Global Goemkars !!

It is with pleasure that I announce that the  FESTIVAL OF PLANTS FLOWERS
from 25 to 27 August, 2012,  will be a part of our
WORLD GOA DAY celebrations.
I do hope that many of you in Goa will visit this event in Siolim this year
as I did last year. It was indeed a great pleasure thanks to Alexyz for inviting
us.

Thank you Miguel … thank you for encouraging the organisers - The SFX
festival committee of this   year to participate in our WORLD GOA KONKANI
DAY  celebrations.

Here below is an announcement from Miguel Braganza

WORLD GOA KONKANI DAY 2012
GOANWORLD - EVENTS FOR
http://worldgoadaymessages.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/world-goa-day-2012-festival.html

o

Dears,

The theme for the 21st year celebration of the FESTIVAL OF PLANTS
FLOWERS from 25 to 27 August, 2012, is BIODIVERSITY as seen on a Mattolli at
Ganesh Chaturthi.

The competition will be for projects on Natural Pest Management using plant
materials and other organisms.
The projects are for two categories of students:
1. Up to SSC [High School]
2. Std. XI Std XII [HSS]
The students must have a poster to explain the NPM item and how to use it;
specimen of the plant or organism and two students must be present on Saturday
25 August morning to explain the project to the panel of judges.

Some books on this subject are available at the Other India Bookshop, above
Mapusa Clinic, Mapusa, and at Broadway Book Centre, Panaji. Information is also
available in the book GROWING VEGETABLES ORGANICALLY published by the GREEN
HERITAGE Eco Club of SFX School with the support of Green Essentials, Taleigao.
Besides the above two bookshops, copies are on sale at the school in Siolim,
Varsha Bookstore [near Azad Maidan/Bank of India], Panaji and Vardaan, opp.
Kadamba Bus Stand, Margao.

Information on Fungal Bio-Control Trichoderma viride, Beauvaria bassiana,
Hirsutella thomsonii, etc is available on the internet Extract from flowers of
a Ocimum sp plant closely related to the Tulsi make a good pheromone for the
fruit-fly trap. The common Ruiee plant [Calatropis gigantea] latex is used
against sucking insects and the Marigold [Tagetes sp] has many uses including
nematode control.

The SFX festival has been postponed by one week because Monday, 20 August is Id
holiday and 18 to 20 August becomes a long weekend when people may travel out
for a break.

There will be the competition and display of ornamental and flowering plants
from the students of SFX school and adult hobby gardeners from the village of
Siolim.

We hope to display pot grown cucurbits [pumpkins, cucumber, melons and gourds]
with a bamboo trellis mounted from within the pot as well as pot grown fruit
plants with fruits available this season as an inspiration for those living in
apartments. Those who have attended the Green Essentials-Miguel Braganza
workshop at International Centre-Goa, Dona Paula, are familiar with the set up
and how to do square lashing the way Boy Scouts do. There were two
Earthoholics from Mumbai there, too. You can also learn it [and/or mango
grafting] at Mahamaya Nursery Agri. Farm at Sal-Bicholim on Sunday 22 July,
2012 from 10.00 A.M. to 4.00 P.M. Advance registration is a must. SMS your name
and interest [trellis or grafting or both ] to 9822982676 by 19 July. You will
get two months to grow and display your achievement at Ganesh Chaturthi
and you can have full grown plant with the fruit/vegetable by the time the
Botanical Society of Goa's annual PLANT UTSAV
 comes to town.

[Goanet] GOA SUDHAROP: Director of Global Operations

2012-07-20 Thread George Pinto
Goa Sudharop is pleased to announce a new management position – Director of
Global Operations – and our long-time management member, Mrs. Acaria Almeida,
has kindly volunteered to accept the role. Acaria joined Goa Sudharop right
after her MBA in 2002 and has been serving since, as Treasurer, as President
for three years, and as a Board member, all as a volunteer (unpaid position –
all Goa Sudharop management positions are volunteer-based and unpaid).

In her new role as Director of Global Operations, she will continue to work
with Goans around the world and promote Goa Sudharop’s mission towards the
betterment of Goa and Goans. She is totally committed to get overseas Goans
more involved in the shape and future of Goan development, to save something of
our heritage, environment etc. She also has the appealing personality to work
with various age groups, from the young to the not-so-young.

Acaria has always taken a leadership role as a volunteer. She initiates ideas
and then executes the idea. Her latest efforts are the Goa Sudharop Youth
conventions (in San Francisco last year and in Goa this year). Previously she
has been active in so many Goa Sudharop activities, too numerous to mention.

Acaria is keenly interested in athletics and combined that with her fundraising
efforts. She has taken part in several Half-marathons and has helped raise over
$20,000 over a few years for Goa Sudharop. She is a team player and the
gold-standard of an exemplary volunteer.

Acaria is also a community builder. Besides, being a stalwart in Sudharop,
Acaria is involved in the Goan Community in the San Francisco Bay Area in
different ways. She writes and directs skits in Konkani and encourages other
Goans to take part in cultural programs thus keeping the Goan language and
culture alive in this area. She also worked with the India Community Center
(ICC) and the Partners program so Goa Sudharop and ICC can partner together.

Acaria's work career has mostly been in banking where she has been very
successful. Most importantly she is the proud mom of three children who are
active in the Goa Sudharop community and has a very supportive husband, Joe,
who encourages the family’s community service.

Please join us in welcoming Acaria in her new role and wishing her success.

Re: [Goanet] Konkani's first free audio novelette ... Khand by Willy Goes

2012-07-20 Thread Sebastian Borges

Dear FN,

For any discussion to be
meaningful, it is imperative that the discussants comprehend exactly what the
other participants therein want to say. In this manner, each participant is
able to see the issue in a holistic manner by looking at it from the point of
view of dissenting members. This becomes possible when each one uses words and
expressions which have definite meanings/connotations in common parlance.
Unfortunately, this is not happening here because, in my view, you are turning
the words upside down; perhaps you feel the same regarding my usage. I get the
impression that you do not want a fruitful discussion. When details are
provided, you feel “flooded perhaps because the details deny you the
opportunity to grab straws for keeping afloat. In support of my contention, I
present you
the following evidence:

A language/dialect is written
(not spoken) in a script; but you think a script is written in a language. The
languages/dialects have names and so do the scripts. Thus we have the Roman,
Cyrilic, Perso-Arabic, Devanagari scripts each of which is used to write
several languages. But we do not have a Portuguese script (Portuguese
dictionaries refer to Portuguese Alphabet, not script). Some scripts are used
exclusively to write a single language or were designed for one language; in
such cases the name of the language is itself used as the name of the script;
thus
we have Malayalam, Kannada, Telegu, Gujerati scripts. But there is no Brazilian
scipt; hence a Bardezi script is an impossibility.

You have provided a verse, but
have not specified what exactly your objection to it is. We must keep in mind
the fact that it is in a school text-book. Any curriculum/text-book is designed
keeping certain pedagogic objectives in mind. This is a language text, not one
of music or folklore. Although I could not spell out exactly what the pedagogic
objectives at Std. III are, I am sure enhancement of the language skills of the
child is one of them. And this particular verse seems to satisfy that objective
to a large extent. It uses a familiar song (or two) with some extraneous
stanzas. This is nothing new; people generally indulge in this at parties and
picnics. In fact, we have some commercially produced audio-cassettes providing
exactly this type of medleys for their entertainment value. The verse has a
cat-and-mouse theme akin to
Mickey Mouse situations. The teacher can use it to encourage the children to
imagine additional situations (as has been done via the extraneous stanzas), or
recall MM cartoon episodes, to compose
additional stanzas for which they will have to search and get additional apt
Konkani
words for the purpose of rhyme and metre; the task is made a little easier by
providing a choice of two metres (from two songs). So, what are you objecting
to, may I know? Whatever “sin” you may have envisaged, could that not have been
committed by using the Roman script in stead of Devanagari?

You claim to be a staunch
protagonist of Konkani written in the Roman script. But I doubt you have read
any Konkani in that script. If you have, please state the name of a single
Konkani book/periodical which uses the orthography that you have employed for
the verse you have quoted. Would any English periodical publish a badly-spelt
piece submitted to it? But Konkani periodicals have to do exactly this, day in
and day out; the articles need corrections for almost every word! Don't you
think that those who claim to support the script should themselves use it
properly, first?

You cannot blame the “Devanagari-protagonists”
alone for pushing out other dialects in preference to Antruzi; the
“Romi-protagonists”
too are equally guilty of pushing out other dialects in preference to Bardezi.
But
you do not protest against this! Why?

Sebastian Borges

On 18 Jul 2012  Frederick FN Noronha wrote:

Dear Prof Borges,

You've drowned us in detail! Without getting caught up in that, let me
say that today's Devanagari is largely (wholly?) written in
Antruzi-influenced Konkani. With Romi, the script (at least for much
of the 20th century) was Bardezi.

The attempt to push one dialect and script in the name of
standardisation is leading to a whole lot of problems, as former
Devanagari-alone supporters (like Dr/Fr Pratap Naik, Tomazinho Cardozo
and others) have been bold enough to concede.

Regardless of the terminology used, you've got the point I earlier
sought to make. Now let me share with all what happens to a famed Goan
verse when it gets Devanagarised and incorporated in the Std. III
Konkani text book for schools in Goa.

I'm transliterating from Devanagari to Romi, so the rendering is approxmiate:

Hundir -- Mama

Hundir mhujya mama
Aani haanv sangtam tuka
Aarey, mazorichyea pila lagin
Khel maandun naaka.

Hundir maama aaylo,
Khaati ponda leeplo
Aani mazorichya peelan taka
Eka ghansan dharloh.

So far not bad, but let's see what happens next:

Hundir mama sutlo
Kotye kudint dhanvlo
Aani mazorichya peelak

[Goanet] Effective and Inexpensive way of controlling diabetes

2012-07-20 Thread Luis Vas
Effective and Inexpensive way of controlling diabetes

In May 1988 I went to St. Isabel Hospital, Madras for a hernia
operation . To my surprise my blood sugar level was 411, very hugh
indeed. All my friends said the doctor would not operate . With
tablets and insulin it was brought to normal and the operation was
performed.

In 1990 I started thinking: if I had some strong emotion, some sad
news, the lachrymal glands would be stimulated and tears would come
abundantly. If I put a sweet in my mouth saliva is produced in plenty
-- then if I could stimulate the insulin gland, insulin would be
produced and it would absorb the sugar in my system!

I asked a nurse friend, where is the insulin gland? In the pancreas,
she said, on the left side, below the lungs. Well, I started to
vigorously shake my left side with the result that my blood sugar was
brought under control without tablets. I took the last glynase tablet
on 20th January, 1990 . My last blood test in November 1992, Fasting
107, Post Prandial 131.

I now eat sugar, cakes and ice cream without any worry thanks to my
therapy. Many of my friends here and abroad have benefited from this
effective and inexpensive method.

I have written this article with the hope that it may have wide
publicity and may be of help and relief to all those suffering from
diabetes.

Fr. G. Narsilio, SDB
Chaplain
Government General Hospital
Madras-600 003

Method:
Put your left hand on the left side below the lung. Shake, massage

The 'Pork geese' structure hung around for nearly 2 decades. We have seem
similar situation in the Far East. In Hong Kong there are manifestations
against the local government on a daily basis with  regards to corruption
etc.(In Goa we manifest it among ourselves or on social forums). Some local
diocese schools do not want to adapt to the new 'Ich liebe dich mein land'. Not
surprising many reminisce the past and some even call for the brit rule. To
counter act the govt. is now thinking of handing out sweetners as they do it in
Macau.

Dear Prof Borges, If you make your point briefly, we could have a better
chance of staying on track.

On 20 July 2012 09:30, Sebastian Borges s_m_bor...@yahoo.com wrote:

You claim to be a staunch
protagonist of Konkani written in the Roman script. But I doubt you have
 read
 any Konkani in that script.

I have made no such claim. All that I'm saying when me and my kids want to
learn Konkani, we find the Roman script far, far easier to do so. I bear no
animus against those who find the Devanagari script more convenient; and I
will not grudge them their right to choose for myself, as they should not
block mine.

 You cannot blame the “Devanagari-protagonists”
alone for pushing out other dialects in preference to Antruzi; the
 “Romi-protagonists”
too are equally guilty of pushing out other dialects in preference to
 Bardezi. But
you do not protest against this! Why?

Of course, Bardezi's dominance is as unfair. Not just Sashtti but so many
other dialects have lost out... the Pednem boli, the Canacona variant.
Probably the Tiswadi dialect is close to Bardezi.

This is an issue too. But just because one wrong was committed in the past,
it cannot be used as an argument to justify the hegemony of Antruzi and its
one-language-one-script-one-people logic.

FN

PS: There is no Bardezi script, agreed. But isn't it a fact that Romi
mostly uses the Bardezi script (and hence is closely connected with it)
while Devanagari is mostly Antruzi-influenced? If we want to go into the
categories of Padribhas and Bamonbhas (as outlined by Dr William R. Da
Silva, himself a priest) then that is another issue too!

As far as the verse goes, my problem is that the hegemonical grip over
language in today's Goa means that the language and usage of large sections
of people is getting delegitimised.

 *GOAN Diet For GOOD HEALTH...*!!!

A little long winded but funnily quite true!
This description of the Goan diet is most interesting and certainly worth
keeping for the light it throws on Goan cultural background.
By and large, I grew up in a home where Mum subscribed to many of the
principles of this Goan diet though her food was not quite as Spartan as
this Goan Diet. Certainly, 3 times a year, at the end of each school
holidays, we were subjected to a *purgative,* Not funny. - Wendell Rodricks

Pre-lunch, whenever I visited my old friend Lucio, he would be sitting like
a Buddha over a bowl of *Goan kanji. *The first time I saw him with his
kanji I asked if this was a daily routine. Every single day he replied -
It's the best diet, our Goan way of eating.

Many years later and after experimenting with many diets (in an attempt to
cleanse the system once a year) I have come to the conclusion that Lucio is
right. Today, our dietary patterns and physical activity have been altered
so drastically that I decided to go on what I now call *The Great Goan Diet.
*

Before anyone goes on the diet, it is necessary to reflect on the lifestyle
of our ancestors. Imagine a Goan village a hundred years ago. Villages had
no electricity, few cars and no telephones for sure. This meant *walking to
the wells, schools and market places*. Messages were also passed on by foot
(unlike the present phone-call-away sloth). Our ancestors walked, climbed
and rode the humble but effective bicycle. Doctors today will affirm that
riding a bicycle into old age is the best way to keep one's balance. Come
rain or shine, all villagers went for *a daily passoi (promenade)* each
evening. Most importantly they ate frugally and at fixed times.

Once this routine is accepted, half your weighty problems are eliminated.
A few rules - all old Goan wisdom. No canned or bottled products. If its
not fresh, forget it. Imagine that your refrigerator is solely for ice.
Better still believe it does not exist and hence does not become the
repository of frozen food, bottled sauces, junk food left overs and ugly
soft drinks. If you want juice do it from fresh fruit.

Back to the Great Goan Diet. Begin the day with a* cup of weak tea with a
spot of milk.* In the old days sugar was scarce and barely used. If you
need sugar a tiny piece of good old Goan molasses (*jaggery)* adds
sweetness and a lot of flavour. Local fruits such as *guavas,
mangoes, pineapples, papayas, bananas *and humbler fruits from the hills
such as *zomnas *found their way to the breakfast table. One of the
principles of yoga is to eat what Mother Earth gives you in season. This
simple principle drastically cuts out all the sugar laden apples and pears
that now arrive from lands as far as China and Israel. Buy and consume
local seasonal fruits. The same applies to vegetables, but more of that
later. Not many families could afford an entire poyee or kankana per
person. But a fresh poyee or chapatti made of whole wheat flour was
consumed. Most often families shared half a *poyee or kankana.
*Consider *Chapattis
made from nachne (red millet).* Consume village eggs from local hens (when
available) once a week. Nothing like bl*gaunthi eggs fried in coconut oil
and drizzled with garden grown black pepper.* English eggs? Never! Just the
thought of those million chickens sitting in always lit cages has put me
off chicken forever.

That takes care of breakfast. And that rules out butter, jams (except home
made with seasonal fruit as a Sunday treat), cheese, cakes, biscuits
croissants and all such luxuries that have invaded our modern lives. At
10.30, *a bowl of Goan rice kanji *water flavoured with a hint of *homemade
pickle or creamy kalchi kodi* on the side. Insist on 'homemade' as too many
chemicals and preservatives go into commercial pickles.

Ask any gym instructor or doctor and they will confirm that six small meals
are best for health. This mid morning kanji wards off voracious hunger
pangs at lunch which make you eat more than necessary.

Lunch comprises *Goan boiled rice, fish curry* made with *small local fish
and a piece of fried fish or local tisreos.* It is amazing today to see
lunch tables groaning with kingfish and one pomfret per person. In my youth
my Mom expertly rationed one rechado pomfret on Sunday between four sons,
my Dad and herself. Insist on local fish:* sardines, velios, tisreos, catfish

India and Portugal. India by not keeping the promises made by Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru to the Parliament, after the invasion, and Portugal by
slyly signing the Co-Operation treaty with India in 1974 without taking
Goans into confidence.

This meeting shed a lot of light on other important matters. For example,
Prof. Prajal Sakardande came heavily down on those Goans who are rooting
for Marathi when they and their children speak Konkani at home. He
questioned as to how Marathi can be the Mother Tongue of the Goan Hindu if
it is used to recite the aarti to Lord Ganesh.

Floriano Lobo countered by saying that Latin was the language used for Mass
and reciting daily prayers and conducting of Ladains by Goa's
Catholic/Christians. But they have not adopted Latin as their mother
Tongue. He said that these people have no love for Goa but only for
neighbouring Maharashtra. Therefore the attempt to merge Goa with
Maharashtra. On the Portuguese betrayat of Goans, Floriano Lobo said that
Goans should stone the Portuguese Consulate in Goa for this betrayal so
that they know that they will never be able to get away with such a blatant
betrayal of Goans and also to stop them from emptying Goa of Goans by
dishing out Portuguese passports.

Miguel Vaz's delivery was very much appreciated. He cautioned Goans about
the conspiracy hatched a long time ago by India to sabotage Goa's Identity
as was exposed in the magazine 'India Today' when it was a fortnightly and
during the time when he was studying in the 12th standard. What is
happening to Goa is the sure and steady scheme of that conspiracy to
destroy Goa's Identity.

Opinion Poll of 1967 was critically analysed by Adv. Antonio Lobo saying
that India had always worked against the interests of Goa when it could
have told the mergerista that even if they passed a resolution for the
merger of Goa in its loaded assembly, it was not done due to the
long-standing promise by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He promised that Goa's
Identity would be protected. Altinho Gomes said that Goans must be happy
that such a thing as Opinion Poll happened and went in favour of Goa and
Goans.

Secondly, I tried it out myself, and ended up laughing. (It's ticklish.
Maybe when diabetes strikes home then it won't be so funny!)

Lastly, I recall an episode while on scholarship in Deutschland, way back

ourselves being blocked by a military tank (don't know which nationality,
but the Occupying Forces were still around then). For some reason the
meant-to-be-blinking warning light atop the tank was not working. To our
surprise, we saw a soldier lean up, stretch out his hand, and hit the pipe
to which the light was fixed.

Panjim Table Tennis Club flays Goa Table Tennis Association (GTTA) for
refusing to furnish information sought by it under the RTI Act 2005.

Though the Government of Goa vide its Gazette Notification (Series III
No. 15) has brought all Sports Associations registered with the Sports
Authority of Goa(SAG) under the purview of the RTI Act, Goa Table
Tennis Association has failed to provide information sought by the
Club under the Act. Even basic information such as list of Life
members and affiliated clubs, names of sundry debtors and creditors,
minutes of its Annual General Meetings and Managing committee
meetings, etc is not being furnished which clearly shows that the
Association wants to continue its operations in a hush- hush manner
and under a shroud of secrecy as it has done in the past, caring very
little for transparency and democracy.

This high handed approach by the office bearers of the Association,
who are performing public functions but yet want to be answerable to
none, is highly regrettable and condemnable. The Goa Table Tennis
Association has been committing several illegalities, irregularities,
financial mismanangement and other unconstitutional acts on a
consistent and persistent basis and refusing to part with its
information is a clear sign that this Association has lots to hide and
does not want the skeletons to come tumbling out of all its closets.

There is no reason why this Association which is substantially
financed by the Government/ SAG and which has received grants in lakhs
of rupees should not come under the RTI. Hence the Government/ SAG
must initiate strict action against the Association for not adhering
to the Government guidelines on the RTI Act. Given these severe
violations and gross abuse of power and responsibilities, we urge the
Government to take quick corrective actions which are necessary to
bring greater transparency and accountability into the functioning of
all our Sports Bodies.

PAWAR FOR POWER ?
NCP is now trying the successful strategy of TMC. for being noticed and not
taken lightly. By nature, Mr Pawar is a heavy weight ,but with one digit
M.P.`s he does not tilt the balance .TMC on the other hand dictates terms
on the size of its members in the parliament and Legislature Assembly. His
seniority in the UPAII is only two general elections apart and he cannot
demand credit for his earlier experience in the politics and Congress. He
had deserted the Congress party not agreeable to the leadership of P.M.
in the person of Ms. Sonia Gandhi with foreign origin. Self preservation
and electoral compulsions, shamelessly made him turn to Congress once
again. NCP. as the National party is having limited, noticeable exposure in
Maharashtra State. It is decimated out of existence in Goa. The home coming
of Thackery kids will further spell doom to the aspirations of NCP as the
dominant coalition partner. His threat of resignations is to be seen,
whether he will carry it out to its logical end or back track with alibi
of mollification by the powers that be.Congress is basking with the new
found ally of S.P. for number game ,but that does not mean that NCP is
sidelined already. It is a mere conjecture on the part of NCP. The NCP is
commanding two very important portfolios in the cabinet and that is to
reckoned with, proportionately with their strength. It is pure assumption,
wishful thinking and absurd that he should be considered as number two in
the coalition partnership, wherein Congress is a dominant partner and
others are equally supporting with larger strength True, that so far NCP
has not been demanding, but has faithfully stood by the UPAII ,but now
cannot register a point of not being consulted or sidelined. The DMK ,
which has lost two portfolios in the cabinet due to corruption issue. are
yet to be reinstated in the cabinet, but they have not put gun to the UPA
II or put up a price for supporting the Govt. , Whatever respect NCP, had,
as the coalition partner, it has frittered away the goodwill, advantage by
their brinkmanship on their unwise step.
The argument that TMC. with its antiques of sulking, threats has been
treated with dignity all the time is not correct The TMC has retracted with
heavy heart its stand on Presidential election is to be taken with a pinch
of salt as an escape route, to salvage its pride Not supporting their own
man from the state and for the first time would have had an adverse effect
and backlash through cross voting, undermining her authority. In the end it
is position and power, all that matters. Principles and righteousness can
take a back seat with unreasonable, unconvincing, childish tantrums at this
level and at this stage with pin pricks The Congress will not deny NCP the
necessary politeness with dignity to assuage their feelings. but will
ot succumb to their threats Mrs Sonoa has displayed her resilience to
withstand her grounds. Out of power will further erode their prominence,
as many seasoned politicians have fallen by the wayside into political
oblivion. NCP should not stretch their relevance beyond the point of

 GBA/2012 /15
 20 July, 2012

 PRESS RELEASE

*No privte forest demarcation 16 years after Supreme Court ruling leads
to irreversible loss of green spaces due to mega projects in villages of
Goa and mining in the hinterlands.*

The GBA in its meeting on 18th July discussed the issue of the delay in
protection and demarcation of private forests while the Regional Plan 2021
is being prepared. Much of this precious land sustaining biodiversity has
been placed under ECO 2 zones, 'Natural Cover' and 'Orchard' for want of
identification by the forest department, allowing for easy conversion to
 settlement.

Despite court rulings and special committees, only 67 Sq km of Goa have
been patchily identified till date, and 16 years on, even this has been
 reduced.

Findings of the last State Level Expert Committee demarcation of private
forests have not yet been reported despite its term being completed on 5
 th February 2012.
The committee was headed by Mr P.V. Sawant for South Goa and K. G
Sharma for North Goa for a period of two years.

The GBA in its representation to the Additional Principal Chief
Conservator of Forest, has urged that the findings of the State Level
Expert Committee as of the 5th of February 2012, be made official so
that it can be incorporated into the Regional Plan 2021.

The GBA demands that the Government reconstitute the Expert Committee for
demarcation of private forests with urgency, and set deadlines to complete
this task by 2013, before there is nothing left to save.

At risk are a number of buffer forests in the rapidly urbanized areas of
Goa that are responsible for sustaining biodiversity and rainfall.

The hapless citizens of Siolim have been fighting to save the remaining
forest areas as builders cut down this unprotected habitat for mega
projects. Such encroachments, many illegal, may be traced in Siolim Marna
on Survey Nos 93/2,3 , 118/26A and 72/45 while two in Siolim- Vaddy –
  S Nos 306/9 and 307/18A.

Other areas in Goa face similar problems, despite representations and
complaints of citizens to both the Forest Department and the Town Country
 Planning Department.

GBA has decided to hold a consultation on the process proposed by the
Government to finalise the Regional plan 2021

Mr. Saldanha was the newly elected Minister for Environment, Tourism

He died due to 'Massive Cardiac Arrest' which is not the same as

 use of certain chemicals.

The Lethal-Injection Mix used in US Jails for execution include
pancuronium bromide, which paralyzes the inmate, and potassium

Orally, potassium chloride is toxic in excess; the LD50 is around 2.5

30 mg/kg, but of more concern are its severe effects on the cardiac

This death also affects the clear majority of the Parrikar govt in
Goa, as it directly benefits the Russian Mafia (Tourism Ministry), The
Mining Mafia (Environment Ministry) and Opposition parties (-1 BJP

Russia) has still not revealed any details of that case.

We must stand united in asking for a CBI probe into the case.”

 Unquote

Now coming to the first part of your answer:

 You say:
“One answer is YES, there is a bigger game behind these events
behind these events. It is sold under two trade names….”
So somewhere in your unconscious mind you do agree that there is a
possibility. You also say the answer ‘YES’ is sold under…. Do you mean
to say that you have sold your answer to these Mafia?

Now coming to the second part:
 (1) (a) “No available evidence (yet) to suggest that Matanhy died
 under suspicious circumstances”
You want evidences now to suggest that someone acting as a minister of
a crucial ministry died under suspicious circumstances? Circumstantial
evidences are enough to suggest that.
Any way what reply can I expect in a country where great leaders like
Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee, Netaji Subhashchandra
Bose died under suspicious circumstances when leading very crucial
positions. (I know you need evidences even for that).
For that matter 99.99 per cent children do not ask their parents to
produce evidences that they are their biological parents. They just go
by the circumstantial evidences. That does not prove that the children
that you rear are your own children, nor does it prove that your
parents were your biological parents. Now please do not start looking
 for evidences there also.

 (1) (b)
“That having been stated, one must ascertain when last he had a
physical, what tests were done at the time and what the results
 revealed.”

Having done some tests or physical does not prove anything. Do you
mean that the labs which produce these test results are incorruptible?
Tests can always be altered very easily. Anyway that is a different
 matter altogether.

Suppose there are two groups, each of ten persons. Suppose all have
done tests and physical together. Suppose all tests are identical for
both the groups. The only difference being that, the first group
consists of ten people with cholesterol levels of about 230 mg/dL. The
second group of ten has healthy levels of cholesterol. If all of them
are given an injection of potassium chloride of about 35 mg/kg of
their weight, the chances of survival of all of these people are very
 very low.

So tests, physicals etc are not relevant when you talk about high tech
 assassinations.
 (2) (a) “Wrt to Parrikar jr's illness - such events are not unknown in
 the young.”

Not unknown? You could have said “Well-known”. That does speak for
itself. It is not very common. Brain haemorrhage too can be induced by
using “certain components that dilute the blood so that the heart
utilizes less energy to pump the blood, and thus be able to deliver
physical force with less effort being exerted.”

 I reiterate:
“Is the mining lobby (or some other lobby) blackmailing/pressurizing
the Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Parrikar. Only recently, the
environment minister and activist Mr. Mathany

[Goanet] K'taka lokayukta police in tatters

2012-07-20 Thread Marshall Mendonza
The anti-corruption ombudsman, lokayukta, remaining headless in the state
has drawn the ire of the Karnataka high court, but what has gone unnoticed
is the quiet and slow death of the agency’s police wing, which is
considered to be the sword and the cutting edge of the quasi-judicial body.
Sample this to understand the gravity of the situation: Lokayukta police
wings in 16 districts are headless and in in Hospet, the hotbed of illegal
mining, the posts of SP, DySP and police inspectors remain vacant.
The lokayukta police wing in Hospet is functioning with just one inspector
and a few constables, while the ground realities in that place mandates
additional personnel to fight corruption.
The situation in Raichur is no different as the top posts of SP, DySP and
police inspectors are vacant. The situation in Yadgir district, too, is
just as bad. As for Bangalore city, two posts in the rank of SP remain
vacant, apart from a few more in the police inspector’s rank.
Speaking to DNA, HN Sathyanarayan Rao, additional director general of
police, lokayukta, admitted that functioning of the lokayukta has been
hampered due to posts of superintendents of police in so many districts
remaining vacant. “These posts are vacant for the past several months and
they have remained vacant even after us writing to the state government to
fill up the posts,” he said.
Rao blamed the police department for delays in posting personnel to these
posts and hoped the posts would be filled during the next transfer season.
“We will have to wait for another two months or so for that,” he said.
According to sources, after the retirement of Justice N Santosh Hegde as
lokayukta, not only the police wing but even the public prosecutors’ wing
of lokayukta has been put on the death bed. “Many corrupt police officers
have been posted for lokayukta duty which is eroding the credibility of the
institution. Justice Hegde used to hand pick police officers after
thoroughly checking their track records. But now, such enthusiasm is
missing in getting good police officers for Lokayukta duty,” a source said.
The documents in possession of DNA present a sorry state of affairs in the
crucial public prosecutors (personnel) wing of lokayukta too. Of the 10
posts in this section, seven are vacant. That’s not all: two posts of
additional registrars in the inquiry (personnel) wing, three posts of
deputy registrars and two posts of assistant registrars are also begging to
be filled.

Why are Anna Hazare and Team Anna so silent and turning a deaf ear and

[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE: GSRP YOUTH WING SPEAKS TO THE PRINT ELECTRONIC MEDIA

2012-07-20 Thread floriano

The YOUTH WING of the Goa Su-Raj Party has an interaction with the print and
electronic media at the Party's Office at Mapusa yesterday evening with the
following press release:

YOUTH WING - GSRP
PRESS RELEASE:

1. On Ram Sena: Intending to set shop in GOA.
2. On Mopa Airport: Goa does not require another airport.
3. On Mining: All said and done, Goa ultimately has, as according to our
IIT'an CM, ' Illegal Legal Mines???

1. Ram Sena :
It cannot set shop in Goa by virtue of it being against Western Culture. Goa
is imbedded in Western Culture for the past 501 years . 451 of those years
with the Portuguese in Goa. Goans do not need moral police such as Pramod
Mutalik to set things right for Goans. The Government of Goa under CM
Manohar Parrikar must see that Mutalik and his communal ilk does not set
foot on Goan Soil. Assurances given by CM Manohar Parrikar have no worth
with reference to (1) Attack by the BJP Goons (including it's catholic Law
Minister) on Hotel Mandarin in Mapusa during the earlier short BJP rule in
Goa. (2) Attack on the convoy of the Governor of Goa outside the Raj
Bhavan.

GSRP Youth requests CM Manohar Parrikar to thread carefully w.r.t. Ram Sena
setting shop in Goa. The Goan youth do not want such a vile - communal
organization in Goa. The Government of Goa under CM Manohar Parrikar shall
be solely responsible for the after effects if Ram Sena is welcomed in Goa.
We, the youth of Goa prevail on CM Manohar Parrikar to heed to the age old
adage : Prevention is better than cure. The Central Government has nothing
to do with what Goans want and do not want. For Goans, it is enough that
there is a GOACENTRIC government ruling in Goa.

W.r.t. Congress Youth wing leader Ms. Pratima Coutinho welcoming Mutalik as
a Goan guest to holiday in Goa, we the GSRP youth do not want to see
Mutalik in Goa even if his life depended upon it. It is plain and simple.
GOA IS OUT OF BOUND FOR MUTALIKS OF THE REST OF INDIA.' We shall take care
of ourselves and do not need no Mutaliks to help us on this account.

2. Mopa Airport:
Goa does not need another airport. Dabolim, which is centrally located, is
just fine. Let the Navy move out from Dabolim. Someone has to tell the Navy
to move out. If Goa's government does not have the courage to do so, then
the Goan youth who are against setting up of MOPA will give a good doze of
courage to the Governemnt of Goa in time to come. We, the Goan youth do not
want GOA to be yet merged with Maharashtra through the back door. We shall
not allow it at all costs.

3. GOA's MINING:
The GSRP Youth is flabbergasted at the way our esteem Goa's CM has
flip-flopped on illegal mines in Goa. It is a fact that he himself has been
hollering that 30 per cent of Goa's mines are illegal, not having the
required 'environment clearances' when he was the leader of the Opposition.
At that time , Mr. Manohar Parrikar was holding the then CM Mr. Digamber
Kamat responsible for the illegal mines blatantly operating in Goa.. Today
we hear from the mouth of the same erstwhile Opposition Leader that there
are no illegal mines in Goa, only illegal ore. This is only possible if Goa
has 'Illegal Legal Mines' HOW COME, MR. CHIEF MINISTER???

Our Party's stand is that Goa's mineral wealth is the gift of Providence
to Goa and Goans. If it's extraction does not benefit Goa and Goans, and if,
on the contrary, Goa's forest cover is decimated, it's wild life displaced,
water resources dried up and polluted, agricultural fields silted with
mineral reject wash, rivers polluted and silted, people suffer from
tuberculosis through inhaling of dust, youth crushed under the wheels of the
mining trucks, people cannot live through noise pollution generated, then
let these mineral resources lie buried and untouched whether the Goa
government or the Central government likes it or not.

The youth of Goa want a total ban on the mining activity till such time as a
comprehensive mining policy is put in place with the interaction of the
people of Goa for a sustained and orderly mining industry which will benefit
Goa and Goans and not a handful few mine owners and the Central government.
Goa is for Goans and we the youth of Goa will see to it that this comes
about.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. WE, THE YOUTH OF GOA ARE NOT READY TO BE FOOLED ALL THE
TIME BY DEVIOUS SELF-AGRANDIZING POLITICAL SCHEMING.

Re: [Goanet] Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit....

2012-07-20 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Awesome.

Often, people do not understand sarcasm (not suggesting you); and
others take what is not intended as such to mean so.
Therein, perhaps exists the notion, along with with who employs it:
that sarcasm, is the lowest form of wit.
The following is an educative piece, on how sarcasm works (how it is
employed).

How Sarcasm Works
by Shanna Freeman http://people.howstuffworks.com/sarcasm1.htm

Understanding and Learning Sarcasm
Most of the time, when you say something sarcastic, the person that
you're speaking to understands your intention. But how? Since they
can't rely on the words for the message, listeners pick up on other
cues. When we say something sarcastic, we often use a very specific
tone of voice. Important elements of spoken sarcasm include
intonation, or how you vary the pitch of your voice, and stress, or
how you emphasize certain words.

When English speakers express sarcasm with the word Thanks!, they
often use a nasal tone. Some researchers say that this nasal tone
shows a connection between sarcasm and extreme disgust, to the point
where the speaker is expelling something nauseating and he or she
wants to remove it not only from the mouth but also from the nose
[source: Haiman].

Sarcasts of all languages use what Haiman calls inverse pitch
obtrusion. This occurs when the speaker pitches a stressed syllable
lower than the other words in the sentence. Take our weather example
from the last section:
Sincere:
Pitch: High
Great weather, huh?

Sarcastic:
Pitch: Low
Great weather, huh?
The pitch of the word great in this sentence changes depending on
whether you're being sincere or sarcastic. A sarcast might also stress
the word great heavily, to show that it's anything but great.

I would like to congratulate Rohan Lobo on the publication of the first edition
of his e-magazine. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am truly impressed.
Keep up the good work. I am sure that in time it will grow and become a premier
source of knowledge and entertainment throughout the Goan community worldwide.
True the first edition comprised of a variety of topics on Calangute. This is
expected as the birth place of this effort is Calangute. May I suggest that
future editions dedicate space to feature a village each so that the whole of
Goa's villages and towns can be featured in time thus giving a showcase of the
villages and their uniqueness. This will also broaden the readership and
stimulate interest from all corners of Goa and the Goan Diaspora scattered

Thank you once again for this marvelous effort.

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Panjim... working towards a likeable capital (Tallulah D'Silva)

2012-07-20 Thread Goanet Reader
Panjim... working towards a likeable capital

Tallulah D'Silva
tallulahdsi...@gmail.com

The third edition on NoMoZo (Non-Motorized-Zone) was a huge
success with young enthusiasts -- school and college students
-- landing up at the venue rather early as the Traffic
Police, Corporation of the City of Panjim and volunteers of
Aamchi Panaji hastened to get the area cordoned off, swept
clean and free of cars and two wheelers.

There were more than 2000 people cycling, walking, playing,
chatting and also jostling for space in the unexpectedly
crowded melee. Little kids on their little cycles, teenagers
in large groups, parents accompanying tiny tots eager to
explore the car free length of road, senior citizens calmly
ambling along, police constables mingling in, the atmosphere
and activities just perfect for a Sunday well spent.

The idea of a car free space is gaining popularity,
isn't it? It simply proves that Panjim and its
residents are ready and support the
pedestrianisation of some of its overcrowded
streets. 18th June Road is an ideal case in point,
as it is a shopping street and like the rest of the
city, relatively deserted on weekends and holidays.

That brings us back to the question of why pedestrianisation
is one of the key solutions to the city's ever mounting
traffic congestion. To understand the city's traffic woes
let us examine threadbare its myriad problems. What are the
traffic and mobility related issues in our city today?
Here's perhaps a comprehensive list:

Current issues: Increased traffic loads, primarily cars- at
peak times

Possible reasons: Everybody owns a car or
motorcycle and prefers to use this to travel to the
nearest point to hop on to a shuttle bus service.
High capita income-everybody owns two cars adding
  to city congestion.

Current issues: Narrow roads in city core and heritage areas
causing congestion, widening roads is not possible in old
areas. Ribandar-Patto junction also gets clogged. Old
Ribandar road is heavily crowded and movement is slow in the
heritage area.

Possible reasons: No scope for widening existing
roads in the city core and outer limits of the city
bound by river, back waters, khazan lands that
  further constrains expansion

Current issues: Inadequate public transportation

Possible reasons: City buses ply at a low
frequency, are often overcrowded and incur long
waits at bus stops. Private run buses only cater
  to the lucrative main routes.

Current issues: KTC junction gets clogged with the
intermingling of through traffic and intra city traffic

Possible reasons: Bridges are small for current
carrying capacities and the KTC junction is common
for intra and inter city traffic

Current issues: Most of the major junctions suffer traffic
jams at peak hours and the intermingling of pedestrians,
buses, cars, two-wheelers, ferry users, cyclists.

Possible reasons: Increase in the number of cars
and users coming to the city

Current issues: Absence of public transportation in the city core

Possible reasons: Small size of city population
does not allow for the introduction of a mass rapid
transit system like in other large metros.

Current issues: City core is chock-a-block with on street
parking reducing the capacity of the carriage way.

Possible reasons: No space with residents, traders,
businesses, taxis, visitors struggling for parking
  space.

Current issues: No pedestrian zones- pavements are
fragmented, road crossings are risky, uniform levels not
maintained- for residents, citizens and pedestrians who walk
across the city core. No textural surfaces for blind and
disabled citizens to enable easy movement along pavements and
building edges

  Possible reasons: New buildings disregard
maintaining level pavements to connect adjacent
edges seamlessly. City not made disabled-friendly.

Current issues: Improper and inadequate signage for
direction, information and warnings

Possible reasons: No comprehensive signage both in
heritage areas as well as business core

Current issues: Lack of proper infrastructure for road
junctions/crossings like zebra crossing, footbridges, traffic
lights, etc

Possible reasons: Traffic calming measures like
raised paved areas in level with adjoining pavement
absent in most parts of the city.

Current issues: Lack of maintenance of stepped streets used
largely by residents and tourists

Possible reasons: No importance given to these
traditional walkways perhaps because these lie in
  less prominent areas.

Current issues: Lack of dedicated parking spaces in the city
to ease the parking loads on the street.
