[Goanet-News] IN GOA: PublishingNext, the Indian publishing conference, will 'get people thinking about what the future holds for publishing' (yourstory.in)
PublishingNext, the Indian publishing conference, will 'get people thinking about what the future holds for publishing' Exclusive chat with Leonard Fernandes, founder of CinnamonTeal Publishing, organizer the conference in Goa on September 16 and 17 Leonard Fernandes cofounded CinnamonTeal Publishing with his wife Queenie. CinnamonTeal won the British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur Award for publishing in 2010. Read his interview here. On September 16 and 17, CinnamonTeal is hosting PublishingNext, a conference that will debate what future holds for publishing given rapid changes taking place in technology and the way books are published, read or delivered. New business models might emerge that are entirely different from the traditional publishing models in use today. Read agenda here. The discussions include digital books, social media’s impact on publishing, copyright issues, translation in publishing, publishing houses of the future, in addition to some workshops including the one on academic writing. Leonard Fernandes, founder of CinnamonTeal Publishing, explains to YourStory’s chief evangelist what PublishingNext is all about. For registrations, see home page of PublishingNext website. YourStory: Thank you Leonard for talking to YourStory on PublishingNext. For our readers to get an idea of what you do, can you please give a brief introduction about CinnamonTeal Publishing. Leonard: We started CinnamonTeal in 2007 after heeding requests to publish the books of some of our regulars on dogearsetc.com, our online bookstore. Since India had already so many publishers, we wanted to develop a new model of publishing and so adopted that of being a provider of self-publishing services. Today, 4 years later, we have catered to authors in about 18 countries and have published books in 9 languages. We have also increased our repertoire of services to include translations, indexing, ebook development and distribution and audio books. YourStory: PublishingNext is perhaps the first Indian conference on what publishing is and is going to be, especially with Internet and digital media set to change the rules of the game. Can you explain the objectives of the conference? Leonard: Our objective was to get people thinking about what the future holds for publishing rather than get lost in the day to day routine of publishing and mind little about the dangers and potential the next wave of technology and business models bring about. We also wanted to provide a platform where new ideas and technologies could be talked about and debated. YourStory: Let’s now talk about specific segments: digital books. Can you give us an idea about their uptake in India at present? Leonard: My personal opinion is that many publishers are experimenting with new ideas that involve digital content, among them Penguin, Panther Books and Tulika Publishers, Chennai, to name a few. However, I feel that these publishers are preparing themselves for any future demand rather than experiencing any significant returns on investment presently. YourStory: Social media — your take on its impact on publishing. Leonard: This varies widely between publishers. Some like Tulika (Chennai), Tara Books and Pratham Books are doing a really good job with it, others have a difficult time understanding what it is capable of doing for them. So there still remains a lot of ground to be covered. YourStory: India is a diverse market as far as vernacular publishing or regional publishing is concerned. How is this market going to explode in the future in the digital era. Leonard: I think the constraints that keep publishers of Indian language books from embracing digital content is technical – an absence of fonts that can be rendered on devices and devices themselves that do not or cannot display Indic fonts. There might also be financial constraints in that readers might not be able to afford eReaders but that is pure conjecture and I have no evidence to support that. YourStory: Copyright issues and proliferation of books on the pavement. Or is it more to it? Leonard: It is more than just books on the pavement. I am not sure publishers are too bothered about it because it only goes to show that the book is popular enough to be pirated. Like imitation is the best form of flattery. But there is more to this topic like parallel import, the concept of territorial sales, the use of open access knowledge itself. Still very fuzzy to many and needs clarity. YourStory: Your thoughts on the recent trends in publishing. Leonard: There is so much going on. And each move seems like a small step in countering each issue. Like Penguin which has moved into retail to counter the problem of inefficient supply chain mechanisms. Worldwide too there is a lot happening that will ultimately affect India. Like the issue of agency pricing. YourStory: Who are your partners for the conference? Leonard: British Council has helped us a lot in its capacity as Knowledge

Bartender: Most certainly do. Libru: What about golden urinals? There is a long pause, then Libru hears the Bartender yelling: Bartender: Hey Duming, yesterday evening after playing music for the funeral when you entered here, you said you kept your saxophone right that corner? [Goanet] Anna says he will back non-BJP, non-Cong front
Anna says he will back non-BJP, non-Cong front Rajdeep Sardesai, CNN-IBN New Delhi: Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare has said that he is willing to back and campaign for any political outfit that is corruption-free and belongs to the non-Congress and non-BJP front. Talking to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Anna said that he plans to restart his movement if Parliament's Standing Committee does not agree to his demands on the Jan Lokpal Bill. Responding to a question whether he will support a political party that has clean people from all parties, Anna said, Yes, I will support them, but I will not be a part of the leadership of that party. This is the only way we can save this country. Defending his campaign, Anna said that the movement is not anti-Parliament, but against those blocking the Bill. Anna also praised former prime minister Indira Gandhi, saying the country needs leaders like her who can work for the poor. Taking a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Anna said, The Prime Minister lacks authority and nobody listens to him in his team. Anna also made it clear that he will go from constituency to constituency asking people not to vote for the MPs who are against the Jan Lokpal Bill. The MPs who are against it, we will sing bhajans outside their houses. I will go to their constituencies and tell people not to vote for them, Anna said. Anna also admitted that asking for a death penalty for the corrupt was wrong. He said that those who are corrupt should be given life imprisonment. Responding to allegations by the likes of Arundhati Roy, Anna claimed that there is no black money funding in his campaign. When asked what will he do if he discovers that there is black money funding his movement, Anna said that he will back out of his movement. If such a situation comes to light, I will back out of the movement. I will run this movement till it is blameless. Those who make such allegations are not always clean themselves, Anna said. Here is an excerpt of the interview: Rajdeep Sardesai: If the Standing Committee does not agree to what you say, will you again start the protest? Anna Hazare: Yes, we will protest but not against Parliament. We will see those who oppose it in the Standing Committee and we will start singing bhajans in front of the houses of those Parliament members who are opposing such a nice bill which can improve the country and when elections come, I will go to the constituency of such members and tell the people not to vote for such members. Rajdeep Sardesai: Isn’t that politics, asking people not to vote for a particular MP? Is Anna Hazare not gradually getting into politics? Anna Hazare: No, not at all. There is no question of politics in this. We have to develop and improve the conditions in the country. Our country has got a bad name due to corruption, it is getting difficult for the aam aadmi to survive due to corruption, that is why we are making this effort, so no question of politics in this. Rajdeep Sardesai: You are saying this movement is not taking a political turn, so next year when UP, Uttarakhand and Punjab elections will come will you go to such states and say that do not vote such people who are corrupt. Will you connect this movement against corruption to the elections? Anna Hazare: Yes, Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha are sacred bodies and only sacred people should go in it. If corrupt people go then it is a threat to the democracy. That is why people have to be woken up and have to be told that they should not vote for the corrupt. Rajdeep Sardesai: So if there is some corrupt contender in UP who has a criminal record against him, will you go and campaign there? Anna Hazare: Of course. Rajdeep Sardesai: So this is not politics? Anna Hazare: What politics? If people elect such corrupt politicians in the Assembly who are a threat to the country then it is our duty to wake up people. Rajdeep Sardesai: Nitin Gadkari says if Anna leads us we are ready to join him. Now LK Advani is going on a Yatra, don’t you think your movement is being politicised. Political parties want to take advantage of you? Anna Hazare: That will happen. This happened many times in my life. When I protested during the Congress government, the BJP and Shiv Sena leaders came to me, the government went and the BJP-Shiv Sena came to power. The Congress did graduation and the latter got a doctorate. Rajdeep Sardesai: Will you join any political Yatra like Advani's Yatra? Anna Hazare: Absolutely not. If the BJP says they say they support Anna then they should bring the Lokayukta Bill in their states. First bring the Lokayukta. Rajdeep Sardesai: So you don’t plan to tie up with the BJP? Some say you are seen closer to the BJP because you speak against the Congress and this movement seems to be anti-Congress. Anna Hazare: Not at all. If the Congress feels so, they should not take the path of lie. Since the beginning of the movement they spoke lies, starting from the joint

[Goanet] Illegal mining: HC notice to govt on revenue loss
Illegal mining: HC notice to govt on revenue loss PANAJI: The high court of Bombay at Goa on Wednesday issued notices to the director of mines (DoM), Goa State Pollution Control Board ( GSPCB) and Union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) in a public interest litigation (PIL) pointing out revenue loss to the state exchequer pegged at over 10,000 crore due to illegal mining. The court has sought replies from the government authorities and posted the matter for hearing on September 27. The state, which has to answer to the commission on illegal mining constituted by the Central government, now has to also respond to allegations made in the PIL. A division bench comprising justice A P Lavande and justice R P Sondurbaldota issued the notices after hearing the PIL filed by Mapusa NGO Goa Foundation challenging illegal extraction of ore in excess of statutory permitted limits. The petition points out that as per publications of the Goa Mineral Ore Exporters Association about 20.4 million tonnes of ore have been illegally extracted from 2002 to 2010 and exported, leading to a loss of revenue valued at 10,800 crore at $120 (approximately 6,000) per tonne. Appearing for Goa Foundation advocate Norma Alvares sought directions to the authorities to install a comprehensive information and communication technology (ICT) based system for monitoring and control of production, transport and sale of mineral ore produced in the state within a time frame. The government must oversee mining activity in the state and ensure adequate controls over quantities of ore produced and transported, Alvares suggested. All mine owners must also be directed to erect name boards at mine entrances which will disclose relevant details and permissions to operate, she submitted. Goa Foundation also sought reliefs to prevent illegal mining in the forthcoming mining season which commences in November. From P1 The petition also seeks directions to the authorities for implementing measures to enforce the production limits laid down for each mine under the Environment Protection Act, 1986, Water Act, 1974 and Air Act, 1981 and for regulating the transport of ore. The NGO claimed it has carried out research on quantity of ore being extracted from Goa's approximately 91 working mining leases, by collating data from replies given to the state assembly by the mines minister during the past four years. Goa Foundation stated it has tried to match this record against the production limits imposed on these mining leases by the environment clearances and consent orders. It found that a large number of mines have greatly exceeded their production limits during the period 2006-10. Goa Foundation said that the quantities of ore illegally exported from the state are also staggering indicating that in addition to the excess produced, large-scale illegal mining is also taking place, having serious environmental implications. Earlier the court, on August 26, 2011, in another petition filed by the NGO had issued notices to 48 mining companies that had been allegedly carrying on illegal mining having serious environmental implications. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Illegal-mining-HC-notice-to-govt-on-revenue-loss/articleshow/9987679.cms ~Avelino
[Goanet] lizards in mid day meals
Lizards in mid day meals The frequency of lizards cooked in children`s mid day meals is alarming It is causing revulsion and repulsion to the families and others The only option is to ask the PTA`s to cook their meals. The Parent`s organisations will have interest and no profit motive Their site gives a creepy feelings to the children, nevertheless they are not pleasant to behold They are of course harmless Children are amazed and curious at their walking on the ceilings without falling down They do fall sometimes causing some disturbed feelings The lizards are attracted to the food source. Mostly they prey on small insects, like mosquitoes , cockroaches, moths, butterflies . etc.Hence they do us a service in keeping at bay some nuisance and proliferation of pests Lizards are beneficial ,our friends and not enemies The house lizard is poisonous, if cooked with the food They find the inner temperature more suitable , as they cannot adjust the body temperature Lizards prefer warmth and the temperature difference .They enter the houses for left over food stuff. Lizards enjoy sipping water if kept open Lizards are easily attracted by the insects , which are drawn by the light source and hence they are more active at nights Their life span is about 1 to 4 years The same variety of lizards is also founds out doors in gardens Lizards in the house are not present every where in large congregation. How to get rid of them. Drive/ frighten them away with a stick . Use of Peacock feathers are helpful Sticky pads are a trap too. The smell of cleaned egg shells is also a type of repellent. Freshly cut onions, garlic pods also deter them The crazy lines/ Lakhsiman Reka chalk also helps Pest control , electric vibrators, sucking them with vacuum cleaners. Crevices and holes should be filled, entry points like openings , windows closed, The use of a domestic cat drives them away. Cool temperature is not conducive to them. The tiles of the Kitchen should be glazed and which prevents their grip. Some special liquids reduce surface tension for their grip. The light source in the kitchen should never be directly over the stove and cooked food should immediately be always closed. Such incidents in our own cooking are very rare , and even then the quantity being small, there is a check on any foreign material Killing is no solution by pest control The children are curious about their moving on the ceiling. They have special pads and feet have suction cups for the firm grip Control the entry of insects and block the entry points of lizards. The light source should be properly placed and not too bright Lizards in the meals of children is unacceptable, as the poor are the most beneficiaries of the scheme nelson lopes chinchinim 9850926276
[Goanet] Goan Welfare Association (GWA), celebrates World Goa Day on 21st October 2011 in Qatar.
Goan Welfare Association (GWA), celebrates World Goa Day on 21st October 2011. Goans in Qatar celebrates World Goa Day since 2003. Celebrate Goa and Goans, being the watchword of World Goa Day was exhibited in vibrant and multihued celebration by the Goan Welfare Association in Qatar every year. World Goa Day was presented in a riot of colours and lively music depicting the Goan identity, culture, language, cuisine and traditions by Goans of different ages. Goans based in different countries celebrate World Goa Day in Solidarity on 20th August to commemorate inclusion of Konkani in the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution. But some will schedule their observance of the international event on a date best suited to their communities. On GOA DAY, Goans will remind themselves of the need to work to preserve their culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for their children, the non-Goan community and for posterity. It is a wonderful movement that have started and the Goans who are working at various levels and in various fields connected with the nurturing of the Goan identity and development of the Konkani language are overjoyed about the success of this movement. On GOA DAY, Goans remember 1992, when the two Houses of the Indian Parliament unanimously voted and approved an amendment to include our mother tongue Konkani in the eighth schedule of the Constitution of India, thus according it national status. It is also a day where Goans world-wide join in SOLIDARITY to celebrate being a GOAN, said Simon D'Silva, president of the association. Last year Eric Ozario, co-founder of Mandd Sohbann and Kalaangann who was the chief guest said, Konkans are a community of 50 lakhs konkani speakers. Out of the 4000 odd Indian languages, Konkani is the 18th language included in the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution at that time and now there are 21 official languages. Konkani has been introduced as a third language in Karnataka Schools. Is there any place for Konkanni in our Hearts or in our Homes? Have we given Konkanni to our children - which was given to us by our forefathers? Have we carried on with the legacy? Is it good to continue with the legacy? questioned Eric Ozario. He said Keralites call themselves Malayalis, People from Tamil Nadu call themselves Tamils, let us all people from the Konkan regions of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka call ourselves as Konkans. Ozario complimented Goan Welfare Association for the marvelous work, depicting the language and true goan culture in a distant miles away. Last year's event has highlighted the importance of sustaining the legacy of the Konkani language and the Goan heritage for the future generations. Goan Welfare Association urge community members to teach their children Konkani language. Teaching and imparting training in Konkani language may not help our children to get jobs, but it will not make us poor, but will enrich our future generations with a treasure trove of our language. Goan Welfare Association, Qatar will be celebrating World Goa Day on 21st October 2011 at AL GHAZAL CLUB at 3.30 pm with greater performances than the past years. Having achieved unprecedented success in previous years, GWA invites it's members, the Goan and Konkani community to an evening filled with fun, music, cultural programme and many more exciting performances. A 22 member cultural group will be specially flown in to Qatar along with other artists to perform. Several other local artists will also perform on the World Goa Day. ENTRY IS FREE. 37th tiatr Competition: GHOR GHOVACHEM MONDIR DEVACHEM Ploy: Younger brother Steyn brings home his girlfriend Sequela to seek job as domestic help. She gets the job in the Lacereda’s family, thanks to Steyn’s elder brother Kevin’s generosity. Sequela now having secret affair with Kevin, who is happily married to Venus. Venus caught them once in the garden and warns Sequela to stay away from her husband. Love is blind, things gone too far with this illicit affair. Venus catches them once again. This time red handed in their own bedroom. Sequela now sent home never to return back. Sequela won’t give up that easily, she now files a police complaint accusing Kevin of raping her. For Sequela, things now have turned from bad to worse after realising she made a mistake and lost her boyfriend Steyn, she now commits suicide but saved by timely medical help. As Venus, will you ever forgive Sequela?? Sequela is now back with Steyn and the Lacerda family. ‘forgive and forget’ is the message we got from the Tiatr GHOR GHOVACHEM MONDIR DEVACHEM By Kissan Naik (Utsav Samiti, Chinchinim, Goa). This was the 4 entry in the ongoing 37th Tiatr Competition organised by Kala Academy of Goa and supported by Tiatr Academy (TAG). Staged on 14th Sept. 2011 The tiatr is well rehearsed or homework well done. There were no FLs, FDs, OB/OVs. Everything gone smooth, lot of hard work. Father, sons, daughter in law, girlfriend and her brother, role well played by Arthur Viegas, Joel Rodrigues, Anyv Fernandes, Evon Fernandes, Sonia Diniz, Jose Fernandes respectively. Comedy was also from never seen before artistes, done pretty well particularly Mr. Agnelo Rebello (as Rock Xavier) who sounded or reminded me of Hindi/Marathi film comedian late Laxmikant Berde. The PC or havaldar too did well with his Marathi talk (Sardon Baretto) and the doctor (Ashok Raut ?) and his sister Perpet (Irene Fernandes). I like the birthday song singing comedy where the Hawaldar also sings in Marathi (included in the clip) There were about 11 songs all well received by the audience. Besides, some of above singers, there were others like Tony Lacerda, Steffny Pereira, Braganza Pereira etc One song sang by Tony on Tiatrists received the most applause (shown in the separate clip). Incidentally, Prince Jacob was there throughout the show. Despite cutting short of one song, the tiatr appears to have overshot by atleast 10 minutes. Also, there was no Chouko or Quartet song (whether is a must or not, I am not too sure about it). [Goanet] Climate Change Natural Resources: A Book of Activities
*Climate Change Natural Resources: A Book of Activities for Environmental Education* This new book consists of 'Activities' that students can do on various environmental topics. Dear Reader, Environment ceased to be a sideshow recently, after the country's apex curriculum setter and the two dominant education boards decided to allocate scores to the subject in the crucial school-leaving examinations. As per the current guidelines, the assessment will not be based on the conventional 'study-text-books-write-examination' mode. Grades will depend on how active the examinee has been 'on the ground'. CSE's Environment Education Unit has always been working towards providing easy-to-understand reading material. Our new publication on this subject is an attempt to lend teachers a helping hand. It unfolds in two sections: Climate Change: how to make sense of it all, Natural Resources: how to share and care. Here, the key issues selected adhere strictly to curriculum guidelines. However, they are introduced to students not as a paragraph to memorise, but as an activity to do. Each activity sheet begins with a Curriculum Connect, a brief note to teachers that matches suggested assignments to the curriculum stream (sciences, social sciences etc.) and to the class level (primary, mid or senior). Likewise, Gobar Gyan, a succinct backgrounder, that precedes each activity set, explains to students why they are being asked to do the task. We have made a determined effort to make each of these four-page activity sheets self contained. Each activity sheet includes references to external information materials, online linkages and relevant data. *Introductory price of the book is Rs 290/- (USD39)* Order multiple copies of this activity book as you will need to make copies of the various activities to be given out to students as assignments. _*For Indian Buyers:*_ Send your payment by DD/Cheque payable AT PAR for the required amount, drawn in favour of Centre for Science and Environment, payable in New Delhi. [Goanet] Fast Vs Farce
FAST VS FAST IS FARCE ? The high profile fast by C,M. Narendra Modi for peace and harmony is hollow He has not apologized for Gujerat riots He may be euphoric about the S.C decision for sending the case back to the Magistrate He is building public pressure in case the orders go against him The fast at the cost of 5 Lakhs in air condition auditorium. is made the bone of contention Is the C.M taking a leaf from the fast of Anna? Do the people resonate with Modi and the cause ?Why Modi is not allowing Lok Ayukta appointed by the High Court Judge to function ? The objection is academic only there is no blemish on the appointed Lok Ayukta, at least publicly aired To compare Modi with peace and harmony with development indices is not justified at all These are two different issues poles apart He has been nick named as the apostle of violence. He may have not been directly involved , but there appears to be tacit approval. The two high ranking officials in the state of Gujarat are being demoralised by political witch hunt The fast is really farcial in its approach and implementation. The sudden glamour for fast is ridiculous The Shankar Sigh Vaghela, one time confidant and close companion is undertaking a counter fast This fast is pitched against high profile fast in air condition atmosphere It will take 2 hrs before and end much later and that is the main highlight The issues are clouded under rhetoric This is the first time counter fast to dampen the the limelight The BJP is all enthused by Modi`s fast, hoping it will catapult him to the centre stage of National Politics, projecting him as the future P.M. The congress is not much enamoured by the counter fast by playing it down. Every body in free India has right to go on fast, but this time around there are no restrictions of numbers, place et all . Fast is a valuable weapon, but the gross misuse will loosen its effectiveness as the protest. Both the fast are political farces and the people are not amused by them They are drawing attention to themselves for personal glory and some residual effect for the party. these are nothing more than gimmicks and people are wise not to be fooled by it. nelson lopes Chinchinim 9850926276

The good news is your description of my article as empty rhetoric has produced the desired result. It appears that Carmen Miranda has read my article as she has experienced a paradigm shift and is now wisely using her precious time to provide us all with her corrections to the articles she herself has written. There are elements in our community that are full of insolence making it difficult to take anything at face value and being an honourable goanet reader, makes me wonder if any part of the article or other articles she has written are credible in this world of misinformation? Game on Message-ID: CACB95ndrtbJr6KycQ1DjNdjcjvEb=ymf_zkha_zvuxwxhyh...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 Campal football stadium ? Game on GERARD DE SOUZA Herald Panjim Plus Edition(Sep 15) The movement to rebuild the Campal Football stadium is very much on the cards. After government approval, a budget has to be allotted and work order issued to GSIDC. Till then, Ponnjekars will have to wait. The campaigners however, plan to keep their campaign going by organising more tournaments and activities this time, and not just football. After a 10 year hiatus, out of nowhere the issue of the stadium, came into the limelight. There could be many reasons. On the surface ( pun intended), it seems like a lull in activity, but the movement for the building of the Campal Football stadium is still very much on. After simmering for a long time, and ever since it was demolished in 2004 with a promise to build new pavilions, the movement to rebuild a football stadium snowballed into a major issue in June this year, with the crescendo reaching a peak, and although a tie- breaker football tourney was being organised on the now over grown grass of the stadium, it nevertheless, attracted a huge crowd. Even the initial opposition to the stadium has since died down. Blame it on the rains or on the assurances given by the chief minister and the promise of the opposition leader to pursue the matter until it is complete, but the resultant lack of activity ensured that issue went out of media spotlight. ? The movement is definitely on. The Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar has promised to take personal responsibility to ensure that till the time a new stadium is rebuilt, the ground will be leveled and goal posts erected, so that local residents can start playing. As per his assurances, a few benches and minor beautifcation will also be carried out. Works on that front are likely to commence soon and completed by mid- October,? Sandeep Heble of the Jaycees told Herald. After simmering for many nearly 10 years, out of nowhere the issue of the stadium, came into the limelight. There could be many reasons attributed to it. One is the fact that a few of Goa?s premier clubs began seriously looking for a permanent ? home ground? in and around Panjim. The other possible reason could be that during a discussion at the International Centre, the space left vacant by the stadium was considered as one of the areas in the city that could be
[Goanet] Another petrol hike
PETROL HIKE The petrol hike is going through the roof. The decontrol of fuel prices is an excuse for the uncomfortable Govt to reduce subsidies and loses incurred by oil companies The price rise will have cascading effect on spiraling prices The amount of free fuel to all govt. functionaries and Ministers, governors, speakers MLA`s M.P.`s is a substantial burden There is no talk of controlling , reducing the free facility. The licence to manufacture cars, scooters is aggressively pursued. These policies encourage use of petrol, cause congestion, pollution, accidents, parking problems etc In stead the Govt should promote mass rapid transport by buses, so that people will depend less on private transport There is hardly any loud thinking to seriously address the need. The Govt does not curb all its wasteful expenditure to make a dent The fleet of petrol guzzling vehicles of the Govt are a status symbol. Besides the Govt, earns substantial revenues from the sale of fuel. There is no determined effort to encourage fuel efficient cars. Alternative fuel resources are not tapped to run the cars There is no alternative than to suffer in silence, as what cannot be cured must be endured' Persons used to wallow in luxury will not mind the rise after sometime, and the initial resistance will soon give way The rise is attributed to external costs, But when the price of the imported crude is decreased , there is no decrease in local prices. Then there is need to cover the past loses Is not true that what goes up never comes down, literally the prices? The cost of petrol at Rs 75 a litre is very high considering the standard of living and per capita income of Indians This is an unbearable burden that will cast its shadow on all fronts The Govt by freeing prices has absolved itself of all the blame The possibility of increase in LPG cylinder, kerosene cannot also be ruled outThere are many other subsidies, like food ,fertiliser , which hardly reach the target group They are gobbled up by the rich farmers ,income being exempt from tax. Many nonviable popular schemes to woo the voters and add to the cost of subsidies There is no doubt the biggest foreign exchange component is on oil import bill. What happens to all the oil productions locally . does it have to cost the imported oil prices ? It is said that revenues from fuels are largest and quick, sure collections It is better to go the bullock cart, cycles, trams, horse carriages to offer resistance Is not resistance supposed to curb demands? There are no protests now as it is already taken for granted as inevitable and the target of attack are oil companies so dispersed from focus nelson lopes Chinchinim 9850926276
[Goanet] This can happen only in Goa --Villagers take body to CMs House!!
This from the Navhind Times online editon. http://www.navhindtimes.in/goa-news/morjim-landowner-refuses-cremation-villagers-take-body-cm-s-house The Morjim villagers squatting at the Green Park junction blocking traffic. (Erwin Fonseca)MAPUSA: Tension prevailed at Bagwada, Morjim on Tuesday evening when a land owner refused cremation of a woman. Pernem deputy collector, Mr Rajendra Mirajkar who on being tipped off rushed at Morjim along with the Pernem police but was unable to pacify the crowd. The crowd thereafter went with the body to Panaji where five of them later met the Chief Minister, Mr Kamat and placed before him their grievances. According to information available, the body of a 60-year-old woman, Shashikala Bagkar was taken for cremation at a traditional cremation site at Bagwada, Morjim as the village has no common cremation site and the bodies are cremated in different private properties. Most are however cremated on the banks of the river Chapora. To add to the woes of the Hindu community, this land which was being used as a cremation site has been bought for a hotel project since the last 5 years and now there are restrictions to go to the site. A petition was filed in the court and the court upheld the ownership of the land owner in its order about 3 years ago and passed strictures against trespassers. On Tuesday afternoon, when the body of Shashikala was taken for cremation the landowner blocked the procession and denied cremation in his land. The body was brought for cremation at 1 p.m. As permission was denied there were heated arguments between the two sides. Pernem PI, Mr Uttam Raut Dessai and the mamlatdar, Mr Bhushan Sawaikar rushed to the spot but could not do anything. Mr Dessai deployed a strong police force to avoid any untoward incident. The body was kept outside the gate till 5 p.m. When at 5 p.m., deputy collector of Pernem, Mr Mirajkar arrived on the scene he had to face the wrath of the agitators. He was abused by the aggrieved people. Thereafter the people decided to go with the body to the Chief Minister’s residence and ask him to intervene. Pernem PI, Mr Dessai requested the land owner and an industrialist, Mr Babi Bagkar to allow the cremation of the body as taking it to Panaji was not advisable, however the people did not listen to the pleas and went ahead. Interestingly, all throughout the evening the people expressed great resentment over the fact that no panchayat member neither the local MLA, Mr Laxmikant Parsekar had come to enquire into the problem. The various officials who had arrived also failed to solve the matter. A lawyer from Mandrem, Mr Prasad Shahapurkar also arrived on the scene and tried his best to solve the confrontation at Bagwada, but in vain. The land owner then deployed private security at the site, and the problem did not end there. Pernem PI, Mr Dessai informed DySP, Mr Sammy Tavares about the crowd proceeding towards Panaji via Mapusa. Mr Tavares alongwith Mapusa PI, Mr Rajeshkumar and a strong police force stopped the procession at Green Park junction at Guirim. Mr Mirajkar and the Bardez deputy collector, Mr Redkar who also arrived there tried to convince the crowd of around 200 people, but the crowd was adamant. Incidentally, in the normal course women from Hindu community do not attend any cremation, but probably for the first time it was noticed that the women outnumbered the men at Morjim and they were also present at Guirim. As they were stopped from going ahead the women squatted on the Panaji-Mapusa highway at Guirim and blocked the traffic for almost an hour. Mr Tavares along with his force was trying his best to regulate the traffic flow. Determined to go ahead the crowd did not bow down to any requests and went ahead to Panaji.

[Goanet] IN GOA: PublishingNext, the Indian publishing conference, will 'get people thinking about what the future holds for publishing' (yourstory.in)
PublishingNext, the Indian publishing conference, will 'get people thinking about what the future holds for publishing' Exclusive chat with Leonard Fernandes, founder of CinnamonTeal Publishing, organizer the conference in Goa on September 16 and 17 Leonard Fernandes cofounded CinnamonTeal Publishing with his wife Queenie.
