[Goanet-News] Goanet Reader: Goa's trail of many liberations (Teotonio R. de Souza)
Goa's trail of many liberations Teotonio R. de Souza teodeso...@gmail.com Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, Lisboa Om... Asatoma Sadgamaya Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya Mrutyorma Amritamgamaya Om... Lead me from the untruth to truth. Lead me from darkness to light. Lead me from death to immortality. (Brhadaranyaka Upanishad -- I.iii.28) The task of a politician is to negotiate ways and means of governance, particularly in situations where conflicting interests are difficult to reconcile. Politics is concerned primarily with the challenges of the present. The political strategies choose those elements or aspects of the past that appear most suitable to their aims, ignoring, minimizing or combating those facets that seem undesirable for the political objectives. The task of a historian is very different, but not less difficult than that of a politician. It demands viewing the past with equanimity and handling the evidence as a judge, not as an advocate. All this requires distancing from the present-day political and ideological pressures. Unfortunately, historians too are normal citizens and can succumb to their needs of the present and fall in line with the political choices. When such compromises lead to blatant manipulation of historical evidence, it is almost tantamount to historical prostitution, violating the professional rules of historical research. Called to speak at an event like this, when we are gathered to commemorate, somewhat in anticipation, the Golden Jubilee of Goa's liberation from a colonial regime that lasted nearly four and half centuries, it is but natural that the expectations of the audience will demand that I present my balance of this long period which many of us have witnessed at different levels and with different consequences to personal or family interests. I will certainly do that, but am very conscious that my balance remains as relative as anyone else's, depending obviously upon the quantity and the quality of information and analysis that each one brings to it. Emotional assessments based largely on hearsay may be dismissed. I am presenting my viewpoint based upon nearly thirty-five years of dedicated search for historical evidence related to Goa's recent and more distant past. Those interested can find my findings published in books, articles and online. I wish to avail of this precious short time and unique opportunity to formulate some questions that I consider relevant if we wish to advance further and understand better our collective past. These considerations have epistemological implications and require questioning the meaning of 'liberation' for us, as individuals and as community. Fundamental for this questioning are the concepts of time and space, issues of culture and identity. These in turn will require answers to questions like: What is Goa and who are Goans? Who are the autochtonous inhabitants in Goa (as gavDe and kuNbi are often referred)? How many decades or centuries are needed for an immigrant to be accepted as bhitorle or 'niz Goenkar'? Who determines these time limits and conditions of acceptance? Obviously, most answers boil down to social, political and economic constructions imposed by changing dominant groups over time that is less chronological than mythical. Evidence grows scantier as we proceed backwards, and much of it was fabricated by the concerned and interested groups. For those unable to have access to reading or writing, the production of myths and folklore, rituals and magic, were the means of justifying, imposing and perpetuating some social structures. That is how we have the fabrication of Parashurama myth and the caste system, and we know how strong is unfortunately their cultural power and grip. It is in this perspective of changing dominant groups that made use of Goa's strategic coastal location in western India that I have written recently about the many strangers who made Goa their home. We need to have sufficient emotional freedom and capacity to study Goa's past as a very long history of older bhaile trying to keep out of privileged niches the new or more recent bhaile. It is an ongoing struggle for appropriating and preserving natural and other economic and social gains through shifting cultures and politics. A good pointer towards the kind of research that we need, is a recent publication of a Goan from Aldona, and settled in Switzerland, Bernardo Elvino de Souza. The book entitled 'The Last Prabhu', seeks to trace the origins of Goan population through genetic genealogy, or through DNA analysis and comparison of haplotypes. The archeological and documentary evidence for genealogical studies has severe time limitations. The genetic ancestry can be traced back to the earliest diasporas of humanity. History

[Goanet] COLUMN: Will the voters of Benaulim constituency elect a disqualified candidate?
COLUMN: Will the voters of Benaulim constituency elect a disqualified candidate? Will the voters of Benaulim constituency elect a disqualified candidate? By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 Last week the Congress party showed some spine by disqualifying Valanka Alemao for using her father PWD minister Churchill Alemao to garner support for her candidature for the post of president of Goa Youth Congress in a bid to clinch her victory. However she was caught in an act of deceit, trying to entice the voters allegedly through money power, muscle power which is the true influence of her father. Churchill Alemao has become a veteran in using such methods to win elections. His claims that people vote him to power because they love him and his family, this in my opinion is simply lip service. Since his entry in politics his success or victory was largely due to intimidation or lure. And the same tactics were sought to be used for the very first election that Valanka Alemao was contesting. Though educated, it is surprising that she is not averse to such tactics. For Alemao's it is the victory at any cost that counts. Morals, ethics and values have never been their forte. Thank God, Valanka have been stopped in her tracks of vitiating the election process or otherwise she would have continued the trend for assembly election just like her father and uncle. All along they have used, misused and abused Goans for their own sake allegedly to amass wealth. And Valanka seems to be showing similar traits. For more than a couple of years now, rumour mill have been screaming aloud that this young lady had taken over the business of being a collection agent of her father. Of course she has been confronted with this aspect by the media, but her reply was 'show me the proof.' However, the amount of money that is being spent to promote Valanka's candidature for the coming assembly elections in Benaulim constituency is astronomical. Almost every week new banners are being put up with her picture in the constituency for some activity or the other and the common factor is that she is always the chief guest. Where does she get the funding from -- is shrouded in mystery. For PWD minister Churchill Alemao the victory of her daughter Valanka is of utmost importance and he is ready to stoop to any level to achieve that goal. The government led by Chief minister Digambar Kamat have put up with the threats and tantrums of the PWD minister for far too long. Any decision of the government, wherein Churchill does not stand to benefit, he would blackmail the government with threats to resign or topple the government. In case of Valanka's disqualification, it was the decision of the election commission of Indian Youth Congress election committee, so where is the question of the holding the government responsible and the state to ransom. At the most an appeal could be filed with the appropriate authority. The Congress to prove its worth and its credibility should accept the resignation of both the Alemao brothers not only as ministers but also as primary members. At the same time serious consideration are overdue of their blackmailing tactics. In return Congress party should threaten the Alemao family with Income Tax raids and CBI investigation on the wealth amassed by both the brothers in the last four years. This will clearly indicate that by purchasing votes by doling out Rs. 500 to voters, that these two brothers have made politics their business and have allegedly accumulated wealth disproportionate to their known source of income. Of course there will be accusation against the party for witch hunting and harassment, but if two persons can hold the state government to ransom what better treatment do they deserve? As it is we have witnessed like never before the gang-rape of Goa and its exchequer in the last five years by the Digambar led coalition government. When I say government it does not only mean its ministers though they have been the biggest beneficaries but also the MLAs. Almost on daily basis a new scam surfaces but the Congress party is doing the ostrich’s act so far. However as per the latest developments in Delhi, it seems that Churchill and his brother Joaquim have got a reprieve, however the party refused to revoke the disqualification and Valanka had to swallow the humble pie. The Congress party has assured the brothers to seriously consider the candidature of younger Alemaos, however Congress is rarely known to keep its promise and who knows it better then Churchill himself. All in all it was a face saving exercise for the Alemaos. Has justice been done now? If at all Valanka contests the next assembly election be it on any party ticket, she will always remained tagged as disqualified candidate. But one fact is clear, Churchill and Joaquim stand exposed as they had never tendered their resignation in writing to the chief

[Goanet] photo identity
Identity cards mania Indians are now becoming crazy collecting multiple photo identity cards, when any one card can only establish true identity. Earlier there was only the historical ration card and passports with a bare privileged few. Then came the students cards, followed by ATM, credit cards. The Pan card has become compulsory for opening of accounts and financial transactions in particular The bank pass book also serves as an identity now fixed with the photo.. Senior citizen cards issued by social security department and senior citizens forum are also handy, but SCF cards are not recognised for state Govt. facilities. The new motor driving licence comes handy The post office had started issuing photo identity cards for people. who were hard put to obtaining EPIC due to residential proof of the ration card Employers have their own photo identity cards Now the Govt is starting to introduce the Unique photo identity card Every one around in India is crazy in sporting and possessing one Photo I.D or the other Can there be not one card to establish the identity The seer duplication and multiplication need best be avoided and hope the UIN will replace the multiplicity of cards Nelson Lopes Chinchinim 9850926276.
[Goanet] Churchill's photo on prayer cards irks Muslims
This is with reference to news reports that some Muslims from Davorlim are upset with Churchill for printing his photo on the prayer cards. ( http://goa4u.com/2011/07/29/churchill%E2%80%99s-photo-on-prayer-schedule-cards-irks-muslims/ ) On this issue, I find the community leader Sheikh Jina’s stance hypocritical because on the one hand he seems to have no objection to funding of the printing by Churchill but is only opposed to the 'PWD Minister' printing his picture on it. His religious sentiments appear to be hurt. Not his moral ones where he sees nothing wrong in accepting the undue favor from the Minister from Salcete. This seems to be the basic problem with politics and governance in Goa. Being a land of numerous events and festivals, we keep approaching our politicians to fund us. Come Id or Diwali or Christmas and there will be the groups who will approach the local politician for a sponsorship. Then, there are also the beat shows, the Dances, the College Festivals, the Narkasurs and the Tournaments where the Politician is expected to contribute handsomely. It is natural that any politician who will fund such an event will demand his or her pound of flesh in exchange. For every investment, there must be a proportional return. These are the rules of the trade for everyone. The mileage will come in various forms, through names appearing on the banners, or on the free books or via photographs which is what has happened in the present case. But one cannot single out Churchill for fault here. During festivals and occasions, there are many others who are doing virtually the same. If you take a round through the streets of Goa during festivals, you will see the photographs of politicians plastered all over with their greetings. Newspapers too will be full of such advertisements. Now I am no supporter of the Alemaos. I strongly detest their style of functioning, their constant political blackmail and the 'Family Raj' they want to impose on the rest of Goa but I cannot hold them at fault in this present case. The fault lays with us people. Politicians- being politicians – will seek their mileage in exchange for their ‘sponsorships’. So instead of opposing our politicians on the grounds of “hurt religious sentiments”, let us resolve to oppose them on moral grounds. The people must resolve not to trade their votes for the odd “sponsorship” or two. The corrupt and the ‘Mercenary’ politicians must be booted out! Cheers, Sandeep
[Goanet] Mining discussed at the Goa Global Convention
I would like to take this opportunity if I may, to clarify two points made by Melvyn Fernandes writing on Goan Convention: Getting back to the Goan Convention, my excitement was so great that by the time it came round I was too burnt out to participate. However, the Goan communication network the way it is, family, friends and global guests kept me fully informed and entertained as to what went on, in fact I felt I could have started by very own blog without ever attending. The next hot topic I hear presented was mining, our esteemed Goan guests must have found it interesting that having travelled half way round the globe to be with us in London they had to hear what was happening in their own country, of course it appears no-one can present a problem and a solution better than we can, I mean Powerpoint, Graphics, etc. One attendee said he really enjoyed the presentation made by a Brazilian lady. Forgive me into thinking but I thought these mines were in Goa! Well, the person who presented the issue on mining in Goa , is GOAN , born and brought up in Goa and a fluent Konkani speaker, who visits Goa frequently. Yes my name is Carmen Miranda but I am not Brasilian. The person who introduced me before I spoke, for some unknown reason mentioned that I had just returned from a holiday in Brazil, and that was enough to create confusion as many people indeed thought I lived in Brazil. As the Convention organisers allocated plenty of time to discuss Goa's past history , I decided to talk about pressing issues of the present, and chose to speak about mining, because if we don't bring this industry under firm control, Goa itself will become history. Secondly, for your information it is in fact the Goans in Goa who most need the information I shared at the Convention, (and twice at the Festival on Sunday) because most Goans in Goa in fact are not aware of the seriousness of the devastation going on in their backyards. Yes they know there is mining and it is causing some inconvenience to villagers in the interior and believe that is prosperity .Well, if the majority of Goans in Goa were well informed and aware, they would have by now got rid of the politicians who are ultimately responsible for allowing the rape of Goa's hinterland as the consequences of such environmental degradation will seriously affect the future of many generations to come. That is why I began my talk by dispelling some myths about the importance of mining to Goa's economy and employment. Yes the powerpoint had some powerful visual evidence of what I was talking about , which I believe brought tears to the eyes of many goans who saw it for the first time and were totally shocked and unaware of extent of destruction. I don't know how many thousands of Goans were at the Festival, but all I can tell you is that Save Goa Campaign UK tent at the Festival was buzzing with visitors and in one afternoon we got more than a 1000 signatures for our petition to the Chief Minister of Goa and his Cabinet to take immediate measures to start phasing out mining. Mining in Goa is not an issue to joke about. The fact that I was even allowed to speak on mining at the Convention is a great achievement by the G.O.A. who hosted the Convention in London and I thank them on behalf of Save Goa Campaign UK for their unconditional support. [Goanet] mid day meals unsaf
Food fort thought Mid day meal idea is not specifically tailored to places like Goa. Goa is well placed on income index The mid day meal is not suitable for Goa. Most of the parents are well placed to provide suitable, nourishing snacks to the children and the others have plenty of pocket money to splurge Besides many simply do not take advantage of meals ,even though they are counted The menu is not palatable to many a student with their background. It is the migrant ,poor population ,who benefit from the scheme, since many may be coming to schools hungry and not sure of the meal at home on return. The menu should only be catered to those who opt , with the parents written consent This will reduce the numbers, so that the meager amount sanctioned could be better utilised It is presumed that the tenders are well scrutinised, but the doubts of underhand dealings are not unearthly to assume the process of Govt. in tendering. The parents through P.T.A. should be on the board ,when such tenders are to awarded to their children The schools starting at 8.a.m and closing at 1.30p.m. with the recess of 15 minutes do not need the mid day meals, since they reach homes for the lunch The onus on the schools and the Headmaster to be guinea pigs to certify the edibility of the mid day meals is ridiculous. The parents of needy children be given weekly cash incentives, deducting the days of absence ,that in a way will ensure regular attendance. The other better alternative would be to entrust the parents of the schools to prepare the food. They will have no vested interest to profit The scheme should not be forced because of huge grants allotted to every state and the need to utilise the same Statistics show that Govt of Goa is underutilising the grants and hence the inspecting staf is under pressure to consume the quota. The frequent , recurring food poisoning of students is alarming and rightly scares the parents and children as well. Are the suppliers liable to the damage and accountable, or is it just another incident to be ignored and forgotten? There must be a serious rethink on the scheme, applying to the vulnerable population in selected areas and to limited numbers, who are socially disadvantaged The scheme should be motivated not with the interest of self groups, but the wellfare of the students Do not subject the parents and the students to the trauma of food poisoning through mid day meals Nelson Lopes Chinchinim 9850926276.
[Goanet] Sneezing at bramahnical polemics ...
Hitler's Thousand Years Reich lasted for about 12 years and though many Germans sympathized with the Nazi principles during the Second World War, their attitude towards this pernicious ideology changed overnight with the defeat of the Nazis in 1945, Today German people express horror if they are even remotely associated with the Nazis. The N (nazi ) word is rarely uttered during their conversations. So much is the dislike of the German people for the failed Hitler's regime. Now take the brahmanic ideology of India. It was imposed upon the Indian society for a couple of millennia. And yet what is the history of India especially during the last thousand years prior to 1947 ? A sad history indeed which no other people on planet earth would have embraced as their own. And yet, we talk about brahmanical this and brahminical that. Re: [Goanet] Goa mining issue reaches corporate AGM in London... (Carmen Miranda)
The Vedanta AGM, London, 27 July 2011. Report by Carmen Miranda carmitamira...@gmail.com The Vedanta AGM was dominated by pressure groups that fired a barrage of questions and accusations mainly about the company's activities in Orissa and Chhattisgarh. I took a chance, raised my hand, was given the microphone and spoke about the issue of mining in Goa. -snip- Last but not least, I established contact with the Agarwal brothers themselves which I understand is an extremely difficult thing to do, and with the Chief Executive SM Mehta, who I hope to lobby in future regarding their activities in Goa. After the AGM I was having a cup of tea and talking, well, actually complaining to his Chief Executive and his brother Navind Agarwal, about what they were doing in Goa. As I was doing so, I was rather taken by surprise when Anil Agarwal came out of his way to shake hands with me. At least they now know we exist and we want them to phase out mining from Goa. - Congrats Carmen, It is amazing what one determined person can do. It becomes very rewarding to meet people at AGM's who think the way you do and make the effort to go out an demand change. Sooner or later, investors i.e. the people who really own the shares in the mining giants inform those running the firm that they will not accept abuse. Thankfully, here in Toronto, the giant pension funds of the unions make sure the companies they have invested in are compliant with all the environmental laws. Lastly, the amount of money involved in Indian iron ore mining is mind boggling. Here is an article for the Toronto newspaper, The Globe and Mail. Mervyn1626Lobo http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/international-news/asian-pacific/india-probe-exposes-36-billion-mining-scandal-hits-opposition/article2111468/ India probe exposes $3.6-billion mining scandal, hits opposition by JAMES POMFRET NEW DELHI Published Wednesday, Jul. 27, 2011 An independent-led inquiry implicated a prominent Indian opposition politician in a $3.6 billion illegal iron ore mining scandal on Wednesday, underscoring a need to overhaul and better regulate India’s booming but graft-ridden mining sector. The extensive report into mining graft in southern Karnataka state accused its chief minister, B.S. Yediyurappa, and other key officials of causing at least 160 billion rupees ($3.6 billion) in lost state revenues between 2006 and 2010 from illegal mining and a litany of abuses. “This inquiry found that there’s a large scale involvement of officials, powerful people, both in administration as well as in the government,” independent ombudsman Justice Santosh Hegde, who spearheaded the report, told reporters. Several other senior officials with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) including the state tourism minister Janardhana Reddy, were also named in the report. “I have not done any mistake. I don’t think I need to worry about anything,” Mr. Yediyurappa told reporters. He has rejected calls for his resignation. Other BJP officials were not immediately available for comment. While the report is not legally binding the political implications are far reaching and analysts, as well as several members of the BJP, predicted several resignations would follow. With India’s ruling Congress party coalition reeling from a spate of graft cases including a multi-billion dollar telecoms scandal, the spotlight on the BJP could give the stricken government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh some respite. Hegde said 400 firms and 787 people had been implicated in a web of corruption involving mining, transport, customs and shipping officials, leading to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of iron ore going missing from mines across the state. Illegal mining is a major problem across India, as powerful businessmen, often in cahoots with officials, plunder the country’s mineral wealth to meet surging demand for commodities like iron ore in places such as China. India is the world’s No. 3 iron ore supplier after Australia and Brazil. Karnataka is India’s second largest iron ore producing state but deep-rooted graft and conflicts led authorities to once even impose an export ban that spiked global iron ore prices. Lax oversight and patchy laws are prompting parliament to propose a new national mining bill that will open up the sector to foreign investment, create an independent regulator and impose profit sharing arrangements with villagers. “This is a transitionary phase for the industry,” said Basant Poddar, with the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries for Southern India. “Business and politics should be kept out as many of businessmen are simply caught in the line of crossfire.” The mining scandal again underscores the need for India – Asia’s third largest economy after China and Japan – to overhaul strategic sectors including retail, property and mining, to raise growth and lure
Re: [Goanet] Mining discussed at the Goa Global Convention
Carmen Miranda wrote: Secondly, for your information it is in fact the Goans in Goa who most need the information I shared at the Convention, (and twice at the Festival on Sunday) because most Goans in Goa in fact are not aware of the seriousness of the devastation going on in their backyards. -- Carmen, This is what Goan Global Conventions should be all about i.e. a platform to display and discuss current problems and work on issues that effect our future. I am not surprised of your contention that there were attendees at the conference who had little or no knowledge of the ecological devastation caused by mining in Goa. There is similar ignorance with Goans here in Toronto too. Even people who go to Goa every winter are not aware of the devastation done to the environment as very little is reported by the news media in Goa. I congratulate you for making people aware of what is going on their backyards. My congrats too on your petition drive. I hope it makes it to the internet where all those who are concerned with the issue can sign it. Mervyn Lobo
[Goanet] Lokayukta report names Adani, JSW Steel, Sesa Goa, NMDC
Lokayukta report names Adani, JSW Steel, Sesa Goa, NMDC Samar Halarnkar Three of India’s leading companies, Adani Enterprises Ltd, JSW Steel Ltd and Sesa Goa Ltd, and three public sector institutions—including NMDC Ltd, India’s largest mineral producer—are among hundreds of smaller companies accused by the Karnataka Lokayukta of involvement in the state’s growing mining scandal. The intricate, ingenious details of a variety of crimes, including bribery and fraud, are listed over 464 pages of justice Santosh Hegde’s report, a copy of which is with *Mint*. Shares of Adani, JSW, Sesa and NMDC tumbled as news leaked of their involvement with illegal mining and exports from Karnataka’s Bellary district. One of India’s largest trading houses, the $6.4 billion (`28,290 crore) Adani Enterprises has been accused of forging permits, and bribing officials from at least seven state departments and politicians to export iron ore illegally from Belekeri port in Karnataka between 2006 and 2011. “The Adani Enterprises has paid the bribes (sic) for getting undue favour for illegal exports,” said the report. The Lokayukta has recommended cancelling the company’s export lease at the port; blacklisting and barring it “from participating in any future contract, grant or lease, etc. by the government”; criminal cases against officials and recovery of bribes. “We cannot comment on the issue now as we are still reviewing the situation and are consulting our lawyers for the future course of action. We may offer our version in a day or so,” said an official spokesperson for Adani Enterprises. The $5 billion JSW Steel, a part of the OP Jindal Group, avoided state levies between 2006 and 2010 by receiving excess iron ore in overloaded trucks, paying only royalties due on the normal weight of trucks. More than 1.2 million tonnes (mt) were so processed by the company. The excess minerals were the property of the state. “Hence, it amounts to theft,” said the report. Justice Hegde said the state government “should take immediate steps” to recover `342 crore from the suppliers and JSW Steel, which has a steel plant in Bellary district, the mining nerve centre. “We haven’t read a copy of the report yet, so it’s too premature for us to comment on the issue,” JSW spokesperson Sharmila Banerjee said. The company is also accused of transferring, through a trail of bank transactions, `10 crore to an educational trust run by the family of indicted chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in March 2010. There are three public sector companies named as well, the most prominent being NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer and exporter, run by the ministry of steel. It is accused of under-invoicing “high-grade” iron-ore exports by as much as 40% in 478 suspected cases between 2006 and 2010. The loss caused: `2,222 crore. “The public sector undertaking has incurred a huge loss,” said justice Hegde. “The concerned ministry government (sic) of India may take note of it and take further needful action.” Hegde’s report says that after the state government took a decision on 28 July 2010 to ban the issue of permits to destinations for exports, the investigators found “83 exports with a total quantity of 17,58,336 MT (metric tonnes) of iron ore”. It provides a list that includes Sesa Goa. Its name recurs in a table sourced from *Shree Mallikarjun Shipping Pvt. Ltd *, which indicates the companies and persons involved in illegal exports, the supplier of iron ore to these companies and the stacks at Belekeri port. Sesa Goa declined to comment. NMDC chairman Rana Som did not take calls seeking comment. The *National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd*—its majority shareholding is with the Union government—one of India’s largest cooperatives meant to help farmers, is accused of illegal exports of iron ore to China between 2005 and 2006. “All the trade transactions and transport of iron ore to various ports is dubious and require further investigation,” justice Hegde said in the report. *Mysore Minerals Ltd* (MML), a Karnataka government company with 40 mining leases—one is a joint venture with JSW—is accused of misusing permits by classifying iron ore as waste between 2008 and 2010 to 90 companies and individuals. “It is clear that the officials of MML have knowingly committed irregularities and illegalities,” the report said, recommending that they be “identified and dealt (sic) in accordance with law after conducting proper investigation”. In a meticulous listing of officials and their bribery rates at Belekeri Port, justice Hegde noted that bribe amounts—“unaccounted and paid in cash”—had “progressively increased” from`22 lakh in 2004-05 to `48 lakh in 2005-06 to `66 lakh in 2006-07 and `1.28 crore in 2007-08. On Friday, shares of Adani Enterprises fell 20.97% to `586.10, JSW declined 5.49% to `774.20, NMDC fell 2.6% to `240.15 and Sesa Goa dropped 5.06% to ` 275. *Sridhar K. [Goanet] 21 Anniversary World Goa Day -Writing Event invitation
Dear all This August will be the 21st Anniversary of the conception of World Goa Day. I note that the ugly boil of caste still appears and needs to be lanced once and for all preventing our mtv and wiii nutured generation from being infected. My refined understanding of this subject came in the year of our Lord 2004 through scintillating reading end to end Silvano Barbosa's hardback The Sixth Night. This well researched material points out why our community behaves the way it does. Although astonished when Ben Antao did a review I am not surprised to hear that Silvano got a barrage of hate mail, this can only come from ignorance. In the United Kingdom I tried to publicise the book on Goan Voice to no avail. After all we still live in a society of getting the formula right for two Goans to agree. The majority of us are too busy with better things to do rather than doing things better. I am elated to inform readers that this gem of a novel is now available for download all over the world from Kindle Amazon.com. In response to an article in Contact, the magazine of the Goan Chaplaincy written by goanetter, the late Dr. Cornel Da Costa on Quixotic Catholicism among the Catholic Goans on Catholicism and the caste system in Goa in which he states that the systems of belief between Roman Catholicism and Hindu caste belief are entirely incompatible and contradictory, Rose Fernandes wrote: Caste, class or whatever other name you wish to use, may be based on a different system but exists in societies all over the world, not just among Goans. In England, predominantly a Christian country, you have the aristocracy class, the upper middle class, the middle class, the lower middle class and the working class which still exist today just as you have the Bamons, the Chardos, the Mahars and the Kunbis in Goa. Those who appear thankful that the class system has evarporated in the Western world will, I am sure, have their belief shattered if they spend time in villages in England speaking to the gentry there. In an article by Kevin Hobson The Indian Caste System and the British, he stated The caste system had been a fascination of the British since their arrival in India in the 18th century. Coming from a society that was divided by class, the British attempted to equate the caste system to the class system. As late as 1937 Professor T C. Hodson stated that Class and caste stand to each other in relation of family to species. The general classification is by classes, the detailed one by castes. In this respect, Kate Fox has written a fascinating book Watching the English (ISBN 978-0-340-81886-2). On page 117 of the book she has written a paragraph under The Brag-wall Rule that could easily mirror our people. In her book she writes: Another helpful class-indicator is the siting of what Americans would call your brag wall. In which room of your house do you display prestigious awards you have won, or photographs of yourself shaking hands with famous people? If you are middle-class or below, these items will be proudly on show in your sitting room or entrance hall or some other very prominent place. For the upper-middles and above, however, the only acceptable place to exhibit such things is the downstairs loo. This trick is smart in both senses of the word posh and clever): visitors are highly likely to use the downstairs loo at some point, and to be impressed by your achievements, but by displaying them in the loo you are making a joke out of them (taking the piss, even) and thus cannot be accused of either boasting or taking yourself too seriously. (NB: For readers who are not familiar with the term loo it is used in England for toilet.) In the chapter on Dress Codes for females on page 286, Kate Fox also writes Too much jewellery (especially gold jewellery, and necklaces spelling out one's name or initials), too much make-up, over-coiffed hair, fussy-dressy clothes, shiny tights and uncomfortably tight, very high-heeled shoes are all lower-class hallmarks, particularly when worn for relatively casual occasions. And for Dress Codes for males on page 290, Kate Fox writes large, bulky, ostentatious metal watches, especially gold ones, are a lower class signal - even if they are frightfully expensive Rolexes (or those James-Bond-wannabe gadgetty ones that tell you what time it is in six countries and will work at the bottom of the sea and withstand a nuclear attack). Around May this year I was delighted to come across Goa Book Club and was fascinated to update myself that we had so many authors. The post that caught my attention was Goan Short Stories Competion 2011 from Savia Viegas with the various prizes. I say this because when I was once a teenager and entered a worldwide essay competition run through the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi, my entry came two thousand and something but at least I got a hard copy of the winning first fifty. Can I request that the Organisers of the Goan Short Stories Competition 2011

Well appreciated this, Sandeep. Incidentally, I had mentioned the case of Fr. Agapito of Uguem hobnobbing with the Alemaos to the extent of dramatically accepting a cheque of Rs. 2 lacs on stage ( with hall packed with applauding peope) to renovate the chapel. I had asked a question as to where is the 'code of conduct' of the Archbishop of Goa even if the election code of conduct was not in force. Somehow, I am surprised with no comment at all from any quarters on this from anyone. I have been told many a times that I have to promote the Goa Su-Raj Party which I helped form 11 years ago. I have always retorted by saying that if I promote the Party, then I will use you the way I want to use you. Instead, I want 'you' to promote the party. That way you will benefit with good governance not money. saying that this Party will stay where it is rather than get into the rat-race of promoting itself. [Goanet] NEWS: 'Explosive' mining report seems to 'implode' Karnataka BJP (Karnataka Newsletter, IANS)
'Explosive' mining report seems to 'implode' Karnataka BJP (Karnataka Newsletter) By V.S. Karnic Bangalore, July 29 (IANS) From scam-hit Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to backbencher lawmakers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), everyone Friday proclaimed to be a disciplined soldier of the party but quite a few baulked at accepting the high command directive on a change in guard in the wake of the explosive Lokayukta report on illegal mining in the state. Indeed, there was a very real danger that the differences could cause an implosion in the BJP. Groups of ministers, state legislators and parliament members of the party from Karnataka kept repeating to the media through the day that no one is above the party and all of us will obey the party directives. At the same time, they were firm that the party leadership accept their demands -- Yeddyurappa to have a decisive say in all matters of the party and the new government. Some were for even his continuing as chief minister and others their candidate as the new leader. More than a day after BJP parliamentary board unanimously gave the marching orders to its first chief minister in south India, Yeddyurappa showed he was in no mood to walk out without getting what he wants. A firm believer in astrology and rituals, the 68-year-old found the Hindu calendar coming to his aid to hold on to the position to bargain from strength. The period form July 2 to July 30 is the month of 'Ashada' in Hindu calendar. Believers do not undertake any important decisions in these four weeks. Even major purchases are put off. Hence, businessmen organise 'Ashada Sales' announcing 'hefty discounts' hoping their cash boxes will not remain empty for 28 days. Late Thursday, over 12 hours after the BJP parliamentary board directive, Yeddyurappa issued a statement: I am a disciplined soldier of the party... will resign in the forenoon of July 31... work for the party. Just 12 hours later, his supporters - some ministers, several legislators and 14 of the 19 MPs -- told their party high command that they were against removing Yeddyurappa. The mining barons and financially powerful Reddy brothers - G. Karunakara, G. Janardhana and G. Somashekara - held a separate meeting with their backers. The aim was to push for their candidate as chief minister. Their support is said to be for Rural Development Minister Jagadish Shettar, whom they had projected during their earlier rebellion against Yeddyurappa. Their pressure was also intended to ensure that if their candidate does not become the chief minister, at least as many of their supporters should be in the ministry. The inclusion of Janardhana, now tourism minister, and Karunakara -- revenue minister, and their associate Health Minister B. Sriramulu in the new ministry is extremely doubtful because they are named in Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde's report on illegal mining. Another meeting was held of the 11 BJP legislators who had rebelled against Yeddyurappa. The rebels, who were disqualified but won back the membership from the Supreme Court, were not giving any indication on whom they were backing. One common face in all the meetings was of state unit chief K.S. Eshwarappa, whose name is also making rounds in BJP circles. Besides Eshwarappa and Shettar, the other candidates being considered are D.V. Sadananda Gowda and H.N. Ananth Kumar -- Lok Sabha members from Udupi-Chikmagalur and Bangalore South respectively. Eshwarappa met Gowda, Shettar and Home Minister R. Ashoka, who also fancies his chances. In between, Dharmendra Pradhan, general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in the state, has been continuing with his efforts for consensus since Thursday evening. He met a number of ministers, legislators and MPs - some individually and some in groups. Late Thursday, former BJP president and Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka M. Venkaiah Naidu joined Pradhan in his efforts. Their hope of sorting out the successor issue ahead of the arrival of senior leaders Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley Friday did not yield the desired results. By the time Singh and Jaitley landed in Bangalore Friday afternoon, the differences had become more pronounced, forcing the party to put off the legislature party meeting scheduled for the evening. With no consensus in sight, all efforts were now on persuading Yeddyurappa to first resign, participate in the election or selection of the new leader and then settle issues concerning his future in the BJP and party's continued support to him in his many legal battles ahead. A notable development amidst these meetings was Ananth Kumar's reluctance to be seen by journalists who had stationed themsevles at various points - the chief minister's residence, nearby Ashok Hotel, BJP office in south Bangalore, and for some time even at the Bangalore International Airport, 35 kms from the city centre. History

[Goanet] Big Ben in Goa, brings two Salgaocar club hopefuls
Big Ben in Goa, brings two Salgaocar club hopefuls Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, July 29, 2011 Two-time Olympic medallist Ben Johnson is in India in a new avatar. Accompanying two young Canadian brothers of Indian origin to Goa to attend trials at I-League football champions Salgaocar on Saturday, the athlete says he was always passionate about soccer. The two youngsters, Guveer, 18, and Karamveer Tumbar, 17, have been training with Canada-based Johnson for the past four years to develop their stamina at Ontario’s Turner Fenton Secondary School. The Tumbar siblings are strikers and Johnson, the controversial athlete who was stripped of his 100 metre gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics for failing a dope test, says they can surprise Indian defenders with their bursting pace. “The football coach at Turners wanted me to develop the boys’ stamina and I have been working with them since 2007. Both Gurveer and Karamveer are good sprinters and with their lightning speed they can put any defence in trouble,” the sprinter who won two bronze medals (100m, 4x100) from the Los Angeles Olympics, told IANS from Panaji. Asked why his wards chose India, Johnson, said: “Their parents hail from Punjab and the boys want to represent India. It would be great if they can impress the coach at the trials. Eventually, their dream is to represent India.” Johnson, a Jamaican by birth, emigrated to Canada in 1976 at the age of 15 to train under famous Canadian athletics coach Charlie Francis at York University. Recalling his sprinting days, Johnson said: “I started as a footballer and was a striker at Toronto Links in 1990s when the teams mostly had Italians. Though I strengthened my basics in athletics I never lost my passion for soccer. “My success as a sprinter is because of the fact that I was a very good athlete. I feel whatever sport one plays it is important to be a strong athlete.” Johnson’s passion for soccer also saw him working as a trainer for Argentine legend Diego Maradona in 1997. “It was great working with Diego. He is a great athlete and that is the main reason why he could score so many goals beating defenders, who were twice his size,” he said The Tumbars also concurred with their coach as they feel their sprinting skills have helped them to become better. On training with Johnson, Guveer said: “Our football coach at Turner Fenton wanted us to develop stamina and Ben readily agreed. He has been of great help.” http://www.hindustantimes.com/Big-Ben-in-Goa-brings-two-Salgaocar-club-hopefuls/Article1-727112.aspx

Re: [Goanet] Mining discussed at the Goa Global Convention
There should not be any doubt that Goa's media is on the side of the mine owners, mega-project builders, politicians - they are linked through business dealings, awards and grants for art and entertainment events, sponsorships, advertising. No attempt is even made to cover the trail connecting these business interests. And of course, it never hurts to put your mouthpiece as the editor of a major English newspaper. For anyone keeping score in Goa: Miners/mega-project builders/politicians100 Common man/woman 0 Net result for Goa -100 George --- On Fri, 7/29/11, Frederick FN Noronha wrote: This was the case when the majority of the newspapers in Goa were owned by mining houses. Re: [Goanet] Global Goan Convention
We have another report on the Goan Convention written by the Convention Chairman, Cllr Rabi Martins, for Asian Voice (check Goan Voice). It beats me why a reputed ethnic paper like Asian Voice couldn't depute its own reporter to cover the event, especially when its publisher, CB Patel, was one of the speakers. That we have to depend on reports by someone who held a responsible position in the organisation of the convention is our bad luck. First, calling Eduardo Faleiro, Mr. Eduardo , is outright wrong, when in the same para he calls the GOA President, Mr. Flavio Gracias, and the vice-president of GOA just plain Ravi Naik. Then again in the same para the writer corrects himself and says Mr. Faleiro. This may be nitpicking on my part, but it is to show that the paper did not even care to edit Martins' copy. Here is the convention celebrating 50 years of Goa's liberation, and Martins writes Goa's annexation to India. It would be right on Martins' part to say Mea Culpa. Martins then quotes himself praising the president, Flavio. No wonder Gabe wrote that there was lot of back-patting at the convention. Dr. Stella Mascarenhas-Keyes bemoaned the fact that our mother tongue Konkani was not retained down the generations and welcome the movement to revive it. Let me tell you'll a fact. When I went to receive Stella at the Toronto in 1988 for the Toronto convention. I bumped into my cousin who worked at the airport. He greeted me in Konkani and Stella remarked if we keep speaking in Konkani. Before introducing her to my cousin I asked her if she could speak Konkani. She smiled shyly and said she does a little. I went to receive her because I had managed to her a ticketing agency to sponsor her ticket. Hope her children are speaking the language! Just kidding, Stella. Martins said a line about Eddie's presentation on how a significant Goan E-Village was beginning to emerge. Dear Eddie, it looks like an interesting idea and I wish you the best on your efforts.. So, I once again request you to put its details on your Goan Voice. Martins, like the earlier two reports, has ignored the presentations from Jason and Cliff. Though I would have also liked to read the reports from the representatives of the Goan associations. One bit of interesting news I gathered from Martins' report is that the NRI Affairs Department is trying to get birth certificates peior to 1955. It would be also interesting to read the future issues of Asian Voice which will carry articles on UK Goans, as Patel assured the audience. I am just articulating my views in the hope that reporting improves at the next convention. BTW, was the next venue announced? No hard feelings, dear Martins. I know you are not a professional journalist and, hence, can be excused. But I still intrigued why Jason and Cliff were left out. Eugene Correia

[Goanet] A LIGHT FOR OUR PATH: EXCERPTS FROM THE CLOSING SPEECH OF THE FIRST CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY OF INDIA BY DR. B. R AMBEDKAR, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution.(PART I)
A LIGHT FOR OUR PATH: EXCERPTS FROM THE CLOSING SPEECH OF THE FIRST CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY OF INDIA BY DR. B. R AMBEDKAR, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution. “… my mind is so full for the future of our country that I feel I ought to take this occasion to give expression to some of my reflections thereon. On 26th January 1950, India will be an independent country. What would happen to her independence? Will she maintain her independence or will she lose it again? This is the first thought that comes to my mind. It is never that India was never an independent country. The point is that she once lost the independence she had. Will she lose it a second time? It is this thought that makes me most anxious for the future. What perturbs me greatly is the fact that not only India has once lost her independence, but she lost it by the infidelity and treachery of some of her own people. In the invasion of Sind by Mahommed – Bin – Kassim, the military commanders of King Dahar accepted bribes from the agents of Mahommed – Bin – Kassim and refused to fight on the side of their King. It was Jaichand who invited Mahommed Ghori to invade India and fight against Pritvi Raj and promised him the help of himself and the Solanki kings. When Shivaji was fighting for the liberation of Hindus , the other Maratha noblemen and the Rajput kings were fighting the battle on the side Moghul emperors. When the British were trying to destroy the Sikh rulers, Gulab Singh, their principal commander sat silent and did not help to save the Sikh kingdom. In 1857, when a large part of India had declared a war of independence against the British, the Sikhs stood and watched the event as silent spectators. Will history repeat itself ?It is this thought that fills me with anxiety. This anxiety is deepened by the realization of the fact that in addition to our old enemies in the form of castes and creeds we are going to have many political parties with diverse and opposing political creeds. Will Indians place the country above their creed or will they place creed above country? I do not know. But this much is certain that if the parties place creed above country, our independence will be put in jeopardy a second time and probably be lost forever. This eventuality we must all resolutely guard against. We must be determined to defend our independence with the last drop of our blood” Regards, Gerry.
