Re: [Goanet] 45% Goans alcoholics, AA statistics reveal
IS LEGAL ALCOHOL A PROBLEM IN GOA? I agree with George that the report about 45% of goans drinking legal alcohol was poorly written. It was the caption that was a blunder. But I do not agree that alcohol is not a serious problem in Goa. As expected this journalistic mistake has only further propelled the defensiveness and denial among many Goans who claim that alcoholism is not a problem in Amchem Goa. Mahatma Gandhi had said: Only those women who have drunkards as their husband know what havoc the drink devil works in the homes that were once orderly and peace-giving. While the premise that all who drink alcohol, legal or illegal, are not alcoholics is true, on the other hand being compelled to take a defence of 'social drinking' versus 'alcoholism' is itself a manifestation of a symptom of this disease. There is no definite cut off line as to whose drinking of legal alcohol is a problem and whose is not. Though alcoholism may be the ultimate stage in the disease ladder, one should not forget that the problem is preceded with alcohol abuse which in turn originates from social use. Whose drinking is social and whose is abuse is again a very complex issue and leaves ample scope for denial that one has a problem. So it is important to restrict the debate to: 'Is there a problem with legal alcohol in Goa or not? A study conducted by Caritas Goa in the early nineties had revealed that 45% of goan families have a problem with alcohol. Having a problem with alcohol in a family is as worse as having alcoholics. The AA report, according to some of us, has been too modest to claim that there are only 1 lakh alcoholics in Goa. For those of us who have worked in this field for several years and many others who have actually gone through the scourge of this disease, we could confidently reiterate the AA concerns that legal alcohol use or abuse is a threat to the social and political fabric of this State called Goa. Several of Goa's social and political problems originate from the very availability and consumption of this one substance called alcohol. So, let us stop denying and start accepting this fact. We are extremely happy that the Church in Goa has also started looking at this issue more seriously. As for the Alcoholics Anonymous, they have been doing a commendable job of giving hope to thousands of Goans who have a problem with legal alcohol. The Al-Anon offers hope to the families by teaching them to save themselves. I would conclude with an apt quote from Mahatma Gandhi, A snake can destroy the body, but the curse of drink corrupts the soul within. -Soter _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ tambdimati: the Goa review is a community blog of original _/ art, writing, music, news and commentary from and about the _/ smallest state in the subcontinent. check out the newest _/ member of the Goanet family daily at _/ http://www.tambdimati.com. _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/

[Goanet] INNOVATIVE IDEAS: Competition.
INNOVATIVE IDEAS: Competition The human mind is a storehouse of ideas, some of which have been turned through persistent effort into great discoveries and inventions. According to legend, it was a falling apple, a common enough sight, that intrigued Isaac Newton and led to the theory of gravity. Newton's work heralded a revolution that was at the heart of the Renaissance in Europe in the Middle Ages. Likewise, Thomas Edison, considered the greatest inventor, turned hazy ideas into brilliant inventions like the light bulb by his persistence. Thus, two elements have gone into such great breakthroughs in science and technology: ideas, or the creative instinct of the human mind, and persistence, or diligent effort. This power of innovation is latent in all, particularly the young, but is rarely developed or encouraged. Hence, the NIO Staff Club is organising a competition called “Innovative ideas” as part of the NIO Foundation Day celebrations on 1 January 2011. The competition is open to all, but is particularly aimed at the young undergraduate students in Goa. Hence, there are two categories: the first consists of undergraduate students from any college in Goa and the second consists of all others. The competition will be held on 13 December 2010 in the NIO Auditorium in Dona Paula. The best three entries in each category will win cash prizes of Rs. 5000/-, Rs. 3000/-, and Rs. 2000/-. The prizes will be presented on 1 January 2011 during the NIO Foundation Day celebrations in NIO. Terms and conditions: * The competition will be conducted in two categories. (1) Undergraduate students from any college in Goa. (2) Others. (This category includes post-graduate and school students, teachers or faculty, research scholars, and anyone who is not an undergraduate student at this time.) The category under which the entry is being submitted should be clearly stated. * Permanent staff of NIO may also send in their entries, but they will not be eligible for the cash prizes. * Entries may be sent by individuals or groups, but the groups should be limited to a maximum of three persons. * Each person or group may send only one entry. * Each entry should consist of a brief write-up, not exceeding 500 words. This write-up should set out clearly the motivation, the objective, and a plan (which may be tentative) for achieving the objective. If the idea builds on something existing, then a comment on the current status should be included. * The idea should be original and MUST NOT be downloaded from the Internet or be readily available in some form elsewhere. The idea must demonstrate out-of-the-box thinking in one of four themes. o Health o Environment o The Earth System (Earth, Atmosphere, and Ocean) o Energy and Technology * The competition will be conducted in two phases. o The 15 best ideas from each category will be selected by a high-level committee and the selected ideas will have to be presented before a jury on 13 December 2010 in the NIO Auditorium (Caridum). The presentation can be done either using an LCD projector or a demonstration (if it involves experimental hardware). * The best three entries in each category will be selected by the jury on the basis of these presentations. * The decision of the judges will be final. Key dates: * Last date for receiving entries: 19 November 2010. Mail the entries by 5:30 pm IST on 19 November 2010 to Mr. Sundaresh, crazyi...@nio.org * Those selected in the first phase of the competition (i.e., those who propose the 15 selected entries in each category) will be informed of their selection for the second phase of the competition by 5 December 2010. * The presentation in the second phase will be held on 13 December 2010 at the NIO Auditorium. Presentation of awards to the winners of the competition will be done on CSIR Foundation Day, 1 January 2011. _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ tambdimati: the Goa review is a community blog of original _/ art, writing, music, news and commentary from and about the _/ smallest state in the subcontinent. check out the newest _/ member of the Goanet family daily at _/ http://www.tambdimati.com. _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/

[Goanet] the Tanzanite Dance 2010 celebrated “U MOJA”; .....“the spirit of togetherness ”.
Global Goenkars !! A post from Jacinta Luis ... in Canada. - Forwarded Message From: Jacinta Luis jacintal...@jacintaluis.com To: Rene Barreto goan...@yahoo.co.uk Tanzanite Dance 2010 Dear Rene, Here is the article I wrote re: the Tanzanite dance. All the best, Jacinta Photo with four people: http://worldgoan.blogspot.com/2010/10/blog-post.html From left to right: Jerry Luis, Myra Remedios (Tanzanite President 2010), Bernardo Lynch (Jacinta's husband), Jacinta Luis oo Tanzanite Dance 2010 - by Jacinta Luis I had the opportunity to share in the spectacular gathering of the Canadian Tanzanite Goan community at the 2010 Tanzanite Dance In Toronto. I was invited to sing at this event on October 9, 2010. It was a great pleasure to share my song “GOA” which was written to celebrate World Goa Day; this day celebrates the recognition of Konkani as one of the official languages of India in1992. I recorded the CD single of the song “GOA” in order to be able to donate the profits from this song to the underprivileged children in Goa who do not have the opportunity to study music. Therefore, I was especially fascinated and pleased to see the important participation and contribution of the First Tanzanite Youth Committee to the event. The theme of the Tanzanite Dance celebrated “UMOJA”; this is the Swahili term that stands for “the spirit of togetherness”. I found this occasion very touching as it highlighted the main aspects of culture, family, and togetherness as a community including the need to be aware of the greater community and the importance of giving back to society. The Tanzanite Dance was a fundraiser to help the Msimbazi Orphanage in Dar-es-Salaam and to provide essential resources to a school. Funds were also raised to support the St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Zanzibar. I was happy to be a part of such a joyous, celebratory fund raising event where careful attention was given to every detail from the décor, food, music, costumes, UMOJA band performances and the exquisitely choreographed dances, which were performed by youth groups. Especially enjoyable to witness was the UMOJA Dance Group; the performance incorporated Tanzanian Canadian influences. I would like to thank the Tanzanite Committee, especially Sheila D’souza, the social secretary President, Myra Remedios, for inviting me to join in a most enjoyable evening. Bravo Canadian Tanzanite Goans of Toronto! www.jacintaluis.com === Reminiscing about the music I heard as I was growing up – by Jacinta Luis When I asked my father, Jerry Luis to talk about the band he co-founded with Banu Colaco, I was fascinated to learn that this was one of the earliest swing bands of Dar-es-Salaam and that so many wonderful musicians had the opportunity to play with the Jazz Swingers! Apparently, the band came to birth on December 31, 1947 due to unforeseen circumstances at the Goan Institute! So, this was the real deal called… improvisation! The Jazz Swingers became one of the most popular bands in Dar-es-salaam. Who does not remember dancing away to the sweet sounds of the Jazz Swingers from the mid-40’s until 1971?? Here is a list of some of the musicians who played in the Jazz Swingers over the years in Dar-es-salaam: Jimmy Fernandes Lacy (Brandy) Caldeira,Tony Ferns, Neri Ferns, Paxy Colaco, Manu Rodrigues, Mathew Fernandes, Gil Vaz, Nelson Fernandes, Eddie DeSouza, Louis Pereira Remy DeMello. The Jazz Swingers played at venues throughout Dar-es-salaam, including the Ocean Breeze, the Italian Club, the Greek Club and of course the Goan Institute, among others. I remember the sweet, swinging sounds of the Jazz Swingers when I was very little. Our home was always filled with musical life energy – what a gift! My Dad, Jerry Luis continued to play the accordion when we arrived in Montreal, Canada in 1971. He was part of a band with Pat D’Cruz, Lino Viegas, Hilary Fernandes Yorrick DeSouza. After he left Montreal for Toronto in 1983, he continued to play at various functions in Toronto, but concentrated most of his playing in the two choirs that my mother directs. Thanks to my Dad to all those creative musicians whose path enriched my life with their beautiful music and thanks to Tanzania for providing such an exquisite, lovely country to grow up in. www.jacintaluis.com GLOBAL GOAN MUSICIANS : ooo rene barreto The spirit of togetherness ... Instead, the crew members, upon reaching the jetty, used to lift the two long platforms using long iron rod/ hook. The two tracks (paltforms) were less than a meter wide each (with no railings), people used to exit first followed by the vehicles. Also, remember, the present sick 'pul' or the bridge took about 15 years to complete? Everytime we travel by ferryboat (Fare 25 paise each way), we exclaimed.. 'Kedna zatolo gai ho pul?' [Goanet] India’s topmost jazz, fusion, Blu es and rock bands ‘HFT’ and Thermal and a Quarter (TAAQ) to rock Goa on 18th November
In an age when protest seems to have gone out of style in contemporary rock music, Goa Chitra presents two of India’s topmost bands, Jazz fusion Band HFT and Thermal and a Quarter (TAAQ), the pioneers of Indian Jazz, Fusion and Rock that leads the rage against the political machine with rock music-based campaigns against voter apathy, intolerance, curbs on freedom of expression, and corruption. [Goanet] An Address at the Goan Convention
To The Honorable NRI Comissioner, Eduardo Faleiro Dear Sir Please refer to the Goanet recent postings, especially in regard to 'AN Address' for the Global Goan Convention in Kuwait on the 18th of this month. It is written by Floriano Lobo, and was well accepted by several NRI's. Furthermore it is well written, and in my humble opinion it spells out several historical and present day truths and happenings. I ask you Sir, that Floriano be invited at Government's expense, to present this paper at the Convention We know you have Goa's welfare as a priority, and we trust that you will move on this expeditiously. This might be the first step in a journey of a thousand miles. Re: [Goanet] Goan war veterans
U are perfectly right, Bernado, There are 'No Goan War Veterans' in Goa. The only War Veterens of Goan origin are those that were in the British and Indian Armed Forces, then under British Command. The so called Freedom Fighters are just all Fake, at least most of them. It is the Indian Armed Forces that liberated? (annexed) Goa, if at all; not the flimsy FFs!! I knew of some of these guys whose main grouse used to be against the Bhatkars and Gaunkaris of yesteryear. They were fighting for their 'personal' freedom, alright! They are now 'given'/ handed out the 'cloak' of FF cover; like a Burqa!! Disgusting Goa/ India Politics! BC Goan war veterans prepare to take on Portuguese celebration of colonialism By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar (CP) – 1 day ago PANAJI, India — The Portuguese have come back to Goa, and the men who fought to drive them out of this former colony nearly five decades ago are mobilizing again to stop them. The flashpoint for this admittedly less violent conflict is the celebration of 500 years of Portuguese influence over Goa, now a state in western India. How can anyone celebrate the arrival of oppressors? asked Nagesh Karmali, a poet and spokesman for the Freedom Fighters Association of Goa, who still limps from injuries suffered from torture in a Portuguese-run prison five decades ago. [Goanet] Migration for better quality of life.
floriano wrote : floriano.l...@gmail.comTo: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994!A Portuguese passport to get a third class citizenship of Europe??:-))Cheersflorianogoasuraj9890470896- Original Message - From: Arwin Mesquita arwinmesqu...@gmail.comTo: Goanet goa...@goanet.orgSubject: [Goanet] Goan Un-Necessary Migration MindsetRecently, I saw a BBC documentary on migration touched upon the sizeableGoan Community in Swindon, UK.The Documentary showed some UK Goans, making a difficult living via jobslike carpentry, cleaning, plumbing etc The Irony is that in Goa today, thesevery tasks can earn significant income and it?s very difficult to get suchlabour in Goa today. Goans are OK to do such jobs outside for a comparablelesser net savings vs. a good earning opportunity in Goa!! Comments : Camilo FernandesWhile I appreciate the personal views/comments of Floriano that A Portuguese passport to get a third class citizenship of Europe, I dont think anyone who has migrated to Europe is treated as a third class citizenship. On what basis did he make such conclusion. If anyone has migrated it is for economic reasons and for better quality of life. Can one compare the quality of life here to India? We have the same rights as the locals as regards jobs, medical facilities, school/colleges/universities, voting, housing etc. In fact due to rush of immigrants, the original inhabitants find it difficult to get houses, medical treatment, admission to schools/colleges, jobs and hospital treatment etc. There is nothing to stop one from taking up 2 jobs. I know many hard working Indians holding 2 jobs i.e. one full time and other part time or maybe weekend. Then here one only works 5 days with the weekend being off. Working hard pays off here. We c an live here comfortably while most Indians inspite of all the hard work in India, just exist. In fact I often wonder how the locals tolerate and accept all this and find themselves treated as second class citizens in their own country. Imagine an Indian/Goan in Goa being deprived of a job due to the job being taken away by a foreigner. We would just not tolerate this. Look at Mumbai, where in reality the rule of Thackereys Shiv Sena prevails.Leave foreigners they consider anyone who is a non Maharastrian as an outsider and use violent means against them. Inspite of we all being Indians their philosophy is Mumbai is only for Maharastrians and all Indians are equal only in name. As regards the Goan community in Swindon, I feel most Goans have got an uplift in lives only due to migrating here. Yes everyone may not get a choice job and has to take up any job atleast at the start but remember many of them are not eudacted and hence are and should be willing to take up any job. The important point is all jobs are respected here and all jobs are decently pa id jobs. No one looks down on any job. Even the office cleaner will come by car and is well respected and never looked down upon unlike India. I know so many Goans who were unemployed back home, are having fabulous jobs and can save a substantial amount. Initially one may have to be ready to take up any job without complaining as these jobs are also decently paid and can never be compared to India.Added to this are the other perks where one gets i.e. benefits, free education, medical//hospitalisation and in many cases even council housing. Most Goans initially would be staying in rented houses but very soon own their houses ofcourse taking up mortgages from banks. Contrast this with many Goans working in Gulf countries where there is so much discrimination and the locals are first class citizens while others no matter what position/status they hold are deprived of rights. I am not saying all is rosy but overall live here is so much comfortable. Even the law protects racial discrimination and it believes that there should be zero tolerance. After a reasonable period say 5 to 6 years, one is eligible to get British citizenship and then one is eligible for all benefits enjoyed by the locals. There is no pollution, no overcrowding pushing and no mad rush, no corruption and I may add it is like living decently and not just existing as many do in India. If there was no corruption, pollution, good and affodable education, medical facilities, well paid jobs, decent affordable housing etc. one would never have thought of migrating even if an opportunity arose. It is only thanks to the Portuguese that we got the right to come to migrate to Europe. Ashwin says that in Goa many tasks can earn significant income and Goans are ok to do such jobs outside for a comprarable lesser net savings v/s. a good earning opportunity in Goa. I dont understand how he can compare earnings here with earnings back home. What about the quality of life i.e. pollution, overcrowding, lack of affordable medical facilities,
[Goanet] Authentic Goan Caju Feni
[Goanet] Authentic Goan Caju Feni There are different types of cahew fenni brands in the market, Most of them ar ‘pochok’ mild or adulterated or duplicate A bottle of cahew fenni price ranges from Just Rs. 45 to Rs.200. Good quality is always expensive. There are some brand which clearly mention on it label saying ‘Tripled distilled’ We tried that, and found satisfactory (We haven’t try all the brands though). Some Bar or Dukon or abkar or gadhi sell by the bottles saying locally produced. No label just filled into empty whisky bottles etc. Such prices ranges from Rs.70-150. But most of the time we find it is a ‘pochok’ too. When visited tiracol fort, we bought some mineral water bottles filled with Kazu fenni And it was sold for just Rs.45, again it was ‘pochok’ We tried at one of the spice farms too and but was not to our satisfaction. Good quality fenni does not require market to sell. Often it sold to it’s regular customers and other by the word of mouth. Here demand is greater than the actual supply. Such product are rarely seen at liquor shops. Following few empty bottles I found in our kitchen, two of them were good, For illustration purpose only http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextra2/5179198622/sizes/l/ Konnbi or konnonb: A place where juice is extracted. This place where people are sitting/standing is called Konnbi http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk5/2437001399/sizes/l/ The 3 heaps each you see in the last two pics are called ‘soponn’ Not ‘sopon’ (dream) The above is for larger plantation But this one is for smaller plantation – say bout 5-10 bucket a day Konnomb or konnbi (A mini version) http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextra2/5179471506/sizes/l/ briefly explained http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextra2/5179471506/ It appears that for extraction of cashew juice, one needs a Excise Licence. I know some one who renew his licence every year by paying about Rs.25 See annexure a licence format. Goddo It is a byproduct of Toddy (or cashew juice) It’s dark brownish waste liquid. One needs to throw it out before refilling with fresh juice or toddy. Coconut or toddy Goddo is served as ‘Dhonn’ for pigs. Some one said, urak is re-distilled by adding ’niro’ to obtain fenni. I am sure he meant to say ‘Caju juice’ and not Niro Niro is the last thing that oozes out from the ‘soponn’ Niro is clear juice drinkable by all men and women and children. See the last part in this clip - oncreen info http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY6Qlm7Q3PI How you take your fenni? Some tke with with coke (or soda) Most Bomboimkar used to take it with water But I like it dry. Half quarter is my limit sometime more with full tandoori chicken Fyi, Feni is now GI (Geopraphical indication) for Goa as is Vodka for Russia or scotch for scotland. In other words, Feni is patented no other state or country can claim 'feni' as theirs. Feni is also spelt as fenni, feny etc Shake the bottle well, and if the 'fenn' (fiz/froth) last longer, then that must be a good quality fenni. [Goanet] Important Dance Update
Hello everyone! We have received an outstanding response to the dance. I guess going online for payments helped! Below is the link for those of you that haven't signed up yet. http://goansofamerica.com/events.html We have added a few more color sections, now that the initial ones have filled up / sold out. The Gray, Orange and Light Blue areas are still open and all 3 areas are open to everyone. So, please pick your color and book your tickets ASAP. FAQ's: 1) Will I receive a ticket in the mail? A: No. You will receive an email from PayPal as soon as you pay. That is your ticket. Please print it and bring it to the dance. 2) Do I need to reserve a specific table number? A: No you don't. You reserve a color section. PayPal at this time doesn't have the functionality to reserve specific tables. We will add that functionality for future events when it becomes available. 3) Do I need to sign up for a PayPal account? A: No you don't. Just use your credit card online and PayPal will process that transaction without needing a PayPal account. 4) What happens if I pay by check? A: If you pay by check, you'll be assigned to one of the White (Open Seating) tables. We can only allocate the Color sections to those that pay by credit card as PayPal does it for us. We realize that this is a new process and a learning experience for everyone. We apologize for any hurdles. We also appreciate all the positive feedback from all of you that found this system extremely convenient. We sold over 200 tickets in the first 2 days and we've sold a 100 more since then. THANK YOU!! Those of you who are yet to book your seats, please do so online. It's convenient and fast and extremely safe. PayPal takes care of the online security. Thank you once again for your support. We look forward to seeing all of you on the 18th!!
