Today Goa is ravaged by Excessive Mining(mostly illegal) which is
devastating Goa and there is no doubt that this destruction, feeds the huge
lustful greed of most of the ruling Ministers and MLA's in Goa. You just
have to see the papers on various ruling MLA's doing their utmost to support
this devastation, so as to realise their respective illegitimate profits.
The small part of the spoils of mining are used to but off voters via
various forms of enticement to keep the Anti Goans in Power. They are
distorting facts to support mining saying that it supports livelihoods. One
thing is clear Goans have to choose between (A) Short term gains from mining
or (B) Permanent long term destruction of Goa, its land, environment and
water resources. What Goans do today will decide their fate tomorrow and
should the Worse Happen; then there should be absolutely no sympathy for
Goans because then, they would have brought about the catastrophe on
themselves by either (1) Supporting Mining or (2) Keeping silent about it!!

StyleSpeak: Best kept Secrets
By Wendell Rodricks

The season is upon us. Since a week, the sun is shining and with that,
the realisation that Goa will be under tourist invasion very soon.
Behind the world of the beach and tourist traps are some activities that
regular tourists do not encounter. It took a Kiwi guest to ask me about
the other Goa. I showed her websites and introduced her to the secret
Goa I know. Here is a list of what to do...that is way out of tourist
circuits.

1. REACH FOR THE STARS. The Association of Friends of Astronomy (AFA)
spearheaded by Percival Noronha can have you star gazing at Panjim,
Ponda and Aquem. Visit www.astrogoa.blogspot.com or www.dstegoa.gov.in
for details.

2. VOLUNTEER WHEN ON HOLIDAY. NRI Goans and foreigners can volunteer to
work while on holiday, making for a satisfying, pleasurable and
meaningful experience. Go to
www.realgap.co.uk/india-goa-community-volunteers.

3. THE PERFORMING ARTS. Apart from moving your body at a night club or
rave, you can learn cultural steps and a literal song and dance
experience by enrolling at the Kala Academy in Panjim. Their roster of
performances and classes come as a surprise for many. Isabel Santa Rita
Vaz' Mustard Seed theatre group for theatre aspirants is also recommended.

4. GO GREEN. Want to learn how to use effective micro organism (EM)
instead of chemical cleaners, organic insect repellents and eco
solutions for garbage and water treatment? Visit Green Goa Works
(+91-832-2255217) at Khorlim near Mapuca. You will see how a small drum
unit can compost as well as grow a vegetable garden in a tiny kitchen or
balcony.

5. TURN TO FARMING. The Pilar Fathers at Bhirondem have a 55 acre green
lung which is fascinating. Call Fr. Inace at +91-9420820726. One can
also contact Rajendra Kerkar at the helm of the Vivekananda Environment
Fauz.

6. ON A MISSION. The Missionary sisters at Mother Theresa welcome
volunteers in Calcutta daily. Nearer home, their set up near Don Bosco
School in Panjim is a heart-warming experience. I know a couple who
adopted a little girl from this home which changed their lives forever.
On the topic of children, the Sethu Trust in Altinho works with children
with special needs. They have a jumble sale on 16th October. You can
donate or buy items (www.sethu.in). On 15th October, the Pyde Pyper
Children Artwork project by Wilson DeSouza will be held at the Kala
Academy, Panjim. Wilson works with Bal Bhavan in Panjim; well worth
checking their activities.

7. CARITAS. A google on the international work done by Caritas can take
you far beyond Goa. But in the state their Caritas Goa home at Tivim for
children with AIDS is a shining light. You can make a donation in kind
or become a volunteer by giving you time. There are many orphanages, old
age homes and a home for the terminally ill (Loutolim) in Goa that will
receive your support in cash or kind.

8. CULTURE VULTURE. Goa Heritage Action Group not only work on heritage
projects, they publish books too. Their book Walking in and around
Panjim is a jewel that is sadly out of stock but deserves a reprint for
the tourist season. In Panjim, Broadway Book Shop has every book on Goa.
The Other India Bookshop in Mapuca is a secret treasure. For further
scholarly browsing, visit Goa University, the Goa Archives Dept, The
Central Library, Panjim, the Xavier Centre for Historical Research,
Porvorim or The Dempo Centre of Portuguese Studies at Patto, Panjim.

9. A WALK IN THE CLOUDS. Away from the crowds and on the hills, you can
encounter Clinton Vaz or a group of trekkers called Eco Treks Goa.
Follow both on Facebook. Cartoonist Alexyz and Miguel Braganza started
Green Heritage in Siolim a decade ago. At the end of the monsoon they
have a fabulous exhibition of plants. I wish each village in Goa follows
their example.

10. GO FISHING. Visit www.goa-fishing.com for everything from spear
fishing and angling to snorkelling and crocodile watching. Talking of
fish, read Rahul Alvares adventures on www.authorama.com. His book Free
From School is the best read on how to take a year off between SSC and
college. From fish tanks and farming to dealing with snakes, this is a
must buy, must read. Sailing enthusiasts can cruise the wind at
www.goasailing.com. You can also go deep sea diving from Bogmalo beach
or contact Mark Butt / Derreck Menezes for wind surfing. Ask around at
Titos for their whereabouts.

Dear All,

We have been following the conversation on this subject and guess what?
It has given us both such a great feeling to know that many, if not all,
are ready to help and encourage Sujata and Elaine with their Bookworm
biz. Affirmations such as these are just what we need, rather than those
messages that produce negative feelings. Just imagine what Goa and the
world would be like with all these bouquets, we would have great perfume
permeating in the environment around us, and beyond.

Words of encouragement, support and affirmation is all that one needs in
times like this, they help to lift you up. We both have been there and
back, so we know!!

Sujata/Elaine, please call us on our mobile 9764329134 and we will
endeavour to give some help, to the best of our ability, at this point
in time.

Dear George and Anita, I agree with both of you fully. This is a crucial
community resource. Sujata Noronha (not a relative) and Elaine have been
doing a superb job. Somewhere along the way, they are battling a decline
in the reading habit.

Can we (or, at least those interested) on Goanet or the Goa Book Club do
something to help with this institution that has had a vibrant and
chequered six year history? My kids too still enjoy reading books from
there. You should visit please while in Goa.

Security at Old Goa A Worrying Sign.

Kudos and hats off to Herald Editorial, this is exactly what the Goans
all over the world are expecting from “The Voice of Goans, HERALD ”.
Such write-ups had really brought changes in Govt. policies or local
authorities like Panchayats or Municipalities etc.

The treatment meted out to Church authorities at Old Goa cannot be
digested. We the Goans are pained and shocked to hear such treatments
from Goa Govt. or other agencies. It seems that this Cong. Govt. is
seriously hand in gloves with RSS or Sangh Parrivar. Somehow or the
other they want the most loved place of Goa “Amcho Goycho Saib” area to
be spoiled or vanish. The local Panchayat had allowed a temple to be
constructed behind the Basilica so that there may be some disputes in
near future amongst the Hindus and Catholics. It is a well organised
plan to reduce the importance of the sacred place like OLD GOA.

The Kamat govt. should be held responsible for any eventuality and Goan
public should start complaining at the Congress High Command at Delhi
that this Goa govt. is supporting RSS ideology in Goa and for not acting
as a secular govt. They are listening more to the Sangh Parivaar then to
the people electing them to power.

During 2007 the Devotees and pilgrims had even charged money by the
local authorities for the parking of vehicles in the Bhakia property.
They require developing and beautifying this area for parking and other
utility services. A TOTAL BAN IN AND AROUND 500 MTS OF RADIUS HAS TO BE
IMPLEMENTEDD AT THE EARLIEST. No construction whatsoever is to be
allowed within this area. Can Herald take this lead and help lakhs of
devotees who comes there to give homage and respect for “”AMCHO GOYCHO
SAIB””.

Breaking conventions
Author: Editorial
Publication: The Hindu
Date: October 10, 2011
URL: http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/article2523647.ece

In his efforts to shield Chief Minister Digambar Kamat from charges of
involvement in illegal mining, Goa Speaker Pratapsinh Rane was not only
being politically partisan - he was also bending rules and breaking
conventions. After declining to table the report on illegal mining prepared
by the Public Accounts Committee, which was headed by the Leader of the
Opposition Manohar Parrikar, the Speaker reconstituted the PAC. True, the
term of the PAC had ended, and the new chairman, Vijay Pai-Khot, is also
from the main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party.
But in blatant disregard of established legislative procedure, Mr. Rane
chose not to consult the BJP leadership on the change. Mr. Parrikar appears
to have been kept out solely because of his role in drafting the report,
which was a damning indictment of the government. In any case, Mr. Rane
ought to have tabled Mr. Parrikar's report in the Assembly, instead of
looking for excuses for not doing so - that a majority of the members of the
PAC, four of seven, had not signed it, and the report was, therefore, no
more than a draft. The PAC, as was to be expected, was divided on party
lines, with three members of the ruling Congress and one from the
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party disagreeing with the findings. The proper
course for the Speaker would have been to table the report in the House, and
allow an honest debate on illegal mining in the State. That this was not
done gives rise to suspicion that senior leaders in the Congress and in the
government have a lot to hide. It lends credence to the allegations of
irregularities in renewing mining leases, of non-payment of mining
royalties, and of damage to the environment.

The PAC report followed up the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor
General on revenue loss to the government in iron ore export. The increased
demand for iron ore in China made mining extremely lucrative, and illegal
mining worth the risk. Indiscriminate mining over the last few years has
contributed to the depletion of forest cover. Instead of facing up to these
hard facts, the Kamat government launched into a cover-up operation. By all
accounts, Chief Minister Kamat, who holds the mining portfolio, does not
want an impartial probe into the issue. Under these circumstances, the only
option is to have the Central Bureau of Investigation inquire into what the
PAC report refers to as a "clear nexus of politicians, bureaucrats in the
Mines Department, local police officers and officers from the Forest
Department" in illegal mining. The choice before Mr. Kamat is stark: make
way for such investigation, or quit.

[Goanet] The Goan Media

2011-10-10 Thread Freddy Fernandes
The Goan Media

There is absolutely no doubt that, today media sells on tragedies and scams, be
it the idiot box or be it the print media, the escalation of prime time
coverage on TV is always directly proportional to the intensity and the
enormity of the tragedy or scam and the same applies to the explosive headlines
on the front pages of print media, so while the media thrives and resonates on
scams and tragedies and we are fed with an overdose of overt action and
synthetic empathy, the media houses laugh their way to the banks. Scams and
tragedies do indeed provide a revenue torrent to media biz.

We witnessed the 26/11 tragedy as it unfolded, live and on print, which went on
well beyond and after the embers had died down in the chill of the Indian
winter. Of late media biz has been overwhelmed and overworked, feasting over
scams that have been erupting like poppers at a parties and the Congress has
been the most generous contributor to the overdose and to the coffers of the
media houses. The BJP too has not lagged behind in their generosity, with the
carnival in the Karnataka legislative assembly and the crowning "gory" of the
Reddy brothers in acquiring their colossal wealth and ofcourse how can we
forget the Ramlila and Anna's fasting jaunts along with the ostensible change
in "Moditva" ideologies.

On one side the media houses are happy with the overstretched limits of
coverage and on the other side, the people who are just waiting to read about
and watch, the next disaster or scam unfold and explode, get their daily dose
of fix. Except, who is complaining, even as the next scam erupts or the next
tragedy occurs on the tail of the previous, both, the people and the media tend
to forget the harsh realities of the past incidents and begin feasting on the
new. We all do tend to have very short memories, even though we ominously
display even short fuses at anything and everything. This embedded culture
compels deep introspection about the activities, responsibilities and the
responses of both the media as well as the people.

Media can be informative as well as educative, media can change situations,
emotions and opinions in a its wake, media can make or break movements and
persons, media can also expose treachery and hypocrisy and so basically media
is an essential tool of our daily lives and it certainly has greater
responsibilities towards the masses on what and how, they present the issues
and facts with malice or bias towards none and should not resort to
irresponsible and morbid presentations. Our media should be worthy of the
principles of democracy that we all seek.

In Goa's post liberation history, media has always been a major player, be it
the Opinion poll, Konkanni movement or the epileptic RP's and SEZ issues, which
it helped to gain momentum and turn them into human tsunamis, bringing our
politicians to their knees. Peoples power to the fore thanks to the media.

Today as we contemplate on the issues plaguing our once beautiful serene land,
a lot has been said and written about the mining scam in Goa, which has not
just become a national issue but an international one and due credit must be
given to the Goan, as well as the national media in helping to expose the
conspiracy of illegal mining in Goa, hatched by our very own elected members,
the very people who were given a mandate to work for the welfare of our land
and our people but failed miserably in the wake of their own primitive and
skewed agendas.

Even though the media has been overworking in exposing illegal mining in Goa in
the past few weeks, I am still skeptical of the media and the part it has
played so far, as some major media players in Goa are somehow connected to the
mining industry, if not on their payrolls and it is this liaison that could be
detrimental to our Goan psyche and our holistic efforts to curb, if not stop
illegal mining and that makes me weary of the Goan media.

It is said that the elephant has two sets of teeth, one set is for display,
while the other is for crunching, I wonder which are the teeth that our Goan
media is now showing ?

[Goanet] Invincible Modi now on the defensive?

2011-10-10 Thread soter
Just a few days back Modi seemed the invincible hero. All was well in Gujarat.
Even Anna Hazare had issued a certificate of good governance to Modi. The
corporates were celebrating Modi until Sanjeev Bhat seems to have spoiled the
party. Now that several IPS officer's have come to his support, the truth on
the Gujarat riots will probably also spill out in the open. Sanjiv Bhat has
blown off the lid. It requires an ant to kill an elephant. So, is this the
beginning of the problems for Modi?

This new book consists of 'Activities' that students can do on various
environmental topics.
**
Dear Reader,**
**
Environment ceased to be a sideshow recently, after the country’s
apex
curriculum setter and the two dominant education boards decided to
allocate
scores to the subject in the crucial school-leaving examinations. As
per
the current guidelines, the assessment will not be based on the
conventional
‘study-text-books-write-examination’ mode. Grades will depend on
how active
the examinee has been ‘on the ground’.**
**
CSE's Environment Education Unit has always been working towards
providing
easy-to-understand reading material. Our new publication on this
subject
is an attempt to lend teachers a helping hand. It unfolds in two
sections: Climate Change: how to make sense of it all, & Natural
Resources: how to share and care. Here, the key issues selected adhere
strictly to curriculum guidelines. However, they are introduced to
students
not as a paragraph to memorise, but as an activity to do.**
**
Each activity sheet begins with a Curriculum Connect, a brief note to
teachers that matches suggested assignments to the curriculum stream
(sciences, social sciences etc.) and to the class level (primary, mid
or
senior). Likewise, Gobar Gyan, a succinct backgrounder, that precedes
each
activity set, explains to students why they are being asked to do the
task.
We have made a determined effort to make each of these four-page
activity
sheets self contained. Each activity sheet includes references to
external
information materials, online linkages and relevant data.**
**
Introductory price of the book is Rs 290/- (USD39)**
**
Order multiple copies of this activity book as you will need to make
copies
of the various activities to be given out to students as
assignments.**
**
For Indian Buyers:**
**
Send your payment by DD/Cheque payable AT PAR for the required amount,
drawn
in favour of Centre for Science and Environment, payable in New Delhi.

[Goanet] Anna Hazare and team backing BJP supported candidates in Hissar bye-polls?

2011-10-10 Thread U. G. Barad

In his response on the subject, Dr Ferdinando wrote: "It does not make a big
difference to the electorate, specially when the majority are poor
illiterates."

My response:

I find the above statement to be somewhat patronizing. Most of the people
who are in jail on account of 'corruption' are rich literates.

Best regards,

[Goanet] Anna welcomes move to make public audios of Lokpal parleys

2011-10-10 Thread D'Souza, Avelino
Anna welcomes move to make public audios of Lokpal parleys

Anna Hazare tonight welcomed as a "good" step Government's move to make public
the audio recordings of proceedings of the Joint Drafting Committee constituted
to draft the Lokpal Bill.
Congress on its part said the government was not under "any pressure" to bring
out the deliberations of the Committee in public domain. Hazare, the
74-year-old anti-corruption crusader, said the Government move will lead to
more transparency and build up the public confidence in the Government. A key
Team Anna member Santosh Hegde however voiced apprehensions whether the CDs
containing the recordings will be edited.

He said the Government decision was "belated." Hazare in his response from his
native Ralegan Siddhi village in Maharashtra said, "It is a good thing.
Transparency should always be there. If more transparency is there, public
confidence will build up. So this Government's decision is good."
The Committee held seven meetings over a period of two-and-a-half months. The
Gandhian recalled that Team Anna had made a request to the Government for video
recording of the proceedings but it was turned down.

Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said, "We should appreciate the decision of the
GovernmentPeople will come to know about our stand and their(Team Anna)
stand," "We did not do it under pressure," he added Hegde appeared to raise
questions at what he called a "sudden belated" decision by the Government. He
said that as per his information the CDs may feature only the edited version of
the proceedings. "Whether the CDs are genuinely edited or deliberately edited,
we can find out," he added. "My only problem is if they edit and do it in a
manner which is not in the larger interest of conversation between the two
groups then that will create some controversy," he said.

Kiran Bedi, another key Team Anna member, wanted the Government to make
available the transcript of the proceedings and actually publish it on its
website. "It will be good to have the script...We will exactly know what was
said and done," she said.
