiences as an actor who did female roles throughout his
career disclosed that he along with other artistes namely Vincent de
Saligao, Ms.Julie, Remmie Colaco etc. all of them acting as females on the
tiatr stage were responsible to keep the tiatr stage not only active but
vibrant.

He also disclosed that the artistes of that times namely Minguel Rod, Young
Menezes, Kid Boxer and others with whom Master Vaz acted in different roles
and sang numerous songs were all genuinely dedicated to the cause of Tiatr.
It is for this reason that they did not make any money as modern day tiatr
artistes do.

Answering questions from his well wishers, he stated that it was an honour
to him done by TAG by organising such a beautiful programme for the first
time. He stated that although he is not very active on the tiatr stage, he
keeps himself occupied by writing plays for children from the village as
well as for All India Radio etc.

Earlier Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG welcomed the gathering and
explained the importance of such programmes. If the youth of today would
like to know about the tremendous contribution of the tiatr artistes of
yester years to the Konkani stage, we will have to organize more such
programmes so that the memories of these stalwarts of tiatr stage remain
alive for generations to come. Shri. Roseferns, Vice-President of TAG
proposed the vote of thanks.

A brochure having detailed information of the life of Master Vaz was also
released on the occasion. Master Vaz was presented a memento on behalf of
TAG by the Vice-President Shri. Roseferns.

[Goanet] Tiatr ‘Development’

2010-11-02 Thread JoeGoaUk

Tiatr ‘Development’

It all  about the present day  youth problems etc.
Topics like unemployment, suicides, drugs, massage parlours,
Politics/Ministers, Police etc covered in this tiatr.

It says
‘Suicide should not be taken as end of the road’
‘Stresses the importance of mass Public awareness on the issues
affecting society and its development’
‘No development is possible without people support’

UDORGOT a tiartr by Auggie D’Mello
(Britona Dramatic Academy, Penha de France)
was the  19th entry in the 26th Tiatr Competition. of Kala Academy
Staged on 25th Oct. 2010

The Tiatr had about 13 beautiful songs
Songs by Baby Francia Camilo, Sr. Camilo Sisters (Quartet),
duet by Hamlin/Shirlie, comedy duet by Hermigildo/Rosalin,
duo by Johny/Clancy, Zylnna/Avira were some of the best

Other singers were T Britton, Jr. Camilo sisters, D’Silva Sisters etc

JoeGoaUk’s prize went to Hermegild/Rosalin Comedy duet.

Extra:
This is the Tiatr that was declared houseful almost within 2 hours of
opening of ticket sale counter.
i.e. tiatr schedule for Monday 7pm and all sold out on Friday 12 noon.

Almost 90% of the ticket bought by the troupe themselves, leaving
the regular tiatr buffs in lurch .
This was not very nice as many had to go back on Friday PM,
Saturday, Sunday and the day of the show, Monday.

As per the revised rules, a troupe can take/purchase upto 50% of the
 total i.e. about 450 tickets.
But despite buying the quota in bulk, others bought up to 20 each at a
time and when KA man interfered, it was then sold max 5 tickets per
head and the same people kept on  re-joining the Q
until they achieved their target.
(This post was delayed in protest against these type of behaviour
 by the troupe)

Tushar the hero, although done pretty well, appeared to young for
his role, particularly during the second half

The son/Hero when completely lost his mind, run straight to
the beach/lighthouse to commit suicide
But there it seems he regain his sound mind as he was seen
chatting/ listening to the old man there.

[Goanet] CONGRESS BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION ?

2010-11-02 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The velocity with which the CBI moved to get former Gujarat Home Minister
Amit Shah’s bail cancelled raises many eyebrows. As never before, within
hours of the Gujarat High Court order, the CBI burnt midnight oil to knock
on the doors of the Supreme Court. The CBI has, however, a lot to explain as
to why it is dragging its feet in many other cases. The 2G Spectrum scam
involving Telecom Minister A. Raja is a case in point. However politically
sensitive the case may be, the CBI has to prove its independence and
credibility. It should not allow itself to be reduced to merely being the
Congress Bureau of Investigation. That is, if it isn’t already one.

..., with the benefit of much more advanced techniques, a snippet of which
was given in the CNN news report, clearly shows that, like all other mental

subsequent activity of the brain.

I would rely more on persons like Romila Thapar,Irfan Habib, Bipin Chandra

My response:

Perhaps it is necessary to revise this reliance given based on what
information is now available from the comments by the judges in the Ayodhya
judgment. The enclosed article makes, some what I consider to be,
disturbing observations.

How Allahabad HC exposed 'experts' espousing Masjid cause Abhinav Garg, TNN,
Oct 9, 2010 Times of India

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/How-Allahabad-HC-exposed-experts-es
pousing-Masjid-cause/articleshow/6716643.cms

NEW DELHI: The role played by independent experts - historians and
archaeologists who appeared on behalf of the Waqf Board to support its claim
- has come in for criticism by one of the Allahabad High Court judges in the
Ayodhya verdict.

While the special bench of three judges unanimously dismissed objections
raised by the experts to the presence of a temple, it was Justice Sudhir
Agarwal who put their claims to extended judicial scrutiny.

Most of these experts deposed twice. Before the ASI excavations, they said
there was no temple beneath the mosque and, after the site had been dug up,
they claimed what was unearthed was a mosque or a stupa. During lengthy
cross-examination spread over several pages and recorded by Justice Agarwal,
the historians and experts were subjected to pointed queries about their
expertise, background and basis for their opinions.

To the court's astonishment, some who had written signed articles and issued
pamphlets, found themselves withering under scrutiny and the judge said they
were displaying an ostrich-like attitude to facts.

He also pointed out how the independent witnesses were all connected - one
had done a PhD under the other, another had contributed an article to a book
penned by a witness.

Some instances underlined by the judge are: Suvira Jaiswal deposed whatever
knowledge I gained with respect to disputed site is based on newspaper
reports or what others told (other experts). She said she prepared a report
on the Babri dispute after reading newspaper reports and on basis of
discussions with medieval history expert in my department. Supriya Verma,
another expert who challenged the ASI excavations, had not read the ground
penetration radar survey report that led the court to order an excavation.
She did her PhD under another expert Shireen F Ratnagar.

Verma and Jaya Menon alleged that pillar bases at the excavated site had
been planted but HC found they were not present at the time the actual
excavation took place.

Archaeologist Shereen F Ratnagar has written the introduction to the book
of another expert who deposed, Professor Mandal. She admitted she had no
field experience.

Normally, courts do not make adverse comments on the deposition of a
witness and suffice it to consider whether it is credible or not, but we
find it difficult to resist ourselves in this particular case considering
the sensitivity and nature of dispute and also the reckless and
irresponsible kind of statements... the judge has noted.

He said opinions had been offered without making a proper investigation,
research or study in the subject. The judge said he was startled and
puzzled by contradictory statements. When expert witness Suraj Bhan deposed
on the Babri mosque, the weight of his evidence was contradicted by another
expert for Muslim parties, Shirin Musavi, who told the court that Bhan is
an archaeologist and not an expert on medieval history.

Justice Agarwal referred to signed statements issued by experts and noted
that instead of helping in making a cordial atmosphere it tends to create
more complications, conflict and controversy. He pointed out that experts
carry weight with public opinion. One cannot say that though I had made a
statement but I am not responsible for its authenticity since it is not
based on my study or research but what I have learnt from what others have
uttered, Justice Aggarwal has said, emphasizing the need for thorough
original research before concurring with what someone else has claimed.

[Goanet] Church Land: Going, Going, Gone

2010-11-02 Thread U. G. Barad
A) Gabe Menezes, Portuguese patriot, after my response to Marshall, now
prefers not to discuss anything more on the subject that Gabe had raised.
Why? The answer lies in his message: 4, dated: Sun, 31 Oct 2010. Through
this message he gives elderly guidance to Marshall saying (Gabe addresses
Marshall as Dear! Suprising!!):

'Dear Marshall, You have used a sledge hammer to crack a nut, I believe most
of us know fully well the political as well as right wing sentiments
expressed by UG BARAD. The bottom line is, you can take a horse to the water
but you can't make it drink! No use expending unnecessary energy.

B) Marshall Mendonza, specialist in goal post shifting, responded to my
query on above subject line by again shifting the goal post. (The subject
is: Church Land: Going, Going, Gone). (Ref: Goanet Digest, Vol 5, Issue
1192, and Message: 1, Date: Sun, 31 Oct 2010).

In reply, Marshall sends irrelevant web-links which in no way answers
questions I had asked to Marshal. The links provided by Marshall as answer
to above are:

I don't think any sensible man will ever provide irrelevant answers like
Marshall always does.

My last free advice: A) To Marshall: Keep reading the contents contained in
the web-links provided by you and keep scratching your head. It's good to
keep you busy within those links. 2) To Gabe Menezes: You are free for name
calling w.r.t. me but equally be prepared to take in return - don't get
irritated, and if you do, it will only cause you more irritations and
frustrations within.

My response and questions to Marshall, still not answered, on above subject
are:

After reading complete article (responses Para wise) forwarded by Marshall,
few questions pops up, they are:

1) In the first place, how did the church have the possession of the said
property in question?
2) Was it gifted / donated for any specific purpose!
3) If it is gifted / donated, what do the deed papers say?

[Goanet] Dr Koenraad Elst on Ayodhya

2010-11-02 Thread U. G. Barad
While responding to my message, Charudatt Prabhudesai wrote on Mon, 1 Nov
2010:

I say: Our propensity towards Europhilia is demonstrably revealed by this
simple fact that this white man, Dan Discolli, with just a couple of
unctuous posts has won the hearts and minds of a few of my goanet brothers
and sister. (I have no reason to suspect the genuineness of his passion, nor
am I happy to be prejudiced against the white, even so)

The point is, a nation with more than a billion opinions is not likely to
escape any thought, or turn of thought, or angle on the Ayodhya issue that
may be attributed as a distinct new contribution by prof. Elst to what has
become a farrago.

NO FOREIGNER can comprehend complexities of Indian ethos, so it is risky to
consider his opinion on matters native to India, particularly if the issue
is deep-rooted in her more than five thousand years of uniform cultural
continuum.
More often than not, a foreign 'authority' or commentator on Indian issues
has made a mess of the original simple but lofty idea behind our ethnics.

My response:

I agree to disagree with your comprehended version on complexity issues. To
date there is no nation in the world which is free of complications,
involvedness, convolution, complexity of ethos etc. Today every nation,
including India, is paralyzed by complexities of one or other things which
are deeply-rooted since time immemorial. India is not unique in any way! So
much so that every city, town and even INDIVIDUAL houses in this globe has
one or other complex problem - no heavenly peace prevail anywhere.
Complexity is an inevitable shadow - which one can't avoid. Knowing this
fully well has anyone stopped writing / expressing ones views / opinions on
others problems. No. To this effect, there is one famous saying in Konkani,
which in English means it's inherent human tendency to point fingers, give
free advice, write, speak, etc about others complex problem(s) forgetting
what's happening in their own house!

Have we not seen Goans, including all Indians writing and speaking volumes
about other nations complexities - Goanet is full with such messages! This
includes writing against others religion, against others culture, against
others ethos, against every dam thing prevailing under the sun!!

What would you say about USA, UK, and other veto power holding nations who
not only offer free advice to other nation's affairs but makes sure that
that nation follows the advice given? Are these nations right is releasing
roadmaps for other nations to follow? Has anyone raised any voice on such
attitudes of veto power nations, more specifically USA and UK who always
follows and backs USA on international affairs? Has anyone compelled them to
stop their interferences in others affairs? If every nation buys your
version 'foreigners advise and or opinions are not required' than the very
existence of UNO becomes obsolete. I can go on and on unearthing examples
on the issue, but let me now wind up.
In nut shall, no one can stop others from offering their opinion on others
complexities. What one can do is either except or reject the opinion(s)
totally. However, in my personal opinion, sensible men will always try to
comprehend others opinion before rejecting it point blank. And for very
sure, our supreme court will never give any cognizance to what Dr Koenraad
Elst has written on Ayodhya issue, although in one recent judgment Supreme
Court literarily picked up some sentences written in Wikipedia. Most
importantly, I've not made any comments on acceptability or otherwise on Dr.
Else's writing on Ayodhya issue

Having written this explanation, it does not dilute the question posed to
Gabe Menezes. My question, i.e. Just because Dr Elst is a foreigner does it
make his arguments wrong, And, I would not be incorrect if I say that the
arguments put forward by Dr Elst have been made by many Indians (who are
resident of India and not Indian born foreign citizens), still remains
unanswered by Gabe. Will Gabe answer!!

Best regards,

U. G. Barad

[Goanet] Cop nod for Shilpa's nightclub upsets Bandra residents

2010-11-02 Thread U. G. Barad
Author: Linah Baliga
Publication: The Times of India
Date: October 31, 2010
URL:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Cop-nod-for-Shilpas-nightclub
-upsets-Bandra-residents/articleshow/6844064.cms

Introduction: We are shocked that licences have been granted to the
Royalty. A bar in a residential area is a nuisance. We can't sleep at night
because of all the noise. Plus, we'll have to put up with drunkards and
traffic jams

Controversy seems to be following actor Shilpa Shetty's business ventures.
While her IPL team, Rajasthan Royals, is currently locked in a bitter legal
battle with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), her
nightclub-The Royalty-has irked Bandra residents. Fed up of revellers'
drunken brawls, noise and snarls, a section of locals had launched a protest
drive against nightclubs in residential areas. To add to the residents'
woes, the police have granted permission to the nightclub for a
bar-cum-permit room. The Royalty, run by Shilpa's husband Raj Kundra in
partnership with Prashant Gunjalkar, is located in the heart of Bandra (W)
on Water field Road-a predominantly residential area. The club will operate
out of the basement of a building that earlier housed a swanky discotheque,
Poison.

The cops' sanction has added zing to the residents' campaign against
nightclubs in residential areas.

Earlier this year, members of Revival Citizen's Group, along with various
Advanced Locality Managements (ALMs) from Bandra (W), had knocked on the
state home minister RR Patil's door with their complaints about mushrooming
of nightclubs in residential areas. Patil had then directed the social
securities branch to inquire into the matter.

Deputy commissioner of police V Jadhav said, The Royalty is neither a
nightclub nor a discotheque. But permissions have been granted for a bar and
permit room.

It has now reapplied under bar and permit room instead of their earlier
request to have a lounge and a bristo. Call it by any other fancy name, our
problems refuse to go away. We are shocked that licences have been granted.
Our problems on noise pollution, huge crowds, parking woes on a 40 feet road
continue to remain. A bar in a residential area is a nuisance. We can't
sleep at night because of all the noise. Plus, we'll have to put up with
drunkards and jams,, we'll have to put up with allowed, drinking will be
allowed and it will create a nuisance value,
said Manuela Saldanha, secretary, Revival Citizens' Group.

Despite several attempts, Gunjalkar remained unavailable for comment.

Anandini Thakoor, president of the H (West) Federation, said, There's a
provision in the Bombay Police Act, 1951, which allows for revocation of a
club's licences if it creates nuisance for the residents. We will file a PIL
on behalf of residents. We demand special zones for clubs in Bandra.

[Goanet] NEWS: 2, 000-odd crowd near Mandovi bridge ... protest over highway issue in Goa (GoaTNT)

[Goanet] MFIs are making profits at the expense of the poorest people

2010-11-02 Thread Marshall Mendonza
It is sad to see one of the success stories of India going sour.Micro
finance (pioneered by Mohammed Yunus of Bangladesh of Grameen Bank fame and
a Nobel Peace prize winner) was sought to be emulated in India by USA
returned Dr Vikram Akula. It was a great success initially until greed
overtook social responsibility. It is sad to read about the number of
suicides caused by pathani interest rates. It is yet another dream gone
sour.

[Goanet] VISHWAJEET CONFIDENT OF DEFEATING PATNEKAR IN BICHOLIM

2010-11-02 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

*PANJIM Nov 2: *If winning the Valpoi assembly by-poll was good then
sweeping the municipal elections of both Valpoi and Bicholim councils came
as an icing on the cake for Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at his plush residence at Dona Paula, the minister who
appeared confident and more than elated was more than eager to introduce his
winning candidates to the media.
Rane was so confidence personified that answering a question on whether he
will opt to contest in Bicholim in the next assembly elections he said he
would defeat the reigning MLA Rajesh Patenkar by a huge margin, a la Valpoi
style. If the party decides I should contest from Bicholim then so be it, he
stated.
He said in terms of development the Bharatiya Janata Party hasn’t done much
and this has come from the people. I believe Bicholim should be the centre
point of development, but compared to Valpoi there is not much to see there,
he asserted.
Rane observed the people of Bicholim have polarised towards the Congress.
Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar campaigned for his candidate Dr Shekhar
Salkar, but he lost. He has promised a lot of things but till date they have
been deprived of sound infrastructure, he charged.
Riding on a wave of these wins, the minister now wants to enter BJP bastions
of Mandrem and Siolim, where he says the Congress was confident of making
inroads in the 2012 assembly polls.
However, the minister is yet to apply his mind on the issue of expansion of
highways. “I am sure the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will take an
appropriate decision in the matter,” he stated.
Speaking on developments in Valpoi, he commented, “No expert can tell me an
industrial estate was not good for the constituency. “If people want it then
so be it. Also, it doesn’t mean because we fall in the range of Western
Ghats there should be no developments,” he asserted.(Herald)

[Goanet] OSCAR REBELLO, GBA, STOCKHOLM SYNDROME AND A HIGHWAY TO HELL

2010-11-02 Thread soter

Hey Goa TNT writer ! !!
Yeh to Assembly Syndrome bhai. Highway to Hell or Sell provided it leads
them into the Well (of the House). 2000 was a massive crowd for
BJP-NCP-UGDP-SS-MGP-combine, was'nt it? Goans are too lazy to come out
onto the roads again and again after the elections, so this is the time.
Goans wasted their chance in Sattari. It should have been an Oscar -
Vishwajeet fight.
Goa definitely and urgently needs an Oscar (to give Bhashanam) in the
Assembly and if possible in the CM's chair to provide the Quick Fix to Goa's
problems. Present NH and Save Goa action leaders could then be considered
for an unemployment dole under DSSS or some rehabilitation scheme.

If I ever decide to cavort in stupor (of any sort) with lions (perhaps at a

unwilling to regard me as Daniel; then simply calm down and take some
pictures for posterity --- the vanishing of vjp. Sent them to the rotten

2010-11-02 Thread Jason Keith Fernandes

Dear BC,

I have said this before and will say this again. While I can understand
your position, while canvassing it, please dont be bizarre! There is
nothing that is more detrimental to a position that the kind of
untenable positions that you suggest.

British Corporate interests were present in Goa even before 1961. The
rail link to Goa was a result of British corporate interests.

Similarly, the capitalist exploitation of the Goan mines also began
under the Portuguese regime.

You do not need to support the Portuguese regime blindly to make the
protests of Indian action that you do. Even the Portuguese are not
interested in Goa anymore. The Goans however, continue to be. Perhaps
you would like to make that point,

regards,

Jason

British corporate came to Goa under the signature of the current rule
imposed upon Goans since 1961. You call it liberation?

[Goanet] Dr Koenraad Elst on Ayodhya

2010-11-02 Thread Marshall Mendonza
U G Barad:
Perhaps it is necessary to revise this reliance given based on what
information is now available from the comments by the judges in the Ayodhya
judgment. The enclosed article makes, some what I consider to be,
disturbing observations.

Response:
Please read the foll article-
Two archaeologists have had a run-in with the law for their book on the
Babri masjid site

*Pronoti Datta | TNN *

In 1968, archaeologist Shereen Ratnagar travelled to Ashvan in Turkey to
participate in an excavation. Her professor pointed to a wall and a floor
and instructed the nervous young woman to identify which was older. On
hindsight, the moment seems prophetic. In 2003, when Ratnagar and fellow
archaeologist D Mandal surveyed the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI)
excavation of the Babri Masjid site, one of their most significant
discoveries involved the vintage of a wall and a floor.

The two archaeologists spent a day examining the site in order to

verify the ASI report on behalf of the Sunni Waqf Board in 2003. Four years
later, they published a highly critical appraisal of the ASI’s work in a
book titled Ayodhya: Archaeology After Excavation. In April 2010, three
years after the publication of the book, the Allahabad high court considered
the authors and their publisher Tulika Books in contempt of court. The court
objected to the authors, who are also witnesses in the case, expressing
their opinion on a matter that was still being tried. The judges also
verbally ordered the publisher to recall all unsold copies of the book. “I
feel there has been an injustice,” says Ratnagar, a specialist in the
Harappan civilisation who taught archaeology at Jawaharlal Nehru University
(JNU) for 22 years before retiring in 2000. “But I respect judicial
procedure and I have to be silent till the case comes to a resolution.”
She’s frustrated that as the case continues to hang in the balance, she
can’t express her views on Ayodhya as freely as her peers.

It was recently reported that Sudhir Agarwal, one of the judges at the
Allahabad high court, criticised some of witnesses for the Waqf Board.
Ratnagar, it was said, admitted not having any experience on the field.
However the archaeologist says that she has participated in excavations in
India, England, Iraq and Bahrain.

Before tearing into the ASI report, the book outlines the history of the
dispute. It’s a context that has always been politically charged, right from
1853 when records show that Hindu ascetics captured the premises of the
mosque declaring that it stood on Ram’s birthplace. Colonial records from
the mid- and late-nineteenth century, in what was perhaps a political move,
support the Hindu claim that Babur’s general Mir Baqi destroyed a temple to
build the mosque. In 1949, the controversy flared up afresh when idols of
Ram and Sita were secretly installed inside the mosque. The district
magistrate insisted the idols remain and ordered the mosque shut. In 1986,
Rajiv Gandhi controversially opened the locks and allowed a shilanyas on the
premises of the mosque. Four years later, L K Advani’s rath yatra for the
construction of a temple led to the mosque’s demolition in 1992.

Mandal and Ratnagar have criticised both the ASI’s methods of working
and the conclusions it has drawn. The authors have found fault with the way
the ASI established the chronology of the successive periods of habitation
on the site. Archaeological finds such as pieces of pottery were not
classified correctly and the site itself was strewn with debris. They write
that finds such as glazed tiles and animal bones were not correctly tabled.
A number of verdict critics believe that the presence of bones suggests that
the excavated structure was not a temple. The writers argue that the bones
were part of landfills. If it was a temple, then the soil would have been
sieved and the bones removed. But since there is no proof of this, the site
cannot be a temple. It’s also possible that the inhabitants were
non-vegetarian. “Yet, some people seem to be rather opposed to acknowledging
this fact. This might be one of the reasons for the suppression of details
in the (ASI) Report pertaining to the recovery of animal bones,” Mandal and
Ratnagar write.

The fifty ‘pillars bases’ have also been widely debated. Supporters of
the temple theory believe that the bases suggest the presence of a temple.
However, Vidula Jayaswal, a professor in Benares Hindu University’s
department of ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology, who reviewed
Ayodhya agrees with the ASI’s interpretation. “It’s an architectural feature
of the Gupta period,” she points out. “Pillars were put above brick
cushions.” But, “archaeologically one cannot prove that it was Ram
Janmabhoomi”. Mandal and Ratnagar assert that the ‘pillar bases’ are clumps
of bricks that are too feeble to support the weight of pillars and their
view is widely supported by archaeologists and historians who reject the
temple theory. In a

Hi JKF,

It looks like day by day you are getting tempremental. Is the bacalhau
not doing you good in Lisboa?

With reference to British interests, the rail link was a project and not
in the lines of mining explotation. It is true that iron ore etc was
unearthed in the early 20th century, but were you expecting that Goans
lived on love and fresh air? Besides, I support Goa blindly (you are
drawing wrong conclusions about my Portucalia), the actions of 61 was a
great catastrophy for Goans. It is time that our new rulers reflect and
acknowledge the failures, and stop the exploitation of Goa now.

Dear BC,

You do not need to support the Portuguese regime blindly to make the
protests of Indian action that you do. Even the Portuguese are not
interested in Goa anymore. The Goans however, continue to be. Perhaps
you would like to make that point,

[Goanet] The Shape of the Beast

2010-11-02 Thread U. G. Barad

Marshall Mendoza provided us with the following link to an article on the
latest issues regarding Arundhati Roy:

http://www.tehelka.com/story_main47.asp?filename=Ne061110Coverstory.asp

While those interested must have read the article forwarded by Marshall. I
would recommend they also read the interview of Syed Geelani, with whom she
shared the dais where the controversy of her statement arose. The title is:
India has a secular system, which we Kashmiris can under no condition
accept: Syed Ali Shah Geelani, and is availabel at:

URL:
http://www.NewAgeIslam.com/NewAgeIslamArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=3590

I would like to highlight only TWO questions in the long interview.

Q: In some of your writings you have argued against Kashmir being an
independent state, even claiming that this is an Indian 'ploy'. Can you
elaborate?
A: This is true. It is an Indian ploy, because India does not want to see
Pakistan strengthened, which it would be if Jammu and Kashmir joins
Pakistan. The slogan of Azadi is aimed at weakening Pakistan.
Independence would result in a territory that would have been a natural part
of Pakistan being taken away from it. But, then, compared to staying with
India, independence is a lesser evil.

Q: What if most people of Jammu and Kashmir wish to live in a secular or
democratic set-up, and not a Taliban-style 'Islamic' state?
A: We don't want to bring Taliban-type Islam, but the real Islam of the
Quran and the Practice (Sunnah) of the Prophet.

Best regards,

U G Barad

RESPONSE: Perhaps Goa has the answer and is showing the way forward; may
be this will help? :-

BJP routed in Margao

HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, NOV 1
The BJP suffered a complete rout in the elections for the Margao civic body
with candidates owing allegiance to the Congress emerging victorious in the
hustings.
This is the first time in the last decade-and-half that the BJP will have no
representation in the Margao civic body.
Candidates backed by Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, GPCC General Secretary
Vijay Sardessai and other Congress leaders won the polls with ease. Of the
20 candidates who made it to the civic body, Arthur D’Silva, who won from
Ward No 1 with a handsome margin of 625 votes, said that he is an
Independent candidate and owes no allegiance to any political party or
leader.
BJP leaders including two-time Councillor Narayan Fondekar, and the face of
BJP in Margao Rupesh Mahatme, besides BJP Fatorda Block President Durgadas
Prabhu bit the dust in the hustings. Candidates supported by the BJP
including Piedade Noronha in Ward No 3 and Purnanand Chari in ward No 8 also
lost the polls.
On the other hand, the candidates fielded and supported by Chief Minister,
Digambar Kamat and GPCC general secretary Vijay Sardessai won the polls with
comfortable margins. In the Fatorda area of the civic body, Sardessai
overcame a stiff challenge to his political career from his detractors, as
three of the four candidates – Bertha Cardozo, Joseph Silva and Gonzaco
Rebello — fielded by him made it to the civic body. The fourth candidate
Angelis Pereira lost by a slender margin of 35 votes at the hands of
two-time Councillor Raju Naik, who claimed support of the Chief Minister,
Digambar Kamat, Panchayat Minister, Babu Azgaonkar and BJP MLA Damu Naik.
The husband-wife duo of Sadanand and Babita Naik won the polls in style from
the Gogol Housing Board area, defeating BJP candidates.
Senior Congress leader and former minister, Luis Alex Cardozo’s son Tito
emerged victorious from Ward No 9 over BJP Block president Durgadas Prabhu
by a margin of 10 votes.
In the Margao area of the civic body, Congressmen or Congress backed
candidates won all the 11 seats at stake. Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat
backed candidates in eight wards registered comfortable wins, while Goa
Pradesh Youth Congress vice-president Pratima Coutinho backed by Churchill
Alemao-Vijay Sardessai-Monica Dias combine and former MMC Chairperson Doris
Texeira backed by Vijay Sardessai and Nitin Naik won from Colmorod and
Khareband wards respectively.
Outgoing Margao Congress Block President Dayanand won the polls from
Sirvodem ward, where the Chief Minister had publicly appealed to the people
to vote and elect former councillor Zarinha Shah.
Incidentally, Chief Minister-backed candidates won with ease in eight wards
of Margao assembly segment, defeating candidates fielded by the rival BJP.
Chief Minister’s cousin brother Laxmikant Kamat won from Ward No 18 by a
huge margin of 485 votes.
BJP leader, Rupesh Mahatme who had contested from Ward No 20 after his Ward
No 15 was reserved for OBC, failed to garner the much-required votes to
defeat Kamat-backed candidate Damu Shirodkar. While Damu polled 617 votes,
Rupesh had to be content with only 355 votes, losing the seat by a margin of
262 votes.
In Ward No 13, the Chief Minister’s candidate Rosy Pereira got the better
off the candidate fielded by the Azgaonkars and the BJP. While Pereira
polled 643 votes, Azgaonkar backed candidate Shazia Sheikh polled 423, while
the BJP candidate Leena Katkar polled only 238 votes.
A glance at the polls results would suggest that the electorate has voted
for new faces by rejecting a number of sitting councillors, including Raju
Shirodkar, Livramenta Barreto, Ramdas Hazare, former chairpersons Piedade
Noronha and Johnson Fernandes, Narayan Fondekar and Majusha Kaskar.

QUESTION:- Do you have any views as to why the BJP were trounced so
severely? Does the populace prefer corrupt governance or does it prefer
corrupt governance cum Communism? Don't you have any following at all in
Margao?

Hey Goa TNT writer ! !!
Yeh to Assembly Syndrome bhai. Highway to Hell or Sell provided it leads
them into the Well (of the House). 2000 was a massive crowd for
BJP-NCP-UGDP-SS-MGP-combine, was'nt it? Goans are too lazy to come out
onto the roads again and again after the elections, so this is the time.
Goans wasted their chance in Sattari. It should have been an Oscar -
Vishwajeet fight.
Goa definitely and urgently needs an Oscar (to give Bhashanam) in the
Assembly and if possible in the CM's chair to provide the Quick Fix to
Goa's problems. Present NH and Save Goa action leaders could then be
considered for an unemployment dole under DSSS or some rehabilitation
scheme.
